In the very early months of 2010, right after New Year’s Day, the late Paul Taylor, aka “Chief”, the father of Hawgstock, reached out to me about doing up an article with pictures for a magazine. At the time we helped with the rally down there, organizing the medical tent and helping out with whatever we could for the rally. With the other work that I had been doing with Paul for the rally, he seemed to think that I had a knack for writing and capturing some photos. This really did not go anywhere except for in reference to the rally. Now, why did Paul ask me about doing an article you may ask? Well, the guy that started Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa in November of 2009 asked Paul to submit a press release about the rally for his publication. Paul then tasked me with doing said task, and away I went. I wrote up a piece about the rally, sorted through photos to find those suitable for print in a family friendly magazine, and we were off to the races, so to speak.

That article and pictures were published, and even before that issue hit the shelves, the owner of TRMI contacted me and asked if I would start doing some writing and do some interviews with people and subsequent articles for the magazine. He gave me a list of places he would like me to go, and I decided to hit it full steam and start traveling on my days off and doing some work for the magazine. I went to a few different shops, a few different dealerships, some of the swap meets and bike shows, and started to get a collection of notes and ideas for other articles and such. Then he asked if I could travel to LeClaire to chat with the “American Pickers” and do an article and photo spread on them. I obliged and ended up with that article being published in every other state issue

Jewel graces the cover and calendar this month atop one of Nate Ullriche’s two wheeled treasures. This bad ass stretched and raked chopper with sharp angular geometry seemed to compliment the curves of Jewel quite wonderfully. Nate just released his new 2024 Biker Babe Calendar that can be found online at www.Natanic.com. Although Jewel is not on the pages of the 2024 calendar, I would bet the life savings she will be in the 2025 calendar that Nate has already started shooting for. Enjoy!

of Thunder Roads. I thought that was all too cool, and was pretty proud of myself. I was having fun doing something out of my norm, and was learning a ton of stuff, and meeting tons more cool people all around Iowa.

Three months after the initial request to do an article, I was doing quite a few articles for the magazine. In the first part of April, the former owner had decided in about six months that Iowa magazine publishing was not his forte’. Since I was doing many of the articles, and had been helping him plan the layout and photos, he said to me one morning, “Hey Vernon, why don’t you just buy the magazine and run it?” This totally floored me, as I had no intention of taking the magazine over, but thought it was something really cool for Iowa, and if he wasn’t going to keep doing it, someone should.

For the June 2010 Issue of Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa, there were new owners as we took the plunge and decided that we could do the magazine as a part time side line while I did my other full time gig to pay the bills. This was an awesome deal, as I was able to have a flexible schedule and plan my time accordingly to get things done on all fronts. This worked very well and the magazine started to grow and get more widely known right here in our great state. All was well until April of 2012, and then I find out that my contract with the SW Iowa hospitals for disaster preparedness was going away. The state decided to keep the money at the state level and stop providing regional support for the hospitals and I was going to be without a job.

I had to look at all angles and decide to ditch the magazine and all that we had put into it for two years, jump head first into the magazine and make a part time sideline into a full time plus gig, or try to find another contract that would allow for a full time job with flexible hours to be able to do that and the magazine simultaneously. I decided to keep doing some teaching and small contract work and jump into the magazine full time, and here we are today. This is our 157th issue that we have printed in the past 13 years plus timeline, and happy as hell about the way things have turned out. We have amazing sponsors that have helped us keep this going for so long, and amazing readers that keep following us month after month. We thank you all for the support, and look forward to many more issues!

Ride it like you stole it!

I recently did something that I never thought I would do. I had Mark replace the nice, rumbly after-market pipes on my Heritage with stock pipes. It was a tough decision to make. I mean, I started off on a Honda Shadow with Cobra pipes, after which I moved to my Dyna, which had some head-turning straight pipes, so why, after 19 years of street riding would I try to turn my Heritage into a “Silent Gray Fellow”? In a word: my mother.

