As we are rolling into the month of July, the month of the celebration of our Independence here in the great ol’ US of A, and the heart of the riding season, I keep thinking about the word Freedom and what that means to me. Freedom to me means that we have the right and ability to do many things unencumbered in our day in and day out lives, and that we can choose how we live our lives. We can choose to openly live and grow within our own family units. We can choose whom to be friends with. We can choose whom we call brothers and sisters of the non-blood related folks in our lives. We can choose where we live freely without outside influences. We can choose how we live in our day-to-day lives if we are not doing anything harmful to other humans, animals, or our environment. We can choose to be affiliated with different groups or organizations without any negative consequences. We can choose what we like to drive and ride without being pushed into alternative options. We can choose how to spend our free time outside of work. We can choose to work in our chosen occupation if that is a sustainable way to take care of ourselves. We are free to use our money to advance as many personal or familial life goals as we want. We can choose our own speech freely without fear of Government intrusion or harassment. We can choose to worship however we see fit. We can choose to live our lives without being harassed for our beliefs, and without others forcing their lifestyles upon us. Being able to choose how to live without having to fill out applications for permits, licenses, waivers, and must pay exorbitant fees for every damn thing that we do.

Are all the aforementioned items true in the preceding paragraph? Actually, not very damned many are legitimate choices for us to make. We are becoming more and more

painfully chained every day. We must answer not only to our families and our creator, but more so we must answer to local, state, and federal level government every day. Want to get married, get a license. Want to get a dog, get a license. Want to drive a car or motorcycle, get a license. Want to become an electrician, get a license. Want to build a house, get a permit. Want to buy a gun, get a background check, or apply for a permit. Almost everything in our lives requires paperwork and approval, by a government entity, and of course…for a fee. The fees for everything are as outrageous as they have ever been, and only getting worse as well as the requirements for paperwork for doing about anything. Does not sound like a lot of freedom flowing here as of now.

How will any of this get any better? Sadly, in my opinion, it is going to take a country-wide shake up to make things any better. We have been at odds with one another in this country for quite some time. Almost like a civil war that has been utilizing divisiveness, propaganda, and misinformation to divide the country. I often wonder what will spark off internal battles right upon our soil. Or will it be an outside power that comes in to try to take us over as we are deeply divided? After 911 I can remember the immense amount of pride and cooperation of the country working together to heal after those tragic events. I remember seeing United States Flags everywhere, and for a significant period, no one gave a shit about party affiliation, gender, sexual preference, or much of anything other than taking out the one’s responsible for attacking us on our soil. Sadly, in the last couple of decades, that pride in the USA has gone downhill. Many people comment that they love this country but the leadership and the government say something different.

I know this is quite a departure from my regular musings in the Letter from the Editor page, but the thought of July 4th, Independence Day, and Freedom sort of drew this out of my soul. I hope that things can be fixed. I hope that we can again be united as one country.

Take care of your loved ones and ride as often as you can. Enjoy the FREEDOM that we have left before we lose any more.

The older I get I find that my inspirations become more diverse or maybe it’s just mind wander. Unfortunately, the good inspirations and thoughts are usually crowded out by useless or less than profitable ones. Kind of like a bad song, it’s not always the best ones that tend to stick in my brain. When it comes to articles, Mark Twain’s axiom of “Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow” has been my motto to live by. But the calendar is a harsh task master and the piper requires payment, so here I am at the computer, trying to meet Vernon, i.e. (The Piper’s) magazine article deadline.

Karla and I had an unexpected experience after the District 18 ABATE Memorial Ride last weekend that fortunately was not as exciting as it could have been. We had just returned home from 150 miles of beautiful riding and as she pulled her Heritage into the garage, we heard a loud pop. Of course, my first thought was What did she run into? and Do we have another replacement mirror? Sorry, my bad. No, she looks centered in the garage stall and what are those small shiny balls skittering across the cement floor? Note to self, those are ball bearings and they are hotter than biscuits. Don’t pick them up until they cool down. Thank God for his mercy in allowing us to get home and into the garage before her rear wheel shot craps instead of it happening while flying down the four-lane as we were minutes before. That was a disaster narrowly averted.

