At Yeshivah of Flatbush, education doesn’t end when the bell rings. Torah, growth, and connection extend far beyond the classroom they live in the daily choices our students make and the community we build together.

This year, that vision came to life in powerful ways. Students chose to learn outside school hours, through after-school programs, earlymorning learning, and weekly mishmar. Over breaks and summer vacation, hundreds continued learning through video shiurim, our “Learn a Lot in a Little” initiative, and optional morning sessions. Even before and after camp, Middle School students partake in Torah learning proving that growth doesn’t take a vacation.

But it’s not just about programming. It’s about connection. From faculty-led holiday celebrations to heartfelt Tehillim gatherings, our students are part of a community where spiritual exploration is encouraged, curiosity is celebrated, and relationships are real.

This is what it means to be a Yeshivah of Flatbush student: to live a life where learning is joyful, personal, and never limited by time or place. Our students don’t wait for learning to come to them, they go out and seek it. That mindset, of choosing growth, embracing responsibility, and leading with intention, defines the Flatbush experience and shapes the kind of young people we are proud to send into the world.

Thank you for partnering with us in this work that shapes our future.

In the Book of Bereshit, Hashem commands Avraham,

(Go forth from your land, your birthplace, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.)

The Midrash teaches that Avraham’s journey was one of constant learning and development. This command is profound not only as a call to a physical journey but as a spiritual mandate to leave behind what is comfortable and known, and to step into growth, challenge, and responsibility. Each step he took required faith and a willingness to face uncertainty in order to grow into the leader he was destined to be. This idea teaches us that true growth requires going out: going beyond the walls of what we know and taking responsibility for our own development.

At Yeshivah of Flatbush, this lesson is alive in the way our students embody the spirit of Lech Lecha. They rise early for morning learning, choose to deepen their Torah study through evening shiurim, and engage in internships that expand their skills and broaden their horizons. Beyond the classroom, they answer the call to serve, turning learning into action and values into real-world impact

We recognize and applaud our students for their leadership, growth and commitment. Each one is a reflection of Avraham’s path: stepping forward with courage, seeking knowledge, and embracing responsibility to make a difference. His journey reminds us that growth is never passive; it is a continual, active process of seeking, learning, and leading.

May we all be inspired by his example. As we watch our students take bold steps forward, shaping their own futures and that of our community, we are reminded that these journeys are made possible through the vision, partnership, and generosity of all those who believe in our mission.

The 24-25 school year has been a year of remarkable achievements. Our students have blossomed into responsible, involved and community-driven young men and women who cherish opportunities for chesed and Torah learning. Whether it be before or after school, on weekends or on vacation, their spiritual connection remains passionate and consistent.

This year’s Annual Report theme of דַמְֵלְוּ אַצְ envelops the Yeshivah’s core goal of inspiring students to go out in the world and elevate it. Our highest value in the Yeshivah lies in our aim to cultivate our students' middot along with their lifelong passion and commitment for learning Torah. As they grapple with text and explore its depth, their immersive experience will ultimately lead them to pursue a future infused with kedusha, morality, integrity and fulfillment.

In the realm of chesed, our students are engaged in a wide variety of opportunities certainly too long to list here. A week does not go by where our students are not helping the less fortunate, visiting the elderly, learning about community-based organizations or supporting their brothers and sisters in Eretz Yisrael.

In the realm of Limmud Torah, you will see how one of our 7th grade students won first place in the Chidon HaTanach, competing with the top 250 Tanach students from across the United States. She will be representing the U.S. in Israel next year at the international competition. However, what is also very telling is that 10 out of the top 28 national finalists were all from Yeshivah of Flatbush an unprecedented feat. This is a true testament and representation of the education and values of the Yeshivah, and it stems from the quality and deep passion of our devoted faculty and the culture that we have fostered here.

Aside from the meaningful learning and chesed we performed in the building, we also pioneered an Achdut-Chesed Mission to Israel for our 8th grade students and their parents. While this had previously only been available to our high school students, we heard our 8th grade students voicing that now, more than ever, they also wanted to be in Eretz Yisrael with Am Yisrael. We listened. The experience was such a success that we are looking to expand it to a larger base of students in the coming school year.

