CURATION PROPOSAL

FOR AN ALTERNATIVE PRESENT - BETWEEN EXISTING AND DESIRED

SUMMARY

The proposed theme is structured by SCENARIOS which consider challenges faced by architects in ev eryday life in the 21st Century:

down neighborhoods, “specially where the State is

our times, this proposal refers to Manuel Castells,

absent and has no public action”.

ARCHITECTURE and URBANISM are, by essence, an

intellectual exercise, holding prospective actions thought of and launched in future actions. The pres ent state of emergency faced by humanity, whether in local or global scopes, brings all of us who inhabit this planet to a critical situation demanding ac tion. Therefore, we conceived the 12nd International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo (XII BIA) start ing from a national and international call in order to collectively build (auto)criticism, review of possible actions of broad acknowledgment within such a stressful reality for most people. We are searching for answers, inside and outside of our offices, which are vigorous and offer diversity, generosity and op timism. Our proposal is structured by three inter-relat ed events: [1] INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION, [2] XII MANIFESTOS (SEMINARS AND DEBATES) and [3] SCHOOL COMPETITION (SOCIAL ACTION). The XII BIA is imagined as a DINAMIC event (various venues and dissemination forms), INCLUSIVE (open and invit ing, as a specific and categorical EDUCATIONAL proj ect) and INSTIGATING (allowing for reflection, stimu lating senses and amplifying, to those who participate, the vision on people and the places we live).

for whom “in our society, the public space of the social movements is built up as an hybrid space

composed by black men who are up to 29 years

Based on these scenarios, our proposal for the XII BIA – For an alternative present – between existing and desired is one of resistance and insistence, questioning and breaking the status quo, and ultimately seeking for proposals and innovative projects that take into account the city’s current complexity, which propose collec tive practices, bringing together those who think differently, although sharing dreams of fairer and inclusive cities.

We also strongly recommend that the outcomes of this project should be aligned with the con ceptual lines of the 27th World Congress of Architects / UIA 2020 – All the worlds. Just one world when more than 25 thousand ar chitects will come to Rio de Janeiro in order to discuss topics related to diversity and mixture of cultures; to contemporary technological changes and its impact on the field of Architecture; and ultimately to global challenges as the 1 billion people living in informal settlements.

•• POIESIS  based on the scenarios presented, our curatorial proposal is developed in a network of interventions in the city and may come from arts, literatures, music, etc. The complexity of today´s societies implies higher levels of awareness and increases the pressure for the discovery or inven tion of new ways to avoid the risk of social order collapse. We understand that the integration of all arts is one of the ways that gives meaning to the organization of cities and we open this space to the participation of projects elaborated by plastic artists, poets, literati, among others.

XII INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE OF SÃO PAULO

INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION

AThe Interactive Exhibition will take place during the period established by the open call, potentially at the Pavilhão das Culturas Brasileiras, located inside the Ibirapuera Park, hosting casual events while stands by for its refurbishment´s completion. It is 11 thou sand square meters and would be occupied by both the Interactive Exhibition and Schools´ Exhibition. The venue is easily accessible through public transport and bicycle and could also support a complementary structure for food trucks.

The NETWORKS also irradiate to partner spaces lo cated in another cities and work as complementary and simultaneous exchange platforms with the XII BIA. Projectors are installed both at the Interactive Exhibition, in Sao Paulo, and at the partner venues, in a way that the Biennale Activities are national and in ternationally exhibited at the same time that the part ners share their current activities with the biennale audience. The partners are defined upon invitation of the curatorial team and focusing Academia.

With the aim of strengthening and amplifying the im pact of the XII BIA, a diffuse structure composed by parallel exhibitions and irradiations is proposed, en titled NETWORKS, in both national and international scales. These Networks configure spaces that house practical and exhibiting activities which are parallel and aligned to the curatorial proposal, promoting its movement within the city.
