Dear Friends, Welcome to Xaverian’s 26th annual Gala!
Since our founding in 1963, Xaverian Brothers High School has been dedicated to educating young men in mind, body, and spirit. An essential element of this mission is our program for student athletics. Throughout the past six decades, we have witnessed the positive impact that participation in Xaverian athletics has had on the lives of countless student athletes, their cheering classmates, and our community. Each of our Hawks gain valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, perseverance, and good sportsmanship; and these are lessons that last a lifetime.
Our athletics program would not be what it is today without the exceptional leadership of Charlie Stevenson ’69. His service to Xaverian as a teacher, coach, and director of athletics is central to the story of the Xaverian Hawks. In addition to the records he set and championships he earned—both as a coach and during his tenure as Director of Athletics—Charlie was also one of the driving forces behind the significant expansion of our athletics program in the early 2000s. Xaverian’s facilities now rival that of some college campuses, and that’s in large part due to Charlie’s vision and leadership.
Thank you for joining us this evening as we honor Charlie Stevenson, our 2023 Xaverian Medal recipient, and celebrate all that makes our student athletic programs so exceptional. I appreciate your generous support of our Hawks, both now and in the future.
Respectfully yours,
Jacob A. Conca ’94, Ph.D. Head of SchoolOn behalf of the Board of Trustees, welcome to the 26th annual Xaverian Gala.
What strikes me in a particular way each year is how this event brings together so many different people who are connected to Xaverian Brothers High School, including students, alumni, parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, trustees, and friends. Tonight is no different. The strength of Xaverian is in our community, and that is truly on display this evening.
Thank you for joining us to celebrate our shared Xaverian mission, to honor Charlie Stevenson ’69, and to contribute to our scholarship fund. Your presence here is a gift for our young men, and I hope I can count on your generosity throughout the evening. Our scholarship fund is essential to ensuring that a Xaverian education remains affordable for all qualified students, regardless of their family finances. Your support will have an impact on the lives of our young men for years to come. From their families and mine, thank you.
Sincerely,
Sean P. Fahy ’82, P ’15 Chairperson of the Board of TrusteesCongratulations to our friend, Charlie Stevenson ’69, on this recognition of his incredible impact on the Xaverian community for so many years.
Our best to you, Tish, and your family on this special occasion.

Congratulations, my good friend. It's been a great journey with you from our days at St. John's, to our time at Xaverian, and through all of our decades of friendship. So happy to see you honored in this way.
The Gilmore Family
Charlie Stevenson ’69 began his affiliation with Xaverian Brothers High School in the fall of 1965. He came from Saint John the Evangelist School in Canton to enroll as a freshman because, as he says, “My parents made me.” The Stevensons wanted Charlie to continue with Catholic education and Xaverian was nearby. Little did they know that his affiliation with the Xaverian Brothers would span more than five decades, and young Charlie would ultimately become a treasured Xaverian coach, teacher, and director of athletics. Fittingly, it all began on the gridiron.
Charlie Stevenson excelled as a football player at Xaverian and was an integral member of the team, winning the Catholic Conference and State Championships in his junior year. He served as a captain his senior year, and continued his football career at Bridgewater State. When he was sidelined with an injury after only two seasons, he received a call from Xaverian’s new head football coach, Frank DeFelice. Coach DeFelice asked Charlie if he wanted to try coaching and, in 1971, his coaching career was born. He and Don Mills (who later served as athletic director at Xaverian) were at the helm of Xaverian’s freshman football program, and Charlie wasted no time proving himself. Halfway through the season, Coach DeFelice promoted him to coach at the varsity level. As an assistant on the varsity coaching staff, Charlie joined the ranks of Joe (former Xaverian teacher and coach), (former Xaverian teacher and (who later served
It wasn’t long before Joe Lang was named the head football coach at Malden Catholic, a fellow Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School. Charlie, who was studying to become a teacher, followed Joe to MC to both coach

and complete his student teaching requirements. Robertus Duffy, C.F.X., Malden Catholic headmaster, impressed with Charlie’s work-ethic and commitment, soon hired him as full-time teacher and football coach. He taught for 10 years at Malden Catholic and coached for five. Additionally, for five years at Medford High School with (who would later become one of Xaverian’s athletic directors). When the “Big Dig” was slated to begin in the early 1980s, Charlie, a Milton resident, began thinking about his commute to Malden Catholic. He decided that if an opportunity opened at his alma mater, Xaverian, he’d take it. That opportunity came from Brother Richard Cook, C.F.X. former headmaster, who offered Charlie position and a coaching role alongside then head football coach George McCabe.

As a teacher at Xaverian, Charlie did whatever was asked of him. While his bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in history, he taught accounting and computer science as well. He became the head varsity football coach in 1993 and his 24-year tenure was nothing short of phenomenal. He racked up 206 wins, 14 Catholic Conference Championships, four Division-I South Championships, 10 State Championship appearances, seven State Championship victories, and even recognition by the State Legislature. The crowning achievement will come this April when Charlie will be inducted into the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
In addition to his incredible success on the football field, Charlie also led the varsity golf team to two state championships. As Director of Athletics, a position he held for 20 years, Charlie oversaw the addition of the ultimate disc and rugby programs at Xaverian, bringing the number of sports available to the current 17.
With the opening of the Francis Xavier Division, Charlie was instrumental in the development of Xaverian’s middle school athletic program. He was adamant that the program be comprehensive and open to all. That is why, to this day, Xaverian offers all 17 sports at the middle school level, and all programs remain non-cut for the seventh and eighth grade. In addition, Charlie helped oversee the expansion of the athletic facilities alongside Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X., former headmaster, and Domenic Lalli, former principal. Highlights of their efforts include the construction of our varsity gym, the athletic offices and training room, the Domenic Lalli Strength and Conditioning Center, and the renovated varsity baseball field, football stadium, and track.
For Charlie Stevenson, nothing is achieved in life without the support of your team, and he counts many among his best teammates. First and foremost are his wife, Tish, and his two
daughters, Kristen and Jessica. His gratitude also extends to his fellow coaches, including Al Fornaro ’78, Phil Penza ’67, Denis Lozzi, Brett Anderson ’07, and his team in the athletics office, Deb Gallagher and Paul Mendes
“Xaverian athletics is not one individual. It’s thousands of people,” he says. “And, in particular, I would be remiss if I did not mention my predecessors in the athletic director role: Bro. Bede Benn, CF.X., Armand Caraviello, and Donny Mills. The work they did to establish and build Xaverian athletics was immense. And when I took the role, I had Brother Dan, Domenic, and a very supportive administration that was interested in growing the department and the athletic infrastructure. All of those people made the Xaverian athletics program what it is; it’s really not me. I just happened to be there.”
Charlie Stevenson retired from Xaverian Brothers High School in 2018, 54 years after his parents made him enroll as a student. Before his father passed away in 2016, he told Charlie, “The best investment I ever made was sending you to Xaverian.” Charlie replied, “I think you’re right, dad.”
Charlie, Congratulations. Not only are you a man of success, you are a man of value. I am proud to say I know you.