As we approach the new school year, we remain committed to our mission of educating, inspiring, and empowering students to go out to learn, to teach, and to elevate the world. We are proud to see our students ready to carry Torah, kindness, and integrity forward as leaders and role models who are deeply connected to Medinat Israel and the Jewish people. Their journey begins here at Flatbush, but its impact will last for generations

Yeshivah

This past year at the high school was marked by achievement, resilience, and an unmistakable sense of purpose. After several years of construction, we finally “moved in” to our beautifully renovated and fully unified campus. The upgrades to our classrooms, labs, gyms, and gathering spaces have transformed the way we learn, collaborate, and build community. We are deeply grateful to the lay leaders and benefactors who made this dream a reality.

Yet the heart of the Yeshivah remains what it has always been: our sacred mission to Empower, Educate, and Inspire the next generation. The theme of this year’s Annual Report, “Tsei U’Lemad”, captures that mission perfectly. We aim not only to prepare students for the world—but to go out and shape it.

This year, our students lived that value in powerful ways. Many of them participated in our Achdut-Chesed Missions to Israel—our fifth and sixth separate trips since October 7th—to stand with our brothers and sisters during wartime. They volunteered, packed supplies, offered hugs, and brought hope. Others made a difference closer to home, organizing rallies, raising funds, and speaking up for Israel and the Jewish people on social media and beyond.

They also excelled in more “typical” ways—earning admission to top colleges, achieving athletic success, and producing art, journalism, and performances of the highest caliber. But what distinguishes our students most is the sense of responsibility they carry with them. Their accomplishments are never just for personal gain—they are a means to elevate others, to strengthen community, and to sanctify God’s name.

Our teachers, too, have gone above and beyond. Whether in the Bet Midrash, the classroom, or through countless co-curricular initiatives, they have shown our students what it means to be lifelong learners and dedicated builders of the Jewish future.

As we look toward the coming year, our goals remain ambitious: to deepen Torah learning, strengthen Hebrew fluency, sharpen critical thinking, and expand leadership opportunities. We are not just preparing students for tests or college admissions—we are preparing them to leave this place and go make a difference.

Tsei U’Lemad: Go out and learn. Go out and lead. Go out and shine.

Yeshivah of Flatbush Joel Braverman High School

Philosophy of Tsei U’Lemad -

The phrase “דמלו אצ” or “Go Out and Learn” is inspired by the Haggadah’s opening line, “Tzei Ulemad Mah Bikesh Lavan Ha’arami La’asot.”

“דמלו אצ” is more than just a phrase it’s a call to action. The idea challenges conventional learning, which often takes place within familiar surroundings. Instead, “Tzei” – “go out” – encourages us to venture beyond the comfort zones of our homes and classrooms and immerse ourselves in Torah study. By doing so, we transcend our boundaries, and reaffirm our allegiance to Hashem and our unique identity as a Jewish nation.

Just as a compass needle points true north, the Yeshivah of Flatbush helps students navigate their paths with purpose and clarity academically, personally, and spiritually.

Empower, Educate, and Inspire students to take their learning beyond the classroom and into the world, where they can make a positive impact through Tikkun Olam.

Just as the Pesach Seder teaches us about establishing order and the responsibility of retelling our story after Yitziat Mitzrayim, we continue this tradition in our own time. In the aftermath of October 7th, we strive to establish order and share our story. This Annual Report highlights the initiatives and programs we’ve undertaken over the past year, both in and out of the classroom.

At Yeshivah of Flatbush, we embody this philosophy through our “Tsei U’Lemad” initiative. We hold strong to our mission to

We invite you to explore and see how we incorporate our “GOAL” to Go Out And Learn.

To begin, here are just some of our students who have challenged themselves to go out and learn, inspired by their Yeshivah of Flatbush educators.

Emily Tarrab,

11th Grade, Bronfman Fellowship Winner

Over the course of a year, Bronfman Fellows explore both traditional and contemporary Jewish texts and engage with rabbis, educators, and artists to deepen their understanding of themselves and one another. During the summer, they participate in an intensive month-long seminar that takes them to Israel and Maryland. In Israel, they meet with Amitei Bronfman, a parallel group of Israeli fellows.

