The 2nd half of the year means it is time for the Chamber’s annual highlight event, The Better Business Show, and this year it looks like being the biggest and best so far. With lots of local businesses booked to exhibit and many visitors already pre-registered it should be a great event, with lots of new connections and potential business opportunities to be made.
The Chamber Team together with the Events Group work hard to ensure that the Show is always a huge success. The Show cannot happen without the hard work of the Chamber Team, volunteers, sponsors, media and support partners, I would like to thank personally for all that they have done.
We do still have some other exciting events planned for the final half of the year after the Better Business Show, details of them are on the events section of the website.

Mark Bullen, Managing Director of GB Electronics (UK) Ltd
I took over a small-scale family distribution and assembly business in the early 2000s. Back then, we had just five employees, focusing mainly on basic assembly and distribution. However, I saw untapped potential. One of my first strategic moves was recruiting two experienced electronic design engineers, which laid the foundation for our transformation. Recognising an opportunity to expand, we acquired our surface mount assembly sub-contractor. This acquisition allowed us to scale up our manufacturing capabilities and integrate advanced design and support services. Over the years, what began as a modest operation evolved into a comprehensive B2B service provider, bringing new products to market annually and generating impressive growth.
GBE’s growth was driven by a clear vision: building our technology portfolio via product design to manufacturing partnerships aligned with strategic acquisitions and IPR development. We focused on controlling every aspect of the design and manufacturing process to ensure quality and innovation. Acquiring our surface mount assembly (SMA) supplier in 2017 was pivotal; it gave us complete control over production, from rapid prototyping to full-scale manufacturing. This improved lead times and cost efficiency while allowing us to offer a unique full product lifecycle service to clients. We diversified further by forming a SaaS business, extending our IoT and software capabilities, which complemented our design and manufacturing services. Our emphasis on longterm partnerships, coupled with continuous R&D investments and a deep understanding of our clients’ markets, enabled us to offer tailored, sectoragnostic solutions. By immersing ourselves in our clients’ businesses, we have grown into a trusted partner rather than just a supplier.
Navigating rapid technological advancements while maintaining our family-oriented culture as we expanded were two significant challenges. The pace of innovation in manufacturing meant continual investments in new technologies and upskilling our workforce to stay competitive. Balancing this with our commitment to a ‘family business’ ethos was challenging but essential. As
we grew, there was a risk of losing the personal touch that defined our early years. To mitigate this, we actively encouraged a culture where every individual feels valued and empowered to contribute to the company’s success. This approach resulted in low staff turnover and a deeply invested team, a rare asset in our industry.
One project that exemplifies our capabilities is BloodTrack®, a critical patient safety and resource optimising healthcare device originally designed for Neoteric, later acquired by Haemonetics Corporation Inc. BloodTrack® pushed the boundaries of what we thought possible, involving precision engineering and stringent regulatory compliance. We completely upgraded our internal Quality Management System to meet customer audit standards and implemented new features to support Haemonetics further. The result was a reliable device installed in hospitals worldwide (over 800 installations), significantly reducing blood wastage and improving patient safety. This project not only cemented our relationship with Haemonetics but also demonstrated our ability to
deliver complex, high-value solutions that have a real impact on people’s lives.
Looking back, I would tell my younger self to embrace change more readily and trust in the process of growth. There’s a common business cliché that failure is essential to success, but I’ve learned that this perspective needs a caveat. While failing can be a valuable learning experience, when other people’s jobs and livelihoods are at stake, their wellbeing must take precedence. In business, it’s not just about taking risks—it’s about taking responsible risks. This means making decisions that advance the company without jeopardizing the people who have placed their trust in you. Growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, but it’s crucial to do so in a way that aligns with your core values and the well-being of your team. Embracing change while staying grounded in these principles is what drives long-term success.

You do wonder if some people will ever learn. It seems that every other month or so a case hits the headlines, or at least the insurance media, where an insurance fraudster has been caught out on social media.
