Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, is a premier institute dedicated to the intense multi-disciplinary research supporting the ambitious nuclear energy program of India. BARC is enabling young, gifted and motivated students to contribute to path-breaking discoveries in frontier regions of scientific research and cutting-edge technology by providing Junior Research Fellowships in the areas of Physical, Chemical and Biological Sciences.

Applications are invited from interested students for the award of Junior Research Fellowships at this Centre.

Each of the selected candidates will register for PhD at Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI a deemed to be University of Department of Atomic Energy).

1. AREAS OF RESEARCH PROJECTS IN SCIENCE DISCIPLINES Life Sciences Mutation breeding and plant biotechnology, Cancer Biology: basics and drug development, bacterial stress biology and heavy metal bioremediation, Food Technology (Microbiology, preservation and packaging), Structural Biology of proteins, Cancer diagnostics and Immunology, TB diagnostics/treatment.

The Centre also promotes high-quality interdisciplinary research in areas applicable to the Programs.

2. AGE LIMIT: The candidate should be an Indian national. The candidate ought to be less than 28 years of age as on the last date for receipt of application.

Age relaxation is applicable up to

3 years in the event of Other Backward Class applicants, 5 years in case of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe applicants and 10 years in the event of persons with disabilities applicants.

6. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS i. Prior to applying, the candidate must make sure that he/ she meets all of the eligibility conditions mentioned in the advertisement. The chosen candidates will be initially taken as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) and will be paid a stipend of 31,000/- a month. The fellowship will be provided initially for a period of 2 years. Continuation of this fellowship is subject to satisfactory review and performance at the conclusion of every year. On satisfactory performance, the tenure of Fellowship will be further extended and updated to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) in the third year onwards with a stipend of 35000/- per month (consolidated). The total period of the fellowship will in no case exceed five years. They’re eligible for contingency grant including book allowance of 32000/per year.

So while the students have lots of options in Part B to choose from questions on agricultural biotech, medical biotech, pharma-bio tech, neuroscience, they do have a restriction in Part A to answer 50 mandatory questions. Preparation strategy for this exam is to look at the previous year questions and answer keys published on DBT and BCIL website and also following the prescribed curriculum /syllabus which has recently been designed exclusively for BET. C SIR: One benefit which CSIR e xam has is that the top students c learing JRF are awarded a special f ellowship called the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Grant. This fellowship stipend amount is Rs.29000/- + HRA per month during the first two years o f the fellowship and a Contingency grant of Rs.70000/- per annum. It may be raised to Rs.34000/- + HRA per month from third year onwards on the basis of assessment through interview. This also has a condition, that if performance is not found satisfactory, it may be reverted to JRF (NET).

One advantage of the DBT JRF fellowship is that it is directly disbursed t o the students, whereas normally other fellowships are disbursed to the institutes, where the students are pursuing their Ph.D. Very recently, DBT had implemented direct benefit transf er scheme of Government of India with effect from 1st April 2018. Und er this scheme, around 629 fellows hips were transferred to the Junior R esearch Fellows / Senior Research fellows’ respective bank accounts.

O ne disadvantage for DBT JRF BET exam is that it does not provide L ectureship Eligibility, which CSIR U GC NET provides. The same entrance for CSIR JRF also determines t he eligibility of candidates (i.e it is o nly the eligibility criteria) for Lect ureship positions in Indian University/Colleges. Those who qualify for JRF are also eligible for Lectureship a utomatically, subject to fulfilling t he eligibility criteria laid down by UGC. Majority of the student section may f ind CSIR qualification to be most p restigious, and also to be opening v aried areas to be pursued for research, but that is because DBT JRF h as not got much awareness among s tudents. And that also makes DBT JRF exam much less competitive.

