Through this publication, from the Bértiz´s Tourist Consortium, we would like to offer the visitor a useful and complete guide of all the activities available in our region: interesting places to visit, a network of walking paths and hiking tracks, the festive and cultural calendar, as well as a guide of services and other general information that might be of interest to the visitor. The Bertiz´s Tourist consortium was founded in 1992 with the objective of promoting tourism development in the towns and valleys of Zugarramurdi and Urdazubi, Baztan, Bertizarana, Malerreka and Bortziriak. At present, Urdazubi, Zugarramurdi, Baztan, Bertizarana, Ituren, Zubieta, Oitz, Urrotz, Donamaria, Beintza-Labaien, Sunbilla, Igantzi, Arantza and Etxalar´s town councils and the professional associations of Touristic farmhouses, Campsites, Hotels, Restaurants, Bars, Service Companies and Craftsmen are the participants in the committee. It is worth mentioning that all the establishments associated with the Tourism consortium have an identity plaque with the logo of the Consortium as a quality guarantee. This valley have been inhabited since thousands years ago and as testify are the big number of megalithic monuments of their peaks. It has passed along the History with a marked personality that make it known around all the world. Into their specifys, the University status and the universal nobleman granted to all the inhabitants from the valley in the XVth century have been the most relevants and betwen them they have proliferate intellectuals, countables, businessmen, militarys, ecclesiastical charges, and after them prospered indianos. Passing zone, since the age of Saint James way and with prosper comerce, it gather the french influence, basque culture and navarre´s character...and selfish. Cette vallée à ètait habitée depuis millier années, comme témoingnent le grand nombre de monumets megalithiques de ses sommets. Il à passé dans l´Histoire avec un personalité très marquée qui le fait conu dans toute le monde. Entre ses spécifies, le status d´Université et la noblesse universella donnée à toutes les habitants dans le XV siècle, entre lesquels ont proliféré intellectuels, comptables, entrepreneurs, militers, charges ecclésiastiques et plus tard prospères indiens. Zone de passage, depuis les temps du Chemin de Saint Jaques et du comerce prospère, recueille l´influence française, culture basque et caractère navarrais…et propre. The valley have one General committee with medium age origin that arranged the big communal and make up one only town hall with 15 charming towns or “places”. La vallée à une Conseil General d´origine médiéval qui ordonne l´étendue communal et constitue une unique mairie avec 15 charmant villages ou “lieus”.

“ITXUSI ROCKS” NATURE RESERVE
Spectacular beech and oak forests. The most relevant animal in this area is the tawny vulture.
“IRUBETAKASKOA” NATURE RESERVE
This peak of 955m. altitude, is known like Alkaxuri too and there is a natural alder forest very strange for this area.
Z.E.C. ALDUIDE MOUNTAIN
Alduide mountain is declared like Special Conservation Area (ZEC), because it is the biggest beech forest of Navarre. It is known like “Quinto Real” too, that is a historic place name of the middle age.
L.I.C. BELATE
Belate is declared like Communal Importance Place (L.I.C.) into de Natura 2000 net, because of having some strange natural habitats where we can stand out the “turberas” and threatened fauna and flora species. They are some signposted paths to know the natural and cultural values like the Roman road, the Santa Maria of Belate chapel and the ancient pilgrim guesthouse of the Saint James Way of Urdax- Baztan.
HARRIKULUNKA
It is a big stone, situated at 955 m. hight, in the Argibel mountain. This stone is in balance on other smaller stone and jumping on it we can see its swing. One legend tell us that Roldan throw this stone from the Auza mountain ( 1.306 m ).
HELL´S MILL
This ancient mill is surrounded by a big forest, almost in suspension between two hillsides and where a waterfall fall unther it, forming a very beautiful scenery.
RÈSERVE NATURELLE “IRUBETAKASKOA” Cette cime de 955m. est aussi conue comme Alkaxuri et il y a une alisier très rare dans cette région.
Z.E.C. MONTAGNE D´ALDUDE (QUINTO REAL) La montagne d´Aldude c´est déclarée comme Zone de Spécial Conservation (ZEC), parce que c´est le plus grand forêt d´hayes à Navarre. C´est aussi connue comme “Quinto Real”, un toponyme du Moyen âge.
L.I.C. BELATE Belate c´est déclarée comme Lieu d´Importance Communautaire (LIC), dans le réseau Natura 2000, pour avoir quelques habitat naturelles rares, dans lesquelles on peut remarquer les “turberas” et quelques spèces de faune et flore menacées. Il y a quelques randonées signalisées pour conaître les valeurs culturelles et naturelles comme la chaussée Romaine, l´ermitage se Santa Maria de Belate, et l´ancien auberge des pélerins du Chemin de Saint Jaques d´Urdax-Baztan.
HARRIKULUNKA C´est une grande pierre, située à 955m. d´atitude, dans la montagne d´Argibel. Cette pierre est en équilibre sur une autre plus petite et si on saute sur la pierre, on peut voir sa basculation. Une légende raconte que Roldan avait lancée cette pierre de la montagne Auza (1.306m.).
LE CHÂTEAU D´AMAIUR Le château d´Amaiur c´etait le derniere endroit pour la défense du Royaume de Navarre à 1522. Aujourd´hui, on peut observer les vestiges du château et le monolithe construite au XX. Siecle, pour faire honneur a tous les personnes qui avait tombées dans la guerre.
MOULIN DE L´ENFER Cet ancien moulin c´est entourée par un grand fôret, presque suspendu entre deux versants et dessus d´une cas55 5
cade, qui forment un environnement spectaculaire.

