April 15th, 2016

Dear Woodbury Ball supporter,

I am a working mother of two typical children. Granted, they are anything but “typical” but this is a word a mother of a child with autism aspires to. Those who are not touched by the cause in some way truly cannot appreciate the heartache many of these children and their families face and the magnitude in which they truly need the support of everyone around them. When launching Woodbury magazine in 2003, giving back was—and always will be—at the core of our mission statement. As life progressed and brought its challenges, autism touched my family, alongside the one in 45, according to a recent study, children diagnosed today. I have been incredibly fortunate to spend time and create friendships with some of the most incredible mothers of children with autism whose strength surpass any and every expectation. I can’t possibly relate to how they feel or what they are met with when they return home. They travel through their day with heads held so high they make it easy to forget the reality of their world which shamefully allows us “typical parents” to sometimes forget. It is out of my interest to support these women, their children and families that the Woodbury Ball for Autism was created. What’s more, it is people like you who have made giving back through this event possible. Your support of the 13th annual Woodbury Ball for Autism and its JOURNAL OF HOPE is literally creating programs on the North Shore that allow these children to be a part of something so very special. “Without North Shore Autism Circle, my child would have nowhere to go after school. The phone doesn’t ring for my child and these programs offer one of the few things that bring a smile to my son’s face,” said one mother. Along with North Shore Autism Circle, 100% of the proceeds are shared with Autism Speaks Long Island, The Adler Center for Special Needs at the Mid-Island Y JCC and Family Center for Autism. This is why we are here; to give these children and their families a chance at life-changing therapy and all the support we possibly can. Early intervention can be crucial to a child’s development and the Woodbury Ball for Autism gives us the power to help bring that opportunity to others. I am so very grateful for the countless partners and volunteers we were so very fortunate to have on board and without whom this could not be the success it is today. To highlight a special thank you to those who truly went above and well beyond the standard call of duty: Amy Greenberg, Lori Hason, Kristin Schlossman, Ginny Connell, Deborah Horn, Stacey Gottlieb, Rachael Klein, Regina Grange, Nicole Soko, Samantha Newman, Jocelyn Wasserman, Hedy Wasserman, my outstanding husband, Jonathan Cohen, and the list goes on. That said, I can’t thank you enough for being a part of this very special initiative. Whether reading this as a guest of the event, a journal supporter, sponsor, an auction donor or simply because you make a habit of reading journals to be sure to notice those in your community who are truly giving back, it is you we have to thank for making one of my most important personal and professional missions come to life; making a difference.

Me with my amazing nephew Spencer; my inspiration to support the cause and proof that early intervention can make all the difference.

Autism at 18 Dear Hannah: Daddy, Drew and I are so proud of the teenage girl that you have become. I am forbidden to say the words young woman because that makes you unhappy, as do phrases like come here, and look at me, or the mention of Chinese food or the doctor or dentist. It baffles me that this Autism causes such a frustration in your mind and we have to be careful about what we say. You have made such huge strides this year. We are so proud in your increase in language and how you now speak in impromptu complete sentences. We love your infectious giggle and your zest for life. Anyone who has had the chance to know you realizes you are one special human being. 18 is a bittersweet year, as we deal with guardianship, social security and planning your future. I'm not going to lie when I tell you I'm always nervous for your safety and wellbeing. We will continuing advocating for you and all your needs because that is what parents are supposed to do. As your mom, I'm a little disappointed that most members of your graduating class are driving, going off to college, while you are not experiencing these things...yet. I am happy though that you get to go to the senior party and the senior prom and enjoy your time with your friends that have stood by your side from elementary school until now. We have big hopes and dreams for you, our beautiful BeyoncĂŠ, Bee Bee, Hannah Banana, blue eyed princess because we know you can do anything that you set your mind to doing. We will always believe in you. You are our inspiration, and you inspire many others who are involved in the North Shore Autism Circle. Thank you for being part of our lives. The world would be an emptier place if you weren't part of it. We Will Love You Forever! Mommy, Daddy and Drew