The discipline of BET syllabus bei ng restricted only to Biotechnology and its subfields, needless to say, the p reparation of this exam becomes o nly qualifying subject-specific and t he candidate does not have to vent ure into other subjects, which obv iously is time-consuming. While p reparing for CSIR exam, one also gets prepared for other Biotechnology based entrances including BET, so one should definitely not miss out on appearing for this exam if they are already preparing for CSIR. B iotechnology is knowledge and technology-intensive area, which bec omes obsolete at a very fast pace.

W ith the constant progress in hum an civilization, people started to d evise techniques to cure or evade diseases. This beckoned the dawn of m edical science and technology and lead to pioneering discoveries and inv entions. We have developed many e ffective treatments like antibiotics, vaccines to name some, but still, we h aven’t completely come out of the grip of diseases. Still, there are many i nstances of new or reemerging outbreaks in the current world regardless o f the advancement, taking a grave toll on the human population as well a s challenging the medical practices and research.

Epidemic vs Pandemic Throughout the history of mankind, we find many instances of deadly diseases which are termed as epidemics or pandemics. Though there is a deb ate for these two terms about their a ppropriate usage, officially when a n epidemic crosses the country’s b oundary across continents it is declared to be a pandemic.

The earliest recorded pandemic can b e traced back to the Peloponnesian War. The plague which spread across c ountries and continents from Liby a, Ethiopia, and Egypt to Athens.

The plague had the symptoms of fev er, skin lesions, bloody throat, and tongue, etc. which killed almost twothirds of the population. It is was the major reason behind the defeat of the Athenians in the war.

O f recent, we had many outbreaks of severe nature. One being the Ebola

virus outbreak in West Africa. Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a rare hemorrhagic and deadly fever, which affects h uman and non-human primates. It spreads via direct contact with an infected animal or a sick or dead person i nfected with the Ebola virus. As it is still restricted to western Africa so still considered an epidemic.

A nother such outbreak is of insidious Zika pandemic which had spread across more than 80 countries or geo graphic territories. Zika virus, initially thought as inconsequential as it w as only confined to some African/ A sian countries but in recent years i t had been spread across the world acquiring the status of the pandemic b ecause of the vector – ubiquitous m osquito Aedes aegypti. The most dangerous feature of the disease is the unprecedented ability to harm the unborn child.

T hough these are some examples t here are any more instances of epidemic and pandemic occurring in the world. For all such recent outbreaks, a lot of research is going on in treatment, disease management, and prevention in the form of vaccine development.

Vaccines T he concept of a vaccine has been existing for a long time, but a significant and distinguished experiment by Edward Jenner helped to establish the concept. His work involved inoculation of a 13-year-old boy with vaccinia virus which successfully imparted resistance against smallpox. With this

s uccessful immunization process, m any researchers including Louis Pasteur, Alexander Glenny, etc. contributed to further develop the field of vaccinology.

B asically, any biological immunog enic preparation with the ability t o impart immunologic resistance against disease is a vaccine. Vaccine p reparation can range from a weakened or killed microbe to an isolated toxin or surface protein and carbohyd rate. Recent developments in RDT have been utilized to create recombinant vaccines and recombinant vector vaccines. Another latest development i s multisubunit vaccine and DNA v accine is in pipeline. A vaccine is a mimic of the pathogen which can s timulate the immune system but should not cause the diseases.

The mechanism behind the vaccine is the activation of adaptive immunit y to generate memory cells, which can immediately stop the pathogen in case of infection by triggering memory response. Memory response is very intense and rapid immune response in form antibody production and activat ion cell-mediated immunity, which e liminates the infection/pathogen from the body before it can cause disease.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases According to the World Health Organization (WHO), active immunization by vaccination saves the lives of 2.5 million people on a yearly basis.

The best instance could be of small-

pox, a deadly and disfiguring disease caused by the Variola virus which has r avaged the human population for t housands of years. By undertaking an active immunization mission cond ucted throughout the world it was f inally eradicated in 1980 with no more naturally occurring cases so far.