We prepare, we try to anticipate and be diligent in maintenance but stuff tends to happen. We just can’t foresee every scenario thrown our way. “Life is what happens while you are making other plans.” (John Lennon). John surely did not anticipate what would happen that fateful day in 1980 in front of the Dakota Apartments or he would have made sure he was somewhere else. Likewise, if we knew the bad things that would happen to us, we would do everything in our power to avoid them. It’s an impossibility and makes it all the more important to have our trust and right relationship in the Lord Jesus. Our walk of faith is for our whole life, not just a one-time event. It is trust that defies our lack of understanding or our confusion. I know that our tendency is to focus on the bad things that happen to us but I wonder how many things the Lord has protected us from that we don’t even have a clue about, like the tip of the ice berg. I’m sure we would be astounded. It is scary to contemplate. In this fallen, less-than-perfect world, accidents and disasters will happen. John 16:33 says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble but take heart! I have overcome the world”.

Those unfortunate incidents aside, we still have an innate ability to screw up, get hurt and hurt others. But like a master potter God doesn’t throw us away when we are marred or have imperfections. He has a way of reshaping and remaking us that strengthens us and eventually begins to show something that looks more and more like his son Jesus. Hopefully, others will be able to see the resemblance also. Wherever we are in life and whatever we’ve done or have had done to us we are never beyond his reach. He is able to remove any shame of thinking we are too marred or too defective and he never deserts us.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all

your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths”. We don’t always understand the twists and turns of life but being secure in his love and knowing there is a purpose for your life in him is peace-giving. The book of 2nd Corinthians tells us, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God”.

When you are in Jesus, he’s got this and he’s got us. Use your experience to help others.

Blessings, Mark

not so USELESS RAMBLINGS not so USELESS RAMBLINGS

Smith-Mundt Act

Somewhere in a past article I mentioned the SmithMutton Act of 1948 and now I have to issue a correction. The correct name is the Smith-Mundt Act. The official government name is The U.S. Information and Educational Exchange Act of 1948.

In 1948, following World War II, Representative Karl E. Mundt (South Dakota) and Senator H. Alexander Smith (New Jersey) introduced the Smith-Mundt bill in Congress. This act was passed on January 27, 1948 as The U.S. Information and Educational Exchange Act of 1948 (IEEA). Quoted from an article I read on this subject...

According to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the act established an information agency for the first time in a period of peace with a mission to “promote a better understanding of the United States in other countries, and to increase mutual understanding” between Americans and foreigners. The act recognized the importance of educational and cultural exchanges sponsored by the government and the need to build up a corps of well-informed intellectuals and opinion leaders in the political and social infrastructure. Among the provisions of the IEEA was the creation of an information service to disseminate information about the United State, its people, and policies abroad.

The history of our government should really make you question the statements above. “Sponsored by the government” and “opinion leaders” are two phrases that certainly catch my attention. There were many people that felt the same way when this bill was being written and considered. They believed that the information was propaganda, so they banned the domestic dissemination of such information.

This quote I found during my research speaks volumes… “Individuals lacking access to a plurality of free media are vulnerable to misinformation and propaganda and are potentially more likely to adopt anti-United States views.”

You have to remember that of the myriad media outlets that span the globe, there are only 6 major corporations (entities) that own them all. This is where Project Mockingbird comes into play. I am unsure if that is the official title, but it’s a phrase that will help you in any search engine. Take some time to check it out for yourself; it’s quite thought provoking… and disturbing.

The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) was formed in 1994 with the passing of the International Broadcasting Act. This established a board of 9 members, appointed by the president; all political appointees. The BBG was rebranded in 2018 as the U.S. Agency for Global Media and they claim to be an “independent agency of the United States government that broadcasts news and information.”

