Sunnyside Woodside Lions Club COLLECTING FOR LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES By Luke Adams

The next few weekends before Thanksgiving and Christmas, members of the Sunnyside Woodside Lions Club are giving up their time off to volunteer in front of Foodtown, Associated and Butcher Block to help our local food pantries. “Local families want to celebrate the holidays with nice meals, even when they’ve been hit hard by the economy or other hardships,” said Norberto Saldana, Director for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and President of the Sunnyside Woodside Lions Club. “Unfortunately, it’s a really tough time now,” Norberto said. “Things are extremely tight for us.” Food donations are welcome, but Norberto and fellow Lion Members welcome more donors to consider giving

cash instead. That’s because pantries often can buy bulk quantities of food from food banks at steep discounts. For example, a box of cereal can cost about $2.50. But the food pantries pay about 20 cents for a 1-pound box of cereal, Soldana said. “I know it’s a lot to ask people to give monetary donations right now, but we can stretch that dollar a lot further when buying food,” Every penny raised is donated equality to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Teresa and St. Raphael Food pantry. Food is given to all people in need regardless of race, creed or religion. And all money raised stays in our community. We welcome all funds from dollars to pennies. Most important, we are grateful for our neighbors help and support. Giving to a fam-

ily in need will make your holiday a little more special knowing you helped give a holiday dinner to a family in your neighborhood!

So welcome these volunteers with a smile and a buck in their bag- it’s all staying in your community.

SUNNYSIDE KIWANIS CLUB HONORS LOCAL LEADERS On Sunday, November 7th Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside honored local leaders at their 63rd Anniversary Celebration. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. We are one of the largest community-service organizations dedicated primarily to helping the children of the world, with 600,000 adult and youth members in 8,400 clubs and more than 96 countries worldwide. Kiwanians are ordinary people who perform extraordinary “hands on” work. Our 270,000 adult members annually invest more than

6 million hours and $100 million in projects. Their purpose is to make Sunnyside a better community. That’s why each year they raise thousands of dollars - and use all of it to provide a long list of service projects and in support of many good causes. It’s a service club, and these people do these things week after week because they want to. The members of the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside work together and achieve what one person cannot acomplish alone. The focus is to make Sunnyside a better community to live and work.
