Why Go To Moon Or Mars While We Can Still Save Earth? Colonize Mars Or Save Earth? Why Mars While We Can Save Earth? Have you ever wondered – Why all are trying to go to Mars? Why do we want to inhabit Mars and recreate Earth-like atmosphere there? WHY NOT JUST REDIRECT THOSE IDEAS & MOTIVATION TOWARDS EARTH – OUR OWN PLANET AND REVIVE IT? IT IS EARTH THAT NEEDS OUR HELP TO REPLENISH ITSELF SO THAT IT CAN SUPPORT THE HUMAN RACE FOR CENTURIES TO COME! – WHY NOT SAVE IT FIRST? SO THE PRIME QUESTION HERE IS – COLONIZE MARS OR SAVE EARTH? OUR ELDERS TAUGHT US: By Ms. Urmimala Ray

INVEST IN FUTURE UNDOUBTEDLY BUT NEVER FORGET TO SAVE FOR THE BAD TIMES Presently much research is being carried out by people who want to go to Mars and make it a look-alike of Earth. First of all, people just don’t grasp the scale of it. It is an entire planet, not just some wetland that we can reclaim and build a parking garage on top of, it’s a whole planet. Furthermore, planet Earth is perfectly suited to us. Our ancestors and we grew up here tuned to these environments, to these very climates that we have here, on earth. Maybe people want to go to Mars or Moon just out of curiosity and in the spirit of adventure & exploration. We, humans, need adventure and we need great challenges to push ourselves to become the best versions of ourselves. Just because the mountains are there, we climb it.

Humankind and their ancestors kept on traversing planet Earth, crossing oceans, spreading across continents in the great tradition of a pioneering spirit to keep going, expanding and spreading out. So maybe people have general thinking about spreading even more and going to Mars. What they do not realize is that it is a whole other thing to go to Mars. There is nothing to eat, no air to breathe and there is hardly any water. Yes, we are talking about building a bubble and cooking the Martian rocks and getting the oxygen out of it. Well, it is just not so easy, isn’t it? And even if it is, why aren’t we doing that here on earth or use that same technology here on earth? It is becoming very important to remind people to start taking care of the earth in order for us all to live here. Right now there may be some 7.3 billion people. This might increase to 9B by 2050 or maybe even 10 billion people by the middle of this century. All of these people are going to want something to eat and drink, and that is why it is required to take much better care of our own planet. But it is better not to completely rule out the possibilities of colonizing Mars or Moon. Even if we don’t want to go to Mars and have a permanent settlement, a colony out there, we do want to have a base there just as humankind has a base in the Antarctic where scientists go and study the Antarctic, learn about the environment, learn about our planet, learn about ice and the Earth’s history and the climate today and the greenhouse gases and the effect of in-

dustrial emissions and so on, all these discoveries are made in Antarctica. It would be really astounding if we were to discover evidence of life on Mars, something that was once alive there, the equivalent of what geologists call stromatolite, fossilized bacteria that have turned to stone, and if we found something still alive there. What has been found on Mars are the recurring slope lineae, which is a geology expression for what look like rivulets, or little rivers. They can also be just rock falls which turned over gravel and hence has a slightly different color than the surrounding rock, but right now people at the National Aeronautics and Space Station NASA, European Space Agency ESA, JAXA Japanese Aerospace Exploration, all believe that it is water. Everybody believes that there must be some subterranean, some under sand/ice melt

if there are recurring flows of water every Martian summer. And it’s obvious that if we have liquid water anywhere on earth there’s something alive. Wherever there is liquid water there is something alive. If there is something alive on Mars, and we could prove it, show it to ourselves with our spacecraft or with human explorers walking around, it would probably change the world. It would be like the discoveries of Copernicus about the earth going around – all the planets go around the sun, not the other way around. Or that of Galileo, that we’re not the only body out in the cosmos. We have got the moon as do other planets, like Jupiter which has its own moons. These other discoveries were so profound. Why is that we are so bothered about exploring space when we’ve got prob-

oil bubbling out of the Earth and the coal that was easily accessible. Now, we have come to a position where it takes an offshore drilling rig to get at the oil. These are the resources that the Earth took millions and even billions of years to accumulate for us to use, and transcend. To think about it, if we have any other species evolving intelligence and opposable thumbs, they won’t have those easily accessible resources to jumpstart their own space exploration program.

