WHO INTERNSHIP & CANCER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) INTERNSHIPS 2018 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

•

WHO is the directing and coordinating authority on international health within the United Nations system. WHO has 194 Member States and more than 7000 people working in 150 country offices, in 6 regional offices and at headquarter in Geneva. WHO offers internships globally in our country and regional offices, as well as at headquarters.

The WHO internship programme has three objectives: (a) to provide a framework for assigning students from diverse academic backgrounds to WHO programmes, where educational experience can be enhanced through practical work assignments; (b) to expose students to the work of WHO and (c) to provide WHO programmes with the assistance of students specializing in various fields. Most students are placed in health-related programmes, although placements in other areas of work like for example communication, external relations, finance or human resources are also possible.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES Under the supervision of a technical expert in the respective area, interns are assigned a project based on agreed terms of references and in line with their skills set. These terms of references typically include some or all of the following responsibilities: • • • • • • •

Please note that internships at WHO are very competitive and only a small number of applicants will be accepted every year. Only successful candidates will be contacted.

WHO Internships are not paid. Living abroad is expensive and finding accommodation can be challenging. All intern candidates should be aware of these factors before they consider applying for a WHO Internship.

Interns are not eligible for appointment to any position in WHO for a period of three months following the end of the internship.

If selected for a WHO Internship, you will be required to provide certified copies of proof of enrolment in a course of studies and a medical certificate of fitness for work.

IARC Fellowships for Cancer Research Postdoctoral Fellowships for Training in Cancer Research applications are invited from interested and eligible candidates. Cancer Research Postdoctoral Fellowships announcement has been made. Check out all of the details on the same below.

The application process for training fellowships in 2019-2020 is currently open. Early career scientists wanting to complete their training in those aspects of cancer research linked to the Agency’s mission are encouraged to apply. Disciplines covered are epidemiology (all disciplines included), biostatistics, bioinformatics, and areas associated with mechanisms of carcinogenesis such as cell and molecular biology, molecular genetics, epigenetics, and molecular pathology. Interdisciplinary projects are encouraged.

Fellowships are tenable at IARC in Lyon, France working in a research Group. Applicants are eligible from any low-and middle-income country since IARC is very keen to promote the development of experience in cancer research in these countries by training postdoctoral researchers that can return to apply their new skills and expertise. The Fellowship is for a period of two years, the second year is subject to satisfactory evaluation.

Candidates need to have obtained their doctoral degree in the 5 years prior to the start date of their Fellowship. Candidates in the final year of the PhD studies are eligible to apply but must have been awarded their degree by the time of starting their Fellowship (30 November 2019 at the latest). The working languages at IARC are French and English. Candidates should be

proficient in English at a level sufficient for scientific communication. Candidates currently at IARC as fully-funded postdoctoral scientists, or applicants that have worked at the Agency as a postdoctoral scientist for a period greater than 6 months, cannot be considered. Candidates have to contact the host Group of their choice at IARC before applying in order to interact closely to establish a proposed programme of mutual interest. The yearly stipend with dependant allowance is competitive compared to other global fellowship schemes. The cost of travelling for the Fellow, and in certain circumstances for dependants, will be met, and health insurance covered.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is an autonomous organization set up by the Government of India to advise and assist the Ministry of Human Resource Development at the center, and Education Departments of States/Union Territories in formulation and implementation of their policies and major programmes in the field of education, particularly for qualitative improvement of school education. The major constituent units of the NCERT are: (1) National Institute of Education (NIE), New Delhi, (2) Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET), New Delhi, (3) Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE), Bhopal, (4) Regional Institute of Education (RIE), Ajmer, (5) Regional Institute of Education, Bhopal, (6) Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar, (7) Regional Institute of Education, Mysore, and (8) North-East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE), Shillong. Among several activities, the NCERT and its constituent units undertake, aid, promote and coordinate research in areas related to school education.

The NCERT has brought out National Curriculum Framework 2005 (NCF-2005), which has enabled a fresh discourse and new ideas on education in India. With a focus on the child, NCF-2005 stresses the need for a perspective on how children learn and environments to enable this process within larger concerns of equality and justice in a democratic society. The document further emphasizes the understanding of curricular and pedagogic practices, and social and cultural factors that influence and mediate these processes in diverse contexts. There is a need to develop a body of knowledge that enhances our understanding of the concerns expressed in NCF-2005.

Towards this end, the NCERT intends to offer fellowships, named as NCERT Doctoral Fellowships, for conducting research at the doctoral level.

Objectives of the Scheme: (a) To provide opportunities to young scholars to research the field of education from different disciplinary perspectives. (b) To build the knowledge base of education in the contemporary context.

Scope of the Scheme: The NCERT Doctoral Fellowships are intended to enable young scholars to pursue doctoral research in education and other related disciplines. Doctoral Fellows can

pursue their work in a recognized university/research institution of their choice.

The NCERT encourages original thinking in conceptualization of the problem and use of innovative methodology in conduct of the research related to school education.

