Union Cabinet Clears Fresh DNA Technology Regulation Bill The Union Cabinet on Monday accepted the DNA Technology (Application and Use), Legislation Bill, 2019, that will allow the government to create a DNA data bank for solving crimes, tracing missing persons, and in identifying dead bodies.

UNION MINISTER OF HEALTH & SCIENCES, DR. HARSH VARDHAN SAID THAT THE BILL WILL LIKE A HELPING HAND FOR THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE DELIVERY SYSTEM.

It will empower the body by enabling the application of DNA evidence – which is the prime key to crime investigations and will also help maintain a uniform practice in all labs where DNA testing in India.

The DNA Technology Regulation Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha earlier this year in January but lapsed because of lack of support in the Rajya Sabha from the opposition.

Now, following the Cabinet’s nod, a fresh bill is going to be framed & presented in the upcoming few days in Parliament, sources said. The legislation attempts to launch Regional DNA Data Banks and a National DNA Data Bank.

The bill envisages that each DNA data bank will maintain indices like the crime scene index, suspects or undertrials’ indicator, offenders’ index, missing persons’ indicator, and

the deceased persons’ index. A DNA regulatory board is proposed to be established. Every laboratory that analyses DNA samples to establish an individual’s identity, has to be licensed by the board.

If approved, the DNA Technology Regulation Bill is likely to create provisions for the authorities to set up regional and national DNA data banks that will keep samples under categories like a missing person, suspect or under-trial, offenders,

crime scene, and also the person.

Bodily samples for DNA analysis could be gathered only from the individuals on consent. For people that have received a sentence of over seven years, the samples could be collected without permission.

Any misuse or leaking of DNA information will be punishable offense – with up to a year of imprisonment along with a fine of ~1 lakh, according to the bill. And, altering or destroying samples is punishable by up

to five years of imprisonment plus a fine of Rs two lakhs. The bill also prohibits all labs from conducting analysis or any DNA tests without accreditation with the DNA regulatory board, ensuring reliability and the quality of tests. The bill was originally proposed in 2007 along with the drafting started in 2012.

A petition filed saying that India does not have a DNA database to identify nearly 40,000 unclaimed bodies.

ICMR-NIRTH Scientists Identify New Biomarker For Malaria A team of researchers at ICMR-NIRTH, Jabalpur has identified a genetic arrangement in the body of malaria parasite which promises to help create a more sensitive diagnostic test for the deadly illness. The research findings were published in the journal PLoS One. PRESENTLY, EVALUATIONS USED FOR DIAGNOSING MALARIA ARE ACCORDING TO A GENE, HISTIDINE-RICH PROTEIN 2(HRP2), WHICH IS RICH IN AN AMINO ACID NAMED HISTIDINE. VARIOUS STUDIES HAVE REVEALED THAT THIS GENE CAN BE ABSENT IN SOME STRAINS OF THE MALARIA PARASITE.

Researchers from IIT Bombay – Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, have found that patches loaded with silver nanoparticles perform better than the collagen ones. Preliminary results have shown its capability to accelerate healing, minimize mobile toxicity and encourage cell viability.

The gel patch enables fast migration of cells along with supplying property that is antibacterial. Instead of collagen, gelatin – a derivative of collagen was utilized by the IIT Bombay researchers and with chemical modification, transformed the gelatin into a gel type. Institute of Life Sciences Scientists Develop Antibodies Against Chikungunya The Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneshwar research team has successfully developed antibodies against the Chikungunya viral (CHIKV) infection, after which it has entered into a non-exclusive license for product commercialization. The antibodies were created following decade-long research on the CHIKV disease at the ILS lab headed by Dr. Soma Chattopadhyay, a senior molecular virologist.

New Laser That Finds & Destroy Cancer Cells in the Blood Malignant Cancer cells via blood may spread to other areas of the body easily. Researchers have developed a new type of laser which could find and zap those tumor cells from the exterior of the skin.

