Welcome to Yalla

WOW! We cannot believe that we are in 2019. Time does fly when you’re having fun (or when you have kids). We’d feel much more pensive about the passing of another year if we weren’t beginning such a very exciting new one! So, let’s take a look at what’s in this issue. This is going to be a big year for the Abu Dhabi as 2019 has been declared the Year of Tolerance to reflect the late Sheikh Zayed’s vision. The naming of this year led us to reflect upon the meaning of tolerance. Not only will we host the Special Olympic Games in March and the World Ocean Summit in April, but also it’s just been announced that Pope Francis will visit Abu Dhabi on 5 February—a clear sign that the UAE is welcoming and tolerant of all religions. Dr. Jane Goodall was kind enough to offer young readers tips on how to save the planet, and we can’t think of another human better suited to weigh in on the topic; can you? This issue is dedicated to determination, sustainability, tolerance, and the very small steps that we can all take to be a better parent, child, teen, and global citizen. In this packed issue, we talk about sustainability and recognise some local heroes in the field: young and old. We also give a nod to our great city’s initiatives to help conserve local species and be more sustainable and, because even environmental superheroes must eat, we will take you on a culinary tour of Al Seef Village Walk. We also are offering a chance to mingle with actual superheroes for the day at Warner Bros World™ Abu Dhabi in the Yalla Kids section. You might also notice that we migrated the majority of our listings online to free up space for interesting editorial on the local stories that we know you care most about. We hope you like this new Yalla Know It All guide. But first, let’s dive right into the topic of sustainability, because everyone all around the world is talking about it, then it’s all the usuals: YallaKids, YallaTeen, Education, Sport, Parties, YallaEats, Healthcare, and much more. Happy reading and hunting for your next great Abu Dhabi adventure. Until next term…

TROUBLED WATERS Dive into how Abu Dhabi’s 2019 World Ocean Summit plans to advance discussions on climate change, oceans, and clean energy.

F

rom 5-7 March, Abu Dhabi will host the sixth annual World Ocean Summit. Sadly, the forecast calls for rough seas ahead for the future of the world’s oceans, but this summit’s theme is “building bridges,” and its goals are to find safe havens for our troubled seas and to help an international "blue economy" thrive. The location of the summit is significant as Abu Dhabi would like to position itself as a leader in sustainability. "On behalf of Abu Dhabi Government, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) is very proud to be bringing the prestigious World Ocean Summit to Abu Dhabi - and the Middle East - for the very first time this year,” says Dr. Mohamed Abdel Hamyd Dawoud, Advisor - Water Resources, Environment

yallaabudhabi.ae

Quality, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. “Together with the Department of Economic Development (DED), EAD is underscoring its collective commitment towards the protection and preservation of local marine biodiversity, governance of coastal activities, and sustainable management of its marine resources through effective policy and regulation. We are looking forward to hosting a diverse discussion with leading experts from all over the globe to promote the healthy development and maintenance of our world’s waters." Global leaders in government, industry, multilateral organisations, and the scientific community will gather to discuss solutions to the challenges facing the oceans. Summit sessions will include a review of initiatives aimed at achieving a sustainable economy

that protects the rights of future generations to benefit from natural resources. Key topics of the 2019 summit are expected to be economic opportunities in the new blue economy, improving investment structures for ocean finance, the role that cities, ports, and the shipping industry can play in innovation, sustainable coastal tourism, blue carbon systems, preventing illegal activity and piracy and ending the depletion of fish. An example of projects to boost marine life in the UAE is the recent coral gardens project on the coastline of Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Ajman. SUSTAINABILITY

100 POINTS OF LIGHT

A Zayed Solar Light Show lit up the Antarctic night and shined a light on climate change and single use plastic. Team Zayed wants everyone to know that they can make a difference to help save our planet.

When Cowie mentions Team Zayed, he refers to an Antarctica expedition addressing climate change that he, Rashed Al Zaabi, scientist terrestrial biodiversity, and Mariam Al Qassimi, communications specialist for the Environmental Agency - Abu Dhabi [EAD] were selected to participate in 2018. Every year, environmental leaders from all over the world are selected to be part

of Climate Force 2041, the International Antarctic Expedition, led by legendary polar explorer Sir Robert Swan that each years trains environmental leaders on climate change, the protection of Antarctica, and what they can do to be better leaders in their community. The expedition culminated in the Zayed Solar Lights Show, which lit up the Antarctic night using one hundred solar lights that sent a message of unity, hope and action on climate change. The innovative message in solar lights was the brainchild of Winston, Rashed and Mariam and was attended by

Hot & Cold Deserts: Lifelessness a Myth

Immediately, the team drew analogies between the cold desert that they were exploring and the warm desert ecosystem in which they lived, worked, and studied in the UAE. “People think that Antarctica is just a cold sheet of ice bereft of life, when in fact the place is teeming with animals,” Cowie says. “What I was most struck by in Antarctica is the diversity of life,” offers Cowie. “There’s so much marine diversity thanks in part to the aforementioned convention’s commitment to conservation. I left filled with hope that if we do what they did there, we can save the

all 100 ambassadors from 20 countries on the expedition. “Antarctica is a great example of how you can make a difference in the world,” Cowie explains. “In the 1970s, Antarctica’s marine wildlife was exploited. They nearly decimated the seals and whales by overfishing. The Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources in 1980 determined the rules for fishing in the Southern Ocean, and the commission has revived the continent’s marine life and has been a real success; it’s a true model for nations everywhere.”

world. Our problems are a bit different with plastic pollution and climate change being at the top, but if the global community works together, we can come up with a solution for the seemingly insurmountable problems we face.” “Much like in Antarctica, by putting together our resources and sharing information and forging relationships with neighbouring countries, we’ve had great success reviving certain species here, such as the revival of the Arabian Oryx and the reintroduction of the Scimitar-Horned Oryx,” says Al Zaabi. Beaming with pride he says, “But the oryxes are just one, there’s also been a recent Indian-crested porcupine sighting, and our agency [EAD] is constantly discovering new species. I am thrilled to be part of some climate change and terrestrial species revival successes in our region.”