The Amaiur´s castle was one of the last defense place of the Kingdom of Navarre in the age of 1522. Today, we can see the remains of the castle and the monolith built at first of the XX century, for all that falled down in the war.

Situated at the Puriosenea house, in Braulio Iriarte street of Elizondo, disposes of one etnographic colle tion with a recreation of one carpenter workshop and a typical baztan´s home, agricultural elements, traditional plays, folklore and economy elements, always keeping the traditional structure. XORROXIN’S CASCADE
The Xorroxin´s cascade is situated to 2,5km. From the village of Erratzu and the only way to arrive is walking along a marked path. Is the place where the Baztan river have his source and in the route they take the name Bidasoa.

CASCADE DE XORROXIN Spectaculaire cascade située à 2,5km. du village d´Erratzu à laquelle on arrive à pied par un sentier marqué. C´est l´endroit de la source de la rivière Baztan, qui après, dans son parcours, change son nom par Bidasoa.

URDAZUBI/URDAX The caves of Ikaburua They are located in the Leorlas neighbourhood of Urdazubi and they date from between 20.000-30.000 years before Christ and we must highlight too the formations of stalactites and stalagmites. At a constant temperature of 14º and accompany of the river Urtxuma, the legend said that they are used to be the gathering point of the lamias, mythological creatures similar to nymphs. SAINT SAVIOR MONASTERY It was the only monastery that the "premonstratense" order founded in the Kingdom of Navarra and it was founded with the ecclesiastical influence that proclaimed the
austerity. The cloister is of the end of the XVII. century and they offer one exposition of basque art and the first floor is adapted like one area for the interpretation of the history of the monastery, since their origins like pelerins hospital and revising all the history and life of Urdax. +info: 0034.948.599.031
URDAZUBI/URDAX Grottes de Ikaburua Elles sont situées dans le quartier de Leorlas de Urdazubi. Leur origine se remonte à entre 20.000 et 30.000 ans avant JC Avec une temperature constante de 14 degrés, on remarque les formations de stalactites et de stalagmites à travers lesquelles passe le ruisseau Urtxuma. MONASTÈRE DE SAINT SAVEUR Il est le seul monastère que l´ordre de Prémontré a fondé dans le Royaume de Navarre. Il fut fondé sous le principe d’austérité que préconisaient les courants religieux de l´époque. Le cloître est de la fin du XVII siècle et il nous offre une exposition d´art basque. Le premier étage est une zone d´interprétation de l´histoire du monastère dès son origine comme hôpital de pèlerins presentant la vie à Urdax. +info: 0034.948.599.031 8

ZUGARRAMURDI Cave of the witches
ZUGARRAMURDI Grottes des sorciéres
Consists in a great natural tunnel (120 meters wide in the biggest part of the main gallery), and a stream going through it on the outskirts of the town. This cave is very famous because Witches used to celebrate their Sabbaths in it. At 2.610, 40 people were made prisoners and taken to a court charged with practising witch-craft. Nowadays there is an explanatory historical and biological tour of about 2 km.
Il s’agit d’un grand tunnel naturel (120m. de largeur dans la partie la plus ouverte), traversé par un ruisseau (« de l’enfer ») à l’extérieur du village. La renommé de ces grottes est due à la présence des Sorcières et aux Akelarre (réunions nocturnes de sorcières) que l’on y célébrait. Une quarantaine de voisins furent accusés de sorcellerie au jugement de l’inquisition en 1.610. Actuellement on peut suivre un parcours interprétatif, tant historique que biologique d’à peu près 2 km.

