THE DRUM @WOODFORD
Issue 30, 24-28th April 2025

By Kilifi Ruaia
A month ago, our secondary students attended another one of Woodford’s most important and highly anticipated events: Camp! Spending 3 days and 2 nights full of activities and meaningful community services on a designated site.
Welcome!
Apologies for the late updates!
It’s now the second term, and we’re already almost half-way through the school year!
Starting on the upcoming issue, The Drum will officially be handed down to our new members - who will run the school newspaper!
The Camp began from 19th to the 21st of march (Wednesday to friday, Term 1, Week 9 2025), where they all gathered at around 12am to depart and arrive back at 3pm on friday
This Year's Camp included many community services from some of our classes Take for example the Year 9s, who all contributed money to provide school supplies to aruligo School.
There is no doubt that this year’s camp had helped teach the
students of woodford valuable life skills, including the importance of hard work, and especially empathy and kindness towards our local communities

Recently the school has hosted the annual 3v3 basketball games on the days;
- Wednesday 9th of April
- Wednesday 15th of April
- And Thursday 18th of April
Where selected schools are invited to play against one another in a small tournament.
Our boys unfortunately lost their first game, but our girls didn’t!
Against St. Nics, the girls managed to win with a close game of 8 points to 6
On the final day, the boys played two more games, but unfortunately the girls were taken out due to lack of teammates coming on Good Friday to play.
In the end, the girls walked away with the bronze medal for third place.

The ‘Girls in ICT day’ is an event that occurs on the 24th of April every year This year’s event will be hosted at ‘Solomon Kitano Mendana Hotel’ following this year's theme: "Girls in ICT for inclusive digital transformation," emphasizing the role of women in shaping a more equitable digital future.
Only a few selected students from our highschool district have been chosen for this outing, particularly the girls who arrived early at the venue, alongside other female students from other schools The Robotics team was also involved in this event, showcasing their robot and what it means to be a part of the team. The girls were the first to depart at 9am and arrive back in the evening, 3pm
While the robotics team quickly followed, arriving at 1pm in time for their presentation This event will surely provide valuable insights and opportunities for our students to:
- Showcase their robotic projects and creativity
- Engage with professionals in the ICT sector
- Build confidence and communication skills through public demonstration and
- Be inspired to pursue careers in technology and innovation.
With that, we are thrilled for this exciting opportunity to participate in this event Offering our students a chance to dive into the world of ICT and possibly, even be inspired to consider careers in this field.

Helium can escape Earth's gravity. Because it's so light, helium atoms can actually reach escape velocity and drift off into space. That's why helium is a non-renewable resource!
Your body is made of stardust. Almost every element in your body was formed in the core of a star heavier elements (like iron) were made in supernovae explosions

Water can boil and freeze at the same time.
This happens at the "triple point" a specific temperature and pressure where the three phases of a substance (solid, liquid, gas) coexist.
Bananas are naturally radioactive. They contain potassium-40, a naturally occurring isotope of potassium But don’t worry, you'd need to eat millions of bananas at once for it to be harmful.
Hot water freezes faster than cold water sometimes.
Known as the Mpemba effect, under certain conditions, hot water an freeze more quickly than cold. Scientists are still trying to fully understand why.
Glass is technically a very slow-flowing liquid.
Though it looks solid, glass doesn't have a crystalline structure it's an amorphous solid, which behaves like a super slow liquid
The only letter not in the periodic table is J
Every other letter of the alphabet appears in the symbols of chemical elements but not J!

If you intend to follow through with Cambridge and graduate Woodford, I suggest you read this!
No one can stress enough how hard the course is, and when they say to start studying, they mean it
If you’re still in middle-school (6-8) then start coming up with your study schedules – discipline yourself to have set amounts of time dedicated to studying. Trust me, it’ll be hard once you get to Year 9.
And if you’ve already started year 9, don’t procrastinate! Your exams aren’t gonna wait for you to catch up. You need to start studying the moment you start High-school, because everything will escalate too fast for you to go back and revise from the start, let alone when you’re in year 11 and trying to jump back to year 9
But just remember, study now so you don’t regret it later!
