Editor’s Note

The holiday season is upon us once again and

there is magic in the air. I can feel the excitement building all around me, especially when I am around my little guy. He is super charged with enthusiasm and energy and it is absolutely infectious. This kid makes ME feel like a kid again and it really is incredible. I love every moment spent with my little man. I have most of my shopping done with just a few last minute gifts to buy. I am pretty proud of myself this year as I am ahead of the game, which is a little unusual for me lol. The house is looking very festive, my Xmas cookies and treats are complete and our Christmas Tree is sparkling with pretty bulbs and glowing with twinkling lights. It feels so peaceful. It is a feeling that captures my heart every year. A feeling of pure Joy!

ecember has arrived and like every year the cookie baking season has begun. The history of Christmas cookies can be traced back to recipes from Medieval Europe. During that time many new ingredients were introduced to the west such as cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, black pepper, almonds and dried fruits. These ingredients were highly prized and families could only afford to incorporate them into baked goods during the most important holidays and that led to extensive baking during Christmas. By the 16th century Christmas cookies had become popular across Europe and families baked up cookies in various sizes and shapes related to Christmas. They were then shared with friends, family and neighbours. Gingerbread is the most famous Christmas cookie in Germany and it has evolved over the years into a cake like pastry. Its origin dates back to the crusades when soldiers brought spices back to Europe. Eventually it became associated with Christmas when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert included it with a variety of other German Christmas traditions. In the 17th century German and Dutch settlers introduced cookie cutters and decorative molds to the USA. The availability of these utensils facilitated the increase in recipes in popular cookbooks. The cookie baking tradition has come a long way, but certain things never change. Our modern Christmas cookies still contain the traditional spices. It is the most wonderful time of the year and we are ready to bake the next batch.

Tis the Season For Baking a holiday tradition

or me, Christmas comes alive when I smell cookies and treats baking in the oven. The divine smell of chocolate and cinnamon in the house is completely hypnotizing and instantly overwhelms me with Christmas joy. It’s a feeling of pure contentment. Ok and yes the fact that I get to eat many of these treats does put a huge smile on my face too! I have a profound love of sweets so my excitement is ten fold. Christmas, for me, would not be complete without baking holiday treats. I absolutely love it! I have collected all of my ingredients, my bowls and measuring gadgets are ready and my little elf helper is by my side. Christmas doesn’t get any better! Merry Christmas everyone.

Reaching for Heaven this Holiday Season Madeline Deguilio

T

he change of seasons brings a significant shift of feeling and sensation. For many of us, it is a time that resonates on the same frequency as grief. After our loved ones cross over, they are very anxious to let us know they are okay. They are aware of what is going on in our lives. So leave an open seat at the table this holiday season for your loved ones in heaven. If you’ve ever lost someone you love—whether there was time to prepare, or their death came with no time to brace—you probably realize that grief is one of the hardest things we ever face. The change of seasons brings a significant shift of feeling and sensation. We never lose the ones we love as long as you keep that energy, We might try and even succeed in shielding our grief from others. Light begins to enter through the window to remind us that our loved ones can still see and hear us and are just a thought away. Loved ones will often let us know that they are right there celebrating with us by the many different “signs” they will give us. I always tell my clients that they do not have to look for signs – the signs will come to them.

All we need to do is to ask them to come, and they will. Dreams that are comforting, visions of a loved one, telepathic thoughts, pets and children can see spirits. Pets will visit us from Heaven too, Coins that mysteriously appear out of thin air. Most of us just brush aside gentle attempts at communication as imaginary..I believe they are a gift from God’s heart to replace our heart’s sorrow with tender moments of joy. While I don’t know where you are on your journey, I hope you’re starting to see some light sneaking into your days. If so, or even if you’re not there yet, take a few moments and write about it in your journal. You are not alone. Whatever you’re feeling right now ... sadness, anger, fatigue, joy, confusion, relief ... getting the emotions out of your heart and onto paper can really help. Healing is far more complete and powerful if we play an active role in it, so is our connection to spirit, to God. It’s always the perfect day to write the letter, make the call, or visit the people you love most. We look everywhere except within for a relationship or connection with the divine. Our relationship with God (or whatever you wish to call it) is one of the most critical relationships we will ever have. It is ours alone to nurture and grow, although we are certainly free to seek out help and advice along the way.

Women Rock Magazine | 12

Remember, nothing dies except the physical body. When I think back on what I expected of myself in the years after my Grandmother died, I often wish I could go back and do it differently. I don’t want to relive that time of acute grief, but I wish I could go back and hold myself in a softer way and be more tender to the part of me that died, too. I was a new person because of this loss and all that happened around that time. Yet, I kept striving to feel stronger and more back-to-normal than I felt. As I’ve been reflecting on this, some things have come clear for me about what I would do differently or if I could turn back the wheel of time. I felt cradled in an embrace of acceptance, realizing that we had both done the best we could. I felt a wave of peace envelop my entire being. I am reminded that we are all a part of this cycle, our laughter and our cries adding to the drone. I embraced this rare opportunity to step outside my comfort zone. Do the grief-related emotions ever make you feel a little crazy? I wish someone had told me, “You are not going crazy, you are grieving.” That’s true for you, too. We’re put in each other’s lives at just the right moment, in just the right place. Perhaps it’s the orchestration of angels. It’s all around you if you’ll pay attention.

Reaching for Heaven this Holiday Season Madeline Deguilio

I’m grateful for my origins and extend my gratitude in all directions, honouring the wisdom my grandmother shared with me. Embracing the pain, grief, and acceptance arising from my grandmothers death, while acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead. I stand with a sense of sovereignty, alongside the guides, teachers, and friends who have supported me thus far. I’m reminded that all of our stories are important. Our narratives, marked by transformation and healing, are the threads that weave the tapestry of human connection. Through openness and vulnerability, we pave the way for others to find solace and inspiration in their own experiences. I continue forward, my heart brimming with gratitude for the profound gifts of acceptance and reconciliation, both with myself. I extend a compassionate reminder to those who seek healing, understanding, and connection, for in our stories, we find the common thread that binds us all. They really are okay and want you to be too!

ACT TO GROW By Lori Chenger

The time is YOU. Are you ready to act to grow? It is often a common theme that people tend to believe and many people echo “I am running out of time”. What if it is not that you are running out of time, but rather “running into time? “You may believe you have made too many mistakes, missed your chance, or that you are told now to create your dreams and turn them into reality. What if you have not missed out, but it was just not your time yet? If what you had really thought you had desired manifested too early, or it came from a place of fear, worry, or lack; you may then stand in your own way of feeling the true value and meaning of your manifestation. Your life plan can really be three simple steps: • Choose the feelings you want to feel and be consistent with those choices. • Work at what gives you those feelings, identify the tasks, hobbies, careers, people, etc. Keep those feelings you wish to experience as your consistent and dominate thoughts. • Structure and prioritize your life around creating those feelings. It really can be that simple. The mind’s job is to over complicate to keep you safe. Our paths are shaped by our wounds and beliefs. We need to let go of the unconscious path of “fixing“ ourselves and focus on the super-conscious path of healing, accepting ourselves, and learning to appreciate the wisdom of our pain. We are not “broken,” - machines and systems are broken, we are people who need healing. December marks the time of winter solace which in ancient times was seen as symbolisms for death and rebirth. Is it time to allow your fears to die? As we move into the new year, it is my wish for you to “GIVE IN”. Give in to the new you waiting to emerge as you let go of old thoughts, feelings, and patterns of behavior that no longer serve you.

This technique clears chakras to have better alignment in all aspects of your health and life, finds the “stuck” programming of old thoughts that are preventing us from moving forward in our current reality, and provides peace and freedom as we find the ease of letting go of old wounds and pain stories. This process involves finding your hidden beliefs, muscle testing, breath work, and re-affirming from the positive so that we can see the gift of our pain. Hello Readers, It’s so wonderful to meet you and to be a part of this amazing community of Women Empowering Women!

