A couple of things that are not made anymore and becoming rarer to see when out and about, Victory motorcycles and s steel frame bridges. Even though they don’t make either of them like this anymore, both are still incredibly cool in their own right. Sexy Makenna was gracious enough to make Eric’s 2017 Vegas and Brad’s 2015 Magnum look even better on a couple different rural Iowa bridges. Enjoy November, Have a great Thanksgiving, and also, celebrate out Veterans! GBA 2 - TRMI TRMI NOVEMBER NOV OVEM EMBE BER R 20 2023 23

Every damn week, hell, every damned day, there is something else coming at us. The Bill of Rights and the entirety of the 27 Amendments to the United States Constitution seem to be under attack. On top of all of that, freedoms not covered in the constitution are also at risk of being lost forever. We currently have the right and ability to ride our motorcycles, the kind of our choosing, but even that is at risk of being taken away.

never thought I would see the day where I could be taxed out of reality to ride a motorcycle, or drive my pickup. It sure as hell may be coming though. Can you imagine going to your local box store to buy a gallon of gas in a sealed container just to be able to ride your old bike around the block? We are not far off from that, sadly as it may seem.

Our ability to speak freely has been underr attack for quite some time. Although social media platforms censoring our speech is not covered under the Bill of Rights directly, I am pretty damned mnned mn eed d sure that the powers that be aree bback acck ack handedly trying to influence ppeople eo opplle and change outcomes of important taant nt events in our country. We have also as bikers been denied right to assemble right here in Iowa in the past few years, all under the guise of “safety” despite not one person being able to articulate the threat to cause the lack of ability to get together and buy and sell some parts. Our right to bear arms is even more under attack now,, and even more blatantly than normal, even en with an uber left administration. The current rent re nt people in charge at the capital are the bestt ggun unn sales people ever with their constant attacks k on our ability to protect ourselves. On the motorcycle and riding front, BMW recently announced in North America, the cessation of sales of all new and used internal combustion engine motorcycles. This stop of all sales though does not affect the sale of electric vehicles. In Europe, they are working to take away the exemption for destruction of end of life for motorcycles. Yup, that means that when your motorcycle ages out of what they define as usable, it goes away, gets destroyed. California is already pushing with many other states to follow the electric vehicle mandates in just a few short years. How long before European and Californian mandates are widely accepted? Our so-called leaders in the capital seem to gravitate toward the EU and left leaning states like CA and NY. This will not bode well for people that ride new and old motorcycles alike. On top of bans, restrictions, and companies simply no longer selling products that we want, how much are governments at different levels going to start taxing us to buy or use what have? California has been working on passing more and more taxes on weapons. When will that be the norm for gasoline? For engine oil? There has already been talk in this country about carbon taxes and charging us for the usage of internal combustion engines. I 4 - TRMI NOVEMBER 2023

TRMI NOVEMBER 2023 - 5

While I love to ride, I must confess I also love to read, with a particular penchant for history and historical novels. Some of my favorite time periods cover the Indian wars from Pontiac and Tecumseh on through what would be considered the Mountain Man era of the early 1800’s. Who, with any taste at all doesn’t like Jeremiah Johnson? Excluding my wife (even though her obvious good taste landed her such a fine figure of a husband), who says, “It’s too sad to watch and EVERYONE DIES!” The fact that the movie Jeremiah Johnson is based on the book Crow Killer - the account of a true person and the life of Liver-Eating Johnson - makes the story more appealing and real. My viewing of this 1972 classic again and again led to my eventual harvesting red pine logs and building my own cabin hideaway. A desire realized. “What does any of this have to do with today or bikers?” you are probably wondering. That is, unless you know me or have read previous articles where I’ve maybe shown a bit of a tendency to wander off and run amok. Has anyone else who has attended any of the bigger bike events like Sturgis, Laconia, Daytona, Bama Bike Week, Bikes Blues & BBQ etc.… been struck by the similarities of that westward expansion era and the biking community today? I believe much of that previous freedom- loving, adventuresome spirit still lives on in the various clubs and independent rider groups that you see at these events. Back then you had many different tribes but they all fiercely protected their areas, families, brothers and individual cultures. They lived free but had strict sets of rules pertaining to their individual tribes or clans. They knew and valued the importance of strength and aspired to being warriors that would not only protect but willingly sacrifice themselves. They would make alliances with other tribes for the good of the whole against common threats or enemies. Occasionally alliances shifted and territories changed through fortunes of war or a variety of influences. Sounds familiar. Like the tribes and mountain men of old, God has put desires and longings in the hearts of us all. The desire to live free, unfettered lives, for open space not over crowded or over regulated. Basically, of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. All of these and the desire to be a part of something bigger, a community of meaning, sometimes seem to be at odds with each other but are trying to achieve balance. We are quick to try all sorts of things and ways to scratch that itch and find lasting fulfillment. The reality is that the root of the longing is ultimately the desire to know and be known by God. The book of Haggai tells us, “Consider your ways. You have sown much, and harvested little, you eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill, you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.” All our striving to fix things in our own wisdom and strength is meaningless. The good news is that it doesn’t depend upon us overcoming obstacles but in trusting what Jesus did, not in what we can do. Not in our own works but in his blood and his work on the cross.

