It was another incredible night of celebrations for all the amazing local businesses that were shortlisted for an award and a proud moment to see many of our Chamber members in the shortlist and going on to win awards. Two of our feature articles this issue are winners of an Adur & Worthing Business Award; one from the Start-Up Business Award Winner, Sam Pewsey from People Finding Consultancy and the other from the Small Business Award Winner, Connect Media you can read their articles on pages 20 and 14.

It’s been a very busy year of events for the Chamber we have hosted 21 events this year and have welcomed just over 2000 people to those events. That’s an incredible turnout and just proves that business in Worthing & Adur really is thriving. If you were not one of those 2000 people make sure you are in 2025! The President’s Column

Icannot believe that 2024 is almost over, the year has flown by, and we have now just celebrated the Adur & Worthing Business Awards, which was a huge success, once again proving that it is the premier awards event in the area.

It is great to see so many Chamber Members in the finalist list and also some wonderful businesses who are not yet Members.

The diversity of businesses that are based in Worthing and Adur always surprises me; we have world class manufacturing businesses that you do not even know are on our doorstep. As well as some amazing professional service providers and fantastic hospitality businesses.

Worthing and Adur’s retail businesses are mostly doing amazingly well in what is a challenging marketplace, but this is down to the entrepreneurial skills that they have, in making sure they survive and flourish.

It is clear when you walk around Worthing and Adur’s shopping areas, that it is a good place to set up your business and we have had high-end brands and some great independent shops opening recently.

You get the same vibe when you visit our industrial estates and see the buzz of success that is being generated, from manufacturing to wholesale and logistics it is just further proof that Worthing and Adur, is a fantastic place to do business.

Worthing and Adur in my view is one of the best places to do business and the number of successful entrepreneurs at the Business Awards together with the number of nominations is a clear sign of this.

No matter what the results on the night, everyone who was nominated, clearly has a good business and the finalists did well to make it to the big night, as for the winners you deserve the recognition that winning will bring you.

Our business, Our story

In this issue we talk to the Connect Media Team

When and how did the business start?

Connect Media is part of L&S Office - a small independent company run by Lee and Sam, who have been trading for 18 years supplying office furniture and supplies nationwide. There was an opportunity to offer a B2B print management service which aligned perfectly with what L&S were already offering, and from that Connect Media was born. Now in our 4th year of trading, Connect Media thrives alongside L&S providing all-encompassing print solutions for businesses.

How has the business grown in its infancy?

Lee, Sam and Ryan started their joint venture in October 2021 and shortly after took on graphic designer Stefy who has been with us for over 2 years. She is a key asset to the team and works closely with some of our biggest clients, continuing to build relationships and creating artwork for all aspects of print. Growth and demand allowed us to take on another team member in January 2024. Katie brought with her 15 years of graphic design and industry experience to the business and has opened up new opportunities and unexplored avenues to broaden our offerings, as well as focusing on marketing and social campaigns.

What challenges have you faced?

Like every business over the last 4-5 years, we have faced a turbulent economy, inflation and general uncertainty within our industry, which has been especially difficult for small businesses in such a competitive market. However, our sensible decision making combined with a team that bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise creates a force ready for anything. We ensure we’re always forward thinking and maximising every opportunity we get to provide the highest standard of products and equally as important, an impeccable service.

Our business, Our story

Is there a particular project of which you are most proud?

We were given the opportunity to provide the supporting printed graphics and merchandise for this year’s Euros. This included team branded event banners, flags and graphics, lanyards and wrist bands for each round England got through to, as well as a variety of printed marketing materials. What was challenging about this project was having to manufacture along the way, depending on whether England got through to the next round or not. This meant extremely tight turnaround times and last-minute decisions, as we eagerly awaited the final score to push the button and go to print! It was worth it to see the final products aired on the television worn by fans, wags and players!

What makes the business work?

The team. Hard work. And integrity. Nothing comes easy without these key attributes. Our team is small, but closely knit and we work hard to make it work - each member of our team has a role to do their utmost for the success of the business. But this is repaid tenfold in celebrating that success, the achievements and milestones, right down to the smallest of wins. We pride ourselves on giving an exceptional experience from the initial enquiry all the way through to the delivery of a product. We build genuine relationships with our clients and are rewarded with repeat business, loyalty and recommendations.

The Insurance available for a Dangerous World

At the risk of stating the obvious the world is currently a dangerous place and unlikely to change anytime soon.