Priority Areas: Fellowship will be given for research pertaining to the following priority areas: Teacher Educators’ Education: Quality of pre-service and in-service teacher education programs, challenges and opportunities in teacher training, Review and Revision of curriculum/syllabi, assessment process of pre-service training, possible changes in practices teaching, models of teacher training, deterioration in training process. Internship issues related to teacher education, qualitative improvement in teachers and teacher educators, issues related to admission and recruitment of teacher educators.

Education of the Disadvantaged: Disadvantages of different kinds because of belonging to scheduled castes/scheduled tribes and backward castes, and minority communities, and due to gender, disability, and living in difficult circumstances.

Classroom Processes and Practices: Multi-grade teaching, over-crowded classrooms, medium of instruction, languages used in the class, teaching-learning process, teacher concerns, evaluation practices, disciplinary techniques, and space and time management.

Curricular Areas: Teaching of Science, Mathematics, Language, Social Sciences, Arts and Crafts, Work and Vocational Education, Environmental Sciences, and Health and Physical Education.

Education for Peace: Conflict and its resolution in different spheres, problem of violence, respect for cultural diversity, values for living in harmony with people and nature, child rights, and sustainable development.

Psycho-social Development of Children:

Development of self, relationships and social skills, understanding and cognitive skills, communications skills, leadership, decision-making and copying with stress.

Any Burning Issue in School Education This will be judged on the basis of concept note/synopsis submitted by the candidate with their application. The candidate should clearly state how does the proposed research relates to above priority areas.

Eligibility: • • •

Good Academic record with at least 60% marks at both Graduate and Post Graduate Levels.

Candidates should not be more than 35 years of age as on the last date of receipt of applications.

Candidates registered for PhD degree in a recognized university/ or working toward their PhD registration are eligible to apply.

Other conditions: 1. Four out of 10 fellowships are reserved for 4 Regional Institutes of Education (RIEs) one each for Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar and Mysore. However, if no candidate from RIEs is found suitable, the fellowship will be offered to other suitable candidates.

2. The fellowships will be limited to extremely deserving candidates only. If suitable candidates are not available, Council may not select all 10 Fellows.

3. Candidate applying for Doctoral Fellowship should have either completed predoctoral research methodology course or enrolled/selected for such course for appropriate duration as approved by UGC. The fellowship will start after completion of the course and confirmed registration with the University for Ph.D. work.

4. Each Doctoral Fellow will be required to present a seminar at the end of each semester.

5. The NCERT Doctoral Fellow will be

required to contribute to the RIE teaching programme, field research and/ or the curriculum development and textbook development programmes of NCERT for 30 days in a year. The Fellow will be provided III AC fare for the travel, and accommodation in the RIE hostel.

6. The Doctoral Fellow will be under obligation to present public lecture on larger issues of public interest relevant to his/her doctoral research work, if so invited. The seminar may be held at RIEs or NCERT headquarter and the fellows will be given the III AC fare for travel for the same.

7. The candidate will submit with their applications, the CV of the research supervisor which should clearly indicate the research work done by them in the last five years. NCERT reserves the right to advise the candidate to chose a new research supervisor if needed. The candidate may select a supervisor/research guide approved by NCERT. The fellowship of the last three months and contingency of the third year will be released only after receipt of the thesis.

Selection Procedure: The procedure for short listing of applicants will be designed by NCERT. Shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for an interview, which may also include presentation of the proposals. Candidates will be paid second (sleeper) class train fare by the shortest route for attending the interview-cum-seminar.

Reservation of Seats: The statutory provisions for reservation of seats will be applicable to the candidates belonging to different categories.

Fellowship Amount: NCERT Doctoral Fellows will receive a

fellowship of Rs.23,000/- per month (for Non-NET) and Rs.25,000/- per month (in case of NET qualified candidates) for a maximum period of three years from the date of permanent Ph.D. registration and/or date of selection in NCERT. They will also receive a contingency grant of Rs.10,000/- per annum during this period. The fellowship will commence from the date of joining by the candidate after furnishing the documents of permanent Ph.D. registration in NCERT and will terminate at the end of three years from the date of joining or with the submission of the doctoral thesis whichever is earlier.

Disbursement of Fellowship: The NCERT will credit the monthly fellowship to the savings bank account of the Fellow. For this, each Fellow will be required to submit a ‘Certificate of Attendance and Satisfactory Work Performance’ to NCERT on a quarterly basis. Release of the monthly fellowship from second quarter onwards will be subject to receipt of the said certifi-

cate. Annual contingency grant to the extent of actual expenditure incurred but not more than Rs.10,000/- per annum will be credited to the account of the Fellow after receipt and scrutiny of the bills/vouchers submitted by the fellow duly signed and countersigned by the supervisor and Head of the Department.

Monitoring of Work: Doctoral Fellows will be required to submit six monthly progress reports duly forwarded by their supervisors/Head of the Department and Research Advisors to NCERT. A Committee of Experts will review the progress.

