Harris Back to Work Winning by a Sizable Margin, MPP Mike Harris Picks Up Where He Left Off WRITTEN BY: Todd Cowan
Now that the election dust has settled and most of the candidate signs have been removed, I caught up with re-elected Kitchener Conestoga MPP Mike Harris. Last week Harris was re-elected by over 4,000 votes. Speaking with Harris, he said their polling was looking strong, but you can never take anything for granted. His team continued to work hard from doorto-door canvassing at the beginning of the election, until Election Day when the focus was getting out the votes. Harris was relieved that the message from the voters was clear that the Government is on the right path, “unlike last year’s Federal election that had virtually no change after the elections.” Ridings in Waterloo Region that had potential change in representation, like Cambridge and Kitchener South Hespeler, had the same blue results. In provincial campaigns, unlike municipal campaigns, when dissecting the votes, a good portion of the number is due to the leader of the Party. There was a fair bit of criticism of Premier Doug Ford prior to the election, but clearly the Premier played a major role in the election of virtually unknown candidates in Cambridge and Kitchener South Hespeler. The last four years have
been busy for Harris. Clearly, he had not been sitting on his hands waiting for this election. Since MPP Belinda Karahalios (Cambridge) had left the PC party two years ago and MPP Amy Fee (Kitchener South Hespeler) had been on light duty due to personal family issues, Harris carried the weight of Waterloo Region for Government representation. Harris had delivered big provincial dollars for projects ranging from health care, homelessness, youth at risk and recreation across the Region. The standout project here in the rural townships would be the over $16 million dollars to the Township of Wellesley for their new recreation project. The $64 question I asked Harris is how can he top that? He acknowledged that he has been successful in the last four years representing not just his riding of Kitchener Conestoga but also Waterloo Region. Harris said there will continue to be community priorities, and that he will not be losing sight of the longer projects announced, such as the hospital funding. Harris raised the issue of Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph. He said “many previous Governments had announced this project, it has been on again/off again