“When your name is Team Zayed, that comes with a lot of responsibility,” explains Winston Cowie, marine policy manager for the Environmental Agency - Abu Dhabi.

SUSTAINABILITY

One if by Land, Two if by Sea

Cowie is just as quick to share some marine species revivals of which he’s proud to have been part. “Two major turtle species who call Abu Dhabi home: the critically endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtle and Green Turtle. The former nest on offshore islands, which are all protected, and we’ve had a program running for the last 15 years to protect and monitor their nesting locations. Then, there’s an interesting story with the green turtle. The Green Turtles were known to forage on our sea grass, but there’s no record of them ever nesting here. So, in partnership with Emirates Nature, we’ve been tagging them on remote islands in the Al Dhafra region, and we’ve discovered that these turtles make journeys of over one thousand miles to the Omani shores.” “We can’t forget the shy dugong.” Cowie adds, “Next to Australia, the UAE has the second largest population in the world—around 2,500-3,000, We are making sure that dugongs have a safe haven here. If you’re lucky you can sometimes see them foraging in seagrass beds off Saadiyat Island, but if you see one, please keep your distance.”

What Can You Do to Be A Part of Team Zayed?

“One of the key things that people can do to protect our marine biodiversity is to change our behaviour in respect of single use plastic,” says Cowie. “No matter how old or young you are, you too can share Sheikh Zayed's great vision for conservation by taking simple steps.” The documentary, Zayed's Antarctic Lights will be shown on the Middle East's regional discovery channel, Quest Arabiya, in the first week of March to coincide with Abu Dhabi hosting the World Ocean Summit. It will also go live on Etihad flights during this time. Learn about all the great work that the Environmental Agency - Abu Dhabi does by visiting ead.ae and following them on social media at @environmentabudhabi. If so, please share them with Yalla, and we will do our best to share their stories with the community! yalla@yallauae.ae

CONSERVATION NATION: 10 UA

You need only look at the UAE’s animal population to understand its commitment to conservation and preserving Sheikh Zayed's vision. Here are 10 conservation successes in the UAE. Second only to Australia, the UAE has the next largest dugong population in the world thanks in part to carefully monitoring of the population and bilateral agreements with neighbouring nations for their continued conservation.

Dhabi has identified the area as a key habitat for Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins in the Indian Ocean. The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) began studying the dolphins in 2014 and has estimated the local population to be the largest in the world.

Hawksbill Sea Turtles have nested on the shores of Saadiyat Island, Green Turtles return annually to our seagrass beds, and flamingoes descend annually on Al Wathba reserve to breed safely, away from predators.

The Arabian Oryx, hunted to near extinction some 50 years ago and classified as “endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List since 1989, has now been upgraded to “vulnerable” thanks to a captive breeding programme started by Sheikh Zayed and continued by

A survey of dolphins off the coast of Abu

the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). In 1982, the first houbara bustard chick was hatched in captivity as part of a breeding and release programme that saw 26,433 of the previously endangered birds freed in 2017 on behalf of the International Houbara Conservation Fund. The well-being of the sand cat, falcon, Arabian Tahr, and countless other species have also been safeguarded in this-at times-inhospitable climate.

BE AN ENVIRONMENTAL SUPERHERO

World-renowned conservationist, Dr. Jane Goodall, shares her environmental concerns with Yalla—and the little steps that even small children can take to counteract them.

B

etween air pollution and the depletion of natural resources, humans are negatively impacting the environment more and more each day. Anthropologist and environment activist Dr. Jane Goodall—best known for her work with wild chimpanzees in Africa— wants us all to sit up and do something about it, and she sat down with Yalla to discuss how even a small child can help to save the world.

What small concrete steps can kids take in their community to help the animals?

First and most important thing is to respect all other living beings. As kids are naturally curious, they want to learn more about animals and using this inquisitive nature and knowledge will help them care for them. One of the biggest threats to animals (both marine and terrestrial) nowadays is the plastic pollution. So, the best initiatives can be proper recycling; aim to use less and less plastic (single use ones are the most damaging); beach and neighborhood clean ups and educating others about plastic pollution and how harmful it is.

What is your message to kids who might say “I am too young to make a difference?”

will help save many of the endangered Ocean creatures such as the Dugongs.

In Abu Dhabi’s fragile desert ecosystem, what are the most important steps kids can take here specifically to help their community?

Abu Dhabi has one of the highest rates of water consumption in the world. The current usage of groundwater reservoirs is about 15 times more than the natural recharge rates, so the difference has to be made up using desalination plants which use a lot of energy (hence contributing to climate change) and discharge highly salty water into the sea (bad for marine life). Young people can consider – where water is used and wasted around the home and in the community; can help with reducing this water usage and educate parents, friends and even companies and businesses in the area. Create posters and pledges to spread around the community.

You are never too young to make a difference! Each and every one of us, regardless of age makes a difference every single day with every single thing we do. Every action we take has an impact (whether it is on animals, the environment, the community or all three), so the most important thing is to decide the kind of difference we want to make. Our wonderful Roots & Shoots programme is a great start, so please do not hesitate to visit our website, sign up, and be part of our Global family! Join Roots & Shoots at your school, and if your school doesn’t have a chapter, start one yourself with the help of a teacher. Learn more by visiting Uae.rootsandshoots.

What do you feel is the biggest environmental threat to the world, and how can we stop it?

Currently, the biggest environmental threat is climate change. As nature is so resilient, I do believe if we all care and act, we can help preserve this planet. A few simple actions we can all undertake: use less plastic and recycle better; do not waste water; eat less meat, so we can reduce the green gases which are very harmful; respect and care for animals, as each and every species plays a role in the ecosystem and it is important we know that; try to not over consume and waste. Many more ideas and actions can be found on our UAE website.