“It’s been deeply enriching to learn from and bond with such a diverse group of Jewish students and educators from across the U.S. Our conversations have been thoughtful, nuanced, and often challenging—each one giving new value to the questions I ask and the perspectives I hold.”

Learning from Chesed

Achdut-Chesed Missions

YOFHS has been embarking on chesed missions to Israel for decades on an annual basis and in times of desperate need. This year, 8th graders had their own opportunity to be messengers of hope and support as the William S. Levine Family Shoah Institute offered an additional trip geared towards Middle School students and their parents. These trips have become the fiber of our being, and are purposefully interwoven into every school year.

WILLIAM S. LEVINE FAMILY SHOAH INSTITUTE

William S. Levine Family Shoah Institute programming prepares students for the moral responsibility to bear witness to the tragedies of the Holocaust and cements students’ current ties with Israel and its people through student participation in classes, missions, trips, theater, self-made movie productions and art exhibits. Students are given the opportunity to participate in multiple interdisciplinary programs to strengthen their understanding of the Holocaust in the greater context of world history and as young Jewish citizens who are committed to advancing the welfare of all humanity.

Every year, the Witness Theater program matches YOFHS 12th graders with Holocaust survivors to create a moving theatrical production that weaves together personal stories of horror and hope, and teaches powerful lessons of emunah, resilience, and redemption. The symbiotic relationships between students and survivors outlast the duration of the program, as they forge meaningful connections with each other during the eight months they spend getting to know one another.

Names, Not Numbers® (NNN) is an interactive multimedia Holocaust project that pairs Middle School students with Holocaust survivors in order to preserve their stories. After numerous history sessions, the students researched the biographies of their assigned survivors, attended an interviewing workshop with a media professional, and learned hands-on camera techniques. The project culminates in a documentary that will be archived for future generations at Yad Vashem, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and Yeshiva University’s Gottesman Library.

The Poland Heritage Trip offers a memorable experience for seniors to better connect with the lives of European Jews in the pre-Holocaust era and to understand the devastation of the Shoah. Students visit death camps, synagogues and yeshivot, as well as multiple historical sites in Warsaw, Krakow, Lancut, Lizhensk, Lublin and Tarnow.

Going The Distance

Teachers Go Out And Learn

Dedicated YOF faculty members continually build on their education and often find deep inspiration in the process of learning and growing alongside their students. When students have positive role models, they tend to emulate these qualities and are encouraged to challenge themselves in all different directions.

SICHA

SICHA (Safe, Inspiration, Connection, Health and Advisory) provides students with a safe space to connect, converse and contemplate life under the guidance of trained rabbis and teachers. These classes are separated by gender and cover a variety of topics such as mental health, stress, values, relationships, coping skills and addictions. Weekly social emotional classes teach students life skills and inspire healthy decision making. All classes are taught through a Torah lens, incorporating Jewish traditions and values.

TRiP

TRiP is the Yeshivah of Flatbush Teacher Residency and In-service Program. This program offers a cohort of novice teachers support, mentoring, graduatelevel courses and professional development. Teachers receive a fully sponsored double master’s degree in Education and Special Education from Touro College while they serve as associate teachers alongside veteran teachers in elementary school classes. This allows them to gain hands-on classroom experience while receiving personalized mentorship in class preparation, lesson design, and lesson reflection.

Extracurricular Exploration

THATLEARNINGGOES THEMILEEXTRA

At Flatbush, prayer and Torah learning never take a break. We believe that spiritual growth never gets put on pause. Our mission is to instill a deep sense of consistency and inspiration in our students—so that each morning, they wake up knowing that prayer and learning are constants in their lives. To support this, YOF offers a wide range of learning opportunities throughout the year, including daytime, evening, holiday, and summer programs. No matter the season, we ensure that your child remains connected, inspired, and growing.

During Winter Break, high school students and parents were sent daily “Torah Takeaways” featuring videos of faculty members offering Divrei Torah. Elementary school students and parents were sent the daily “Learn a lot in a Little” that included videos, summaries and challenging questions. Even our Early Childhood families received daily mitzvot and parasha videos, proving that it is never too young to start building good Torah habits.