lems to fix right here on Earth. We, human beings are indeed messing up the environment, wiping out species faster than any natural disaster in the history of planet Earth. We are all aware of the dangerous experiments that we are doing on the climate of the planet, increasing temperatures worldwide, with devastating consequences, for both ecosystems and human civilization. We are only going to raise temperatures to levels unseen in millions of years unless we get this under control right away. There are actually islands of plastic garbage getting collected into huge toxic rafts by the currents in the oceans. Pesticides and habitat loss are killing colonies of bees. We are even polluting the space around the Earth with debris that might tear apart future space mission. The science itself is speaking about the mess that we are making here. For now, space travel is an unwanted business. Presently, there is two major crisis going on at your home planet: global warming and the worldwide economic crisis, the first one being the most severe issue the earth is going through. We sincerely have to take care of our planet before we go roaming other planets. This whole question is a false dilemma fallacy. Why is it that we have to choose between space exploration and saving the planet? Why is it not possible that we do both? In 2014, the world spent nearly $750 billion on cigarettes. Elon Musk feels that he can start sending colonists to Mars for less than $10 billion, where NASA’s total budget is less than $20 billion. Instead, why not make the whole world to stop smoking, and spend $20 billion on colonizing Mars and the other $730 billion on renewable fuels and cleaning up the negative impact on the environment, which can definitely

reduce poverty and give people access to clean water. As per records, Americans spend almost $27 billion on takeout pizza. We spend an awful lot of money on things that could be redirected towards a vibrant and healthy industry of space exploration and towards reducing our environmental impact. World Space agencies spend billions of dollars on space exploration every year – no one is questioning the motive behind. Of Course, it will be a matter of pride for us all if we succeed in colonizing outer space but the prime concern here is – shouldn’t the same billions of dollars be plugged into saving our existing planet Earth first and then embark the outer space exploration journey? The other side of this story is that it might actually turn out that space exploration is the best way to save the Earth. Blue Origin’s Jeff Bezos says that we already know that Earth is the best place in the Solar System. Why not keep it that way. Mars might be an adventure to colonize and a fascinating place to visit, but we would still want to swim in rivers, climb mountains, walk-in forests, watch birds, sail in the ocean. There is a very simple reason for the need of colonizing the moon, according to Bezos, who believes that “Humanity’s very survival relies on colonizing space, starting with the moon”. Bezos’s Blue Origin & team recently unveiled a lunar-lander vehicle, called Blue Moon, designed to deliver a variety of payloads to the moon. The ultimate goal eventually is to help humans establish, “sustained human presence” on Earth’s moon: Bezos states in a presentation at Amazon’s Re: Mars tech conference. In his view, the reason we have got to go to space is to save the Earth. We need to keep moving if we are going to continue to grow this civilization – and this

has to be continued; something our grandchildren will work on and their grandchildren and so on. This is not something that only this generation is going to accomplish But the way we’re exploiting our surrounding, the natural environment, is going to take all that away from us. I completely agree with Bezos where he says that we should move all the heavy industry off Earth and up into space. We can also use solar collectors to gather power and mine asteroids for their raw materials. Isn’t it a much better thought to keep Earth as pristine as possible? For that, we actually have to go into space and learn how to survive and run that industry, from there. It might be that we’ve already crossed the point of no return. There is a great science fiction story by Spider Robinson called “In the Olden Days”. It is about how modern society turned its back on technology and lost the ability to ever recover. Humanity has used up the entire technology ladder that nature had put in front of us; the chunks of iron just sitting on the ground, the

According to Elon Musk, we have to protect the cradle of consciousness. We have to assume that the Earth is the only place in the Universe that evolved intelligent life until we find proof otherwise. Even if we succeed in searching out biosignatures of life on nearby extrasolar earth, we won’t be capable of journeying there anytime soon. Thus, we should become more and more appreciative of what Earth offers and why we should be doing more to protect it; including its disappearing species of rhinos, elephants, tigers, lions, dolphins, and whales. The present generation is certainly the tip of the spear that is ever slowly moving its way into the cosmos. But it is also notable that we live in an era of strange dichotomies, where we remain fixated on finding life off-planet when we still haven’t cataloged all of our own Earth’s biota. The biggest current blindside is that we simply do not care about planet Earth. The odds remain in our favor in terms of calamitous impactors. Things we learn from cleaning up our own planet Earth and preserving its flora-fauna will only assist us when terraforming the world next door. But before fretting about terraforming Mars or any other planet in our Galaxy, we should deal with our own environmental issues here first. We would love to know are readers views on this – Why Go To Moon Or Mars While We Can Still Save Earth? Colonize Mars Or Save Earth? Do share your reviews in the comment section below.