Christina Deslauriers

L

et me tell you a little bit about myself. I’m Christina Deslauriers, the owner/operator and an instructor, for Beyond Your Limits Program located in Ottawa, Ontario. We are a program for Neuro Diverse Adults and or Adults with disabilities.

I have been working in this field for over 25 years. Most of my career was spent being an Educational Assistant for elementary schools. Long story short, I injured myself on an outdoor recess duty and was off work recovering from my injuries. At some point on this journey, I was told that I wouldn’t be able to do the physicality of my job unless I was 100% better. But at the point, it most likely wasn’t going to happen. So, that got me thinking about how I could use my skillset, and perhaps start my own program to support this wonderful community that I had loved and been so passionate working with. There were of course a few bumps along the way, a whole lot of learning curves, determination, hard work and oh my goodness let’s not forget “Covid” (in which I had to create new ways to teach and pivot from an in-person program to an online program), but WE did it! And as they say…the rest is history!

I am so grateful to be able to support this community and I feel very blessed to have these beautiful people in my life. What we offer today is a Groundbreaking Program for Adults with developmental disabilities: Uniting Virtual and In-Person Experiences! International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3) is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. It has been observed with varying degrees of success around the planet. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. source from un.org

“The only true disability is the inability to accept and respect differences.”

“We are all different. There is no such thing as a standard or runof-the-mill human being, but we share the same human spirit.”

“I don’t suffer from my disability. I suffer from the attitudes that society has towards it.”

ou’ve finished your novel and you’re anxious to hold the physical book in your hands. I’ve got good news and bad news.

The good news first: not everyone who sets out to write a novel succeeds, and you’ve done it! Congratulations! Give yourself a pat on the shoulder. You deserve it. The bad news: Your final full stop at the end of the last sentence is no indication that your novel is finished, completed, and ready for publication unless you’ve revised, edited, and polished your manuscript at least three times.

If you haven’t done so, let me give you several tips to guide you through the process without losing enthusiasm. First of all, distance yourself from your work. Take a long break. During that time, start drafting your next novel. Back to your manuscript: an excellent way of revision is to read it out loud. Listen to the rhythm of the sentences. Do they sound clumsy? Too long? Confusing? Are you in love with a certain paragraph because it’s beautifully written, yet the paragraph doesn’t carry the story forward? Cut it. Be tough and follow Stephen King’s advice: Kill your babies! Keep that baby in a file for another novel.

When done, run your manuscript through editing software to check for spelling or grammatical errors. Grammarly, Pro Writing Aid, and Scrivener are popular ones. Find more on the web. Some offer trial periods. Choose the one that suits you best. After completion, you need one or two beta readers. What’s a beta reader? You’ll find the answer here: https://blog.reedsy.com/beta-readers/ Your last step in producing a perfect final draft, which will make a huge difference in the success of your book, is to hire a professional editor. I recommend One Lit Place for Writers, a full service writer’s centre, which offers editing services and much more. The Centre is also an excellent choice if you wish to skip the above steps because it offers support for writers from start to publication. www.onelitplace.com. Happy Holiday Season, dear writer. Our Passion As a mother and educator for the past four decades, I strongly believe it's our collective responsibility as a society to establish a robust educational framework for all individuals, including parents and the community. Our goal should be to instill values such as kindness, self-respect, and impart quality education not only to children but also to parents.

By

Katherine Poureetezadi-Treasure Being one of the co-hosts of asktheteacherabcpodcasts, we are dedicated to promoting inspiration, empowerment, and growth in all educational environments. Our philosophy is rooted in love, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to establishing areas of learning accessible to all humans. I am proud to say that I hold a bachelors degree in history, a masters degree in early childhood development and a masters degree in administration. I am also a gifted reading specialist from kindergarten to grade 8.

Having my daughter, Annalee, as the Co-Host has added a distinct personal touch to our show. As fellow educators, we share many common experiences, and yet there is so much that we learn from each other. Our collaboration has resulted in novel perspectives, which we incorporate into our craft as teachers and parents.

Annalee has a bachelors degree in history and is a passionate and dynamic middle school teacher. It's heartening to know that Annalee will continue to carry forward the traditions of our family, extending them to other families, teachers, classrooms, schools, and beyond. We thoroughly enjoy exploring and expressing ourselves in a unique manner, often bouncing ideas off each other. Our collaboration is particularly rewarding since we belong to different generations, and it's fascinating to learn how each of us thinks and perceives differing aspects of life .

Susan Mckenzie - Colour Therapist

H

ello! I am Susan McKenzie a Colour Therapist, Reflexologist and Grief Specialist living in Burlington, Ontario with a propensity to encourage Deep Self Care for women. I have dabbled with what was considered healing stuff “out there” for most of my adult life. Not surprising, I suppose, being born in the early sixties on the Hippy Ray of Peace and Love. Regardless, I proudly own my Hippiness and I have reached an age where I know I have been blessed with a full life and I embrace the wisdom gained through all I have experienced. I am profoundly aware of the importance of the conscious living, and I love to share my gifts to those who reach out in search of the same Many will know that a Reflexologist is a natural therapist working on reflexes in the hands and feet that correspond to the entire body. A session is a one-hour, little piece of Self Care Heaven. A Grief Specialist is self-explanatory, but I will add that I work mostly with women, and I use Colour Therapy to support clients on their Grief Journey. This leads to the question, “what the heck is a Colour Therapist?” That’s what I thought back in October 2016 when I was introduced to the Psychology of Colour for a second time in my life. This time the magic of Colour seeped in my soul and over the course of the past 7 years I have learned and shared the beauty and grace of Colour Therapy to those who are ready to discover its magic and mystery.

Susan Mckenzie - Colour Therapist

“Colour is the mother tongue of the subconscious mind.” Carl Jung

Carl Jung wrote, “Colour is the mother tongue of the subconscious mind.” That phrase sums up much of what Colour Therapy does. It gives a colourful voice to the thoughts, beliefs and patterns that reside in the subconscious mind. These are the things that steer most people’s day to day life. Colour Therapy has the capacity to clear these thoughts, beliefs, and patterns, moving us into more conscious living where we make more thought filled decisions. Colour mirrors back to us that which our soul is waiting for us to see, acknowledge and release and from there we move from Unconscious Reaction to Conscious Action. Life is calmer. We learn to surrender and flow with life. We feel lighter, loving and forgiving. We live authentically and we live our truth. It really is wonderful. My passion is to see women transform their lives with ease. As women rise to their innate power, what good are we if we’re overwhelmed and worn out? My Signature sessions and Self Care for The Soul packages encompass mind, body and soul care. For people who are not local, Virtual Colour Therapy Sessions are extremely productive including for Grief Support. If you’re curious about Colour, check out “Colour Oil or Essence Messages” on my website. If you’re feeling stuck, choose a coloured bottled and click for the write up. The information you’re seeking is in the write up, your energy will shift and move you towards higher conscious living. Step by step. Its so worth the journey!

Christmas

Christmas is such a wonderful time of year. I am honestly like a silly kid during the holiday season. I am bursting with excitement and I am completely focused on turning our home into a winter wonderland. A magical place for family and friends to gather and celebrate this very special time of year. I am not alone however, my little guy is equally excited and starts rummaging through our Christmas decorations as early as November. He is overwhelmed with excitement that Santa is coming to town. We decided on a pre-lit artificial Christmas tree this year as I was anxious to put it up early in December, and I didn’t really have a choice as a real tree would dry out by early January and would be a fire hazard concern. It is definitely not the same as a real tree but it looked really pretty so I was satisfied. My little guy was just as excited as I was about decorating this tree. We decided that we would go with red, white and silver with touches of gold this year which I love, and to me, are the traditional colours of Christmas. The holiday season, for me, Christmas is about family connections and spending true quality time together, away from work and the business of everyday life, Focusing on each other and sharing life stories.

