A single tree produces approximately 260 pounds of oxygen per year. That means two mature trees can supply enough oxygen to support a family of four. On Friday, December 12th in the Arsenal Building in Manhattan, Partnerships for Parks, (NYRP) celebrated the planting in the last four years of over 1,100 trees and over 100 tree care events in the four Queen’s neighborhoods in Woodside, Astoria, Sunnyside and Long Island City. The North Star Fund project, which was part of this $7.9 million initiative to invest in the energyefficiency and environmental projects was created in response to an electrical power outage in July 2006. The people and organizations associated with the initiative trained a community of volunteers who will lead the program forward in the coming years. “We live in a concrete world, so it’s important to have signs of life, and trees remind us we are part of a larger living planet,” said one of the speakers at the event Alyssa Bonilla, from the Power from the People. Noted speakers, included NYC Parks Department Commissioner Mitchell Silver; City Parks Foundation Executive Director Heather Lubov; and the community participants. As a volunteer and com-

You have to be willing to work hard. We survived because we stuck together and we endured. We put lots aside for the larger goal.” Sabina Saragoussi, Director of Partnerships for Parks said, “None of this work could not have been done without the many community members, organizations and businesses that played a critical role in caring for and advocating for these precious neighborhood assets. I’m thrilled to see how far we’ve come with

the Greening Western Queens initiative. I was lucky enough to be a Program Director in 2011 here at Partnerships for Parks for the very beginning of the program. We had big dreams for what we might be able to accomplish, but I must say that you’ve helped us to far surpass what we expected. I’m excited to see what comes next, and figure out how we can continue to support the community moving forward.” In our own community, the Woodside Neighborhood Associations cares for the newly planted GWQ street trees regularly, recruiting 15-20 volunteers every weekend to participate in cleaning and greening activities in the 11377 zip code. Local schools participate in these activities, such as Saint Sebastian Catholic School, PS 11, local churches and mosques including(continued on page 4)

The life of Sunnyside Theater is being threatened due to negotiations for a new lease, which will be up on January 4, 2015. The owner of the Cinema, Rudy Prashad wants a lease of 1-2 years, instead of a month-to-month lease where he could be kicked out at any time. They are asking for further dialog with its landlord, Mr. John Ciafone, regarding his intentions for the property, if he wants to tear down the theater, make much needed repairs on it or turn it into luxury apartments. For many years the Sunnyside Cinema has provided affordable entertainment to the people of Queens and is an important relic for the community. The petition and rally seeks to preserve the theater and strike a fair deal for all involved.

A SUCCESSFUL 2014 For WOTM

by Adrian Bordoni

Woodside On The Move is proud of our 2014 accomplishments, especially our recent activities. Our Turkey Drive provided food for 600 families, a Toy Drive provided for 200 kids as well as a Thanksgiving Dinner for Sunnywood residents were part of a busy November. In addition, it is our second year providing Holiday lights for the business corridor on Woodside and Roosevelt Avenue, giving a bright backdrop leading to the dazzling Christmas tree at Sohncke Square. The lights are part of a larger effort, with funds allocated by NYC Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer to provide support and business opportunities for our top ranked restaurants and traditional stores and establishments. Dan Connor and Jimmy Jacobsen owners of Donovan’s Pub donated the new tree, and we thank them. Wishing all a warm and safe Holiday season and a successful 2015, we hope our parades, concerts, summer camps and other programs have helped make this community better for all who live, work and do business in Woodside and Queens.
