FACULTY OF ARTS, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Glyndwr University

“Welcome to Wrexham School of Art! We are delighted to present our final year student shows from all streams of our Art & Design portfolio.

Each and every year art schools throughout the land put on their end of year shows and each and every year it is a cause for celebration of the continued success of our creativity and industry. All our artists, designers and makers have risen to the challenges posed to them on programme and excelled within their own specialist areas. Each of our artists has demonstrated resilience, professionalism and a strong work ethic, working creatively and collaboratively as a community to present their projects and final pieces - often working across discipline boundaries developing hybridity – new directions, new ways of seeing, responding and making.

On behalf of the School, the Faculty and the University, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of the WSA staff involved in the process and of course to all of our graduating students – you have done us proud and there is much to celebrate – so let us all do just that!

Enjoy the exhibitions and keep in touch with us as you progress in your careers.

BA(HONS) ANIMATION

As an animator, I have always been fascinated by the history behind folklore and fairy tales, and the way that time has evolved these stories into the ones that we know today. My animation is a re-telling and a re-making of two tales from Europe; I wanted to showcase a new version of the Hansel and Gretel story using Baba Yaga as the main antagonist. Using stop motion I wish to pay homage to European history by creating an animation that showcases a story of growth, trust, and the unbreakable bond of Hansel and Gretel when faced with the challenges that they have to overcome.

@FORGOTTEN_TURTLE7

As an animator, I take great pleasure in both creating and observing 3D animations. I am constantly fascinated by the depth of personality and realism that can be imbued into a 3D model. I find it particularly intriguing when studios blend 2D and 3D animation techniques, resulting in a distinctive and innovative style. This approach, though not widely employed, produces animations that stand

out from the crowd and are easily recognisable. My work delves into the fusion of 2D and 3D animation methodologies, allowing me to craft unique pieces in my signature style that captivate diverse audiences. I particularly enjoy animating inanimate objects and fantastical creatures, as it provides me with complete creative freedom in determining how they interact within their environments.

My art represents a fusion of the primal and ancient. I am attracted to coarse textures and imperfect forms, lending my work a captivating, raw, and visceral quality. As an artist, I concentrate on palaeontology and mythology, two fields that enable me to delve into the dynamic and intriguing realms of prehistoric creatures and mythical beasts. I am captivated by how ancient beings can inspire fantastical creatures and undergo reimagination and reinterpretation. My coarse artistic style and emphasis on texture facilitate the

exploration of these subjects, vividly bringing to life these rugged entities. Whether I portray a ferocious predator or a gentle herbivore, my work seeks to convey the awe and wonder inherent in encountering something genuinely ancient. Ultimately, my art aims to bridge the gap between past and present, myth and reality. I hope that my creations encourage others to investigate our planet’s fascinating history and perceive the world around us with renewed curiosity and wonder.

Hana Murphy BA(HONS) ANIMATION

Being an animator, I have an interest in the wide range of storytelling styles in the medium, using our world as inspiration to create new ones. In my work I focus on a 2D style with fantasy aspects to animate characterdriven stories. I aim to use shape language and earth-tone colours to make these fantasy worlds intriguing yet familiar.

BA(HONS) APPLIED ART

Of mixed English/Welsh heritage, Deborah has returned to North Wales where she feels most at home. Her years of living in London have influenced Deborah’s work as much as her time spent in the countryside, and both are reflected in her art practice.

This collection, titled ‘Apart of the Whole’, is inspired by cityscapes; their line, form, geometry, and hardness, but also by the natural environment which is visible in the patterns and surface textures.

The repetition of form and pattern on the delicate ceramic vessel forms, to create a greater whole is a metaphor for human existence and has many meanings and connections.

