On Thursday March 1 , over 100 friends, collages and supporters gathered at Dazies Restaurant for the kick off party for the re-election of Cathy Nolan. The gathering was held at Dazies because they’re known for their flowing wine, great hors d’oeuvres and excellent staff. The popular Assemblywoman drove from Albany and was first greeted by her husband Gerald Marcano and her son Nicholas, who was pacing outside waiting for his Mom’s arrival. Upon entering the gathering, she received a big cheer from her supporters and the night progressed into the perfect kick off for her re-election.

On Sunday morning, the St. Pat’s for All pre-parade celebration was in full swing at the Anoroc Democratic Club hosted by Democratic District Leaders Deirdre Feerick. John Smyth, Costa Constantides and State Committeewoman Marie Konecko. Homemade soda bread, a traditional Irish breakfast and piping hot coffee warmed up revelers as they listened to some traditional Irish music before heading down to the parade route.

On March 2nd, CM Van Bramer sponsored the first-ever Queens Bike Forum with Community Board 2 in Sunnyside. The Department of Transportation’s Bike Program Staff were in attendance to hear recommendations from community residents in order to develop safe and efficient bike lanes in Western Queens.

“The goal of this forum was to make sure that the community has input in the DOT’s bike lane implementation process,” said Van Bramer who cycles his himself.

“The roads of New York City are for everyone and we want to make sure that everyone stays safe. In my opinion, a well-planned and well-organized bike lane can do that. One of the best ways to achieve that is by bringing the community and the DOT together to decide on which bike lanes are best and where they can be best installed in our neighborhoods.”

At the public forum, residents and cycling enthusiasts shared ideas and suggestions for ideal bike routes for the 26th District. The Council Member supports the expansion of bike lanes but believes residents of the community should have a say in their implementation throughout the community.

Fighting For Bus Service At PS 229 On February 29th, CM Van Bramer spoke to parents from the Big Six Towers who attended a CEC 24 meeting at PS 229 in Maspeth. Van Bramer blasted the DOE for denying a hazard variance which now forces students to cross over Laurel Hill Boulevard, which includes the on ramp to the Brooklyn/Queens Expressway.

“I refuse to sit idly by awaiting a tragedy while the DOE puts the safety of our children at risk,” said

The DOE’s reversal of policy eliminated bus service for students living in the Big Six Towers apartment complex in Woodside. The move has left the children who live in the Big Six with a dangerous route to PS 229, which involves crossing the service road of the Brooklyn/Queens Expressway and other high-traffic intersections.

Van Bramer has led rallies in effort to restore service for the children of the Big Six Towers.

New York Voters Support Health Insurance Exchange AARP released a poll finding voters age 30-64 to be in strong support of the governor’s executive budget proposal to establish a health benefit exchange. A majority of voters also believe that the state legislature should make it a top priority to pass a budget this year that includes the governor’s health insurance exchange.

“It is very clear that voters in an age group likely to turn to the health exchange when in need of insurance are in full support of Governor Cuomo’s proposal to create access to affordable options,” said Joan Parrott-Fonseca, AARP New York State Director.

Governor Cuomo has included a plan to establish a state health insurance exchange in his budget proposal this year. This proposal

estimates that the exchange would provide coverage for one million uninsured New Yorkers as well as reduce costs for individuals who purchase insurance through the exchange by 66% and for small businesses by 26%.

The major findings of the survey included the following: · Three out of five registered voters in New York age 30 to 64 support the governor’s plan to create a health insurance exchange. · Nearly two-thirds of respondents indicate that it should be a top or high priority for the state legislature to pass a budget this year that includes the governor’s health insurance exchange. · One out of eight New York registered voters age 30 to 64 responding to this survey say they

currently do not have any kind of health care coverage. Those who work for businesses with fewer than 50 employees are three times more likely to be without insurance coverage than those who work for business with 50 or more employees (25% vs. 8%). · Most New York registered voters age 30 to 64 who are currently insured are worried about increases in their premiums (80%) and are concerned they won’t be able to maintain their current health care coverage over the next five years (74%).

A similar proposal was introduced last year by the governor that passed the Assembly. However, the Senate failed to pass the bill last year.

Cracking Down On Repeat Offenders Continuing his efforts to combat sexual abuse, legislation that enhances safety from repeat sex offenders, sponsored in the Senate by Senator Michael Gianaris, has passed that chamber. This legislation closes a loophole in the current law so that individuals who commit persistent sexual abuse crimes are held fully responsible for their actions.

Bill S.6129, co-authored by Assemblymember Aravella Simotas, would exclude time spent in prison from the ten-year period in which the actions of a sex offender would be deemed “persistent sexual abuse.”

“Repeat sex offenders must be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” Senator Gianaris said. “By specifically directing the exclusion of any time during which a person

was incarcerated from the ten year look back period, this bill would more effectively hold the offender accountable under the law.”

The crime of persistent sexual abuse is intended to impose harsher penalties on criminals who commit certain sex crimes on multiple occasions during a ten-year period. Under current law, that ten-year period may include time during which the offender is incarcerated and unable to commit any crime. By discounting periods of incarceration, this bill would allow law enforcement to more fully comprehend the criminality of any sex offender.

This legislation has not yet gone to the Assembly floor for a vote. If passed in that chamber, it will be sent to the Governor for signing.

Once again the “Change for the Better” can collected donations for a worthy cause. This year’s collection went to Local 814’s strike fund whose workers have been locked out and had their health insurance coverage terminated on January 1st.

Much thanks to Peggy Feerick who makes the best soda bread and despite upping the number of loaves this year, not a crumb was left.

Attn: Council Member Van Bramer Dear Editor, I was very impressed with the bike forum sponsored by Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer on Saturday at SCS. I expected to speak, but realized that this forum was not really a forum for the general public. The attendees are well-

organized, and well-focused on their intent to impose their agenda, with little resistance, on NYC, with no cost but much benefit to them.

My question is: What about the rest of us?

The bikers are an influential minority. The rest of us are a silent and mute majority, with no opportunity to speak.

I urge you to sponsor an alternative public meeting, for those of us who have many concerns and objections to the free ride given to the bikers’ programs.

A Donation To An Agency That Gives So Much

The Sunnyside Reformed Church presented a check to Long Island City’s Hour Children on Monday morning. The Skillman Avenue congregation donated $250 to the 37th Avenue-based nonprofit, which provides an array of services — including housing, childcare, counseling, legal assistance and advocacy — to incarcerated women and their children. Seen in photo are (from left) John Jager, a church elder; Hour Children Executive Director Sister Tesa Fitzgerald; and Alessandra Rose, the agency’s director of development. Currently, Hour Children has five residences that house approximately 60 families each year.

‘Business Blueprint Series’ The Queens Economic Development Corporation in the upcoming weeks will offer four seminars on such topics as publicity, sales, advanced social media and business presentations as part of its ongoing Business Blueprint Series.

On March 14, Randy Shannon, who has over 14 years of experience as an internet marketing specialist, will lead the first seminar, “Advanced Social Media: Leveraging to Promote Your Business.” The founder of the web design/ development company Web Strategies will provide a primer on proven internet marketing strategies, cyber-misconceptions, long-term growth and tracking and social media.