Back in the day before mobile
phone cameras there was always the odd ‘dodgy’ claimant getting caught out, but that was generally where they were staked out by an investigator, the classic being the claimant attending court using crutches only to walk normally as soon as they were round a corner and thought they were out of sight. Nowadays investigators can often just keep an eye on social media and wait for self-incrimination or the claimant’s friends posting photos on the likes of Facebook.
Numerous examples include the supposedly bedbound claimant seen bungee jumping, the wife who allegedly lost her wedding ring but by chance it magically returned for her social media photos and the male stripper with a bad back who was still able to perform his dance routine!
However, a recent claim has really caught the headlines involving a guy who did suffer significant injuries in a motorcycle accident but after receiving an interim payment of £150,000, suffice to say he ‘milked it’ by claiming another £6.6m in compensation for the likes of luxury cars and business class travel. The investigators got to work and over a period of years discovered that the claimant had recovered
sufficiently to not only be passed fit by his GP for a tandem skydive but to also go climbing and undertake a parachute base jump. The outcome was that a court has dismissed the whole of his claim for fundamental dishonesty with the result that not only will he be prevented from receiving the genuine compensation he was entitled to (estimated at £1.2m by the court), he has also been ordered to repay the £150,000 interim payment and pay legal costs. It is the largest claim to be dismissed for fundamental dishonesty and insurers hope that the decision will act as a deterrent to other would-be fraudsters.
The decision may deter individual claimants, however insurance fraud is such big business to criminal gangs they are unlikely to be put off by the judgement. The cost of fraud to the insurance industry is estimated at £1 billion a year by the Association of British insurers, but that is just detected fraud. Undetected fraud is thought to cost at least the same, if not double.
Much of the insurance fraud involves motor insurance, taking a variety of forms from ‘ghost’ brokers selling non-existent motor insurance online to organised ‘crash for cash’ gangs deliberately staging ‘hit in the rear’ accidents. Personal injury claims are then made by the passengers, some of whom miraculously appear after the event.
Crash for cash has also now developed into a lower level ‘clip for cash’ scams against individual drivers rather than the insurers, where drivers are accused of clipping an already damaged wing mirror, often accompanied by an appropriate sound, with cash then demanded upfront to avoid going through the driver’s insurers.
Fraud is a major issue to the industry with the cost passed on to policyholders but in reality, it is primarily down to the insurers to solve or mitigate, with a limit as to what a company (as a policyholder) can do about many of these scams.
That said, there are some obvious points. Certainly not driving too close to the vehicle in front helps as does arranging insurance cover via reputable sources such as an insurance broker. Simple instructions for drivers involved in an accident can help. This is to fully record all information at an accident scene by
taking photos of damage to all vehicles involved and physically checking (and being seen to check), then recording the number of passengers in the other vehicle(s), and whether they have complained of any injuries.
Aside from motor accidents, personal injury claims in the workplace will generally involve employees but for contracting companies may involve the public and again recording information at the time of the event, when this is possible, is vital and can assist your insurer when claims occur. It is also worth monitoring the claimant’s social media after the event and we certainly have experience of claims where there has been suspicions that something wasn’t quite right, albeit not as blatant as some of the examples mentioned earlier. If you feel there is a hint of anything ‘dodgy’ it should be reported to your insurers.

Worthing and Adur is a brilliant part of the world in which to live, work and just be! But what do you really know about our part of the world?
Kelly O’Haire shares some interesting and unusual facts and figures.
Did you know that Shoreham (or, as it is now known, Brighton City) Airport is the oldest licensed airfield in the UK and the oldest purposebuilt commercial airport in the world still in operation? Aviator, Harold H Piffard, was the first to fly there in 1910, the aerodrome opened in 1911 and the first flying school opened in 1913. You can still have flying lessons there today, as well as very nice lunch in the Grade II* listed Terminal building, it’s well worth a visit.
