Mtwazi was a dedicated leader MATTHEW SHELDON The deputy president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, visited Zweletemba on Friday 3 October to commemorate the life of the late comrade Thobile “Tall” Mtwazi, who dedicated his life to the liberation struggle.

Cllr. Pat Marran, from ward four, expressed the significance of Com rade Thobile Mtwazi’s role in the ANC and in the context of South Africa’s history.

Ramaphosa and his delegation visited the Mtwazi family to express their deepest gratitude towards the family to have allowed their son to dedicate his life to the ANC, help fight the struggle and protect some of the country’s most important figures in recent history. Mtwazi’s mother, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Mtwazi, thanked Ramaphosa and his delegation for developing their child politically. “His role in the country’s struggle for liberation was so important that it cannot be forgotten,” said Ramaphosa, as he highlighted the importance of the immense role Mtwazi played during the Apartheid era. Mtwazi served as the personal body guard of two international icons in the late Chris Hani and Nelson Mandela. In 1981, he was inaugurated as

a student representative at Vusisizwe Secondary School in Zweletemba. Two years later, he and a few other representatives formed the Congress of South African Students where he became the leader (chairman) of the movement. He was also a member of the South African Youth Congress. According to Zinzo Mthini, regional secretary of the ANC in the Boland region, in 1985 Mtwazi left the country to join Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in exile. “During this period Mtwazi was involved in many ANC underground operations as an MK soldier,” said Mthini. He added that Mtwazi also served as the leader of the ANC Youth League from 1991 to 1993. After Chris Hani was murdered Mtwazi became the personal body guard of the late Nelson Mandela. Mtwazi accompanied Mandela on more than 40 trips around the world before the president’s retirement in 1999. When Mandela retired, Mtwazi followed suit. Ramaphosa also visited Mtwazi’s grave site, had a moment of silence, after which he laid a wreath to pay his respects and utter a few words of appreciation for his role

in the movement. To conclude the day, a memorial lecture was held at Vusisizwe Secondary School. Ramaphosa told the youth that Mtwazi was a dedicated soldier, a dedicated member of the ANC who never betrayed the movement for

personal gains. He explained to them that these are the qualities of a leader, and they should learn from it and create their own bright futures. Mtwazi died at age 38 after a short illness and was buried in Zweletemba.

The crowd listened attentively throughout the entire memorial lecture last week at Vusisizwe Secondary School.
