PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project consist of an artist residence of 20 single person apartment, a urban food market, a corresponding parking lot , an urban farm supplying the market and a plaza for public. The project locate on a former steel factory site, directly adjacent to a rail yard.
The goal of the design is to activated the industrial site through encouraging public activity on the site. By extending the side walk and transforming it into a public park, not only would the urban food market benifit from increased publicty, demonstrating the potiential of a previously abandoned site would hopfully inspire further development of the city of Roanoke. The cut towards city landmarks alone with the cheese-like facede becomes a great site viewing device that aids both the residence and the public.

CONCEPTUAL STUDIES
The project begin with 2 primary ideas- 3 slices of Important directionsand two level of moment seperating the public life and the private. The mass itself is simply the extrudsion of the existing concrete foundation. A linear mass is introduced next to the main body to fullfil the requaired space for the urban food market. Because the sidewalk is above the level of ground, I propose to take the oppotunity to connect the sidewalk and the site on a elavated path to direct padastrian in. On the right is the first iteration of the project.

SITE/CONTEXT ANALYSIS
The industrial Roanoke possesses a unique material pallet. Charactered by gravel, concrete and steel, people developed a special sense of aesthetic that is reflected through the graffiti art and store sign. Ironically in many cases these character are seen conflicting with the development of the city. As a city progress, many of these would disappear. Although as architect we should account for what the site may be like in 10, 20 years, which, a more urban, modern Roanoke, I would like to keep the vibe of an industrial town. And it is achieved through a “display wall” located in the Food Court.

PRECEDENT RESEARCH
The new Glenstone Museum is so great in it’s clearity and confidence of the architectural idea. Exhibit space and circulation spaces are in clear contrast. Smaller boxes are placed toward inside and can hardly be seem from outside is a wonderful play of perception. Vistor can hardly notice as they walk but the larger masses forms a harmony with the large landsape while the smaller boxes inside brings the scale down into the micro cosmos created by Thomas Phifer.
This inviting atmophere is what I try to achieve in my project.

PRECEDENT RESEARCH
Thomas Phifer construct the experience like a play where the audience experiences a journel from beginning, rise, climax, fall to end. This way a vistor is drawn to move naturally in the desinated route, see what the architect sees. A poetic composition. The opening becomes the way of him telling the architectual story, where, different program strictly follows the same system of opening. The circulation has only one way of opening while the exhibition has another. At the entrance, the exhibition opening is used even when it is considered a circulatory space to exhibit the center courtyard as its own piece of art.
This seemless yet poetic way of telling the archtectual story is another aspect I wanted to learn for my project.

SITE PLAN
According to the program, a large proportion of the land is taken by the urban farm. Taken it as a scenary, I layed a park connecting the sidewalk and the rail yard adjacent to the farm and thus the park becomes the front of the building. The cut towards Downtown extends out through the whole site abstractively connect the building and the farm into one. On top of that I lay down the tensegrity model to engage the tactile sense of vistor. The corner between 8th street and Norfolk is reconized with a sunken place and a secondary entrance to the food market and food court. A big portion is given to the plaze is because the site was lacking activity. As an artist residency and the first of the city’s new development, I want the site to become a beacon to ignite passions, stimulating development around.
Skylights are opened alone the cut on the roof garden and a light shaft is added in the middle of the building to the left.

MATERIAL DETAIL & SPECS
Aluminum panel forms the exterior skin under the perforated panel acting as the rain screen. Orange color provides a good base for the cheese-like aesthetic, so that the building can be read as a fresh large piece of cheese from a far. When approach closer, there is a layer of slight contrast with cheese skin. Both panel are picked for easier maintenance and manipulation. Light weight is also one of the benifit of aluminum.
The perforated aluminum panel will be hang outside of the residential stories with ocacation cuts, mimicing the form of sliced cheese. With the panel perforated, where the building skin is not cut open, resident can still get view and daylight coming through the window.
The glass element is used primarily on the first floor on the front of the building to present as a glass plate holding the cheese on top. They are also used around the residental lounge and the Hub in order to created better view and light condition for artists discussion.
The primary structure of the building is mass timber, in which the vertical members are GLT and the floor plates are CLT. In some cases where a load bearing wall is needed CLT panels are also used to transfer the vertial load.

This level is under the level of Norfolk ave. sidewalk. it’s compose of 4 partsFood Market, Food Court, Service area and Parking lot. The main entrance is on the east side where vistor can enter the corridor from the park. Secondary entrance is at the west under the sunken plaze. Service area is put towards the north next to the Loading dock and hopfully can reduce the train noise. On this level, the wall is recessed back from the retaining wall on the Norfolk ave. side to allow for the display wall.

SECOND FLOOR PLAN
There are three level of residential. Because of the gemotry, each unit takes on different shapes and faces different direction. For each building, there is a lounge space that both accomade for circulation and communication area. the 3 residential building are connect to the residential hub that act as a exhibit space for the artists to share their work. The top right volumn, because of the smaller size, has only one unit and has to share egrass with the other volumn.

EGRESS
Egress on first floor is simple. Cafe and Food court can either take the exit on the park side or the sunken plaza side. Residents on top can take the two stair . Food market has 3 ways out. Customer can evac to the sunken plaza or going through the stair tower, or taking the route through the service area.
The two stair tower on the east and west side are the primary means of evac for resident above.
ARCHITECTURE IV – INTEGRATIVE DESIGN LAB • FALL 2022 YANGYANG AI
Becase of the space required on the ground floor, one stair doesn’t lead to the first floor, residents on top would need to find a way to the stair tower to evac. But because the two volumn is connected, the two tower can serve as the two means of egress for the code. The opened stair can serve as addtionnal option for residence to transport vertically within the resident floors.

LIGHTING + HVAC SYSTEM
The general goal for lighting is too properly luminate the goods, on the food court side is to create warm feeling. At the opening to the display wall, recessed spot light are used to highlight the artifact.
The Urbanmarket uses a different set of system than the other part of the building where the AHU are located in a room adjacent to the parking lot. The residential system use a roof top unit where duct can run down the reserved system shaft to provide for residential units

DISPLAY WALL DETAIL
This display wall is the original retaining wall against the Norfolk ave. The idea is to repurpose industrial artifacts composed as a collage art for display. In addition, the left over steel reinforce member on the retaining wall act as a natural frame for the artifacts. As we move into the digital age the city would be driven further away from the industrial town status. Under this trend, I see artifacts like manufactring machine and fatory sign become more valueable in the history they carry. Reserving this wall for display is my way of honoring the industrial history of Roanoke.