This Technology was tested an analyzed on 28 patients who had melanoma & on 19 other healthy volunteers who didn’t have melanoma. They shone the laser onto the patients’ hands and found that over 10 seconds to 60 minutes, the technologies could identify circulating tumor cells in 27

Biotechnology programs in Master’s and doctoral degrees are covered under life science fields. In order to get admission, an appropriate bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree, is required from a recognized university.

Admission to the MSc program involves a two-round process. Round One consists of completing an online admissions application​. Applicants should consult the Skol tech requirements website to ensure they meet all required deadlines and submit all essential materials suc h as Personal statement/Motivation letter, Resume, 2 Letters of Recommendation, Diploma and/or current transcript, Official TOEFL or IELTS results and Official GRE scores.

There is no separate application for funding. All applicants are automatically considered for funding.

For every admitted M.Sc. student, Skoltech provides a fellowship including a monthly stipend and medical insurance. The applicants who have successfully passed the admission process and are enrolled at Skoltech do not pay for their studies. The cost is fully covered by the university; for students, education is free of charge. Commonwealth Government’s Research Training Program for Australian and International Students (RTP) The RTP is a source to fund the research needs of both Australian and international students undertaking Masters and Doctors research degrees. Universities are solely responsible for managing the RTP application, selection, and offer process.

The Arturo Falaschi ICGEB Fellowship Programmes The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) is an intergovernmental organization that conducts innovative research in life sciences for the benefit of developing countries in promoting biotechnology internationally. Both long and short-term fellowships are offered exclusively to the researchers who belong to the ICGEB Member States to carry out research in Cape Town (Africa), New Delhi or Trieste (Italy).

The long term fellowships are available to pursue a three-year PhD course as well as 2-year Postdoctoral research that involves intensive laboratory research activities, participation in seminars and communication training, etc. Monthly stipend for Postdoctoral research, in this case, is Euro 2,000, US$ 1,590, and ZAR 18,750 for Trieste, New Delhi, and Cape Town, respectively. For Ph.D., monthly stipend in Trieste is Euro 1,300, in New Delhi, it is US$ 1,020, and for Cape Town, it is ZAR 12,500.

Research costs are supported by the research group’s budget. Travel expenses for one round trip, Visa/permit of stay application and renewal costs are also available. Medical health insurance coverage is also provided for the duration of the fellowship. Short term fellowships for PhD the duration is 1-12 months and stipend is Euro 1,300 in Trieste, US$ 1,020 in New Delhi and ZAR 12,500 in Cape Town. Basic requirements for a PhD enrollments include being nationals of an ICGEB Member State, ICGEB Trieste applicants with a BSc (Honours)

degree; ICGEB Cape Town and New Delhi applicants with an MSc degree, English language proficiency certificate, etc. Age limit for PhD in regards to candidates from Trieste must be below the age of 32 years but no such age limit is there for applicants from ICGEB New Delhi and Cape Town.

9. Chinese Government Scholarships This initiative had been taken to enroll outstanding international students for undergraduate, Master & Doctor studies in China. This is a full scholarship which covers tuition waiver, accommodation, stipend, and medical insurance.

The eligibility criteria for this International Biotech Scholarships include being a citizen of a country other than P. R. China, being in good health. In order to apply for master’s programs, a bachelor’s degree is required with an age limit of 35. Similarly, for applying to doctoral programs, the candidate should hold a master’s degree and be under the age of 40. They also offered great help to me and which, which were part of my strategy for preparing the exam and multiple revisions have helped me to remember all the fact because the syllabus is very vast. And the more you revise, the more facts you are going to retain. So that was my strategy.

Q. Any notes making tips you would like to share?

I think everybody has their own unique style of making notes. For me, I used to make I used to have a mix of notes. For a few topics, I used to make handwritten notes and for a few other topics, especially wherever figures were involved. I used to type my notes in Microsoft world. And I used to take a printout of those notes along with the figures and starting from them.