The USAGM supervises Voice of America, Office of Cuba Broadcasting, the state funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia, Middle East Broadcasting Networks, and the Open Technology Fund. As part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017, the USAGM now only has an “advisory role” and was replaced by a single appointed chief executive officer. One single person now runs it all. What could possibly go wrong in that situation?

H.R. 5736 (112th Congress): Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012 (SMMA) states that it is “to amend the United States Information and Educational Act of 1948 to authorize the domestic dissemination of information and material about the United States intended primarily for foreign audiences.” This basically means that any of the bullshit that the U.S. government would use to propagandize foreign countries could now be broadcast to the American citizen. However, the bill died in congress. It was introduced May 10, 2012, but did not receive a vote.

Although this bill was not enacted, its provisions could still become law by being included in another bill. It is common for legislative text to be introduced concurrently in multiple bills (called companion bills), re-introduced in subsequent sessions of Congress in new bills, or added to larger bills (sometimes called omnibus bills). You see where this is headed?

www.thunderroadsiowa.com 22 - TRMI JULY 2023 Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

Along comes the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2012 which was signed into law on July 2nd, 2013 under the leadership of Barack Obama. Arguments can be made that this act is fraught with many concerning issues for the continued freedoms of the American citizen, too many instances of government overreach. But with the signing the NDAA, that included the SMMA text, it is now completely legal for our government to release scripted and orchestrated propaganda, no matter how outrageous it might be, to the American public as factual news.

Politicians are now celebrity oligarchs, who use tax revenues to promote their personal pet projects and advance their personal investment portfolio. The political arena has become dominated with spectacle and theater. They pretend to care about the populace from whom all the money they squander is stolen from while they issue dire warnings about global warming, climate change, pandemics, Russian collusion and “stolen documents.”

Consider Nina Jankowicz, the self-styled “Mary Poppins of Disinformation” that the Biden administration previously selected to head up its Disinformation Governance Board (DGB). The DGB and Mary Poppins were both championed by Biden’s former press secretary, Jen Psaki… Lil Miss Circle-back Jen… who spent her entire tenure lying through her teeth. I will say, she was better at it than the current moron. The very fact that this current administration even considered a government agency to combat disinformation should cause anyone concern. The government deciding what is and is not disinformation FOR the American citizen? Telling you what you can and cannot see?

As Greta Thunberg would say, “How dare you?”

I’m sure we all remember the Russian Collusion claims against President Donald Trump, right? This story sparked a more than two year investigation by Robert Mueller that cost the American taxpayers more than $30 million dollars, thousands of hours of government agency time, and countless other wasted resources. This investigation was nothing more than propaganda because there was evidence that it was all a lie. A lie propagated by one party to destroy their opponent. The American taxpayer was lied to and robbed all for one party’s political gain.

The list of lies grows longer and longer every day. And the two-tiered justice system of the current administration is edging us closer and closer to being the next Chinese Communist Party.

Barrel Smoke BBQ

109 N. Main Street

Templeton, Iowa (712) 790-7625

Sunday and Monday: CLOSED

Tuesday - Thursday: 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Friday & Saturday: 4:00 PM - 11:00 PM

After a long day of riding, we decided to swing through Templeton and grab some barbeque before calling it quits for the day. We walked through the door of The Still/ Barrel Smoke BBQ, and to our surprise Vernon’s mom and dad were sitting talking to some friends. We pulled up chairs at a table, and Richard and Myrna joined us for a drink. We asked if they were planning on eating as well, so the four of us decided to make this WRTE a group effort.

I grabbed us some menus, and Richard and Myrna told us what they have enjoyed off the menu on previous visits. After a little indecisiveness and a lot of getting off track, Richard and I walked over to the ordering window to place orders for the table. We continued our visiting while we waited for our supper to be prepared. It didn’t take long, and we were covering the table with delicious smelling barbeque.