Whether it is the Middle East, Ukraine or other tensions between the western and wider world, the danger is not just in faraway places, as we have seen in recent months overseas conflicts are influencing actions on the streets of the UK, on top of our own simmering strains.

Whilst geopolitical risks and their potential manifestation in the UK are probably not high up on the risk agenda of many small to medium sized businesses, especially in the Worthing area. Terrorism and rioting whatever their underlying cause, are still potential risks and it is surely worth having an awareness as to whether you are protected or could be protected by your insurance policies.

Firstly, it is worth dealing with war risks, which are excluded from most UK insurance policies being deemed, along with nuclear and radiation risks, too big for insurers and hence Government risks. War cover is relevant for staff and goods travelling overseas: Employers Liability policies do not exclude war and whilst Business Travel policies may exclude war between the major powers or within Europe, insurers tend to exclude travel to specific higher risk territories. For either cover, notifying your broker or insurers of

any trips to potential conflict areas would be advisable. Marine policies covering vessels and cargo also usually include war cover (other than nuclear weapons) although becomes expensive/restricted in hotspots like the Red Sea where recent Houthi attacks have occurred.

Riots are legally defined as ‘twelve or more people present together who used or threatened unlawful violence for a common purpose; and that the conduct of them was such as to cause a present person of reasonable firmness to fear for his/her personal safety’. I have rarely had specific conversations about riot cover as there is a general expectation that damage caused by any sort of malicious persons is covered by most policies, which is the case other than terrorism, although partly because of legal definitions insurers still use terminology to also include civil commotion, locked out workers and strikers. Interestingly, where a riot is declared (as in reading the Riot Act) responsibility for any damage falls on the local police force and whilst your insurers will initially pay out, they will look to recover their outlay up to a maximum of £1m from the Police Authorities. Those that are uninsured are also able to claim directly from the police although just because there was rioting in an area does not mean all damage will be deemed

to be from rioting. The Police will consider how the damage was caused building by building to see if falls within the definition and is therefore eligible for compensation.

Finally, there is terrorism insurance that has evolved as a specialist cover in the last few decades after the Government had to take responsibility for terrorist damage in Northern Ireland back in 1977. Insurers continued to provide cover on the mainland until 1993 when insurers restricted cover on commercial property and business interruption risks to £100,000 with a Government backed scheme (Pool RE) set up for policyholders requiring full cover. However, insurers excluded all terrorism cover from most policies following the September 11th attack on the Twin Towers in 2001 and for many years Pool Re was the sole source of terrorism cover, although a few other insurers do now offer cover.

Pool Re’s definition of terrorism, put briefly as ‘any organisation which carries out activities directed towards the overthrowing or influencing by force

or violence of Her Majesty’s government’ and is a relatively ‘low bar’ and probably much wider than most people’s general view of what constitutes terrorist activity ie not just the likes of the IRA or Islamist terror groups, because it brings into play animal rights, environmental and numerous other activist groups.

I have always been surprised at the relatively low take up rate for terrorism cover, which although generally low risk outside of the main cities could still be catastrophic to a business, especially as what is deemed a terrorist incident could involve ‘activists’ as opposed to ‘mainstream terrorism’. There is normally some debate when riots occur as to whether they are politically motivated, hence triggering the terrorism definition and in the past Pool Re have paid claims for damage caused by anarchist groups. Those claimants would have been uninsured without terrorism cover, which is generally available at relatively modest premiums.

Imagine having access to a network of business leaders you can rely on for honest advice, support, and fresh ideas. Better yet, imagine offering that same support to others.

Peer Mentoring could be just what you need!

Worthing & Adur Chamber’s Peer Mentoring programme has been running successfully for 13 years. Each group is made up of business owners from a variety of industry sectors and skills, brought together in a confidential and professionally facilitated environment.

What will Peer Mentoring give you?

• Time to work on (rather than in) your business

• The opportunity to explore challenges in a confidential environment

• A group of like-minded business owners who can become your trusted ‘go-to’s’

• A unique blend of challenge and support from your group

• Suggestions for developing or niching down your business offer

• Explore practical solutions to common business problems

• Increase resilience to manage future challenges.

“I first decided to give Peer Mentoring a go when I was a sole trader looking to expand my business. The group gave me a safe place to air my worries and a monthly ‘board of directors’ to hold me accountable to achieving my business goals bit by bit. Even years later I have strong relationships with my fellow peers that I still use today.

The Chamber’s programme helped me hold on to my business and change it so it suited me better. In fact, I don’t think I’d even be in business without signing up to Peer Mentoring. It has to be one of the best business decisions I have ever made.”