Dee Women Rock Magazine | 32

The

history of Christmas trees has many roots, ranging from the use of evergreens in ancient Egypt and Rome to the German traditions of candlelit trees that made its way to America in the 1800s. Christmas trees have a history starting from the earliest winter solstice celebrations to Queen Victoria’s decorating habits and the annual lighting of the Rockefeller Center tree in New York City.

A little history on the Christmas Tree

Long before the advent of Christianity, plants and trees that remained green all year had a special meaning for people in the winter. Just as people today decorate their homes during the festive season with pine, spruce, and fir trees, many ancient people hung evergreen boughs over their doors and windows. In many countries it was believed that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness. www.history.com

A Family Tradition

Happiness is Decorating the Christmas Tree

We literally have about 6 full boxes of Special Christmas tree decorations so we sifted through each box and picked out all of our Xmas tree colours to create our colour theme. The designer always comes out in everything I do when it comes to decorating so I immediately mentioned to my little guy that everything looks better when grouped in odd numbers, so we decided to group our decorations in groups of 3. Our decorating venture was underway and our creative juices were flowing. My little man definitely has his Mama’s flare and passion for decorating and that suits me just fine. You could not wipe the smile off of my face as I watched him immerse himself in this very festive and heartwarming family tradition. It was a bonding moment indeed. Dee xo

ur Christmas Tree decorations are a collection of treasures that have been lovingly selected over the past 29 years. My husband and I have been married for 27 years and we started collecting our ornaments during our very first Christmas together. Now with having 2 children we have an array of or unique finds for our tree. We have kept each and every one that the kids made in school and every ornament that they picked out while shopping. Our Christmas tree is a combination of all of us. Our Christmas tree tells a story. It is a story about a family who are deeply connected to one another. A family that has a very special place in each others hearts. A family that is filled with love, mutual respect and admiration. Dee xo

eck the Halls for the Christmas Holidays

Decorating for Christmas has always been a busy time of year for me. I don’t only decorate my own home but I decorate for many of my clients as well. Some find it very intimidating and a little overwhelming to turn their home into a Christmas wonderland, so I am always there to help. For me it’s a delightful undertaking. The holiday season makes me feel giddy ... childlike. For me, each and every year as a Mom and as an Interior Designer the thought that I get to decorate with so many colours, sparkling ornaments and festive treasures brings pure joy to my heart. It is literally a dream come true. For me, turning my home into a Winter Wonderland is pure joy. Each year I pick up a few new items to add to my Christmas decor compilation. I usually wait until after Christmas as that’s when I find some wonderful sales on adorable Christmas treasures. I stock up on candles, wreaths, hand towels, unique Christmas bulbs, and cute ornaments, and small stuffed toys for my tree as well. I always keep my eyes open for unique finds, pieces that are perfect for conversations, ones that are whimsical and colourful, and ones that speak to my heart. I always try and add a sweet holiday arrangement every year and of course incorporating the Xmas Pointsettas throughout is key to achieve that true authentic Christmas feel.

Some guidelines you many find helpful when planning your Christmas or Home design project. When I plan out my design projects, and that includes my Christmas decorating projects as well I start out with choosing a colour scheme and a decorating style first. Choosing the degree of formality (style) and colours you (my client) loves is a very important start. As a designer I normally take my colour inspiration from a favourite piece (painting, area rug, clothing) that my client is in love with. That is key to making this project about what THEY love! Your home should be a reflection of who you are and what you love. The following principals in decorating & design are very important to keep in mind when planning your design project. If you plan on choosing silver candlesticks holders and velvet cushions the feel will come across as more formal. If you are using raw wood, twigs and quilted items you will achieve a more informal look. Consistency, repetition, focal points, colour harmony, symmetry, and coordinating patterns when choosing your accessories are also very important when planning out your design project. You don’t want your space to feel cluttered and overwhelming for you or for your guests. Accessorize sparingly and try not to overdo it whether you are decorating for the holidays or any other time throughout the year. Every space/room should have a focal point, a wow factor that the eye is drawn to. During the Christmas season it is usually a fireplace if one is present in the space. Everything else should compliment this feature. Happy Decorating Everyone! Dee xo

Louise Boucher

fter several years without connection, it is time. Time to reconnect, to come together as a community, to become whole, to start or continue your wellness journey. As the owner of a holistic wellness shop, Heather is frequently asked how to find resources. In the past, she would direct people to the directory of Tone magazine. It was the source for holistic practitioners and those searching for solutions to come together in a meaningful way. When it disbanded, people were at a loss to discover ways to find the resources they needed, whether it was a holistic treatment, sound therapy instruments, a yoga class, or wellness products. Unfortunately, COVID set us back as a connected society, so Heather and Louise, fueled by their passion to help individuals discover and find the right wellness solution for them, partnered up to create a new wellness resource community hub. How is holistic wellness different from conventional wellness? Holistic wellness refers to the overall well-being of an individual including their physical, mental, emotional, environmental, financial, social, occupational, and spiritual health. It involves taking a comprehensive approach to health that considers all aspects of a person’s life, rather than simply addressing isolated symptoms or conditions. The holistic approach to wellness emphasizes the interconnectedness of all aspects of a person’ s life and how they contribute to overall health and well-being. This approach recognizes that physical health is only one aspect of a person’s overall well-being and that the other dimensions described below are just as important. Some key components of holistic wellness include a balanced and nutritious diet, regular exercise, stress management techniques, adequate sleep, healthy relationships, mindfulness and meditation practices, and engagement in meaningful activities.

www.holistipedia.ca/directory

www.holistipedia.ca/book-corner By taking a holistic approach to wellness, individuals can enhance their overall quality of life, prevent disease, and promote longevity. It is important to remember that everyone’s path to holistic wellness is unique, and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. This is where Holistipedia comes in by providing an online resource. It is a venue for information as the resource hub for the community for events, podcasts, articles, references and your source for connection to achieve ultimate health on your wellness journey. It includes a robust list of resources and a directory to guide one’s wellness journey. In summary, Holistipedia is your source for everything wellness which is based on the following 8 dimensions of wellness: 1. Physical: nourishing a healthy body through exercise, nutrition, sleep. 2. Mental: feeling balanced, connected to others and ready to meet life’s challenges. 3. Emotional: being aware of, accepting and expressing our feelings, and understanding the feelings of others. 4. Social: connecting and engaging with others and our communities in meaningful ways. 5. Spiritual: searching for meaning and higher purpose in human existence. 6. Environmental: fostering positive interrelationships between planetary health and human actions, choices and wellbeing. 7. Financial: learning how to successfully manage financial expenses. 8. Occupational: preparing for work in which we gain personal satisfaction and find enrichment in our life. Women Rock Magazine | 36

The ways in which living a holistic lifestyle has changed my life are almost too numerous to count. It has changed my perspective and empowered me to live my best life by altering my diet and trying techniques like intermittent fasting and eating a Ketogenic diet. It has allowed me to try osteopathy and massage therapy for my foot problems. It has given me the gifts of journaling, introspection, and other aspects of selfcare. - Heather Following holistic wellness has had numerous positive impacts in my life. It has tremendously helped in my wellness journey which I like to call it a work in progress and that it is never ending. It has improved my physical health, enhanced my mental clarity, emotional balance, spiritual connection and most importantly my qualify of life. It has increased my energy levels and formed better relationships as well as made me realize the importance of preventative healthcare. - Louise Q2: What areas of your life do you struggle the most with? Work/life balance and keeping a positive mindset have been challenges for me. I started my store while working for the federal government and raising three kids. When I released the concept of working more is better, I found great relief, but I still find it hard to just “be”; instead of “do”;. In that regard, keeping my monkey mind from rhyming off endless “to do” lists remains a challenge. We are all a work in progress. – Heather The tendency to become a workaholic brings me stress and my physical health suffers. I’ve learned through my wellness journey to stop saying yes and to take time for me – for self-care. It’s challenging but I try to bring the awareness of my stress re-routing it to put my selfcare first. I constantly make an effort to practice regular exercise and a balanced diet, but I say to myself that I don’t have to be perfect. Improvement is a continuous journey, and I realized that I’m not expected to have everything figured out or perfected at any given moment. To me, being a “work in progress”; is a positive and forward-looking concept, emphasizing the potential for growth, learning, and development throughout my life. It encourages self-reflection, adaptability, and a mindset of continual improvement. Louise We would love to hear your questions on wellness so we can answer and share them in the forthcoming issues! Please send them to info@holistipedia.ca. As an incentive, we will add your name for a surprise draw of something that can help you in your wellness journey! Women Rock Magazine | 37