Before and after school, elementary school students flock to early morning learning and to Mishmar. More than 30 students joined YOFHS Mashgiach Ruchani Rabbi Avi Churba for Torah learning after school.

Learning from Good Sportsmanship

Being part of a team encourages athletes to emulate the Flatbush Five character traits that we first start promoting when our students are in elementary school: Respect, Honesty, Kindness, Responsibility and Humility. The Athletics department focuses on building its sports program from the ground up by adding experienced Middle School coaches who also work with the high school teams. This continuity creates a more seamless transition as students advance in their athletic careers. We even offer basketball clinics over the summer in both Deal and in Brooklyn. Our students are not only taught how to win– they are also taught how to hold themselves with dignity from a young age when they don’t score the winning goal.

Sometimes when the score says you lose, you actually win.

“True success lies in the growth, learning and resilience individuals and teams gain through the journey - not in the outcome of winning or losing. It’s the development of character, effort and perseverance that our coaches emphasize most,”

"Student athletes learn that being on a team means being part of a group, and they need to make choices that reflect the whole team. These character traits will remain with the students throughout their lives and will help shape their future selves," shared Robyn Chattah, Assistant Director of Athletics.

students joined three new Middle School teams

YOFHS recently added a new team room where coaches can connect more deeply with their athletes in a dedicated space to review game video, discuss scouting, pre-game prep and strategize best approaches to play. Aside from being a place to celebrate a win, it's also a safe spot to cope with disappointment.

“Being in the team room and preparing for play sets the tone for who we are as a team–which is really a family.” Class of 2025 Teddy Beyda

Embarking on a New Adventure

Students from over 25 elementary schools attended our 2024 YOFHS Open House, where families participated in informative sessions and enjoyed guided tours led by our student ambassadors. Throughout the fall and spring semesters, prospective families also had the opportunity to hear directly from students, meet one-on-one with administrators, and gain a firsthand look at campus life during school

Early Childhood continues to grow overall. In order for new families to get a more private feel for the school and be comfortable asking questions, we transitioned away from a larger Open House setting to small, intimate tours. The New Family Dinner invited prospective parents to engage with current parents and faculty members to feel what it is like to be part of the Flatbush Family. The Flatbush Friends event invited all new Early Childhood students to engage in art and reading activities as well as an exciting reptile show.

This gave me the opportunity to connect with them and create lasting relationships, such as IDF soldiers who I met two years ago and visited on a recent trip to Israel. Through the difficult times post October 7th, we can give comfort to our brothers across the world and feel the strength that they send us back.”

Samuel Shamoelian

EXTRACURRICULARS: Mishmar, Chidon HaTanach

“This year, I was part of Mishmar, which I really enjoyed because it gave me a chance to learn more Torah in a relaxed and fun way after school. I also participated in Chidon HaTanach, which helped me learn a lot about the stories and people in the Tanach. What I like most about Flatbush is that the school has a good balance between Judaic and General Studies, and the teachers really care about helping you succeed. It’s a place where you can learn, grow, and have fun all at the same time.”

Michelle Saadia

SCHOOL: Midreshet Torat Chessed then Columbia University

INTENDED MAJOR: Biology on a pre-med track

FUTURE PLANS: Doctor or surgeon

CLUBS AT YOFHS: Leaders in Business, Toastmasters (public speaking), Witness Theater, Tennis

“YOF gave me many outlets and opportunities to discover what I love. Through clubs, Pathfinders, and electives, I got to explore new interests across different fields and take classes that actually focused on what I’m passionate about. I also had incredibly supportive teachers and counselors who guided me every step of the way to grow both academically and spiritually.”

Eli Gindi

SCHOOL: Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi then Baruch College

INTENDED MAJOR: Real Estate

FUTURE PLANS: Realtor

CLUBS AT YOFHS: Architecture Independent Course, the Architecture, Construction, Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program, Students Supporting Israel, Mock Trial, Model Congress, Real Estate Club, Leaders in Business, JV and Varsity Hockey and Varsity Volleyball.

“My favorite thing that Flatbush gave me is the ability to grow and discover myself in a safe environment surrounded by supportive teachers and friends.”

