5 ESSENTIAL STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE EMBARKING ON AN ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY

Starting a business is an exciting and ambitious venture, but it is not without its challenges. With 92% of entrepreneurs reporting they have no regrets about starting their businesses, it is clear that the rewards can be significant. However, despite the inspiring success stories, it is important to remember that entrepreneurship is far from easy. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, around 20% of new businesses fail within the first year, and nearly 50% fail by year five. For those considering entrepreneurship, thorough preparation is crucial. Below are five essential steps to help lay the foundation for entrepreneurial success.

Conduct thorough market research

Before any significant steps are taken, it is essential to ensure that the business idea has potential. Market research is the first and most crucial step. This process helps entrepreneurs understand if there is a demand for their product or service, identify competitors, and define the target audience. By understanding current market conditions, entrepreneurs can also uncover gaps in the market that others may have overlooked, providing a unique opportunity to stand out.

Market research is not only about confirming the demand for a product; it is also about understanding why customers would choose one business over another. In an already crowded space, entrepreneurs must find a niche to differentiate themselves. Research indicates that businesses with diverse leadership, especially those with women in decision-making roles, tend to perform better. Companies with at least one woman on the executive board outperform those without. Therefore, conducting market research with an eye on diverse perspectives and untapped audiences is invaluable.

Market research also helps identify potential threats and opportunities within the industry. Understanding competitors and their strategies is vital to avoiding surprises. In fact, 61% of entrepreneurs find customers through

powerful word-of-mouth referrals, highlighting the importance of thorough research.

Write a detailed business plan

Once market research is complete and the business idea seems promising, the next step is to create a solid business plan. A business plan serves as a blueprint for the company, guiding decisions and offering a reference for growth. A comprehensive business plan should cover the company’s goals, marketing strategies, target market, financial forecasts, and funding requirements.

Entrepreneurs must ask themselves key questions when crafting their business plans: What are the company’s core objectives? What steps will be taken to achieve these goals in the next year? Who is the ideal customer, and how will they be reached? The answers to these questions will help build a clear framework for the business and prepare entrepreneurs for future obstacles. According to statistics, 37% of entrepreneurs anticipate higher sales and annual recurring revenue (ARR) in the coming year, suggesting that business planning plays a significant role in shaping successful outcomes.

Understand financial requirements

With a business plan in place, entrepreneurs need to turn their attention to the financial aspects of the business. Running a company requires more than just an idea; it requires capital. Entrepreneurs must determine how much money is needed to start the business and how they will raise these funds. Whether through bootstrapping, crowdfunding, or applying for small business loans, entrepreneurs must be clear on their financial needs.

Startup costs vary depending on the business, but they generally include expenses for office space, equipment, permits, employee wages, marketing, and insurance. Entrepreneurs should also plan for at least six months of operating expenses, as it is not uncommon for new

businesses to take time to turn a profit. In fact, 86% of small business owners report that owning a business has helped them meet their personal financial goals, underscoring the importance of strong financial planning for long-term success.

Additionally, entrepreneurs must consider whether they will seek external funding through loans, investors, or crowdfunding, or whether they will rely on personal savings and assets. Research reveals that 75% of entrepreneurs use their personal funds to finance their ventures, while 18% turn to friends and family for support. Entrepreneurs must have a clear understanding of their financial goals and be aware of the risks involved in any financing method.

Seek expert guidance

Starting a business is rarely a solo venture. It is always beneficial to surround oneself with knowledgeable experts who can offer guidance throughout the journey. Whether it is an experienced mentor, a financial advisor, or a legal expert, having someone to turn to for advice can help avoid costly mistakes. No one expects entrepreneurs to know everything - entrepreneurship is about continuous learning and adaptation.

A mentor can provide valuable insight and help entrepreneurs understand the broader picture based on their own experiences. For example, a mentor can guide an entrepreneur on how to structure the business, address legal considerations, and develop growth strategies. Beyond mentorship, it is crucial to tap into expertise from various fields such as marketing, sales, and finance. Their advice will prove essential in making informed decisions that contribute to long-term success. According to entrepreneurs, 40% of crowdfunding campaigns raise funds specifically for business ventures, illustrating the importance of expert advice in successfully securing funding.

Focus on marketing and growth

With the product, plan, and finances in place, the next step is to develop a solid marketing strategy to raise awareness. Many new business owners make the mistake of focusing heavily on product development and neglecting marketing until after the launch. Without marketing, a business will struggle to attract customers and build

brand recognition.

Entrepreneurs should create an Annual Marketing Plan aligned with their business goals. This plan should identify the most effective channels to reach their target audience, such as social media, search engine optimization (SEO), influencer partnerships, or paid advertising. The marketing strategy should focus on campaigns that align with the main goals - whether building brand awareness, generating sales, or increasing customer loyalty. Many entrepreneurs have found that artificial intelligence (AI) plays an increasing role in marketing, with 59% of startup founders reporting that AI has helped them reach qualified prospects. As the business grows, scaling marketing efforts becomes essential to reaching a broader audience and sustaining long-term success.

The journey to entrepreneurship is both thrilling and fulfilling, but it is important to remember that success rarely happens overnight. It requires careful research, meticulous planning, and strategic thinking. By following these five essential steps - conducting thorough market research, writing a solid business plan, understanding financial requirements, seeking expert guidance, and focusing on effective marketing - entrepreneurs will be well-prepared to face challenges and set their business up for success.

Though the road may be bumpy, with proper preparation, the entrepreneurial journey can lead to lasting success. With 78% of small business owners reporting that their businesses are profitable, the chances of success increase when entrepreneurs take the time to plan, learn, and adapt. By building a strong foundation, businesses can thrive and grow, making the entrepreneurial journey a rewarding one. ■

HOME-BASED BUSINESSES:

INSPIRING SUCCESS STORIES OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS THRIVING

In a world where innovation and entrepreneurship have become more accessible than ever, home-based businesses have become a transformative avenue for women, enabling them to turn their passions into profitable ventures, achieve financial independence, and make a meaningful impact on their communities. From humble kitchens and living rooms, countless women have transformed simple ideas into thriving enterprises, proving that the journey to greatness often begins at home.

These businesses offer the perfect

blend of flexibility and creativity, allowing women to balance personal responsibilities while building something extraordinary. In fact, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), women’s startup activity rates have seen a significant rise over the past two decades, a testament to their growing influence in shaping industries and communities.

In the late 19th century, Sarah Breedlove began experiencing severe hair loss, a common issue for Afro-American women at that time in the United States due to

poor hair products. Frustrated by the lack of effective solutions, Sarah experimented with several homemade remedies and developed her formula to promote hair growth and improve scalp health. From her kitchen, she began selling ‘Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower,’ a product that would become a household name among African American women.

Her journey began when she decided to market her product to African American women, a segment largely ignored by mainstream companies. She conducted door-to-door sales,

emphasized personal connection, and expanded production.

In 1910, she established her headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana, with a factory, a beauty school, and a training program for sales agents. These agents, known as “Walker Agents,” earned a living while empowering other women with beauty and self-care.

Madam Walker was not just about a home-run business by a woman, but an example of women’s empowerment, and service and an inspiration for countless

women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.

Just as Sarah pioneered solutions for her community, Cher Wang carved her niche in the male-dominated tech industry.

HTC: Cher Wang’s Homegrown Vision

Cher Wang , a trailblazing woman entrepreneur from Taiwan, turned her passion for technology into a global success story. Starting with a simple yet ambitious vision, she co-founded HTC (High Tech

Computer Corporation) in 1997 , transforming it from humble beginnings into a trailblazer in the mobile and tech industries.

Cher Wang’s journey began not in a sprawling office but with the mindset of a visionary entrepreneur determined to build something revolutionary. Born into a family with a strong business background, Cher drew inspiration from her education in economics at the University of California, Berkeley, and her exposure to Silicon Valley’s innovation culture.

Recognizing the rising demand for personal technology in the late 1990s, Cher envisioned a company that could design and develop cutting-edge devices. With limited resources and a small team, HTC initially operated like a home-based business, focusing on contract work for established brands. As a woman entrepreneur in the male-dominated tech industry, Wang brought fresh perspectives, unwavering determination, and a unique vision to HTC.

Takeaway: Cher Wang’s journey with HTC exemplifies how women entrepreneurs can leverage vision and persistence to grow from small beginnings to global innovation leaders.

The Creative Baker who Built an Empire

Meet Pooja Dhingra, a pastry chef from India who started her baking journey from her home kitchen. Driven by a love for macarons and a dream, Pooja

launched her home-based venture in Mumbai. Initially, she juggled baking orders with learning about business operations. Through sheer dedication, her brand, Le15 Patisserie, grew into one of the most recognized names in India’s culinary world.

What’s remarkable about Pooja’s story is her ability to combine creativity with savvy marketing. Using social media platforms, she connected with her audience, turning followers into loyal customers. Today, she owns multiple outlets and has authored bestselling books on baking and entrepreneurship.

Takeaway: Start small, focus on your craft, and embrace the power of social media to amplify your reach.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

For many women, home-based businesses are not just a choice but a necessity. Balancing family

responsibilities while pursuing financial independence often means working from home. In the United States, women-owned home-based businesses generate nearly $427 billion annually, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

However, challenges like limited resources, societal expectations, and lack of formal training often stand in the way. Yet, women like Masami Sato, the founder of B1G1 (Buy1Give1), show us how to overcome these hurdles. Her journey began with a simple yet profound question: “What if every business could make giving a part of its everyday operations?” This idea became the foundation of her home-based venture, B1G1 (Buy1Give1).

Masami started B1G1 from her living room, with a mission to create a world where every business activity contributes to a better future. Her concept was simple yet powerful—connect businesses with meaningful giving projects.

Today, B1G1 has facilitated over 320 million giving impacts in more than 50 countries, supporting projects that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Takeaway: Masami’s journey illustrates how a meaningful idea, combined with determination, can overcome challenges and create a ripple effect of positive impact worldwide.

Sarah Breedlove’s journey resonates even today, with women’s startup activity rates climbing to 10.4% in recent years, as reported by GEM in 2023/24 Women’s Entrepreneurship Report. Women’s startup activity rates have risen from an average of 6.1% between 2001-2005 to 10.4% for the 2021-2023 time period across 30 GEM-participating countries. Women’s established business ownership rates across the 30 countries compared have also gone up from 4.2% to the current 5.9%. High rates were particularly strong for women in South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Lithuania, Puerto Rico, and Thailand.

Pooja Dhingra’s ability to leverage social media illustrates how technology enables home-based

businesses to connect with global audiences. Here are some tips to give colors to your home ventures:

• Identify Your Passion: Start with something you love- be it baking, writing, crafting, or consulting.

• Research Your Market: Understand your audience and tailor your offerings to meet their needs.

• Create a Business Plan: Define your goals, pricing strategy, and marketing approach.

• Leverage Technology: Use social media, websites, and e-commerce platforms to promote your products or services.

• Network and Collaborate: Join online forums, attend webinars, and connect with fellow entrepreneurs for guidance and support.