Count Your Blessings Everyday... Not just at the holidays! by Sue Pitchforth

Most of us tune into the blessings of our lives during the holidays and at special celebrations. And that is ok. But what if we tuned in to our blessings each day, instead of a few times a year?Just imagine how our lives would change! We all have so much to be thankful for, even though, at times, we may not think so. Blessings appear in many ways. They come in the form of special people in our lives, our pets, our health, our home, nature around us, our personal and professional lives, goals and everything in between. Let’s make a commitment to put blessings in the forefront of our lives. Make a conscious choice to honour and acknowledge all that we are so grateful for. I know you are thinking, “my life is busy, I have things to do. Do I really have time to think about blessings?” Yes you do! It doesn’t have to take a lot of time but the rewards are great.

Some ideas I’d like you to consider and how you could bring blessings into your own life are: Journaling in a special notebook - each day I write down 3 things that I am grateful for and blessed with. Pick some flowers from your garden and bring them inside - or in the winter buy some flowers. Flowers are such a blessing in our lives. Send a card in the mail or email someone and let them know you are thinking about them and that they are a blessing to you. Visit your favourite spot in nature and just take it in. Give someone a big hug and tell them how much they mean to you. These are just a few ways that you can acknowledge and count your blessings. I know that you will have many other ways that are right for you. Isn’t Christmas the best time to begin to count your blessings? Do it and see how your life will change. Instantly. You will change your heart, mind and soul. It is the best gift that you can give yourself and others. Be present. Be aware. Be blessed. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from my home to yours, Sue. Create your own festive Ice & Greenery Centrepiece without the ice! These arrangements look great for about a week or so - just keep adding fresh water! Your family & friends won't believe that you created them and they were so easy to put together! All you need is: glass vase. water. clear cellophane. fresh cranberries. greenery Crinkle the cellophane and place it in the vase, add cranberries & greenery then water.

Need some new festive inspiration? Tired of the same old look? Why not think of a Winter Wonderland? One of my clients wanted something a little non traditional for her Christmas living room decor so we looked through all her boxes and found the beginnings of a beautiful new theme that she and her family just love! She had everything in her home to create this pretty vignette.

hat do the colors of the Transgender Pride Flag mean?

transgender The Transgender Pride Flag has day of remembrance five stripes with alternating colors. A single white stripe is surrounded on the top and bottom by two light blue and light pink stripes.

The blue and pink colors are the traditional colors for boys and girls, while the white stripe represents transitioning, intersex or gender-neutral identities. The flag’s symmetry is important as well – according to flag creator Monica Helms, “the pattern is such that no matter which way you fly it, it is always correct, signifying us finding correctness in our lives.”

The History of Hot Chocolate

e all know hot chocolate as the warm, rich drink we enjoy on a cold night by the fire, or after engaging in winter activities such as ice skating and skiing. But have you ever thought about this delicious beverage’s origins? Hot chocolate’s history goes quite a way back, and the drink has changed over the years, evolving from cold and spicy to warm and sweet.

It all started in Mexico

njoying a delectable hot chocolate at Christmas time is one of those quintessential must haves that just makes you feel all warm and cozy inside. It warms your spirit as much as it does your tummy. Everything feels more festive while sipping on a mug of that chocolaty, warm beverage.

s early as 500 BC, the Mayans were drinking chocolate made from ground-up cocoa seeds mixed with water, cornmeal, and chili peppers (as well as other ingredients)—a much different version from the hot chocolate we know today. They would mix the drink by pouring it back and forth from a cup to a pot until a thick foam developed. Then they would enjoy the beverage cold. Although the chocolate drink was available to all classes of people, the wealthy would drink it from large vessels with spouts, which later would be buried along with them.

Then made it’s way to Europe n the early 1500s, the explorer Cortez brought cocoa beans and the chocolate drink-making tools to Europe. Although the drink still remained cold and bitter-tasting, it gained popularity and was adopted by the court of King Charles V as well as the Spanish upper class. After its introduction in Spain, the drink began to be served hot, sweetened, and without the chili peppers. The Spanish were very protective of their wonderful new beverage, and it was over a hundred years before news of it began to spread across Europe.

Hot Chocolate Today p until the 19th century, hot chocolate was used as a treatment for stomach and liver diseases as well as a special drink. Today, however, we simply treat this warm concoction as a beverage to sip and savor. In America, hot chocolate is somewhat thin and often made by combining hot water with packets of powder, although you can find more authentic and gourmet varieties in restaurants and cafes. Other countries have their own versions—Spain’s thick chocolate a la taza, spiced chocolate para mesa from Latin America, and Italy’s cioccolata calda, which is very thick.

ot chocolate has become so popular in the United States that it is available in coffee vending machines. The powder is sold in packets and canisters, and coffee houses often have rich, somewhat thicker varieties on their menus.

The Evolution of Chocolate

Here are the top 10 health perks of hot chocolate: 1. Anti-depressant 2. Triggers brain activity 3. Anti-cancer agent 4. Help lose Weight 5. Dental care 6. Skin care 7. Sexual benefits 8. Prevents type-2 diabetes 9. Restrain heart diseases 10. Regulate blood circulation

Hot cocoa is a powerful elixir – one which boosts mood and vitality and combats stress, anxiety, and pain.

t wasn’t until the middle of the 18th century that chocolate began to evolve past its drinkable form. First, cocoa powder was invented in Holland, where the Dutch controlled nearly the entire cocoa bean trade. Since the cocoa powder blends much easier with milk or water, it allowed for more creations to come. Next came chocolate as a candy by mixing cocoa butter with sugar and in 1876, milk chocolate was developed. From then on, chocolate has become more popular as a solid treat rather than as the drink it started from.

Kimberley Lee

Transformational Empowerment Life Coach

Kim Lee Having survived addiction as an adult, I found myself as a single mother raising a child on my own. With only a high school education I worked very hard but struggled to make ends meet, I had low self-esteem due to abuse, and was tangled up in various co-dependent, abusive relationships with men. Eventually the stress evolved into full blow general and social anxiety disorder, where medications did not make me feel better, and to what I felt was a bandage rather than a solution. It was then, some 25 years ago, where I went back to school and became a Social Service Worker and started exploring holistic methods of self-discovery and recovery from that debilitating, dark, out of control state of mind. With education I have created my own toolbox of self-care methods to manage and flourish, such as mindfulness, cognitive therapy, reiki, essential oils, various styles of meditation, Qigong, the importance of using your creative juices, and many more resources and skills that I’m very passionate about sharing. Coaching allows me to educate, gently support, and mentor my clients through their own journey to feeling confident, independent, and into a renewed, controlled self. My knowledge has confidently transformed me from the state of sadness, fear, and anxiety to one of joy, happiness, fulfillment and completely in charge. My clients feel an awakening, a new sense of confidence, a transformation that is truly life changing! As owner of The Papillon Studio I am always using my creative juices to discover new interests and create beautiful items such as my artesian zafu meditation pillows, refurbishing old furniture and chairs. Travel Destinations The Amalfi Coast - Italy Minori Amalfi Positano

by dee tobin sinha

Dee overlooking the majestic Tyrrhenian Sea from a street high above Positano. This town is a mixture of homes on cliffs, and bustling shopping and restaurants, the views are breathtaking, this is definitely one of the treasures along the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast - This was a bucket list dream of mine for some time now. In October 2023, along with my Husband and Son, I got the chance to fulfill this dream and make it come true. And it did not disappoint! We landed in Naples, tired after an early morning flight from Malaga Spain via Barcelona, but excited. Finally, we were in Italy! And oh what luck! We started our journey in Naples, home of the Pizza Margherita, argued to be the best Pizza in the world. So of course, our first stop was a pizzeria where we put this to the test...And WOW!!! With two Pizza’s in hand, we began our drive towards Amalfi. Leaving Naples, we passed the majestic Mount Vesuvius, a still active Volcano that had destroyed the City of Pompeii in 79 A.D. It sat quitetly as we passed, but the awe it inspired cannot be denied. Women Rock Magazine | 52