New Experimental Drugs Against Ebola Virus, Saving Lives in Congo These Two Experimental Drugs Against Ebola Virus are successful in Blocking this deadly virus. According to a report, More than 1,800 people have died in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo since Ebola broke out there in August last year. THE VIRUS IS TRANSMITTED TO PEOPLE FROM WILD ANIMALS ALSO CALLED AS ZOONOTIC DISEASE. EBOLA VIRUS THEN SPREADS AMONG HUMAN BEINGS THROUGH DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE BLOOD, BODY FLUIDS OR OTHER SECRETIONS OF INFECTED PEOPLE. By Rahul Mishra

Ebola, a kind of hemorrhagic fever, has a very high rate of mortality rate. Dr. Michael Ryan of the World Health Organization said about 75 percent of those who become infected with this virus and receive no special care die. The US Health Authority, co-funding the research said that the Two Drugs were under Clinical Trials. These drugs were found to significantly boost survival rates by blocking the Ebola Virus. Researchers believe that The New Experimental Drugs Against Ebola Viruses is a step closer to its effective treatment. The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) said that the Study had begun last year in The Democratic Republic of Congo but its current phase has been halted and all future patients have been switched over to the treatment. The majority of the patients undergoing this treatment has shown a positive result. Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH’s

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told that these are the first drugs that have clearly shown a significant decrease in mortality rate among patients suffering from the Ebola Virus disease. These New Experimental Drugs against Ebola Virus have been named REGN-EB3 and mAb114. Zmapp and remdesivir were two other drugs being used to treat Ebola Patients which are now been discontinued. The Clinical Trial was designed to include 725 people, but was halted by an independent board when it had enrolled 681 people, Fauci said. This was because one of the drugs, REGN-

EB3 by Regeneron, reached a critical threshold in success, while another drug called mAb114 was not far behind. The data has been analyzed for 499 people from the cohort of 681, so far. A decrease in Mortality rate was observed by 29% with REGN-EB3 and by 34% when treated with mAb114. The Mortality rate for Zmapp and remdesivir were 49% and 53% respectively. Some of the drugs namely, REGN-EB3, mAb114, and Zmapp are monoclonal antibodies (MAB) that bind to glycoprotein on the surface of the Ebola virus and neutralize its ability to infect other cells. The Final result of Data Analysis would be out by October, after which

the complete results would be submitted for publication in the peer-reviewed medical literature, Fauci added. Jeremy Farrar, director of Britain’s Wellcome Trust research charity, said that this trial for Experimental Drugs Against Ebola – will undoubtedly help researchers understand which treatment to administer patients in case of further Ebola Outbreaks. But, Anthony Fauci believes that a good vaccine is key to eliminate the virus. Other key factors that may help reduce the Outbreak are contact tracing, isolation, and then, ultimately, treatment.

IIT Kgp Scientists Develop Pre-Screening Tool For Cancer Using Machine Learning Esophageal cancer or cancer of the food pipe is among the most common cancer that affects people in India. Every year some 47,000 new instances are reported. Also, 42,000 people die due to Esophageal cancer – which is often diagnosed at a later stage due to the lack of specific symptoms in patients. IITKGP – IIT KHARAGPUR RESEARCHERS BY UTILIZING MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES HAVE COME UP WITH A FEASIBLE OPTION TO TACKLE THE PROBLEM OF EARLY DETECTION FOR THIS CANCER TYPE. ByPreety Suman

They have established a machine learning-based algorithm for forecasting indicators of esophageal cancer cells, based on demographic data & outcomes of certain scientific tests – Which can assist in screening people for more tests to verify if they indeed have cancer cells or not. It is, in fact, a Pre-Screening Tool For Cancer detection which can be made use of by wellness workers in rural areas. The software program has been developed making use of data of 3000 persons collected by mobile testing vans of Mumbai-based Tata Memorial Hospital in backwoods of Maharashtra. From the information collected by a paramedical team on numerous factors, researchers made use of data on 49 factors such as tobacco intake, tobacco eating period, alcohol usage, cancer fatalities in the household, the problem in swallowing and so on. The cancer cells of the food pipeline are typically accompanied by signs and symptoms like pain while swallowing as well as hoarse voice. This software developed may be installed in premises of hospitals, health

centers or can be hosted in the cloud and accessed over the internet. A suspected patient can enter his or her demographic info, way of living details and also available scientific test results. The software program can predict if the person has a specific illness. The forecast can be refined by adding even more test outcomes. If the forecast declares, he or she may speak to a doctor for further examinations and treatment. If the prediction is favorable, he or she might contact a physician for more tests and also treatment,” clarified Dr. Sourangshu Bhattacharya, assistant teacher of computer science as well as design at IIT Kharagpur, who co-authored the research study along with Ph.D. trainee Asis Roy. The researchers made use of open-

source machine learning software – Weka and also LibSVM – along with python for developing the prediction software. The objective was to manage the parameters of machine learning formula so regarding making false typical rate (variety of diseased people being noted as regular) absolutely no as well as the selection of attributes (tests carried out by medical research laboratories) based on standards of expense or comfort. Dr. Bhattacharya while speaking to India Science Wire said that – they looked through overall a combination of 15 tests, costing 65000 INR and found subsets of tests costing 2000 INR, which have zero false-negative rates. They could then zero down to the subset which yields the highest accuracy. Similar to this, indices of

discomfort were assigned to each of the tests and assigned budgets to total discomfort that a patient may be willing or be able to suffer in order to get an initial diagnosis. The main idea was to allow users of the software or implementing agencies to be able to customize the selection of initial tests based on individual requirements. Machine learning-based algorithm can facilitate in the prediction of esophageal cancer cells relying upon demographic, way of life, medical history and tailored professional test, with an extremely high precision as much as 99.18% with a level of sensitivity nearing 100%, scientists have actually declared in the research published in the journal Artificial Intelligence in Medicine.

