DearFriendsofXaverian,
This edition of Xaverian Magazine is aptly titled, TogetherWeRise. Inside these pages you will read about members of our varsity football team who supported each other through the ups and downs of a thrilling season, navigating their personal struggles and triumphs as a team. With a State Championship trophy to show for their efforts, now their next chapters are just beginning. Meet eight of our phenomenal senior Hawk football leaders, starting on page 2.
You will also read about a new internship program called RISE, or Ryken Internship Student Experience. This past summer marked the inaugural class of student interns through this competitive program, offered by Xaverian in collaboration with alumni, current parents, and parents of alumni. It was a phenomenal success for our student interns and employers, and we’re looking forward to our second class of RISE interns this summer. Check out the story on page 8.

Our fall theatrical production, Treasure Island, was a thrilling example of the power of collaboration as students poured their hearts and souls into bringing the show to Xaverian. Cooper Marino ’27 was a brand new student here when he snagged the leading role. Learn more on page 6 about how Cooper found his place in Xaverian theater, as written by TreasureIsland crew member, Joseph Martucci ’24.
Since 1963, Xaverian Brothers, faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, and parents of alumni have worked tirelessly to make our school what it is today. Now 60 years into our story, Xaverian is truly on the rise. Our fidelity to providing the best possible academic and formative experience for our students prevails. Our enrollment is strong. Philanthropic support powers our mission. Our faculty employ cutting-edge, science-informed teaching practices. Our facilities are top notch. And our students continue to excel both inside and outside the classroom.
However, the most critical aspect of Xaverian is the power of our mission. Ours is a lived mission, where every member of our school community collaborates to do their part in providing an exceptional experience for our students and their families. In short, together we rise. We couldn’t do it without you; thank you for being a part of our Xaverian story.
Respectfully yours,
Jacob A. Conca ’94, Ph.D. Head of School

CHARLIE COMELLA ’24
CharlieComella cameintohis senior season asaXaverian Hawk with his star blazing. Hehad committed toBoston Collegefor football and baseball andwas gearing upas co-captainfora final runfor theStateChampionshipthathad eluded his team for thepastthreeyears. However, Charlie’s season ended beforeiteven began. He was playing7on 7 with his teammatesin a summer workout, received a pass, gotthe touchdown(henotes with pride),butbrokehis collarboneintheprocess.Hewas out for 10weeksof play and returnedinagameagainstMalden Catholic. HENRY HASSELBECK’24
HenryHasselbeck is the“golden boy” of Xaverian football, or sohis teammates call him when they’regiving himahard time. Puthim onafootball field, and heseems to instinctively knowwhattodo. Heeven knows whattosay, deftly navigating post-gamepress interviewslike a seasoned professional. It’sinhis genes, butsaying thattakes something away from him thathedeserves toown for himself. Yes,Henry’s grandfather, father, anduncleall playedintheNFL,buthe’s earned his own accolades through hard work, agood attitude, and a strong competitivestreak.Whathedidn’tgetfrom his family, hefound hereatXaverian: brothers worthfighting for.
“Beforeeverygame, GregCelestin is thelastkid torunoutof thetunnel.I say tohim, ‘I gotyour back, you gotmy back.’Then hesays itback tome, and throughoutthegamewe’ll say thattoeach other. Itbecame a cultural thingintheteam this year. It’s ‘I am going todo everythingI can for you, andI expectthesame. You lift meup, I’m going toliftyou up.’”
Henry fielded multipleoffers for collegeplay, including Michigan Stateand Boston College, beforeultimately committing toUCLA.Hewas looking for thebestplacetoestablish his own nameas, atboth Xaverian and BC,he’s theson of Matt Hasselbeck ’93, and nephewof Tim ’96 and Nathanael Hasselbeck’00. Buthedoesn’tthink of thatas “pressure” tosucceed. Hesaysinstead, it’s support. “You havesomany morepeoplecheering for you and wearing your colors. My grandfather and my father(whoboth coached at Xaverian this year) don’task metobean NFLquarterback. They don’task metobe a Pro Bowler. They justask metobemyself, treatkids with respect, and be a good leader.” Thatsaid, Henry wants tobean NFLquarterback and a ProBowler, and he’s working toward thatgoal.
