Welcome to the first issue of Masterpiece – a magazine dedicated to God’s incredible design and purpose for each woman of the Blairsville, Georgia, area and their babies.

You may have heard the old country saying, “I’m me, I’m wonderful, ’cuz God don’t make no junk.” Well, not only does God not “make junk,” He has fearfully and wonderfully made you. His works are wondrous. You are God’s Masterpiece, and so is every baby He has created! That is the driving focus of WEC Family Resources.

Our Center started as the Appalachian Area Crisis Pregnancy Center in July 1991. During the growing phases of the ministry, the Center focused on single women in crisis pregnancies. The Center helped women to make a choice they could live with.

From that beginning, our focus has grown. We still help preserve life by offering assistance to those in crisis, but we don’t stop there. We also help moms and dads become better parents. We help with the material resources needed to raise healthy babies and small children.

Through the years, we started using the name Woman’s Enrichment Center. Why “woman’s” rather than “women’s”?

Our emphasis was on the importance of reaching one woman at a time and helping her in her time of crisis. People soon started calling us WEC, and the name stuck.

Over time, we realized that helping one woman at a time required helping her entire family. We put that realization into our name by becoming WEC Family Resources in 2020. We now offer life coaching, marriage coaching, and coaching for men. We also help grandparents raise grandchildren, and we’re able to assist foster families as well.

The Lord has done so many wonderful things through WEC Family Resources. Babies have been saved from abortion.

Moms have learned they can count on people who listen to them and truly hear what is going on in their lives. The staff and volunteers are ready to show God’s love to families, whether in crisis or for whatever brings them through our doors.

We have five staff members, 15 volunteers, and six people on our Board of Directors. We are here to serve. We share the love of our Lord by offering the Baby Boutique Diaper Bag Ministry to our pregnant moms; the Children’s Shoppe for all in need of infant to 5T clothing plus maternity wear; and toiletries.

We offer formula and baby food – and, of course, diapers, too. Our educational opportunities and classes include topics on pregnancy, childbirth, God’s truths and special Bible studies, and better parenting and life skills.

Another way we are able to help is through our resources and referrals. Our resources have opened a pathway for our center and our community to join forces in meeting needs. This program is called Community Connections. Our community can share what their services are and how they’re able to assist someone in need.

Through all the change, one thing has remained: the sanctity of life is still our main focus. We still believe each person is beautifully and wonderfully made.

KIM’S STORY

Turning From Fear and Doubt to Courage and Confidence

“To tell you the truth, I think I just blacked out.

I didn’t know where to turn.” The blackout at the beginning of Kim’s story was not a physical loss of consciousness. It was a mental sense of complete disorientation and confusion. Her situation seemed hopeless.

When most people think of abortion and the life of the unborn, the focus is on the mother and the unborn child. But an overlooked cause of abortion is not centered on a woman and her baby. It is on the decision-making ability of the men in their lives.

More and more studies are showing that the decisions men make have a bigger impact on women and their view of sexuality and children than any other environmental factor. For instance, a recent study published in the journal Developmental Psychology shows the important role good dads play in preventing their daughters from engaging in risky sexual behavior.

The study revealed that daughters who spent more time in quality relationships with their fathers were less likely to engage in risky sexual behavior. They also were less likely to hang out with peers who engaged in such behavior. The simple decision by a father to spend meaningful time with his daughters helps to insulate them from the kinds of behaviors that lead to unplanned pregnancies.

Melvin Konner, of The Wall Street Journal, covered the study from a scientific perspective. He wrote, “Biologists find that organisms in unstable environments grow up faster and start reproducing earlier than those in stable ones.” In other words, the more stability a father provides for his wife and children, the less likely they are to engage in risky, “unstable” behavior. Stability breeds stability. But how do men create a stable environment for their children?

