Issue 26, October 2024

Recently, years 10, 11, and 12 have begun their exams.
It has been a stressful time for them as these exams will be ongoing up until the 14th of November with them doing their IGCSE, GCE AS & A level, and SINF6SC exams
With scheduled times, they have been studying hard every chance they get
Welcome back to school, we are now in our final term for the year! Unfortunately due to exams, our issues may be late and/or irregular as we have no new recruits yet.
Also, please keep you and your families safe from any potential dangers !
With Cambridge’s strict policy, these students are trying their hardest to participate in these exams as you would be unable to resit the exam in fear of the possibility of getting answers from peers who have already taken the exam.
So, in order to at least get a grade, you must send in an email with the reason you are unable to sit for the exam (E g You are sick)
If you are sick, you have to send in an official medical report from the clinic/hospital you went to regarding all the necessary details of your sickness for the school to apply for the special consideration if you were fully prepared to take said exam(s) and covered the full course.
However, this application must be sent within the first seven days in order for Cambridge to make their assessments and inform Woodford if it is accepted for the special consideration.
After that brief explanation, please wish our students good luck with their studies and wish them well as they take their exams

Over the previous holiday, a group of four students and two teachers had gone to Athens Greece to participate in the First Global Robotics Challenge representing Solomon Islands.
Chris Jr Tony, LangYing Zhu, Lizelle Tupiti, and Leander Roosen, along with their supportive mechanics team, set off to Athens, Greece on September 23rd
It was a long ride there, from Solo to Brisbane, Brisbane to Dubai, before finally reaching their destination
The competition ran from the 26th to the 29th, with this year's theme, "Feeding the Future," challenging teams to build a robot that uses energy and water to create and store food
Special thanks to Mr. Kevin Atkinson and our mentors for their guidance and help to make the best robot they can in order to proudly represent WIS and the Solomon Islands.

As you all may already know from the email sent out about the current incidents happening around town, we would like to strongly remind you that you are only allowed to enter the school to pick up / drop off your kids if you have an ID on hand for the safety of the students There is also a new signing out step you must follow for extra precaution. We would also like to encourage you to briefly explain to your kids to make sure they are well aware of what is happening and able to be a bit more conscious about approaching anyone they don’t recognise inside and outside of the school.
Please stay safe and take care of yourself !

We would like to acknowledge our current year 12 members who joined The Drums last year; Aiden Kenilorea, Alicia Barsby Peters, and Tanya Yee, who will be graduating this year
Aiden is our second editor, a very reliable person who was always sure to help out in any way He always let us know whether he would be available or not to help edit, and always made sure to thank and congratulate everyone once the issue was released.
Alicia is one of our writers. She was mainly the one we went to for events that happened in Honiara nobody else seemed to attend or know about and she always delivered it when she could.
Another reliable writer we have is Tanya. She was always up to date with our meetings and tried her best to come up with ideas to write about when everything else seemed a bit boring She’s also someone who tries to have good communication within the group
We would also like to thank Eldie who was also there to help out whenever help was needed. She wasn’t an official member of The Drum, but she seemed to come to a lot of meetings and helped her fellow classmates with their articles.
Thank you, year 12s for being part of the drums this year, we hope you succeed in whatever you go forward with in life.

Hurricane Milton reached Category 5 with 180 mph winds and a pressure of 897 mbar, making it one of the most intense Atlantic storms on record.
It rapidly intensified due to warm Gulf waters and low wind shear before weakening slightly and making landfall in Florida as a Category 3, causing significant damage

Rare floods in the Sahara Desert created lakes among the sand dunes after an intense two-day rainstorm in southeast Morocco.
Normally receiving minimal rainfall, the region saw nearly 8 inches of rain in September, triggered by a low-pressure system, as shown by NASA satellite data.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to come together in the fight against breast cancer. By raising awareness, supporting research, and sharing stories of hope, we can help save lives Early detection is key, so encourage loved ones to get screened Let’s honor the survivors, support those still fighting, and remember those we’ve lost Wear pink this month to show solidarity and spread the message. Together, we can make a difference.

After our exams, the following week will be dedicated towards our high-school students going out for work experience in fields they are interested in.
- Engineering
- Law
- Medicine
- Chemistry
- Teaching
You name it!
With offers from places like FFA, Solomon Airlines, and private clinics, our students will be able to experience firsthand the jobs they are studying towards.
With the exams ending around week 7, by week 8, it should begin
To be ahead with schedules and preparations, students have already been handing in where they would like to work in order to get a response on time.
Please keep an eye out for any familiar faces if you happen to see them wandering around their temporary work place, greet them with a smile, and treat them nicely.
It’s the first time for a lot of them, they might be a little unsettled

Recently there has been another great event: The year 5 exhibition!
Our year 5’s were teamed up and have been doing interviews and doing intense research on their assigned topics this year and setting up their information booths for their big night on the 16th of October!
They’ve done a wonderful job and will be moving out of primary and into their first year of middle school
Good luck, and welcome to secondary school!