“I really wanttoplayin theNFL;that’s been my dream goal forever.I seeitasapossibility, whereothers seeitas ‘only1% of peopledothat.’But ifIdoeverything right,I believeIcan getthere. If thatis thecase, bless theLord. Andifit’s not, I’m going tobethebestpersonIcan be, thebesthusbandI can be, thebestfriendI can be, and possibly thebestinvestmentbanker inNewYorkCity…you know, ‘GET BREAD’.” hesaysinanunnaturally tough voice, hoping fora laugh. And with thatyou getapeek atthetrademark Henry goofiness you seeoff the field. Not a golden boy, just a teenager looking tobehimselfand spend timewith his brothers.
CALEB BROWN’24
“It’s never toolateIguess,” CalebBrown says of his firsttouchdown as a Hawk.Ithappenedinhis senior season againstCatholicMemorial. Prior to thatmoment, hewas feeling down on football. “Freshman year,I cameinwith a pretty big head,” hesays.“I cameinthinkingIwas going tostartonvarsity. That didn’thappen.SophomoreyearIdidn’tgetany playing time. Ithumbled me. You take a beating every dayin practiceand then you don’tplayin thegame. Itweighs on you, physically and mentally.I started questioning myself, becausefootball wasapretty big partof my dreams. You’rekind of forgotten, becauseyou’renotin thespotlight. Itwas hard tokeepgrinding and doing all of thoseworkouts with nobodywatching.”
Caleb keptworking, and hekeptshowing up. And when twoof theteam’s spotlightplayers wentdown with injuries,Calebwas ready tomakeplays. It turns out, peoplehad been watching: his coaches and his teammate, quarterback Henry Hasselbeck. When itcametimefor theSuper Bowl, Caleb Brown becametheunlikely hero. Headded threemoretouchdowns tohis record when itmattered most, helping power theHawkstoa31-25victory over St. John’s Prep. Thecrowdwas chanting his name, his teammates wereshouting, “WeloveC.L.B.”, and reporters werestanding by toshine a spotlighton him.“I’m definitely going toremember this,” hetold them. “Itfeelslikeadream.”
Caleb, consistently an honor roll studentwithaknack and fondness for math and physics, hopes tostudy engineeringincollege. He’s exploring his options with multipleoffers, looking for therightcombination of academicsand football for thenext four years.Thegoal, hesays,is togotocollegefor free. “Thebetter I doinfootball, themorescholarship I can get, and themoreIcan helpoutmy parents.” His parents arehis rock, his reason, and his rolemodels.“WhenIam down,or whenIdon’twanttogofurther,I think aboutmy parents and how much they’vesacrificed for me. JONATHAN MONTEIRO’24
JonathanMonteiro likes toputonashow, and hewants an audiencetodoit.
That’s howheended upatXaverian.“ThereasonIpicked Xaverian is because wehavethebiggestbleachers, andIwanted toplay for thebiggestcrowd. When I’m playing, thecrowd makes mefeel electric–electricity going through me–because everyoneis herefor onereason and that’s towatch us play.”
ButJonathan’s showmanshipis aboutmorethan applause. Hewants tobean example. “WhereI’m from, nobody ever madeitthis far,” hesays.“I’m trying to showthem thatthere’salottothis world. You don’thavetolivelikethis. You can comeouthere, you can getagood job. Someoneis going tobetherefor you. That’s thepersonIwanttobe. Moral of thestory,Iwantthem toseesomething and realizethey can bemoreinlifethan whatthey’rebound toberightnow.”
Jonathan is committed toplay atLiberty University next year. He’ll bethefirstin his family toattend and graduatefrom college. It’s his family hecredits with helping him toseetheopportunitiesinfrontof him.His mom gives ittohim straight. “She is someonewhois going totell youif you’rewrong whether you likeitor not, no matter howbad thesituation is.” His dad, hesays, showed him theway out. “He definitely has his ups and a wholelotof downs.Even with that, heshowed methe lifeyou canlivewhen you work hard and you dotherightthing. Heshowed me thatif you play your cards right, keep aclean record, stay outof troublewith the law, gotocollegefor free, and getadegree, you can expand yourselfon an absurd level. You never knowwhattypeof opportunities will comeyour way.”