6 - TRMI NOVEMBER 2023

We all love a good story, all the more so when based in fact. Liver-Eating Johnson was a real man who defeated many foes and lived to a ripe old age, dying in 1900 in California and then being buried in Cody, Wyoming. Likewise, Jesus was a real man and God’s only son but he suffered death for us at an early age. He also defeated powerful enemies, the foe Death being the ultimate enemy. He then rose from the grave, not to California or Cody, but to the right hand of God where scripture says he intercedes for us. We should never forget that life in Christ is a gift and should give thanks for it. Our faith has to be in Jesus, not in religion. Through salvation we can be assured that he who began a good work will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Blessings, Mark Mark and Karla Cornick are with the Christian Motorcyclists Association. Find out more about CMA and God’s plan for you at www.cmausa.org.

Vernon and I set out for Omaha recently on a rainy September Saturday morning with the intention of attending the NEW and IMPROVED Harley Joe’s Invitational #4, and boy was it a good time. Hosted by Joe Nielsen and our photo contributor Mark Fountain, this was as one hell of a way to spend a rainy day. We arrived early, with two cool old bikes for the show, unloaded our bikes, and proceeded to look around at the early arrivals. The new location this year was great, and offered up plenty of room for the hhe participants. The show itself is free to attend, tend nd, which is pretty much unheard of these days, yyss, bu bbut ut iff you want to show off your ride, you gottaa have h ve aan ha n invitation. Besides the cool bikes and cars to look at, there were vendors, music, food trucks, and pin up models on site. The event is scheduled to last 5 hours, but could easily have gone on all afternoon. If you haven’t been to any of the last 4 Invitationals, you need to make time for #5 next year. If you want to work on earning an invitation to show off your own cool ride(s), feel free to share a pic and some info with Vernon or myself, and we would be happy to pass it along to Joe or Mark and maybe you can become a part of Harley Joe’s Invitational history. Another downfall of wind energy seems to be health related issues for humans and wildlife. There have been reports of an increasing number of whales washing up on shores and some advocacy groups are claiming that this is due to the construction and operation of offshore wind turbines. The news has been filled with articles about birds being hit by the spinning blades ever since the first one was completed. Other articles can be found claiming that cattle in the fields around the turbines have been affected. People living close to the turbines have reported various adverse effects; sleeplessness, headaches, ear pressure and tinnitus, just to name a few. Other complaints of noise, vibrations, and the shadow flicker from the spinning blades. Electric vehicles, or EV’s, are another part of the green movement that is growing in popularity. Many of their current owners speak nothing but praise, while others question their sanity when they decided to buy it. Once again we’re forced to look at the carbon footprint created in the manufacture of the vehicle and the massive battery required to operate it. Cobalt, manganese, lithium, graphite aluminum and nickel are used in the construction of most EV batteries. Every one of these are extracted from the ground in much the same manner as the iron, steel, and copper used in the construction of the EV and the wind turbine. The cobalt, manganese, copper, and lithium mines in foreign countries have a habit of using children for about 17% of the labor force. There are a ton of arguments for and against EV’s. The direct versus indirect emissions argument is a rabbit hole that would take several pages to discuss and I still haven’t completely wrapped my head around it, so I’ll leave that Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

His tenderloin arrived in all it’s golden crispy splendor, topped with a slice of Swiss cheese, grilled mushrooms, and onions, on a toasted bun. Fresh tomato, lettuce, onion, and pickle was on the side. The pasta salad was tender tri color rotini pasta with crisp peppers and onions in an Italian style dressing. It was delicious and refreshing paired with the tenderloin. I ordered Joe’s Patty Melt. It was a flavorful grilled beef patty topped with grilled onions, Swiss cheese, and 1000 Island dressing piled between two slices of grilled marble rye bread. I chose French fries as my side dish, and they were piping hot salty goodness. Crisp on the outside and fluffy potato on the inside.

European Commission: End-Of-Life Motorcycles Must Be Handed In

financing for mandatory end-of-life vehicles treatment operations and incentivize recyclers to improve quality.

The European Commission wants to make it mandatory to hand in motorcycles when they have come to ‘the end of their life’. FEMA’s Wim Taal explains.

Put a stop to vehicles going ‘missing’, through more inspections, interoperability of national vehicle registration systems, improved distinction of used vehicles from end-oflife vehicles and a ban on exporting used vehicles that aren’t roadworthy.

