The Pro-Abundant Life Movement!

Have you ever rejoiced to be a part of a movement? I have! While recently attending the national Care Net conference, I was reminded of how much I appreciate being a part of the pro-life movement, or as Care Net’s president Roland Warren references it, “the pro-abundant life movement!”

Jesus’ words about abundant life came just after a crucial reminder to His disciples about their enemy, and ours, in John 10:10. It says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (NIV) I love how the TPT version ends this verse: “But I have come to give you everything in abundance, more than you expect – life in its fullness until you overflow!”

At the Care Net conference, I received a report entitled “A Legacy of Life and Love: Pregnancy Centers Stand the Test of Time.” The research shows that the pro-life movement is saying “yes to life” in both word and deed. Pregnancy centers are always there, answering anxious phone calls from early morning to late at night, dealing with financial concerns and worries about health, counseling in the most challenging circumstances, and offering practical solutions to real problems. We guide our clients to a path of protection and hope.

As one of the nation’s over 2,700 pregnancy centers represented in the report, every one of us at The HOPE Center – our volunteers, supporters, and staff – can take pride in being part of a Christ-centered movement that provided an estimated $266,764,916 of free services in 2019 alone! As you read this magazine, I hope you discover how The HOPE Center is equipping women to choose life. And we’re standing with them in the months and years that follow that decision. You are indeed a force for good, and we couldn’t do it without you!

One of the programs that makes The HOPE Center unique and greatly valued by those we serve is our Earn While You Learn (EWYL) program. It’s a beautifully administered program that combines a volunteer advocate with an enrolled client throughout her pregnancy and beyond – up through her child’s second birthday. Our moms and dads earn diapers, wipes, and formula for their little ones, and also utilize their program earnings when making purchases at a significant discount at our Seeds Thrift Boutique. Most importantly, the BrightCourse curriculum is intended to help families thrive in the love of Christ.

Our biggest goal for 2022 is to expand our services in the City of Atlanta. Pregnancy tests and ultrasounds are provided in Atlanta through our Image Clear Ultrasound Mobile clinic, and we plan to develop in the city a robust continuum of care and referral network like the one we have at our Woodstock location. Please pray with us for God’s provision of a location from which we can launch this program expansion. With the very real potential of an overturn of Roe v. Wade at the Supreme Court level, we need to be more prepared than ever to come alongside families experiencing unplanned pregnancies with tangible support and the love of Christ.

Why do most women choose to have an abortion?

Several years ago, the Guttmacher Institute set out to answer that question. The reasons they found were numerous.

According to the study, “The reasons most frequently cited were that having a child would interfere with a woman’s education, work, or ability to care for dependents (74%); that she could not afford a baby now (73%); and that she did not want to be a single mother or was having relationship problems (48%).”

If you look at those answers a little closer, there’s one motivation underlying all of them: Fear!

Women are fearful the baby will interfere with their life or their ability to care for their other children. They fear that they can’t afford the baby. Or they’re afraid to be a single mom.

All of these fears seem reasonable. But we should never make decisions out of fear. Instead, we should make decisions based on hope and what could happen. We need to think about what should happen, not about what shouldn’t happen.

Why shouldn’t we make decisions based on fear? Fear is an incredibly pervasive mental battle. Once a fear has been planted into the mind, it festers there, swallowing other thoughts and demanding our full attention. Fear is controlling, persistent, and unrelenting. It causes us to make wrong choices.

When fear rules, babies die.

One woman recently wrote,

“When I got pregnant in 2008, there was no one who could support me. I hadn’t told my family; they weren’t close at that time. Fear was my only food and nutrient….

“When I got to the abortion clinic, it was nearly automatic; no questions asked, no options given. I don’t even remember the procedure. Nobody took the time to tell me, ‘Sit down child and listen before you make your choice.’

“Nobody told me, ‘This could be the best thing in your life.

God will help you, even if you don’t feel or believe in it now.

Life will go on. Time will pass.

Your feelings, your financial situation, your outlook will change, but that life will never come back. Tell your family, they might help you. You won’t be alone. It isn’t our choice to stop a life; the life’s already been given. Believe me when I tell you, you’re scared now, but it’ll get better, and we will help

you. I’m here to reassure you.’