So the solid foundation men must build their lives on is the teachings of Jesus. While many Christians believe salvation is all that men need to build a house on a solid foundation, Jesus said it’s not just hearing His words that’s important, doing them is a vital part of it. The writer of Hebrews agrees. Hebrews 6:1 says, “Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity....” In other words, salvation is just the start. Men have to move on to maturity. And maturity is growing in God’s word and using it to make life’s decisions on a daily basis.

Men have to be stable in their relationship with God in order to demonstrate to their children how stable relationships work. When men don’t have that stable relationship with God, they make decisions that appeal to their sinful desires – and relationships suffer.

Daily Decisions Impact Abortion Rates The decisions men make show what their foundation is.

And until we can teach men to effectively make biblical decisions, abortion will continue.

How Men Build Stable Lives The answer lies in how the man builds his own life. Men who build their lives on an unstable foundation will find their lives – and the lives of those around them – crashing down in difficult times. But men who build their lives on a stable foundation will be able to provide the stability their family needs.

Jesus said there’s only one stable foundation men can build on that will weather the storms of life. He said in Matthew 7:24-27, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Take Tim (not his real name), for example. Twenty years ago, he made the decision to sleep with his thengirlfriend. Unbeknownst to Tim, his girlfriend of two years became pregnant with his child. She decided to abort the child – also without Tim’s knowledge.

“I called her to check in with her and she told me that she had gotten pregnant by me and that she had had an abortion without telling me. That was very hard for me to hear and to take because I didn’t get a chance to discuss it with her before she made that decision,” he says.

Tim says he would have asked his girlfriend to reconsider if he had been given the chance. He would have asked her to continue with the pregnancy. In fact, he would have gladly raised the child by himself if she didn’t want any involvement.

“She didn’t allow that to happen, which I think is very unfair,” he says. And now, almost two decades later, Tim is “still sad about it.”

Many would say the decision to have an abortion was his girlfriend’s decision. But, as bad as that decision was, she never would have been in a position to make it had Tim

made the biblical decision to not sleep with her until they were married. Tim loved his girlfriend. But these events ruined their relationship.

Men Who Support Abortion Suffer Spiritually, Emotionally, Psychologically, and Practically The impact of men’s poor decision making that leads to abortion is a growing area of study and concern.

There are more than 28 informative studies on how abortion affects men and how they react to abortion.

One study showed that most men feel overwhelmed.

The study also showed that men experience disturbing thoughts of the abortion (Shostak & McLouth, 1984).

Other studies suggest that men are less comfortable expressing their feelings of grief and loss. They’re less vulnerable. As a result, they become passive, saying nothing, or become hostile, letting bitterness and anger lead to violence. It also affects how men handle relationships in the future.

One study looked at how abortion impacts relationships (Coleman, Rue & Spence, 2007a). This

study said that there were four ways it can affect men and their relationships. (1) Abortion can cause men to intellectualize grief, cope alone, and exert greater control over the expression of painful emotions. (2) Abortion can cause men to identify their primary role as that of supporting their partners, even after an abortion. This was true even if they opposed the decision. (3) Men are more likely to experience feelings of despair long after the abortion than women. And (4) men are more at risk for experiencing chronic grief.

Since men are less likely to talk about their emotions, this chronic grief turns them inward and prevents them from developing deep, meaningful relationships.

For the men who pressure or encourage the women they care about to have an abortion, the emotional issues can be even bigger. They often have troublesome feelings that can emerge later on.

These men can pay a great emotional price once they recognize the reality of what an abortion is and how it has affected their partners. Their decisions haunt them.

Interestingly, one study (Linacre Q. August, 2015; 82(3): 273–282) found that when married people use abortion as a form of birth control, it doubles their risk of having a divorce. The researchers concluded: “Abortion seems to have a destructive effect on the marital bond.”

And the only thing the study found to counteract this increased risk was church attendance and building the relationship on the biblical model of “communication, self-control, and mutual motivation.” In other words, it’s never too late for men and women to turn to God and begin to build their foundation on Him. While overturning Roe v. Wade is important, we will never win the battle over abortion until men turn their hearts toward God and do His will. When men build stable lives on the Rock, they can stop abortion from happening. Most pregnancy centers have male counselors available to help men find the stability God offers.

