To keep your customers coming back, your dealership depends on exceptional outboard service professionals. Finding qualified service technicians is the number one business challenge our dealers face. Through Yamaha Marine University™ (YMU™), we’ve designed several programs, Instructor-Led Training (ILT) courses, and web-based training modules to help grow technicians using our 3R approach— Recruit, Reinforce, and Retain. In addition, Yamaha Marine remains committed to equipping marine professionals like you with relevant technical information right when you need it, such as On Board magazine, technical bulletins, and product guides. Together, we can develop the superior service workforce you need to boost customer satisfaction and business potential at your dealership.
Technical Training helps your dealership create a culture that puts your customers first, leading to loyalty and long-term business potential. Through a combination of technical training materials and handson labs at Yamaha’s two training locations, service technicians are empowered to tackle the challenges that come with having more customers on the water.
Career Development Training focuses on helping students enter the marine industry and build a career in marine service. This pillar is vital when it comes to growing the number of skilled technicians to improve customer satisfaction. Through training available at Yamaha, technical schools, and the dealer workplace, career development content champions marine personnel as they learn and grow in their careers.
Service Management Training is comprised of Service Advisor and Service Management online training courses. These courses help dealerships increase efficiency and business potential, while maximizing the service provided to customers. After completing the online training, Yamaha’s District Service Managers (DSMs) can provide additional support through in-dealership consulting.
Sales Training equips dealers with the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of consumers from all walks of life. Whether a die-hard angler is searching for the ultimate tournament boat, or a couple is searching for a new family bonding experience, sales training prepares dealers with the product and sales knowledge needed to sell successfully.

Yamaha created this pathway to help technicians see the full track to become a certified Master Technician. Technicians will either begin at the Student or Maintenance level, depending on their base competency.
The courses between the yellow brackets are based on technician competency and skill level.
Technicians progress to the next technician level after completing all courses in each phase.
After completing the online test for Introduction to Outboard Systems (ITOS), a graduating Technical School Partnership (TSP) student joins a sponsoring dealership. All entry-level technicians with less than two years of experience should take Service Skills Training (SST). After completing SST, the technician is called a Maintenance Technician
The Maintenance Technician must take Inline Engine Systems, V-Engine Systems, and Drive Train Systems to advance to the next training phase.
After completing these three courses, the technician is called a Practiced Technician
The Practiced Technician must take Electrical Systems, Yamaha Diagnostic Systems 2.0 (YDIS), and Advanced Troubleshooting
After successfully completing these three courses, plus the three courses in the previous phase, the technician is called an Advanced Technician and is eligible to take the Yamaha Marine Master Technician Test.
The Advanced Technician must successfully pass the Yamaha Marine Master Technician Test to become a certified Master Technician.

This carefully crafted program is designed to allow you to take advantage of your team’s experience to produce new, qualified marine technicians.
As a complete mentoring program, YMAP gives dealers a clear road map to develop competent, profitable technicians. Your seasoned technician follows an organized on-the-job curriculum to help train a new apprentice. The new apprentice goes through the first three levels of the Yamaha Marine Master Technician Career Path to become a Practiced Technician.
The goal of YMU is to help marine dealers achieve success by increasing customer satisfaction and dealership business potential. One of the best ways to create repeat customers is to deliver top-quality service from knowledgeable, efficient technicians.
Yamaha Marine dealers who participate in YMAP have access to exclusive program benefits including:
• Accelerated career development using a systematic approach to training
• Potentially reduced turnover, increased productivity, and higher business potential
• Improved customer satisfaction
• Additional incentives by some states to participate in this registered program with the Department of Labor
Other features of the program include:
• Mobile compatibility to log daily activities and milestone achievements
• Easy-to-follow, structured education path
• Flexibility to add milestones to fit your dealership’s needs
• Dealer tracking and analytic reporting to monitor progress
• On-demand curriculum, accessible any time and anywhere
Registered with the U.S. Department of Labor YMAP is registered with the U.S. Department of Labor (U.S. DOL). How does that benefit dealers? Apprentice programs have a proven success rate. Programs registered by the U.S. DOL are eligible for incentives, and most states offer funds to subsidize these initiatives. In this case, funding supports the growth of new marine technician careers. Your state may compensate your dealership for joining the program.
Dealer participants will be billed through their parts account $125 per user, per quarter. Participation in the apprentice program can be cancelled at any time with a 30-day written notice. To implement the Yamaha Marine Apprentice Program in your dealership, contact your District Service Manager (DSM) at (770) 420-5873, or email dealertraining@ yamaha-motor.com.
At Yamaha Marine University (YMU), we strive to develop an array of easily accessible, relevant technical information resources for marine dealers and technicians. Whether in a publication format like On Board magazine, a service video, or a business system, we want technicians to have easy access to the latest product and technical information directly from Yamaha.
Arguably, one of the most important and powerful business systems we created specifically for technicians is Tech Hub (ymutechs.com). This website, accessible on mobile devices anywhere and anytime, is a direct portal to reach marine technicians and Yamaha’s Technical School Partnership (TSP) students. Whether you’re an aspiring technician new to the marine industry or an established marine service professional, using Tech Hub will prove to be a valuable asset for your career.
The Education section allows technicians to access training material and enroll in Yamaha’s ILT and WBT courses.
The Knowledge Center section provides Yamaha technicians and students with access to product information and technical resources, including Service Manuals, technical bulletins, service publications, service videos, and more.
The Career section is available to all users. This is a place for Yamaha Dealer Principals to post jobs and connect with technical school students beginning their careers as marine technicians.
Tech Hub features three sections for dealers and technicians—Education, Knowledge Center, and Career.
To begin your path to success, create a Tech Hub account by going to ymutechs.com. Then, follow the instructions to sign up for an account. When you return to Tech Hub after signing up, select “login.” You will be prompted to select one of four user types:
1. Yamaha Dealer Principal (users will have a Yamaha dealer number)
NOTE: There can only be one dealership principal account per dealer number.
2. Yamaha Dealer Technician or Apprentice (users will have a Yamaha dealer number)
3. Independent Technician (active technicians who are not affiliated with Yamaha and do not have a Yamaha dealer number)
4. Tech School Instructor or Student (students or instructors who are affiliated with Yamaha’s Technical School Partners and have a dealer number)
After selecting your account type, click “Next” and log in with your account credentials. Accounts that are created with a Yamaha dealer number will have access to all three information sections, while accounts created without a dealer number will have access to the Career section and its features.