MUSÉE DES SORCIÈRES Situé à l’ancien hôpital, le musée réunit les histories des sorcières de Zugarramurdi jusqu’au jugement inquisitorial de Logroño, au XVIème siècle. Avec l’aide de la technologie la plus avancée, il offre un point de vue différent de la sorcellerie.

Situated in Oieregi, the Natural Parc, also declared C.I.P. (Communal interesting place), have one expansion of 2.040 hectars and we can differentiate the historic garden (4 hectars) with the exotic species of all around the world and the native wood.
Situé dans la commune de Oieregi, le Parc Naturel aussi décláré L.I.C.(Lieu d´importance communitaire), a une surface de 2040 hectares où l’on se différencient d’un côté le jardin historique de 4 hectares avec des espèces exotiques de tout lemonde, et d’autre côté la fôret autochtone.
Inside of the area of the garden they are a sensory route, adapted for handicapped, one little hold back, the Baztan´s river viewpoint, one chapel, the palace with exhibitions, the natural parc´s model and the nature interpretation centre with the audiovisual about the natural parc. Posibility of guided visits for groups.
Dans l’aire du jardin il y a un parcours sensoriel adapté aux handicapés et aussi un petit bassin, le belvédère de la rivière Baztan, une petite chapelle, le palais avec des expositions, la maquette du parc et le centre d’interpretation de la nature avec un audiovisuel sur le Parc Naturel. Option des visites guidées pour des groupes.
In the area of the wood they are some routes betwen 1km. And 22 km. to enjoy wolking the wood of native species, and one of them is adapted for the birdvatc ing. Here, we can find the palace of Aizkolegi, one limemaking and one coalmaking places too.
Dans l’aire de la forêt il y a plusieurs parcours d’entre 1 km. et 22 km. pour pouvoir profiter sur le terrain de la forêt des espèces autochtones, entre lesquels il y en a un pour l’observation des oiseaux. Il y a aussi le Palais de Aizkolegi, un tour à chaux et une charbonnière.

DONAMARIA Jauregia tower house Guided visits to see this typical tower of mountain lineage dating from the XVth Century. It is built in masonry, and still keeps the scaffols or wooden boarding in ets upper part. It is covered by a hip roof.
There are two marked paths that indicate the interesting spots: a sculpture of the Grass Frog, the wood pyre, fields and sheepfolds.

OITZ This town is on the left bank of the river Ameztia, which runs under a Medieval bridge. The parish is dedicated to San Tiburcio and a parish cross carved in 1.600 is the most important element of its furniture. They preserve the square for the traditional play of “laxoa” (pelota with gloves). +info: www.oitz.org
URROTZ and BEINTZA LABAIEN Urrotz and Beintza Labaien own the lands of the “Leurtza Reservoirs” recreational Natural Area.
LEURTZA RESERVOIRS Two small reservoirs in the middle of a magnificent beech wood stand out in this Recreatinal Natural Area. The beauty of this natural spot makes it an ideal place for recreation and leisure activities. The grass frog is the most interesting animal among the varied fauna of this area.
SUNBILLA This town is interesting because of its weallth of monuments, wich date mainly from the XVIIth century. The town is divided into two neighbourhoods connec ed to each other by a stone bridge with several spans. There are one bronze sculpture of the mythical axecuter Latasa. As regards gastronomy, the local pastry rolls are very popular.

