Welcome

As we head into the colder winter months and all the gladness that it brings for us, I am really delighted to be welcoming you to our Spring 2025 brochure. I hope you will find a feast of shows and opportunities that will tempt you to book up and look forward to in the new year.

Early in 2025 the seasonal winter fun continues with Aladdin, tickets have been flying out of the box office for months now! If you are still looking to add some pantomime magic to your festive celebrations, then look no further as our pantomime is a firm favourite with the whole family.

This season we have some really interesting, poignant, dynamic, fun and in some cases, hair raising live programming such as Black is the Colour of my Voice, Yippee Ki Yay – The Parody Celebration of Die Hard, Hold on to your Butts, The Roller Boys and Hari Budha Magar - No Legs, No Limits, along with some incredible comedians such as Milton Jones, Tom Stade and Justin Moorhouse.

There is also a whole host of musicians waiting to grace our stages from Creedance Clearwater Review, The Animals and Friends, Steve Knightley, Eddi Reader, Dreamcoat Stars and The Phantoms.

The Royal Ballet are bringing us The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Romeo & Juliet and the Royal Opera House the fabulous Turandot, with NT Live presenting The Importance of Being Earnest, all via film screenings. There really is no reason to leave the city to see some really impressive productions.

Additionally, our WT Workroom has some fantastic opportunities to expand your creative technique, our adult classes are definitely worth a look with tutors offering a warm welcome to new members, whilst our Swan Youth Theatre has expanded its timetable due to popularity and demand. Sign up for the new term we would love to see you there!

Finally, we are committed to improving the lives of those with whom we work, offering free bursary places for our theatre groups, free community performances and a free monthly Culture Cafe. Body Before Voice with Harlan Rust

This workshop will explore the process of tapping into our tactile senses, stage presence, movement through space and how to physically embody character. 80% of communication is nonverbal, and during this workshop we will begin the journey to understanding how we can master our physical and emotional body. Harlan Rust Trained at London Contemporary Dance School and has since worked at the Royal Opera House, The Barbican and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival while taking part in a number of national and international tours.

Monologues Masterclass with Liz Felton

How do we confidently hold the space as a solo performer? Join Liz Felton for one evening masterclass to explore your relationship with the stage, the text and your audience. Enjoy building your toolkit of vocal and physical choices as an actor performing monologue. Liz Felton is a visiting writer and director at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. She also set up The Adult Company at Bristol Old Vic in 2013 and is a very experienced Community Theatre practitioner across Bristol and the Southwest.

Audience As Authors with James Yarker

In this workshop James will help the group devise a short piece of theatre that emphasises ensemble working and bringing in the audience as creative collaborators. It will be a fun and friendly session with serious intent. James Yarker co-founded Stan’s Cafe in Birmingham in 1991 shortly after graduating from Lancaster University. Since then, he has directed all the company’s major productions, co-wrote the Bloomsbury Methuen book Devising Theatre With Stan’s Cafe and is currently an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham

Want to take a few minutes to unwind? Join us for a sketching workshop designed to help you focus on your wellbeing. This is a chance to have a behind the scenes tour around our historic arts venue, Huntingdon Hall, taking inspiration from the archives. All levels of ability are welcome, and if you’re a complete beginner our skilled local artist Sarah Millin will guide you through the techniques needed. Materials will be provided but please feel free to bring along your own (water based) if you wish.

Based on the popular 1988 MGM film that starred Steve Martin and Michael Cane, the show takes us to the French Riviera for high jinks and hilarity. Sophisticated, suave with a good dash of mischief, this hysterical musical comedy features a delightfully jazzy score by David Yazbek (‘The Full Monty’) and was nominated for a staggering eleven Tony Awards.

In this unique solo comedy-drama, inspired by his own life, Jon Hague, veteran of multiple deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland, lifts the curtain on the unexpected consequences, when a sober thespian marches unscripted to war. ‘Why go where you’re not wanted?’ so asks a gay theatre maker, who puts down the bottle to pick up a gun, recklessly joining the British Army whilst the LGBT+ ban was still callously enforced.

When Alan’s car crashes in the middle of nowhere, he hopes his bad day can’t get any worse – but it does. After trudging through muddy countryside, he comes across a campsite, run by the eccentric Virgil. With no other options and no phone signal, he has no choice but to stay. Unfortunately for Alan, there’s only one plot left, situated in between a sheep-poo bin and the rather annoying Justin. The campsite tension escalates as they start to reveal their true selves, with hilarious and unfortunate consequences.

It’s 1956. The global political climate is uncertain. In the UK Sara Wesker is writing a letter. Back in the day Sara led the “singing strikers of 1928” to win better working conditions for female garment workers in the East End. Later she fought at the Battle of Cable Street, inspired one of our most famous playwrights and had a scandalous, high profile love affair. But did her love of the cause cost her the love of her life? And was it worth it? This 5-star reviewed, OffFest nominated play, which features some of the songs sung on Sara’s picket lines has sold out in New York, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and in theatres across the UK.