Is there an animal in Abu Dhabi that you are worried about, and what can we do to help? The UAE is already addressing some of the key animals such as Camels, Gazelle and the Arabian Oryx, through specialised breeding programmes. And, if there is an attention to eliminating plastic usage, this

TILES FOR SMILES

Looking for unique gifts to take home, art for your walls, or would you like try your hand at an ancient art passed on by a master? Drop by Al Saadah Art Gallery and do all that in one go! “Al Saadah means happiness in Arabic, and happiness is what my tiles have always been about,” Ohan Balian broadly smiles. He truly means that when he says it. A visit to Al Saadah is a colourful window to an eminent artistic past; it is nestled in an arabesque alcove on the second floor of the Souk Qaryat Al Beri. Or, perhaps it is an art history vortex where you can’t help but succumb to listening to owner Ohan Balian’s family history making tiles. You may see visions of these beautiful tiles all around your home and then make plans to design your own. This may sound surreal, but it’s a very normal experience in Al Saadah Art gallery. The economist turned artist’s enthusiasm for his work is literally written all over the walls. Ohan guides visitors to his shop around each and every tile and explains the history and meaning of each design. Most have a personal story attached.

Ohan’s tile studio still abides by the same techniques used by his family for hundreds of years. He adds, “we still use the same organic compounds to achieve these rich colours as well as the same glazes that have been available since the time of the Egyptians—it’s quite amazing how little has changed with the materials.” What has changed, of course, is the firing process. “My family used a wood-fired kiln until the 1950s. Modern diesel and now gas-fueled kilns changed this aspect of tilemaking. We no longer had to tend to the fire to achieve an even temperature, which left us with more time to experiment with our designs and hone our craft.”

An Artful Expansion

What’s next for the Al Saadah Art Gallery? Ohan smiles and says, “my dream is to have a gallery on Happiness Island (aka Saadiyat Island)—the new hub of creativity.” If Ohan is as good at predicting smiles as he is economies, Ohan’s star is sure to rise. Try your hand at this ancient practice. It’s not as easy as it looks, so you’ll be grateful that there is an attendant at hand to guide you through the process. Ohan’s gallery also makes a great venue for birthday parties. Al Saadah Art Gallery, The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri, Happyceramics.ae, 050 411 2030

Ancient Designs Rooted in Ancient Practices

Ohan points to a particularly colourful tile design, “This one, you see its rich cobalt blue colour? It took our family so many attempts to get this to beautiful blue. I had to play with the chemistry to get this colour.”

12

WINTER 2019

© Ohan Balian

“And, this one,” Ohan smiles. “This was my mother’s first design, when she veered away from traditional patterns and began painting animals and flowers—this became our signature designs, though we do still paint the geometric patterns too. In a way, each tile on the walls and shelves tells a story about the Balian family.” And the tiles have a long history to tell.

The new House of Artisans provides another link to the UAE’s past, providing a permanent home to heritage crafts and practices via workshops, demonstrations, and exhibits. The handicrafts reflect the UAE’s topography and are less art and more utilitarian in nature.

The Cultural Foundation will also be host to an extensive programme of artist talks and residencies, as well as an educational programme for children and families. The Cultural Foundation is devoted “to nurturing the development of art and culture in Abu Dhabi,” says Al Shamsi.

“Some of the handicrafts relate to the oasis, some are coastal, and some related to the desert,” said Al Shamsi. “Part of the coastal handicrafts, for example, is fishnet-making, accessories for oysters and pearl-diving, fishing, and boat building. Handicrafts from the oasis are related to the material found in the oasis, which is palm trees. So, we

O

nce a hot bed of creativity, the Cultural Foundation helped to shape the careers and contributed to the success of the UAE’s early artists. When the foundation shuttered in 2008 for renovation, the city’s artists were left with scant studio space and no art central hub. The Cultural Foundation recently reopened with a landmark exhibition that documents the UAE’s art scene and a mission to fuel the grassroots art scene. Artists and the Cultural Foundation: The Early Years showcases more than 100 works by Emirati artists who were active in the late 20th century, and it includes works from that time plus permanent and new commissions. The exhibition is curated by Maya Allison, Chief Curator and Executive Director of NYUAD Art Gallery, and Alia Lootah, Senior Curatorial Assistant at Louvre Abu Dhabi. According to Allison, “the exhibition is a visual and symbolic representation of the artistic diversity of the UAE. This exhibition traces points of connection and divergence among these early cohorts of Cultural Foundation artists, inviting visitors to reflect on the past and present of Abu Dhabi’s

home-grown art community.” Within the exhibition are two chapters which elucidate the early years of UAE artists and their influences. The first chapter A First Generation: to Cairo and Back and The Cultural Foundation: Three Generations examines a loose group of influential UAE artists who attended the College of Fine Arts at Helwan University in Cairo and the themes and aesthetic connections that defined their work. The latter surveys the collective of artists who formed the Emirates Fine Arts Society, and the group’s devotion to mentoring next generations of artists. The exhibition is a veritable who’s who of UAE contemporary art and hosts many UAE artists whose recognition stretches far beyond the UAE and GCC. If you are interested in UAE contemporary art, this exhibition is a crash course on the subject, and, to date, there is no other place to see the artwork of so many seminal UAE artists. Artists and the Cultural Foundation: The Early Years run through 8 June 2019. To learn more about the Cultural Foundation or plan your visit, please visit qasralhosn.ae.

NEW YEAR, NEW EARTH

YALLA KIDS

If you haven’t made or have already broken your New Year’s Resolutions, it’s not too late to make one for the planet. Here are a few suggestions from Yalla.

Y

our kids’ resolutions, of course, might require your help as a parent; whether talking about the health of our planet, or about theirs. But the more they understand, the easier and more rewarding it will be to work towards keeping any of these simple resolutions.

NO MORE STRAWS

Good habits start young. Have an honest talk with your kids about why single-use plastic straws are bad for the environment. Have them think about all of the places they may encounter straws such as restaurants, movie theatres and school. (500 million straws are thrown away in the USA alone EACH day.)

BUY LESS, BUILD MORE Instead of buying another toy, encourage your child’s creativity by supplying recycled materials for crafting. Cardboard makes the best castles! (A great way to

save money and recycle those Souq.com boxes!)

POWER DOWN

Two hours before bedtime, encourage kids to ditch their screens in exchange for books for maximum relaxation. In fact, make the kitchen the family docking station so there are no late-night electronic temptations. (Blue light is a potent suppressor of melatonin, a key hormone in falling asleep.)