Similarly, Polio has been almost eradicated from the world except for few l ocations. A staggering number of children at approximately 18 million h ave been successfully saved from paralysis by the efforts of Global Pol io Eradication Initiative’s (GPEI) s ince 1988. Moreover, vaccination c an also reduce the medical cost worldwide which is a serious burden m ainly for developing and underdeveloped countries.

O f late there is an emergence of v accine hesitancy among people, w hich is of serious concern and has been listed as one of the top 10 global health threats by WHO in 2019. As a consequence, many vaccine-preventa ble diseases are on rising globally.

The incidences of measles and dipht heria have gone up by 30% worldw ide. In North America alone more than 71,550 cases of whooping cough have been diagnosed over a nine-year s pan since 2008, along with 15,000 cases of mumps. Similarly, about 670 m easles outbreaks were reported in t he US in 2014, even after when it w as declared eradicated by CDC in the year 2000.

Reasons behind these outbreaks are listed as a refusal to vaccination, und er-vaccination, global travel, and less effective vaccines.

Vaccination against the pathogen offers some protection. Vaccine mostly a vailable is polysaccharide and conj ugate vaccines in bivalent (A, C), trivalent (A, C, W135), and quadrival ent (A, C, W135, Y) formulations.

8. Hepatitis Hepatitis is inflammation and damage of the liver caused by a viral infection. Classified as Hepatitis A, B, a nd C depending on the causative v irus. All-cause acute infection, but mostly B and C lead to chronic infection.

Hepatitis A infection causes mild to severe illness. Most patients make full recovery but in cases of severe illness, c omplications can arise leading to acute liver failure and high mortality.

T ransmitted primarily via the fecal/ oral route or direct contact. Improved s anitation and immunization are effective preventive measures.

Hepatitis B infection is a serious live r disease responsible for the death of 780,000 people yearly due to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Transmission occurs via direct contact with the b lood or other body fluids of an inf ected person. It is preventable with

9. Tetanus Tetanus also is known as lockjaw, is a fatal bacterial disease, caused by ubiquitous Clostridium tetanus mainly through exposure to spores. These human races have certain fundamental rights which are formulated by them alone. Whether we behave good or evilly, no matter what we do, these rights cannot be taken away.

But have you ever thought about ani mals, they are also living creatures.

They also talk, walk, reproduce, have feelings and even think in their own w ays. So should we give other animals fundamental rights? Some might say “No’ because we need animals for food, scientific experiments, for drug t esting, for studying their behavior, f or entertainment (animals in cages) and much more. What if, the animals like pigs, mice, and octopus have the right to prevent itself from being eaten by humans. What will be the consequences?

2 . Should We Make Human-Animal hybrids (chimeras)?

M uch progress has been made in the field of genetic engineering and a lot of research is going all around the globe. Scientists are successful in making clones, robots, and even chimeras.

Not only genetically modified organi sms like a mule (transgenic horse a nd donkey mate), but plants have a lso been made. Even the researches a re going to a level where scientists want to make a human-animal hybrid w hich involves animal embryos and human stem cells. Although researchers kept it at a cellular level, still it’s a point of discussion that whether these k inds of experiments violate human d ignity or not. Interspecies research might help in understanding humani ty or curing diseases but we should not forget that we are creating an en-

3. Should Humans Be Allowed To Create Their Own Babies And Pets?

W hat if we have the right to select genome of our children or can design our own babies or pets? You all may agree as we all want our babies or pets to look not only beautiful but we want t hem to be strong, disease free and p erfect in all possible sense. Well to some extent it is good if we have the right to edit or design our baby’s gen ome than we can prevent our children from an early death due to any genetic disorder.

I n some countries, it has already been done where parents have the legal right to shape their children’s genome in various ways. The parent can s creen their embryos during In vitro fertilization (IVF) and even abort t heir fetus if they find it with some disorders like Down’s syndrome. Even the powerful gene editing tool that we have with us is CRISPR. But how far we can go in this, is there any limit of our desires or do we have set any limits for ourselves.