LEARNINGALUMNI:HERE, LEADING EVERYWHERE

Few schools can boast Nobel Prize laureates (we have two!), influential politicians (we have dozens), renowned historians, celebrated educators, and community members who make a real difference around the world. Here, we illuminate just a handful of our remarkable alumni–but truly, they are the ones lighting up the world, carrying the inspiration they found at Flatbush wherever they go.

500 years ago was the last time Cambridge University had a Jew leading their Semitic/Hebrew Studies department. Welcome Aaron Koller (ES’91, HS ‘95), who has taken on the role this year.

1978

YOFHS graduate Dr. Benjamin Korn launched the Institute for the Study of Hope, Dignity & Wellbeing, operating under the auspices of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the non-profit Life’s Door. Studies will focus on the biology, psychology and sociology of hope across the medical field.

Since 1977 , Rabbi Abraham Cooper (ES ‘64, HS ‘68) has been trying to build relationships with some of the world’s religious leaders to spread peace. He was a founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) in Los Angeles, which includes the Museum of Tolerance that defends the safety of Jews and Israel and discusses ways to combat antisemitism. Rabbi Cooper is the Associate Dean and Director of Global Social Action at the SWC.

3

students from the Students Supporting Israel club lobbied with AIPAC. Alumnus Marty Geller (HS ‘70), sponsored the trip and arranged for the students to get professional lobbying training, meet with AIPAC CEO Eliot Brandt, and tour the Capitol.

102 year-old Dr. Deborah Eiferman (ES ‘35) made sure that her uncle who had fought in WW1 was no longer mistakenly buried under a cross at Arlington National Cemetery, as he had been for the past century. This past April, Dr. Eiferman and Operation Benjamin corrected the symbol on his grave to be the Star of David.

Sustaining the Yeshivah of Flatbush Legacy

Creating a secure financial foundation for the Yeshivah of Flatbush is our top priority. The Flatbush Forever Fund is a cornerstone of this effort, providing a reliable source of income through prudent investments and generous legacy gifts. Your contribution will have a lasting impact, as the annual interest distribution will support our school's mission and programs. We see the Flatbush Forever Fund as a compelling opportunity for donors to make a meaningful difference and leave a lasting legacy. We encourage broad participation in this vital initiative, which will help shape the Yeshivah's future.

The primary goal of this fund is to support our ongoing efforts to maintain affordability, financial security, and educational excellence. As we look beyond this year's budget, we understand that investing in our school's future is essential to ensuring a thriving and engaged Jewish community for generations to come.

Building the Flatbush Forever Fund is a crucial component of our long-term strategy to ensure the financial stability of the Yeshivah of Flatbush. This fund serves as a dependable source of income for our school, thanks to your generous legacy gift, which will provide YOF with an annual interest distribution from our investments. We believe that the Flatbush Forever Fund offers an excellent opportunity for donors to enhance the impact of their contributions to the Yeshivah, and we encourage many to participate in this vital initiative.

The Flatbush Forever Fund is a vital investment in our school's future, enabling us to prioritize three key areas: affordability, financial security, and educational excellence. As we look to the years ahead, we know that securing our school's future is essential to building a strong, engaged, and resilient Jewish community that will thrive for generations.

TO MAKE A LEGACY GIFT

DONATE TODAY

A donation made today will have a large impact on every facet of our school, as it will add to our annual income.

INCLUDE A BEQUEST IN YOUR WILL

Bequests to YOF are deductible for estate tax purposes. They may be structured in many ways and directed to a purpose of your choice. Contact us for bequest language samples.

$398,659 annual income from endowment

ADDING YOF AS A RETIREMENT ACCOUNT

BENEFICIARY

YOF is exempt from income taxes, unlike individual heirs, so your philanthropic impact will go further when you leave an account to the Yeshivah.

CONSIDER AN IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER

For those 70-and-a-half years or older, directing gifts to YOF from your IRA is an easy, convenient way to make a gift from one of your major assets. The gift will be excluded from your gross income: a tax-free rollover will count towards your required minimum distribution (RMD).

The best way to ensure our Yeshivah's future is to take care of our future generations. We would like to thank our legacy gift donors for partnering with us.