The European Commission (EC) has recently adopted a Proposal for a Regulation on circularity requirements for vehicle design and on management of end-of-life vehicles (end-of-life vehicle means a vehicle which is waste or vehicles that are irreparable). The inclusion of motorcycles in the Regulation could mean the end of so-called home recycling. Recycling of motorcycles and motorcycle parts is an inherent part of motorcycle use. Home recycling, where you end the bike’s registration and take it apart for re-use of its parts, is a significant part of the motorcycle culture. Home recycling helps to keep bikes on the road with used spare parts, instead of using new parts that have to be produced from raw materials.

Cover more vehicles, and gradually expand EU rules to include new categories such as motorcycles, lorries, and buses, ensuring a proper end of life treatment.’ Wim Taal, FEMA’s Communications Officer: “Virtually all motorcycle parts can be re-used, through a large network of specialized second-hand part suppliers or by users themselves who swap and change parts with other owners. Parts that are not re-used are recycled through local recycling schemes or sent on by second-hand part shops. There is no evidence of motorcycles being dumped beside the road or otherwise disposed of in an inappropriate manner.”

The Regulation aims ‘to cover all aspects of a vehicle from its design and placement on the market until its final treatment at the end-of-life:

Motorcycles are currently exempt from the-end-of-life directive (a position that was lobbied for by FEMA when the directive was written and adopted in the late 1990s). That will change if it’s up to the EC. The proposal obliges Improve circular design of vehicles to facilitate removal of vehicle owners to deliver their vehicles to an authorized materials, parts and components for re-use and recycling. treatment facility when it reaches the end-of-life stage and Ensure that at least 25% of plastic used to build a vehicle to present the subsequent certificate of destruction for the comes from recycling (of which 25% from recycled end-of- vehicle’s deregistration to the relevant registration authority. life vehicles. Recover more and better-quality raw materials, including CRMs, plastics, steel and aluminum.

If adopted, this Regulation will amend Regulations (EU)2018/858 and 2019/1020 and repeal Directives 2000/53/EC and 2005/64/EC (Regulations have binding Ensure that producers are made financially responsible legal force throughout every Member State and enter into for vehicles when they become waste, to ensure proper force on a set date in all the Member States. In FEMA’s view, the current Directive succeeded in The requirements regarding the collection of end-of-life preventing waste from vehicles, the re-use of parts vehicles, their mandatory delivery to authorized treatment from vehicles and improvement of the environmental facilities for treatment as well as their depollution should performance of all economic operators involved in the life apply to L-category vehicles (L3e-L7e). Manufacturers cycle of vehicles. The EC expects ‘lower prices for second-hand parts and components, meaning it will be cheaper to maintain and repair vehicles’ but does acknowledge that ‘the advanced requirements for end-of-life vehicle treatment may pose challenges for SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) in terms of higher short- and medium-term implementation costs and adaptation to new treatment technologies’, a possible development that was recognized in the study by Finnish FEMA member SMOTO. The SMOTO study shows that if motorized two-wheelers were covered by the directive/regulation, some of the operators specializing in their handling would have to close due to increased requirements and regulation of their activities. Most of the powered two-wheelers to be dismantled would be transported to operators who do not reuse dismantled parts efficiently, but mainly utilize them as metal waste. It would also be much more difficult to get the parts of enthusiasts. ‘We see the danger for smaller treatment facilities that currently sell used motorcycle parts; they can be overwhelmed by high implementation costs and adaptation to new treatment technologies.’ For manufacturers the proposal means they must declare in type-approval documentation the share of recycled content of indicated materials present in vehicles. It also obliges manufacturers to provide information on the safe removal and replacement of parts, components and materials contained in vehicles. This information must be accessible free of charge to waste management operators and repair and maintenance operators.

FEMA asked the European Commission to ensure that the possibility of controlled in-house demolition remains possible (as part of a circular economy), either by including it in the Directive, or by allowing Member States to make their own rules and regulations for in-house demolition. FEMA will re-emphasise its position in communication with the EC, since this is not addressed in the proposed Regulation. FEMA also asked the Commission to ensure that historic powered two-wheelers of value to collectors or intended for museums, kept in a proper and environmentally sound manner, either ready for use or stripped into parts, do not fall within the scope of this Directive. FEMA will reemphasize its position in communication with the EC, since this is not addressed in the proposed Regulation. Although FEMA supports the overall goals of the proposed Regulation, we do see the danger for smaller treatment facilities that currently sell used motorcycle parts; they can be overwhelmed by high implementation costs and adaptation to new treatment technologies. Written and Photo by Wim Taal

The European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM) states: ‘ACEM supports a comprehensive framework for the collection and treatment operations for L-category vehicles ensuring a positive contribution towards the Green Deal goals with several benefits for the society. However, further assessment of technical and economical specificities for various sub-categories should be considered to ensure a successful achievement of the ELV objectives and full alignment with other vehicles.’ In 2020 FEMA responded to the European Commission’s Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook
