HOLIDAY VOICES WITH CHORDSPINNERS The Chordspinners is a women’s a capella group. We are extending an invite to women to come join us for 4 fun filled evenings singing traditional carols and holiday favourites, with a final Christmas concert on December 9th for family and friends. It’s the most wonderful time of the year when Christmas parades are coming to a main street near you.

This will be the 28th year of the Santa Claus Parade in Elmira. Murray Haight, the President of the Elmira Kiwanis Club, is the maestro behind organizing the parade.

Murray said that planning began back in August, when they had to contact the North Pole to make sure Santa is available for the parade. A lot of additional planning has taken place since then, in order to make this year’s parade a must-see event.

The Elmira Kiwanis have booked 7 marching bands and have over 20 floats and many other community groups registered for the parade.

From Girl Guides to Boys Scouts, it’s a total community event. Every year, both the parades and crowds keep growing.

A fair bit of planning goes into making the parade an annual success from organizing the floats,

Remembrance Days Of course our thoughts automatically turn to November 11th when each and every year we pause our daily routine wherever we are, for a few moments of quiet reflection and reverence in honour of those dear souls who went to war and did not return.

Some of us have the whole day off of work, while others are given the amount of time it takes to stand soundlessly wherever they may be at the 11th hour, as a show of respect and integrity.

It was during this last Remembrance Day Commemoration Service,

that I found myself unexpectedly overwhelmed by the moment and the pageantry which was unfolding in front of me, when I began to realize and take stock of all the other “Remembrance Days” in my life.

Remembrances and memories go hand in hand. As I pondered this revelation, it became apparent that we all have an accumulation of milestones of different categories which have mounted up as we sojourn through our lives.

Remembrances take many forms such as commemorations,

memories, tributes, celebrations, recollections.

Theypresent themselves in occasions such as birthdays, deaths, graduations, job opportunities, weddings, and events which have

When asked how local littering behaviour has changed, Marg says that she has “seen a marked improvement over the past 3 years, but there’s still a ways to go in getting people to use the garbage and recycling bins on the sidewalks.”

“People don’t know enough to put away their garbage” Marg says “We’ve got lots of garbage cans downtown. Why don’t people use them?

Why don’t they catch on?

I guess that some people just don’t understand.

They don’t have a clue.”

Marg has seen a marked improvement in garbage/ recycling habits in one demographic in particular – high school students.

“They’re really catching on” she says “I’m very pleased with them. High school students used to put all kinds of garbage around the Gore Park area

and now they don’t. They put it in the garbage cans.”

While people are getting better in their treatment of personal garbage, there’s still a ways to go.

“A lot of people are still throwing their recycling into the garbage” Marg says. “It used to be that everything ended up in the landfill. Now we have recycling. Why don’t more people use it?”

“Styrofoam is garbage.

It can’t be recycled. For years, I’ve told management of my apartment building, but they still don’t get it. I think it’s an educational issue where the Region has not got the message across as clearly as they could or should” she says.

If over 3% of the recycled material is contaminated, it gets rejected and

ends up in the landfill.

“I always rinse my bottles and cans out before I place them in the recycling bin. My sister does the same thing. A lot still leave the peanut butter or ketchup in there,” Marg says. “Sometimes I pick it out of their recycling, wash it up and put it out again.”

“I think I’m sorta helping everyone by saying Come on. Join me. It’s easy. Just take a bag with you wherever you go.”

LIFESTYLE Living in the townships and tips on just plain living

Vicious As an avid animal lover, Angie Prime cares for numerous pets and is used to living in close proximity to wildlife in rural Trail, BC. Little did she know that in August 2012, these two worlds would

collide and one of her beloved dogs, twelve-yearold Border Collie/Lab cross, Vicious, would live up to her bold name and fearlessly come to Angie’s rescue.

