FROM THE REGIONAL OFFICE Finnish helps deliver quality Scouting in Africa

KENYA - When the Finnish Voluntary Programme ETVO was searching for a volunteer to the World Scout Bureau - African Regional Office in Nairobi, I saw my chance had come to work and live in Kenya which has been my dream for a long time. Over one year after the application process, I am finally working at ARO in the Development Support Department. My background is in Scouting, different NGO's, sociology and traveling. My previous work, volunteer and educational experience combined with my interests in environmental issues, human rights, equality and peace makes this internship at ARO very interesting for me. My work tasks include for example assisting in the coordination of the Food for Life – projects. Moving to Kenya and working as a volunteer requires flexibility, saving money and planning the budget. I am very glad I took the chance to experience a new culture and adventure. I have been a Scout over 15 years participating in many different activities, positions and courses. One of my best Scouting experiences so far has been taking part in the Wood Batch training and finishing my development project successfully. Personally, the most important things for me in Scouting have always been communality and close relationship to the nature. I believe it is essential that Scouting is open for everybody no matter the status in society, religion, sexual orientation etc. Scout movement is a youth movement and I strongly believe in the education and leadership of young people. With the method of learning by doing, young people have space for their individual development and growth. Adults play a big but only supportive and guiding role in Scouting – it is the young people, girls and boys from all over the world, who can change this world to a better place. – By Susanne Nylund

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Memorable quote

Life skills for Ghana Scouts

"...Let the next three months be a time, not for mourning because MADIBA lived his life to the fullest to leave us a model but also a challenge, but rather and foremost a time for reflection and Scout actions to pay tribute to the defender of human dignity. Let us gather in our patrols, teams, schools, neighbourhoods, on scout.org Facebook, etc. to share our initiatives and let us make of them the springboard of good intentions and actions, as well as prayers that accompany the soul of MADIBA to the divine and eternal rest..."

GHANA - The Ghana Scout Association, as a youth movement with a structured training programme is committed to ensure that, every Scout must understand and be able to apply the principles of map reading and first aid. With this in mind, the Ghana Scout Association sought out the expertise of the Ghana Armed Forces to train Adult Scout Leaders on these vital skills from the 9th – 20th December 2013.

- Frederic Tutu Kama-Kama, Regional Director, World Scout Bureau - Africa Regional Office

This training of trainer’s course dubbed “MR.FAT” was held at the Ghana Military Academy for 24 Adult Scout Leaders from the National Headquarters, Greater Accra Region, Eastern Region, Brong Ahafo Region, Ashanti Region and the Northern Region. STAY IN TOUCH! This aspect of the practical session helped Scouts to experience how the features look like on the ground as compared to that of the map. However, all Scouts were assessed based on written exams on Map Reading and relevant topics. The course on First Aid was very practical. Participants were taken through; Introduction to First Aid, Personal and Field Hygiene, Dealing with Unconscious Casualty and Clearing an Obstructed Airway, Exhale Air Resuscitation, Hemorrhage, Wounds, Treatment of Snake and Dog Bites, Burns and Scalds, Fractures, Improvised Splints and Bandages, Uses and Carriage of Stretchers, Composition of a First Aid Box and its uses, etc.