A couple of summers ago, Mark and I had already spent a busy few days out at Sturgis and finally had the perfect combo of free time and good weather to allow us to take a longer ride through the hills and canyons, starting with Spearfish and ending with Vanocker. By the time we pulled into Rapid City for a pitstop at the Harley shop, I noticed something very unpleasant. My ears were ringing. Now mind you, since getting the Dyna, I had always worn earplugs when I rode, so I was a bit unhappy. I was playing by the rules, so that wasn’t supposed to happen! I crossed my fingers and hoped the ringing would go away.

Nope, it sure didn’t. So, I began researching different earplugs and quieter pipes. Because if there was one thing I didn’t want to have happen, it was to turn into my mother. I’ll set the scene, and you’ll soon understand.

Mom and I were in my folks’ kitchen on the main floor, working on meal prep and chatting. She remembered something she wanted to tell my dad, who was in the basement, so she went to the top of the wide-open stairwell.

“Yoo-Hoo! Frank!”, Mom called.

“Yes?” My dad’s answer was a bit muffled, sounding like he was in his workshop.

Mom paused and waited. Then: “Frank?”

“Yes?” my dad said again – this time louder.

Mom waited again. And, a third time: “Frank? Honey?” she called. Then, she lowered her voice and laughed good-naturedly. “Your Daddy has gotten so hard of hearing.”

I had a super difficult time keeping a straight face during that little interchange, but it stuck in my mind for a couple of reasons. First, I decided that I shouldn’t tempt iffy auditory genetics, so I kicked my loud pipes to the curb in an effort to preserve my hearing. And second, it made me think about spiritual deafness.

To be honest, we’re all a lot like my mom in that we talk away to the Lord, but don’t hear his answer. My mom had a legitimate excuse. We do not.

Much of the time we’re asking questions about things that the Lord has already addressed in the Bible. “It’s ok if I sleep with my girlfriend, right? I mean, neither of us are dating anyone else.” “My boss promised me a raise and didn’t come through, so I think it’s ok for me to pay him back for his lie by working at my own pace now.” “Little white lies are ok, right? I mean, I paid $100 for a pair of shoes but told my husband I got them on sale for $30. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him and then I don’t have to listen to him gripe. It’s a win-win situation!” Like my dad, God has already spoken. He talked about those very issues in the Ten Commandments. But we like to have our

own way, so like children, we keep asking the same questions, hoping to get different answers.

In the 8th chapter of the book of John, Jesus tells us that the real reason we do this is because we don’t want to accept God’s truth. We would rather come up with our own measurement of “truth” that supports our desires than submit to God and have to give up something we really want. None of us is innocent in this. We’ve all had our moments of denying the truth - whether the situation was as small as buying the truck of our dreams that we knew we couldn’t afford, or as big as lobbying in favor of the idea that a person’s feelings can be truer than an immutable biological fact. No matter what you’re living in denial about, you can be sure of this: at some point, the piper will appear and will want to be paid.

I don’t know about you, but I make enough mistakes when I’m TRYING to be obedient. I don’t need to pile willful rebellion on top of my natural stupidity. I think that when I have unanswered questions I’ll keep checking back with God’s word and also keep checking my attitude to make sure I’m not veering off on my own path out of impatience. That’s the route Jesus directed us to follow in that same chapter of John when he said, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Choose truth = Choose freedom.

not so USELESS RAMBLINGS not so USELESS RAMBLINGS Make Mine Freedom

the entire plan of the pushers of the ism’s. They need more people dependent upon the government for the plan to work, because if you can’t stand on your own two feet, if you are not responsible for your own prosperity, in the pursuit of getting a little more from the government, you will start to let them do whatever they want. And they know this. They are counting on it.

Recently, while wasting my brain cells on social media, I came across an old animation. I actually remember seeing it as a child, but back then I didn’t understand or even care about the message it was trying to convey. Today, I understand it all too well.

Make Mine Freedom was produced in 1948 as “one of a series of films by the Extension Department of Harding College to create a deeper understanding of what has made America the finest place in the world to live,” according to the first few seconds of the video. Seventy-five years later and Dr. Utopia has sold too many of you on the “ISM” potion. Once you see the video, you’ll understand that reference. Visit my Not So Useless Ramblings Facebook page (link at the bottom of this article and a QR code) and you’ll find the link to the video.