Inspiration for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Starting a business is rarely easy, but the rewards of building something meaningful and impactful are worth the effort. Women like Sarah Breedlove, Cher Wang, Pooja Dhingra, and Masami Sato are proof that dreams when pursued with determination, can transform into impactful

ventures. Their stories remind us that no matter where you start, with passion and perseverance, the possibilities are endless. If you’ve ever envisioned starting your own home-based business, there’s no better time than now to take that first step. Remember, every successful venture begins with a single, inspired idea.

Consider platforms like Etsy, Shopify, or social media tools to kickstart your business idea. Your journey can begin today, just as Sarah Breedlove’s did from her kitchen or Masami Sato from her living room.

What happens when voices silenced for centuries finally break through? In 2024, women creators across art, music, and literature are rewriting history, reshaping culture, and redefining their fields on their own terms. Their contributions, often marginalized or overlooked throughout history, have always been revolutionary, and today, they continue to break down barriers, challenge norms, and reshape artistic landscapes. The world is beginning to recognize their brilliance—painters, writers, musicians, and more— whose work not only reflects their distinct experiences but also disrupts societal expectations and fuels cultural transformation. As we celebrate their achievements, it’s clear that women creators are carving out spaces of empowerment, giving voice to the voiceless, and forging paths that will inspire generations to come.

This year is particularly significant in the ongoing journey toward gender equality in the arts. From global

music stages to galleries and literature, women creators are pushing boundaries, and 2024 marks a moment where the fruits of their labor are beginning to be widely acknowledged. It’s a time to reflect on both the progress made and the work that still lies ahead.

Yet, despite this momentum, gender disparities remain profound. According to a USC Annenberg study, women make up just 21.6% of those signed by galleries and labels in the music industry, with female songwriters accounting for a mere 12.6%, and women producers a staggering 2.6%. This imbalance is also evident in the auction world, where works by female artists sell for an average of 42% less than those by their male counterparts. Despite their growing visibility, these statistics reveal the systemic challenges that still persist.

The underrepresentation of women creators is not only an issue of fairness but also a missed opportunity for

growth and innovation. Studies have shown that galleries with more women artists tend to perform better, and yet, women remain underrepresented in both gallery representation and auction sales. This calls for systemic change in how art is valued and promoted, and there is a growing movement to address these disparities. From local initiatives to international platforms, women creators today are amplifying their voices, reshaping industries, and reimagining what the future of art can look like.

From Antiquity to Modernity

Women have always been involved in artistic processes, yet their contributions were often erased or minimized. In ancient Egypt, for example, women were key to cultural practices as weavers, jewelers, and creators of religious artifacts, though their identities were largely forgotten. One of the few early female artists known to history is

HER VOICE, HER VISION:

WOMEN SHAPING THE ARTS IN 2024

Timareta, a Greek painter from the 5th century BC, mentioned by the Roman writer Pliny the Elder. She not only demonstrated exceptional skill as a painter but also defied expectations by refusing to paint a portrait of the goddess Artemis, asserting her artistic independence in a time when women were rarely afforded such autonomy.

As we move through history, women continue to face significant barriers. In the Middle Ages, their participation in the arts was often restricted to religious commissions or domestic crafts, with few having the opportunity to formally study art. Nevertheless, some managed to leave an indelible mark. Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th-century German abbess, philosopher, and composer, is one such figure. Though known primarily for her theological work, Hildegard also produced intricate religious illuminations and pioneering sacred music compositions, defying the era’s restrictions on women and establishing herself as a trailblazer in multiple fields.

- Bertolt Brecht “
Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.

Breaking Barriers: Women in the Arts

For centuries, women were denied access to formal artistic education. Most major European art academies were male-only, and many believed women lacked the intellectual capacity for advanced artistic training. As a result, women were often excluded from prestigious institutions that would have helped them advance in their careers. Yet, some defied these odds and achieved great success. One such artist is Artemisia Gentileschi, an Italian Baroque painter who gained international acclaim in her lifetime. Known for her portrayal of female strength and agency, Gentileschi’s work often explored themes of violence and resilience. Her painting Judith Beheading Holofernes became one of her most famous works, symbolizing not only female empowerment but also her personal experiences, including surviving sexual assault and a subsequent trial, which infused her art with raw emotion and defiance.

Despite these systemic hurdles, the 19th and early 20th centuries saw significant change. With the rise of the suffragette movement and growing demands for gender equality, many women artists began to explore subjects and techniques that deviated from traditional themes. The Impressionist and Modernist movements, for example, provided women with the freedom to express themselves more openly, marking a revolution not only in artistic techniques but also in how women viewed their own place in the artistic canon.

While Artemisia Gentileschi challenged societal norms in the 17th century, today’s female artists like Tyla and Beabadoobee are continuing this tradition by redefining creative spaces.

Women in Music: Redefining Sound

Music, much like the visual arts, has been a space where women have fought for recognition. In the 21st century, female musicians are breaking new ground, transcending genres and reshaping the future of music.

• Tyla (2002–Present) is a South African artist who has captivated global audiences, particularly with her fusion of pop and Amapiano, a genre deeply rooted in South Africa’s townships. Tyla’s distinctive blend of global pop influences and local rhythms is helping her carve out a niche in the international music scene. Her tracks are a testament to her bold artistic vision and creativity, as she navigates the complexities of being a female artist in a male-dominated industry.

• Keturah (1997–Present), a 27-year-old Malawian artist, blends African rhythms with global influences, creating a unique sound that resonates worldwide. Her debut album tells the story of her journey from a small village in Malawi to Venice, California, showcasing both her personal growth and the rich cultural heritage that informs her music. Keturah is a trailblazer, breaking barriers and establishing herself as a leading figure in the global music industry.

• Beabadoobee (2000–Present), a FilipinoBritish singer-songwriter, has emerged as one of the most exciting voices in indie and alternative music. Known for her raw emotionality, Beabadoobee’s music delves into themes of youth, love, and longing. Her track Coffee became a breakout hit, catapulting her into the spotlight. Her rise reflects the growing influence of women in the indie music scene and underscores how new generations of female musicians are shaping cultural movements.

Women in Literature: Shaping the Narrative

Female authors have long been pioneers, challenging societal expectations and exploring themes that break from the status quo. In recent years, several women writers have pushed the boundaries of literary form and content in exciting new ways.

• Sheila Heti (1976–Present) is a Canadian writer known for her experimental approach to storytelling. Her work, such as Alphabetical Diaries, is a testament to her innovative nature, restructuring years of personal journal entries into a non-linear narrative that challenges traditional memoirs. Heti’s work explores time, memory, and self-reflection, offering a fragmented yet powerful lens on the complexities of life.

• Miranda July (1974–Present), an American artist whose work spans literature, film, and performance art, is known for her offbeat, surreal storytelling. Her novel All Fours explores the theme of perimenopause, offering a deeply personal yet universally relatable narrative about transformation and identity. July’s quirky and experimental style encourages readers to think critically about the body, freedom, and life’s transitions.

• Joyce Carol Oates (1938–Present), an American writer renowned for her exploration of dark psychological themes, continues to break ground in the literary world. In her novel Butcher, Oates explores the grotesque reality of medical experimentation on women in the 19th century, critiquing the patriarchal treatment of women’s bodies. Her work remains relevant in today’s discourse on trauma, power, and the abuse of women.

• Rupi Kaur (1992-Present) rose to fame with her poetry collection, Milk and Honey (2014) which ended up selling over six million copies globally and sat on The New York Times bestseller list for almost four years. She produced Rupi Kaur Live in 2021, a first-of-its-kind poetry special on Amazon Prime Video. Her work focuses on love, loss, trauma, healing and compassion. She stands out as a role-model for modern women in arts and literature.

These women—whether through visual art, music, or literature—are not only breaking barriers but also redefining the future of their fields. They challenge the structures that have historically limited them, paving the way for new forms of creative expression and greater representation.

As we celebrate these achievements, let us also take action. We must support initiatives that promote gender equity in the arts, amplify the voices of women creators, and work to dismantle the barriers that persist. In 2024, we can look forward to a future where women in art, music, and literature are not only recognized but celebrated for the power, creativity, and brilliance they bring to the world.

As we celebrate these achievements, let us also work toward a world where every woman creator has the opportunity to thrive, inspiring generations to come with their brilliance. ■

PACIFIC CROSS:

For more than 75 years, Pacific Cross International has been a pioneer in providing health, personal accident, and travel insurance to clients across Asia. Over this time, the company has grown from its humble beginnings to become a trusted name in the insurance market, serving clients from 90 nationalities in 43 countries. Pacific Cross is committed to offering personalised and accessible insurance solutions that meet the needs of its customers, no matter where their journey takes them.

A rich history of growth and expansion

The journey of Pacific Cross began in 1949 when it was initially founded as State Bonding and Insurance Company, Inc. From these early years, the company gradually built its reputation in the insurance industry, recognising the need for better health coverage and eventually creating a medical insurance division in 1977 to meet this demand. By 1986, Pacific Cross had rebranded as Blue Cross Insurance, Inc., focusing on medical, personal accident, and travel insurance. This shift marked the company’s commitment to the growing health insurance sector, a move that would set the stage for its future success.

However, the most significant change came in 2015, when Pacific Cross took a bold step forward by rebranding once again, this time to Pacific Cross, aligning itself with its regional partners in the Pacific Cross Group. This strategic shift allowed the company to strengthen its collaboration with sister companies across Asia and create a more integrated network that could deliver insurance solutions that were not just regional but also global in their scope. The rebranding also positioned Pacific Cross to leverage the opportunities arising from ASEAN integration, allowing the company to expand its reach and services to better serve the needs of an increasingly mobile and connected world.

Over the years, Pacific Cross has extended its reach to several countries, establishing offices in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Through these offices, Pacific Cross has built a network of trusted hospitals, medical clinics, and healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive support for medical emergencies and healthcare needs across the region. Today, Pacific Cross provides coverage for over 1.5 million travellers, totalling more than 5 million travel days annually. This extensive coverage ensures that clients are always protected, whether they are on holiday, travelling for business, or living abroad.

A comprehensive insurance portfolio for a changing world

Pacific Cross has always been at the forefront of addressing the evolving insurance needs of its clients. The company’s range of offerings includes health insurance, personal accident insurance, and travel insurance, with solutions tailored to the specific needs of individuals, families, and corporate clients. Pacific Cross understands that the world is increasingly interconnected, and the demand for international insurance solutions is growing. That’s why the company offers global protection, ensuring that clients are covered wherever they are in the world.

One of Pacific Cross’s key strengths lies in its ability to offer insurance that goes beyond basic coverage. The company’s philosophy is simple but powerful: “More than just insurance.” For Pacific Cross, this means providing peace of mind, ensuring that clients are not only protected financially but also supported throughout their journeys, whether it be through medical assistance, emergency services, or customer support. The company’s slogan, “More than just insurance. Pacific Cross provides peace of mind”, reflects its mission to provide customers with not just coverage, but the guidance and advice they

need to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Pacific Cross has built a reputation for offering international protection that is tailored to each customer. The company offers a variety of health insurance plans, with coverage amounts of up to THB 50 million per patient per stay, ensuring that clients have access to the best care when they need it most. Additionally, Pacific Cross provides Schengen-accredited travel insurance, which offers robust protection for both domestic and international journeys, giving travellers the security and confidence to explore the world without worry.

