HOW TO GET THROUGH LIFE WITH A MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER

Many people have a difficult time living a normal life when they have to battle with anxiety and other fear related issues on a regular basis. It can be depressing to struggle with your mental health and are unable to get the relief you deserve. As a result, here are nine suggestions on how to handle a mental health disorder in your life.

1. Educate yourself regarding your mental health issues: It is important to learn as much as you can about your mental health disorder so you can better manage your situation. Talk to a professional who can give you advice on how to manage your situation.

2. Use the services of a counselor: Take advantage of the help that is available around you. If possible, talk to a counselor who can help you face your fears and anxieties. They will be able to provide you with additional advice and insights on how to deal with your current problem.

3. Learn from your experiences: In every anxiety-related situation you experience, begin to learn what works, what doesn’t work, and what you need to improve on in getting rid of your fears and anxieties. Use what you have learned when you experience another similar situation.

4. Know where to go for help: Your family doctor is a great source in getting help for your mental health issues. Your local hospital is another place you can visit to find treatment. Hospitals know a lot of good counselors and mental health programs in your area and they can lead you in the right direction.

5. Surround yourself with supportive friends: You need to surround yourself with positive people. A person can always go to a support group where they can meet people who are also struggling with their mental health.

6. Be patient with yourself: Do not be hard on yourself when things do not go as planned. Dealing with anxiety and fear can be challenging so be patient. Do not be in a rush to get things done. Go at a pace that you feel comfortable with when accomplishing your regular activities.

7. Take it one day at a time: Instead of worrying about how you will get through the rest of the week or month, try to focus on today. Each day can provide us with different opportunities to learn new things and that includes learning how to deal with your problems. You never know when the answers you are looking for will come to your doorstep.

8. Worrying makes it worse: A lot of times, our worrying can make the problem even worse. All the worrying in the world will not change anything. All you can do is to do your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it in stride.

9. Your goal is to get better: Your goal is to get your life back on track. Don’t waste your time arguing with your friends or relatives who are giving you a difficult time. This isn’t a public relations event where you need to get everyone’s approval. Your main focus is for you to live a happy life without anxiety and fear.

LIC OPEN STREETS

LaGuardia Community College/CUNY is taking over the streets of Long Island City, Queens with a series of culturally diverse, informative, and entertaining programs that are available for the public to enjoy. The series of programs are part of the LaGuardia Community Greenway, a collaborative effort to create a new open space for Long Island City, and LaGuardia’s 33,000 students and faculty. LaGuardia envisions reclaiming public streets to create a space that is sustainable and positively impacts the physical and mental health of the community and environment.

As a pilot program in 2022, organized by the President’s Society Environment Program, the Greenway was introduced as a pop-up space for outdoor activities and programming on 29th Street, stretching from Skillman Avenue to 47th Avenue. More than 1,000 people enjoyed the pop-up Greenway. The success of the pop-up Greenway inspired the LaGuardia community to partner with New York City’s Open Streets program to bring back the LaGuardia Community Greenway with a series of eight days filled with events and activities that reflect our community’s diversity, culture, and spirit.

The 2023 Schedule includes:

- April 19: Healthy Earth, Healthy You @ The Plaza

- April 26: Pages and Poems @ The Plaza

- May 3: Cinco de Mayo @ The Plaza

- May 10: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month @ The Plaza

- May 17: Red Hawks Day @ The Plaza

- May 24: La Casa @ The Plaza

- May 31: Jobs Fair @ The Plaza

- June 7: Pride @ The Plaza

Each day will offer a variety of activities: Food vendors, live music, exhibition tables, and workshops. Open to LaGuardia students, faculty, staff and the New York City community.

HOP AROUND!

TAKE YOUR BIKE ON THE FERRY!

Hello Woodsiders! And just like that Spring is here. The first great

weather week of 2023 is at once a great time to take a bike ride, and often a bitter reminder that we aren’t in good enough shape to ride all the way out to the Palisades. How can we enjoy the best of spring without pulling a hamstring in the process? Let’s plan some nice, flat, waterfront rides!

Head on down to the water

We may no longer be able to see the Long Island City waterfront behind all those tall buildings, but behind them are two of NYC’s best waterfront parks! Gantry Plaza State Park and Hunters Point South Park are both 15-20 rides from our area. The latter opened a few years ago but remains both underrated and under used. Hop on your bike, or a Citi Bike, and cruise on down Skillman Avenue all the way past the High School to the very end, wiggle over to 51st Avenue and take it down to Center Blvd. Gantry Bay will be to your right and Hunters Point South to your left. You can take out your picnic blanket at either or go further!

Why stop at the Queens waterfront?

While we are on the waterfront, why not ride on the NYC Ferry? Gantry State Park has a dock on the Astoria Ferry line, while Hunters Point South provides access to the East River line. Bikes are allowed on the ferry, for a nominal extra fee, and the waterfront destinations can connect you to the Brooklyn Greenway (via the East River line Dumbo stop), Roosevelt Island (Astoria ferry line), or the East River Greenway in Lower Manhattan (both ferries to Wall St). The greenways are an hour plus away by bike, but by hopping on a ferry you can access them now and build up to the long ride later!

At the risk of getting philosophical, Spring is the most purposeful season. Everything we see blooming was planted by someone who has waited for this day to come. The same can be said of our city’s bike network, our waterfront parks, our use of the waterways, and our greater transportation network. So, let’s make the most of what we have available to us, and ride safe, Woodside!
