Announcing the Course Standing Clock Fundraiser

Dear Valued Members,

The Board has heard your requests for a standing clock near the putting green. While the Long-Range Planning Committee has classified it as a “want” rather than a “need,” we remain committed to making it a reality—without using capital-dues funds—through the fundraising efforts we began last year.

Very soon, you’ll have a unique chance to help bring this project to life and create a lasting legacy: members who donate $500 will have their names engraved on bricks that will form the clock’s base—a permanent tribute to your support.

The brick-engraving company is still finalizing its online storefront, so the donation page isn’t live just yet. As soon as it’s ready, we’ll share the link and simple instructions for submitting your gift and custom inscription.

In the meantime, please watch your email and the weekly bulletin for the official launch date. If you have any immediate questions, feel free to reach out to Ryan Bill.

Thank you for your enthusiasm and for helping make Woodbridge even more special for generations to come.

Warm regards,

PHASE 3 RENOVATIONS BEGIN THIS MONTH

We are excited to announce that Phase 3 of our Clubhouse renovation project is underway. This phase will give a well-deserved facelift to our locker rooms, restrooms, and card rooms, further enhancing comfort and style for members and guests.

Over the next 30 days we will modernize the existing Men’s card room with:

Vertical Hinge

Though less common today, the vertical hinge—often referred to as “cupped”—has the toe of the club pointing downward at the top of the swing, creating an open face. While not widely taught, it’s been effective for elite players like Ben Hogan and current world number one Scottie Scheffler.

Finding the Right Hinge for Your Swing

As we’ve discussed in previous articles, every golfer’s body moves differently. Your ideal wrist hinge lies on a spectrum—with purely horizontal and purely vertical on opposite ends. Most golfers fall somewhere in between.

To determine your natural hinge, I use the Orange Whip Trainer. I have students grip the trainer and resist its flex in each of the three hinge directions. This helps identify which hinge direction allows them to engage the ground effectively and control the club naturally.

When a golfer uses their natural hinge, several benefits follow:

• Reduced injury risk

• Increased clubhead speed

• Better ground engagement and balance

Key Wrist Movement Facts Among Great Ball Strikers

Understanding what happens with the wrists during the swing can provide even more clarity:

1. At the top of the swing, the left wrist moves toward extension (a more cupped position), even in players with significantly bowed wrists like Morikawa.

2. In the transition into the downswing, the wrist begins to move toward flexion (away from the cupped position). Even vertical hinging players like Hogan follow this pattern.

3. At impact, the wrist moves back toward extension. While the lead wrist may appear flat at impact, it’s actually transitioning—helping to “release” the club and maximize speed.

By understanding your body’s natural tendencies and the dynamics of wrist motion, you can develop a swing that’s both efficient and sustainable. Instead of chasing trends, focus on finding what works best for you—and let that guide your improvement.

Coming Up in May

Stroke play, a scramble, “4 Pars Only,” and a Best Ball format are on the docket. If you enjoy creative games, lively conversation, and a tasty post-round lunch, join us Thursday mornings—sign up through the Pro Shop.

See you on the course!

Woodbridge WNHGA Winners Update

The Woodbridge WNHGA Winners opened the 9-hole 2025 Team Play season with a hard-fought match against Valley Hi, earning 7 valuable points despite the challenging weather. Nancy Little powered through the 35 sand traps that guard El Macero’s back nine, while Cindy Ciboch battled a patch of cactus—thanks to Dr. Nancy for the quick spine removal! Looking ahead, Captain Melissa Krebill is eager to lead the team into their next matchup against North Ridge.

Thursday Night Ladies Tee Off in Style

Thursday evenings opened with plenty of buzz as Carol Carr rolled in the winning putt to capture the Kickoff Putting Contest, instantly setting the tone for the season. Carr kept the momentum going, guiding teammates Sharon Daegling, Nancy Little, and Melissa Krebill to claim the very first Scramble victory of 2025.

Want in on the action? Next week’s game switches to a Stableford Scramble—a friendly, points-based format that’s fun for every skill level. Sign up in the Golf Shop and join the Thursday-night excitement!
