How did you get started in the beauty industry?

I started in the beauty industry initially as a model for cosmetic companies. I did a major campaign for the brand, Murad that was seen globally. It was my first taste and exposure to this industry.

Being a model impacted my self-esteem negatively when I was younger. The no's I got were so loud and my success seemed so small. Partner that feeling I had as a young woman with my fascination with beauty products drove me to start The Girl Cave LA.

The Girl Cave LA is the largest black-owned beauty supply chain in the country now (which wasn't my goal when I started it.) With The Girl Cave, LA I promote a realistic standard of beauty. We offer a large range of options so no woman feels the pressure to replicate a trend ... I want women to be the best version of themselves!

What is the Best Business advice you've ever been told & why?

One of my mentors told me that the most important decision I will make in life as a full-time entrepreneur will be who my life partner is. The person you decide to be in a committed relationship with or marry will impact you as a businessperson more than anyone in your life. You can have the best team in the world, but if you go home to someone who doesn't fully support you, see you, and have your best interest in mind it will impact you most negatively.

You are an incredibly busy BOSS on many levels, how do you juggle it all? Can you truly have a balance? If so, how?

It's my opinion that balance does not exist when you are building and scaling a business like I am. There is an obsession that has to occur in order to cross the finish line. That doesn't mean that I don't eat or sleep or take vacations. It means that my life revolves around my business during this season of my life. I am okay with it and juggle as much as I can because I am excited about what I am doing. I suppose in the near future I will have a different answer, but this is where I am right now.

Pet Peeves- What is a deal breaker for you when conducting business?

I won't do business with anyone that doesn't have skin in the game. We both have to have something to lose in order for me to work with someone. My deal breaker is when someone does not want to equally contribute to an opportunity. That is an immediate red flag and deal breaker for me.

What's Next for Your Empire in 2023?

It's ALL things Hype Hair in 2023. I have plans to expand our reach globally with more content, more events, and more everything!!!!

You are the definition of #Mompreneur! What is your fondest memory with your children?

I love traveling with my children! One of my fondest memories was going to Italy with them. It was so much fun, and they had the most amazing experience.

Tell our audience more about your Nonprofit. Who does it support and how can we support your efforts?

I am a survivor of domestic violence, and my non-profit Hype Hair Cares is the vehicle I use to support that cause.

Domestic violence is a very complicated issue, especially for Black women. Statistically, we are less likely to be believed during reports to law enforcement and in courtrooms. Often times our mental well-being, finances, and custody of our children are adversely impacted more than any other group. I have experienced the daunting process of leaving a violent marriage and then facing the obstacle of navigating the court system. It's not easy!

Hype Hair Cares was founded with the mission to support families during the process of transitioning from domestic violence victims to survivors.

How would you describe yourself in 5 words?

Resilient, resourceful, strategic, spontaneous, and direct.

We all have Dreams! Where is your DREAM Destination? Africa! I will be taking the trip in 2023 for sure.

Every Queen has Must-Have beauty products or regimen. What's your Top 3 Must-Haves/ Daily Beauty Regimen?

I love Yelle skin care by Yandy. The toner is a must have. It's amazing. I even take it with me when I travel. I struggle with hyperpigmentation, so sunscreen is also a must-have.

I use Black Girl Sunscreen. It's lightweight and can be worn under makeup. The older I get the more I see the need for under-eye products. I have gone thru 100 this year, but my favorite is Topicals under eye masks.

Outside of your Children, what makes you smile?

If I can be totally transparent, making money does! Seriously, when I see the people around me living in their purpose and thriving that makes me smile the most.

Their recently concluded Women Win AllStars Beauty & The Bank virtual live event left attendees craving more from their dynamic panel and a speaker line-up featuring: Dr. Nakita Davis, Dr. Dionne Greaves, Dr. Cynthia Videau, Dr. Josel Doyle, Sheraton Gatlin, and Shevonne Rumph These fully vetted Powerhouse Queens are truly the experts that you need to know!

This dynamic tribe of trailblazers are crushing it in their Speaker, Author, Girlboss businesses and dominating their respective industries: Public Relations, Business, Beauty, Real Estate, Entrepreneurship, Graphics/Web Design, and Publishing.

The event kicked off with a candid panel discussion “Beauty is Skin Deep” followed by prolific speakers who shared tips, tools, and strategies specifically designed to help women soar in their businesses. Featured Speaker and Celebrity Makeup Artist Sheraton Gatlin reminded the audience that being fully aligned in their mind, body, and soul was key to getting to the bank.

The first Keynote Speaker for the evening, Dr. Cynthia Videau left the audience with tangible tips on how they can authentically share their story – even the most difficult moments – without tarnishing their brand. She was followed by Dr. Dionne Greaves who reminded the audience of the importance of being surrounded by the right people as they build their business. Dr. Nakita Davis brought down the curtain on the evening with her keynote speech “Beauty in Brokenness”.

While things were heating up on the virtual stage, an epic billboard featuring these Queens was dropped in Atlanta, Georgia thanks to, the Billboard Queen and PR Guru – the incomparable – Dr. Nakita Davis.