The pushers of the ism’s have been able to indoctrinate, to dumb down, a good portion of the population. They’ve been able to turn the education system into a factory that produces low information lemmings, educated just enough to keep them paying their taxes and keeping their mouths shut. The lemmings were never taught the true history of our nation. They don’t know what has happened around the world under the various regimes that have kept the citizens of other countries in poverty and servitude; slaves to their governments. Sadly, that is what is being pushed for here on American soil.

We’ve allowed our currency to be completely destroyed. The dollar is getting to the point where it is almost as useless as a Venezuelan bolivar. We’ll be just like the citizens of Venezuela hauling a wheelbarrow full of cash to the store to purchase a single loaf of bread, IF there is actually a loaf available, if we aren’t careful.

Massive corporations, many of them foreign owned entities, have taken over the market and have forced all the Mom & Pop shops to close their doors thanks to the idiotic push with the “Fight for $15.” All of those employees end up losing their jobs and a good portion of them end up on, or on more, government assistance so they can survive. This is

The real bitch of this is that the government raises the minimum wage to $15 an hour, the companies that can’t afford to pay their employees this wage either fire half of their staff or completely fold, then the government gets to demonize those companies, “Look at these evil companies firing their people rather than losing money on their business!” We’ve already seen it happen all across the nation.

I believe this is a very strong argument for why we need actual business people to enter into politics and our government rather than career politicians. The businessmen are geared toward prosperity and building up everything where the career politicians are only geared toward their own bank accounts and their own power.

Speaking of foreign infiltration of US soil, I’ve read articles about how China has been purchasing very large portions of US farmland, aside from owning many of the US based food production companies. Hell, they own the Smithfield Foods in my hometown. There were also recent reports of the Chinese operating a “secret police station” in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood. There were at least 34 “officers” operating out of that one station. If there is one, I’m sure there are more. Then if you switch to the “left coast” of the US, you’ll find recent news that the city of San Francisco is in dire need of new police officers, but they can’t seem to find anyone willing to do the job. I can’t imagine why. (insert sarcasm emoji here) Due to the lack of new recruits, they are now proposing that they drop the US citizenship requirement to become a police officer. What?

Since California has become a sanctuary for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of illegal aliens, what are the chances that the south of the border cartels will take full advantage of this and infiltrate the police departments? Who wants to bet against me?

Another push from the Dr. Utopia’s ism addicted morons is getting more and more people out of the country and rural areas and into bigger and bigger cities. They understand that people in large groups, concentrated populations, have a tendency to all begin to think alike. If vast population centers all think alike, it’s easier to get any outliers to begin

www.thunderroadsiowa.com 22 - TRMI JUNE 2023 Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

to change to fit in. Thus creates the “hive mind” effect.

This will help usher in the idea of the “15 Minute City” or “Smart Cities” across the nation. I do believe that the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada has been registered as the first 15-minute city in North America. A 15-minute city is one where you will be able to walk or bike to anything you need within 15 minutes. Groceries, doctor’s office, work, etc. all within 15 minutes from your door. Sounds convenient, right? But we all should know that convenience comes at a cost; this is at the cost of your freedoms.

When these cities are implemented with all the SMART (Surveillance Monitoring Analysis Reporting Technology) technology you are now in a concentration camp. Your every move is monitored. Your digital ID and the digital dollar will track every movement, every cent you were allowed to spend, and even your carbon footprint. The World Economic Forum has already implemented this in 32 cities across 22 countries worldwide.

Well now I suppose you’re saying that you just won’t move to one of these mass population centers; you’ll just stay out in the rural areas or in your small town USA. Sounds like a great plan. I’m with you. However, that’s where Agenda 2030 (formerly Agenda 2021 pushed by the United Nations and the World Economic Forum) comes in. There are parts of Agenda 2030, if it actually becomes law, that state that if the government deems the land and water around you to be polluted, they can force you off of your land and into these cities. You can either comply with government edict or be jailed, or they might even just Ruby Ridge your ass.

Conspiracy theories galore, right? But just look around at the news in this country. When you consider that China has bought up massive amounts of US farmland and many food processing plants, many other food processing plants have suffered massive fires or catastrophic accidents, there have been huge fires that killed very large numbers of beef & dairy cattle, there were massive bird flu outbreaks in chicken hatcheries where millions of birds were euthanized, an increase in train derailments where toxic chemicals were spilled polluting land, groundwater and rivers, and other ecological disasters.