Richard ordered a half rack of ribs. The basket of perfectly tender ribs arrived nicely sauced and were the definition of smoked pork perfection. Easy to come off the bone, but not over-done, these ribs really hit the spot. Myrna Opted for the French dip sandwich this time, though she says that she has been known to order the brisket nachos, which are delicious as well. The sandwich was an artisan sausage roll piled high with tender smoked brisket and smoked provolone cheese served with a side of homemade au ju for dipping.

Since we had never been there before, Vernon and I opted for sampler platters so we could try as many options as possible. Each sampler comes with your choice of 3 meats and 2 sides. Vernon ordered the brisket, turkey, and smoked sausage. For his sides he got beans and potato salad. The turkey and brisket were juicy and tender; the sausage was smoky and had a nice snap when you bit into it. The beans were smoky with chunks of delicious bacon throughout and the potato salad was a cool, refreshing compliment to the rest of his meal. I also chose the sausage and brisket, but as my third meat I opted for the pulled pork. It was tender and flavorful, with just a slight hint of brown sugar as a back note…the perfect kind of pork to pile high on a bun. My sides were southern green beans and cheesy potatoes. The green beans had bacon and a hint of vinegar, just the way I like them. And the cheesy potatoes were creamy potato heaven, and really paired well with the pulled pork.

There are quite a few other options on the menu for sandwiches, wings, and even pork loin so I have a feeling we will be back to try some more. Besides, it is just down the street from the in-laws place, and it is always nice to sit and visit with them. Thanks for the delicious supper Barrel Smoke BBQ (and Rich and Myrna). So, next time you are in the Templeton area, be sure to swing by Barrel Smoke BBQ and The Still…grab a cold one, some good grub, and be sure to tell them Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa sent you!

There once was this guy who was going on a date to the movies with a beautiful girl. Before he went, he made the mistake of eating a jumbo can of beans. Right after he picked her up, he felt the need to fart, but he figured he could wait until they got to the movies. When they got there, he asked her if she wanted some popcorn and Coke. She said sure, so he went to the restroom. The line was long, so he went back to the lobby, got the food, and went back into the theatre. When the movie was over, he goes to the bathroom again, still with a tremendously long line. So, he figures he can wait until he drops her off. When they pull up into her driveway, she exclaims, ‘’Oh goodie. My grandparents are here. Come on in and meet them.’’ He agrees, although his A-hole is about to cry at this point. They go in and sit down at the table. Finally, he couldn’t hold it in any longer a tried to let it seep out a little at a time. As he squeezed out a toxic blast, he aimed it towards the family’s hound dog Duke, in hopes that they might blame the pooch for the horrendous fart. The girl’s father stands up and hollers ‘’Duke!!’’ and sits back down. ‘’Great!’’ he thought. ‘’They really think it’s the dog!’’ So, he starts bombarding the room with a couple, more powerful, louder stinkers. Once again, the girl’s father stands up, shouts ‘’Duke!!’’ and sits back down. Finally, he lets it all go and the loudest most hair-curling fart you’ve ever heard or smelt rippled through the dining room. The girl’s father stands up again. ‘’Duke, get the hell out from under him before he shits on you!!’’

What’s the difference between purple and pink? The grip.

An old grey beard biker dies and goes to hell. He is surprised when he is presented with a room full of beautiful women and kegs of beer. He asks a nearby demon, “Is this really hell? What’s so bad about this?” The demon replies, “Well the kegs all have holes in the bottom and the women don’t.”

A woman walks out of the shower, winks at her boyfriend, and says, “Honey, I shaved myself down there. Do you know what that means?” The boyfriend says, “Yeah, it means the drain is clogged again.”