Employment Rights Bill 2024: Key Takeaways for Employers

Following months of wild speculation, the Employment Rights Bill has now been set to parliament, aiming to become law by 2026.

Here is a breakdown of some key proposals:

• Sexual Harassment: Whilst not part of the bill, it did become law in October 2024. Employers now have a proactive duty to prevent workplace sexual harassment. Ensure you have a solid policy, a clear reporting process, conduct a risk assessment and take reasonable action to mitigate these risks.

• Unfair Dismissal Protection. The Bill proposes removing the two-year qualifying period for unfair dismissal claims. Instead introducing a statutory probation period (up to nine months) with more relaxed dismissal protection for employers to assess new employees. To prepare, make sure managers understand and follow fair dismissal processes and set clear performance expectations for new hires.

• Fire and Rehire: Dismissing an employee on the old terms and re-engaging on the new, was occasionally used to push through contractual changes. This practice will be deemed automatically unfair under the new Bill. Review your employment contracts now to check you are comfortable with them, maybe remove some policies or benefits that don’t need to be contractual.

• Day-One Rights: Employees will gain day-one rights for Paternity, Parental, and Bereavement Leave. Statutory sick pay will be payable from the first day of absence.

• Flexible Working: Minimal changes here –employers must justify why they have declined a request, essentially adding a sentence to response letters you already send.

• Collective Redundancy: The Bill removes the “at one establishment” rule. This rule meant that only redundancies at each specific office/site would be used to determine if the collective redundancy threshold had been met. Under the new bill, all of the proposed redundancies across the company will be added together.

• Zero-Hours Contracts: Zero-hours and low-hours workers will need to receive fair notice of shift changes, pay for cancelled shifts, and may be eligible for guaranteed-hours contracts based on work they have done in a defined period. A lot is still to be decided for example the definition of low hours and the length of the defined period, but if you rely on zero-hours contracts, you need to look at the impact this will have on your business.

• Union Rights: Changes make it easier for a union to gain recognition in a businesss and gives them greater access to workplaces. Employment contracts will also need to include a clause informing employees of their right to join a union.

Did You Know?

Kelly O’Haire looks at some of the more interesting things

in and around our local area.

Is there really a Festive Economy?

The short answer is yes! The impact of the festive season on the UK economy is huge. We are expected to spend around £50 Billion on Christmas each year, but how much of this is helping our local businesses? I do shop online, but recently I’ve looked at more local solutions too. We have some brilliant gift shops and retailers in our local area, plus you can still order your food from fantastic local suppliers. In addition, there are excellent craft fairs and festive markets happening throughout the local area at this time of year and loads of them raise much needed funds for charity too. So step away from that screen, go out, enjoy your shopping and support local this Christmas.

Dark nights mean ghostly frights!

We’ve had Halloween and Fireworks night, the clocks have gone back and well, things just get a bit spookier in the winter don’t they? As well as the better known locations for ghostly sightings such as Cissbury Ring, Patching Woods and the banks of the river Adur, there have been many ghostly sightings in offices in our local area too. Liverpool Terrace reportedly has a musical ghost family living at no.7, while the Connaught Theatre has a Grey Lady walking the building and Stoke Abbot Road was once the site of a Convent for Incurables who now wander around Freedom Works! Many of the older buildings in Shoreham have cellars where things are inexplicably moved… Now, where did I put my coffee mug and… wait a minute… who turned out the lights?!

Beat the January Blues before they happen!

It’s the darkest time of the year, most people will be overdoing it in December and clothing could be feeling a bit tight by January! So what can be done about it? Many studies have shown that just a little bit of exercise every day can significantly increase endorphin levels and boost the metabolism. One of the benefits of being a Chamber member is Corporate membership with South Downs Leisure, so why not treat yourself for Christmas? There are hundreds of classes and activities on offer and taking small steps could make a big difference. You could even be doing January Jumps for Joy by the end of the month!

Spotlight on:

I offer a personal and completely bespoke in-house approach to recruitment, dedicated to finding not just any candidate, but the right candidate for your business.

What’s your ‘elevator pitch’?

People Finding Consultancy is a bespoke recruitment service providing a genuinely consultative, relationship-driven approach with businesses for whom every hire is a critical role. In a return to a more personal approach to matching businesses with new team members, I focus on long-term fit and aligning candidates with your business values. I work with you to build strong, lasting teams – not just quick placements – so you can be confident you’re getting the right people, every time.

What’s the best part about your job?