On a warm summer evening, Angie was relaxing in her living room with Vicious and her two other Pomeranian/ Chihuahua cross puppies, Iver and Otto. As she had done many evenings before, Angie had her lights turned off so as not to attract insects, and left the sliding door open to the backyard so her pets could go in and out. Suddenly, Angie sensed another presence in the room. Turning her head towards the kitchen, Angie found herself face-to-face with a cougar standing approximately two metres away. The big cat had walked into the

house through the open door and quietly crept through her kitchen, into the living room. Angie looked around helplessly and realized she was trapped. All she could do was lean back, put her arms up to shield her face and scream. Seconds later, the cougar pounced on top of her, pinning her to the couch.

Vicious suddenly launched herself at the cougar from across the room where she had been sleeping. The cougar disengaged from Angie and ran towards the open door. Vicious swiftly followed, barking protectively and chasing the cougar out of the house towards the green belt at the back of the property. Angie immediately jumped up and ran outside, calling for Vicious to come back. Neigh-

bours, who heard her screams, came outside to see what was happening.

It was at this time that Angie noticed the puncture wounds on her thigh from the cougar’s claws.

Not long after, Vicious came back panting and excited but fortunately unharmed. Conservation officers were called to the scene to investigate and agreed that Angie was extremely lucky to escape that episode virtually unharmed.

If Vicious hadn’t come to Angie’s rescue in that moment, authorities believe there would have been a completely different ending to this story.

Thanks to Vicious’ quick action and courageous instinct to protect her family, Angie is alive today and, for that, she is eternally grateful.

The Secret to Sneaking in More Vegetables

The secret to sneaking in more vegetables into your family’s diet - drum roll please - is not to. I have many people ask me how to get their kids, and even spouses, to eat more veggies. Many have read books or seen recipes on how to cleverly mask veggies in anything from pasta sauce to dessert.

My recommendation is this. Eat veggies. Make it a priority at meals but don’t hide them for goodness sake. I’m all about squeezing in as many nutrients as possible - go ahead, shred those carrots, puree those peas and throw some black beans into

your brownies. But, for the sake of your children and their trust in you, please stop hiding vegetables.

Allow vegetables to be openly talked about instead of a ‘secret op,’ in the kitchen. When we make a big deal about kids eating vegetables, or anything for that matter, we spin an unhealthy relationship with food. We create power struggles around food and open the door to a host of negotiations around what’s on our plate. “I’ll give you two scoops of ice cream if you eat all your carrots!”

Salsa for topping Directions Heat the vegetable oil in a large, non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add the potato and onion, season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, cook stirring occasionally until the onion starts to soften, about 2-3 minutes.

Add the Chorizo and cook, stirring occasionally until the potato cubes are tender and the Chorizo is cooked through, about 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, place the eggs in a medium sized

Reduce the heat to medium low, pour the egg mixture into the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, until the eggs are just set, about 3-4 minutes.

Remove from the heat and season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Dived the egg mixture among the tortillas and top with the tomato, cilantro, and cheese. Serve with salsa.

One relatively straightforward climate change model that scientists use is measuring sea level rise.

Sea level rise is caused primarily by only two factors, both related to fossil fuel burning: • added water from melting ice sheets and glaciers • the expansion of oceans as they warm Sea level rise measurements are taken by satellite altimeters and by tide gauge records. Recently, scientists have discovered that 3-D satellite imagery

from NASA, established “the planet’s upper surfaces—such as treetops and tall buildings,” as ground level. This means that satellite altimeters don’t distinguish between treetops, tops of grasses, and the land itself, which may be several feet below.

As a result, scientists have now come up with improved ways to measure sea level rise and the results are sobering.

This new understanding might explain the severe weather events that were expected a few decades from now but which we are experiencing in the present.

Today, those giant bodies of water we call the oceans, are 13-20 centimeters higher on average than in 1900.

Because the climate effects of CO2 from burning fossil fuels are delayed by a few decades, we are currently committed to more rising, locked in by our post-war, booming, fossil-fuel driven economy of the past 50-70 years.

Things are going to get worse, and then, if we act now, eventually, better.

ALTERNATIVES TO PROTECTING THE BLADES If you’re not convinced for one way or another, an alternative to lifting the blades up is to coat the wipers with rubbing alcohol using a cloth, as the liquid has a freezing point of around -88°C and will keep the blades from sticking to the window.

If that fails, you can always cover the blades with your old wool socks.

