Well done everyone!

A fantastic day today of outdoor learning and Jubilee celebrations. From scarecrow competitions, team challenges, picnics and golf; everyone has had a lovely last day before half term. Wishing you all a fantastic break; enjoy your long bank holiday. See you on Monday 6th.

Nursery had a fantastic day out at Hesketh Farm Park. They fed the lambs, held guinea pigs and went out on a tractor and trailer. More photos on flickr. https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjzRENe

Reception's butterflies have finally hatched and were released into the wild flower area that has been planted in the grounds.

There has been quite a lot of activity in Ashdown since Easter; new flooring in Nursery, new outdoor artificial grass area and now a set of Ipads for the children to use. Pre Nursery have been using them this week as part of their technology development.

Key Stage 1 have been busy in Maths. Year 1 have been working practically to find half of numbers by sharing counters equally and Year 2 have been learning about capacity. They had to predict the capacity of different containers and then measure them using cups and water and make a block graph to show the results.

Today we say farewell to Miss Pratt who is leaving to have her baby. Nursery presented her with some flowers and wished her all the best! Reception have been baking crown biscuits this week for the Jubilee. They weighed and mixed the ingredients before cutting out the dough with a crown shaped cutter.

In KS1 STEM Club the challenge was to build a tower using pencils and teamwork! They started with a base of two pencils parallel to each other, and then added a level each time. The goal was to build super straight towers. The tallest tower measured 45cm.

Year 1 finished off their 'Animated Stories' unit in ICT by creating their own animated story using all of the features and techniques they have been learning about. They drew the characters, inserted a background, added animation to make the characters move, added sound and edited the text.

Year 4 have had fun investigating pitch in their Science lessons. We’ll name that tune in one!

Year 5 have been exploring forces in science; testing parachutes and streamlined shapes to see which were more effective against air and water resistance.

Year 2 have been making 3D model snakes as part of their On Safari Topic. They looked closely at the patterns and had to cut a tricky spiral to make their snake shape. They have also been exploring aboriginal art and created some lovely animal dot paintings.

Year 3 are enjoying reading ‘The Illustrated Atlas of Britain and Ireland’ in their reading lessons. This week they were focusing on the pages in the atlas about The South West and famous people linked with this area such as King Arthur, Mary Anning and Walter Raleigh.

Year 5 collaborated on an assembly about how each individual needs to play their part well, however small, in order to achieve ‘The Big Picture’. A celebration of individuals’ contributions to all that is Brontë House.

Year 6 Residential to Plas Menai, Wales Year 6 had an amazing time at Plas Menai in Wales. It was a fantastic finale to their time at Brontë House. The children got quite wet a lot of the time with windsurfing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. They challenged themselves with the leap of faith, climbing and gorge walking and cycled on mountain bikes to Caernarfon for a well deserved ice cream! All these pursuits, plus team activities in the evenings, meant they ate and slept well! Austin B said it was amazing, the gorge was the best thing I’ve ever done! Ben B said it was action packed, and it really was! Charlie C described the trip as spectacular and adventurous. Lots of photos of their week, now on flickr https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjzRF3k

Y5 and Y6 Athletics It was wonderful to see Brontë athletics back in action after so long. Year 5 and 6 athletes were hosted by GSAL in what was a very enjoyable and competitive meet. There were some excellent performances in both the track and field events. Judging by the standard, Sports Day will be very exciting.

Cricket Year 3 and 4 enjoyed their cricket match against Aysgarth last week in glorious sunshine at the Grove. Everyone batted and bowled really well, with 40 children involved in the fixture. Afterwards it was time to chat with our visitors over cookies and juice! Well done and well played everyone!

Congratulations to Sam Dowsland, Year 6, who has been selected for the U11 Taverners team to represent the Aire/ Wharfe cricket league against Taverners teams convened from other local cricket leagues. They will play fixtures in June.

We wish to let parents know that Alan Tipper, who worked at Brontë for 20 years before his retirement in 2018, very sadly passed away over the weekend. Mr Tipper was a member of our site team and ensured that the School buses entered and exited site safely. He also assisted with swimming and transporting children to the Grove and took hot food down to Ashdown Lodge each day. Many people remember the smiling gentleman who stood outside Brontë every morning as they drove past. Such a small act of kindness but so memorable and a strong statement for the values on which our school is built.