Natasha Hicks BA(HONS) APPLIED ART

Born in South-East Asia, Natasha’s exposure to a large variety of cultures sowed the seeds for what would later become Natasha’s artistic inspirations. Historically, narrative has been a crucial element of how humans interact with each other and the world around us – this is the undercurrent that inspires what she makes. Natasha strives to invoke the sentimentality of human nature within her work, causing a sense of nostalgia, connection and belonging. Seeking inspiration from a wide variety of sources, she enjoys exploring how to use metal, enamel and mixed media to create stories that can be interacted with in a tangible way. She is particularly interested in how an object’s meaning can evolve depending on who is interacting with it.

‘Relative’ is named by her initial inspiration from Einstein’s theory of relativity, taking concepts such as time, memory, the subconscious, and simplifying them down to create physical ‘snapshots’.

Leila Hodgson

BA(HONS) APPLIED ART

The artwork by Leila Hodgson is largely inspired by the natural world and observing the small details within nature. This practice became especially prevalent during the lockdown period of 2020. Being in nature became comforting and time was taken to appreciate the artists natural surroundings, which influenced the artworks that followed.

Leila’s latest collection of ceramics is inspired by beetles, the colours, patterns and textures seen when observed in close detail.

Scale is important to Leila; the juxtaposition of large sculptural pieces sit alongside smaller and wearable pieces.

Oliver utilises colour, playfulness and humour within his ceramic work. He is inspired by history, architectural features, nature and mythology. He likes to bring joy to his work through the use of colour: representing optimism and positivity. Based on historical artefacts, Oliver creates a contemporary feel through his interpretation.

His illustrations are based in flora and fauna and caricatures. The pieces are constructed with terracotta and stoneware clay, layered with coloured slips and utilising the sgraffito technique. His work combines function and decoration to create objects for interior use. Being an artist makes Oliver happy and helps connect him with nature.

These animal inspired sculptures are replicas of creatures that live in an apocalyptic future created by mankind’s nuclear disaster. The reason the creatures survive within the radioactive wasteland is due to their genetic modifications that combine the resistant traits of Tardigrades with animals to create hybrids. An unfinished experiment carried out by humans -to allow animals to survive radiation- resulted in the hybrids eventually escaping the testing facility when buildings had crumbled to the ground and humanity ceased to exist.

A combination of different objects found around the remnants of the earth have been used by the creatures to modify and repair themselves such as cogs, keys, wire and screws while their bodies grow moss and are eroded by nature over time.

The sculptures before you show what could be the last life on earth, similar experiments currently have succeeded in combining tardigrade genetics to create radiation resistant tissue.

Tina Morgan BA(HONS) APPLIED ART

Tina has created a collection of display containers for wearable mixed-media art jewellery inspired by the found objects she collects during her walks on the beaches of North Wales. Tina captures a moment which will never be repeated and creates keepsake memories. Taking inspiration from history when precious relics were stored in protective reliquaries; Tina has created jewellery imagined from found objects that can be worn

during the day or displayed in an individually created protective, yet ornamental box. Each decorative and tactile piece displayed within the reliquaries captures a moment in time, sparking and creating memories. Each container is carefully handmade using ceramic hand building techniques. The wearable art is made using slip casting, sprig moulds and lost wax casting techniques.

Kid G Roberts

BA(HONS) APPLIED ART

Kid G is a mixed media artist from North Wales. They use a combination of airbrushing techniques, resin application and freeform crochet to create unique and unconventional wearable art. Their love for designing comes from their interest in alternative fashion in queer subcultures, and study of traditional metalwork and textile design. This collection titled ‘Xenochromatic’, meaning ‘alien colour’ is inspired by the more unfamiliar aspects of nature such as deep-sea creatures

and mycelium, in particular how these diverse environments cause native life to appear unrecognisable and alien in comparison to mundane human experience. Through their art, Kid wishes to convey appreciation for nontraditional jewellery designs and body adornment. They hope to encourage others to express and present themselves in ways that make them happy, outside of expectation. Their nonbinary identity inspires Kid to create art designed for enjoyment and wear by everyone.