Minori

What eventually started as a smooth sunny drive on a world class highway, soon gave way to a steep curving path through stunning hills nestled high in the sky. We passed through some lovely little towns such as Corbara and Campinola, as as we ascended higher and higher. The roads narrowed, and the turns were sharp. But, despite all that, this was an amazing drive as we weaved closer and closer to our goal. Finally, we descended from the hills, and as if by magic, the road ended with a breathtaking view of the Mediterrenean right in front of us. We took a right in Maiori, and headed on our Journey along the Amalfi Coast.

A view from Via Esterna Chiunzi with Mt Vesuvius in the background

Our Condo was in Minori. It was a beautiful little seaside villa atop a steep cliff right on - and I mean RIGHT ON - the sea. The day we arrived, the weather was rough, and the waves were crashing 30 feet below our balcony. It was extraordinary. If you want to experience the Mediterrenean, you need to breath the vapours of the salt air and hear the waves through the night. And that is exactly what we got. The condo itself was a gem. Our hosts had some coffee and biscotti laid out for us, perfect after our winding drive. It boasted two bedrooms, living room, kitchen, and a airy balcony to take in the blue skies and sea. We had begun our transportation to another time and place it seemed! Minori by Night

Our quaint little condo right on the edge of the Mediterrenean Sea! Il Nido Del Gabbiano is a gem. The hosts are charming and very helpful. We appreciated their hospitality and friendliness! Courtesy: Google Maps

The busy and strada statale 163 Amalfitana, also known as Amalfi Drive. Fun and beautiful - but nerve wracking LOL!

The Amalfi Coast - Italy Minori

Positano

Amalfi You may have heard stories of the driving along the Amalfi Coast. What a view, but...don’t take your eyes off the road! There are twists and turns a plenty along this trail, and compound that with dense traffic, busses, motorcycles, and yes, even pedestrians! It is a challenge to say the least, but a skilled driver can handle it (my husband Mick made me put that statement in LOL).

Hercules, the Greek warrior god, loved a nymph named Amalfi who, alas, died young. Grieving the passing of his beloved and seeking the most beautiful place on earth in which to bury her, he chose the present day Amalfi, naming the spot after her. Source: https://www.girosole.com/italy-travel-info/special-places/amalfi-history

Such is the Greek myth of how Amalfi was named. Certainly, the beauty of Amalfi does lend itself to this legend, as it can be argued that this coastline IS the most beautiful place on Earth. We drove in on a sunny morning and were greeted by a bustling town full of shops, restaurants, a stunning shoreline and a backdrop of historic buildings perched precariously on sheer hillsides. I was astounded by the architecture, not only for it’s beauty, but trying to fathom how they were built inot the sheer cliffs that they adorned.

From the waterfront, a small alley way leads into the town center. It is a magical square that is full of shops and restaurants, and it is graced by the Duomo di Amalfi, or the Cathedral of Amalfi - a stunning church in the heart of the town. The interior is somber testament to Old World Roman architecture and detail. It is peaceful and holy, we spent some time just reflecting on the history and religion which is so prominent in this part of theh World.

Positano

Positano Lemons! Lemon sorbet, lemon tarts, lemoncilla ... It’s not hard to tell the love lemons here! Every other shop it seems in Positano, if not selling some type of food or drink based on lemons, they are selling cookware, clothes, accessories, all based on lemons. Tree’s all around are bursting with, you guessed it... So what is the enchantement with this delighfully sour fruit? Simply put, the Amalfi Coast is known to have the best lemons in the World. The temperate, climate, along with the fertile soil, lends itself to groves of lemon terraces all around. The ice cream is fresh, sweet, and there is no doubt of the freshness of the ingredients! The architecture in Positano is something to behold. The city itself is nestled into steep slopes that cascade into the ocean. It was awe inspiring to see how complex and ingenious the builders of this town were to so adeptly intertwine buildings and roads into the hills while maintaining the beauty and aesthetics that Positano is so known for. There are so many hidden alleys and apartments, that it will take days to properly explore this magical city.

THe Amalfi Coast is a wonder...Our family loved the excitement of the drive, the beauty of the ocean, and the charm of the multitude of quaint Italian towns. The locals were friendly and charming, the food was delicious, the weather was warm...And the Cappucino....well :-)

Res Severa Verum Gaudium Believe me, having fun is a serious business

My

by Ralitsa Tcholakova

name is Ralitsa Tcholakova. I am a violin and viola performer and teacher. I just performed at Carnegie Hall as a soloist of the New York Chamber Players Orchestra. A friend of mine wrote to me to congratulate me and paraphrased Frank Sinatra. “If you can make it there, You can make it anywhere, It's up to you New York, New York!!!” So I made it in New York. This is my second performance at Carnegie Hall. The first one was last year. I played viola and premiered a piece composed for me by the Canadian Composer Evelyn Stroobach. For both performances, I was awarded a medal. It is very nice to be recognized as an outstanding musician internationally, especially in the USA and at one of the most important if not The Most important venue in the world. Some friends and musicians are telling me that this is like a dream come true. The fact of the matter is that I didn’t dream that. My character is different I am somewhat more realistic. I set goals and do my best to achieve them. As an immigrant in Canada, I have to work very hard. Usually, women have to be 200% better than men to be successful and appreciated, in my case I have to be 300% better than anybody else to gain success and recognition. I came to Canada on a scholarship at the Banff Centre for the Arts. I was there for six months and stayed in Canada because I got a job as a concertmaster at the summer program called 20th Century Opera and Song there. In 2000 I won a concerto competition and performed as a soloist with the National Academy Orchestra under the baton of Boris Brott. In early 2001 I moved to Ottawa, I played at a lot of Chamber music concert series in town and in 2004 decided that I would like to try to have a career as a soloist. At that time I was very lucky and did perform internationally supported by several Arts institutions and organizations.

My

by Ralitsa Tcholakova

first scholarship towards an international trip came from the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and in the following years between 2004-2011, I received numerous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, the Canadian Studies Centre and PromArt2000. Unlucky for me in 2012 I had a severe shoulder injury that affected the development of my international music career but by being forced to perform moistly locally I did initiate two projects, one of them called “Spirit of Change” on Parliament Hill. This concert is dedicated to the democratic changes that occurred in Central and Eastern Europe after the fall of the Iron Curtain. The other project “Women of Note” was promoting the music of European women composers. Both projects were supported by numerous European embassies. In 2019 miraculously my shoulder was cured and I went on a concert tour in Chile, that was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. I performed with two orchestras and had three more concerts with a pianist with the project Women of Note. An interesting fact is that I learned and performed the first violin concerto composed in Canada (in 1942) by Barbara Pentland. I have a grant from the City of Ottawa to record a new CD. I will be recording this concerto with Nurhan Arman and Sinfonia Toronto early next year. The last concert Spirit of Change that I organized in the Canadian Parliament was in February this year and it had a twist in the political connotation. It was tied to the anniversary of the military assault of Russia on Ukraine as well. I believe I am the only individual musician in Ottawa, maybe even in Canada who performed an annual recital on Parliament Hills thus far. There are two Canadian composers who would like to write pieces for me and both are from Ottawa. Kevork Andonian was born here, he is currently based in Los Angeles, CA. The project we want to work on and develop together is Piazzolla’s Tango Etudes, he would like to write an orchestra part for them. This is super exciting because I love Argentina and tango music. Thanks to the support of the Canadian organization between 2004-2010 I have been there eight times, performing and giving master classes at different provinces, cities and universities. Andrew Ager, a very prominent Ottawa composer would like to write a violin concerto for me. As he said; “As a surprise to everyone and a change I will fill it up with beautiful melodies”. I am super excited about both projects and look forward to performing them locally, nationally and internationally. One of the musicians with whom I collaborated for my CD “Aboriginal Inspirations” - Ron Korb won two Grammy’s with two different CDs as instrumentalist this year. My thinking is if he can win I will do my best to do that too. Other than being a musician as someone born in Bulgaria I was one of the main instruments for the creation of the Canada-Bulgarian Interparliamentary Friendship Group in the Canadian Parliament in 2014. Senator Martin did help in the establishment of the friendship group and since then she has been always the main driving force for sustaining it. In 2015 I was invested in the Order of St.Lazarus and a board member of the local commandery since then. I am very proud of the wonderful work the OSLJ is doing by supporting different palliative care institutions and units in Ottawa and the vicinity. For example, we are donating yearly to the palliative care unit at the Ottawa mission since its existence. I firmly believe people create their own destinies and I sincerely hope to always be an inspiration, especially to all my students. click to go to link

Giving During the Holiday Season. Why Do People Give? People give when they know that their donations are going to make a difference in the lives of others. People give to support causes they find important. This includes environmental preservation, health research, and social equality. Some people give to support the fight against a particularly deadly disease. It may be cancer, HIV, or tuberculosis etc. Some people give because it makes them feel good, happy, and satisfied.

As you can see, there are many reasons why people might donate their time, money, or possessions. No matter the reason, it’s important to remember that the act of giving helps both the giver and the receiver. Now that we know what motivates us to give, let's look into the actual benefits of generosity.

7 Benefits of Generosity for the Giver 1. It activates the reward center in your brain. 2. It improves life satisfaction. At various points during the past year, many of us have lost our jobs and 3. It makes you happy. financial security. We’ve lost social interactions and the little freedoms we once took for granted. We’ve lost what made our days “normal.” Most 4. One answer appears to be “giving.” The act of giving can help those in need even as it improves the giver’s own well-being. “In giving to others, you might help them, but you might also help yourself.”

here is an enormous sense of satisfaction when seeing the expression on the face of someone you’ve given a gift to. A way to express feelings, giving reinforces appreciation and acknowledgement of each other. The feelings expressed mainly depend on the relationship between giver and recipient.

The holiday season is also about giving back— volunteer your time around your community, gather donations for those in need, or perform random acts of kindness. If you’re celebrating with family, maybe volunteer your time in helping your loved ones get the evening ready for the gathering. Focus on positivity.

Most people like receiving things because it makes them feel connected, it makes them feel like a part of something bigger than themselves, it makes them feel loved. Would you have guessed that people like giving for the very same reasons? Research has shown that giving usually makes people feel some kind of happiness, even if that giving requires a small sacrifice. holidappy.com psychologicalscience.org

When I share at Narcotics or Alcoholic Anonymous meetings, I always begin with allowing the listeners to know that I was raised in a middle income family, both parents, a younger brother from the state of California. Addiction can happen to anyone, not just abusive or broken homes. Growing up was pretty much a normal childhood, all the way throughout high school which brought me through some typical party days.

While in my twenties, I worked two jobs which kept me extremely busy. Approaching my thirties, I met a gentleman, within six months I was moved in, married and pregnant, within two years, my second child was born. For almost ten years, I was a devoted wife, mother and carried a full-time job. Life was normal and watching my girls grow was fulfilling and thought that this is what I truly needed, but I was wrong. In early 2004 is when my life took a drastic change.

I was 36 years old, decided to leave our marriage, maybe thinking I wanted more and even leaving my girls behind. Soon after I met this man, things were wonderful for the first month, but very short lived. He was a heavy drinker, and the abuse began right away. Began subtle; I was being told about what to wear, how much makeup to use and even how to wear my hair. Before long, he had taken my cellphone, began isolating me from friends and family. The day finally came where the first hit on my arm (a deep bruise formed) simply because I smiled at someone. Shortly after, I was completely under his control. All contact with the outside world was lost. He supplied me with pills, which at first, I refused to where he proceeded to burn my legs with cigarettes (the scars remain) but I did find that short-lived peace from everything he was giving me because the pills actually numbed the pain. Raped daily, beatings continued, he made sure every mark, every bruise could be covered with long sleeves and a scarf around my neck and all the while I was hoping someone would notice something just wasn't right and that help would come but help never came.

The fall of 2004, the longest eight months or so of my torture came full circle as the day was especially hot, I was sitting under a tree while he got drunker, suddenly out of nowhere he snapped. He charged at me, punched me in the face with such force, he broke my jaw. With one swoop with his hand, the chair tipped, his enormous hand gripped my neck where for a moment I blacked out to then opening my eyes as he dragged me from my hair back into the house. The blood flowing down my face where he proceeded hitting the side of my head with a beer can. I fought as much as I could to where we were now standing side by side, before realizing he was holding a knife up against my throat, he said to me "We're both going to die tonight." As I looked through my blood-soaked hair, standing in the doorway was a police officer, aimed with a gun, more officers arrived and that's when I gained some strength to push him away from me and the gunfire began. He survived four gunshots to the leg and one in his torso.

Everything happened so fast; he was subsequently arrested, and this quiet neighborhood turned into a war zone. A trial took place, I was strong enough to face my abuser where he basically got a six-month jail sentence but to be able to thank the police officer for saving my life is something to this day I carry with me. Being released from the hospital, I found myself homeless, sleeping on park benches and some nights I tried to stay safe by walking throughout the night. During the days, I found food from soup kitchens and churches, and keeping myself clean as possible at gas station bathrooms. After weeks of doing this, I knew I had no choice but to reach out to my parents who chose not to get involved as their last words to me were, "Sorry, we don't help junkies."

I then began to look for shelters. The only one available was in a drug infested area but I needed help. While staying in the shelter I began to slowly heal, even bought my first Bible where I spent my days reading....a person who never believed in God, never truly believed in anything spiritual was reading the Bible. Before long, a man came into my life that would change the fate of my life in a completely different direction. Choosing this man over the safety of the shelter was definitely not a smart move. We moved into a renovated hotel where I simply called it "a box", it had a bed, a small sink with a tiny mirror, one shelf and down the hall is where the common bathrooms were. Everything progressed smoothly at first and quickly turned into a turning point of just how fast my life would spiral out of control. I was quickly introduced to cocaine (crack) and within a matter of seconds I wanted more. What began as using this drug a few times a week to an everyday occurrence. During this time, my ex-husband wanted me to finally have a relationship with our girls but in all honesty, I wanted no part of that as basically they would get in the way of my using. The insanity of it all, trying to manage a somewhat normal life was getting further and further out of reach. My work pay wasn't enough to support my habit, as I began getting high before and during my lunch breaks. Soon after I was robbing people, using people and even began dealing drugs, basically finding any means possible to get more and stay high. When I found out I was pregnant, the thought actually made me sick. At first, I made the doctor visits and found out I was having a boy but that didn't stop me from doing what I wanted, my own thing. Actually, I tried different methods of trying to terminate the pregnancy by any means possible; Giving people drugs (for payment) to punch me in the stomach and when that didn't work, the use of a chair came into play but nothing seemed to work.

