Hope

Why do most women choose to have an abortion? Several years ago, the Guttmacher Institute set out to answer that question. The reasons they found were numerous.

According to the study, “The reasons most frequently cited were that having a child would interfere with a woman’s education, work, or ability to care for dependents (74%); that she could not afford a baby now (73%); and that she did not want to be a single mother or was having relationship problems (48%).” If you look at those answers a little closer, there’s one motivation underlying all of them: Fear! Women are fearful the baby will interfere with their life or their ability to care for their other children. They fear that they can’t afford the baby. Or they’re afraid to be a single mom.

All of these fears seem reasonable. But we should never make decisions out of fear. Instead, we should make decisions based on hope and what could happen. We need to think about what should happen, not about what shouldn’t happen. Why shouldn’t we make decisions based on fear? Fear is an incredibly pervasive mental battle. Once a fear has been planted into the mind, it festers there, swallowing other thoughts and demanding our full attention. Fear is controlling, persistent, and unrelenting. It causes us to make wrong choices. When fear rules, babies die. One woman recently wrote,