Every Abortion Involves at Least One Man A few years ago, I was asked to speak at a Baylor University chapel service. And while there were a lot of things I wanted to say to the students, what I felt compelled to let them know was what happened to me there. I told them that I came to the school to get a Christian education, but what happened is that I got a girl pregnant – and I paid for her to have an abortion.

I didn’t fully grasp what I had done until about three days later. That’s when it really hit me. This shame just came over me.

I had destroyed the life of my own child.

More honesty required

And I just – I just couldn’t believe it. There was nothing I could do to reverse it or undo it. It was done. I felt like I had sinned too much, gone too far. God could never use me, never forgive me.

There was no funeral, no way to grieve, no one I could talk to. The silent shame started ripping through me, and I had so many ulcers that I ended up in the hospital.

A few days after I shared my story with the Baylor students, I received a phone call from the young lady I had been involved with. And she said, “I heard you told our story at Baylor Chapel.”

“Yes,” I said. “You know, I – I hope I did it in a way that no one would know that you were the person.”

“Oh, no, that’s not a problem,” she said. “I heard you said that you paid for the abortion.”

“Yes,” I said. “I wanted them to believe that I was responsible.”

“The next time you tell it,” she said, “maybe you should be a little more honest.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Well, you didn’t just pay for the abortion,” she said.

“You pressured me to have that abortion. You made sure I knew that you wouldn’t be there for me or for our baby that I wanted to bring into this world. You pressured and you pressured. So I just did it because I didn’t think I had a choice.”

I didn’t marry her. Years later, I married, and we very quickly discovered that we were an infertile couple.

We could not have children. Seven years and thousands of dollars worth of trying, but every Mother’s Day was worse than the Mother’s Day before.

Then some Christian comes up to me and says, “Have you ever thought maybe that the reason you can’t have children is because you paid for an abortion when you were in college?” As if I didn’t have enough shame and regret! That person, of course, would have me believe that every bad thing in my life is a result of the abortion, and I was just getting what I deserved – that

I’ve learned that the man’s role doesn’t end once a baby is conceived. The man’s role is to provide for and protect the life he’s created.

When you don’t do that, and then you move to destroy that life … well, that was a tough reality to face.

Well, it was pretty tough to hear just what a coward I had been! When that wonderful young lady and my baby needed me to be a man, I had been anything but.

Facing reality I’ve learned that the man’s role doesn’t end once a baby is conceived. The man’s role is to provide for and protect the life he’s created. When you don’t do that, and then you move to destroy that life … well, that was a tough reality to face.

I should be willing to experience anything as a result of that shameful thing that I did.

The unspoken shame of abortion shows up in so many areas, and so many times the woman takes full responsibility. And yet every abortion involves at least one man. It could be a boyfriend, a husband, a father, a pastor, a physician or a counselor. So often I hear a woman say, “I chose to have an abortion when I was 14.” But the reality is that she didn’t choose it; she had an abortion done to her, put upon her by a man – a cowardly man just like me.

Finding forgiveness

And yet there is hope and healing.

On July 4 we met this couple. They did the courageous thing – they didn’t have an abortion like I had chosen.

And they decided that we would be the parents of their baby. So we flew back home and prepared to be parents. We received a phone call on Christmas Eve 1990 … our baby had been born.

For those of us who have chosen to end a life, we can live in that shame and that condemnation. We can focus on what was and what might have been. And we can live in that shame. Or we can live as God wants us to live – free of guilt, shame, and condemnation.

Look at what it says in Hebrews 8:12 – “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins” (NLT). If you believe the Word of God is true, then you must believe that He wants you to live as if Jesus really did wipe out the consequences and pay the price for your sin.