The kids fi led into class Monday morning. They were all very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on salesmanship. Little Sally led off. “I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30” she said proudly, “my sales approach was to appeal to the customer’s civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success.” “Very good”, said the teacher. Little Debbie was next. “I sold magazines” she said, “I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events.” “Very good, Debbie”, said the teacher. Eventually, it was Little Johnny’s turn. The teacher held her breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher’s desk. “$2,467”, he said. “$2,467!” cried the teacher, “What in the world were you selling?” Toothbrushes”, said Little Johnny. “Toothbrushes”, echoed the teacher, “How could you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?” “I found the busiest corner in town,” said Little

Johnny, “I set up a Dip & Chip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample.” They all said the same thing, “Hey, this tastes like dog shit!” Then I would say, “It IS dog shit. Wanna buy a toothbrush? I used the President Biden method of giving you some crap, dressing it up so it looks good, telling you it’s free and then making you pay to get the bad taste out of your mouth.”

What does a robot do after a onenight stand? He nuts and bolts.

Why can’t Miss Piggy count to 70? Because every time she gets to 69 she gets a little frog stuck in her throat.

A guy traveling through a small town walks into the only bar. There’s one other patron in the entire place, already drunk. The drunk man stumbles over, wraps an arm around the traveler’s shoulder and begins to talk. “Did you see that fence on your way in? I built that fence. Do they call me Fence-Builder Johnson? No...” He downs a shot of whiskey. “Did you see that barn down the road? I built that barn. Do they call me Barn-Raiser Johnson? No...” He downs another shot of whiskey. “Did you see those storefronts on the main road in town? I built those. Do they call me Storefront Johnson? No...” He downs yet another shot of whiskey. “But you fuck ONE goat...”

A man is driving his five-year-old son to school for his first day. Suddenly the boy shouts out “Daddy! Daddy! Look at those moo cows in that field.” His father says “Hang on, you’re a big boy now, you must use adult names. It’s a cow, not a moo cow.” The boy is quiet for a while then suddenly shouts out “Daddy! Daddy! Look at those baa lambs in that field.” “I’ve told you” the father replies. “You’re a big boy now, you must use the adult names. It’s a lamb not a baa-lamb.” He drops the boy off at school and returns later to take him home. “How did your first day go, son?” he asked. “What did you do?” “We did some sums and we all read a story” he replied. “Oh” said his father. “What was the story called?” “Winnie the Shit!”

At school, a boy is told by a classmate that most adults are hiding at least one dark secret, and that this makes it very easy to blackmail them by saying, “I know the whole truth” even when you don’t know anything. The boy decides to go home and try it out. As he is greeted by his

mother at the front door he says, “I know the whole truth.” His mother quickly hands him $20 and says, “Just don’t tell your father.” Quite pleased, the boy waits for his father to get home from work, and greets him with, “I know the whole truth.” The father promptly hands him $40 and says, “Please don’t say a word to your mother.” Very pleased, the boy is on his way to school the next day, when he sees the mailman at his front door. The boy greets him by saying, “I know the whole truth.” The mailman drops the mail, opens his arms and says, “Then come give your FATHER a big hug.”

The submarine sandwich shop by my work had moved to a new location and was replaced with an adult sex shop. I didn’t realize it until one day I walked in and asked for a 12-inch salami on an Italian.

The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees was absent, but had not phoned in. Needing to have an urgent work problem resolved, he dialed the employee’s home phone number and was greeted by a child’s whisper, “Hello.” “Is your Mummy home?” he asked. “Yes,” whispered the small voice. “May I talk with her?” The child whispered, “No.” Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, “Is your Daddy there?” “Yes.” “May I talk with him?” Again the small voice whispered, “No.” Hoping there was someone with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, “Is anyone else there?” “Yes,” whispered the child, “a policeman.” Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee’s home, the boss asked, “May I speak with the policeman?” “No, he’s busy,” whispered the child. “Busy doing what?” “Talking to the ambulance men and the Fireman,” came the whispered answer. Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, “What is that noise?” “A helicopter,” answered the whispering voice. “What is going on there?” demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive. Again, whispering, the child answered, “The search team just landed a helicopter.” Alarmed, confused, and a little frustrated, the boss asked, “What are they searching for?” Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle...”Me!”