Are they truly conspiracy theories if these things are actually happening? Anyway, I’m off to the store; I need to buy some more tin foil to make a new hat.

Vernon and I were on a return trip from the Rock Island Parts Girl Swap Meet when the need for some supper hit us. We were quickly approaching Boone, so decided to swing into The Colorado Grill and see what appetizing options might be inside. The lot was pretty busy for a Sunday, which is usually a good first sign. When we entered, the host was quick to greet us and show us to our table. The place was busy, filled with families and tables covered with delicious looking plates. Updated hours now show that they are closed on Sunday, so please call ahead to verify before making the trip. We ordered a couple of iced teas and began to look over the menu. They offer an appetizer menu with everything from onion rings to Bavarian pretzels with beer cheese.

The “Mile High” dinners offer various seafood, chicken, pork, and beef options all served with a breadstick and choice of two sides: Battered or Crinkle Cut Fries, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, Cottage

Cheese Baked Potato, Fried Onions, Sauteed Veggies, Soup, or Applesauce. You can also upgrade your side options, as well as add caramelized onions and mushrooms, or even shrimp or chicken breast to your dinner. There are a couple of pasta dishes as well as some tasty sandwich options like tenderloins and Phillys. A vast assortment of salads and wraps also adorn the menu, but what really caught our eyes on our visit was the burger selection.

Our waitress returned with our drinks and we asked a few questions. She was very helpful with our decision-making process, and when all was said and done Vernon ordered an Avalanche Burger, which was a 6 oz burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, Swiss cheese, sauteed mushrooms, crispy fried onions, and a creamy steak sauce. Vernon ordered his burger medium, and it came out perfectly cooked and juicy. The Brioche bun was fresh and lightly toasted. Vernon ordered the crinkle cut fries as a side, and they were a golden, hot, and delicious accompaniment to his burger. I ordered the Popper Burger, which is also a 6 oz patty, but topped with pepperjack cheese, jalapeno peppers, cream cheese, and homemade jalapeno pepper jelly atop a toasted Brioche bun. Two golden fried jalapeno poppers garnished the burger. As a side, I ordered the battered fries and they did not disappoint. Salty, crisp, fluffy potato goodness was a perfect pairing for my spicy burger.

Great Friends Great Food Great Fun is the motto at The Colorado Grill, and they certainly hit the nail on the head with that one. Originally established in 1997, they have since branched out to include several additional locations in the central Iowa region, so if Boone is too far out of your way, be sure to look up one of the other locations for some delicious food and friendly service. Be sure to tell them that Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa sent you!

See you on the road!

What’s the difference between a pickpocket and a peeping tom? One snatches your watch. The other watches your snatch.

A male whale and a female whale see a fishing boat with a large harpoon. The male whale recognized the ship that caught his dad whale a year ago. He asks the female whale “let’s both get under the boat, blow air out of our air holes, and it might topple the ship.” They go ahead and do it, with success: the fish boat sinks. However, the seamen from the boat manage to swim away, almost reaching the shore. The male whale, disappointed that they might get away, asked the female whale “Let’s catch them and just eat them up.” But this time, the female whale doesn’t want to join in: “Look, I did the blow job just like you asked, but I really don’t want to swallow the seamen”.

Two different fish swim into a wall… One turns to the other and says, “Dam!

A family is at the zoo and they get to the elephants when the daughter notices something odd so she looks at her mom and says, “Mom what’s that thing hanging down from the elephant?” She answers, “That’s his trunk.” “No, in the back,” the daughter says. “That’s his tail.” “No, underneath!” The mother blushes and says, “Oh that’s nothing.” The daughter is confused, so she asks her dad. “Dad, what’s that thing hanging down under the elephant?” “Oh, that’s his penis,” the dad replies. “Why when I asked Mommy did she say it was nothing?” “Oh, she’s just spoiled.”

Why is masturbation just like procrastination? It’s all good until you realize you’re only screwing yourself.