For Jonathan,Xaverian was oneof thoseopportunities.“Justbeing hereis a benefit,” hesays.“TheteachersIhavehad here, Mr. MacKinnon,Mr. Watson,Mr. Bowers,Mr. Iannoni, thoseteachers really helped mebecome a better studentand a better person. This placedefinitely feelslikehome.”
ANDREW DUFAULT’24
Andrew“Hammy”Dufault had a singular purposethis year; towinthestate championship. Considered oneof thebesthigh school football long snappersin thecountry, Andrewwas selected for theU.S.Army All-American Bowl and committed inAugusttoplay atPenn State. With thatlocked down, his senior season was all about securing theMIAA Division 1 trophy atGilletteStadium. His gameplan? Discipline. Discipline. Discipline. That’s howheearned theco-captaintitleand a spoton the startinglineof thevarsity team, and that’s whatheknewitwould taketohang theState Championshipbannerinthevarsitygymnasium.
“Therearetwodifferenttypes of players,” Andrewexplains.“Therearetheones who comeandliftinthemorning, doall of therightthings, getsleep, etc., and there’s kids whodon’t. ThreetimesaweekIgetupat 5:00 a.m., comehereat6:00and lift until7:00, and then have a three-hour practiceafter school. It’s noteasy. Disciplineisn’tdoing the rightthing when Mr. Guinan(Dean of Students)is walking around. It’s ‘areyouwilling todowhatyou need tosucceed, tomakeyourself differentfrom everybody else, torise tothetop?’. Whoever isinfrontneeds tobeabletogeteveryonecorralled and doing the rightthing, tobethebestversion of Xaverian.”
Rising tothetopis something Andrewhas been doing sincemiddleschool, when he’d been told hewas toosmall toplay offensiveline. Hetook uplong snapping as a result, and started atXaverianinseventh grade. By freshman year, hewas playingvarsity and learning from thestrong captains and players whocamebeforehim, like Jack Funke’22 (BC), MikeBerlutti ’21 (Tufts), and JonMould ’23 (Harvard).
When itcametimetotakethefield atGilletteand lead theHawksas oneof this year’s captains,Andrewsays itwas nerve-wracking atfirst. Hesettled down once thegamegotunderway and then itwas all business.“Itwas definitely something I won’tforget, when itfinally ended andI could celebrateon thefield. Itreally putinto perspectivehowmuch work weputinover thecourseof theseason.” Itwas all worth it as theylifted thattrophy overhead tothecheers of classmates, family, and friends.

MIKE O’CONNOR’24
Mike“Okie”O’Connor joins CharlieComella and Henry Hasselbeck on thegridiron as football legacies…all threeof theirfathers having donned theblueand goldinthe1990s. As co-captain,he’saleader on thefield, buthe’s alsoaleader for all Xaverian students as Class Presidentof the StudentCouncil, a rolehehas held for four years.
WhileMikesays football is his passion,it’s not a career goal for him.Instead, it’sapathway tocollege. He’s committed toTrinity Collegeinthefall and says he is excited abouttheacademicopportunities hewillfind there. “I knowIam not going totheNFL,butit’sadream cometruetobeplaying for four moreyears. Iwanted tousefootball togetmetoacollegethatwould havebeen difficult for meotherwise.Iwas looking for good academicsalong withagood football teamI could call my family. Oncefootball is over,Iwanttobeleftwithastrong foundation and with connections for networking.”
Justas Mike’s collegeplaninvolvesawell-rounded approach, heexperienced Xaverian thesameway, exploring opportunitiesinleadership, campus ministry, athletics, and academics.“I camewith footballinmind,” hesays,“butonce you gethere, you open your eyes and realizethere’s way moretoXaverian than football. It’s just a small aspectof theopportunities availabletoyou, and I’ve learned thatby gettinginvolvedindifferentaspects of theschool.”