In each country where Pacific Cross operates, the company has partnered with an extensive network of hospitals, medical clinics, and local healthcare professionals to ensure seamless access to medical services. Whether clients are in need of routine care or emergency

treatment, Pacific Cross’s network is designed to provide assistance and support wherever they are. This extensive network ensures that clients receive the best possible care, regardless of their location.

The focus on health and wellness

Pacific Cross is not just about providing insurance—it’s about promoting health and wellness. In recent years, the company has focused on delivering a more comprehensive approach to health insurance by encouraging healthier lifestyles among its clients. Through various health promotion initiatives, Pacific Cross has provided discounts on health check-ups, launched telemedicine services, and introduced fitness collaborations to support the well-being of its customers. These initiatives align with the company’s commitment to improving the health of its clients and providing them with the tools they need to live healthier lives.

Moreover, the company has launched several initiatives aimed at promoting healthy eating, including access to wellness programs and resources that guide customers in making healthier choices. By incorporating health and wellness into the insurance experience, Pacific Cross has created a more holistic approach to insurance, helping customers stay healthy while offering financial protection.

Strategic leadership and vision for the future

Pacific Cross’s success is also driven by strong and visionary leadership. At the helm of the company is Dr. Bui Minh Mai Khanh, the Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Cross Health Insurance PCL. Under Dr. Khanh’s leadership, the company has embraced new strategies focused on customer satisfaction, strategic growth, and operational excellence. Her approach has led to continuous improvement in the customer experience and the company’s ability to stay ahead in an ever-changing industry.

In a recent statement, Dr. Khanh expressed her commitment to the company’s future, saying, “Our success is a testament to our dedication to innovation, customer-centric services, strategic growth initiatives, and strong partnerships. As we advance to the next level, we remain committed to enhancing the customer experience and solidifying our position as a leader in Thailand’s health and travel insurance industry.” Under Dr. Khanh’s leadership, Pacific Cross has been able to maintain a strong market presence while adapting to the needs of an increasingly diverse and dynamic customer base.

Dr. Khanh’s vision for the company emphasises continuous growth and an unwavering commitment to the needs of customers. As Pacific Cross looks to the future, the company is well-positioned to continue expanding its reach, building strong partnerships, and delivering top-quality service to clients across Asia. The company’s focus on innovation and customer-centricity ensures that it will remain a leader in the health and travel insurance space for years to come.

In this exclusive interview with Women’s Tabloid, Dr. Bui Minh Mai Khanh shares her leadership journey, the key factors behind Pacific Cross’s growth, and the company’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction in the evolving health insurance landscape.

Pacific Cross has seen impressive growth over the years. What do you think has been the key factor driving this success?

Our growth at Pacific Cross has been driven by a clear strategic vision, a commitment to customer-centric solutions, and ongoing investments in our intermediaries, people and technology. By prioritizing a deep understanding of our diverse clientele and leveraging data-driven insights, we have established a strong foundation that enables us to continually innovate and meet the ever-evolving landscape of our industry.

As a leading health insurance provider, we understand the critical importance of being there for our policyholders when they need us most. This commitment drives our focus on delivering exceptional customer service, starting from the moment a policy is purchased to when medical assistance is required. By leveraging our extensive expertise and market insights, we have built strong relationships with our distribution partners and clients, who trust our proven track record and internal capabilities in providing reliable health insurance solutions. This approach has solidified our position as a market leader. In recognition of our rapid yet sustainable growth, we are proud to have received the prestigious 2024 ‘Best Health Insurer in Thailand’ award from Insurance Asia. We see our recent success not as a final milestone, but as a stepping stone toward further growth and innovation. Our focus remains on pushing the boundaries of product development, advancing operational excellence, ensuring financial stability, refining risk assessment strategies, and consistently delivering value to all our stakeholders.

How do you envision the future of the health insurance industry in Thailand, and how is Pacific Cross positioning itself to stay ahead of these changes?

The health insurance industry in Thailand is undergoing rapid transformation, influenced by advancements in medical technology, shifting customer expectations, unprecedented post-COVID-19 global medical inflation, regulatory changes, government programs, and evolving residency requirements. Additionally, there is an increasing emphasis on preventive care. We anticipate a growing demand for personalized health solutions, seamless digital experiences, 24/7 accessible customer service, and value-added wellness and incentive programs. Financial

instability in risk assessment across the industry has led some competitors to implement significant premium hikes and introduce co-payments for high-cost medical providers. This is where Pacific Cross holds a competitive edge, thanks to our proven expertise in product development, risk assessment, and consistent financial stability.

To stay ahead of these industry changes, Pacific Cross is investing heavily in digital transformation, enhancing data-driven decision-making, and broadening our product portfolio to meet emerging healthcare demands. Operational efficiency remains a top priority, as it is

essential for maintaining customer satisfaction and mitigating premium increases. We have already deployed AI-powered technology to streamline parts of our claims process, ensuring faster and more accurate service. In today’s digital landscape, customers expect frictionless transactions via mobile devices, and we are making significant investments in enhancing our digital platforms. Our ultimate objective is to stay ahead of these changes by providing flexible, comprehensive health plans while focusing on advanced digital solutions and continually improving risk assessment strategies to deliver sustainable, high-quality insurance products and services.

In recent years, digital technology has played an increasingly important role in business. Can you share more about how Pacific Cross is evolving digitally to improve customer access and services?

Digital technology has become a fundamental pillar in how Pacific Cross delivers value to its customers. Recognizing the growing demand for seamless access and efficient service, we have embraced a holistic digital transformation strategy. This includes the development of user-friendly digital platforms, such as an online quotation and application portal, and a mobile app that enables customers to effortlessly purchase policies, connect with experienced advisors, access policy information, submit claims, and track claim status in real-time. We believe the key to success lies in leveraging digital technology to enhance—not replace—the human experience. Health insurance is inherently complex, and providing expert guidance through digital channels ensures that clients receive both convenience and personalized care. These digital solutions significantly reduce administrative workloads, allowing us to focus more on delivering value.

Beyond customer-facing platforms, we have recently introduced AI-powered solutions to optimize internal operations, including claims processing and risk assessment. By automating routine tasks, we are able to accelerate processing times, reduce errors, and consistently improve service quality. Our objective is to offer a frictionless digital experience that aligns with modern customer expectations.

We are acutely aware of the evolving landscape of

health insurance, where customers increasingly seek to engage and purchase policies through digital channels. As such, we are committed to creating intuitive, modern touchpoints that enhance our brand image and fulfill our brand promise.

Moreover, we continue to invest in advanced data analytics to gain deeper insights into customer behavior and preferences, enabling us to offer more tailored products and services. This data-driven approach not only enhances customer experience but also bolsters our ability to maintain financial stability and competitive pricing.

By prioritizing digital innovation and operational efficiency, Pacific Cross is ensuring that our customers benefit from faster, more reliable, and more convenient health insurance solutions.

Pacific Cross has emphasized customer satisfaction and operational excellence. Can you provide specific examples of how the company is enhancing the customer experience?

At Pacific Cross, delivering exceptional customer satisfaction and achieving operational excellence are central to our mission. We continuously innovate to enhance customer experience by introducing initiatives that improve accessibility, convenience, and service quality. A prime example of this commitment is our everexpanding internal customer service team, which offers 24/7 multilingual support for both Thai and expatriate clients. This ensures that every customer receives clear, personalized assistance when they most need it.

Our team undergoes comprehensive and consistent training, emphasizing effective communication with a diverse clientele. High proficiency in English is a core requirement for our representatives to ensure seamless interactions. Additionally, our training programs cultivate a strong “customer-first” mindset, empowering our team to prioritize client needs in every interaction.

To further enhance service, our stringent Service Level Agreement (SLA) guarantees prompt responses to client inquiries, ensuring policyholders can always connect with a customer service representative, day or night. Our advanced internal systems provide real-time updates on claims statuses, giving policyholders clear visibility into the progress of their claims.

We firmly believe that the strength of a health insurance provider lies in its strategic partnerships with medical

providers. We take pride in offering cashless treatment through an extensive network of over 550 medical providers across Thailand, positioning us as a leader in the industry in this regard.

These concerted efforts culminated in Pacific Cross receiving the prestigious “Best Customer Service” award from Insurance Asia in 2023, underscoring our dedication to delivering service excellence.

You’ve mentioned the importance of sustainability and social responsibility. How is Pacific Cross incorporating these values into its operations and future strategy?

At Pacific Cross, we are committed to sustainability and social responsibility, integrating these values into both our operations and long-term strategy. One of our key initiatives is our paperless office program, aimed at reducing paper consumption and minimizing environmental

impact. By digitizing processes such as policy issuance, claims submissions, and internal communications, we have significantly reduced our reliance on physical documents, contributing to a greener future. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we proactively supported the community by donating food and medical resources to a charity named “Bangkok Community Help.” This initiative provided critical assistance to those in need.

In addition to these efforts, we actively promote preventive health through wellness programs and strategic partnerships with medical providers, encouraging our clients to prioritize their health and well-being. Our wellness initiatives include providing access to comprehensive health screenings. Moving forward, we aim to expand our partnership network to include a broader range of medical providers and enhance the availability of preventive health services.

Furthermore, we are actively pursuing sustainable product development by introducing health plans with integrated wellness options, aimed at promoting preventive care and long-term well-being. Over the years, we have consistently invested in our employees’ health and wellness by offering annual health check-ups, fitness membership subsidies, wellness-focused activities, and fostering a safe, inclusive workplace culture.

By aligning our business practices with sustainable and socially responsible principles, Pacific Cross aims to not only deliver exceptional health insurance solutions but also create a lasting positive impact on the environment and the communities we serve.

Given the company’s diverse customer base, what challenges have you encountered in catering to both Thai and international clients, and how have you addressed them?

Catering to a diverse customer base presents unique challenges due to the varying healthcare and insurance structures globally. Clients from different countries often arrive with differing expectations about how health insurance should function, influenced by their home countries’ healthcare systems. In Thailand, the evolving regulatory landscape and changes in residency requirements have added complexity to health insurance offerings, requiring us to stay agile and continuously adapt our products and services.

One key challenge our customer base faces is the language barrier, especially when dealing with expatriate clients who may not be fluent in English or Thai. To address this, we have built multicultural client advisory and customer service teams with members who are proficient in multiple languages, not only English or Thai. This ensures clear communication and personalized service, allowing us to meet the needs of clients from diverse backgrounds effectively.

We recognize that a significant portion of our customer base consists of expatriates, many of whom are retirees who have relocated from other countries. We understand that it is common for these clients to have developed pre-existing conditions over time. To address this specific need, we introduced a product called “Expat Care” in 2024, which provides coverage for pre-existing conditions and offers greater flexibility in selecting zones of coverage.

By embracing diversity, investing in a multilingual team, and continually refining our products to meet regulatory changes and customer expectations, Pacific Cross remains a trusted partner for health insurance in Thailand.

Looking forward, what are your top priorities for the company in the next 5 to 10 years? How will Pacific Cross continue to differentiate itself in the competitive health insurance market?