LES BARRAGES DE LEURTZA
Visites guidées pour voir l’intérieur de cette tour ty-pique de lignage de la région du XVème siècle. Bâtie en pierre de taille, conserve le échafaud ou structure en bois à la partie supérieure et elle est couvert d’un toit à quatre eaux.
Aire Naturelle de Loisirs où ressortent deux petits barrages au milieu d’une magnifique forêt d’ hêtres. La beauté de cet endroit natural le fait devenir un espace idéal pour la détente et la récréation. Entre la faune variée qui habite ces contrées on trouve notamment la grenouille vermeille. Il y a deux sentiers balisés, où les point d’intérêt sont indiqués : sculpture de la grenouille vermeille, place du four à chaux, prairies et cabannes de brebiss…

OITZ Ce village se trouve à la rive gauche du ruisseau Ameztia, sur lequel se dresse un vieux point du moyen âge. Le patron de la parroise est Saint Tiburce et entre son mobilier il est remarquable la croix travaillée en 1.600. URROTZ et BEINTZA LABAIEN Urrotz et Beintza Labaien partagent la propriété des terrains de l’Aire Naturelle de Loisirs « Barrages de Leurtza ».

SUNBILLA Village d’intérêt grâce à son patrimoine avec notamment des bâtiments du XVIIème siècle. Divisé en deux quartiers unis par un élégant pont de pierre. Il y une sculpture en bronze en honneur du mythique aizkolari Latasa. Quant à la gastronomie, il faut remarquer les populaires canutillos.

SAN JUAN XAR NATURE RESERVE It is located between the towns of Igantzi and Arantza. It is rich in hornbeams, ashes, oaks, limes and hazels. The reserve includes he chapel of Saint Juan Bautista, the inside of which is a cave containing an image of Saint Juan Xar. According to popular belief the water that flos from this spot has healing powers.

ETXALAR
It holds the National Tourism Award for the Beautification and Improvement of Spanish Towns. The most relevant elements are the Church of La Asunción with funerary stelas, the four stone bridges with one span and the chapel of Santa Cruz. MEGALITHS OF ZENTINELA
Circular walking route that visits different megaliths, prehistoric shepherd buildings (dolmen, cromlech, menhir or túmulo) in the mountain Zentinela.

ARANTZA Rest and leisure area At the entrance of the town there is a picnic area with beautiful viewes, children ´s play area, toilet, ancient washing place and parking. Inside the town there are a pelota court and three restaurants.
Situated a 8 km. from the village, near the route that converge Etxalar and Sara, is a place where a group of people, called “palomeros”, keeps a traditional pigeon hunting with nets, betwen the 1 of october and the 20 of november. It is a method of the XIV century that they don´t need firearms for hunt. Guided visits throughout the saison. Declared like B.I.C. RESERVE NATURELLE DE SAN JUAN XAR Entre les communes de Igantzi et Arantza se situe cette réserve naturelle riche en carpes, frênes, chênes, tilleul et noisetiers. Enclavée dans la réserve se trouve la chapelle de Saint Jean Baptiste, dont l’intérieur est une grotte naturelle qui contient une images de Saint Jean Xar. La croyance populaire attribue à l’eau qui coule de ce point des pouvoirs curatifs.