Estuarine Bacteria Eat Centuries Old Food – Metabolism Found To Be 1 Million Times Slower Just imagine having a metabolic rate of 1 million times slower than another person. This is what happens in those bacterias living in sediments at the way bottom of deep oceans and rivers. These microbes living at the bottom, only divide every 10 to 10,000 years. JUST COMPARE THE ESTUARINE BACTERIA METABOLISM TO THAT OF LAB-GROWN MICROBES THRIVING IN A NUTRIENT-RICH ENVIRONMENT WITH ALL THE FACTORS REQUIRED FOR THEIR GROWTH, SUCH AS ESCHERICHIA COLI, WHICH CAN DIVIDE IN AS LITTLE AS 20 MINUTES. By Ria Roy

Dead and organic detritus that sinks down into marine and estuarine sediments lock away carbon. As a matter of fact, practically fifty percent of natural organic carbon burial worldwide happens in estuaries as well as river delta systems. However, the mechanisms that regulate how much carbon is buried instead of that released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is still poorly recognized. An upcoming study by researchers from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, University of Texas-Austin and also the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that bacterias with slower metabolism residing and estuarine sediments – Estuarine Bacteria, or the subsurface, are consuming food that is centuries old as well as of extremely poor quality.

The scientists studied the debris and sediment cores from the White Oak River in North Carolina. The cores cover roughly 275 years of product material that sunk to the subsurface. Researchers discovered that the much deeper the microbes in the core, the slower they broke down their food, with a 1000-fold difference between microbes on top contrasted to the bottom of the sediment core. The deep subsurface bacterias with slower metabolism were able to utilize enzymes to break down the centuries-old proteins and carbohydrates. The subsurface microorganisms with

slower metabolism are well-adapted to where they live and also what they have to consume. In addition to eating old, poor-quality food, the ocean subsurface Estuarine Bacterias – tend to have more genes for DNA repair and also for spore development, which are survival systems in the subsurface. Spore formation enables these microbes to become dormant and also to survive tough conditions. Dr. Andrew Steen, who led the study, said that their work shows that those bacterias with slower metabolism are living the same way as any other mi-

crobe does but just that the metabolism is way slower and with some improved ability to eat and survive upon the low-quality food in their environment. Understanding the fact of how ocean subsurface bacteria live successfully on low-quality resources could uncover how to slow down metabolism in human organs so that they can survive longer during transplants. It is equally important to have a better understanding of how and where carbon is stored, which could protect us from the self-reinforcing cycles of climate change.

Cyborg Organoids For Viewing Early Stages Of Organ Development What does happen in the early days of organ development? How do cells or tissues organize to become a heart, a brain, kidney or any other organ? This critical period of organ development has long remained the black box of developmental biology. THIS WAS BECAUSE NO SENSOR WAS SMALL OR FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO OBSERVE THIS PROCESS WITHOUT DAMAGING THE CELLS AND TISSUES. HERE COMES THE IMPORTANCE OF CYBORG ORGANOIDS! By Ria Roy

Scientists from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) grew simplified organs known as organoids with fully integrated sensors to monitor the organ development. These are called as cyborg organoids. The Cyborg organoids with sensors offer a rare glimpse into the early stages of organ development. Jia Liu, Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at SEAS and senior author of the cyborg organoids study, said that she was so inspired by the natural organ development process in high school, in which 3-D organs start from few cells in 2-D structures. With the development of nanoelectronics that is so flexible, stretchable, soft and that can grow together with developing tissue through their natural development process, the embedded sensors in them can measure the entire activity of the organ developmental process. Now, the end result of the work was a piece of tissue with a nanoscale device completely distributed and integrated across the entire three-dimensional volume of the tissue.