W e humans can go to any extent and Eugenics is the answer, which is a science of human species improvem ent by selectively mating people w ith desirable hereditary traits. The aim of this science is to limit human s ufferings by breeding out undesira ble characters, disabilities, and dise ases from human populations. This led to forced sterilizations and geno-

c ides which might be an intentional a ction to destroy a people in whole.

The lesson we can draw from this is that let nature do it the way it does it in unchecked and without any human interference and just embrace the diversity it endeavors.

4 . Should Other Planets Be Colonized By Humans?

W e, humans, are very curious, w e want to know everything about p lants, animals, ecosystems, world and even the universe. Every day we c ome across some new theories, inventions, and discoveries by scientists all around the world. The curiosity to k now about everything has taken us to the moon and now to other planets l ike Mars. Scientists are thinking of the possibility that if we can colonize other planets as well and utilize the resources present there for human welfare. So what do you think is it right to take over or colonize other planets?

T here is a possibility that like we humans colonize earth, maybe there a re some other creatures which are present in other planets as well. Maybe it’s just microbes or some creatures other than humans as we see in many movies- maybe they have no life at all.

Some might say that there is no harm a s we are part of the natural world and everything that we do is not bad and even human settlement might enhance nature. But on the other hand, w e cannot deny the fact that the int erference of humans in space has a lready resulted in space pollution which has raised a concern. There is

also a possibility that the creatures or so-called aliens that might be present i n other planets don’t like our interference and as we see in movies might result in human destruction after all we don’t have “Avengers” to protect us in real life. Universe has a natural way of doing things and us humans have no right to mess it up.

N obody can deny the fact that our planet Earth is very much rich in bio diversity. New species are formed or evolved with time and some have extinct due to natural disasters, some are in the verge of extinction due to a nthropogenic activities like poachi ng, deforestation, urbanization, and many more which is not good for our f uture life on earth. But what if this extinction is not permanent? What if we can bring back some of the species that we have lost? Sounds interesting and refreshing right!

N ew advances in genetic engineeri ng especially CRISPR-Cas 9 system h ave revolutionized science in such a way that scientists are thinking of bringing “de-extinction”. We humans a lways dream of a wild, untouched, nature, a kind of “Disney” version of nature from Garden of Eden to nature documentaries whereas nature, in rea lity, is always complex, messy and unpredictable. What if the animals we are thinking of bringing back may bec ome uncontrolled and might result in destruction. Would it thrive in the 21st century when its habitat has been destroyed and food sources depleted?

T here is a risk, species would be ret urned only to face extinction again or, perhaps worse, become an invasive species itself and cause others to disappear. There is a whole range of really complex ecological arguments and problems to think about.

Although scientists are taking a lot of precautions in the term that these life forms will depend on chemicals that don’t occur naturally or used by other organisms. The question is can we control these creatures, can we ensure that these forms will remain the way we want them?

I n theory, it might appear that this s ynthetic life may or may not pose risk to humans but there is a possibili ty that the immune bacteria we are developing that do well in science lab could come in bacteria that wound up o ur body. There may be a potential risk to us and wildlife with this synthetic life.

ICGEB SMART Fellowship Programme 2019

T

he notification for the ICGEBSMART Fellowship Programme 2019 – Scientific Mobility for Advanced Research Training (SMART) is now available. MSc candidates, young researchers with backgorunds in life sciences are encouraged to apply for this collaborative effort.

The ICGEB SMART Fellowship programme promotes the mobility of researchers involving ICGEB Member States as a means of improving skill development, acquisition of particular hands-on training in new technology and increasing collaboration in science and technology and should reveal clear signs of strong collaboration between both labs.

Application guidelines: Purpose: The programme promotes the mobility of researchers between the ICGEB Member States as a means of improving skill development, acquisition of specific handson training in technologies available in the receiving lab and increasing bilateral cooperation in science and technology, and should show clear evidence of strong collaboration between both labs. Applicants should focus on the impact for the fellow’s career, the benefit to the applicant’s home lab as well as the suitability of the receiving lab.