I was in a barbershop when a man and his young son walked in to get a haircut. The man asked the barber to give his son a haircut while he shopped for groceries nearby. The barber finished giving the haircut but there was no sign of the father. An hour passed, two hours passed. We finally asked the son where his father was. The boy shocked us by saying, “That man was not my father. He just told me that if I wanted to get a free haircut at the barbershop, I should come with him.”

A little boy and his father are walking down the street, and they see two dogs having sex. The little boy asks his father, “Daddy, what are they doing?” The father says, “Making a puppy.” So they walk on and go home. A few days later, the little boy walks in on his parents having sex. The little boy says, “Daddy, what are you doing?” The father replies, “Making a baby.” The little boy says, “Can you turn mommy over? I’d rather have a puppy.”

A husband says to his wife, “Why don’t you tell me when you orgasm?” She replies, “I don’t like calling you when you’re at work.”

A redneck’s father passed away in his sleep. So in the morning, he calls 911 to come pick up the body. The 911 operator told him that she would send someone out right away. “Where do you live?” asked the operator. He replied, “At the end of Eucalyptus Drive.” The operator asked, “Can you spell that for me? There was a long pause and finally he said, “How ‘bout if I drag him over to Oak Street and you pick him up there?”

Three boys were discussing their father’s favorite foods. The first kid said his father loves to eat burgers. The second boy said his father loves KFC. The third boy said his father loves to eat light. The other two boys questioned how his dad does that. The third boy replied, “Every night I hear my daddy tell mommy to turn off the light so he can eat it.”

I wonder what my parents did to fight boredom before the internet. I asked my 19 brothers and sisters, and they didn’t know either.

The wife and I took a long, leisurely drive out to the country and pulled over to fill up our car’s gas tank and tires... She was surprised to see that the station had a fee to fi ll the tires and asked me, “Why in the world do they charge for AIR?!” I responded, “Inflation.”

During my check-up I asked the Doctor, “Do you think I’ll live a long and healthy life then?” He replied, “I doubt it somehow. Mercury is in Uranus right now.” I said, “I don’t go in for any of that astrology nonsense.” He replied, “Neither do I. My thermometer just broke.”

A man is walking through the woods when he sees a bear charging at him. He books it, but he knows he can’t outrun a bear for long, so he starts praying, “Dear Lord, I beseech thee. My nagging wife died suddenly on a trip to Jerusalem. A tough old cowboy from Texas counseled his granddaughter that if she wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gun powder on her oatmeal every morning. The granddaughter did this religiously until the age of 103, when she died. An eight-year old boy had never spoken a word. One afternoon, as he sat eating his lunch he turned to his mother and said, “The soup is cold.” His astonished mother exclaimed, “Son, I’ve waited so long to hear you speak. So, the wife and I were in town shopping... And as we came out of a store, three girls aged between 18 and 20 walked by, wearing tiny cropped tops and short short skirts. One of them, a tall blonde, had really fantastic, long, toned and tanned legs. I gently nudge d my wife and said, “I bet you wish you still had legs like that!”. She got really upset with me... In fact I could still hear her sobbing as I wheeled her up the ramp into the next store.

A man was driving down the road when a policeman stopped him. The officer looked in the back of the man’s truck and said, “Why are these penguins in your truck?” The man replied, “These are my penguins. They belong to me.” “You need to take them to the zoo,” the policeman said. The next day, the officer saw the same guy driving down the road. He pulled him over again. He saw the penguins were still in the truck, but they were wearing sunglasses this time. “I thought I told you to take these penguins to the zoo!”, the officer said. “I did,” the man replied. “And today I’m taking them to the beach.”

A climber fell off a cliff, and, as he tumbled down, he caught hold of a small branch. “Help! Is there anybody up there?” he shouted. A majestic voice boomed through the gorge: “I will help you, my son, but first you must have faith in me.” “Yes, yes, I trust you!”, cried the man. “Let go of the branch”, boomed the voice. There was a long pause, and the man shouted up again, “Is there anybody else up there?”

