We continuously monitor the wildlife of Iguaçu National Park using camera traps. From December 2023 to June 2024, we monitored 42 fixed points, totaling approximately 7,900 camera days, distributed across public areas, dirt roads, and trails where signs of animal presence are found, as well as in strategic locations for future jaguar capture efforts! During this monitoring, we recorded felines and their prey species as well.
Hawk-Eagle
In January, we recorded the female India with a cub approximately 10-11 months old, a female. This is India’s third litter monitored by the project. In the first litter, she had the male Mitacoré, and in the second, the females Mani and Maná. A vote was held to choose the name, and the selected name was Aysú, which means 'love' in Tupi. In February, we recorded a new pair, Kaluanã and Gufã. Gufã is a female first recorded in the 2018 Census, and in 2022, she was recorded again with abdominal distension indicating a puerperal period; however, we did not obtain records of any possible cubs. In 2023, we started recording her more frequently at monitoring points near the Iguaçu River, and in 2024, she was recorded with the male Kaluanã. Are cubs on the way?
There are six species of felines in Iguaçu National Park: jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay, and small-spotted cat. Five of them have been recorded in the last three months!
In June, we began installing camera traps for the 2024 Jaguar Census. This census is conducted every two years to monitor the population size of our jaguars and is coordinated by Proyecto Yaguareté (Argentina) and the Project Jaguars of Iguaçu. Several partner institutions collaborate in carrying out this census In Brazil, there will be 84 monitoring points, which is 10% more than in 2022
Our sincere thanks to the IICMBio team for clearing the trails and assisting us in installing several points. We also appreciate the logistical support from Helisul and Macuco Safari.
Three capture efforts were carried out in 2023, two in BrazilandoneinArgentina, assistingProyectoYaguareté.

The Engagement Program of the Jaguars of Iguaçu Project targets residents of the municipalities surrounding Iguaçu National Park. And what’s the purpose of this, you ask?
There are many benefits: increasing knowledge about jaguars, reducing the perception of their impact and the risk to human safety and domestic animals, and improving people's attitudes towards jaguars.
We aim to connect people with jaguars, clarify information and misconceptions about them, and also create and strengthen bonds between the project team and the community.
JAGUARATSCHOOLconsistsof activitiesdevelopedinschoolsof themunicipalitiessurroundingINP, whichmayincludetheater, lectures, andexhibitions, combining informationandcreative expression.
One of the actions of the Project Jaguars of Iguaçu is to respond to cases of jaguar sightings and potential predation of domestic or livestock animals. In our response, we provide guidance on proper management of livestock, appropriate disposal of carcasses, safety measures for people, and, when necessary, we supply firecrackers, rockets, and air horns for protection. We also distribute informational materials.
Through prompt assistance and our constant presence, we aim to strengthen ties, increase trust in our work, and replace fear with information, thereby preventing jaguars from being killed in retaliation.
Properties visited between December/23 and June/24
Routine visits to properties allow us to build and strengthen bonds with the community, which is beneficial for both the jaguars and the people!
In cases of reports of predation, we have an immediate response strategy! This way, we can assess the situation, identify the predator, and help protect properties to reduce the risk of further predation. Between December and June, we responded to 29 predation incidents, including 25 by jaguars, 1 by a puma, 2 by dogs, and 1 by an unidentified predator. The responses took place on 15 properties across 6 municipalities in the surrounding area: Capitão Leônidas Marques, Céu Azul, Foz do Iguaçu, Matelândia, Santa Tereza do Oeste, and Santa Terezinha de Itaipu.
At each property where predation occurs, the project tries to identify the predator, advises the owner on management changes to make the property less vulnerable, installs anti-predation devices, and monitors the property for at least one year to prevent further predation incidents
The project aims to reduce the financial risks associated with the predation of domestic animals, potentially increasing producers' tolerance towards big cats.
In properties with a history of predation or those that are vulnerable, several preventive measures are installed.
Between December 2023 and June 2024, we installed 7 Foxlights, distributed 15 boxes of firecrackers and 2 air horns.
Butanti-predationdevicesaren'tamiraclesolution!Proper managementpractices arealsoessential!
It is a device with a computerized LED flash of various colors. According to the manufacturer, it prevents habituation of wild animals as it flashes intermittently and randomly, visible up to 1.5 km away. It has 9 LED lights 2 red and 2 blue with a 360-degree radius. It turns on automatically and can be powered by solar energy or a 6-volt battery. These were purchased with funds from the Nat Geo Society and WWF Brazil.

Valuing the partnerships
In 2021, we implemented a simplified certification for properties, recognizing those that contribute to the Project Jaguars of Iguaçu and the conservation of big catsandIguaçuNationalPark.
The identification of Jaguar-Friendly Properties is carried out by the project or through spontaneous requests, assessing property owner applications. We discuss with the owners, presenting the criteria, and together we determine how their property meets those criteria Certified properties receive a plaque The plaquesweremadewithresourcesfromWWFBraziland theRonMagilConservationEndowment.
In 2023, the project recognized 4 new Jaguar-Friendly Properties in 3 municipalities: São Miguel do Iguaçu, Matelândia, andCapanema.