Over the next 5 to 10 years and beyond, we aim to further establish ourselves as a leading player in Thailand’s health insurance market. Currently ranked as the 3rd largest health non-life insurance provider, our objective is to expand our products and services to reach a broader audience, fostering inclusivity across all customer segments and ensuring accessible medical coverage for all.

Guided by our five company pillars, we consistently translate these strategies into actionable short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals. A customer-centric approach remains central to our growth strategy. We will continue to prioritize the needs of our customers and intermediaries by providing exceptional service, competitive product offerings, and fair pricing.

Receiving the “Best Woman CEO – Health Insurance –Thailand” award from your esteemed publication is an honor, and I am proud to use this platform to advocate for a vision centered on innovation, people empowerment, and customer-centric growth. By nurturing a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement, we are not only shaping the future of Pacific Cross but also advancing the broader mission of making quality health insurance coverage accessible to everyone. Looking ahead, I remain committed to inspiring the next generation of leaders and ensuring our strategies drive sustainable and lasting success.

Pacific Cross’s 75-year legacy of providing comprehensive insurance solutions and peace of mind to millions of customers is a remarkable achievement. From its humble beginnings in 1949 to its current position as a leading provider of health, personal accident, and travel insurance across Asia, Pacific Cross has consistently focused on delivering the best possible customer experience. The company’s global reach, combined with its deep understanding of local markets, allows it to offer tailored solutions that meet the diverse needs of its clients.

As the company continues to expand its offerings and strengthen its network of partners, Pacific Cross remains a trusted and reliable provider of insurance solutions. Through its commitment to health and wellness, innovation, and customer satisfaction, Pacific Cross is well-positioned to continue serving the needs of individuals and families across Asia, offering the security and peace of mind they need, wherever their journeys take them. ■

ADB AT THE FOREFRONT OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) plays a crucial role in shaping the future of women in the Asia-Pacific region. It is committed to promoting sustainable economic development and addressing poverty, aiming to create a prosperous, inclusive, and resilient region. However, despite the progress made, significant challenges remain. Around 263 million people in the region still live on less than $1.90 a day, and over 1.1 billion survive on less than $3.20 a day. In the face of these challenges, ADB’s focus extends beyond just eradicating poverty; it is also dedicated to tackling inequality, with a particular emphasis on empowering women through various programs and initiatives.

ADB’s commitment to economic development

Founded in 1966, the Asian Development Bank was established to foster economic growth and cooperation in Asia, a region predominantly dependent on agriculture. Over time, its mandate has expanded to include

the provision of loans, grants, equity investments, and technical assistance to promote both social and economic development across its member countries. ADB is deeply committed to policy dialogues, resource mobilization, and co-financing with international partners, aiming to improve millions of lives by sustaining economic progress and eradicating extreme poverty.

Women’s empowerment: Overcoming challenges

Despite significant strides towards gender equality, many barriers still prevent women from fully participating in society. Women in Asia continue to face challenges in education, employment, and leadership roles. Deeprooted gender norms and discrimination limit women’s opportunities and their economic security. Issues such as unequal pay, limited access to education and skills development, and the disproportionate burden of household responsibilities severely hinder women’s economic potential. Gender-based violence remains a serious

problem, especially in South Asia and the Pacific, where the prevalence of violence against women exceeds the global average.

In Asia, only 49% of women of working age are in the labour force, compared to 80% of men. Women also earn, on average, only 77% of what their male counterparts earn. ADB acknowledges these inequalities and supports initiatives that promote women’s economic empowerment, particularly in male-dominated sectors.

Addressing poverty and reducing inequality

To combat poverty and reduce inequality, ADB tackles the root causes of gender disparities. This includes improving access to education, offering skills training, and supporting women’s entrepreneurship. ADB also works to reduce the burden of unpaid care work on women and helps maximize their potential in highvalue sectors like Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). When women are fully engaged in the economy, it fosters productivity, boosts economic diversification, and reduces income inequality, benefiting entire communities and economies.

Climate action and gender

Climate change is a growing issue in Asia, and its impacts are often felt more acutely by women, especially in countries with high levels of gender inequality. Women’s livelihoods are frequently reliant on natural resources, and extreme weather events like floods and droughts exacerbate their vulnerabilities. ADB focuses on integrating gender-responsive climate finance into its projects and initiatives. This includes developing gender-responsive nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and encouraging women’s participation in the renewable energy sector.

By building women’s skills, providing access to finance, and reforming policies that restrict women’s involvement in sectors like renewable energy, ADB helps ensure women’s active role in the transition to a sustainable, green economy. These efforts not only support climate action but also provide new economic opportunities for women in emerging sectors.

Making cities more livable

Urban development presents both challenges and opportunities for women. To ensure cities are inclusive, urban infrastructure must cater to the specific needs of

women and girls. Women often face greater barriers than men when it comes to accessing transport, ensuring personal safety, and using digital and public services. ADB is working to redesign urban environments with gender equality in mind. Its efforts focus on improving women’s access to public transport, ensuring their safety, and supporting digital inclusion, helping cities become more equitable and livable for everyone.

Rural development and food security

While Asia’s rapid economic growth has put pressure on its natural resources, many rural areas still face high levels of poverty, food insecurity, and poor nutrition. Women, especially in agriculture, continue to face considerable challenges, with gender disparities often worsening due to a lack of gender-focused interventions. ADB is addressing these issues by supporting rural infrastructure and technology projects that target women in agriculture. These initiatives help increase women’s access to finance, improve their skills in climate-smart agriculture, and ensure they are included in decisions related to food security. Empowering women farmers is key to building a more sustainable and food-secure future for the region.

Strengthening governance and institutional capacity

Gender equality is not only about economic opportunity but also about ensuring women’s participation in governance and decision-making processes. Women remain underrepresented in leadership roles, occupying only 6% of corporate board seats and 18% of legislative positions across Asia. ADB supports efforts to close this gap by equipping women with the necessary skills, knowledge, and opportunities to engage in governance and leadership roles. Through targeted initiatives and policies, ADB fosters a more inclusive political and institutional environment in the region.

ADB’s Women Empowerment Initiatives

ADB and SK Finance Join Forces to Support Women Entrepreneurs and Electric Vehicles in India

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has teamed up with SK Finance Limited to enhance financial access for women entrepreneurs and promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. This collaboration involves a senior secured loan of up to $100 million,

which will be allocated to support both women-led businesses and the growing EV market. Of this loan, at least 20% will be used for EV financing, while the rest will support micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), with a focus on women-owned businesses.

Education

Above All Foundation pledges $100 million for ADB education projects

The Education Above All (EAA) Foundation has committed a $100 million grant to co-finance education projects with ADB. This partnership aims to enhance access to education for disadvantaged children, youth, and particularly girls, with a focus on post-secondary education and skills training. The initiative also seeks to address barriers to education, such as poverty, discrimination, and conflict, while integrating climate change into education curricula and offering technical and vocational training.

ADB and LPBank partner to support women entrepreneurs in Vietnam

ADB has collaborated with Lien Viet Post Bank (LPBank) to provide an $80 million financing package aimed at improving access to capital for women-owned small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam. This agreement will allow LPBank to tailor its products

and services to better support women entrepreneurs, promoting greater economic empowerment for women across the country.

First-ever white book on women-owned SMEs launched in Vietnam

The Asian Development Bank, in partnership with Vietnam’s Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), has launched the first-ever White Book on women-owned small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the country. This report, developed under the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi), aims to lift barriers for women entrepreneurs and create a more supportive environment for business growth in Vietnam. The Asian Development Bank is playing a critical role in the pursuit of inclusive growth and sustainable development across Asia and the Pacific. By focusing on gender empowerment, ADB is not only helping lift millions of people out of poverty but also ensuring that women are at the heart of this transformation. Through various initiatives, ADB is addressing gender inequality, promoting women’s economic participation, and supporting the development of green and inclusive economies. By empowering women in all sectors, ADB is helping build a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable future for the region. ■

Tips for Shopping in Dubai

Dress Modestly: Dubai has a conservative culture, so dressing modestly is always recommended, particularly in more traditional areas.

Payment Methods: Credit cards are widely accepted, but it’s advisable to carry cash for smaller purchases, especially in the souks.

VAT Refunds: Tourists can claim a refund on Value Added Tax (VAT) for purchases made at participating stores. Be sure to keep all your receipts and necessary paperwork.

Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women & Children, located in Abu Dhabi, is a pioneering institution in the field of women’s and children’s healthcare and opened its doors in August 2015. This private, state-of-the-art hospital is dedicated to addressing the unique medical needs of women and children, offering a comprehensive range of services designed to meet the highest standards of care. With an unwavering commitment to quality, innovation, and patient-centered services, Danat Al Emarat is shaping the future of healthcare in the UAE and beyond.

Leadership and vision for the future

Danat Al Emarat’s success is driven by strong leadership, particularly under the guidance of Dr. Summia Zaher, the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital. Dr. Zaher has played a pivotal role in the development of Danat Al Emarat, particularly in the realm of maternal and reproductive healthcare. With over two decades of experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Zaher has worked tirelessly to elevate the quality of care and improve operational efficiency at the hospital. Her focus on integrating cutting-edge technology and ensuring high standards of patient care has played an integral role in the hospital’s growth and success.

Dr. Summia, you’ve had an impressive career in

Obstetrics and Gynaecology. What inspired you to pursue this field in the first place?

Born in Manchester to a family of doctors, it was a matter of time before I was recruited into the family business. Despite having initial childhood interests of being a business owner and teacher, it was my father who is now a retired obstetrician and gynaecologist who told me, you can be a doctor and a teacher, but you cannot be a teacher and a doctor! With that, along with my twin sister, we ‘discovered’ Dundee, the city of discovery (East of Scotland) and became the youngest medical students in our cohort. I graduated with the Margaret Fairlie prize in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and a strong impression left by my undergraduate professor of O&G, who surely is to be credited for helping me on my path to a career in O&G and igniting my interest and passion for medical education. A strong believer in the power that a good teacher can have on the lifelong future of a young student, from very early on in my career, I took an interest in teaching junior colleagues and students.

Having served as both Medical Director and now CEO at Danat Al Emarat Hospital, how do you see leadership in healthcare evolving in the coming years?

As we enter 2025, leadership continues to evolve in response to a world that is dynamic, diverse, and

INNOVATION MEETS COMPASSION IN WOMEN AND CHILDREN’S HEALTH: IN

CONVERSATION WITH DR. SUMMIA ZAHER

increasingly interconnected. Here are five leadership trends I believe will define the year ahead:

• Empathetic Leadership: Empathy is no longer a ‘nice to have’-it’s a necessity. Leaders who prioritize understanding and supporting their teams will foster stronger engagement and collaboration.

• Data-Driven Decisions: In an era of rapid digital transformation, leveraging data insights will empower leaders to make more informed, strategic decisions that drive impact.

• Sustainability-Focused Strategy: Leadership in 2025 will require a commitment to sustainability-not just in environmental terms, but in creating lasting, meaningful outcomes for communities and organizations.

• Inclusive Leadership: Diverse teams are powerful teams. Inclusive leadership will ensure everyone has a voice, driving innovation and equity in the workplace.