A United States Marine was deployed to Afghanistan. While he was there he received a “Dear John” letter from his girlfriend. In the letter she explained that she had slept with two guys while he had been gone and she wanted to break up with him. To add injury to the insult, she said she wanted back the picture of herself that she had given him. So the Marine did what any squared-away Marine would do. He went around to his buddies and collected all the unwanted photos of women he could find. In all, he got more than 25 pictures of various women (some with clothes and some without). He then mailed them to his now-former girlfriend with the following note: “I don’t remember which one you are. Please remove your picture and send the rest back.”

Early Spring Ride

It was the first day of Spring, March 20th in Central Iowa. I was finally loaded. The bike and some tools in the converted stock trailer (now my motorcycle hauler) clothes and other items on the back seat of the extended cab truck, and the road atlas at easy reach in the passenger seat. I was ready to start a trip like I had never done before, but had wanted to do for some time. I had originally planned on going in January, but as it turned out it was for the better, I was delayed.

My first stop was to see family in the St. Louis area and after two nights I continued towards Greenville, Mississippi. I chose this as the next stop because it was an easy drive and knowing what riding in Iowa along the Mighty Mississippi is like I thought it might be a similar experience. (But I did not consider it as being part of the Delta Region at the time.)

I had not made advanced hotel reservations for the trip just in case I had trouble along the way or something else came up. The hotel where I stayed the first night was the worst experience that I had ever had traveling. The next morning was a little cool but it was going to be a very good riding temperature by afternoon. I had checked out of the disastrous place and found another option for the night close by. It was a much nicer establishment at a better price, and they even let me check-in that morning.

Now it was time to go riding. I had discovered when looking at my atlas there was a town named Indianola about a half an hour east of where I was. I had to go and check it out. I discovered it was the home town of BB King. His museum is there and a park dedicated in his name. I didn’t take the time to tour the museum because there was more riding I wanted to get in. It was the first time I had ridden for the year and I wanted to see things around the Greenville area also, and since I had not planned on moving to a different hotel I didn’t have as much flex as I had originally figured.

I didn’t stay any longer in that area because there was a major storm heading that way and it was supposed to arrive on Friday, so I packed up and headed for Baton

Rouge, Louisiana. While in route I stopped in Vicksburg, Mississippi. It is a small town along the Mississippi River with a lot of history and many old buildings that have been revitalized. A Civil War Battle was fought there that is considered a decisive victory for the Union. Along the road on the north side of town there are many grave stones marking the places where soldiers lost their lives.

It was lunch time and I had talked to a local while fueling up and he suggested a place to eat named Rusty’s. The Mississippi River is just across the street from it along with the first diesel tow boat that is now part of a museum. I had a Shrimp Po’boy with onion rings and caramel pecan cheesecake for dessert. I suggest if you are in the area to stop there for good food and nice atmosphere. This town is a place I would consider returning to when I can spend more time.

I arrived in Baton Rouge and went straight to the Harley dealer. I wanted to verify the location, because the next day they were having their spring opener. I also wanted get information on local places to stay and eat in the city while I was there. No national chains, I wanted to eat local dishes. That Friday night the tornadoes rolled through Mississippi and caused extensive damage and killed some people not far from where I had been.

Saturday morning, I went by a place named Frank’s. Many cars were in the parking area so I decided to turn around and stop for breakfast. I had an alligator sausage omelet with hash browns and toast. It is interesting how some foods are called by the same name, but look different in other parts of the country. I asked my waitress for suggestions for places to ride in the area and I took her up on them. One was along the Mississippi River with very flat farm land and many good county roads.

Early Sunday morning it had rained and there were still chances of rain throughout the day. Since I was relatively close to New Orleans and I had never been there I wanted to make the trip. I am a fair-weather rider and don’t have rain gear so I usually don’t ride if it looks like it will rain. I considered taking the truck because it was also about eighty miles from the motel but thought I probably would not be able to see as much and parking could be an issue. I decided to take the chance and make the ride. I wanted to see Bourbon Street and after cruising the town for several hours I went down it twice. It is not very wide and there were hundreds of people walking around and music coming from the different establishments. It was a slow first gear only experience with some stopping and I am very glad I did it. I returned to the motel around dark a little damp but not wet.