Also a research colloquium will be held annually where Fellows will present the progress of their research. If the progress of the research is found unsatisfactory, NCERT reserves the right to terminate the fellowship at any point of time.

Junior Research Fellowship will be applicable. Further, NCERT Doctoral Fellows will not accept any other remunerative assignment during the period of fellowship.

Publication of the Thesis: After the award of Ph.D. degree, the Doctoral Fellows will be required to submit a Hard bound copy of the thesis (along with a CD) to NCERT. NCERT will consider publication of the completed research in an appropriate form. The Fellow can apply for permission to publish his/her work elsewhere.

Application Procedure: Application should be filled in the prescribed format available on the NCERT website (www.ncert.nic.in). Completed application forms should be accompanied by a concept paper of about 1500 words on the theme of the proposed research, which should contain statements about (a) rationale and objectives of the study, (b) conceptual

framework, (c) proposed methodology, and (d) potential contribution of the study. WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE? Now I am sure you must be on Google searching What is the meaning of going ballistic?

Ballistic is all about intercontinental ballistic missiles, so those are trajectories or path taken up by missile under gravity after the internal propulsion has seized.

But in the metaphorical sense when we use go ballistic it means becoming aggressive and committing to the cause of preparation for the exam, abandoning the option itself to abort.

And somewhere the energy starts going down. We start believing that 20 days are not enough for revising for the exam, we will need more time!

These connectors will help the team get real time pollution exposure stats which will be uploaded to the central data server for further analysis.

As per AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria, these wearable detectors will be handed over to kids for a week and later can be given for a longer duration. In Dr. Madan words, this initiative will help the team study the varying effects of indoor & outdoor pollution on different being. The Board will call for research proposals through advertisement, circular to the institutions or through Board’s website.

Interested applicants may submit the proposal through proper channel in the prescribed format (Annexure – I) which will be made available in the Board’s website http://www.karnataka. gov.in/kbb. Two hard copies of the proposal must reach the Board on or before 30th November 2018. Also, a soft copy of the proposal should be mailed to kbb-ka@nic.in.

The funding amount required needs to be reflected in the proposal.

The shortlisted candidates will be invited for presentation of the proposal before the Technical Expert Committee (TEC) of the Board and the selected projects will be intimated to the Principal Investigator.

Upon acceptation of the proposal, the concerned institution will have to execute an MoU with the Board for implementation of the Project.

The project will become operative with effect from the date of signing of MoU. The date of receipt of the Cheque/Demand Draft will be intimated by the Principal Investigator to the Board.

The sanctioned budget of the project shall be released in the following order: a) 1st Installment /Initiation Advance –50% of the total cost will be released within ten days after signing the Agreement as initiation advance. b) 2nd Installment – 40% of the total cost will be released after 12 Months from date of signing MoU and after submitting the First progress project report in two hard copies and soft copy along with Utilization Certificate. The progress report will be subjected to review. c) 3rd & Final Installment – The final report (draft report) along with UC for the previous instalment must be submitted two months prior to the due date which will be subjected to review

by Technical Expert Committee. Upon acceptation of the final report (draft report), 5 hard copies of the approved Final Report, including Executive Summary, in Kannada and English has to be submitted along with soft copies. The remaining 10% of the total cost will be released after submission of final report to the satisfaction of the Board All accounts in respect of the project will be subject to audit by the institution’s auditors.

The progress of the project will be closely monitored by the Board and the recommendation of the Board must be considered for incorporation accordingly.

If Principal Investigator (including Co-Principal Investigator) leaves the institute, it is the responsibility of the institution to entrust the work to another equally qualified Investigator by the Head of the Institution with information of the Board, at no additional cost.

The engagement of contractual/technical/skilled manpower may be made as per the institutional guidelines.

Any presentation of the research outcome in the form of research paper or presentation in the seminar may be done on due acknowledgement of the Board.

In the event, after due enquiry, if the Board decides that the progress of a research Project is highly unsatisfactory and cannot be improved, it may terminate the Project.

Upon such termination, full audited accounts and refund of all unspent balances will have to be made promptly to the Board within six months from the date of termination.

Any equipment purchased under the project has to be handed over to the institution and list of such equipment has to be sent to the Board.

There is no provision for International travel.

If the need arises, Peer reviewers may also be invited for scrutiny of reports whose comments will also bear equal importance and weightage.

Project is deemed as completed only after the acceptance of the final report by the Board.

All correspondence is to be addressed to the Member Secretary, Karnataka Biodiversity Board.

Karnataka Biodiversity Board must be cited and acknowledged in all report/ publications/journals.

The Principal Investigator of Project must abide by provisions of Biological Diversity Act 2002 & Karnataka Biological Diversity Rules, 2005 and other related legislation.

Dissemination of research findings: Unless restricted, wide dissemination of research findings would be encouraged. Apart from professional journals/books, final technical reports of completed projects may be disseminated through one or more of the following channels, as appropriate: • •