This type of device with sensors emerges from the research work that Liu began as a graduate student in the lab of Charles M Lieber, The Joshua and Beth Friedman University Professor. Liu during her research once developed flexible, mesh-like nanoelectronics that could be injected in specific regions of tissue. Building on that particular design, Liu and his colleagues increased the stretchability of the nanoelectronics by changing the shape of the mesh from straight lines to serpentine structures which are similar kinds of structures used in wearable electronics. The team then transferred the mesh nanoelectronics onto a 2-D sheet of stem cells. Here the cells are covered and interwoven with the nano-

electronics with the help of cell-cell attraction forces. The stem cells then began to morph into a 3-D structure and the embedded nanoelectronics seamlessly reconfigured themselves along with the cells, resulting in fully-grown 3-D organoids with embedded sensors. The research findings on Cyborg organoids offering a rare view of early stages of the organ development were published in Nano Letters. The stem cells were then differentiated into cardiomyocytes i.e, heart cells and the scientists were able to monitor as well as record the electrophysiological activity for about 90 days. his method of Cyborg organoids allows to continuously monitor the

developmental process and understand how the dynamics of individual cells start to interact and synchronize during the entire organ developmental process said, Liu. He added, that it could be used to turn any organoid into cyborg organoids including complex organs like brain and pancreas organoids. In addition to Cyborg organoids revealing Early stages of organ development and helping to find the answer fundamental questions about cells, tissues in biology, cyborg organoids could be used to test and monitor patient-specific drug treatment. They can even be potentially used for transplantations.

Manipulation of Brain Cells Now Possible Using Smartphones A team of researchers from Korea and the United States invented a device that can control neural circuits in our brain, using an implant with the help of a smartphone. ACCORDING TO RAZA QAZI, A SCIENTIST AT THE KOREA ADVANCED INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (KAIST) AND THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER, THIS WIRELESS DEVICE ENABLES CHRONIC CHEMICAL AS WELL AS OPTICAL NEUROMODULATION, HENCE CAN PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN DRUG DELIVERY. By Rahul Mishra

Qazi said this modern technology substantially overshadows conventional methods made use of by neuroscientists, which typically entail inflexible metal tubes as well as optical fibers to deliver drugs and light. Aside from limiting the patients’ movement as a result of the physical connections with large equipment, their fairly rigid structure causes a lesion in soft brain cells with time, as a result making them not suitable for long term implantation. Though some efforts have actually been propounded partially alleviate adverse cell response by including soft probes and cordless platforms, the previous services were limited by their failure to provide medicines for long periods of time in addition to their large and also intricate control setups. To attain persistent wireless drug delivery, scientists had to address the essential obstacle of exhaustion and evaporation of drugs. Scientists from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology as well as the University of Washington in Seattle worked together to design a neural tool with a changeable drug cartridge, which might enable neuroscientists to examine the same mind circuits for numerous months without stressing over running out of drugs, hence removing

the major challenge. Manipulation of Brain Cells- How was it Achieved? ‘Plug and Play’ drug cartridges which they are essentially called as were assembled into a brain implant for mice with a soft and ultrathin probe which consisted of microfluidic channels and tiny LEDs (smaller than a grain of salt), for unlimited drug doses and light delivery. Scientists from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology as well as the University of Washington in Seattle worked together to design a neural tool with a changeable drug cartridge, which might enable neuroscientists to examine the same mind circuits for several months. Controlled with a classy and easy user interface on a smartphone phone, neuroscientists can quickly activate any kind of certain mix or specific sequencing of light and also drug distributions in any of the implanted target animals without the requirement to be physically inside the laboratory.

Using these wireless neural devices, researchers could also easily set up fully automated animal studies where the behavior of one animal could positively or negatively affect behavior in other animals by the conditional triggering of light and/or drug delivery. Jae-Woong Jeong, a professor of electrical engineering at KAIST said that this Powerful device which is used in the manipulation of Brain Cells is the fruit of advanced electronics design and powerful nanoscale engineering. He said that the scientists were further interested in scaling up this technology to make Brain Implants for Clinical Implantation. Scientists are planning to employ this technology for complex pharmacological studies which could be helpful in drug development for pain, addiction, and emotional disorders. Michael Bruchas, a professor of anesthesiology and pain medicine and pharmacology at the University of Washington School of Medicine, said that this will help neuroscientists in many ways including uncovering dis-

eases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, addiction, depression among others. The researchers at KAIST established soft electronic devices for wearable and implantable devices, as well as the neuroscientists at the Bruchas laboratory at the University of Washington studied brain circuits that regulate tension, anxiety, dependency, pain, and various other neuropsychiatric disorders. This worldwide collaborative initiative among engineers and neuroscientists over a period of 3 consecutive years and also various style iterations resulted in the validation of this effective brain implant in mice, which scientists believe can really speed up the uncovering of the brain functions and its illness. This research which involved the manipulation of brain cells was funded by various institutes such as the National Research Foundation of Korea, the U.S. National Institute of Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and Mallinckrodt Professorship.