MEGALITHES DE ZENTINELA Sentier circulaire visitant divers mégalithes, constructions préhistoriques pastorales (dolmen, cromlech, menhir ou tumulus) du mont Zentinela.
PALOMBIÈRES Placées à 8 km. du village, sur la route qui unit Etxalar et Sare, ce sont un endroit où un groupe de palombiers tiennent la traditionnelle chasse de palombes avec des filets, entre le premier octubre el le 20 novembre. Il s’agit d’un système du XIVème siècle où on n’emploie pas d’armes. Visites guidées pendant la saison. Déclarée comme B.I.C. GASTRONOMY gastronomie Into the Baztan-Bidasoa region, the abundant rainfalls from the atlantic climate, the vast fields and their farming and ranching organization, guarantee first quality products. So, the local gastronomy is binded to beef, lamb and pork plates (chops, ham, chistorra, loin, bacon…) and vegetable garden´s products too, like leeks, beans, pods, lettuces, tomatoes, peppers and potatoes. Milky products are very deeply-rooted too: We can enhance the “lacha” sheep cheese, with a producer from Bertizarana who had win the gold medal of a competition of all the pyrenees and other excellents cheeses from some villages of the region. Other milkyes like the
curd or the rice with milk are present in the desserts. However, the most popular plates are the “xuri ta beltx” (lamb´s intestine´s stew), the “Baztan-zopa” (lamb´s fat an bread soupe that we eat with fork), the salmon, the trout and products derived from the ducks. In autum, the fungus, the chestnuts and the hunting plates, enrich the local gastronomy, like the pigeon, wild boar or “becada”`s plates. To taste these delicious plates, they are a big offer of restaurants around all the region and in all them we can check the quality and variety of the local gastronomy.
Dans la région de Baztan-Bidasoa, les abondantes précipitations du climat atlantique, les prés étendus et le travail agricole et des éleveurs de bestiaux, garantissent des produits de première qualité. Ainsi, la gastronomie de la région est attachée aux plats de viande de veau, d´agneau et de porc (côtelettes, jambon, chistorra, échine, lard…) et aussi aux produits du jardin, comme poireaux, haricots, laitues, tomates, piments et pommes de terre. Les produits laitiers sont aussi très appréciés: le plus remarqué est le fromage de brebis de race “latxa”, un producteur de Bertizarana ayant obtenu la médaille d´or du concours de toutes les Pyrénées. A plusieurs villages de la région il y a aussi d’autres excellents fromages. Le lait caillé et le riz au lait sont aussi très présents aux desserts. De toute façon, les plats les plus typiques sont le “xuri ta beltx” (ragoût avec des tripes d´agneau), le “Baztan-zopa” (soupe de graisse d´agneau et du pain qui se mange avec fourchette), le saumon, la truite et les dérivées du canard. Pendant la saison d´automne, les champignons, les marrons et les plats de chasse, enrichissent la gastronomie locale, comme les plats de pigeons, sangliers ou boursiers. Pour déguster ces délicieux plats, il y a une grande offre de restaurants dans toute la région et tous vérifient la qualité et variété de la gastronomie locale. 15

Baztan-Bidasoa is an excellent lace to enjoy nature and landscape. All the walkings goes through different and inte-resting areas from a natural, landscape, cultural and architectural point of view. Some of them can also be considered as theme routes. To know better our region, many mountain routes and paths have been prepared and marked to allow visitors. There are three kinds of routes:

S.L. - MINOR ROAD Of about two or three hours, 3-8 km. long and without difficulty. Trainers can bi used when the weather is good. There are 11 routes altohether, marked with white and green marks. Some routes ar thematic (cultural, naturalistic…). 22
P.R. - PETITE RANDONNÉE Journée entière ou demi journée; entre 8-15 km de long et difficulté moyenne. Chaussures de montagne et sac à dos conseillés. Au total 13 parcours, signalisés avec des marques blanches et jaunes.
S.L. - CHEMIN URBAIN 2 à 3 heures de route, 3-8 km de long et sans aucune difficulté. Par beau temps, on peut utiliser de chaussures de sport. Au total 11 parcours, signalisés avec des marques blanches et vertes. Certains parcours sont thématiques (culture, nature).