Subject Area: Applications are welcome in any area of the Life Sciences.

Qualification: The call is open to nationals of ICGEB Member States and provides fellowships to scientists in the early stage of their career wishing to spend between 3 and 9 months at a research institution in an ICGEB Member State other than their own. Fellowships for mobility support to laboratories located in Italy, India and South Africa could be considered if the research activity proposed isn’t covered by one of the ICGEB labs (please see ICGEB Arturo Falaschi Short-term fellowships). There is no age limit. But preference is given to young scientists at the beginning of their research career. Applicants ought to be either registered for a PhD or have obtained their PhD

degree within the last five years.

Young scientists holding an MSc or equivalent can apply.SMART Fellowships support mobility between labs located in the Member States.

Awards aren’t intended to prolong visits begun under other auspices; to encourage participation in courses, workshops or symposia or as bridging fellowships between, or prior to, long term stays funded by ICGEB or other organizations.

Terms and Benefits: Awards are for a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 9 months. The fellowship covers international economy return travel, health insurance and subsistence of the fellow only. The stipend ranges from US$ 800 to 1,500 a month based on local conditions in the receiving country and seniority of the applicant. Furthermore, a US$ 500 monthly bench fee may be paid directly to the receiving lab depending on the recommendation of the ICGEB Fellowships Committee.

The fellowship stipend will be paid by bank transfer directly to the fellow’s bank account. Upon joining the receiving lab, ICGEB will transfer the bench fee allocation to the receiving lab, which will be responsible for the management of the funds and the certificate of expenditures to ICGEB. The receiving lab is expected to ensure that adequate provisions are in place for the specific research project and also to make the bench fee allocation available to the ICGEB SMART Fellow immediately, free from any administrative overhead costs. ICGEB makes no financial provision, nor can it provide administrative support for family members of participants in the programme.

Bench Fee: The bench fee allowance paid in the framework of this ICGEB SMART fellowship is a contribution to the implementation of this research project proposal presented by the candidate. The receiving lab is expected to utilize the whole bench fee allocation to the benefit of the approved research-training programme. Any unspent balance left will need to be returned to ICGEB. Funds can only be utilized to cover the purchase of lab consumables that are directly related to this SMART Fellow’s research activities including general labware, cryoware, glassware and

The short term fellowship program has benefits of travel allowances included. Interested and eligible Indian nationals can check out all of the details on the program, the eligibility, the application procedure and benefits given below: About: Short-Term Fellowships fund research exchanges of up to 3 months between labs in eligible countries.

Awarded applicants can remain on their research visit for an extra three months (max ), nevertheless, EMBO won’t offer to finance for this elongated period. The intention is to facilitate valuable collaborations with research groups employing techniques which are inaccessible in the candidate’s lab. Short-Term Fellowships aren’t awarded for exchanges involving two laboratories in precisely the same country. Short-Term Fellowships are designed for joint research work instead of consultations. The fellowships cover travelling plus subsistence of this fellow only and not of dependents.

Eligibility: Applicants should be active researchers in any point in their career with a minimum of one year of research experience in the PhD-student level.

EMBO Short-Term Fellowships are awarded for research exchanges between labs in EMBC Member States, Associated Member States or Cooperation Partners. EMBO Short-Term Fellowships aren’t awarded for exchanges involving two laboratories in precisely the same country.

• The suitability of the host lab for the proposed work.

• Worth of this exchange for the labs involved (collaboration, co-publication).

The moment a decision is reached, normally within three to four months from submission of a complete application, applicants are informed promptly.

Benefits: Duration of support Short-Term Fellowships are meant for visits of 1 week (7 days) up to 3 months (90 days). Awarded applicants can remain on their research visit for an extra three months (max ), nevertheless, EMBO won’t offer to
