The Muchnick and Marcus Families are proud to support the Woodbury Ball for Autism

April 20th, 2017

Dear Woodbury Ball supporter, I am a working mother off two typical children. Granted, they are anything but “typical” but this is a word a mother off a child with autism aspires to. Those who are not touched by the cause in some way truly cannot appreciate the heartache many off these children and their families face and the magnitude in which they truly need the support off everyone around them. When launching Woodbury magazine in 2003, giving back was—and always will be—at the core off our mission statement. As life progressed and brought its challenges, autism touched my family, alongside the one in 45, according to a recent study, children diagnosed today. I have been incredibly fortunate to spend time and create friendships with some off the most incredible mothers off children with autism whose strength surpass any and every expectation. I can’t possibly relate to how they feel or what they are met with when they return home. They travel through their day with heads held so high they make it easy to forget the reality off their world which shamefully allows us “typical parents” to sometimes forget. It is out off my interest to support these women, their children and families that the Woodbury Ball for Autism was created. What’s more, it is people like you who have made giving back through this event possible. Your support off the 14th annual Woodbury Ball for Autism and its JOURNAL OF HOPE is literally creating programs on the North Shore that allow these children to be a part off something so very special. “Without North Shore Autism Circle, my child would have nowhere to go after school. The phone doesn’t ring for my child and these programs offer one off the few things that bring a smile to my son’s face,” said one mother. Along with North Shore Autism Circle, 100% off the proceeds are shared with Autism Speaks Long Island, The Adler Center for Special Needs at the Mid-Island Y JCC and Family Center for Autism. This is why we are here; to give these children and their families a chance at life-changing therapy and all the support we possibly can. Early intervention can be crucial to a child’s development and the Woodbury Ball for Autism gives us the power to help bring that opportunity to others. The Woodbury Ball also allows us to pay tribute to the leaders in our community making a difference. Thank you to Peter Klein, Edward Nitkewicz, Todd Richman and Debora Thivierge for accepting this well-deserved honor; your tireless efforts to support those in need inspire us all. That said, I’d like to take a moment to thank our production partners and tremendous team of volunteers; without whom this could not be the success it is today. Standouts for the cause worthy off tremendous gratitude are Amy Greenberg, Kristin Schlossman, Ginny Connell, Deborah Horn, Rachael Klein, Stacey Gottlieb, Jocelyn Wasserman, Hedy Waserman, Regina Grange and my outstanding husband, Jonathan Cohen, among others. Thank you to all for being a part off this very special initiativee. Whether reading this as a guest off the event, a journal supporterr, sponsor, an auction donor or simply because you make a habit off reading journals to be sure to notice those in your community who o are truly giving back, it is you we have to thank for making one off my most important personal and professional missions come to life; making a difference. Sincerely,

Jennifer Polansky l k Editor-in-Chief, Woodbury magazine

Me with my amazing nephew S Spencer; my inspiration i i i to support the cause and proof that early intervention can make all the difference.

I am grateful and humbled by this honor, and I accept this recognition on behalf of all the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandparents and friends who struggle every day to ďŹ ght for a better quality of life for their families. Creating ELIJA and supporting those going through this very difficult and challenging journey has been one of the most important and deďŹ ning experiences of my life. Through the efforts of our school, foundation, and now farm, ELIJA represents a model of excellence and hope for the Autism community. It also represents, at its core, a community and family central to my heart. I travel this journey with you every day and will always be here to hold your hands because so many of you have held mine. We must continue to think like venture philanthropists and invest in our children’s futures because it is what we truly need to ensure both their quality of life and hope for their families.

North Shore Autism Circle is forever grateful to Jennifer Polansky and Woodbury Magazine for sponsoring the Woodbury Ball for Autism now in its 14th year. Simply Amazing!! Thank you for making a difference in the staggering 1 out of 45 children diagnosed with Autism. Thanks to the committee members and volunteers that have worked tirelessly on this event and this amazing journal. To our charity partners, Autism Speaks Long Island , Family Center for Autism and The Adler Center for Special Needs we are thankful for the amazing programs you have available for the Autism population. You provide safe, warm and nurturing environments for children to attend recreational, socialization and peer mentoring classes such as Swim , Camp, Yoga, Zumba and Cooking to name a few, what's better than that ?? To this year's four honorees, leaders that move mountains and advocate for the Autism community: Debora Thivierge, Edward Nitkewicz, Todd Richman and Peter Klein, we are so lucky to have you in our court. North Shore Autism Circle is thankful to our supporters that have allowed us to supply grants to life skills, vocational programs and businesses that employ individuals with Autism. As Autistic children become Autistic adults and age out of school, it is critical that we set up these individuals to be productive members of society. On a personal note, I am sending hugs and well wishes to friends that have dealt with some personal challenges with their special needs children whether it be living arrangements, educational placements, health issues and more. We are thrown curve balls each and every day and parents of special needs children are true warriors in every sense of the word. As I look out the window watching this crazy snowy March day I look forward to a spectacular summer. Stay tuned for more information on our 8th Annual Holes for Hope event in August, you won't want to miss it! Visit us at www.northshoreautismcircle.org

DEBORA THIVIERGE – MOM My mother is the most amazing woman I have ever met. She is an inspiration to me because she didn't just follow a path, she created one. She is the strongest person I know, and I know a lot of people. She does everything for me and my family; my mother is my superhero. She does the impossible. She can create opportunities from her powerful words and determination. I know no other person on this planet that is as dedicated to her craft as much as my mother is. She can and she will do anything to get what she wants, and to mirror my step mother with a quote: Though she be but little, she is fierce"- Shakespeare

Congratulations Mom, you are the biggest inspiration in the entire world. I love you more than words can comprehend. With much love, Sabrina Harris & Jason Harris