Again, in Hebrews 10:17-18, it says, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds. And when sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices” (NLT). You do not need to sacrifice your life. You do not need to do what I did. I thought it was my calling to make God know that nobody felt worse about their sin than me. That’s what Satan wanted. That’s not what God wanted.

Grace for all God has grace for every story – grace for yours, and grace for mine. And that grace began to unfold in the summer of 1990. It was July 3, and I was in Atlanta for a speaking engagement. That day I had lunch with my publisher, Victor Oliver, and he asked, “What are you going to do about children?”

“Well, you know,” I said, “we’ve been doing this for seven years now, and I think we’re gonna look into adoption.” We didn’t know anything about it.

Victor said, “Steve, my best friend’s daughter lives here – she’s 16, she’s pregnant. The boy is 16. They can’t raise this child. They’re looking for a Christian couple to be the parents of their baby. Would you like to meet them?”

We flew to Atlanta on Christmas Day. And for some reason, I don’t know why, that nurse brought this darling, gorgeous baby and put her right in my arms. It was like God was giving back to me the very thing that I had destroyed. That’s the kind of God of grace and mercy that we have.

A lot of people don’t believe that. They think that God wants us to suffer and that there’s no blessing for those who sin. And Madeline Arterburn was born on Christmas Eve. I have the blessing of being a man who can share his past of death and destruction with acceptance – and to say that every bit of grace and mercy that God has given to me, He has also given to each and every one of us.

WHY YOUTH ARE TURNING AWAY FROM GOD, WORK, MARRIAGE, AND CHILDREN When most people think of a pregnancy center, they think we’re here only to help stop abortions. We work very hard to do just that. But there’s so much more to our pregnancy center.

Every day that we’re open, we minister to all sorts of people struggling in all sorts of ways. In doing so, we’ve discovered something very telling about young people today.

We saw it when Mark and Susan (we changed their names to protect their privacy) walked through our doors. This young teenage couple were facing an unplanned pregnancy and didn’t know who to turn to for answers. They came to us hoping we could help. We shared the Gospel with them, tried to minister to their immediate needs, and showed them how they were better together than apart. The couple eventually married. But because of what we see time and time again, their marriage ended in divorce.

SO WHAT DID WE SEE IN THIS YOUNG COUPLE AND SO MANY OTHERS WHO WALK THROUGH OUR DOORS? Today’s young people have a really hard time committing to anything. Statistics will show you just how bad this situation is. For instance, in 2008, over 50% of people between the ages of 20 and 24 had been with their then-current employer for less than 12 months. This generation

isn’t willing to commit to just one vocation and stick with it. The result is continued dependence on their parents and increasing poverty. But it’s not just vocational.

Marriage is suffering even more. The U.S. Census data shows that young adults are marrying later than ever before – if they marry at all. Back in 1960, only 9% of those over the age of 25 had never married. Today, that number is around 20%. But it’s not just young people who don’t commit to marriage. In 1960, only 7% of men and 6% of women had never married by the age of 45. In 2012, those numbers went up to 19% of men and 14% of women – more than double.

And those who wait until after the age of 32 to get married are far more likely to get divorced – cementing their inability to remain committed.

This lack of commitment reaches even further. It’s destroying our churches. As they do with their music lists, today’s young adults are picking and choosing which aspects of the faith to adopt. The end result is a faith that’s unique to them. It’s a religion created in their own likeness.

Therein lies the problem. People are growing more and more committed to themselves, but not to anything external. They don’t commit to jobs, to people, or to God.

Celebrating Our Volunteers Our volunteers are a valuable asset to the Center. They play a huge role by giving freely of their time to serve at WEC Family Resources. Our thanks to each volunteer who has served since this ministry was born, and to the volunteers serving now. God tells us in Psalm 100:2a, “serve the Lord with gladness…” and our volunteers do.

If you are led by our Lord to serve others, first pray for and consider supporting us. We are able to continue to serve others because of your prayers and support. Also pray about serving as a volunteer at WEC Family Resources. We have many areas in which volunteers may serve.