VOLUNTEER AS A FAMILY Create a meaningful memory by volunteering together and show kids that they can make a positive difference in the lives of others. An easy start is to take part in a beach clean up on Saadiyat Island. Help hunt for nurdles in the Park Hyatt Hotel and Villas Abu Dhabi’s monthly nurdle-hunts. LITTLE ADO ABOUT NURDLES

They say you can’t unsee a nurdle once you start seeing them. Do you know what a nurdle is? Let Abu Dhabi’s resident Marine Biologist, Arabella Willing, fill you in. “Nurdles,” they may sound cute, but these teeny pellets are the second biggest source of microplastic litter (by weight) found on beaches world over. Often mistaken for food by wildlife, 278 nurdles were found in the stomach of just one bird. Nurdles are preproduction plastic pellets - the raw material that makes almost all plastic products. Around 600-1200 nurdles are melted and squeezed to make a plastic water bottle. In just one year, roughly 2.4 quadrillion nurdles are made in the US alone. The British-based citizen science project “The Great Nurdle Hunt” encourages beach goers around the world to look for nurdles and report their findings. Nurdle-hunting is not only quite fun but also eye-opening. The ease at which you can find them on the beaches is an important reminder that we should all try to find alternatives to plastic whenever possible. My hope is that more and more people will become nurdle hunters, so that together we can help to bring about better practices with the industrial handling of these pesky plastic pellets.

TREASURES OF UAE ART FOUND Like pearls in their shells, museums offer countless opportunities to stumble on treasure. YallaTeen reveals Abu Dhabi’s latest pearl. Within the shell of Manarat al Saadiyat is a small pearl of an exhibition celebrating Abdul Qader Al Rais’ 50 Years of Art. Armed with a Storybook Activity Guide and a pencil, my friend and I set out to learn about his career and complete the guide. Al Rais wasn’t allowed to go outside as a child, and this shaped him as an artist. I can see how one would need an immersive hobby, such as drawing, when confined inside before the Internet was invented. The first room sets the scene. We strolled through a collection of portraits, face studies, and quick sketches of human anatomy. More yet lined the back wall and cluttered the displayed sketchbooks. Quality art supplies were difficult to acquire in those days, still Al Rais persevered. He studied Rembrandt from library books and taught himself through repetition and practice. As a teenager, Abdul Qader Al Rais moved to Kuwait to live with family where he spent three summers at a camp program, painting everything he could. In the UAE again from 1974 to 1982, Abdul Qader al Rais didn’t paint, instead working in an office. We couldn’t imagine how boring that would be, and how he could stop himself from

following his passion. In 1982 after a visit to America, he resumed painting. He must have had easy access to materials there, because his work completely changed. It seems obvious that he valued his freedom to wander and explore outside now. He painted large landscapes, depicting local UAE scenes with care and skill. Two icons were common to many of his works in the 80s: the palm tree and the oil barrel. Al Rais called the oil barrels “treasure.” Yet I saw one painting where the oil barrel was adjacent to a cut off palm tree, cranes in the background, titled A Sad Afternoon. There were also bright watercolour impressions of landscapes that were almost life size. Marveling at the detail, we leaned in closer to see the technique he used and pointed out sections. We envied his skill and patience. At this point he had started to develop techniques, which he would hold onto for the rest of his career. Ambling along, we could see the years pass before our eyes and his style develop into an abstract form of colourful wordless calligraphy, which he calls the Hurufiyyat Series. The pieces are all large watercolours, integrating playful calligraphic elements with striking palettes. We were awestruck at Abdul Qader al Rais’ patience. The final room of the exhibition is an immersive video installation of the artist’s work. After the exhibition, my friend and I reflected on the artist’s skill and mastery, and the many changes he has witnessed during his career, which began even before the union of the Emirates. We both agreed that visiting this exhibition was like stumbling on a pearl in a shell. Reviewed by Saskia Skulmoski, a 14-year-old student in Abu Dhabi. Storybook Activity Guides are complimentary at the exhibition, which runs until 23 March 2019 at Manarat Al Saadiyat.

SAVING THE WORLD, ONE BAG AT A TIME

Abdul Muqeet, affectionately known as “The Paper Bag Boy,” has been an active environmentalist since he was 8 years old and demonstrates that no one is too young to make a difference! Abdul Muqeet, also known as the “Paper Bag Boy,” is a 17-year-old student at Abu Dhabi Indian School. He has been working to save the environment since he was eight. Abdul Muqeet has gained fame in the UAE and beyond making bags out of newspapers and spreading awareness about the harmful effects of use of single use plastics. His classmates call his bags “Mukku Bags.” When Abdul Muqeet is not in school, where he received straight A’s in all his tenth grade board exams, he spends his free time saving the world. He has even received high honours from Crown Prince H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Jane Goodall, and David Cameron. Just your typical teen, right? Yalla thinks not. On 4 February 2010 (UAE Environment Day), Abdul Muqeet learned about the harm that plastics caused the environment. While many others might just throw up their hands and carry on using plastic, Abdul decided to make a change. He began recycling old newspapers and repurposing them into bags which he gave to nearby groceries. He has made thousands of recycled news paper bags as an alternate to plastic bags. He goes to colleges, universities, schools, offices, government departments, public places etc. to spread awareness to protect our earth and the result is that recycling newspaper has become very popular and millions of paper bags created by community to this day. Abdul explains, “It was just after my first initiative giving paper bags to my neighboring local groceries, that the media started calling me The Paper Bag Boy, and it just kind of stuck.”

© Abdul Qader Al Rais, Abdul Muqeet

After the media took note, soon the accolades would pour in for Abdul’s work. In 2011, he was presented with the Abu Dhabi Award by the Crown Prince H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, but the international honours didn’t stop there. In 2013 and 2015, he received the Kids Are Heroes Humanitarian Award from David Cameron and Jane Goodall respectively. He’s been asked to give TEDEX talks around the UAE, and his message is also required reading in Australia,

yallaabudhabi.ae

New Zealand, and Ireland where the Paper Bag Boy is required reading in the curriculum in the book You can make a difference. In response to Abdul’s work, local businesses heard the Paper Bag Boy’s message and promptly made changes to their business practices by eliminating plastic bags and straws—proving one young man with vision can make a great difference.