Jamie Watson

BA(HONS) APPLIED ART

Jamie Watson is a playful maker, who during his studies has found himself captivated by the traditional skills of the silversmith. Through the processes of Raising, Chasing and repousse he takes flat pieces of metal and transforms them into elegant forms.

Movement is an important feature in Jamie’s work whether that being the movement of the metal during forming, or the movement of the work itself. This body of work is inspired by the meeting of water and sand at the shoreline. He has taken inspiration from the forms found in the sand left by the retreating of the water’s edge and transferred them to his vessels.

BA(HONS) FINE ART

Gwerydre

Gweryd - land; fig. grave.

Re’; Reol - place of, boundary, limit. When it’s dusk there is a place, between where I am standing and the top of the most distant mountain.

I’ve been to that place and when I get there it’s not THE place. By then there’s another place, between where I am standing and the top of the most distant mountain.

It is like trying to reach the end of the rainbow.

That place is often caught in a moment of light amidst the shadows.

Rain stings, wind bites, it becomes darker, and then the place is gone.

This is my work. Light and dark. I make sketches outside at dusk. Fleeting ink images moulded by the wind and rain as the light fades. Those sketches inform the canvases back at the studio. Paintings that attempt to capture something of the constancy and impermanence of Gwerydre.

I consider myself to be a transdisciplinary artist which in the specific context of my work means having a background in drawing and painting that I seek to expand through the use of other materials drawn from the world around me that form a more immediate connection to it. My process is driven by spontaneous experimentation, employing diverse media and disciplines to extend and expand my work beyond drawing and

painting, so its form tends to change in response. The content of the work itself explores aspects of the human form that fascinate me such as the functional interplay of the body’s own materials. I seek to do this in ways that unsettle the viewer by distorting, interrupting, and manipulating its form and content. I seek to use materials in my art that forms a conversation with the materials of the body itself. @ISOBELFINEART

BOOTS.HOWARD@GMAIL.COM @LIONELHOWARD63 @LIONELHOWARD6091

My art can be summed up in many ways! Personally I class it as Abstract, spontaneous action art. The only process that I have in mind is the colours that I will be using when constructing an art piece. The naivety of scraping paint, the way that the colours mix on the canvas, all brings and links my artwork together. The addition of metallic gold has begun to play a dominant role

in the completion of my art. The way that paint moves across the surface, along with the mixing of the paint as it is scrapped and dragged across the canvas, to produce a final imageless painting, where the meaning can be interpreted in a multitude of different ways by the viewer. I would consider my art as a total action drawn together with colour and movement.

@DANNI_ART1610

I am intrigued by the forms and structures of buildings, and their potential as architectural compositions. My aim is to deconstruct the building as a whole and emphasise the key structural points within it to draw attention the key features that I am interested with in each work. My practice focuses on buildings that stand apart often because they are brutalist in style. They have an air of science fiction to their design, yet they hold their own uniqueness. Functionally

I develop my work through a process of either deconstruction or reconstruction sometimes employing a collage aesthetic. Recently I have introduced digital methods of constructing my work as it allows for the precise manipulation of lines and layers as well as allowing greater creative freedom within the collage process. Through this method of working. I am trying to communicate my own visual experience of the rhythms and structures of architecture.

Graphic Design

As a graphic designer, Katie finds joy in exploring every facet of this creative field, but she is particularly drawn to the fusion of digital and analogue techniques. She is especially fascinated by the intricate processes of printmaking and paper cutting, which allow her to bring unique textures and visual effects to her designs.

In her recent work, Katie has focused on exploring the potential of print techniques

and branding to convey messages about sustainability and the environment. She has collaborated with Bica, a surf brand based in South Wales, to create a clothing line that promotes eco-consciousness and awareness. This project has allowed her to delve deeper into the intersection of design, art, and activism, and she is excited to continue exploring these themes in her future work.

MDES GRAPHIC DESIGN

The Secret Garden Temperance Bar is a project that draws inspiration from the art of floriography. Floriography, also known as the language of flowers, was widely used during the Victorian era and the first book on this topic was written in French. For this project, I took cues from the typography and colours used in the original cover of the book on floriography. Additionally, I referenced the works of William Morris and Alphonse Mucha to inform my design decisions.