• Future-Ready Skills: The pace of change demands continuous learning. Leaders will need to model curiosity and adaptability to inspire their teams to grow with the times.

The future of leadership isn’t about maintaining the status quo-it’s about leading with purpose, flexibility, and a commitment to positive change.

What are the biggest challenges you face as CEO in managing a specialty hospital like Danat Al Emarat, and how do you approach overcoming them?

As CEO of Danat Al Emarat, one of the biggest challenges we face is maintaining a balance between delivering exceptional healthcare while also navigating the ever-evolving landscape of the healthcare industry. This includes managing the complexities of patient care,

staying ahead of technological advancements, adhering to regulations, and ensuring the financial sustainability of the hospital.

What truly fuels my ability to face these challenges head-on is the strength and brilliance of my incredible all-female executive leadership team. Their expertise, passion, and unwavering commitment to our mission inspire me every day. However, it is not only limited to them; the entire team at Danat Al Emarat brings in a wealth of talent, dedication, and professionalism that drives our success and shapes our future.

By fostering a culture of open communication, empowerment, and continuous learning, we are able to create a resilient and adaptive organization. We approach problem-solving not only with data and strategy but with the belief that our collective intelligence and diverse perspectives will always lead us to the best solutions.

The trust and respect within our leadership team are the foundation that enables us to innovate, adapt, and thrive, ultimately ensuring that Danat Al Emarat remains at the forefront of specialized healthcare for the community we serve.

With such an extraordinary team by my side, I am confident that no challenge is too great to overcome, and together, we will continue to elevate the standards of healthcare and improve lives in every possible way.

With your extensive experience in both clinical practice and medical leadership, what do you believe is the most important factor in providing high-quality care to women and children?

The most important factor in providing high-quality care to women and children is fostering a compassionate, patient-centered approach. It’s about seeing each woman and child as an individual, listening to their needs, and empowering them to be active participants in their own healthcare journey. At the heart of this is building trust—between the patient, their family, and the healthcare team.

Additionally, creating an environment where collaboration thrives, where clinical expertise is combined with empathy and a deep understanding of the unique challenges that women and children face, can lead to truly transformative care. It’s not just about treating illness; it’s about supporting the whole person—their emotional, psychological, and physical well-being.

When we approach healthcare with a holistic perspective and a focus on equity, we lay the foundation for not only healing, but for lasting positive impact in the lives of women and children.

Danat Al Emarat is part of the M42 group, which is known for integrating cutting-edge technologies. How do you see the role of innovation in healthcare shaping the future of maternal and reproductive care?

Innovation in healthcare is revolutionizing maternal and reproductive care, and the future holds immense promise. At the heart of this transformation is the integration of advanced technologies, which empower healthcare professionals to offer more personalized, efficient, and accurate care. From AI-driven diagnostics

to telemedicine and wearable health monitors, these advancements ensure that women receive timely and tailored interventions, often before issues arise.

For Danat Al Emarat, being part of the M42 group means embracing a culture of continuous innovation, where technology enhances the patient experience and outcomes. In maternal and reproductive care, innovation fosters not only safer pregnancies and childbirth but also greater accessibility to high-quality care, no matter the patient’s location. By utilizing cutting-edge solutions, we can improve fertility treatments, prenatal monitoring, and post-natal care, creating a healthier future for mothers and children alike.

The future of healthcare is incredibly exciting, and with each technological breakthrough, we move closer to a world where every woman’s journey through motherhood is supported by the very best in medical innovation.

You have a strong background in medical education. How do you ensure that Danat Al Emarat remains at the forefront of training and developing future healthcare professionals?

My impact extends to the development of the UAE’s future medical leaders. I have championed the establishment of residency programs in obstetrics and pediatrics, providing Emirati healthcare providers with the skills and experience necessary to excel. These programs emphasize not only technical skills but also compassionate, patient-centered approaches that reflect my values. By investing in local talent, I’m building a sustainable healthcare system that will continue to grow and thrive long after my tenure, leaving a lasting legacy in the region’s medical community. In addition, my leadership in the hospital’s Research and Development Committee has led to significant contributions to women’s healthcare research, with Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women & Children’s studies in obstetrics and gynecology recognized at global forums, including the prestigious Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) Congress, and published in leading medical journals.

We have developed links with a local university (Fatima college of health sciences) that is training future midwives, we have developed programs in which the students are able to come and train in a leading maternity hospital, shadowing and working with real midwives,

who will inspire them and set them on their career paths.

Dr. Summia, with such a busy and demanding career, how do you manage to maintain a work-life balance?

Balancing a demanding career with personal life can be challenging, but I’ve found ways to integrate both aspects meaningfully. One of the strategies I use is involving my children in my work, especially when preparing my lectures. This allows me to share my professional life with them and foster a connection between my role as a mother and a medical leader.

Reflecting on a key moment in my career, I recall the difficult decision I made to return to work early from maternity leave. This meant missing out on some special family milestones, and it was a hard choice, but it was a decision I had to make at that time.

One of my most cherished memories is having my three-year-old son join me on stage as I received recognition from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) President. It was a poignant moment that reflected the harmony between my professional achievements and the importance of my family life.

I strongly believe in empowering others by rejecting the idea that struggle is a necessary rite of passage. I advocate for flexible working arrangements and a positive work-life balance, because success does not have one definition, and it should never come at the expense of your health or family.

What aspect of your work gives you the most satisfaction, and why?

The aspect of my work that gives me the most satisfaction is the impact we have on individual patients’ lives. Receiving feedback from patients about their experiences and the impact our care has had is what truly motivates me to continue improving and delivering high-quality care. Nothing makes my day more than the casual drop by, of a staff member telling me that they love working at Danat, it reinforces the positive work environment we have built together. These moments remind me of the impact we have on people’s lives and keep me striving to reach even greater heights in everything we do.

What do you enjoy doing in your personal time?

In my personal time, I find immense joy in embracing the beauty of nature—whether it’s a peaceful walk in the woods or a moment of stillness by a quiet stream. I was lucky enough to live my life in the UK and be a member of the national trust ( a heritage and nature conservation organisation), which is blessed with areas of outstanding natural beauty and worked our way around the UK, visiting all of these areas. Having relocated to the UAE, I’m excited to be discovering the spectacular nature that it has to offer. Spending time with my husband and children is where my heart truly finds its home. Together, we cycle through life’s adventures, trying new things and exploring the world around us. Each new experience fills us with excitement for the future and gratitude for the blessings of the present. These moments of connection and discovery remind me that life is not just about the destination, but about savoring the journey together.

The hospital’s unwavering dedication to excellence, combined with Dr. Zaher’s leadership, ensures that Danat Al Emarat will remain a trusted healthcare provider, transforming lives and setting new standards for women’s and children’s healthcare for years to come. ■

The future of women’s health is smart, seamless, and surprisingly personal. Femtech is no longer just a buzzword — it’s becoming a game-changer, combining tech and empathy to create solutions women actually want. From tailored wellness journeys to data-driven insights, the industry is evolving fast.

One such pioneering company in this space is Plexāā, which is dedicated to enhancing patient care through cutting-edge medical devices. Their flagship innovation, BLOOM⁴³, aims to revolutionise the way patients prepare for breast surgery. This wearable medical device leverages the power of supraphysiological preconditioning to help reduce wound-related complications and improve recovery outcomes.

About BLOOM⁴³

BLOOM⁴³ is a simple, drug-free wearable device designed for home use. It prepares patients for breast surgery by boosting skin resilience, thereby reducing recovery times and the risk of complications. This ensures patients can proceed with additional treatments without delay, improving their overall surgical journey.

The Technology Behind BLOOM⁴³

The device is sensor-controlled and delivers precise

supraphysiological preconditioning to the skin the night before surgery. By gently warming the skin, BLOOM⁴³ increases blood flow, which enhances healing post-surgery. Clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of supraphysiological preconditioning on wound healing and BLOOM⁴³ has been developed to bring this innovation directly to patients.

The BLOOM⁴³ Companion App

In addition to the wearable device, Plexāā offers a companion app that provides personalised pre- and post-surgery plans, symptom tracking, and health reports. The app also connects patients with a supportive community and offers access to expert content, empowering them throughout their recovery journey.

With BLOOM⁴³, Plexāā is setting a new standard in breast surgery preparation, reducing the burden on healthcare systems and improving patient experiences. Their commitment to innovation and patient care makes them a standout in the Femtech space.

At the forefront of this shift is Gaele Lalahy, COO of Plexāā, who’s redefining wellness by bringing real innovation and inclusivity into the conversation. We Caught Up with Gaele Lalahy to discuss how Plexāā’s BLOOM⁴³ is redefining Post-Surgery Wellness and Empowering Women’s Health.

PLEXĀĀ’S FLAGSHIP DEVICE BLOOM⁴³ IS A GAME-CHANGER IN PREPARATION FOR BREAST SURGERY

Can you share your journey to becoming the COO of Plexāā? What inspired you to join a pioneering Femtech company focused on improving women’s health?

My career has been a journey that blends a passion for innovation with a commitment to improving women’s health and empowering those around me. I span a long international career with consumer electronics giant Panasonic in digital, ecommerce comms and marketing.

However, about five years ago, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and embark on a new path in the Femtech sector. I launched and commercialized the Balance menopause app, which became one of the largest menopause apps in the world. This experience allowed me to make a tangible impact in women’s health, and it opened my eyes to the broader connection between health and economic opportunities for women.

Throughout my career, I’ve always been an advocate for women’s empowerment, particularly in the workplace. My work in women’s health further deepened my belief that improving women’s health isn’t just a matter of individual well-being – it has the potential to reduce economic inequalities between men and women. By addressing health issues specific to women, we can create a more equitable environment where women can

thrive both in the workplace and in society.

After a successful exit at Balance, I found myself sitting in on health entrepreneurs’ pitch competitions, looking for the next visionary founder aligned with my mission. That’s when I came across Dr. Saahil Mehta, the founder of Plexāā, who had spent over 10 years conducting clinical research to demonstrate the benefits of supraphysiological preconditioning on wound healing, especially in breast cancer surgery. I was incredibly inspired by his work and his dedication to addressing critical challenges in women’s health.

Plexāā’s flagship device, BLOOM⁴³, is a gamechanger in breast surgery recovery. Could you tell us more about how the device works and what makes it unique compared to traditional methods?

It really is, 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. And 90% of these patients will NEED surgery as part of their treatment. What we don’t talk about enough is that complications such as infections or skin necrosis occur in 30% of the cases which is adding a huge burden on hospital resources and more importantly delays life saving adjuvant radio-chemo therapy treatments for patients.

This is the reason we have translated the academic research into a product which patients can safely use.

We have developed BLOOM⁴³, the world’s first non-invasive wearable medical device that empowers patients to safely precondition their skin at home, the night before surgery.

By gently warming the skin, using our specific protocol, the body releases heat shock proteins that increase blood flow to the area.

And the increased blood flow means better healing.

Our clinical results have demonstrated that by heating the skin prior to surgery we can reduce Skin necrosis by 13%, Reoperation rate by 50% , and Outpatient follow up appointments by 70% saving considerable resources for hospitals and improving patient experience.