If you are interested in learning more about Abdul Muqeet or helping his cause, follow the Paper Bag Boy on Facebook.

Think you can’t change the world?

The Paper Bag Boy offers four easy ways to get started: 1) Use recyclable bags 2) Take your own bottles. Do not buy plastic bottles. 3) Save water. Do not waste water, because water is precious. 4) Dispose of unwanted paper in a recycling bin, or try to make my bags yourself!

EDUCATION

THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGAGEMENT

As children return to school after a hectic holiday break some parents will be thinking about how they can continue to engage with their children now the new term has started. Fiona McKenzie from Gabbitas Middle East, explains what a vital role parents can play in supporting their child’s education outside of school. At Gabbitas, we know that parental engagement is a key factor in children making strong educational progress. Research by Professor John Hattie, a leading Educationalist, found that a combination of parental encouragement and high parental expectations could add the equivalent of two to three years of educational attainment to a child over a school career. But what does "parental engagement" mean and how can you help your child?

TALKING TO YOUR CHILD

It is interesting to note that the Pisa 2011 report showed that talking to your children and showing an interest in their learning can have the same impact as hours of private tutoring. Getting your child to tell you about what they have learnt that day helps them to consolidate that knowledge and find ways of communicating this in their own words. With younger children it is important to focus on what they are learning rather than asking about the latest test results.

SHARING ACTIVITIES WITH YOUR CHILD

Research shows that parents who read to their children in the first year of primary school scored on average 25 more PISA points than students whose parents read with them infrequently or not at all. This emphasises just how important it is to make time to share a reading activity with your child; get them to read aloud to you or snuggle up and read one of your favourite stories to them. We know that children who develop a love of reading go on to develop a love for learning. It helps them build a richer vocabulary, improves communication skills and enhances their learning across all subjects.

24

WINTER 2019

DIY activities, playing games, cooking together, family trips to a museum or exhibition or going to the cinema or theatre can all be learning experiences. They are part of helping your child to develop their internal motivation to learn in the classroom, at home or wherever they maybe.

ENCOURAGING YOUR CHILD

A parents’ expectations are key to shaping a child’s self-belief and high parental expectations are consistently seen as the strongest and most influential aspect of parental engagement. But parental aspirations need to be supported by positive reinforcement and by providing the right environment for the child. Monitoring homework, helping them to be more organised and rewarding their efforts are all linked to better performance in the classroom. So the holidays maybe over but continuing to create quality time to talk to your child, read with them and take part in other shared activities at home, will not only be fun but will give them the tools to improve their long-term academic performance in school as well.

Gabbitas Education are experts in finding the right nursery or school for your young child. Get in touch on +971 (0) 445 16933 or admin@gabbitas.ae to see how we can help your family.

EDUCATION

THE BENEFITS OF A GLOBAL EDUCATION Fiona Mckenzie, Director of education experts Gabbitas Middle East, looks at the many positive aspects of an international education and the long-term advantages it can give students in UAE schools.

6

STATE OF THE ART FACILITIES with so many international schools being ‘new builds’, there is the opportunity to have the latest technology, and the most up-to-date art, science and performing art facilities and classrooms that are ‘wired for sound’!

7 8

CREATIVITY AND CONFIDENCE students in an international environment have to learn to be flexible and adaptable. When they start at a new school, they quickly learn to make friends and gain confidence from each new environment. TEACHING STAFF the attraction of teaching abroad is bringing some highly talented and ambitious teachers into international education. They love working with children who want to learn.

9

A COMBINATION OF THE FAMILIAR AND THE UNKNOWN for many families international schools offer a similar learning experience to their home country but in a very different environment, which can be a broadening and enriching experience.

One of the many anxieties for new parents moving to the UAE is how will the education system match up to schools at home. Many parents are understandably concerned that their children maybe disadvantaged by being out of their local system but at Gabbitas we are always quick to reassure them that, not only are there some amazing schools here but there are also huge benefits to be educated in an international environment. Here we share the ten top benefits that we see in action in schools here, which makes international education a great opportunity for children and gives them a genuine advantage in today’s world.

1

10

INDEPENDENT LEARNERS research shows that children who have been educated in an international environment have better soft skills such as time management, critical analysis and are better independent learners. All of which gives international students the edge when it comes to the workplace. (ACS Study 2015)

A GLOBAL OUTLOOK in an increasingly globalised world what better opportunity to understand and work with fellow students from many different countries and cultures?

2 3

OPPORTUNITIES TO CONNECT WORLDWIDE with many international schools having over 100 nationalities in their pupil body, school is a great way of making friends who will be spread across the world in the years to come.

C H O I C E far from being a one size fits all education, in the international environment families have lots of choice between different schools. They can pick their location, select the best curriculum for their child and compare the different facilities.

4

5 28

RANGE OF CURRICULA International schools offer a much broader range of curriculum choices. In the UAE there are over 17 curricula on offer, giving families a chance to make educational choices they may not have access to in their home countries.

GLOBALLY RECOGNISED QUALIFICATIONS IGCSEs, A Levels and the IB Diploma are offered by many International schools and results from all of these externally moderated exams are highly valued by universities and employers across the world.

SCHOLARSHIP REWARDED

There’s no shortage of rising star scholars in the capital, and Yalla’s recent competition partnered with Kip McGrath to find a student deserving of a scholarship.

Lucas Sim was nominated by his mother, and Yalla spoke to her.

Why did you apply for the scholarship?