On Monday the twenty-seventh I departed to Natchitoches, Louisiana based on a recommendation from a local guy I sat next to one morning while having breakfast at Frank’s. It is a historic river town in the northwest part of the state and has a very old cemetery that was established in 1737. It is not far from the eastern Texas border. It is a town I recommend visiting. It is the home of the meat pies which are a local favorite. You may even see a stuffed alligator and gar hanging from the ceiling in one of the businesses.

The weather was fantastic for the next few days and I could not wait to get going. I headed west and found myself crossing the Toledo Bend Reservoir and went into Newton, Texas. Texas seems to be very proud of its past, because there were several historical markers along the road in this area which listed the reasons those places were significant.

Wednesday the twentyninth was a day to move to a new area and I thought I was going to stay in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. When I arrived there for the night all the motels in town were full. I found a place about twenty-five miles east in Stuttgart, Arkansas. This area is known for its hunting and it is the first time I had to initial on a motel contract stating that I would not be cleaning any game in the room and it let me know the consequences if I did.

Thursday was another great weather day for riding. I unloaded the bike and was ready for the experience but had no idea what was to come. As I started the bike, I heard a grinding sound but it did start and then sounded normal. My first stop was for fuel. When I went to start it after fueling up, what I heard was not good. There was a pop and a zinging sound when the starter engaged. It sounded like it might have broken a tooth on the ring gear, or the starter, or both. I tried again but only heard the zinging sound. I tried rolling it ahead on the flat ground in gear with the clutch disengaged and then let it out when I had some momentum in hopes I could get the engine to move enough the starter would find another place to grab the ring gear or maybe start. After a couple attempts and no luck, a couple of truckers who were there watching me offered to give me a push. They did, it started, I thanked them, and I was off to somewhere knowing I had better not stall it or shut it off

A relatively short time later I came to another town that shared a name with a place close to home. This one was Carlisle, Arkansas. It was a railroad town back in the day. I wanted a picture of me and the bike with the old depot in the background, but I didn’t want to take the chance of the motorcycle dying, so, I stopped just long enough to snap a quick picture of the old depot with the town name on it for a souvenir. After one hundred and sixty-five miles and five hours, I had explored as much of the surrounding area as a tank of fuel would allow. I made it back without any other issues and after getting the bike loaded into the trailer it was ready for delivery to my local dealer for the repairs needed. I then had a comfortable feeling come over me. I knew that on this day I had a higher probability of being stranded along the side of the road with the bike, but I had made the day’s ride without further incident. My motorcycle riding on this trip was over, even though my scheduled return date was still a few days away…I was not going to go back early. I decided to disconnect the trailer and continue to explore and drift in this beautiful country that is full of wonderful things to see and do.

The next morning, I was on my way to Mountain Home, Arkansas. I was not far east of Little Rock when I received a text message warning me of a tornado in the area and to seek shelter. With very few options I kept pressing on while closely watching the sky. After arriving in Mountain Home and getting into my room I turned on the television and saw pictures of the destruction the tornado had caused in Little Rock. I was fortunate to have missed not just one, but two serious storms during my trip.

Mountain Home is a place I want to return to for riding. It has a lake, hills, and winding roads. There are good places to eat, comfortable amenities, and the weather was good for riding early in the year. It may be my next year destination before the Iowa riding season kicks off.

I arrived home after being gone for two weeks, a little over seventeen hundred miles on the truck and eight hundred twenty-nine miles on the bike and I still was not ready to stop exploring and drifting. I encourage you to do some adventuring, maybe even going a little or a lot out of your comfort zone. Ride, explore, drift, and experience life in some new ways. And always do what you can to stay safe.

I know it’s been brought up but it still doesn’t seem possible that the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa will be closing after the Labor Day Holiday. The reasons don’t need to be discussed and many have already heard and like everything else, just because WE know something it’s important to NOT overlook that others might not have the information that we have. The best way to find out is an old fashioned conversation. Not in a dickhead move “WHAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW THIS BIT OF INFO??? For SHAME.” But in a way you’d like to be talked to when you didn’t know a particular piece of information. Trust me; there are plenty of items that I don’t know about.