Femtech is a rapidly growing sector, yet it still faces challenges in gaining mainstream recognition. What are some of the barriers you’ve encountered in this space, and how is Plexāā addressing them?

While Femtech is growing rapidly, one of the main challenges remains securing adequate funding, particularly for a sector that has historically been underfunded. However, there’s been a shift, with more investors recognizing the value of innovation in women’s health. At Plexāā, we’re addressing this by showcasing the clear benefits of our products, backed by strong clinical evidence.

We also work closely with our patient champions and community to ensure that everything we do is driven by patient needs and feedback. This close collaboration

helps us design solutions that truly make a difference in the lives of women.

We’re also changing the narrative around Femtech by emphasizing its potential to improve patient outcomes while reducing healthcare costs. Although funding remains a challenge, we’re optimistic about the increasing support and opportunities as the impact of Femtech becomes clearer.

How do you envision BLOOM⁴³ transforming patient outcomes for women undergoing breast surgery? Are there any real-life patient stories that have impacted you personally?

Our data shows that only 10% of patients felt prepared for their breast surgery, 69% felt isolated during their

surgery, and 58% wished they had more support in preparing for the procedure. These statistics highlight the importance of approaching surgery as a complete patient experience—before, during, and after the surgery. BLOOM⁴³ addresses this by focusing on the preconditioning phase, helping patients get “race-fit” for their surgery and giving them the best possible chance for a healthy recovery.

Through BLOOM⁴³, we empower patients to precondition their skin at home, improving blood flow and enhancing wound healing. But we don’t stop there. Alongside the Bloom43 medical device, we are also launching a free companion app that provides comprehensive support throughout the entire surgical journey. The app offers evidence-based resources written by our team of surgeons, as well as post-operative care tools including a rehabilitation program with movement exercises, mindfulness practices, and access to a supportive patient community. We’ve also added features like a symptoms checker and other functionalities based on the feedback from our patients.

Just before Christmas we have had our very first patient using BLOOM⁴³ in New York and hearing how it has positively impacted their preparation and recovery and their feeling of empowerment has been incredibly moving.

We are starting a new study in Stanford Hospital this month and as we are preparing for a full US launch in the summer, we look forward to further improve outcomes to as many patients as possible and will for sure record as many patient stories as we can to continue to improve and refine our work in line with patient needs.

What role does innovation play at Plexāā, and how do you ensure that your solutions remain patient-centric and accessible?

At Plexāā we are constantly striving to push the boundaries of what’s possible from a technological view point. However innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about ensuring that our solutions meet the real, evolving needs of patients. That’s why we are incredibly fortunate to have Carly Moosah, a breast cancer survivor and our patient champion, as part of our senior management team.

No decision on product development, features, messaging, or user experience goes forward without first consulting Carly or the broader patient community we’ve built throughout our journey. This ensures that our innovations are always patient-centric, accessible, and truly reflective of the needs and feedback from those who matter most—the patients themselves.

We’re also not afraid to think outside of traditional medical pathways. At Plexāā, we believe in disrupting where necessary to provide a better, more seamless patient experience. Whether it’s simplifying the process to

access the product simply via an app and not in hospital, or make a product that is really easy to use from the comfort of your home, we’re committed to challenging the status quo to offer patients the best possible care, experience and outcomes.

Plexāā’s technology has the potential to expand beyond breast surgery into areas like C-sections and orthopedics. Could you share more about your plans for future applications of BLOOM⁴³?

Our method of preconditioning the skin prior to surgery can be applied to any part of the body. We’re excited to hold the patent for this medical method in the US, which opens up the global wound healing market, valued at over $30B. Our platform technology allows us to address this vast opportunity across multiple medical fields.

We’ve already had the privilege of being invited to speak at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, where we’ve discussed the enormous potential for BLOOM⁴³, in C-sections. Surgeons from around the world are eager to explore ways to reduce complication rates, particularly in cases involving thin skin or for patients who face challenges in healing due

to other conditions. The response from the medical community has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited about the possibility of applying our technology to other areas such as orthopedics, and general and vascular surgery where skin preconditioning could play a key role in improving recovery outcomes.

Regulation and compliance are critical in MedTech. How has Plexāā navigated the regulatory landscape, and what lessons have you learned along the way?

Coming from a background in the less-regulated consumer electronics industry, the shift to MedTech was definitely a bit of a shock for me! However, we are fortunate to have an incredible quality and regulatory team here at Plexāā, and they’ve worked tirelessly over the past year to ensure we meet all the demanding regulatory requirements.

One of the key lessons we’ve learned is the importance of breaking down the regulatory process into bite-sized goals. The entire landscape can feel overwhelming at times, so it’s crucial to stay focused and align your regulatory and compliance strategy with your specific objectives. For us, we have set our sights firmly on the US market for 2025, and everything—regulatory, compliance, and beyond—is geared towards this goal. By maintaining this laser focus, we’ve been able to streamline our efforts and ensure we are

making measurable progress.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for Plexāā over the next five years? How do you see the company evolving and impacting the broader healthcare industry?

2025 is a particularly exciting year for us at Plexāā. We’re transitioning to scalable manufacturing with Panasonic, which will enable us to efficiently scale our operations as we prepare to enter the US market later this year. This marks a pivotal moment in our growth. Beyond this milestone, our focus will be on expanding adoption internationally and increasing the breadth of our product range across various specialties. We aim to become the standard of care for preparation to surgery worldwide. By establishing our technology as an essential part of the surgical process, we believe we can dramatically improve patient outcomes, reduce complications, and transform recovery for patients across the globe.

In the next five years, we see Plexāā evolving into a key player in the healthcare industry, influencing how surgeries are approached and setting new standards for patient care. ■

- Claudia Sheinbaum “

exico’s political landscape is undergoing a transformative shift with Claudia Sheinbaum assuming office as the nation’s first female president. Known for her deep roots in environmental science and progressive leadership, Sheinbaum brings a bold new vision for the country—one focused on tackling climate change, reforming the economy, and enhancing Mexico’s standing on the global stage. As she steps into leadership, Sheinbaum faces the challenge of navigating the complex legacy left by her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), while charting a course toward a greener, more sustainable future.

Inheriting a complex legacy

AMLO’s presidency was marked by both significant social progress and political controversy. His policies,

CLAUDIA SHEINBAUM’S PRESIDENCY FOCUSES ON SUSTAINABILITY, SOCIAL WELFARE, AND DEMOCRATIC REFORMS. HER GREEN AGENDA AIMS TO REDUCE FOSSIL FUEL RELIANCE AND LEAD GLOBAL CLIMATE ACTION. SHE FACES THE CHALLENGE OF NAVIGATING AMLO’S LEGACY WHILE DELIVERING ON HER AMBITIOUS PROMISES.

such as pension increases and cash transfers, alleviated poverty for many Mexicans, but his governance, particularly in the areas of security and human rights, drew criticism. Critics argue that AMLO’s leadership weakened democratic institutions and failed to adequately address the systemic violence and political polarization facing the country. As Sheinbaum takes office, she faces the dual challenge of continuing AMLO’s social welfare programs while confronting the deep-rooted issues of insecurity and human rights abuses.

A

new vision for Mexico

Sheinbaum’s government program is based on a set of 100 key promises aimed at creating a fairer, more sustainable Mexico. Her administration will prioritize protecting human rights, freedom of expression, and

citizens’ right to assemble. Sheinbaum’s approach focuses on reducing inequality, advancing democratic reforms, and promoting transparency. She is committed to tackling corruption, modernizing public services, and ensuring that the government is more accountable to the people.

Central to her vision are education and healthcare. Sheinbaum has pledged to guarantee free higher education, expand scholarships, and improve healthcare access for all Mexicans. Her government will also address gender-based violence, promote gender equality, and protect vulnerable populations. On the economic front, Sheinbaum aims to strengthen agricultural self-sufficiency and promote sustainable energy solutions, all while supporting critical infrastructure projects such as the Mayan Train, rural transport modernization, and

Public Concern and Priority on Climate Change in Mexico and the United States

national energy initiatives.

Economic challenges and nearshoring

A key part of Sheinbaum’s economic strategy is the emphasis on nearshoring—attracting manufacturing jobs to Mexico as global companies seek to relocate operations closer to the U.S. This trend has already benefitted the country by boosting GDP growth and per capita income, though challenges remain. To continue attracting investment, Sheinbaum will need to address issues like rule of law, competitiveness, and infrastructure. Mexico’s increased manufacturing activity requires sufficient power generation and clean water access, making these areas a priority for the new administration.

At the same time, Sheinbaum must carefully manage Mexico’s fiscal situation. With the government deficit expected to reach a record high of 5.9% of GDP in 2024, maintaining fiscal discipline while supporting higher wages, social programs, and infrastructure investment will be a balancing act. While Sheinbaum and her finance minister, Rogelio Ramirez, have pledged fiscal prudence, constitutional reforms—particularly those proposed by AMLO—could make it difficult to achieve the necessary fiscal consolidation.

The green vision

One of Sheinbaum’s most defining commitments is her

focus on environmental sustainability. Having championed green initiatives during her time as mayor of Mexico City, Sheinbaum is now set to reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and significantly increase the use of renewable energy. Her ambitious goal is for 45% of Mexico’s energy to come from renewable sources by 2030, a crucial step toward reducing the country’s carbon footprint.

Beyond energy, Sheinbaum’s green agenda includes expanding solar panel programs and promoting electric transportation to address energy inequality and improve environmental health. With 92% of Mexicans concerned about the impacts of climate change, Sheinbaum’s policies resonate with the public. Mexico is particularly vulnerable to climate change’s effects, such as extreme weather events, droughts, and food insecurity, and Sheinbaum’s leadership in global environmental forums like the G20 positions Mexico as a responsible player in international climate action.

Navigating political and economic challenges

Sheinbaum’s environmental focus is clear, but she will also have to navigate significant political and economic challenges. AMLO’s policies, particularly his state-driven energy projects and limited international engagement, have left Mexico in a tense position with global trade and security partners, including the United States. Sheinbaum must rebuild these relationships,

balancing international cooperation with her green agenda and commitment to national sovereignty.

Her government will also need to maintain economic stability amid global uncertainties. Trade relations, security cooperation, and judicial reforms are all under scrutiny, and Sheinbaum will need to steer the country through these challenges to ensure that her progressive policies do not hinder Mexico’s economic growth.

What lies ahead for Sheinbaum?

Claudia Sheinbaum’s presidency represents a unique opportunity for Mexico to embrace a sustainable future while addressing the political and social challenges of the past. With a focus on renewable energy, social welfare, and anti-corruption efforts, Sheinbaum is positioned as a transformative figure in Mexican politics. However, the road ahead is uncertain. Her ability to deliver on her ambitious promises while navigating the complexities of her predecessor’s legacy will determine whether her vision for a greener, fairer Mexico can be realized.

Sheinbaum’s commitment to global cooperation and green energy positions her as a leader capable of elevating Mexico’s role on the world stage. Yet, balancing the aspirations of a greener future with the realities of Mexico’s economic and political landscape will be a significant challenge. The coming years will reveal whether Sheinbaum can successfully navigate this complex terrain.