69 Genes of Autism Spectrum Disorder Identified! A UCLA-led research group has identified the set of genes, including 16 new genes, that enhances the risk of autism. The findings of the research team were based on the studies conducted among the families with at least two children with an autism spectrum disorder. THE FINDINGS OF THE STUDY ARE PUBLISHED IN THE JOURNAL CELL. By Ria Roy

Scientists from UCLA, Stanford University and three other organizations with the help of whole-genome sequencing mapped the DNA of 2,300 people from nearly 500 families. Scientists found 69 sets of genes that increased the risk for autism spectrum disorder or ASD; Out of these 69 genes, 16 genes were not previously suspected to be associated with a risk for ASD. Scientists also identified hundreds of genes they suspect may increase the risk of autism based upon their proximity to those genes that were previously determined to carry an increased risk. This research revealed new biological pathways that had not previously been identified in the researches related to autism. The study’s co-lead author Elizabeth Ruzzo, a UCLA postdoctoral scholar, revealed that the research findings of the study also highlight the importance of learning how genetic variations or mutations i.e, the differences that make each person’s genome unique, are passed from parents to children affected with autism. Laura Pérez-Cano, the Former UCLA postdoctoral scholar, is the study’s other co-lead author. Ruzzo has also mentioned that when they compared parents of autistic children to that of the individuals without autism, researchers observed that the parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder carry rarer and highly damaging gene variants. These gene variants are frequently passed from the parents to the ASD affected children but not to the unaffected children which helps to identify that these gene

variants are significantly increasing the risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Out of the children considered for this research 960 had autism and 217 without autism. This helped researchers team to analyze the genetic differences between children with and without autism across different families. Dr. Daniel Geschwind, a senior author of the study and the Gordon and Virginia MacDonald Distinguished Professor of Human Genetics, Neurology, and Psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA stated that the studies conducted on families with multiple children affected with autism has helped the scientists to detect inherited mutations in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Geschwind, one of the director of the UCLA Center for Autism Research and Treatment and Director of the Institute of Precision Health at UCLA, said that the studies conducted by the UCLA-led research team show a substantial difference between the types of mutations that occur in different types of families that have more than

one Autism Spectrum Disorder affected child versus those having only one child with Autism. Dennis Wall, the study’s co-senior author, a Stanford University School of Medicine associate professor of pediatrics and of biomedical data science, said that the UCLA-led researchers identified newly determined 16 genes to be associated with an increased risk for autism which forms a network with the previously identified set of genes that are associated with the risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The way these genes interact with each other heightens the risk further. These genes associate with each other more tightly than the researcher’s expectation. These gene interactions appear to be an important link to autism spectrum disorder, Dennis added. The nearly 600 genes scientists presume to carry an enhanced risk of autism spectrum disorder were determined through “guilt by association” which means via their interactions with various other genes that already had been identified to carry an increased autism risk, said Ruzzo. Al-

though not all of those genes will be found to enhance the risk for autism, the analysis of the study indicated that future research studies will provide support for most of these genetics. The families in the study are part of the Autism Genetic Resource Exchange, or AGRE, which was created nearly twenty years back by researchers and the National Institutes of Health in partnership with Cure Autism Now, which is now a program of Autism Speaks. Autism is a spectrum of neurological disorders characterized by difficulties with communication and also social interaction. Geschwind has actually been working to identify the genetic causes and biological mechanism of the Autism spectrum disorder for more than a decade, and in the late 1990s, he led the growth of the AGRE resource used in the new study. In 2018, he and his colleagues at UCLA got their 2nd five-year give from the National Institutes of Health to further expand research on autism by studying the genetic root causes of autism in African American families.

T

he call for entries for the DST AWSAR Program has been announced. AWSAR was a big success last year and the call for this year has been released. Indian nationals pursuing any stream of Science & Technology (S&T) are encouraged to apply for the DST AWSAR Program as per details below: “Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR)” is an initiative of Department of Science and Technology (DST ), Government of India. It attempts to disseminate Indian research stories of Science, Technology & Innovation being pursued In the nation in a format that’s simple to comprehend and interesting for all of the stakeholders. DST invites lucid stories from PhD scholars and Post Doctoral Fellows (PDF) with a goal to strengthen the ecosystem of science communication and inculcate scientific character in society. Indian citizen pursuing PhD or PDF in almost any stream of Science and Technology (S&T), within the tenancy period of her/his research, can submit the entry. The narrative needs to link to research being pursued by him/her. What’s AWSAR? Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) is a brand new initiative commissioned by Department of Science and Technology (DST) and coordinated by Vigyan Prasar (An autonomous institute of DST) to link current gap in communication research to common person by using the latent potential of PhD Scholars and Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs). These are the goals of the initiative 1. Encourage youth pursuing higher studies to submit a minimum of one story/article according to their research work. 2. Foster, fortify and create scientific temper through popular science writing and producing a culture of science communication/popularisation among the scholars. 3. Recognize the initiative and also the output of researchers on the particular elements of physical,

