Sensory Installation 01

Task 1a: Observing the Space & Sensory

There are recessed, and shallow footpaths and lumpy stone steps on the muddy road created naturally by others’ footsteps and trails to reach the downstream of the waterfall. Walking along the muddy and steeply footpath, there's nothing to hold despite overgrown weeds beside the road. The smell of soil and the refreshing aroma of the leaves made me engage with nature again after taking some deep breaths of fresh air. The road reminds me of the existence of time while I was walking along, time has left the traces of nature and the traces of people who passed by, and who come and go.

I walk along the muddy road and lumpy stone steps foot by foot, it was too steep and slippery, and the feeling of scratching when my lower legs accidentally touch the weeds overwhelmed me. It was hot and when I was standing beneath the leaves, I can feel the warmth on the part not covered by the shadow of leaves. About 5 minutes journey, I started to feel my neck seep sweat, as I was wearing black, the mosquitoes buzzing around my ears kept distracting me from concentrating on balancing myself on the steep and slippery road. When more stone steps appear, I know that I have almost reach the downstream of the waterfall.

The weather was so hot but when I stepped on the water, I can feel the coolness on my feet. I take every step slow and carefully when I try to step on the stones and walk to the center because the stones in the river are way more slippery because of the moss on the surface, I can even feel my palms sweating and my feet shaking.

After I reached the center of the river, I look up and feels the cool water rushing over my ankle and the warm sun shining on my face, I know this is what I want after spending my life in the mundane city.

Task 1b: Sensory Installation

To recreate the feelings while picnicking in the garden, we design the wearable installation as a hat, combining all the senses at that moment.

The sound of bird chirping, the prickly feeling while touching the branches on the lawn, the freshness of the grass scent, the sweetness smell of the cotton candy, the fabric touch on uneven lawn of cloth, the joy while playing kites.

BREAK-THRU GROW BLOOM

Lotus tube floats on the water and sink when the growing tip appear, just like the coming of Indian immigrants, they coming by taking steamship, wanted to take root in a completely different place, which is Malaysia.

The feeling of unknown, just like the fog blocking the way they were heading to when they are travelling to Malaysia, blurred and doomed.

Flower buds are the flowers about to open, which symbolic of a folded soul that has ability to unfold and open itself up to awakened to the spiritual reality.

After immigrants come to Malaysia, they were being exploited by British colonial government. Hard work, lack of hygiene, bad living condition leading to diseases which made them feel desperate. So they decided to fight for their rights.

As National flower of Indian, lotus also well known as “Flower of Life", because of its tenacious vitality as it able to withstand incredibly environment.

After overcoming all the difficulties, Indian immigrants finally succeed and develop their own culture here. And in 2009, Brickfields officially became the new Little India of Kuala Lumpur. The seedpod represented that not just culture, they even have their descendants here.