A turning point for Mexico

As Mexico grapples with food and water insecurity, exacerbated by the impacts of climate change, Sheinbaum’s leadership becomes all the more critical. Public support for climate action in Mexico is overwhelming—88% of Mexicans consider climate change a top priority—reinforcing the urgency of her green agenda. Her presidency marks a turning point, with the potential to redefine Mexico’s future by aligning environmental sustainability with social equity and global cooperation.

However, the political and economic uncertainty surrounding Sheinbaum’s administration is already affecting the market. Analysts predict that the recent sweeping victory by Sheinbaum and the Morena Party will heighten fears over constitutional reforms, which could hinder

fiscal consolidation and make it harder for Mexico to attract capital. This uncertainty is expected to put upward pressure on interest rates and credit spreads in the region, while the Mexican Peso and equities may face downward pressure. In the near term, the markets will closely watch Sheinbaum’s ability to manage these challenges while keeping her promises of economic and environmental transformation. ■

REEVES VS. RECESSION:

CAN SHE SAVE THE UK’S STRUGGLING ECONOMY?

Rachel Reeves’ first budget focuses on raising National Insurance, lifting tax freezes, and boosting public service investments. While growth is expected, inflation and rising taxes pose challenges. The long-term impact remains uncertain.

“The central mission of this government will be to restore economic growth. It is now our national mission and it will be for the Treasury to lead that mission.”

When Rachel Reeves took to the stage in July 2024 to deliver her first speech as Chancellor of the Exchequer, it was clear that the UK was facing its toughest economic moment in decades. With a £22bn hole in public finances, public services on the brink, and the economy at risk of falling deeper into recession, the stakes were high. In her speech, she promised growth, investment, and reform as the keys to turning the ship around. Yet, as the dust settles on her budget and the economy continues to stutter, the road ahead looks far more treacherous than Reeves and her team may have anticipated.

The weight of inherited challenges

Reeves entered office at a moment of economic crisis. The UK had narrowly avoided a severe downturn, but only just. Under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the UK had seen GDP dip by 0.3% in late 2023, pushing the country dangerously close to a full recession. The country’s economic struggles were compounded by inflation, an unemployment crisis, and a rise in mortgage rates. In short, Reeves’ inheritance was far from enviable, with the Labour Party now tasked with managing the fallout

of years of underinvestment and austerity.

Despite these challenges, Reeves came out fighting, stating that sustained economic growth was the only route to prosperity for the UK. But as her budget unfolds, the real question is whether her plans will be enough to deliver the growth she promised — or if the UK is heading straight into a recession.

The ambitious but risky budget

Reeves’ budget was presented as a strategic plan to address the UK’s economic woes. In it, she focused on three major fiscal principles: stability, investment, and reform. She made it clear that the UK’s public finances were in desperate need of attention, and tax hikes would be necessary to bring stability. The budget also placed a strong emphasis on investment in public services and infrastructure to jumpstart economic recovery. But

whether these measures will deliver growth or simply stifle the economy further remains to be seen.

Key points from Rachel Reeves’ budget

Rachel Reeves’ budget introduced a series of significant measures designed to tackle the UK’s ongoing economic challenges. Employer National Insurance contributions will rise by 1.2p to 15p starting in April 2024, with the earnings threshold at which payments begin reduced, generating an expected £25bn annually by 2030. Corporation tax will be capped at 25p for the rest of this parliament. Additionally, the freeze on income tax and National Insurance thresholds will end in 2028, bringing more people into the tax net as their wages increase. Public service spending will see substantial boosts, with the NHS’s day-to-day budget rising by £22.6bn and an additional £3.1bn for capital investment. Investment in schools will increase by £6.7bn, a 19%

real-terms rise.

On the wealth tax front, offshore trusts used by nondoms will be subject to inheritance tax, raising £2.5bn annually, and taxes on carried interest paid to fund managers will rise from 28p to 32p, bringing in an additional £100m. Changes to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) include increases in the lower and higher rates, from 10p to 18p and 20p to 24p respectively. A new 20p rate will apply to Aim-listed shares, and pensions will now be taxed upon inheritance. The economy is expected to expand by 1.1% in 2024, with inflation forecast at 2.5%. However, real disposable income is projected to fall by 1.25% in 2029 due to rising taxes. The tax burden as a share of GDP will increase to 38.3% by 2027-28, with borrowing forecast at £127bn in 2024-25. Public debt will be redefined to

allow for extra borrowing, and £100bn will be invested in capital spending over the next five years.

A tough road ahead

Despite the ambitious proposals, the road to recovery may not be so straightforward. The UK is still in the thick of a cost-of-living crisis, and tax rises on businesses, while necessary to balance the books, could dampen investment. Reeves’ decision to raise National Insurance contributions, in particular, risks discouraging businesses from hiring or expanding, potentially leading to fewer jobs and a longer economic slump.

Additionally, the economic situation is still precarious. The Office for National Statistics reported that the UK

economy failed to grow in the third quarter of 2023, and there’s a real risk of the country sliding further into recession. Growth projections for 2026 and beyond have been revised downward, leaving the UK on track for a period of stagnation rather than the thriving economy Reeves had promised.

The reality of negative messaging

What makes things worse is the negative messaging that has come from both Reeves and Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the lead-up to the budget. The constant focus on the economic challenges, while important, has not inspired confidence in the business community. Instead of laying out a clear and hopeful path for growth, the narrative has been one of austerity and difficult choices.

This could trigger a self-fulfilling prophecy. Businesses are hesitant to invest, fearing future tax hikes, while demand for goods and services could shrink as people feel the pinch. If the government cannot shift this narrative and show a clear path to recovery, the economic gloom could deepen.

Can Reeves turn things around?

Rachel Reeves has four years to steer the UK economy back on course, and her plans are certainly bold. But the big question is: can she balance the need for reform without choking off growth in the process? The real test will be whether she can encourage investment and create jobs while tackling the country’s financial challenges.

It’s too early to judge whether her budget will spark the economic recovery she’s promised. What’s clear, however, is that the coming years will be crucial. Reeves and her team face the tough job of making progress without stifling the economy further. If she can strike the right balance between investment, tax changes, and growth, the UK could still have a shot at a brighter future.

But for now, the outlook remains uncertain. With so many obstacles ahead, Reeves will need all the political support and strategic vision she can gather to avoid making things worse and ensure the UK’s economic recovery stays on track. ■

ENGINEERING EQUALITY:

THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN SHAPING EPC’S OIL AND GAS LANDSCAPE

The journey of oil and gas from beneath the earth to the end-user is no simple task. It involves a labyrinth of processes, beginning with an exploration, followed by extraction, transportation, refining, and, ultimately, distribution to markets around the world. Each of these stages demands a considerable investment in infrastructure, which is crucial to ensuring the continued energy supply. However, the scale and complexity of such projects often call for specialised expertise. This is where Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firms come in. EPC companies, like KEC International, provide the knowledge and resources to build the infrastructure required for the oil and gas industry, ensuring projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to the highest standards.

The role of EPC in the Oil and Gas industry

Oil and gas projects are not only large but also highly intricate, involving significant technical and logistical

challenges. The role of EPC firms in this sector is essential in managing the complexity of these projects, providing a single, responsible source for the entire process, from engineering design to procurement of materials, construction, and project completion, offering a comprehensive service that covers all aspects of project execution. This approach means that instead of the oil and gas company diverting substantial time and resources to oversee a multi-year construction project, it can remain focused on its core operations like extraction, processing, refining, and storage.

Why

EPC

matters in the Oil and Gas sector

Risk reduction and focus on core activities

One of the primary advantages of hiring an EPC firm is the transfer of risk from the oil and gas company to the contractor. By outsourcing the construction of large infrastructure projects, the company can focus on its core operations, reducing the strain on internal resources.

Furthermore, the risk associated with performance, budgets, and schedules is transferred to the contractor, ensuring that the project is completed within the set parameters.

Industry expertise and efficiency

EPC contractors bring a wealth of industry expertise, allowing them to complete projects more quickly and with better cost control than the oil and gas companies could manage on their own. With access to specialised engineering, skilled tradespeople, and advanced technology, EPC contractors can handle the complex demands of large-scale construction projects. This expertise not only accelerates project timelines but also ensures high-quality outcomes.

Single point of responsibility

One of the most important benefits of working with EPC firms is that they act as a single point of responsibility. Instead of managing multiple contracts and vendors,

the oil and gas company only needs to deal with one contractor. This simplifies communication, reduces administrative overhead, and ensures that any issues that arise are dealt with efficiently by the designated contractor.

The challenges and opportunities in EPC

The oil and gas sector is subject to fluctuating commodity prices, evolving regulatory frameworks, and continuous technological advancements. EPC firms must navigate these challenges while also looking for ways to improve efficiency, sustainability, and safety in their projects. As the industry becomes more digitally driven, innovations such as digital twins and AI-powered analytics are beginning to reshape the way projects are executed. These technologies allow for more adaptable, responsive, and cost-effective solutions, which are essential in a rapidly changing global market.

Another important trend in the sector is the increasing focus on sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. With the world moving toward cleaner energy sources, EPC companies are diversifying their portfolios to include projects related to renewable energy and low-carbon technologies. Initiatives like hydrogen production and carbon capture are gaining momentum, and EPC firms are now key players in this shift towards greener energy solutions.

Women’s presence in EPC companies in the Oil and Gas sector

The oil and gas sector, particularly within EPC, has long been male-dominated. However, women leaders are increasingly carving out important roles within this industry, overcoming traditional barriers and inspiring others to follow. Women like Wadha Ahmad Al-Khateeb, CEO of Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC), are helping guide critical projects and shaping the future of energy in the region. KIPIC, a key player in Kuwait’s refining and petrochemical sectors, is currently working on a $10 billion petrochemicals complex—an ambitious project set to boost Kuwait’s production capacity.

Al-Khateeb’s leadership is a testament to the vital role

that women can play in managing complex projects, particularly when faced with challenges such as fluctuating oil prices, evolving regulations, and safety concerns. Her background in chemical engineering and her previous role at Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) have given her the expertise to navigate these complexities and lead significant projects that shape the country’s energy future.

One of the key advantages of working with EPC firms is the expertise and efficiency they bring to the table. Women leaders in EPC firms, like Victoria Elisa Vásquez García of Sigdo Koppers SA, have proven their ability to oversee diverse projects with exceptional levels of coordination, quality, and safety. Sigdo Koppers, a prominent Chilean group, is involved in various sectors, including industrial construction, transport, and logistics. The company’s ability to execute projects efficiently is largely attributed to its strong leadership and commitment to sustainable development—a priority in today’s rapidly changing energy landscape.

Vásquez García’s leadership demonstrates how women in EPC are driving projects that improve infrastructure and build the foundation for sustainable energy. The company’s technical expertise and planning strategies enable it to manage complex projects from start to finish,

providing integrated services for industries worldwide. As the world shifts towards renewable energy, women in EPC leadership are pushing forward with innovations that incorporate sustainability into the design, construction, and operation of energy infrastructure. Companies like AECOM, with leaders like Ms. Poloni, are prioritising sustainability, green technologies, and energy efficiency. AECOM’s diverse portfolio spans cities, transportation, water systems, and the environment, with a focus on building long-term, sustainable projects. Ms. Poloni’s leadership has been instrumental in guiding AECOM’s operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, driving the company’s commitment to delivering projects that benefit both communities and the environment. AECOM’s EPC expertise enables the company to integrate sustainable design and construction practices, positioning it as a leader in the development of energy-efficient infrastructure projects.