natural, mathematical and information sciences, applied science, engineering, technology, and multi-disciplinary science. 4. Conduct training Workshops for Early Career Researchers (PhD Scholars and PDFs) in popular science writing. Submission of popular science stories associated with research work of PhD scholars and PDFs: Entries would be encouraged by research scholars and PDFs who would like to publish their research in a way that could appeal to non-scientific audiences. The story should revolve around the answering the questions like Why does my research matter?; Why is it significant? ; Why does it interest, researchers? ; Why should it interest the reader? ; objectively. The article has to be based on the research undertaken by the individual researcher. The article could be on complete or part of the research conducted, but it ought not to be a general review of the region and has to have the part of new knowledge generated as part of this research. The article must target a general audience via popular writing and ought not to be published elsewhere. It needs to be written in simple to comprehend terminology to communicate the importance of the search for its outreach. Qualification criteria for article submission: These are the eligibility criteria for submitting the article for the award. 1. The entries will be encouraged from the youth pursuing PhD in S&T and Post Doc fellows by a recognized University/R&D Institute. 2. Applicants have to be an Indian citizen. 3. Applicants can only submit an individual article in annually. Re-application by applicants in the prior years is invited, provided that the eligibility criteria continue to be met. But the previous winners of this award won’t be eligible to submit a research story second time in precisely the exact same category.

Selection Criteria: The following are the criteria for judging the entries 1. The entries will be judged on the basis of accuracy, clarity, insightfulness, fairness, and resourcefulness. 2. The entries should convincingly answer the questions like Why does the research matter? Does the article clarify the author’s research in a means that’s simple to understand? Is it a compelling read? etc.. 3. An Expert Panel of science communicators, media people, subject specialists and professionals, featured by DST, will assess the science stories that are submitted. Award categories: 1. Selection of best 100 entries of science awards and stories. a. For PhD researchers: The initial screening of this entry is going to be selected by an expert panel. 100 entries will be chosen and each will be given with cash prize of 10,000/ along with Certificate of Appreciation. b. For Postdoc fellows: Twenty entrances are chosen from articles submitted by PDFs relating to their own line of research. Each will be given with cash prize of 10,000/along with Certificate of Appreciation. 2. Selection of the top three major stories a. For PhD researchers: The best three articles/stories will be chosen from the leading 100 stories. Further, they’ll be awarded the cash prize of 1,00,000/, Rs.50,000/- and 25,000/- respectively.

b. For Postdoc fellows: One outstanding article/story will be chosen from the leading 25 stories. Further the exact same will be awarded the cash prize of 1,00,000/. These awards will be bestowed on 28 February in the National Science Day event each year. Each of the awardees will be provided with a chance to attend the Science Film Training Workshop arranged by Vigyan Prasar. The workshops plan to suggest tips for successful communication and remarkable writing in popular science writing format. An identified group of specialists will arrange a few workshops each year. The tentative theme will cover 1. Discover what makes writing good. 2. Emphasise an effective method of writing in the clearest way possible, use of jargon that describes its significance clearly. 3. Utilization of proper words, language, sentences clinches for certain effects 4. Strategies for original writing 5. Strategies for obtaining a hook to catch the eye of the reader. 6. Basic rules of style, the flow of words and phrases, Grammar and punctuation. Fundamental guidelines for submitting a popular science story: AWSAR programme will have the following guidelines for the execution: 1. Remembering Walter Munk – The Einstein Of The Ocean Episode 44 By Ms. Somhrita Pal

“People should treat the oceans like we do anything else that we care about – with consideration, with care, and affection. That’s it. For that, we must educate.” These are the words of a high-spirited scientist-explorer whose insights on the nature of winds, waves, and currents earned him global fame and recognition. A warm welcome to another exciting episode of Biotecnika’s very own podcast- the Voice of Biotecnika. Today we will take you to explore through the journey of a science explorer who loved the seas and lived with the seas – a short insight into the life and achievements of the world-renowned oceanographer – Walter Munk.

Institution of Oceanography at the University of California in San Diego. Walter Munk was one of the most celebrated oceanographers of his era – a scientist who devoted nearly 80 years to unraveling such questions as to where waves begin, why they may break violently or wash ashore gently, how sound travels thousands of miles through the water, and what informaKnown as the Einstein of the tion that journey might reveal about Oceans, Walter Munk lived a century the global ecosystem. questioning and solving the mysteries of the deep blue seas. came a US citizen and served briefly in the army before beginning what would be his seminal research for the navy. Walter Munk credited Sverdrup with playing a leading role in the development of wave forecasting, which military strategists used in the planning of the amphibious landing on north Africa in 1942, the Normandy invasion in 1944, and throughout the Pacific. New Scientist magazine credits Walter Munk with saving “countless lives by helping the Allied military determine when troops could make amphibious landings without being swamped by big surf hundreds of meters from a hostile shore”. Later in his career, he attracted wide attention, as well as some controversy, by using ocean acoustics to measure ocean temperatures, and thus to better understand climate change. In 1991 Walter Munk led an experiment near Heard Island, in the southern Indian Ocean. Understanding that sound travels more quickly in warm water than it does in cold water, Munk sent low-frequency sounds through the ocean. Even the test signal was detected as far away as Bermuda. Years later in an interview with The San Diego Union-Tribune, he said, “I still can’t believe that happened. We hadn’t even started the main experiment.” This was one of his greatest achievements, was able to prove at such large scales for the first time that different oceans were warming at different speeds. Such acoustic tests encountered some opposition from ma-