Although Iron age settlers mined flint on the south downs and Romans had villas throughout the area, it is the Normans who still show their mark on the towns of Worthing and Shoreham today. Anyone visiting Tarring can’t fail to miss the Old Palace, which was originally built by the Archbishops of Canterbury at the end of the Norman period and is supposed to have been stayed in by Thomas A’Becket in the 12th century. In Shoreham the beautiful St Mary de Haura church was founded shortly after the Norman conquest and is one of the most historically significant and architecturally impressive churches in West Sussex.
One of Lancing’s most unappreciated gems in Widewater Lagoon. It may look like the sea has got stuck between the houses and the prom but in fact it’s a rare brackish (meaning a mix of fresh and saltwater) eco system that supports a diverse range of birds and other wildlife, as well as plants. The Lagoon is designated as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI), recognising its importance for wildlife and its relatively undisturbed natural habitat. This status helps protect the area from development and other potential threats.
Worthing
& Adur Chamber
has
a charitable fund
called the ‘Worthing & Adur Fund’, in partnership with Sussex Community Foundation, a charity that develops and supports local giving.
The Fund was set up in 2009 by the Chamber and a number of local businesses who were founder donors, each giving a minimum of £1,000. These donations established a core endowment fund, the income from which, as it has grown, has enabled the Fund to make grants to many small charities and community groups worthing in Worthing and Adur.
The projects supported this year:
Adur Special Needs Project is an Ofsted inspected play scheme for young people aged 5-15 with a range of special educational needs and disabilities in West Sussex. They operate every other Saturday during term time offering a variety of activities designed to develop confidence, enhance communication, and build friendships. They were awarded £1,700 from the Adur & Worthing Fund towards running costs.
Lancing United Football Club is a sports club providing football for players, coaches, and spectators from Under 5s to Men Senior. They were awarded £2,000 towards equipment and decoration of their new sensory room providing a quiet space for supporters with Autism and their families.
Soundcastle supports vulnerable communities through transformational music programmes that increase confidence, enhance wellbeing, and bring people together. People’s Music activity takes place in a cross-sector partnership between Soundcastle, Sussex Recovery College, NHS Sussex Partnership, and adults with mental ill health. Most members join at a critical stage in their recovery. They were awarded £1,000 towards staffing costs.
Worthing Table Tennis Club offers inclusive and accessible Table Tennis to all who wish to play no matter your background or ability, including coaching, competition, and social sessions for all ages in a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment. They were awarded £578 for bats and balls for the club.

As a social media expert and trainer, one of the questions I get asked the most is ‘do I need a LinkedIn company page’? The answer is nearly always ‘yes’!
Your LinkedIn company page is a free resource that, if used properly, can really showcase the best of what a company has to offer. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? A distinctive company page can be used as a ‘hub’ for all company news, no matter what size the business is. This ‘hub’ can then be followed and shared by all interested parties, such as employees, clients and business contacts etc.
The top 5 things to cover when creating/updating your company page These may be obvious to most seasoned LinkedIn users, but it still amazes us just how many personal and company pages we see that are missing key information. As with most things in life, get the basics right and a good starting point will be had by all.
Speaking as a company is different to speaking as an individual. Think ‘3rd person’ when writing posts as a company.
Make them look as professional as possible. Yes, professional photography is still always best BUT mobile phones are brilliant these days. When taking pictures and using them, think ‘what do you want it to say about your company?’
Don’t forget your header and find a template for the correct page header size. Try using design software like Canva, which is a really affordable resource. There is also loads of free online help. Also don’t forget that you can update it to reflect different messages.
Use a square logo as the company page thumbnail - you can change this to promote different brands if you have them.
You could design your company colours into your header and posts to make them easily recognisable.
Many company pages are missing this. You only have 120 characters, so keep it short and refresh it every now and then if you want to.
Make sure you include a link to your website, or choose a key landing page if you want to promote something specific such as a new product or service.
Of course, if this is another thing on top of an already time-consuming social media schedule, then maybe think about getting help to run it. Dormant social media feeds are almost worse than having none at all! We are here to help at Constructive Marketing, for more information visit www.constructivemarketing.co.uk

The core service is the remote monitoring and support of your PC equipment and printers, including backups. Alongside this we have consultancy services covering Microsoft 365 services, cyber security including Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, website design and implementation and general IT strategy.