You may not be using them anymore on your feet, but they can be very handy for protecting your wipers from any ice or snow build up. The night before a storm, layer up your wipers with the socks and either stand them up or keep them laid down. The ice will stay off and your windshield will be clean and clear.

The number of people losing their homes and properties due to rising sea levels is expected to be in the neighbourhood of 150 300 million people over the next 30 years. We need to figure out how to care for and support these unfortunate people whose lives are/will be in crisis at the same time as our own stability is being reduced by extreme weather events.

Respect for solid institutions will be important in dealing with influxes of folks who have to find new places to live. The ability to provide food, shelter and warmth for those who travel though

our communities will be crucial.

To grow the strength and flexibility we’ll need, we must be positive, be active in supporting local government, local police, our faith groups, service clubs, charitable organizations, etc. When we have a chance to pitch in, don’t let’s waste it.

Every action together makes us stronger and more worthy of our privileged geography.

Think of the Newfoundland villages of about 7000 people, who suddenly had an influx of 7000 strangers when 911 occurred. Of course, we township folks will cope and cope well, but we need to get our minds right, be organized, and a little proactive thinking never hurts.

| Destructive Husbands and Wives Dear Friend, Destructive behavior can doom a marriage. When one spouse starts exhibiting destructive behavior, the only answer is to correct it and make it right.

Why do people become destructive? I believe there are four basic reasons: Ignorance. Hosea 4 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” I’ve seen this play out in my own marriage. Karen and I got married at 19 years old and neither of us had a clue. Schools teach math and science to students, but no one taught us how to succeed in relationships.

When you come from a broken home, you don’t

see a successful marriage.

All you see are failed or unhealthy relationships. How can you succeed without good examples? How can you succeed when you’re only drawing from ignorance?

That’s why having a teachable spirit is so essential to success. You have to be open to correction and willing to learn.

Past hurts. I brought a lot of pain into our marriage.

To me, it felt like a form of weakness. I didn’t want to reveal it to Karen. I was afraid my world would crumble if she knew about it. So I hid it behind an overbearing, macho front.

My fear kept my hurt in

the darkness, and that made my life distorted and dysfunctional.

Darkness is a breeding ground for the devil. He wants shame and fear to stay hidden, because healing arrives when we expose it to the light of God. It wasn’t until I finally began to admit my hurts to Karen that our relationship improved. I started talking to her. She knew I was messed up, but she wanted to hear it from me.

She wanted to see me deal with it rather than hide it.

I also had to take responsibility for my actions that resulted from the pain.

Bad friends and negative influences. “Do not

be deceived,” the Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:33. “Evil company corrupts good habits.” In other words, if you spend time with friends who lie, cheat, or get divorced, you are much more likely to be a person who lies, cheats, and gets divorced.

If you want to know what you’re going to look like in a few years, take a look at your friends. Your friends predict your future.

When Karen and I got married, I didn’t like Christians. I had no interest in going to church. It made me self-conscious. I always felt like the least spiritual person in the building. But Karen kept pushing us to get involved, and that was an important step in our marriage improving.

Going to church is one of the best ways to avoid negative influences. People at church still have plenty of issues, but they are people who rely on Jesus. They will encourage you to do the right thing. If bad company corrupts, then good company supports good habits.

Defensiveness. A person who is emotionally healthy can listen to anything, but those who take a defensive posture refuse to hear certain things. A defensive spouse will not allow the other spouse the right to complain. A defensive spouse does not validate the other spouse’s concerns.

This is why researchers identify defensiveness as a high predictor of divorce.

The behavior of defensive people destroys intimacy and good will. It inhibits honesty. It locks problems into a relationship, because the problems and concerns just accumulate.

They never go away.

Functional families talk, but dysfunctional families operate in silence, secrets, and defensiveness.

Are you a destructive husband or wife? Are past hurts, bad friends, or a defensive posture damaging your marriage? If so, take responsibility for this behavior and ask God to help you change—for the sake of your relationship.