What do you call a guy who starts an adult entertainment business? An Entreporneur

Little Jimmy was visiting with his grandpa. They were both sitting in the living room and suddenly little Jimmy asked the grandpa: - ‘Grandpa, what is a c*nt?’ The grandpa was a little bit shocked with the question. He checked whether the grandma was in the kitchen and took little Jimmy up to the attic. There, he moved few of the old boxes out of the way and they saw a little coffer. He dusted the old coffer, opened it and very carefully took out one of the adult magazines. He opened it, more less in the middle, and said: - ‘Jimmy, do you see that star between this lady’s

legs?’ - ‘Yes’, said Jimmy - ‘Well, a c*nt is a person who put it there!’

A Saudi Prince wants to buy a bull, so he goes to see a famous Russian bovine breeder. The Russian tells him “I have many good animals. Here is Swedish bull, is born black color, but color turns white when grows.” “Over there is American bull. Color when born is red, but become dark brown when full grown.” “And here, Turkish bull. They is born dark brown, but grow up to be light brown color.” The prince says “I rather like the Turkish bulls. Fine specimens indeed.” “Excellent choice, your majesty. But Turkish bull is special. They is bred for royalty, like you. But if you have royal blood, you must be bonding with bull calf when young, before they change color or they will reject you,” the Russian explains. “Well,” the prince says, “I’m looking for a strong, adult bull. I’m not particularly interested in buying a calf. I rather like this big, beige bull over here.” The prince attempts to pet the large Turkish bull. It sniffs his hand, shakes its head in disgust, turns around and kicks the prince with its hind legs. The prince goes flying across the room and lands in a pile of hay. “Where did you get such a horrible beast?! Why did it kick me!?” He sputters. “I told you. He from Turkey,” the Russian explains, “Is tan bull, can’t stand a noble.”

A guy walks into a bar and orders a beer. “Just bought a new car, I named her Sally,” he tells the bartender. “You’re an adult now, you really shouldn’t anthropomorphize things,” the bartender says. “Why not?” the guys asks. “Because they don’t like it,” the bartender replies.

A prudish mother visits her adult daughter. Her daughter was living in an apartment with a young man, and she did not approve of her living situation. The daughter picked up the mother from the airport, and brought her home. The mother carefully looked around the house. Two bedrooms, one clearly the daughter’s, and one clearly belonging to the young man. The daughter made a fancy dinner for her mother, and both she and her roommate tried their best to show that they are just two adults that lived together, no more. The young man was charming and polite, and the daughter went the extra mile to make her mother happy and comfortable. When the weekend was over, the daughter dropp ed the mother back at the airport. The next day, the daughter called the mother to make sure she had made it home. “Also, Mom, I’m not saying you took it, but I can’t find the fancy serving spoon I used for dinner. Do you know where it is?” The mom said “Well, I’m not saying you’re sleeping with your roommate, but if you slept in your own bed you’d have found that spoon already.”

A husband and a wife over their marriage had eight kids. One day the husband notices that their sixth kid, Billy, looks very different from the other seven. The husband goes to his wife and asks her, “Honey, I noticed that Billy looks different from the other children, did you have an affair?” The wife starts to break down into tears and nods her head. The husband, heartbroken, quietly asks his wife, “So who is Billy’s father?” “You.”

Let Those Who Ride Decide – State #33 06/03/2023 6:00 AM

|

On June 1st, Nebraska governor Jim Pillen signed into law a motorcycle helmet modification bill, which allows riders to choose if they wear a helmet. Congratulations to the motorcyclists in Nebraska, ABATE of Nebraska and all the groups in Nebraska who for years fought to have helmet choice in the Cornhusker State.

