David Hanks Legacy Scholarship
On a beautiful, warm August morning, hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and well-wishers gathered to officially celebrate Westminster Schools of Augusta’s 50th year. The Opening Convocation ceremony was followed by a small luncheon for current and previous board members, previous heads of school, and faculty and staff who have served Westminster for 20 years or more. These faithful servants have dedicated so much of themselves to discipling students and building the Kingdom through Christ-centered education.
Even in such esteemed company, David Hanks stands out as an eminently faithful leader. Through the years, Hanks has been known to many as a mentor and friend, and he is often affectionately called “Mr. Westminster.” For over 40 years, he has worked tirelessly to advance the causes of the school, raise funds to make provision where needed, and offer a helping hand to countless members of the extended Westminster family.

On this day, it was only fitting that the school should honor David Hanks for his four decades of faithful service by unveiling The David Hanks Legacy Scholarship. Created with utmost affection by Westminster’s board of trustees, The David Hanks Legacy Scholarship has been established to ensure that the legacy of Mr. Hanks’ unmatched love and service for Westminster live on in perpetuity.
While introducing the scholarship on that special day, Dr. Shawn Brower said, “For 50 years God has sustained Westminster and provided incredible people who have sacrificially given of themselves in immeasurable ways so the school might flourish into what it is today. However, we would like to recognize one special individual for his 43 years of immense abiding love, deep sacrifice, bold action, courageous leadership, and prayerful, deliberate and thoughtful Christ-honoring action in the 80s, 90s and 2000s.”
Mr. Hanks has been a parent of two Westminster students, the board chairman, an avid fundraiser, a faithful prayer warrior, a wise mentor, and an encouraging and positive presence at school activities and events.
Established with the characteristics of our beloved Mr. Hanks in mind, The David Hanks Legacy Scholarship will be given annually to an academically thriving sophomore or junior who embodies the following of Hanks’ characteristics:
• An evident and transparent love of Westminster
• A missional, servant’s heart for those in and outside of the school
• A proud ambassador and champion of the school
• A student of authentic character who exhibits a consistently positive attitude
Students will be nominated by and voted for by faculty in the late spring of each year. The student selected will receive a $5,000 scholarship toward their Westminster tuition for the upcoming academic year.
