Teaming Up With Carpet Retailers I had a long telephone coversation recently with one of our WoolSafe Approved Service Providers, Rob Reeve of UK Carpet Care and Suffolk Rug Care.

Rob has discovered an excellent, and highly productive, way of building a mutually beneficial relationship with the best local carpet and rug retailers.

I asked Rob to share his experience with the rest of the WoolSafe Global Network and he gladly agreed. This is what Rob had to say...

“After cleaning carpets and rugs in my area over a long period of time the same carpet retailer’s name kept coming up. My clients consistently told me how great this retailer was with his knowledgable advice, quality carpets and rugs at reasonable prices, excellent fitting etc. All-in-all a pleasurable customer journey from start to finish.

I decided that for those clients who were looking at replacement rather than a clean I was comfortable recommending this retailer because he seemed to have the same ethos to

customer care that I do, and that I feel is so important.

I called the retailer and asked what time they closed as I wanted to pop round. He seemed very wary when he asked ‘Why? What do you want?’ I just explained that I wanted to pick up some of his cards because so many of my clients have been complimentary about him. On hearing this his attitude changed immediately.

Up to this point I had not had much luck talking to retailers. I had tended to walk into the shop, ask for ‘the boss’ and wait until he was free. He might listen to half of my pitch about how great I was at carpet cleaning then, rather disinterested, take my card never to be heard from again.

This time however the retailer greeted me warmly when I arrived, he even offered me a cup of coffee. We chatted for a while and it helped that he knew about WoolSafe and the WOW Warranty programme. I took some of his cards and as I was leaving he asked if he could have some of mine too... bingo!”

I thought that if this approach worked so well in this instance then how about trying in the other areas where I work too?

I started asking every client in the different locations where they bought their carpet and what the experience was like. After a while I got a picture of who all the best carpet and rug retailers were. I then approached them in the same way I did the first and guess what? I got the same reaction from all the retailers.

Remember, not all retailers cater to the same clients. There’s no point me recommending a retailer selling £10,000 rugs to a landlord with a portfolio of properties full of students.

I will just be wasting everone’s time so I try to match up the right customer with the best retailer to cater for their needs.

This has worked so well that I have 04

now built on those relationships to set up rug drop-off and pick-up stations within the retail stores.

I created ‘Rug Drop Off Point’ advertising boards to put outside the shops and offered retailers the opportunity to get a commission for every rug they collect on my behalf.

I can now do a weekly circular around all the retailers, picking up rugs and dropping off cleaned, dried and wrapped rugs back to the store.

This system saves the rug owner the cost of pick-up and delivery, saves me valuable time and earns the retailer extra income for very little effort while bringing new customers through the door.

These frequent visits build extremely loyal connections with the retailers.

We help them and they help us.

We now stock WoolSafe Approved spot and stain removers and care kits with the carpet retailers to help safely support, with correct aftercare, their flooring products being sold.”

Tshun Peei Wong, based in Malaysia has been appointed Regional Director, WoolSafe East Asia and China.

Ms. Wong is an entrepreneur with many years’ of experience within Asia and is the founder and chief executive for OneHygienic. OneHygienic is the leading specialist in mattress, upholstery and carpet cleaning in Malaysia and has associate branches in Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore.

It was well attended by delegates traveling from England, Austria, Brazil, Nigeria, Canada, and around the US to advance their knowledge and expand their skill set.

Steve Bakker, of WoolSafe Global Marketing, enlightened the delegates as to the organization’s current and future promotional activities. Of particular interest to attendees were the successful introduction of WoolSafe Associate Membership for carpet manufacturers, the uptake of WoolSafe carpet and rug care iFrames, and the WoolSafe Carpet Stain Removal Guide App.

Seize The Opportunities WoolSafe Offers

WoolSafe Approved Service Providers Miranda and Scott Gwilliam This week marks our 3rd year with the WoolSafe Organisation as an Approved Service Provider and Rug Care Specialist. Having a rug cleaning facility, we know and understand the importance of having this association and branding. Being listed on WoolSafe.org and using the logos is important to us, but is not just for appearances. We embraced our first taste of WoolSafe education within the Fiber Care Specialist course and we made a commitment to ourselves that rug education would be one of our primary business goals.