Nebraska State Senator Ben Hansen originally introduced the language, which was included in a larger transportation bill that passed the legislature at the end of May. Effective January 1, 2024, an individual age 21 and older, who has completed a certified motorcycle safety course may now choose whether or not to wear a helmet, provided the rider uses protective eye equipment.

In 2020, Missouri passed a helmet choice bill leaving Nebraska as the sole state in the Midwest that required all riders to wear a helmet. With this new law, Nebraska now joins its neighboring states and becomes the 33rd state allowing helmet choice.

For 34 years riders in Nebraska have sought the freedom to decide whether to wear a helmet. This victory is a testament to the handiwork, determination and passion of all those involved. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has long championed the belief that “those who ride should decide.”

When hearing the news, MRF President, Kirk “Hardtail” Willard said, “Grass roots activism at its finest, it is encouraging to see that there are still politicians and bureaucrats in this great country of ours that bend to common sense and the will of the people. Given the nanny state of our society today, it is an outstanding achievement by ABATE of Nebraska and other involved motorcyclists in earning their freedom of choice.”

This message from “Rouge,” State Coordinator for ABATE of Nebraska, Todd C. Miller should inspire us all. “It is hard to explain what this bill means to me. I was mentored and encouraged by so many. I am turning 60 and had the privilege to ride in this state prior to the mandatory helmet law enacted in 1989. Over the years, I have lost many friends, colleagues, brothers and freedom fighters who were on the frontlines of this fight. It is hard to encourage a group of young riders that have never ridden free in Nebraska, for us, that was anyone under the age of 50! So, in honor of all of those we have lost, I am very proud to say

the next generation of riders will know what it means to ride free in this state. I pray they make memories, enjoy the ride here in Nebraska and become emboldened with the same desire I, and so many others, had to defend our rights in the years to come. We all know the fight is NOT over.

I would like to Honor my Board of Directors/State Officers both past and present for sticking with the plan… and making it happen. My legislative officers over the years who helped keep us focused and get us there one step at a time, including Charles Thomas, Scott Lucey, Gary Neeman and my current Legislative Representative Randy Geer. Last and certainly not least, my wife and State Membership Secretary, Sheri Miller for all the late nights, weekends, and continued support.

My list of outstanding contributors also includes Rick Backer, Jimmy Wray, Jodi Wessel, and Duane ‘Drano’ Goff, all of whom are no longer with us …”

Congratulations Nebraska! Ride Safe and Ride Free!

This law does not go into effect until the dead of winter this coming January 1st, 2024. So, the remainder of the 2023 riding season for Nebraskans, it is business as usual in respect to wearing helmets. There are some other important items that must be considered when planning any travel through the state of Nebraska on motorcycles and/ or trikes. The law applies to those riders that are over 21 years of age. Anyone younger must still have a helmet on while riding. Another requirement is that riders must wear eye protection while riding. Current information is that riders and passengers must have completed and have proof of a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Safety Course. This requirement has been stated to be in effect for all riders, not just Nebraska residents, so out of state travelers will need to have proof of training with them to avoid citation. It has also been noted that it will become a secondary offense, meaning that it is not supposed to be the sole reason for law enforcement to initiate a traffic stop, that a primary offense has had to have been witnessed, such as speeding or running a signal or sign, then they can inquire about requirements for riding without a helmet. This was just signed by Nebraska governor recently, so we are sure there will be more information coming about out of state riders traveling through on in the state of Nebraska. We will try to share information as it becomes available.

Freedom RINGS, and it REVS...

Freedom time is here and it is important that the biker community celebrates and embraces the freedom that we get over the summer months and support the very ideas that we hold dear to our hearts, the types of freedoms that tug at our very souls. The sense of freedom that tingles the tiny hairs on your body when you let that clutch out for the first time, the first sunset you chase, the first breath taking view you found or the first exhilaration that shocked your wrists as you ran through the gears, blowing past the telephone poles, the fields, farms, and vistas. Ramping up to cruising speed, your left toe in perfect synch with your clutch hand, giving it zero thought as instincts take over while you clear your head.