THE GREEN ROUTE OF THE BIDASOA-EUROVELO voie verte de la bidassoa - eurovelo THE GREEN ROUTE OF THE BIDASOA-EUROVELO The Green Route of the Bidasoa is an important touristic resource from the Baztan-Bidasoa region that is administred by the Bertiz Touristic Consortium. It has 52 kms long, from Behobia (Bordering neighborhood from Irun) until Elizondo (Baztan valley), passing by the towns of Lesaka, Igantzi, Sunbilla, Doneztebe, Legasa, Narbarte, Oieregi and Baztan. In this moment, 41 kms are passable, from Behobia until the Bertiz Natural Parc. There are mountain bike renting services and logements near the green route of the Bidasoa.
In our case, the Government of Navarre finance the project jointly and is the crux of the agreement between the Consortium and the Government derived from the Strategic plan for the development of tourist products of Bertiz.
INFORMATION OF THE PHASES
Phase Behobia-Endarlatsa-Alkaiaga The Behobia-Bera phase (Alkaiaga neighborhood from Lesaka) is passable. It has 9-10 kms between Behobia and Endarlatsa and from Endarlatsa until the Alkaiaga neighborhood (Lesaka) they are 5 kms. Attention: second tunnel without light. We recommend bring a lantern or pass it walking. Phase Lesaka (Alkaiaga) - Lesaka (Hotel Bereau´s bridge) Passable phase. 3 kms approximately. Phase Lesaka (Hotel Bereau´s bridge) - Igantzi (Berrizaun) Passable phase. Gas works finished, waiting for improvements by the Government of Navarre.4 kms approximately. Phase Igantzi (Berrizaun) – Sunbilla This phase is in bad state but is passable. Gas works finished. 12 kms approximately. In the tunnel of Sunbilla is recommended to bring a lantern and pass it walking. It was repaired provisionally for the mountain bike ride in september 2010, and in 2011 it will be improved, but while they do it, it is reccomended to pass it with precaution. In the Sunbilla´s phase, it is necessary to respect the animals and neighbor´s cars that lives in the houses near the Green Route.
EUROVELO PROJECT The eurovelo are an European network of cycling routes that make up a big European project: The EuroVelo project. Twelve big routes cross the continent from the north to the south, passing into the main cities ant touristic areas. EuroVelo is an ancient project of the European Cyclist Federation (ECF), institution which includes 52 assosiations from all Europe and it represents more than 400.000 cyclists. These big routes are being reality, piece by piece in each country.
Phase Sunbilla – Legasa The pahase of Sunbilla-Doneztebe is in good conditions. 3,5 kms approximately. In Legasa one phase is cemented that improves the passage. From Doneztebe until Legasa: 3,5 kms approximatelly. NOTE: During the 2011, it will be doing the improvement works in the Green Route of Bidasoa and this information will change during this year.
The Bertiz Touristic Consortium, with the “Conseil Général des Pyrénées Atlantiques” and Bidasoa Activa and the councils of Ghétary, San Juan de Luz, Hendaya, Hondarribia and Irun have presented the projecto to equip the eurovelo nº1, from Ghétary until Doneztebe, because the tracing planned by the driving of the eurovelos pass by the route of our project of Green route of the Bidasoa. INFORMATION PAR TRONÇONS
La voie verte de la Bidasoa est une importante ressource touristique de la région du Baztan-Bidasoa (nord de la Navarre) gérée par le Consorcio Touristique de Bertiz. Elle a une longueur de 52 km., dès Behobia (quartier de la frontière à Irun) à Elizondo (vallée du Baztan), en traversant les comunes de Lesaka, Igantzi, Sunbilla, Doneztebe, Legasa, Narbarte, Oieregi et Baztan. En ce moment 41 km sont praticables, dès Behobia jusqu’au Parc Naturel Señorío de Bertiz. Tout au long de la voie verte de la Bidassoa il y a des services de location de vélos, et des hebergeurs placés sur la voie.
Tronçon Behobia-Endarlatsa-Alkaiaga Le tronçon Behobia-Bera (quartier Alkaiaga de Lesaka) est praticable. kms:entre 9 et 10 kms dès Behobia jusqu’à Endarlatsa. Dès Endarlatsa jusqu’au quartier de Alkaiaga (Lesaka), 5 kms. Atenttion: seconde tunnel sans illumination. Conseillé frontal ou traverser à pied.
PROJET EUROVELO
Tronçon Lesaka (pont hôtel Bereau) - Igantzi (Berrizaun) Tronçon praticable. Une fois finis les travaux du gazoduc, il ne manque que l’intervention d’améliorement de la part du Gouvernement de Navarre. 4 kms.environ. Tronçon Igantzi (Berrizaun) – Sunbilla Tronçon en mauvais état, mais praticable. Travaux du gazoduc finis.12 kms environ. Au tunnel de Sunbilla il est conseillé de porter un frontal ou une lampe et il est préférible le traverser à pied. Il a été amélioré de manière provisoire lors de la marche btt de septembre 2010 et en 2011 il va être aménagé, mais pendant ce temps il est conseillé de le traverser avec attention. Dans la partie de Sunbilla il faut respecter le passage de bétail et de véhicles des voisins qui habitent aux fermes voisines dont l’accès est par la Voie Verte.
Les eurovelos sont un réseau de pistes cyclables qui consitituent un gran projet européen: le projet Eurovelo. Douce grands itineraires qui traverseront le continent d’un bout à l’autre, en passant par les principales villes et zones touristiques. Eurovelo est un ancien projet de la Fédération de Cyclistes européens (ECF), entité qui regroupe 52 associations de toute l’Europe et qui représente plus de 400.000 cyclistes. Ces 12 grands itinéraires sont en train de se matérialiser section à section à chaque pays. Le Consorcio Touristique de Bertiz, avec le Conseil Général des Pyrénées Atlantiques et Bidasoa Activa et les mairies de Ghétary, Saint Jean de Luz, Hendaye, Fontarrabie e Irun ont présenté le projet d’aménagement de l’eurovélo nº1, entre Ghétary et Doneztebe-Santesteban, puisque le tracé établi par les promoteurs des eurovelos passe sur le tracé de notre projet de voie verte de la Bidasoa. A l’égard du Consorcio, c’est le Gouvernement de Navarre qui cofinance, en cohérence avec le caractère central de cet élément dans la convention entre le Consorcio et le Gouvernement qui découle du Plan Stratégique de Développement de Produits Touristiques de Bertiz.