Laura De Carlo As the months continued, nothing stopped me. I used to live and lived to use, becoming detached from my pregnancy and no one seemed to even care. The day finally arrived, I was literally powerless over what my life had become. Going into labor alone was still not stopping me as I continued to use right up until the minute I went to the hospital. Arriving at the hospital, my son's head was already visible and within about five minutes, my son Gabriel was born...6 pounds , 8 inches. The following day, I was greeted with a police officer and a lady from Child Protective Services, informing me that my son was born positive for drugs in his system and he would be placed in foster care. I actually was given a choice to be arrested for child endangerment or go to treatment. I watched complete strangers (from the nursery glass) take my son away. I was never able to even hold my new born son, never able to feed him....my heart just broke. I felt such despair, hopelessness and basically, I wanted to die. I then chose treatment; I was choosing to fight for my son and knew I needed help. Arriving at the treatment center, which was an inpatient 6 month facility was a very humbling experience. The staff searched every inch of me, taking all my belongings and being surrounded by women who had nothing to lose and basically trying to adjust to this new life. The week that followed was incredibly difficult. Waking up at 5 am, taking daily drug tests even before brushing our teeth, our breakfast arrived, our chores, some fights occurred, our daily meetings with our counselors and this is where I was first introduced to our AA and NA meetings. I remained quiet, remained unwilling to be open minded and yes, I was very hostile and very angry. Being in treatment for only a few weeks, facing an upcoming court date....my soul completely broken, I remember falling to my knees, uncontrollably crying to where i began praying; Praying for help, just knowing I can't do this alone anymore. I basically surrendered to do what He wished. When court finally arrived my entire mood shifted to an actual peaceful state. I felt confident with myself and was fighting to get my life back.

That was the turning point to where I began to open up, and even willing to share my story. Prayer became a way of life for me. Within a few months I was allowed visitations with my son. Gabriel stayed with me at the center, my hope was restored. The months that followed were challenging though as I still had to participate with all the house rules, the groups, the meetings and all while taking care of my new born son, but I grew strength in my Higher Power, my God who provided me with everything I needed. He was leading my path.

For the next year or so, this was my home. Gabriel was thriving and I was getting healthy and learning more and more about the disease of addiction. We were both eventually blessed with an apartment which then led to part time employment, all the while giving me enough time to continue with my NA meetings. As Gabriel grew, I begin working full time, being ever so present in his life and putting God first in everything I did. I continued with my meetings and I was also working with a sponsor. While working with the Twelve Steps as suggested within tee program, I was dealing with all the shame and guilt over what I had done to Gabriel, others and myself. What exactly does rock bottom truly mean? My true rock bottom was dealing with the loss, the emptiness even the suicidal tendencies and unfortunately some never return from their rock bottom.

Six months had arrived and I had another court date to overcome but I wasn't alone. Within minutes, I was granted full custody of Gabriel and of December 7, 2007 I completed my treatment center and quickly moved into a transitional home with three other women and their children. Staying in a transitional home was actually a blessing. For the first time in so many years, I felt safe. The Onsight staff was amazing and this was where I got very deeply involved with the connections of NA.

Throughout the years, being both mom and dad has been a blessing and I wouldn't change a thing. We always said it was "Us against the World", my saving Grace. God’s love and mercy never wavered, It kept me alive, always guiding me, which gave me the courage and faith to carry on. In my early fifties I was blessed by a spiritual meeting, a friendship began which was all we could do, there was distance between us but after video messaging for months, I chose to cross International waters to Ontario Canada, beginning early in 2020. It was as though we knew each other for years. Unfortunately, when I arrived back to California that's when Covid happened, everything closed including borders. That was a painful two years, but through video calls, we actually learned a lot about each other and for that I believe was all part of God's plan. On August 5th, 2023, I married my best friend. Our wedding was in Peterborough Ontario among family and friends, a fairy-tale type of day. I recently packed up my life in California to come back to Ontario where I always considered to be home. Definitely allowing God to continue to direct our spiritual journey together, One Day At a Time. Looking back I never knew or understood what addiction truly was. I always thought it was mind over matter, something easy to overcome until it grabbed me, took a hold over me and quickly destroyed everything in my life. Addiction is a disease that is not easy to overcome. I was surrounded by death early on and do believe things happen for a reason. I was brought to my faith; it's the disease of Isolation but allows us to realize that God is always with us, to help us to renew our relationship with God, can help us heal from past hurts and find the strength to begin the recovery journey. As of November 23rd, 2023 I celebrated, along with my incredible supportive husband, 17 years clean and sober. Doing it through God's goodness and through the traditions of NA & AA meetings, staying connected and being of service to other's keeps me sober today.

A Coast to Follow Jane Kelsey “Hi I’m Jane. I’m an Engineer. I work with the Canadian Coast Guard.” Regardless of which position I held with the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), or with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), this was my response when someone asked what I did for work. The breadth of the job was hard to explain and I didn’t want to appear immodest. It’s only in the last few months that I have been a little more forthright in what I do. I am the Regional Director, Integrated Technical Services for the Canadian Coast Guard in the Atlantic Region. A bit of a mouthful.

As the technical authority for CCG, I work to ensure that CCG’s assets are capable, available, reliable, and at minimum life cycle cost to deliver CCG and DFO programs in Atlantic Canada. In short, that means I am responsible for the engineering, installation, maintenance, and integrated logistics services to support CCG’s varied assets. This includes approximately 50 vessels such as large and small icebreakers, buoy tenderers, search and rescue boats, science and research vessels and a multitude of small craft. On the land-based side this includes communications sites such as communication towers, buildings, roads, and radio equipment (~120 sites), navigation systems, such as lighthouses, beacons and buoys (1500 fixed aids, 5000 buoys), surveillance systems, such as radar, and other assets including software applications, shipboard electronics and computer systems, cranes and lifts, and vehicles. My team has approximately 350 employees comprising tradespeople, technicians, technologists, engineers, managers and support staff. Staff are geographically dispersed throughout Atlantic Canada and strategically placed to align with our assets in the delivery of front-line services.

Over the course of time I gradually took positions of successive responsibility, or positions that broadened my management development. These included the Supervisor of Engineering, the Superintendent of Electronics and Informatics, Director of Integrated Technical Services, Special Project Officer for the Regional Director General of DFO, Director of Resource Management and Aboriginal Fisheries (DFO), and now the Regional Director Integrated Technical Services CCG for the Atlantic Region.

I started at the CCG as a Systems Engineer shortly after graduating from Memorial University of Newfoundland with an Electrical Engineering degree. I have often thought that this was the best job in the world. We were integrating new and improved electronic and informatic systems onboard CCG ships and on land-based systems. We were working with new technology - doing the project planning and management. It was fast paced. We had the opportunity to see the results and improvements of our work and how that translated into improved, reliable service to Canadians.

What I love about my job is that what I do matters! While technical services might be in the background of CCG and DFO program delivery, the work we do provides services to Canadians and improves safety for mariners. We support CCG services such as Search and Rescue, Aids to Navigation, Marine Communications and Traffic Services, Marine Environmental and Hazardous Response, Icebreaking, and DFO Science and Conservation and Protection programs.

Jane and Helo Crew

I have had the opportunity to work with many amazing people. I am very lucky to work with a team of very talented, dedicated and hardworking people. For anyone who doesn’t know me, I have been involved in sports all of my life, both individual and team. I have always used the lessons that I learned in team sports as part of my management style at work. I view my work group as a team. We work collectively together, towards common goals. As with any team, when times are tough, you need to pull together. When things are going well, you need to celebrate successes. Women Rock Magazine | 64

A Coast to Follow Beyond the day to day, I have had some amazing life experiences that I might never have experienced in other careers. I have been involved with international discussions with the United States Coast Guard and France. I have travelled across Canada and extensively in Atlantic Canada. I have travelled in a helicopter throughout Atlantic Canada. The most memorable helicopter trips include light-station visits on the south coast of NL and flying over the Mealy Mountains in Labrador in the Fall. I had the opportunity to study French as a second language and am bilingual. I have a small boat operators certificate. I am a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal. When I started with the Canadian Coast Guard in 1991 I was the only woman in a technical position in the region. To be honest, I probably hoped that no one noticed that I was a woman. Considering my interests and background, I could reasonably camouflage in a male-dominated work environment. I grew up in a large family with four brothers and two sisters in a farm-like environment. I played sports all my life, and studied Engineering. I have been lucky throughout my career to have worked with a relatively progressive organization and have experienced limited negativity as a woman working in a non-traditional role. In reflection for this article, I was thinking that I hope society gets to a point where we can stop using terms such as “a woman in a non-traditional role.” We have made great strides towards equity, even during the course of my short 32 year career. In my work team today we have female civil engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, naval architecture engineers, marine engineers, technologists, small boat repair technicians, electricians, technical data officers, supervisors, middle managers, as well as supported by an amazing team of business and administrative assistants.