“No one gave me a hug, and no one tried to tell me there was a different way. Everyone assumed I’d made a choice.

But I hadn’t. Fear had led me there. I had a problem, and, in my head, I found the best solution. I didn’t want to be – nor carry – a burden. I thought I was so liberal, modern, and independent. I could handle this.

“Today I know that was not a choice I made. I’d never heard those other words. I didn’t know there was another way….

Today I would choose life.”

She was afraid – and wasn’t offered a choice. Fear can’t live in the same space as hope.

When hope lives, it casts out fear. The HOPE Center understands the power of fear in the lives of so many people.

We see fear every day. We also realize that hope is the only true way to combat those fears,

which is why we are so eager to offer it with open hands and words of life. When we offer hope, and hope is realized, it saves babies lives!

The HOPE Center is here to offer another way. We tell women those “other words” that include all their choices, including parenting and adoption. We also give those hugs. We stand with women through the pregnancy and after the pregnancy to make sure they have what they need.

Hope Shows Its Power Over Fear The following story was written by a grandmother whose daughter found the hope she needed through The HOPE Center in 2007: He was 7 years old when he said to me, “Nanny, when I am having a hard time believing in God, I just look at the fact that I am alive…my parents are not together now, but He brought them together to make me. Then I know God is real.”

She was 17 years old, just out of high school, and trying to figure out who she was and what to do next in her life. She became infatuated with a dynamic, gregarious young man who became the father of her unborn child. Both parents were under 19 years old, living with their respective families without a sustainable career path, and neither having prepared to even care for

themselves, much less a child.

I am the mother of that girl. She discovered that she was pregnant in mid-February 2007. She called me at work to share the news, and I felt both grateful for the life that was being formed inside of her and the fear of what would come next for my daughter and her unborn child. She expressed the same feelings to me.

The sea of emotions swirling within her created a paralyzing effect in some instances, and an uncanny calm at other times. She fluctuated between hope and despair, fear and excitement.

Days after receiving the news, our families came together to discuss the future. I am so thankful for the support she received during this critical time of her early pregnancy.

The ministry of The HOPE Center had intersected the lives of the father’s family previously, and this

resource was passed along to my daughter. One winter day in 2007 my daughter walked into the re-sale store, which is now Seeds, and was greeted by a volunteer who shared with her the work of The HOPE Center and encouraged her about the resources available to her and her baby. She came home that day with a newfound faith, which, according to Hebrews 11:1, is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. She was assured that everything would be okay as she resolved to give her baby life. Hope permeated many arms of the same family, and lives were brought into being, mothers were encouraged and supported.

My grandson just celebrated his 14th birthday, and his life has been marked with miracle upon miracle.

Miracles began with HOPE and have continued through his life thus far. Matthew 10:31 says, “Fear not.

You are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10 reminds us to not be afraid. As fear diminishes HOPE GROWS.

Kayla’s Story

At the Center, she received a pregnancy test and ultrasound, revealing her preborn baby.

Just seven days shy of her 19th birthday, Kayla found out the unexpected news that she was pregnant. Told to get an abortion and given an ultimatum by her parents, Kayla didn’t know where to turn. She shared, “In my heart I didn’t want an abortion. I wasn’t scared of being pregnant, I was more scared to tell my family. I was bawling while on the phone with them thinking I was going to end two lives: my daughter’s and mine….”

“If I didn’t go to The HOPE Center, I would have ended my daughter’s life. She is beyond joyful, silly, hilarious, and just truly a light of Jesus walking around…. The Lord changed [my life] with her,” Kayla said. She also shared with our team, “You are such a blessing. The Lord is using you like you wouldn’t believe. Your prayers, your donations, your counseling, every bit of it is being used by the Lord.”

Adoption Is Love What happens at the intersection of an unexpected pregnancy and a couple who are struggling to conceive? Simply put, adoption and a union made from love.

Our journey began in 2009 when my husband and I decided after being married for a few years that we were ready to start our family. As with most couples, we naively thought the process would come quickly and smoothly for us. But it didn’t.

Month after month, nothing happed. So, reluctantly, after the 12-month mark, we made an appointment for infertility testing. Test after test, procedure after procedure led us to the diagnosis of Unexplained Infertility.