The best part of my job is the diversity, and I get to learn new things every week. We have a wide range of clients including financial services, estate agents, garages, charities to name a few. Although many of the challenges they face are the same, I really enjoy getting to know the individual businesses so that I can tailor our services to suit them. Week to week I could be setting up the systems for a new customer, troubleshooting network issues at another, performing a cyber security audit at a third.
Our dream client is a small business that has grown to have multiple employees and that needs to control their expanding IT estate. They recognise that IT is a key part of their business, but also that they need professional help to maximise their investment. They will also be aware of the risks to their business from cyber security threats.
We have ambitious plans to grow this year, so have taken on another technician to help support our growing client base and an admin assistant to take over the internal business processes. We are focussing more on our marketing and will be exhibiting at the Better Business Show again this year as well as at local networking events.
In 5 years, we plan to be at least three times the size we are now both in terms of clients and in terms of employees. This will give us the ability to recruit a broader range of skills to better support our clients and give us even more opportunities for growth.

Lainy Russell, founder of Flourish and new Member of Worthing and Adur Chamber shares her top tips on managing difficult conversations.
ost of us already feel annoyed at how much time and energy a difficult situation takes up and in some cases causes loss of sleep too. We cannot take that energy into the meeting, so we need to unpick the human dynamics, one at a time and re-educate ourselves so we can influence and control conversations (even the most challenging). Managing our thoughts and behaviour is truly a game changer!
Before the conversation is even in the diary, we have already set a number of invisible things in motion that will influence the interaction. Here are just three to think about.
1. 2.
Your thoughts about the meeting; dread, fear or apprehension. Our thinking gets highjacked by a very normal biological response, we imagine the worst outcome, or we may catastrophise.
• We need to go there; plan for the worst to help quieten our mind, train yourself to stay calm in speech and behaviour by being prepared.
You plan what you are going to say, but often that goes out the window.
• You planned for you, not them! We unwittingly plan for our reactions and triggers, BUT the information is for someone else’s brain. Get to know as much about them as possible.
3.
Schedule best time and place
• You meet where you are most comfortable. If they are not at ease, feeling unsafe or intimidated, they will be in the wrong place in their brain before you even begin. A cornered animal comes out spitting and scratching!

As a business owner, you need to have a clear understanding of the financial health of your company. This is where management accounts
come in. Management accounts are a set of financial reports produced periodically that provide insights into the performance of your business. They are an essential tool for decision-making and can help you stay on top of company finances.
By Joshua Bowen, Head of Outsourced Finance Function, Carpenter Box
What is the difference between management accounts and statutory accounts?
Management accounts are a set of bespoke financial reports designed specifically for your business with the primary focus being to evaluate performance and assist with decision-making within your organisation. They’re prepared promptly after the period end to provide timely insights into your business’s financial performance, allowing you to take proactive actions to achieve your goals.
In contrast, statutory accounts are prepared annually and are intended for use by external stakeholders, such as investors, creditors, and regulatory authorities. They must comply with accounting standards and provide a comprehensive overview of your company’s financial position, including detailed notes and disclosures.
In summary, management accounts offer real-time insights for strategic decision-making, while statutory accounts serve as a formal financial statement for external stakeholders.
But what exactly should you include in your management accounts? Let’s dive into the key elements that make up effective management accounts.
At the heart of your management accounts is the Profit and Loss (P&L) statement. This financial report shows your company’s revenue, costs, and expenses over a specified period. It provides a clear picture of whether your business is generating a profit or incurring losses. Analysing your P&L statement allows you to identify trends, assess the impact of cost fluctuations, and make informed decisions to improve profitability.
A Balance Sheet is another critical component of management accounts. It provides a snapshot of your company’s financial position at a specific point in time. It lists your assets, liabilities, and equity, allowing you to gauge your business’s overall financial health. A well-prepared balance sheet can help you assess solvency, track working capital, and make informed decisions regarding investments and debt management.