Sammy Spillane MDES GRAPHIC DESIGN

Sammy is a motivated, adaptable and responsible graphic design graduate. She enjoys utilising a wide range of traditional and experimental printmaking techniques to explore and combine with design theory to produce unique and experimental artwork, branding and additional assets.

Sammy’s work is multi-disciplined, able to utilise the professional and technical skills developed throughout her degree and past work experience.

Alongside her investigational and progressive printmaking practice, Sammy is able to

methodically apply her work to fundamental commercial design projects and relishes the process of combining skills to achieve industry standard design and advertising.

During her student tenure, Sammy has proven herself to possess excellent communication skills and thrives when working within a group. Her valuable leadership attributes and strong work ethic have contributed towards her roles of course representative and Sustainability officer for Wrexham Glyndwr University.

@REBELPRINTMEDIA DANIEL-BIRCHALL

Daniel Birchall BA(HONS) GRAPHIC DESIGN

The aesthetics of psychedelia and the countercultural movements that emerged from the 1960s have long been a source of fascination for me as a graphic design graduate. My goal with this work was to incorporate elements connected to the movement and culture that have not been overly emphasized over the past 70 years, while remaining true to the origins and heritage from which they emerged.

The aim was to evoke a sense of nostalgia and familiarity with the intended target audience, while simultaneously attempting to reach beyond the typical consumer and appeal to those curious individuals on the periphery, perhaps looking in. I am interested in the interplay between shape, color, contrast, and forms that manipulate the perception of movement in its absence. Bridget Riley’s op-art paintings have been a source of inspiration that I have referred to multiple times during my creative process.

Adam Skinner BA(HONS) GRAPHIC DESIGN

Over the course of my degree, I have been influenced by a number of sources, with the most notable being the Swiss style of design. The use of sansserif typefaces, an emphasis on photography, and the veneration of the grid have all helped shape my professional practice. As I continue to grow as a designer, my style and creativity evolve as well.

I now place more emphasis on starting a project away from the computer screen and developing work through the use of mixed media, drawing inspiration from designers such as David Carson and Chris Ashworth. My goal with anything I design is to produce something that possesses a distinct sense of character.

Migle Valyte (Migs) BA(HONS) GRAPHIC DESIGN

As a graphic designer, I am fascinated by the power of symbols, subliminal messages, metaphors, and associations in communicating ideas.

My design style emphasizes clean lines, organic shapes, typography, and colour, all while maintaining a balance between simplicity, structure, and playfulness. However, I also enjoy exploring new ideas and experimenting with different styles and techniques.

Design goes beyond aesthetics; it involves problem-solving and fulfilling a purpose. I strive to

create designs that are not only visually appealing but also effectively communicate ideas and messages, positively impact the audience, and convey clarity. I am dedicated to continuous learning and development, with each project serving as an opportunity to challenge myself and create something exceptional. My goal as a graphic designer is to produce designs that satisfy the brief while conveying a clear message and making a positive impact on the viewer.

My passion lies in letterforms, shapes, and the challenge of creating typefaces that have a significant impact on conveying meaning and emotion. I am confident in my ability to produce high-quality typography that is both visually appealing and legible. I am well-versed in the technical aspects of typography, such as kerning, leading, and tracking, and understand how to use these elements to create effective designs.

I have gained extensive knowledge in typography, layout, and design, and am proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. I have experience using typography in both print and digital mediums. In addition to my technical skills, I am a highly creative individual who is always seeking new inspiration and ideas. I am honoured to bring my passion for typography and my design skills to the degree show.

As a children’s book illustrator and writer I remain the fantasist and dreamer I was as a child. As an adult I hope to turn my lifelong ability to stare out of windows and daydream into illustrations and stories others might enjoy. For my illustrations I use ink, charcoal and water colour whilst my writing touches on themes such as imagined space missions, meeting monsters, flying bicycles and dressing up donkeys as unicorns. Even though my stories are absurd they always have an element of lived experience, for instance there’s the tale of when I misplaced my sons beloved bear. (spoiler-Bear is having a terrific time).