We progressed our treatment to IUI’s (intrauterine insemination), including a surgery to remove stage-3 endometrial tissue. After months of progressively

stronger medication and no success, we were asked to sit down with our doctor where he told us the heartbreaking news, “There’s 10% of my couples that I can’t help. You are part of my 10%.”

Pursuing Adoption Devastated, we closed the door to any further infertility treatment, and in time began our pursuit of adoption. What began as a very educational pursuit on the topic quickly turned to seeing God’s heart and redemptive work through adoption. After countless forms and multiple home studies, we were approved.

We put our “Yes” on the table multiple times for various adoption opportunities, but we were never picked. I stopped counting how many times we pursued various cases presented to us. But I never stopped praying, although after years and years even my prayers felt boring and stale.

Finally, God gave us our “Yes” through a sweet couple in Florida. We traveled to meet them a few times before the birth of their baby to begin developing a relationship with them. At the time of birth, they changed their mind and decided not to pursue their adoption plan. Although we knew that was certainly their right, we returned home to an empty nursery with hearts completely shattered.

But God in His goodness carried us through.

Never Giving Up We put our “Yes” back on the table, this time only with cases considered in the adoption world as “Stork Drops,” where the birth mother makes her adoption plan and signs revocation paperwork (annulment of her adoption plan) before being matched with the family.

As I prayed desperately and fervently that summer, my prayer was that our child would arrive before my birthday.

Two days before my birthday that fall, we finally got “The Call.” Our miracle daughter had been born, and we were chosen to be her parents. Our hearts overflowed with joy and amazement at God’s goodness and faithfulness to form our family. Now our daughter is 5 years old and continues to be the light of our lives.

I prayed countless prayers that she would know that she is loved, valued, and cared for in her journey. I could only imagine the tremendous amount of love it would take for her to carry her child to delivery and make an adoption plan.

We will forever be indebted to and thankful for our birth mother and her sacrificial love for her child. She gave us a gift that we could not provide for ourselves, and she chose LIFE! She chose life in the midst of a culture that screams otherwise.

She was brave and courageous in her decision. And she is blessed to know that her child lives a happy, healthy, loved, and joy-filled life with parents, family, and friends that love her child beyond measure.

Turning Unexpected Into Something Beautiful There is no doubt that adoption involves grief, but even in the midst of that pain, God is faithful. He is close to the brokenhearted and I know that God

Life is precious, and we’re so thankful that God can use adoption as a way to redeem families and use stories such as ours for His glory.

Having experienced firsthand the value of life, I knew that I wanted to find a way to give back to an organization that encompasses this value. That’s when God led me to The HOPE Center – a place where women can be equipped and empowered to choose life. I’ve had the honor of volunteering at The HOPE Center as a Client Advocate for

over a year now. I look forward to coming in each week to love on and encourage women who need support and prayer.

The women that come to our center have their own unique story and reason that they seek our support, but being able to listen to them, care for them, and share God’s love with each of them is such a blessing. My favorite part of talking with each client is the opportunity to share the Gospel and encourage their deeper relationship with Jesus if they already know Him. There’s a peace to know that not only are we providing for them at The HOPE Center, but that ultimately God is in control and providing for them as well.

We personally know the heartache and joy that can be found in adoption, and gladly share our story at any opportunity that we can. We’re thankful for how God formed our family, and how he proved His faithfulness to us in the process.

The HOPE Center was started in May of 1990 by a local church as a compassionate outreach to women facing crisis pregnancies in our community. We became an independent 501(c)(3) in November of 1991. Our financial support comes entirely through churches, businesses, grants, and individuals in our community.

The heart of The HOPE Center, from the beginning, has been to reach the abortion-vulnerable with the love of the Gospel and to equip women to choose life. We are dedicated to both the saving of innocent human lives and the nurture of the families into which these precious children are born.

Our passion is making sure women are equipped, educated, and empowered with the information and resources they need to make fully informed decisions about their unplanned pregnancies and to support them in every life decision.

Sheri’s Story

Experiencing pressure from the father of the baby, as well as financial stress, Sheri was concerned about how she would be able to work as a new mom. After meeting with our team and hearing about all her pregnancy options, Sheri chose life for her baby.