The best part of my job is the moment when I see my clients visibly breathe a sigh of relief, knowing their recruitment is in safe hands. I love seeing that recognition – the confidence that I’ll move heaven and earth to find someone who’s a true fit for both their team and their values. Working closely with founders and business leaders across almost any industry is exhilarating, and building relationships with candidates who know I’m invested in their success – not just placing them in any role – is truly fulfilling.

Who is your dream client?

My dream client is a founder-led, values-driven business in the scale-up phase that values a recruitment partner as much for their understanding of company values as for hiring needs. They’re

passionate about building an exceptional team, believe in the long-term benefits of thoughtful hiring, and, if they’re focused on sustainability and people over profit, that’s the icing on the cake.

How are you developing your business this year?

This year, I’m focused on building brand awareness around my vision to shake up the recruitment industry and provide a better service for both businesses and candidates. I believe the industry has lost its way a little and stopped being about the people it’s supposed to serve.

In pursuit of this goal in my own business, I’m working on streamlining internal processes by automating administrative tasks, freeing more time for conversations with candidates, client consultations and networking.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

In five years, I’d love to see People Finding Consultancy recognised as a trusted recruitment partner for purpose-driven businesses. Ideally, I’ll be offering more one-on-one consultancy for businesses that want guidance throughout the recruitment process but prefer to handle it internally. And I’d like to still be working with local founders, creating meaningful, values-based connections that benefit businesses and candidates alike.

Mastering the Art of Critical Decision-Making: A Strategic Approach

Decision making is essential in leadership, regardless of the nature of your business. Mastering critical decision-making entails not only a thorough analysis of available facts but also the embracement of innate intuition. It’s the interplay between instinct and information that often shapes our ability to make effective progress.

Having formerly managed teams investigating serious crime, this line from The Senior Investigating Officer’s Handbook resonates with me: “Instinctive thought processes can be your best friend or worst enemy”. Before rational thought processes start to form most people feel a degree of instinctiveness about many issues with which they are faced. Aligning instinct and rational thought processes is a skill that can often yield the best possible decisions. To expand, here’s my three-step approach:

Assess what you know:

Consider your existing knowledge, embracing both tangible data and the subtle whispers of intuition. Reflect on past experiences and gut feelings that have guided you. Acknowledge the insights that instinct provides whilst being mindful of potential for bias and ensure your thought process is complemented by factual information.

Identify knowledge gaps:

Recognise the limits of your current understanding. Seek out additional information to complement both factual analysis and instinctual hunches. Curiosity and intuition are guides to help uncover hidden truths and perspectives and provide a more comprehensive view of potential solutions.

Craft a sound rationale:

It’s essential for leaders to synthesise their insights into a coherent rationale that references both facts and intuition. Articulate the factors influencing your decision, weaving together a narrative that integrates rational analysis and intuitive guidance. Ground your decision in the present moment (what you know “at this time”), acknowledging that it is shaped by both tangible facts and subtle instincts. Mastering critical decision-making requires a balanced integration of instinct and information. By assessing what you know, identifying knowledge gaps, and crafting a sound rationale that references both, you can manage the complexities of decisionmaking. Embracing the synergy between instinct and information should empower you to make sound choices and decisions that align with the reality of any given situation.

Autumn Budget 2024: what does it mean for you and your business?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, delivered her first Budget on 30 October 2024. She highlighted Labour’s ambitious plans to tackle the UK’s financial challenges and invest in infrastructure across health, education, housing, and transport.
Our tax team have provided a summary of the key points announced for individuals and businesses.
By

Partner and Head of Tax, Carpenter Box

Individuals

• Capital Gains Tax (CGT): From 30 October 2024 the lower and higher main rates of Capital Gains Tax will increase to 18% and 24% respectively for disposals made on or after 30 October 2024. There’s no longer a secondary higher rate for residential properties as the rates have been aligned.

• Inheritance Tax (IHT): Nil rate bands will be frozen at their present levels until April 2030 (extended by two years from the previously announced date); there is no change to the availability of the additional Residence Nil Rate Band.

• Pension funds: From April 2027 an individual’s pension will be treated as part of their estate for IHT purposes (currently there is no IHT charged, although in some cases a tax charges will apply to lump sums or income drawn by the beneficiary). This may have a considerable impact on the tax and investment planning arrangements of individuals.

• Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT): From 31 October 2024, the Higher Rates for Additional Dwellings (HRAD) surcharge on SDLT will increase from 3% to 5%. The HRAD applies to the purchases of second homes, buy-to-let residential properties and to companies purchasing residential property. Those who exchanged contracts prior to 31 October 2024 will not be affected by this rate increase. The single rate of SDLT that is charged on the purchase of ATED

dwellings costing more than £500,000 by corporate bodies will also increase from 15% to 17%.

• Foreign domiciled individuals: From 6 April 2025, those who are resident in the UK but domiciled overseas will no longer have access to the ‘remittance basis’ of taxation, which up to now has allowed them to elect to not be taxed in the UK on foreign income and gains if they leave the money overseas. There are also significant changes to the assets that will be within charge to IHT for those previously regarded as foreign domiciled, and to Overseas Workday Relief that can exempt them from UK tax on earnings derived from non-UK duties.

• Furnished Holiday Lets (FHL): No further changes were announced in relation to the abolition of the FHL regime. A policy paper and draft legislation were published in July and these were in line with the proposed changes announced by the previous government.

Carpenter Box

Employers

• NLW and NMW: From April 2025 National Living Wage (21+) will increase to £12.21 p/h (from £11.44) and National Minimum Wage (18-20) will increase to £10.00 p/h (from £8.60).

• Employers National Insurance Contributions (NIC): From 6 April 2025 the rate of employers NIC will increase from 13.8% to 15%. The threshold in which employers start paying employers NIC will be reduced from £9,100 per year to £5,000 per year. The Employment Allowance will increase from £5,000 to £10,500 and will be available to businesses whose employers NIC liability exceeds £100,000 (where previously these businesses would not have qualified for the allowance). Employment Allowance is available to ‘eligible employers’ – as such the allowance continues to be unavailable to employers who employ only one person, and that person is a director of the business.

• Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs): There have been some changes made to tighten the rules regarding the taxation in connection with the use of EOTs and business sales. The changes are effective to disposals taking place from 30 October 2024.

Businesses

• Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR) and Investors’ Relief: From 6 April 2025 the rate for BADR and Investors’ Relief will increase to 14% (from 10%) and will increase again to match the lower main rate at 18% from 6 April 2026. The lifetime allowance for BADR remains at £1m. The lifetime limit for Investors’ Relief will be reduced to £1 million for all qualifying disposals made on or after 30 October 2024, matching the lifetime limit for BADR.

• Business Relief (BR) and Agricultural Property Relief (APR): BR and APR provide (at present) an unlimited 100% IHT relief for qualifying assets. It is proposed that 100% IHT relief is given only for the first £1m of BR and APR assets, but thereafter such assets will benefit from 50% relief (i.e. an effective IHT rate of 20%). However, for shares on AIM (and “similar markets”) there appears to be no £1m allowance but 50% relief (i.e. an effective IHT rate of 20%). A technical consultation will be published in early 2025.

• Creative Tax Reliefs: From 1 April 2025, qualifying companies will be able to claim an enhanced AudioVisual Expenditure Credit rate of 39% on their UK VFX costs (increased from 34%). The anticipated exclusion of Generative AI costs from the uplift was not included in the Budget.

• Independent Schools and VAT: The government confirmed that it would be introducing a VAT charge at the standard rate (20%) on education and boarding services, where these are provided by private feepaying schools with effect from 1 January 2025. With effect from April 2024, Independent Schools in England will lose their entitlement to business rates charitable rate relief, unless they “wholly or mainly” provide full time education to pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan.

5 Strategies to Launch Your Marketing in 2025

Start by conducting a quick audit. What did your marketing achieve in 2024? What worked and what didn’t?

Look at key insights such as your conversion rate, customer lifetime value, brand awareness or engagement levels. Put a simple plan in place for 2025 with realistic objectives to ensure that your time and budget are well spent.

Audience

Create new audiences for your product or service, think about HOW your audience buy and play to this rather than WHO they are. With the sharp rise in online purchasing, it’s important to sharpen your digital offering to take advantage. Customers are shopping 24/7 so make sure your business is ready.

Dazzle

Develop dazzling content. There are oodles of digital tools that can help you to create new content, graphics, images and videos, and enhance scheduling and planning. Overhaul your processes and implement new ideas which save time and money.

Track

Track your efforts more effectively. Ensure you are familiar with the free analytics and insights platforms that are available and use them to help your campaigns work smarter and harder for you.

And lastly...

Look at trends for 2025 – there are so many possibilities in our ever-changing world. Have a look at ‘what’s hot’ and think about innovation or what might work best for your business – top tips for 2025 include a continued emphasis on sustainability, voice search, livestreaming and tapping into creator communities.