Q. CSIR-NET cut-off seems to have increased this year, how was the paper according to you?

The exam in December was a little bit tough than the previous ones. I had although I had done a lot of practice by solving the question papers – last year question papers during my preparation. Still, I’ve found it difficult to manage time during the exam.

And because we had to go through all the questions of Part C because many of those questions were actually very tough, but because I had covered 10 units while studying, so I was able to solve 25 questions, but overall, the

level of the exam was a bit on the tough side.

Q. How did you prepare for the General Aptitude test?

I took the online classes of Biotecnika for general aptitude, which was held once in a week. And after that I used to practice questions of general aptitude, Though I didn’t use to spend that my time as I spent on the other topics, but still some amount of time I used to alot on general aptitude and solving the previous year question papers from the general aptitude section also helped me to gain confidence for this part.

Q. How important is aptitude and chemistry in the exam?

The weightage of general aptitude part in CSIR NET is 15% and the rest of the subject life science – it has a weightage of 85%. So, my major focus was on the subject knowledge only, but still, I devoted some amount of time on general aptitude because if we are able to solve at least five questions of general attitude, then it can help us gain those extra marks to stand out and to clear this exam.

Q. A computer-based test is much different than a paper-pen exam.

What is your opinion? How should one prioritize through the paper displayed on the screen?

When I took the CSIR exam in December 2018, so it was in pen and paper format. But I also took the GATE exam which was a computer-based test. So computer-based test is a little bit different from the pen and paper format – the strategy of attempting the exam is a little bit different, especially while selecting the questions.

So while selecting questions in computer-based tests the option of the mark for review comes in very handy.

And also we are provided with the draft sheets on which we can always write which questions we want to attempt and then go back to that those questions and read them thoroughly and then attempt those questions.

Q. How do you think classes In Biotecnika Noida were beneficial?

The classes in Biotecnika Noida are very good. Teachers were very helpful and knowledgeable and preparing for the exam with other fellow students created a sense of competition within me, which inspired me to act to excel and study more and work very hard to clear this exam.

Q. Did you take any professional help for your preparations?

were few topics for which I didn’t go through reference books, whatever was taught in the class I felt that it was enough. Like for example, in ecology, evolution, and genetics, the whatever we were taught in the class I studied and I didn’t go through any reference book for these topics, but for some other topics like biochemistry, developmental biology, cell signaling and Immunology along with plant physiology, also I did go through the reference books of these topics. And for biochemistry, I went through Lehninger Developmental Biology, I followed Gilbert and so on.

So if you wish to study any topic from a reference book, then you should choose that reference book from which you personally are able to understand very well because he CSIR NET is about your understandQ. Q. As a successful NET qualifier, what are your future plans?

I didn’t specifically take any professional help. For my preparations, the only help I took was coaching from Biotecnika. And, of course, the help and support of my family and especially my husband was always there and it always encouraged me to study harder and clear this exam.

Q. Did mock tests and study materials help your preparations?

Mock Test helped me a lot. And through the marks of the mock test, I used to get very authentic feedback about my level of preparation, and which gave me a chance to improve myself. And Biotecnika study materials were a very good source of revision for me. And whenever I used to complete one unit I used to solve all the questions all the empty queues given at the end of the study material books, and which was a very good practice session for me.

Though I’m not the last minute preparation, kind of a person. But still, my advice will be to study those topics only, which you have already done earlier. Revise those topics don’t go for the new topics. I think that will be the best for CSIR NET exam.

Q. Any recommendations and advice you would like to share?

My advice for my fellow students is to work hard and work smart for clearing any national level competiQ. There are many research books tive examination. You have to work and ample materials to study from, smart. I think it is even more important than working hard. how should one prioritize?

My ambition is to help and inspire other students by sharing the knowledge of Life Sciences with them. And so I’ll be working towards it. Thank you.