Managing cash flow is vital for the sustainability of your business. A Cash Flow Statement is a key element of management accounting, illustrating how cash is flowing in and out of your business. It highlights the sources of cash (e.g., sales, investments) and the uses of cash (e.g., operating expenses, debt repayments). By closely monitoring your cash flow, you can identify potential liquidity issues and take corrective actions to ensure your business’s financial stability.
In my opinion, a budget is one of the most important documents a management team can have in place. Without a budget you are essentially going into a trading period without knowing what you consider to be good / bad performance for the business. Comparing to comparative periods is useful but just doing better / worse than the previous period doesn’t mean a good / bad performance as there are several factors that should be considered. To gauge your financial performance accurately, a detailed budget vs actual report should be included within your management accounts. This report compares your actual financial results against the budgeted amounts. It allows you to identify variances and assess whether you’re on track to meet your financial goals. If there are significant deviations, you can adjust your strategies and allocate resources more effectively to align with your business objectives.
Incorporating Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) into your accounts is crucial for monitoring the performance of specific areas of your business. KPIs are metrics that measure the effectiveness of various aspects, such as sales, production, or customer satisfaction. By tracking KPIs, you can identify strengths and weaknesses within your business and make data-driven decisions to optimise operations and drive growth.
It is important to note that KPIs do not need to be financial, and in my opinion the best KPI metrics are ones that consider both financial and non-financial metrics.
By including these elements in your management accounts, you’ll have a clear understanding of your company’s financial performance and be able to make informed decisions to drive growth.
At Carpenter Box, we specialise in providing management accounts to small and medium-sized businesses. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help you prepare effective management accounts and take control of your finances.

Purchasing a property is undoubtedly one of the most significant financial decisions you’ll make in your lifetime.
When it comes to conveyancing, home buyers have hundreds, if not thousands of firms to choose from across the UK.
At Bennett Griffin, we know that having the right team by your side, especially a knowledgeable local solicitor, can make all the difference.
But what advantages do local property solicitors really have over national counterparts?
Here’s why we think choosing a local conveyancer is a wise choice.
Local solicitors bring an invaluable asset to the table - deep knowledge of the area.
This encompasses understanding local planning, future development prospects, environmental concerns specific to the region, and even the history of particular properties.
This insight can be pivotal in making informed decisions and navigating the complexities of the local property market.
For example, our solicitors recently worked with a client who was moving to West Sussex from London. They were concerned about Radon, a naturally occurring gas common to the area. We carried out an environmental search on the property being purchased and advised on the findings.
We helped another client selling a property in Ferring. As we have local knowledge, we are aware
that certain roads in Ferring are maintained by Ferring Roads Scheme Association (FRSA). As we knew this, we approached the organisation to get a maintenance pack to quickly progress the sale.
Working with a local solicitor offers unmatched flexibility when it comes to appointments.
Being in close proximity allows for easier scheduling of face-to-face meetings, which can be crucial for discussing sensitive or complex matters.
Bennett Griffin LLP understands the value of your time and strives to accommodate your schedule, offering a more personalised service approach.
Local solicitors have the advantage of being familiar with local courts and administrative practices.
This experience can be beneficial, especially if your property transaction involves any legal complexities.
Having a solicitor who understands the intricacies of local legal systems ensures a smoother, more efficient conveyancing process.
Choosing a local firm like Bennett Griffin LLP means receiving a level of personal service that larger firms might struggle to match.
Our team is dedicated to building strong, trusting relationships with our clients, ensuring you feel valued and understood throughout the process.
At Bennett Griffin, we pride ourselves on combining local expertise with a commitment to excellence in all aspects of residential property conveyancing.
Choosing the right solicitor is a critical step in the property-buying process.
If you are considering buying a property in West Sussex and want to know how Bennett Griffin can help, contact our team today.
Our local property solicitors can be found in our Worthing office at 1 Liverpool Gardens, opposite the public car park.
You can call us on 01903 229999 or email info@bennett.griffin.co.uk and a member of our team will reply to you shortly.