She enrolled in our Earn While You Learn program where she received one-on-one mentoring, childbirth classes, parenting education, as well as supplies she needed for her pregnancy and parenthood. She was also referred for Medicaid, WIC, housing, food, and churches in our community.

When Sheri discovered that she was pregnant, she was terrified. Married, but in the process of divorcing, she was unsure how she would handle everything financially as a single mother. Several people in Sheri’s life encouraged her to come to The HOPE Center.

When recounting her experience at The HOPE Center, Shari stated, “This service has been invaluable to my spiritual and mental health. It has helped me get through a very confusing [and] difficult time.”

Serving Women for Over 30 Years Serving abortion-vulnerable women for over 30 years, The HOPE Center has always existed to equip pregnant women to choose life. Since 1990, our ministry has expanded greatly, offering services to women and the community under the umbrella of The HOPE Center through Options Medical Clinic, Image Clear Ultrasound Atlanta, the Earn While You Learn program, and Seeds Thrift Boutique.

Thanks to the generous donations of our supporters, we’re able to provide free pregnancy testing and ultrasound services to women

facing unplanned pregnancies.

Options Medical Clinic provides free pregnancy testing and limited obstetrical ultrasound services as well as decision support. Instead of succumbing to the feeling that abortion is their only option, many women, and their partners, realize they’ll have support and resources if they choose to parent or make an adoption plan.

We serve the greater Atlanta area with our Image Clear Ultrasound Mobile clinic at various locations throughout the city. At each one of our mobile locations our staff and medical professionals offer

lab-quality pregnancy testing and ultrasounds. Our ICU Mobile clinic is staffed by medical professionals and provides the same medical services women would find at our office clinic.

Women visiting our mobile unit can get the answers they need in comfort and privacy during some of their most vulnerable and fear-filled moments.

In addition to the medical services we offer, The HOPE Center provides material assistance through our Earn While You Learn (EWYL) program. This educational program provides ongoing support

for moms and families, both during and after pregnancy. Clients earn valuable materials such as cribs, car seats, formula, and diapers, while learning how to prepare for childbirth and how to become better parents. Lack of financial support is often the main perceived obstacle for a life choice. We overcome that hurdle by offering the help every new mom needs.

As an extension of The HOPE Center, Seeds Thrift Boutique is a great resource for both our clients and our community. The sale of quality donated clothing, baby items, furniture, and home décor contributes greatly to The HOPE Center ministry. Although open to the general public, our Earn While You Learn participants benefit from their ability to earn significant discounts on needed

resources at Seeds. Those who volunteer at the store experience the joy of being an extended part of the network of support for our expectant families. Donations are welcomed, and volunteers, whether serving individually or as part of a group, are vital to the ministry and greatly appreciated.

Seeds Thrift Boutique

God equips us for the task He has called us to do.

Seeds Thrift Boutique, a part of The HOPE Center ministry, is located adjacent to our Center and is such a fun place to serve. Our volunteers enjoy their time there and always feel warm and welcomed.

The HOPE Center can reach abortionvulnerable women in our community in their moment of need as a result of the financial support given by our donors.

Last year, over half our funding came from our Monthly Life Champion Supporters and General Solicitations from individual donors. Our annual Banquet and Church Support / Baby Bottle campaigns and the Walk for Life were the next largest contributors to our sources of support.

In addition to monetary support, The HOPE Center received a donation of two 3D ultrasound machines. One from the Knights of Columbus and another from Focus on the Family. We also received a grant from Focus on The Family through Choose Life Marketing for client advertising. We were also blessed with an outpouring of diapers and wipes from several churches in our community.

Life Champions Save Lives

Our desire to bring hope to women of all ages when faced with an unplanned pregnancy is why we are called The HOPE Center. We offer access to free resources like classes, testing services, and material assistance. More importantly, we provide emotional support and a listening ear to women who may otherwise have nowhere else to turn.

When a woman needs to make one of the most significant decisions of her life, we want to be that safe place where she can get unbiased information and the services she needs. Whether it is pregnancy options mentoring, post-abortion support, parenting classes, free diapers and baby supplies, or adoption referrals, The HOPE Center provides loving care.

However, we cannot give the support we do without generous gifts from our donors. Twenty-eight percent of our funding is a result of our incredible