Last year, we were visiting friends, and Lucas learned that the big brother of a friend received a full university scholarship. Later, he told me that he wanted to get a scholarship too, so I encouraged him to do his best in his in school and pursue his dream of becoming an Etihad pilot. I am not a native English speaker, so Lucas and I converse mostly in our mother tongue, though we read many English-language books together. When we encounter unfamiliar words, we check them online. In addition to the opportunity to learn English at GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi where he is very happy, we hope that he could have more opportunities to raise his literary skills, so that he could independently read more stories for his little sister while I work.

opportunity for Lucas to learn from Kip-McGrath teachers. It's also a tribute to my late father who passed away this summer. He has never had a chance to complete secondary school, yet he had pursued a lifelong learning. I remember clearly how he would flip pages of a dictionary to learn new words from the newspapers after his long hours of work, and we are so fortunate now that we have an instant dictionary thanks to internet. Being inspired by him, I think that it's important that we put our best efforts and enjoy the journey of lifelong learning. Over 40 years ago, Kip McGrath understood that every child learns differently and developed a methodology to help children to catch up and keep up in the core areas of English and Maths. Now, Kip McGrath Education Centres continues to tutor primary and secondary students all over the world to help them reach their full potential. Various locations. uae. kipmcgrath.com

How did you feel when you found out that you won the scholarship for Lucas?

THE SHAPE OF A MODERN BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SIXTH FORM

E

mpowerment, goal oriented self-discovery, and one-to-one guidance are just a few terms used to describe the unique and bespoke approach to learning that is provided at the Cranleigh Abu Dhabi Sixth Form. Incorporating the Cranleigh philosophy that addresses the whole child, Cranleigh Sixth Form provides an innovative approach to teaching that works inside out rather than top down. Classrooms are organised to maintain an engaging atmosphere and to foster a lifelong love of learning by allowing students to take charge of their own learning process. With some classes incorporating the Harkness style learning, Sixth Form students are seated around an oval table to further develop their independent thinking in a dialogue-based method. A Level programs are tailored to each student based on their own aims and aspirations, with a focus on their specific career pathways. With a strong and personalised support system, students are encouraged to make smart subject choices and a sustained commitment to their chosen field of study. As an example, Cranleigh Sixth Form provides certified pre-college courses in innovation and entrepreneurship led by Columbia University Business School. Students are also able to complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and incorporate different national and international leadership platforms through the Scholars Programme.

Cranleigh Sixth Form Open Evening Sunday, 17th February If you want to know what makes the Cranleigh Sixth Form special, come and ask them! On Sunday 17th February we are hosting an event in our new Sixth Form building, which is the latest addition to our lovely campus on Saadiyat Island. Our Sixth Form students will be on hand to talk informally about their A Levels, how they learn, and the wide range of opportunities open to them, such as the Extended Project Qualification, BioMedical Society, Law Society, Model UN, work experience programs and a variety of leadership opportunities. We will run brief introductory talks at 5.30pm, 6pm and 6.30pm, after which you are free to speak to pupils and staff over drinks and canapes about their experiences, visions and perspectives. More information, including registration details, is available on the Cranleigh Abu Dhabi website (www.cranleigh.ae). Please register for the start time that best suits you.

GO GREEK WITH CHEF THEO

YALLA EATS

Greek food is considered to be family food, i.e. served family style and enjoyed in groups. Would you say this is what Eat Greek Kouzina aims for? The signature of the Greek cuisine is based on sharing (“mirazo” in Greek),” and that is Eat Greek Kouzina’s guiding principle. You can see it in practice every Friday and Saturday when the restaurant is filled with children, families, young and old people—just like a big Greek celebration.

Kouzina means kitchen in Greek. What is the significance of the Greek kitchen?

The significance of the Greek kitchen is the simplicity of a perfectly ripe tomato at the right time in the height of summer sprinkled with fresh oregano, olive oil, and feta.

What is your signature dish, and why should everyone try it?

Simplicity!

How do you want diners to feel when they leave your restaurant? Full of memories and happy with the food.

FEAST LIKE A GREEK AT THE CITY’S FINEST FAMILY-STYLE RESTAURANT IN TOWN. Eat Greek Kouzina, Ground Floor, Galleria Mall, 02 309 2323

Surely, you’ve seen a picture of hanging octopus around the Aegean islands (They are hung to dry, so they boil more easily). One of my favourite dishes on our menu is the grilled octopus, which we first cook “sous vide” and then finish it on the grill. It’s traditionally accompanied by a four-bean salad and a purée of fava from Santorini island.

NAHAAM BRUNCH IN FOCUS:

D

ining at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers is a pleasure whenever you go, but Friday brunch at Nahaam is exceptional, and it sets the bar high for nearby hotels hoping to tempt brunching families.

Every Friday, the hotel’s restaurants share their fare with the world, putting their best dishes forward. The set-up spills out onto the pool deck, where the barbis are fired up and a live band sets the tone for an unforgettable afternoon. We suggest you employ a brunch strategy with this one, as it’s virtually impossible to try everything so know before you go, or you’ll wind up eating your salad at 3 pm and experiencing that feared bruncher’s remorse. Trust us! Here are Yalla’s top tips. Start indoors with the cold stuff and work your way to the pool deck for the BBQ! The colourful cold salad station has everything from crisp California Cobb salad to some of the loveliest fish carpaccio we’ve ever had in the capital. Head straight to sushi and seafood for your next plating. Tori No Su’s famed sushi station is a raw refuge for sushi lovers; Its offerings are delicious, fresh, and made to order. Speaking of fish, the seafood section is also a tour de force. A smorgasbord of the freshest catch from lobster to crab awaits your plate. Guests can bring their seafood down to the BBQ stations to be grilled to perfection with all manner of seasonings from BBQ to Asian to curry. Next to the sushi station are warm plates of homemade happiness from the hotel’s Italian restaurant BiCE. The burrata salad is to-die-for so don’t walk past this place, even if you are cutting carbs. Li Beirut’s standards are well suited to lovers of Levant cuisine. The kebabs are tender and go well with the cold mezze you can find on the salad table. But, perhaps the most notable fixture is the enormous imported American smoker that serves the best brisket outside of Texas. Parents, this brunch has plenty for kids despite being so stylish. Kids will find all their favourite fare from chicken nuggets, French fries, and sliders. Beware the sugar rush around the dizzying array of sweets. The mini cupcakes, chocolate peanut butter cups, and the chocolate fountains are so grand, they could have been conceived by Mr. Wonka himself.