Jane Kelsey

CCG Jubilee Ceremony Today, I am not that shy engineer who started work with a great organization hoping that no one recognized that I was a woman. Today I am proud that I am a woman. I had this amazing career and worked with some amazing people. I am proud that I was a leader in an organization that made a difference in the lives of my team, the Canadian Coast Guard, and the services we provide to Canadians. In a few short months, I am planning to retire. I will still be Jane, the engineer, who worked for Coast Guard. I will leave having formed some great friendships, having pride in what I accomplished, in what my team has accomplished, and with great memories that I will hold dear. Looking forward to the next chapter in life! Jane Kelsey Engineer Mother of two amazing young women, Kelsey and Sarah Daughter of Ron and Mary Sister of Charles, Tish, Robert, Paul, Anne, and John

The True Meaning of the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Christmas Reflections by Dee Sinha At our house, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” is a yearly tradition. We love to put this gem of a show on the big screen and watch not only the captivating Peanuts Gang during the Yuletide season, but to also appreciate the wisdom in the storytelling of Charles M. Schulz.

If you are not familiar with the story, the premise is that Charlie Brown is not happy during the Christmas Season, even though everyone else seems to be. He is fraught with the over commercialism displayed by everyone, from his sister Sally - who asks for cash “tens and twenties” - right down to his dog Snoopy – who is decorating his doghouse for a contest to win cash LOL! Because he is so depressed and has a fear of everything, Lucy suggests to get over his fear, He should become the director of the school Christmas play, which he signs up for, hoping to find the true meaning of Christmas.

There is a part of it where the Peanuts gang gives Charlie Brown the task of picking out a Christmas Tree for the play centerpiece, as Lucy says, “A great big shiny aluminum Christmas tree!”. Charlie Brown sets out with his pal Linus to find the perfect tree…Upon entering the tree lot, Charlie and Linus are surrounded by pink and yellow aluminum Christmas tree’s and every one of them is absolutely perfect, reflecting on the materialism that has become evident in our modern-day Christmas. The True Meaning of the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree As they wade through the myriad of over-the-top tree’s, Charlie Brown spots a tiny, sorry looking little tree standing all by itself, looking lost and alone. Charlie Brown takes to it immediately and says, “this one seems to need a home”. Linus cautions that this tree does not fit the ideal that Lucy had specified for a “Modern Christmas”. Linus is right, and poor Charlie Brown is scolded by all the other kids for being “stupid” and a “blockhead”. Charlie Brown responds in frustration “isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about!?” Book 42, Luke (002:08-14) - The Bible, King James Version As adapted for A Charlie Brown Christmas

To this, Linus replies that he does, and recites as follows: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

So what Linus recites, is quoted directly from the Bible and reflects the true meaning of Christmas. Not of gifts and commercialism and Corporations, but of the Baby Jesus being born in poverty, in a manger.

With this, the kids reflect, and after Linus looks back at the tree, he states, “it’s not such a bad little tree” and secures it with his blanket. The kids then gather around and decorate it and make it sparkle brilliantly as they sing a hymn.

The tree reflects the true meaning of Christmas. It is not for us to judge what is ugly, what is poor, what is not worthy of us. All of us are equal and need to be treated with the respect of our fellow human being….or tree.

Merry Christmas!

REMEMBERING WOMEN IN CANADA’S HISTORY Mona Louse Parsons was born on February 17, 1901in Middleton, Nova Scotia. After completing her studies at the Acadia Ladies’ Seminary in Wolfville NS, she devided her time between Boston, and Nova Scotia as she honed her drama skills and acted in several stage productions. She continued her artistic endeavors by becoming a Chorus Girl in the Ziegfield Follies in New York city in 1929. During her time in NYC, she continued her studies as a nusre, and was introduced to Willem Leonhardt, an established Dutch businessman and millionaire. The two married and she began a life in the Netherlands.

“Women tend to be buried among the pages of history, and usually it is male military and political leaders who are written about.

Mona Parsons MON A P A R S ON S

February 17, 1901 – November 28, 1976

Then the German Invasion came in 1940...

When you find a story about a woman who laid her life on the line doing what she believed was the right thing to do, the just thing to do, which was to resist the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands."

Andria Hill-Lehr

Due to her acquired wealth and high level contacts, Mona had the opportunity to join in the German Resitance: She sheltered downed Allied airmen in her home, "Ingleside", near Laren. At the beginning of the German occupation, Parsons dismissed her servants so that their quarters on the top floor of Ingleside could be used to accommodate Allied airmen. A hiding place, behind the closet in the master bedroom, was available as a temporary emergency shelter for the airmen if her home was searched by the Nazis. Once the pilots left Parsons' home, they were transported to Leiden, where fishing boats took them to rendezvous with British submarines for their return to England. The number of Allied pilots she saved is unknown, but she showed the bravery to accomplish this feat. However, due to her service to the Alliance, she was eventually found guilty of treason to the German Military and put in a concentration camp. The following are from her memoirs, showing her bravery and resilience

The first year I was ill a lot, weighed only about 94 pounds & was green - night sweats, coughing & diarrhoea every day for 3½ months & often vomiting. Tears have run down my cheeks for hunger. When the diarrhoea got better I was given a pint of soup extra - made from turnip & potato peelings - every day for 6 months & my vitamin tablets which I had been allowed to keep with me. There were no medicines to be had. We slept four in a tiny cell built for one. In all the years of imprisonment I slept always on a straw sack on the floor. I was in solitary once for two weeks, for writing a letter in English. Fortunately no one could read English, otherwise another prisoner might have been involved. I got out of it by saying it was only a little story I was writing to amuse myself. We were not allowed to have pencil or paper. Practically 4 years of isolation. During my first contact with people - after throwing off my half-witted act - I felt only half conscious of all that went on about me. My body was shaky my brain seemed quite numb - thoroughly incapable of absorbing what was said to me. My head spun. It just seemed too much, all of a sudden. We'd had literally no brain stimulation all these years - we were forbidden to talk during our 12 hour working day - at night too tired to do anything but crawl into bed. Even when we weren't too tired to talk - we'd have little to talk about. We heard no news scarcely. We were not even allowed to have books.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mona_Louise_Parsons#cite_note -autogenerated1-1

On March 24, 1945, as Allied forces bombed the prison camp, Parsons escaped with young Dutch Baroness Wendelien van Boetzelaer.[2] Walking in frigid temperatures in short-sleeved prison garb, their shoes soon gave out. Although as a young woman Parsons spoke fluent German and knew the country well, she did not risk speaking German with a Canadian accent. Using her acting skills, she posed as the young woman's mentally-challenged auntie who could not speak because of a cleft palate. The pair walked and evaded capture for three weeks, exchanging labour for food and lodging, often in a barn. During that time, they covered approximately 125 km through Germany Parsons and her husband Leonhardt were reunited after the war, but he never fully recovered from his imprisonment and died in 1956. Soon after his death, Parsons learned that he had left one quarter of his estate to his mistress. Shortly after the funeral, Parsons learned that Leonhardt had a biological son. Under Dutch law, he was entitled to three quarters of Leonhardt's multi-million guilder estate. Parsons was left with nothing. Although she launched a legal battle that would span several years and one ocean, she was unsuccessful. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mona_Louise_Parsons#cite_note-autogenerated1-1