This emphasis on rug education would not only be for ourselves, but for our staff, clients, referral sources and flooring retailers. I am proud that we have reached a point where this has come to fruition and is second nature to us. Every phone call, email, in-person meeting or presentation results in elevated conversation about the rug or carpet as well as problemsolving solutions and it makes this line of work fulfilling.

When we first started with WoolSafe we enjoyed the education, then we started incorporating their logos with our website, marketing materials and even on our delivery van. I then discovered the WoolSafe Stain Guide app on my iPhone and was thrilled with it as a resource. It has been so convenient to have over 50 stain guides with very specific step-by-step options to help our client’s problem solve on their own. I can’t tell you how many times I have been able to use this app with clients, rug retailers, friends and family. I received a desperate email from a high-end rug retailer about their client whose young child had a bloody nose spot on their new wool rug, eek! I was able to save the day with the app which is free for anyone to download.

I am in a few local “Mom” FaceBook groups and people are constantly posting about bizarre stains on their flooring and upholstery like crayon, marker, faeces , vomit, food, drinks, etc. I always refer the WoolSafe app and receive many thanks. I even featured it in my email newsletter and social media posts by displaying a screenshot of the app set to the GRAVY stain option prior to Thanksgiving. WoolSafe care and maintenance tools such as the stain guide app, iframe and leaflets help tremendously as a time saver and ensure that I am relaying proper information to our clients.

WOOLSAFE NEWS Winter 2017/18 My husband, Scott Gwilliam, and I attended the WoolSafe conference in Las Vegas this past September. With high hopes and a craving for education, we were not disappointed.

The conference was packed with advanced educational content about topics that were important to us and our business like cellulosic/rayon fibers on the market today, cleaning techniques, marketing strategies, protectors, spotters, and new findings by the WoolSafe research team. The speakers were top-notch and the educational takeaways, priceless.

We were inspired and eager to share our knowledge as we came home to Arizona and began working on a project aimed at rug education for designers and “to the trade” retailers in our market. We are happy to report that Scott has since been approved as an Interior Design Continuing Education Credits (IDCEC) instructor and will be teaching his first flooring CEU at Desert Design Days in Scottsdale at Organic Looms later this month. It is a one-hour intermediate CEU with an emphasis on fibers. The

course title is INTERMEDIATE RUG EDUCATION: Fibers, Construction and Essentials to make informed buying decisions.

“We are happy that we moved beyond our website listing and logo usage to taking advantage of so many other aspects that WoolSafe has to offer. It has led us to where we want to be and elevated our business.”

We recently received a referral from the WoolSafe team for a trade flooring retailer and distributor in Scottsdale who needed guidance. They had some knowledge of WoolSafe and wanted to learn more. They had many questions about protectors and had even been performing in-house protector/spot cleaning research on their samples.

Care and Maintenance information for their designers and clients was a priority of theirs as well as having a reputable cleaner to refer.

We have met with their staff multiple times and now have a mutuallybeneficial working relationship. They are already referring us work and have our marketing materials displayed in their showroom. We assisted them in choosing a WoolSafe approved spotter, protector and helped them further along the path they aimed for.

They are signing up for the WoolSafe Associate Membership and will soon be able to incorporate the WoolSafe care and maintenance resources on their website, with the iframe, app, leaflets, etc. WoolSafe was able to address their needs across the board.

I am so very thankful for the education, resources, and relationships that have resulted from being a part of the WoolSafe Organisation.

In Search of the Magic Protector Carpets and rugs that have a cellulosic pile – viscose rayon, sisal, sea grass, etc. – can present problems with soiling and staining. Cellulosic fibres are both hygroscopic – they absorb moisture and therefore coloured liquids rapidly – and present little resistance to getting soiled. This is particularly noticeable if the carpet contains two different yarns, as shown in the picture of a rug with viscose and wool yarns stained with coffee and then rinsed.

As there is little that can be done – at least as far as we are aware – to the cellulosic fibre, but a possible solution might be a treatment with some sort of protective finish.

And that is exactly the way WoolSafe approached this issue. After some internet research and talking to a number of interested parties, it was decided to carry out investigative work, initially on two different carpets – 100% viscose rayon, 100% Tencel.

Different types of protectors were also involved: water- and solvent-based fluoro-chemicals and a silicone-based product.

