ICYMI: In Case You Missed It In February, we held our Returning Citizens Career and Resource Fair. We had multiple employers ready to hire applicants.

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

INTERVIEW WITH THE WORKFORCE: KAREN AND RANONA DESCRIBE HOW THE WORKFORCE HAS CHANGED Karen and Ranona have experienced multiple changes in the workforce over their time with Workforce Services of Will County. They have 75 years' worth of experience between the two of them, with Karen celebrating 33 years and retirement soon. Ranona celebrates her 42nd year and retirement within the next 12 months.

Ranona and Karen describe the changes they've experienced. This includes seeing more women in leadership positions having their third female director in their time here, Michelle Stiff. They described seeing more women in trades like welding, carpentry, or CDL, which were previously male-dominated fields.

"I remember when I was in school, my options were teacher or nurse," described Ranona. "There just weren't many options for women. My dad really wanted me to be a teacher, but he also made sure to teach me things about cars and things."

We're like a family.

I'll always remember the friendship

"I've seen a lot of big changes, and women aren't afraid to be respected in their fields and prove themselves," describes Karen.

Karen describes the importance of educating children and even young adults about the different career paths while still in elementary or high school.

She describes the importance of creating new traditions, including teaching girls about careers for male-dominated industries, and that these options exist for them as well.

Ranona adds that women have much more independence than they did in the past. "Sometimes, women would only be able to live off of their husband's social security if they had unexpectedly passed away, and it was sad. We see so much less of that now, and I'm glad."

With both workforce services professionals retiring soon, they reminisce about old times. "We sometimes finish each other's sentences," Karen laughed. "In the past, they would put us in the same office because we would yell down the hall to each other."

Karen is scheduled to retire on April 29, 2022, while Ranona will be retiring on March 1, 2023.

"We're like a family. I'll always remember the friendship," Ranona finished.