Friday Brunch at Nahaam. Fri 12.30pm-4pm. Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, West Corniche (02 811 5666)

CHEFS DUKE IT OUT FOR THE TITLE

Follow Jumeirah at Etihad on social for the announcement of their next Foodie Fight where they pit their chefs against one another and have brunchers select their fave cuisine. This interactive and very fun brunch is great for foodies, and there’s a chance to win big prizes when they announce the winning chef and cuisine. May the best chef win. Every vote counts!

© Jumeirah at Etihad Towers

The best part is that pool access is included, so don’t forget your costumes. The kids can cool off in the pool as you feast. This brunch is one you simply must tick on your Abu Dhabi brunch bucket list, and the best part is that your family will love it so much, they will not want to leave!

HOMEGROWN IN THE UAE:

NOLU’S CAFÉ

A

bu Dhabi is a melting pot of cultures and home to millions of expatriates from all over the world who have a diverse range of cuisines and food cultures to share. If you tire of the franchises and want to explore truly local cuisine, then read on. Yalla explores restaurants and cafés that you will find nowhere else in this world, because they are made in the UAE.

If your New Year resolution is to eat healthier or simply to try new things, meet Nolu’s. This self-described “healthy Californian cuisine with an Afghani twist” should be added to your restaurant bucket list, and Nolu’s three convenient locations in the capital make it even easier to eat a lighter meal when you dine out. Marjon Ajami, Executive chef and founder, opened Nolu’s Cafe in Al Bandar at Raha Beach in 2014. Ten years prior, Marjon moved to Abu Dhabi from her native San Francisco. Her family owned an Afghani restaurant, so you could say she has being a restaurateur in her blood. She was as influenced by the US as she was by her family’s native Afghani cuisine and eventually fused the two cuisines. When Marjon moved to Abu Dhabi in 2004, she says that the UAE was “a food society focused on chain concepts from foreign countries. I didn't find any local home-grown brands, and this was very frustrating. It was such a struggle getting accepted in prime locations for spaces, no one was willing to support something that didn't come from somewhere else.”

I truly believe that my passion in life is bringing people together around a table for food. It’s the most profound inspiration for me, and it’s maybe a little bit of an addiction lately. Walking into each location and seeing how people appreciate what I have created is priceless. CALIFORNIA-STYLE CUISINE WITH AN AFGHAN TWIST Though it wasn’t easy to get started, Marjon says, “when I started to put my ideas to paper, I created a menu that was missing and also what I felt was the food trend at that moment in time. I honestly never thought a marriage of Afghani and American would work, but somehow it did.”

© Nolu's Cafe

In 2011, Marjon realised that “there wasn't a healthy breakfast concept anywhere in the capital, and I felt introducing something unique was badly needed.” Nolu’s cuisine is simple and health-conscious and then quite

YALLA EATS complex. The open kitchen, pop music, generous portions, and family-friendly atmosphere bring soul to Nolu’s; two other outlets have since opened in the city. Much like the capital, Marjon’s popular recipes are at once traditional and contemporary and a wholesome blend of different cultures. There’s something different about Nolu’s—it’s unlike any other café in town. It might be the buzzing yet cosy vibe or perhaps it's the Afghani spice, but Marjon thinks that, what truly sets Nolu's apart is her soul. She explains, ‘I am involved in every single aspect of the business: from the hiring, to the menu, to the strategy. I know about every little crumb that makes Nolu's what it is today. I will work to keep this hand’s on approach as Nolu's expands, as much as I work tirelessly to overcome every challenge in our path.’ Drop by any of the three Nolu’s locations to start your day off right with a tangy smoothie or the flavourful Afghani breakfast. Be sure to try Nolu’s inspired guacamole if you are a fan of avocados—it’s delicious! Nolu’s multiple locations (The Galleria Mall, 02 644 1516), (Al Seef, 02 444 8080) (Al Bandar, 02 557 9500)

Meet one Special Athlete:

MOHAMMED AL TAJER

At just 10 years of age, Mohammed Al Tajer won his first medal for the UAE at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games. It was an impressive entry onto the world stage for the equestrian athlete and one that whetted his appetite to medal. Al Tajer says, “when I was young, about 10 years old, I joined the club but I did not know much about sport and equestrian, when I first saw the horses there I fell in love with them, and asked my mom to train in horse riding and be an athlete, It was the same year when I competed in the Special Olympics in China.” Today, he has won an impressive 36 medals for his country, the most recent three coming at last year’s Special Olympics IX MENA Games Abu Dhabi, where he won one gold and two bronze medals. At only 21 years old, Mohammed now has his eyes set firmly on Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019. Commenting on his support network, Al Tajer explains, “my family fully supports me through training and all the competitions I take part in. It is very exciting to have the audience cheering for me in the games.” He adds, “my challenge is giving the best effort each time I compete so I can make my country, my leaders, and especially my mom proud.” When he’s not riding, Mohammed also enjoys athletics, karate, handball and basketball, although training twice a week with his horse at Al Ain Club is his priority. He also has a keen interest in music.

WHEN DUSTIN COMES TO TOWN

© GETTY IMAGES

Dustin Johnson is currently the world’s best player and is racking up more wins than most of his peers on the PGA Tour.

Dustin Johnson has been a success almost from the moment he showed up on the PGA Tour as one of pro golf's longest drivers. Since then, he amassed more wins that we can shake a stick at, and he plans to bring his golf prowess to the capital this month in the HSBC Championship at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Yalla sat down with Dustin to learn about his game.

As a child, did you ever dream of becoming a professional golfer?

Like many young players, I always dreamed of being a professional golfer. My dad was the head pro at the Mid Carolina Club outside of Columbia and spent a lot of time there working to become a better player.

What is your favourite part of golf, long or short game?

I actually enjoy all phases of the game, but probably enjoy hitting the driver the most. I also enjoy the challenge of putting, as so much goes into being a good putter. It’s always very satisfying to have a good week with the putter and seeing lots of putts find the hole.

What skill in golf comes easiest for you?

I don’t know if you would categorise it as a skill, but I would probably say my resilience and ability to move on after a poor shot. I try not to let too much bother me, which definitely helps on the course.

What part of golf challenges you the most?

I would probably have to say putting, although I consider myself to be a very good putter. More than anything, I am working to be more consistent on the greens.

What is it about golf that fulfills you?

I think it’s the satisfaction that comes with playing well, whether it’s just a really well-executed shot or winning a golf tournament. In golf, you have no teammates and are only dependent on yourself. It’s you vs. the golf course and that’s the aspect of the game that I really enjoy.

Do you feel nervous before a game?

Like anyone else, I get nervous at times, although I try not to show it. People mistakenly associate nervousness with poor performance, but they do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. It’s all about how you manage your nerves and understanding how they affect you. The day I stop feeling some nerves on the first tee is probably about the time I should retire.

What made you persevere through rough times, when you wanted to quit golf?

YOUR ADVANTAGE IN SPORTS & FITNESS

HEALTH

PERSONAL TRAINING & GROUP FITNESS

Golf can certainly be frustrating at times, but I never recall wanting to quit the game. My love of playing has always been steady, even when things weren’t going my way.

What golfer do you admire most?

There were several players I admired growing up, but for whatever reason, I always looked up to Davis Love III. He was from neighbouring North Carolina, which probably had something to do with it, but I just always thought he was cool and liked the way he played.

Participating in dance classes can be beneficial for kids of all ages, and Bodytree Studio is an Abu Dhabi standardbearer, offering a diverse range of classes for kids and teens. The city’s holistic wellness hub, the Bodytree Studio, is a serene space set up in an unassuming villa in Al Karama. THINGS PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SPEECH PATHOLOGY

Parents worry about whether their children are hitting all the right milestones at all the right ages. Speech is usually at the top of their concerns. Here are five tips for parents. THE RIGHT AGE FOR PRODUCING THE SOUND “R” Many children can say a correct “R” sound by the time they are five and a half years old, but some do not produce it until they are seven years old. In general, if your child is not producing the “R” sound by the first grade, you should consult with a SpeechLanguage Pathologist. BABY TALK Never use “baby talk” (ham, miam miam, etc.). Also do not judge or compare your child’s speech or articulation and never make fun of it. Instead, repeat back the words or sentences with the correct pronunciation or word usage stressing the words you feel he or she can’t produce. Appreciate your child for what he is able to say. If you feel that your child’s speech skills are not developing as they should, you may want to reach out to a SpeechLanguage Pathologist to rule out a speech language developmental delay.

C

M

Y

CM SCREEN TIME EXPOSURE If your child watches TV alone, he or she will be 8.47 MY times at risk to have language delay than those who CY interact with their parents, siblings, or caregivers while watching television. According to the American CMY Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), children older than 2 K years should not spend more than an hour in front of

any screen—even if it’s educational or interactive. Toddlers lesser than 2 years of age should not be exposed to touchpads or TV at all. If your child has been exposed excessively to screens and you feel that he or she has less vocabulary than his or her peers, you may need to consult a Speech-Language Pathologist to screen and assess his or her speech and language development. EARLY LANGUAGE MILESTONES Your baby starts to learn what others are saying and doing even before he or she is born. A newborn doesn't know the precise meaning of the words you use, but it picks up on a parent’s emotions, such as happiness, sadness, love, concern, anxiety, and anger. By the time a baby is 7 months old, it will respond to its own name, and by 8 to 12 months, it will understand simple directives such as "No" or "Don't touch." Around 24 months, a toddler will be able to talk to you in two- or three-word phrases. By about the age of 3, he or she should have a vocabulary of a couple of hundred words and a pretty good sense of the rituals and activities of everyday life. If, by the age of 2, your child can't follow simple directions, speak in two-word sentences, doesn't make good eye contact, can't point to body parts, and doesn't know what to do with common objects such as a phone, a brush, or spoon, consult a Speech-Language Pathologist. You might also consult a Speech-Language Pathologist if, by age 3, he or she can't operate simple puzzles, can't be understood by strangers most of the time, walks or runs unsteadily, or loses skills he or she once had. HELPFUL TIPS TO BOOST LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT Talking and reading to your child help learn good communication skills. Start reading to your child when he or she's an infant and you'll give your child a boost in learning speech and other new skills. Although your child won't understand the words or be able to follow a story, he or she will grasp that reading is pleasurable, calming, and a nice way to spend time with you. Playing with your child also helps him or her learn more about the way the world works. Challenge him or her with age-appropriate toys and games to encourage his or her mental and physical development. Be affectionate and show your child how much you love and care. Give your child a safe, loving environment at home—that's the best way to raise a happy, self-confident child. Praise good behaviour more than you point out bad behaviour. Try to encourage behaviours you want to see in your child about four times more often than you redirect bad behaviours. You'll like the results—and your child will, too. Ms. Sara Bachar currently holds the position of Speech and Language Pathologist at HealthPlus Children’s Specialty Center.

Healthcare Desperately Seeking a Doctor?

The Health Authority Abu Dhabi has launched an electronic directory of physicians in a step towards improving public access to healthcare information. It will provide regularly updated information on licensed physicians in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The directory's website allows people to search for physicians by medical topic, health issue, location (Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, or Western Region), and by the doctor's name and surname or the health centre where the physician works. This is an electronic game changer for those desperately seeking doctors. Haad.ae

COMMUNITY

IBWG: IN FOCUS

One way to make sure you’re connected when you land in Abu Dhabi is to join a business group. Whether you are a man or a woman, the International Business Women’s Group is a great place to connect.

F

or 25 years, the International Business Women’s Group has been helping women advance their careers, gain valuable workplace skills, and bond with like-minded women. In 2018, it opened up its membership to men and, ever since, men have been clamouring to gain access to this elite collection of career women and their collective career wisdom. Gulizar Jonian chairs the group and has been passionately promoting it for 15 years. One thing is sure: there’s little stopping Gulizar from achieving the grand plans for the members of the group. “There weren’t many women in the construction trade when I got here in the late 70s, I had to work harder than my male colleagues to assert myself,” explains Gulizar, an architect by profession. “I joined IBWG as I saw it a good networking platform to meet like minded professional women and exchange experiences. I believe in motivating, empowering and energizing women to reach their true potential. It’s good to pay forward and make a difference.”

What is the IBWG?