It had already been suggested that cellulose, being so absorbent, would almost certainly need multiple applications, with long drying times in between, to be effective. Up to five treatments had been suggested.

It is a well known fact, that overapplication of a protector can lead to Coffee spill on wool and viscose carpet excessive soiling.We wanted to find the optimum: the best protection without It is quite clear that, not only have the extra soiling. Colorimetric measurements taken after the last application showed no significant colour change on Tencel, but the 100% viscose carpet became slightly lighter from the two solvent-based protectors and darker from the water-based ones.

Unprotected, stained from height & blotted

The soiling tests (using the standard WoolSafe Rapid Soiling Test) showed that Protector A had a beneficial effect on Tencel, but not so on viscose; whilst Protector B promoted the soiling of Tencel, especially on higher soiling levels. One of the others gave a good soil protection on viscose.

But the real interest of this project was stain resistance, which was tested by the application of (hot) coffee and Standard red dye stains. 10mls of the liquid was dropped through a tube to a well defined area of the test carpets from a height (50cm), to create two coffee and two red dye stains. One of each was removed after 5 minutes, the other after 30 minutes, just by blotting with damp tissue. The dampening of the tissue with water was necessary, as the fibres did not give up any stain to the dry tissue even when fresh.

On Tencel the improvement in removal with Protector A is 30-40% for the fresh stains, 20% for the 30 minute ones.

Protector A gave very similar protection also on viscose. Protector B was good on viscose, but did not perform satisfactorily on Tencel, especially against coffee.

The pictures (above on the right) show the difference in residual staining between the unprotected Tencel and the one protected by two applications of Protector A.

Clearly, more work needs to be done, but the results are encouraging. We will keep you updated through Woolsafe News and on the Cleaning Fine Fibres training course.

Additional dates in 2018 set for ‘Cleaning Fine Fibres’ training course WoolSafe Academy ran a packed out Fine Fibre Cleaning training course kindly hosted by Jacaranda Carpets in Market Harborough recently.

Course tutor, Paul Pearce explained the challenges facing professional cleaners when carrying out maintenance cleaning and attempting spot removal on these valuable and beautiful carpets and rugs.

es Two New Advanced Specialised Techniqu Courses for 2018! For Modern Upholstery Textiles A unique classroom based course which focuses on modern problem fabrics which may, or may not, appear on your current fibre testing charts. New fabrics are sent to the tutor, Julie Roberts, to be tested and the results of those cleaning trials, along with fabric samples, are given out to delegates to create their very own fabric reference manual. Fabric properties are discussed with special focus on faults and difficulties that may occur, the chemistry they are not compatible with and how those challenges can be overcome.

Advances in Carpet Manufacture, a very comprehensive textbook on carpets, published by the scientific publishers, Elsevier was recently updated and expanded. The book, edited by Professor K.K. Goswami, is part of the Textile Institute Book series, and aims to cover all topics on textile floor coverings, from fibre types, through different manufacturing to design.

The 2nd edition, published in September this year also includes new topics like functional finishes for added value and recycling. WoolSafe chairman, Paul Bakker was asked to write about the acoustic and thermal properties of carpeted floors,

and Dr Ă gnes Zsednai contributed a new chapter on carpet cleaning and maintenance, including a stain removal guide.

The WoolSafe Conference date has been set for the 4th of October with plans in the offing for seminars and workshops covering inspirational marketing and advanced cleaning solutions for modern fibres and fabrics.

The Case of the Face-to-Face Fiasco The contract to build a new Community Centre included the provision and installation of carpets throughout. The carpets chosen from pattern books comprised a number of Face-to-Face Wilton carpets in the same design but different colours.

In face-to-face weaving, two carpets are produced at the same time. This is achieved by sharing the pile yarn between separate woven backings that are produced simultaneously and which are facing one another as illustrated below. At the end of the production line a sharp blade splits the two down the middle to produce two ‘identical’ carpets. In fact they are not identical because one is a mirror image of the other. To avoid confusion the two will have different batch numbers

designated A and B for example and often referred to as male and female production lots.

When planning any installation it is especially important not to mix material from the two batches.

Otherwise there will be a pattern mismatch down the seams, which is exactly what happened (see top image).