In the first stretch the landscape is open, ridge after ridge, and there are beautiful views of the coast. In Gorospil pass (the outstanding milestone of the region), the route runs very close to the stream. Here we can see the pelota court of Aritzakun valley, the old school and the old Roman mines (“The corner of the mines”). The laste stretch is very steep. The end of the route goes along ridges and asphalt roads. Par la valleé d’Aritzakun. La première partie offre un paysage ouvert, de crête en crête, avec de magnifiques vues de la côte. Au col de Gorospil (à voir la pierre marquant la limite de la région), le chemin s’enfonce dans le creux de la rivière. There are paths, tracks, asphalt and cement roads. The paved stretches of the Road to Santiago are outstanding (Urrasun-Amaiur-Arizkun). We will see many chapels: San Frantzisko in Apaio, Santiago in Urrasun and San Miguel in Bozate. The route can be made shorter in Urrasun if we take the GR-65 “Road to Santiago” to Arizkun. We climb the steep path to Belun pass (500m) through a beech wood (there we can visit “harrikulunka” a big swaying rock). The views are wonderful. From Bederitz pass we go to Urruska house (rural guesthouse) and through the ridge we arrive at Basabar. From Irlintzi pass we go to Beartzun(we can also get to Elizondo if we go along the ridge). Taking the road next to Aratxuri stream we return to Bealate. NA-1 “ABARTAN” Ziga-Elorregiko lepoa -Berroeta-Aniz-Ziga A trek around the Basaburua region. We go up the steep path to Elorregi pass, crossing old oak woods and sheepfolds. In Elorregi pass, on the side of Abartan mountain, we will see prehistoric remains (a dolmen and a menhir). We can enjoy the magnificent views of Baztan and clim Abartan mountain. Taking a wide path we go down to Berroeta through beech woods and fields. From there we go around Zigara through the GR-65 Road to antiago, going past the town of Aniz. Parcours par la région de Basaburua. Montée à forte pente au col d’Elorregi, traversant des chênaies centenaires et des bergeries. Au col d’Elorregi, sur le flanc du mont Abartan, des vestiges préhistoriques (dolmen et menhir). Vues splendides sur la vallée de Baztan et possibilité de monter au mont Abartan. Descente sur Berroeta à travers des hêtraies et des prairies, sur un chemin large. MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES parcours á BTT The region of Baztan-Bidasoa offers one privileged natural environment for fonds of the bicycle touring and the mountain bike. There are rides for all type of levels, where we can enjoy of singular places like the ancient railway of Bidasoa. These routes runs through marked walking paths and little routes with very few traffic, between forests that changes their colour in each season, protected natural areas, hills, rivers and for the most experienced there are some routes to go to the top of the mountains to see spectacular viewes… Baztan-Bidasoa offre un environnement naturel privilégié aux amants du cyclotourisme et la VTT. Il y a des parcours de tout type de difficulté, où on peut profiter d´endroits aussi singuliers comme l´ancienne voie du train de la Bidasoa. If you are going to be cycling alone, tell the staff at the welcome centre which route you are going to follow. 6. Before you set off, make sure that your bike is in proper working order, check the weather forecast and find out as much as you can about the route. 7. Don’t forget to take some water, a repair kit and your mobile phone. 8. Respect fencing and close gates behind you. 9. Respect the environment, the towns or villages you cycle through and any animals you come across. 10. Enjoy nature, without noise or haste.