My artwork centres around the realm of fantasy, and I am deeply fascinated by games and shows that explore the realms of magic and mythology. My creative journey started with the discovery of Ann Stokes’ art, but my personal style has since evolved to reflect my own artistic sensibilities. Currently, I draw inspiration from various sources, such as World of Warcraft and Umbrella Academy, as well as artists like Echiro Oda, the creator of the manga One Piece. In the future, I aspire to publish my own comics and develop a unique line of dolls.

I want to tell stories that can captivate others. My inspiration comes from cartoons, video games, and comics, which often present wonderful narratives with well-developed characters. These sources of inspiration have motivated me to create my own comic and build a world that showcases the unique characters I have crafted. In particular, I decided to explore the concept of a two-in-one character, as I had never seen this done before. To add further depth to the narrative, I introduced a third character to drive a wedge between the two.

@ECLIPTICBUBBLE

Starting up as an illustrator has given me the chance to explore different avenues of art, with a focus on art piece series being my specialty.

My objective is to produce artwork that is not only uplifting but also allows me to make commentary on various subjects without the result feeling depressing or overly corporate. I use vibrant and bold colours in my artwork to capture the viewer’s attention and my characters are designed with larger heads to emphasize their expressions and emotions.

My artwork caters primarily to a younger demographic, typically those aged 15-25, although individuals with an affinity for fantasy or an interest in animation styles may also be drawn to my work.

My current focus is on depicting mythological creatures, and the sources of my inspiration are quite apparent, including elements of fantasy, animals that serve as the foundation for each creature, video games, whatever I’m obsessed with currently, which changes from minute to minute.

Through my journey as an illustrator, I have always had two key passions, storytelling and narrative. My aim is to bring to life compelling character designs that resonate with the viewer and produce visually stimulating artworks. By combining my proficiency in digital software like Procreate, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator with traditional mediums such as printmaking, watercolour, ink, water-based markers, and brush pens, I am able to breathe life into imaginary subjects and worlds.

Ever since I was a young girl, I have always wanted to be a storyteller. I firmly believe that well-crafted stories and compelling characters possess the remarkable ability to unite us, foster healing, and create a better world for us all. My aim is to convey this concept I hope to bring this concept to through my up-and-coming silent book project, ‘A Tale of Two Dragons’.

My photography practice is mainly focused upon social issues that I feel need attention, things that society and culture as a whole should be made more aware of, the overall aim to be that we empathise and understand one another more. Themes, ideas and inspirations come from a blend of concepts and techniques that I am drawn to through a research process. I predominantly work with others and their personal experiences to create unique portraits

signifying and representing others with dignity but equally educating the audience and bringing awareness to issues not usually considered. Currently I am working on a project reflecting the social perception of fathers. The father has embraced a more maternal approach to parenthood compared to years past, my aim here is to create awareness and alter these perceptions, allowing them to be supported equally to the mother.

Out of Place

Hannah Zervas is a multidisciplinary lens-based artist, working predominantly in photography and film. Drawing on inspiration from her love for the outdoors, Hannah has developed a series of projects that explore the nuanced ways in which humans are interwoven with nature. With diverse influences from the 19th century Pre Raphaelites to contemporary artists, new synergies are born from both traditional and modern narratives.

Out of Place is a creative inquiry exploring rising sea levels and increased global temperatures.

Recent news reports have highlighted 11 localised areas in North Wales that are said to be underwater in as little as 9 years. Weaving through this landscape Hannah visits these areas most susceptible to coastal flooding, and explores the prospect of other extreme weather predictions we will face due to global warming. Hannah’s work seeks to capture the human presence with a temporal and surrealistic approach, exploring the prospect of a new reality, which could mark an epoch in history.