Motorcycles have always been associated with freedom. There is something incredibly liberating about hitting the open road on two wheels, feeling the wind rushing past you and drinking in the beauty of the world around you. And for those who ride motorcycles, July is a particularly special time of year. This month brings with it an annual celebration of motorcycle culture…an opportunity to come together as a community to embrace the joys of riding.

For those who love to ride, there is really nothing quite like the experience of touring small towns on a motorcycle. There is a sense of adventure that comes with exploring the lesser-known corners of America, and doing so on a motorcycle adds an extra layer of excitement to the experience. You never quite know what is around the next bend, and that makes every ride feel like a mini adventure. This might be my favorite thing about riding in Iowa. Of course, there is an amazing and supportive biker culture across the Hawkeye State, I have written about it many times in this world class publication. So many small towns

economic engine is fueled by the riding community, they welcome us with open arms, cold beer, and great food. Few things I like more than finding a new “joint” I have never been to and being treated like family and making new friends while riding. Well, finding a new road with tons of curves, great views, and decent pavement rank up there rather well too.

Our freedoms (of course) are not free and we must be diligent in protecting what we care about and with riding it’s no different. Hard to believe, but not everyone shares the same views when it comes to the riding experience. There are some who believe that helmets should be mandatory for all motorcyclists, while others argue that wearing a helmet should be a personal choice. Those who support the idea of no helmet laws argue that wearing a helmet can actually be more dangerous in certain situations. For example, if a rider is forced to make a quick evasive maneuver, a helmet can limit their vision and make it more difficult for them to avoid an accident.

There are also those who believe that no helmet laws are an essential part of preserving the freedom of the riding experience. For many riders, being able to feel the wind rushing through their hair as they speed down the highway is an essential part of the experience. It is a symbol of freedom and independence, a reminder that we should be able to make our own choices when it comes to our well-being. Choice is the very cornerstone of what we need to protect. Thankfully there has been a groundswell of support and other states are now giving riders the chance to make their OWN personal choice.

I am not, nor will I go down the path about motorcycles being risky or the pursuit of our passion being any more dangerous than about anything else. Look, everything is going to kill you. Nothing is 100% safe and guess what, I think that is a good thing. There should always be a bit of a risk in no matter what you do, because that just makes the reward that much sweeter.

You can sport of lid if you want to, nobody is stopping

www.thunderroadsiowa.com 32 - TRMI JULY 2023 Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

you, I will support you, but at the same time I am going to continue to support the rights and freedoms not to do the same nor will I force anyone else to comply. Not super big in the entire “compliance” gig, super not my jam.

But allow me to close with this.

We are already running out of summer and the riding season

will be a memory sooner rather than later and that means you have no excuse NOT to get out and enjoy the freedom of the road.

There is something about the riding experience that simply can’t be replicated in any other way. It’s a chance to connect with the world around us in a way that feels intimate and real, to experience life in a way that feels wholly authentic…

hidden reaches of the countryside, and charming small towns. Motorcycles may be an inherently risky endeavor, but the rewards can be worth it tenfold, as long as riders take all the necessary precautions. So, this summer it’s time to grab your bike, head out on the open road, and experience the freedom that comes with riding. And, as always, stay safe out there.

How many times have we talked about sitting down over the cold weather months when the bike is under a blanket, the battery is on a tender, and all you have might be some photos on your phone of past summer rides? I don’t have access to the Thunder Roads Iowa research team to check for sure, but I know it’s a lot, I mean a shit load of times for sure and myself…guilty. I too have dealt with the regret of not riding enough, slowing down enough to enjoy a ride, or going out of my way to try a new joint in a small town. Actually, that last part is never true, I am always up for that adventure, but hopefully you get the point.

Get your ass in the saddle and embrace the freedom of not only the weather but the open road, at least while we still have a chance to enjoy it.
