Note from the Editor

Hello everyone, and welcome to the summer issue of the newsletter. Finally we seem to be moving away from the terrible “spring” weather, with enough rain and hailstones to last a lifetime! At the time of writing we have been having a fantastic hot spell, so do please remember take special note of conditions for your dogs. They may love to spread out and bake in full sun, but dogs can easily suffer from heat stroke and sunburn - especially on the nose, ears and tummy.

A good test before taking your dog out for a walk is to use the 7 second method - hold your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds - if you can’t hold it there for the full 7 seconds, then it’s too hot for a dog. Apparently a dogs’ main sweat glands are located on their paw pads, which is one of the reasons why walking on hot pavement is unpleasant for dogs. Their paws can also be badly burned as the pavement will be much, much hotter than the air temperature.

Why not take on the challenge set by Nev Draper and Bonnie, to see which dog can demolish an ice cream the quickest? Bonnie’s photo is in the summer montage inside. Please do ensure you use dog friendly ice cream if they aren’t great with dairy. I reckon Bella whippet might be good at this, one of her many nicknames is “landshark” as she’s like a great white when grabbing treats!

Molly has asked me to mention that rehoming is still available at the moment, but by appointment only, so please call ahead to book a time. Also, please do phone the kennels before bringing any donations, to check what is needed at the moment. For now they have enough bedding and food, and no more room to store more.

All this talk of hot weather is bound to mean that as soon as you receive the newsletter it will start raining again! Let’s hope not.

Keep sending me your updates and photos, they really help to put the newsletter together. Email me: michele_storer@hotmail.com