Stuffin Stockings

Since 2010, Stuffin Stockings has stuffed thousands of stockings for kids, teens, adults with disabilities, mothers with infants, lonely seniors, the homeless and children undergoing cancer treatment. The St. Jacobs Lions Club has been a supporter of the campaign since the beginning, offering financial support as well as a location for volunteers to help stuff the stockings.

“Everyone deserves to feel special and remembered, especially

at Christmas” said Stuffin Stockings’ co-chair Deborah Malloy, noting the charity provides stockings for all ages. “We actually make the fewest stockings for children, because the need is so high for teens, adults, and seniors.”

The stockings are distributed through nearly 20 local organizations supporting the most vulnerable members of our community, including medical centres, children’s support services and seniors centres.

“No matter how generous the community, there is always someone in need, and we try our very best to include each and every one of those people.

It’s quite an undertaking,” says Malloy.

The charity is asking for help by either donating filled stockings or items to put inside the stockings.

Suggested items are gift cards, candy, gum, mittens, hair accessories, hats, cosmetics, small games and toys, as well as toiletries. One of the ways a business can help is by

setting up a collection bin at their office.

Donations can be delivered to Block 3 in St. Jacobs, Waterloo Town Square, or at Sky Zone in Kitchener until Dec. 11. Cash donations can be made directly on the website.

The charity is hosting their annual online fundraising auction “Making Spirits Bright”. www.32auctions.com/ makingspiritsbright2019.

Running Nov 17 through Nov. 24, the auction features a range of things perfect for gift giving!

Theatre tickets, spa packages, movie and dinner pairings, as well as some really unique items like a hot air balloon ride, a luxury cottage rental, even a ride on the Polar Express! They are hoping to raise $10,000 to generate enough funds to complete their entire wish list.

In 2018, Stuffin Stockings distributed more than 2,700 stockings, and is committed to making Christmas more joyful for those in need of Christmas cheer.

The Optimist Club of Wilmot will be hosting a Christmas Craft Sale at the Wilmot Recreation Complex on December 2nd. Ontario is committing more than $6.5 million in funding to food processors and other businesses in the agri-food sector to help them continue to support local jobs and bring safe, high-quality food to local and international markets.

The fund will be part of a $28-million joint investment in the sector — with the rest being funded by the businesses receiving the support — that will support more than 100 projects relating to food safety, labour productivity and waste reduction.

These projects will support the implementation of technology or other systems to enhance food

safety, and the move to advanced manufacturing technology to enhance labour. It will also help in the development of new products or processes designed to lead to significantly increased sales, says the government.

“Investing in these projects will help boost innovation, enhance productivity and increase sales for our food processing sector and open the doors to new markets for the incredibly high quality foods we produce,” says Ernie Hardeman, Ontario minister of agriculture, food and rural affairs.

Government Meetings After Government Meetings

A local federal MP once told me that voters across Canada have a bizarre belief that when the House of Commons is not in session then all parliamentarians are essentially on vacation.

Complete nonsense the member noted as breaks in Toronto or Ottawa are the intervals when MPPs and MPs can relocate to their ridings and focus on far more important responsibilities for their constituents.

The Ontario Legislature resumed on October 28 with a blizzard of activity following an extended

summer recess and federal election campaign.

On October 25, the Friday before MPPs returned on Monday, Minister of Municipal Affairs Steve Clark indicated that the review of regional government he had previously announced in January of this year was effectively over. His exact statement was that the province “will not force amalgamation of municipalities,” however if there are any new ideas anywhere related to saving taxpayer money Queen’s Park will certainly consider them.

music. By the third time you hear ‘Last Christmas’ play, you begin to wonder if the whole movie will be filled with this song or just the first ten minutes. All I have to say is buckle up, it is the title name.

We are greeted with beautiful and comedic performances from Emma Thompson and Emilia Clarke, bringing forward the same classic Christmas movie feel as the oldies that we have grown to love so much, such as Elf, The Santa Clause and Miracle on 34th Street.

Our actors play their roles seriously, which seems to be a different feel from where comedy has shifted into recently - being the over-thetop, “hope this is funny” kind of show. Henry Golding stands out as Hollywood’s next leading man. He is full of charisma and talent, offering a layered performance and he simply lights up the screen every time he appears.