rine biologists who feared they might interfere with migratory patterns of whales and other animals. For the wide-ranging nature and applications of his work, Walter Munk was dubbed the “Einstein of the oceans” – a comparison Munk rejected by saying- Einstein was a great man. He was never on that level. He attended the California Institute of Technology where he received a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1939 and a master’s degree in geophysics in 1940 and the University of California at Los Angeles where he received a doctorate in oceanography in 1947. In 1947 Walter Munk became an assistant professor at Scripps. In 1954 he became a professor of geophysics and also was named a member of the UC’s Institute of Geophysics, based in Los Angeles and, in 1960, he established a branch of the institute on the Scripps campus in La Jolla. The new unit was established to study the earth, its atmosphere, oceans, and interior, using methods of experimental and mathematical physics. Until 1982, he served as director of the Scripps branch and as an associate director of the university-wide institute, which was renamed the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP). In 1963 Walter Munk led a study of the propagation across the Pacific Ocean of swells generated near Antarctica. The program measured fluctuations with pressure sensing Next Page>>>>

devices lowered to the ocean floor at six Pacific Ocean locations. Measurements were also made from Scripps’ Floating Instrument Platform (FLIP). He operated the recording station on American Samoa during the threemonth project. In 1969 he began measuring tides in the deep sea, using highly sophisticated pressure-sensing instruments that were dropped to the ocean floor and retrieved by acoustic release. Munk and Frank E. Snodgrass, a Scripps engineer with whom he worked for more than two decades, received the first award for ocean science and engineering given by the Marine Technology Society. Munk also played a lead role in developing a new method for measuring long-term changes in ocean temperature associated with global warming that was first tested in the Acoustic Thermometry of Ocean Climate (ATOC) project. The idea behind ATOC is to track the changes over time of the travel times of sound signals sent from underwater speakers to underwater receivers. Because sound travels faster in warmer water than cooler water, a long-term series of tests that recorded increasingly faster travel times would indicate the ocean is warming. After the war, Munk provided scientific support for the nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll. “It’s stunning; it’s horrible,” he said years later. “It’s not dark, it’s quite white. You see the boiling and the water vapor above you, like a curtain coming down all around you. His achievements were numerousstarting from The Arthur L. In 1977 he received the Alexander Agassiz Gold Medal of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1978 he was honored with the Captain Robert Dexter Conrad Award from the U.S. Navy. In 1983 Munk was honored with the President’s National Medal of Science, the nation’s highest award for lifetime achievement in scientific research, “for his unique contributions to the sciences of the geophysics and physical oceanography which have led to a better understanding of the earth’s rotation, the complexities of ocean waves, tidal processes and acoustic propagation.” In 1989 Munk was honored with the William Bowie Medal of the American Geophysical Union. In 1993 he received the Vetlesen Prize from Columbia University and the first Walter Munk Award for Distinguished Research in Oceanography Related to Sound and the Sea granted by the United States Navy and The Oceanography Society. In 1999 Munk was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences for his fundamental contributions to the field of oceanography, the first time the prize was awarded to an oceanographer. In 2001, he was the inaugural recipient of Prince Albert I Medal in the physical sciences of the oceans, which Prince Rainier of Monaco created in cooperation with the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans. Munk was honored with the 2010 Crafoord Prize in Geosciences from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his pioneering and fundamental contributions to our understanding of ocean circulation, tides and waves, and their role in the Earth’s dynamics.

• When Walter Munk accepted the 2010 Crafoord Prize in geosciences from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences – an award often compared to the Nobel, and which recognized a career that touched on waves and polar ice caps and warming seas – he opened a lecture about climate change by citing from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s classic poem “Kubla Khan”: The shadow of the dome of pleasure Floated midway on the waves; Where was heard the mingled measure From the fountain and the caves. It was a miracle of rare device, A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!

At a civic event on October 2017 that was part of a series of celebrations for his 100th birthday, an array of elected officials came to La Jolla to fete Munk when the boardwalk on La Jolla Shores was renamed in his honor and would become Walter Munk Way. With his thanks, Munk left the crowd with an observation to ponder. later he was heard saying“The CO2 we are putting into the atmosphere now is producing a rate of sea-level rise so that the Walter Munk Way is not going to enjoy another 100 years.