When Mikesays he’s looking fora family outof Trinity football, hemeanslike thefamily hefound asaHawk.Henotes,“Therearesomany times during the season when Coach says,‘Look attheguys around you, recognizethefamily you have, and havethatbewhatyou’replaying for, rather than making yourselflook good.’” says Mike. Ittook on an even deeper meaning for this year’s team when twoplayers tragically lostfamily members.“I think inaweek’s span, wehad Will Benting’25 losehis brother and MattSpaulding ’26 losehis father, backto-back.Itwas really beautiful toseehowweall cametogether tosupportone another, and then howwewentouton thefield and played for oneanother. We played for thelostmembers of our teammates’families.”
DENZIL PIERRE ’24
Thefuturefor DenzilPierre is moreupin theairthan his fellowHawks, butit’s notfor lack of talentordrive. Thetruth is thatDenzil tooka risk coming toXaverian, and itcosthimawholeseason.
Denzilwasajunior year transfer toClapboardtreeStreet, and heknew therewasapossibility thattheMIAA mightnotgivehimawaiver toplay football- his sport, his passion, and whathesees as his(and his family’s) tickettoabetter future. Heknewhis junior season wascritical togetting looks from NCAA schools, buttheMIAA denied his request. Faced with thechoice between continuinginBoston PublicSchools and playing his junior season, or transferring toXaverian and losing his chancetoplay, hesays,“Itwas an easydecision.”
Butlifehasn’tbeen easy for Denzil— being evicted, having utilities cut off, losing his sister toviolence, and having neighborhood friendsdiefar too young. He’s someoneyou would expecttohave a chipon his shoulder, but instead hepraises God for his blessings.Denzil is playing thelong game. “No matter whereyou’refrom, you can makeittowhereyouwanttobeif you putin theeffort,” hesays.
Whilehecouldn’tcompetewith theHawkshis junior year, hecould practice with them, and heputintheeffortyear-round. Hetook thegridiron by storm when hefinally gotback outunder theFriday nightlights this year, helping powertheHawkstoaD1StateChampionship. And nowhewaits fora college offer. Thescholarshipmoney would be a gamechanger, and hewants tomakeit tothe NFL sothathecan providefor his mother and his extended family.
“Being a young kidintoday’s society, it’s hard tofigureoutwhatyou’re going todointhefutureor howyou’regoing tobeatthegiantinfrontof you. ButGod gives mepeaceof mind, knowing thateverything will beOKin theend.”

COLLEGE counseling
WrittenbyKieranMaguire ’24, CommunicationsCorps
Itseems there’s nothing quiteas overwhelming for a studentthan applying tocollege. Luckily atXaverian, the counseling team is theretopartner with students (and parents!) through theprocess.Xaverian’s counseling program accounts for theeffortand timethatgoesinto choosing therightcollegefor each and every student, and that’s why much of theprocess is builtintothecurriculum, startingin ninth grade. Counselors meetwith studentsinall gradelevels throughouttheyearinspecial counseling seminars thatoccur during theschool day. Thecurriculumis age-appropriateto helpstudents navigateeverything from study skills and making friends, toexploringcareeroptions.Thecollegeprepprocess beginsinfreshman counseling classes as students ready for thePSAT and areencouraged tobeinvolvedinextracurricular activities and servicetohelpthem acclimatetohigh school, meetnewfriends, andbegintobuildtheirresume.
In sophomoreyear, students focus on finding theirown strengths andinterests, considering whatfuturecareer paths appeal tothem, researching majors, and learning about networking. They setuptheirSCOIR accounts,an online platform through which thecounseling team partners with studentsintheircollegesearch and application process. In junior year, students aregiven theXaverian Brothers College ResourceGuidebook, and thecollegeapplication process picks upin pace. Whether it’s attending collegefairs, participating in mockinterviews, securingteacherrecommendations, or prepping for theSAT or ACT, thecounseling team is thereto supportstudents through every step in theprocess.Alsoin junioryear, studentswritetheircollegeessaysintheirEnglish class.Thepersonal essay isavery importantpartof thecollege application, and students areencouraged tolettheirown voice and perspectiveshinethrough theirwriting.
