International Day of Peace Celebrations 2016

On 21 September every year, the International Day of Peace is celebrated around the world. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution 36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September.

The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982. This anniversary offers a unique opportunity to reaffirm the United Nations commitment

to the purposes and principles upon which the organization was founded.

The Declaration on the Right of Peoples to Peace recognizes that the promotion of peace is vital for the full enjoyment of all human rights.

The day’s theme for 2016 was “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.” The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations at an historic summit of the world’s leaders in New York in September 2015. The new ambitious 2030 agenda calls on countries to begin efforts to achieve these goals over the next 15 years. It aims to end poverty, protect the planet, and en-

sure prosperity for all. The Sustainable Development Goals are integral to achieving peace in our time, as development and peace are interdependent and mutually reinforcing.

World Scouting has always thrived to contribute to peaceful coexistence.

WOSM is clearly giving the direction for ‘Creating a Better World’ through its vision. More than ever before, World Scouting is now having extensive focus on peace education and peace building through a flagship initiative of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) WOSM, the ‘Messengers of Peace’ (MoP).

have received a new boost in World Scouting since 2011, when the MoP Initiative was launched. The MoP initiative has two components, the MoP Support Fund and the MoP Global Network.

Nevertheless, the easiest way to promote and create a replication effect is with the support of social media.

Through the Support Fund, MoP offers support and resources especially for those National Scout Organizations (NSOs) of WOSM in need of such support to help start projects and initiatives for their Scouts to be engaged in peace building. The Global Network of MoP aims to reach out to 20 million Scouts coming from all corners of the world to gather through internet communities and to inspire each other as individuals and in small local groups, to engage in small actions of social services and peace building in their local communities.

The objectives for these activities were:

The MoP Network’s members, from time to time, share these achievements on the internet, thereby continuing to inspire others and creating a ripple effect. Through these initiatives, peace is defined in broad terms, not just from the perspective of the absence of war, but more so to have a strong, cohesive society, working together to co-exist peacefully for what they see as best for their future.

WOSM called for all Scouts to take action to commemorate the International Day of Peace and to promote and spread the message of peace. As part of the Better World framework (embracing the MoP, World Scout Environment Programme and Scouts of the World Award), Scouts were informed to be inspired, learn, and decide on their actions to foster the culture from local to the world level.

The period of the peace activities was the whole month of September 2016, not just limited to International Peace Day that was celebrated on 21 September 2016.

The main purpose of the activities is to promote action in the field, raise awareness and get Scouts involved in interaction with non-Scouts to talk about peace culture.

1) raising awareness related to peace culture in communities and the importance of each individual in the development of Peace Culture, 2) inducing and support Scouts to talk about peace with other Scouts, non Scouts and community members, and 3) commemorating the International Day of Peace 2016 through the active involvement of Scouts with the community.

In celebrating this day, the Asia Pacific Region also highly participated and promoted this day through different sources i.e. on the scout.org and other social media.

Many of the NSOs around the region and world participated in different social media, which can found on scout.org, world MoP Facebook page and the APR MoP Facebook Pages. Planting trees, books for all, pledging for service hours, clothing the globe, peace road show, peace run, enrolling new Scouts and peace gatherings etc. were the main activities suggested to celebrate the international peace day.

The ultimate place to share is www.scout. org, MoP Pages on Facebook and related social media where the Scouts were asked to post about their peace activities.

Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Training for the Asia Pacific Support Centre Through the support of MoP initiative, the APSC organized a 4-day training for all of the staff of the APSC and local staff of Boy Scout of Philippines (BSP).

The training was undertaken from 11-14 September 2016 in Cagayan De Oro, Philippines.

Better World Module at the 7th National Scout Venture Camp, Maasin City, Philippines Boy Scouts of Philippines (BSP) organized the National Venture Camp in 25-29 September in Maasin City, Leyte, Philippines. The camp offered the Better World Module for Scouts, in which BSP organized activities for Messengers of Peace, World Scout Environment Program, Scouts of the World and other partnership programs i.e.

Scouts Go Solar and Liter of Light.

Almost all regions of the BSP sent participants to the camp. Activities happened at one big station in the form of sub-stations which enabled the Scouts to understand the interlink among world program under one umbrella called Better World Frameworks.

Big success of MoP Project “Development of Scouting in Myanmar�

The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) welcomes Myanmar Scouts -- the National Scout Organization of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. WOSM currently has a total of 164 National Scout Organizations in more than 220 countries and territories around the world.

Scouting was introduced in Myanmar since the 1950s and was disbanded in 1964. Membership before disbandment was over 100,000. Since the redevelopment of Scouting started in 2012, current membership is approximately 25,000.

The Union of Burma Boy Scouts was a full member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in the early 1950s. They were active and had complied with their constitutional duties.

Local MoP Coordinators Meet - Thailand NSO Coordinator for MoP in National Scout Organization of Thailand Mr. Poldej Worchat took the leadership in assembling for the first time local MoP coordinators in Thailand by 2-3 July 2016.

The objective of this meeting was to train the local Scout Leaders in the promotion of the MoP in Thailand so that the message of peace could be spread across Thailand.

Around 30 participants attended this event.