You might be wondering to yourself “This Crash guy seems pretty plugged in, been in media over 35 years, user of social media, he’s got to know a little about a lot” Nothing could be further from the truth because I am a legit cultural infidel and it’s not so much as a sense of pride, a badge of honor or the like, but just a fact of my life. I didn’t seek to be this unplugged, it just sort of happened. What do I mean about being a cultural infidel? Okay, it’s kind of a slope I guess. I just don’t care what goes on too much anymore. I don’t have the bandwidth to process what I should or should not be consuming perhaps. I have sheltered myself in order to maintain a better state of mind, I don’t watch cable news, I don’t even watch local news, and I haven’t read a local paper for years. Hell, I haven’t watched over the air TV (sans football) in so long I can’t even remember the channels. I

talk about this a lot but it’s really improved my life…learning that I don’t need to know everything that is going on in the world. Sorry, it’s not that I am unfeeling; it’s just that I am uncaring. I feel bad, but I just don’t care.

Recent conversations have led me to think I really need to tell as many of my rider peeps about the closing of the museum at the end of the summer. For a couple of reasons. I am a bit sad that it is going away, I took it for granted that it would always be there for me to make a trip, spend a few hours checking out the displays, seeing shit I have never seen, reminiscing about bikes I own, rode, or dreamed about over the path of my life. I just feel a weird connection to the place and it will be a void to me when it’s gone. But that is only one part of the pizza pie. I love the Harley’s, the Ducatis, Triumphs, Honda’s, Indian’s and more. The collection of memorabilia, old posts, advertisements, parts, accessories and the stories you can read. It takes me back to a much simpler time in my life when the riding was just easier to me or maybe I dreamed at the time that it was easier. Anamosa brings me back to that way of thinking,

Visiting the museum is the small part of the adventure but it does provide me an excuse to get over to Eastern Iowa. You see, I live on the West Coast of the state. Rather close to the Missouri River and while we have amazing roads, vistas, and great places to ride, there is something about riding Eastern Iowa that I have mentioned many times that just hits different, there is a welcoming feeling to riders by so many establishments and businesses that pulls me back so many times. Even the hotels around the area offer special bike parking only and complimentary towels to wipe down your ride in the morning. Oh, you will need to, like any roads in Iowa over the summer you will collect as many bugs as miles and to have a hotel offer help is so refreshing.

The riding around Stone City, the quarries, the Old Creamery, the river valleys and more with so many views and twisty roads inspire me to want to ride them more and that is not even mentioning my favorite Iowa road, the Old River

Don’t sit back next winter and regret not making that trip...

Road, I am a firm believer that every rider in the Hawkeye state must at least ride it once. Sure it’s cool to sneak across at Sabula, our Island town and slip down to Poopy’s for a burger in Savanna and pop back over. You will find riders from all over up and down that familiar path and loving it.

I recently learned a fun little tidbit of intel and this was completely by accident. Isn’t that how much of our learning that sticks really comes to us, by accident? I was messing with an AI program recently and it kicked out that for $2 American you can download a map at the Anamosa Convention and Visitors Bureau that gives you a map of 27 looped routes to navigate your journey around the area. TWO BUCKS I have done a lot dumber shit for two bucks I can promise you that.

I think I have told this story before, but one night over cocktails in our hotel room in Anamosa, my buddy who I will call Van Rock, since that is his nickname, wondered if there was a list of the top roadside attractions in the state of Iowa and how that would be a cool riding goal to see how many we could knock off

Well, there is, he found it in less than a minute and we knocked a huge chunk off that list already. Plow in the Oak Park, the Largest Frying pan, the river locks, The Grotto stuff like that. I can’t recall if the General Store Pub was on that list or not but if you pull up a list and it’s not, add it and go there when you hit that ride. ;

Located near the Wapsipinicon River the General Store Pub dates back to 1897 and was immortalized in a Grant Wood

painting, Not only is the ride there fun, it’s usually packed with bikers for a good reason, the food is out of this world good. A quaint, fun joint that you go to get away from it all and take it all in. Go there, trust me on this.

I am not sure how many bikers are going to ride out with me for my farewell to the museum, but I will not let that closing stop me from riding back out to Eastern Iowa in the future, the people, the roads, the sights, the foods and the memories are just too enjoyable to pass up.

Get your summer rides planned. Don’t sit back this winter with regret, we already have enough of that in our lives.