Over thesummer beforesenior year, thecounseling departmentoffersafour-dayintensivecourseforstudents looking for an organized, structuredway tostarttheircollege applications with theircounselors availabletohelpthem during theprocess.Throughoutthis week, students begin theirCommon Application, learn aboutadmissions and whatcolleges arelooking forinapplicants, and revisetheir essays with thehelpof Xaverian school counselors and college admissions staff. Several collegerepresentatives visitthroughout theweek and offer theirperspectiveon whatthey arelooking forinastudent, answerquestions, reviewessays, andconduct mock interviews.Students whoattend notonly getahead start on theirapplications, butlearn howtheir individual gifts and talents can stand outonahigh school resume.
Oncetheapplications areinand decisions aremailed, students can utilizetheirone-on-onemeetings with their counselors toreviewtheiroptions and maketherightchoice for theircareer and theirbudget. By incorporating thecollege search processintothecurriculumand providing ample resources and support, Xaverian’s counseling team ensures that every studenthas “bestfit” higher learning options from which tochoose.

Remarkably, while he continually seeks fresh avenues to challenge and inspire students, he possesses an unwavering commitment to upholding the core Xaverian values of Simplicity, Compassion, Zeal, Trust, and Humility in all his endeavors. I have been exceptionally fortunate to have experienced his influence as both a student and an athlete. Now, I find myself even more fortunate to consider him a mentor, colleague, and friend. His commitment to our community and his embodiment of the Xaverian Brothers’ mission serve as an enduring example for us all.

October24,2023was an evening to rememberat800Clapboardtree Street. TheXaverian theaterwas packed with students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni eager tobepresentfor AnEvening with JohnJ.Sullivan ’77 Theairwas buzzing with anticipation and whispers of “Is thathim?” as Ambassador Sullivan(now retired)satinhis frontrowseat, flanked by sixcurrentstudents ranging from eighth to twelfth grade. Following a brief introduction from Social Studies DepartmentChair, Mr. PeterBall ’10, JoshuaBarry ’24 took thestagetoserveasmoderatorforastudentled paneldiscussion with theAmbassador.
Tounderstand thefull scopeof thenight and itsinspiration, weneed torewind to thesummer of2023and an idea thatwas proposed by Ambassador Sullivan himself, a then newly minted member of Xaverian’s Board of Trustees;heoffered tocomespeak totheXaverian community abouthis work. This was an opportunity toogood toturn down.Ambassador John J. Sullivan’77 has made a career asapublicservantand is widely respected across thepolitical spectrum. He has held prominentrolesinboth Republican and Democraticadministrations, perhaps mostnotably serving as theUnited States Deputy Secretary of Statefrom May of2017 - December of2019and mostrecently as the United States Ambassador toRussia from
Februaryof 2020 - Septemberof2022.
Xaverian Principal Dr. Michael Nicholson, P’29 quickly convened a faculty and staff committeewith theaim ofcreating a studentpanel toconduct a publicforumwith theAmbassador.Itwasimportantthatthe students,Dr. Nicholson noted, “beinvolved indifferentevents and activities on campus, representing thediversity and richness of our studentpopulation.” Theadministration wanted students tohavetheonce-in-a-lifetime opportunitytosharethestagewithafellow Hawk whoseprofessionalimpacthas been felt around theworld. Thestudents conducted themselves with maturity and poise, and the eventwentoff without a hitch. This was thanks inparttothestellarperformanceofstudent moderator Josh Barry whokeptthetempoof thenightflowing. “This was thebiggestpublic speaking eventI’veever done,” says Barry. “I had topractice a bunch atmy houseand I’m suretheneighbors weren’ttoohappy aboutmy super loud voice,” hejokes.
Sophomorepanelist BeckettDelleo comments thatsharing thestagewith the Former Ambassadorwas “surreal” and that theexperiencewentbyinaflash. “I think that everyonewouldhavelistenedtoAmbassador Sullivan’s experiences for another hour, or even longer,” headds.Beckett, a veteran of Xaverian’s HawkNews studentbroadcast, settled his nerves almostimmediately upon taking his placeon stage. “I justtried tofind thefewempty seats and convincemyselfthere weren’tmany peoplethere…even though it
waspacked,” herecalled.
In theweeksleading uptotheevent, theopportunity tosubmit a question to Ambassador Sullivan was extended totheentire faculty, staff, and studentpopulation.Of the hundreds of questions received, many focused on issueslikethecurrentconflictbetween Israel and Palestine, and whatitwas really liketo goface-to-facewith VladmirPutin. However, someprovided moreinsightintoSullivan himself, focusing on his day-to-daylife, such as his favoritehigh school lunch(a bologna sandwich),hisdream job(CIA director or Red Sox bullpen catcher),and theXaverianvaluehe finds mostimportantinhislife(humility).
While AnEveningwithJohnJ.Sullivan’77 coveredawiderangeofdifficulttopics impacting our world today, itwas common for Mr. Sullivan tointerjectsomeof his signature humor, a welcomeway tolighten themood surrounding serious issues. “Comparing Putin toWhitey Bulger…theway thatheputthat was very cool. Itwasarelatablefirst-person perspectiveon whathe[Putin]is really like,” says Josh.
Panelist JonathanPinelli ’24 found AmbassadorSullivan’sinsightstobearefreshing changefrom whathecalls the“dehumanized and prideful” messaging prevalentinmodern politics.“Itwas really beneficial toseesomeone soknowledgeable, personable, and humble,” headds.Jonathan’sfellowpanelist Isaiah Nkata’27 summed uptheexperiencebest, and hedid itin justoneword: “perfect.”

My proudest accomplishment since leaving Xaverian is…being a Research Assistant Intern at Massachusetts General Hospital’s ICU Precision Medicine Laboratory and having the opportunity to utilize artificial intelligence and clinical informatics in analyzing personalized medicine regimens.
My advice to current Xaverian students is…to pursue what interests you and stick with that path; you are bound to find success along the way.
Shoutoutto...Mr. Howard, whose chemistry and biochemistry classes helped me realize my passion for medicine and the sciences, alongside allowing me to develop my passion into a new club, “X-Ploring the World of Modern Sciences.”
Xaverian gave me the gift of...the ability to approach challenges with confidence and perseverance.

The thing I learned at Xaverian that helps me the most in college is...time management and how to make a good impression.
Xaverian gave me the gift of…friends that I will have for the rest of my life.
My advice to current Xaverian students is…enjoy the time you have with each other. I enjoy college and the people I have met, but I miss the friends that I made at Xaverian.
Shoutoutto...Mr. McDonald: Was a great mentor for me the whole six years and I spent a lot of time in his office.
Ms.Vona: I believe she’s one of the first teachers I made a real connection with during my freshman year, and she always greeted me with a smile.
Coach Fornaro: He was always willing to help me in football and taught me how to lift the right way.
The three things I miss the most about Xaverian are… community, friendships, and the emphasis on faith.

The thing I learned at Xaverian that helps me the most in college i the importance of asking questions. Whether it’s in the classroom or o of it, asking questions about things that make you curious can open d you didn’t even know were there
Xaverian gave me the gift of…being able to reflect. Ever y so often I find myself wondering what I could have done differently when I make a mistake or something doesn’t go my way. Usually I’m able to separate what I wasn’t able to control and what I was able to control. From there, it’s easier for me to figure out where I can improve myself and how I can go about doing that. I really think it has ser ved me well and will continue to do so in the future
Shoutout to…Mr. Tranfaglia. It’s crazy to think that I’m 21 years old now, and I met Mr. T when I was 12. He went from being my social studies teacher in seventh grade, to being my golf coach senior year, and now to being someone I call a really good friend. I still take notes the same way he taught me all the way back in seventh grade, and I certainly would not be where I am today without Mr. T and all of the other great teachers at Xaverian.

My career goals are...architect, community designer, sustainable, designer, urban planner.
The thing I learned at Xaverian that helps me the most in college is...how important communication and connection are!
My proudest accomplishment since leaving Xaverian is… being awarded a $6,500 grant by the City of New Orleans for an urban gardening and landscape architecture project.
Shoutoutto…There are many incredible teachers at Xaverian, but I have to go with Mr. Kidd, who coincidentally is also my dad. He is constantly supportive and loving, and raised me to be the person I am today. He also made me a much better singer (sign up for choir!).