Similarly, Luana Duffé, Executive Vice President of New Energy at TechnipFMC, is driving the company’s diversification beyond traditional oil and gas into emerging sectors such as hydrogen and offshore renewables. Under her leadership, TechnipFMC is leveraging its vast experience in energy to support the energy transition and reduce the carbon intensity of its operations. The company’s focus on carbon removal technologies and renewable

energy systems showcases how women in leadership are vital in shaping the future of both traditional and new energy sectors.

EPC firms play a crucial and dynamic role in the oil and gas industry, providing the necessary infrastructure to support the sector’s ongoing evolution. From reducing risks and ensuring efficient project delivery to driving innovations in sustainability and renewable energy, these companies are at the heart of global energy production. As the demand for cleaner, more efficient energy grows, EPC firms will continue to play an integral part in shaping the future of the energy landscape. Their adaptability and expertise will remain vital in meeting the challenges of tomorrow’s energy needs, ensuring that oil and gas continue to power industries, homes, and transportation across the globe. ■

Agility has been a key differentiator for us, allowing us to stay ahead of changing market dynamics. Personally, I’ve succeeded at Nahdi by being fast, adaptable, and using innovative approaches to achieve impactful results efficiently.

The future of marketing will continue to leverage data, AI, and immersive technologies like augmented reality, but it will always circle back to the human connection. At the end of the day, people want to do business with people. Our pharmacists are a prime example of this— they are not just experts but also trusted advisors who embody the human touch that sets Nahdi apart. This human-centric approach will remain at the heart of our marketing strategies.

What message do you hope young mothers take away from Nahdi’s support and guidance?

We want young mothers to know that Nahdi is here to support them every step of the way, from pregnancy to their child’s adulthood. Our focus on the first 1,000 days of a baby’s life highlights the critical role mothers play in their child’s well-being, and we are committed to being

Our goal is to ensure that mothers feel seen, supported, and empowered, offering them the tools and community they need to navigate motherhood with confidence and ease.

What advice would you give to young professionals looking to follow a similar path in leadership?

Leadership is a journey of continuous learning and growth. Embrace every challenge as an opportunity to improve, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. As our CEO Yasser Joharji once told me, “You are the CEO of your area—take decisions and don’t fear mistakes. The more mistakes you make, the more you’ll learn and grow.” Mistakes are not failures; they are steppingstones toward progress and success.

Ask questions, seek feedback, and remain curious about new possibilities. Cultivate empathy and adaptability, as these are key to building strong teams and creating impactful strategies. Always stay connected to your purpose and the value you aim to bring to others. Remember, all work works when approached with dedication, resilience, and a willingness to learn. Empower yourself to empower others, and leadership will naturally follow. By staying open to growth and staying true to your vision, you’ll create a meaningful and rewarding path in leadership.

Looking back on your journey at Nahdi, is there a particular moment or campaign that stands out as especially meaningful to you on a personal level?

One of the most meaningful aspects of my journey at Nahdi has been our unwavering commitment to placing women at the center of everything we do. Over the years, we have continuously worked to empower women in all their roles—as individuals, mothers, daughters, and caregivers—through tailored wellness, beauty, and selfcare solutions.

A standout initiative for me was our multidimensional female-focused campaigns, which recognized the unique and diverse needs of women and provided holistic support to help them thrive. These campaigns was not just

about products; it was about empowering women to care for themselves while continuing to care for others. 10 REASONS WHY BUSINESSES SHOULD MIGRATE TO THE CLOUD

Many businesses, particularly smaller ones, are finding that adopting cloud-based solutions is far more practical than maintaining everything on-premise. Cloud services offer a host of advantages, ranging from cost reduction to better security and faster innovation. Renowned companies such as Netflix, Capital One, Hearst, Unilever, Airbnb, Condé Nast, and Johnson & Johnson have all successfully transitioned to the cloud. Here are the key reasons why businesses of all sizes should consider making the switch.

Reduce IT expenses

A significant reason for moving to the cloud is to reduce costs. Traditionally, companies have had to make hefty upfront investments in hardware and infrastructure. With cloud computing, businesses can scale their resources up or down depending on demand. This flexibility means you only pay for what you use, which makes budgeting much more manageable. Cloud-based systems such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) are typically cheaper to implement since there’s no need for expensive hardware. Many cloud services also operate on a subscription basis, making them more affordable for smaller businesses that may have limited budgets.

Enhance business flexibility

In today’s fast-paced business environment, flexibility is key. Cloud services enable businesses to quickly adjust to market demands without having to wait for lengthy hardware or software updates. Cloud systems are available on-demand, meaning they can be accessed instantly and easily scaled as required. This gives businesses the ability to respond quickly to changes, allowing them to stay agile and competitive in a dynamic marketplace.

Strengthen security

The threat of cybercrime is growing, and the cost of a data breach can be devastating. A 2021 report found that a data breach costs businesses an average of £4.24 million. Cloud providers generally offer better security measures than most businesses can afford to implement in-house. Leading cloud companies invest heavily in encryption, security protocols, and compliance with industry standards to protect sensitive data. By switching to the cloud, businesses can enhance their security

posture and reduce the risks associated with cyberattacks.

Avoid End-of-Life problems

On-premise systems often come with the concern of hardware and software eventually reaching the end of their life cycle. This leads to costly and time-consuming upgrades or replacements. Cloud services eliminate this worry because the service provider manages system upgrades and maintenance automatically. Businesses no longer need to worry about scheduling expensive upgrades, as the cloud provider takes care of it. Additionally, cloud services avoid the long-term contracts and licensing agreements common with on-premise systems, making it easier to scale and adapt to changing needs.

Boost efficiency

Migrating to the cloud can help businesses save both time and resources by reducing the effort required to maintain internal IT systems. On-premise systems often require significant IT support to keep them functioning smoothly. In contrast, cloud providers handle the majority of technical work, such as server maintenance and security updates. This allows in-house IT teams to focus on strategic projects rather than spending valuable time on routine maintenance tasks.

Simplified system maintenance

When you move to the cloud, your ERP software and infrastructure are managed by the service provider. This means your team doesn’t need to worry about keeping the system up to date or troubleshooting issues. The cloud provider ensures that everything runs smoothly and is compliant with relevant regulations. Many cloud services also offer 24/7 support, so any issues can be addressed promptly and efficiently, minimising downtime and ensuring uninterrupted operations.

Access to advanced technologies

Cloud systems make it much easier for businesses to leverage cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and big data analytics. These tools are often integrated into cloud platforms, enabling companies to utilise advanced capabilities without needing to make large investments in infrastructure. With these technologies, businesses can make

better-informed decisions, uncover valuable insights, and enhance operational efficiency.

Faster setup and deployment

Cloud-based systems are typically much quicker to set up than traditional on-premise solutions. Installing on-premise ERP systems can take months, whereas cloud-based systems can be up and running within just a few weeks. This means less downtime and a faster transition to a fully operational system. Additionally, businesses can continue focusing on their core activities while the cloud provider handles the technical setup and deployment.

Easy customisation

Customising on-premise systems to fit a business’s specific needs can be both expensive and time-consuming, especially when it requires upgrading hardware and software. Cloud-based ERP systems are generally more affordable and flexible to customise. The cloud provider typically handles most of the customisation, meaning there are no extra costs for additional hardware or specialised IT expertise. This makes it easier to tailor the system to your needs without breaking the bank.

Better team collaboration

One of the standout advantages of cloud-based solutions is the ability to collaborate in real time, regardless of where your team members are located. Cloud systems allow employees to work together on documents and projects simultaneously, reducing the need for multiple versions of files or lengthy email chains. Changes are saved automatically, and you can see who made them and when. This improves project management and ensures that everyone is always working with the latest version of data, promoting greater efficiency and collaboration.

Companies that have successfully migrated to the Cloud

Spotify

Spotify, the popular music streaming service, migrated to Google Cloud in 2016. The company found its in-house data centres increasingly difficult to manage and wanted to focus on innovation rather than ongoing maintenance. The company also launched the Dexda AI service, which enhances hybrid observability. Other developments included the expansion of integrations, insights, and workflows within their LM Envision Platform, helping businesses gain more visibility and control over their cloud infrastructure. These companies are leading the way in cloud technology, offering cutting-edge solutions to improve cloud security, infrastructure, and operational efficiency. Their innovations are helping businesses better manage and scale their cloud environments, ensuring they stay competitive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Why the cloud is essential for your business

Migrating to the cloud offers a wide range of benefits, from cost savings to improved security, enhanced efficiency, and better collaboration. Whether you are a small business or a large enterprise, adopting cloudbased solutions can streamline your operations, increase productivity, and future-proof your business. As cloud technology continues to evolve, the case for making the switch has never been stronger.

By moving to the cloud, businesses can reduce costs, improve security, and adapt more quickly to a constantly changing world. It frees your team from the challenges of maintaining outdated systems, provides access to the latest technologies, and facilitates collaboration regardless of location. The success stories of companies like Spotify and Betabrand demonstrate the tangible benefits of cloud migration. To stay competitive, efficient, and ready for the future, now is the perfect time to embrace the cloud. ■

EMPATHETIC LEADERSHIP AND THE FUTURE OF HR A TALK WITH PIYANUCH LIMAPORNVANITCH

Bitkub Group is the largest blockchain technology and digital asset company in Thailand.

Driven by their passion for the motto “Believe & Beyond,” the company strives to build a digital economic infrastructure that bridges the gap between the traditional world and the digital realm. Their goal is to create a safe and confident environment for people to transition between these worlds, not only in Thailand but also on a global scale.

Piyanuch Limapornvanitch, the Group Chief People Officer at Bitkub, brings over two decades of experience in leading transformative HR strategies across various

sectors, including technology, retail, and fashion. In this insightful interview, Piyanuch shares her leadership philosophy, her journey at Bitkub, and her views on the challenges and trends shaping the future of HR. She also offers valuable advice to aspiring HR professionals, particularly women, and discusses how she stays motivated as a leader.

In an interview with Women’s Tabloid, Piyanuch Limapornvanitch shares her leadership journey, insights on the evolving role of HR in the digital age, and advice for women aiming to make a mark in the profession.

What is your core philosophy when it comes to people management and leadership?

We need to treat people like people. They shouldn’t be treated as transactions or just as units of labor. When you empathize with them and truly understand their needs, you create meaningful impact and help them find purpose in their work.

This philosophy aligns with empathetic leadership, which is central to my approach. Empathetic leadership means putting yourself in others’ shoes, understanding their perspectives, and responding with compassion and support. By doing so, we build stronger, more trusting relationships with our teams. This creates a culture where people feel valued and heard—leading to greater engagement, innovation, and long-term success for both individuals and the organization.

How has your role evolved since joining Bitkub? Can you share some of the key initiatives you have led so far?

When I joined Bitkub, the company was at a different stage of development. We were transitioning into corporatization, focusing on enhancing processes and strengthening both organizational culture and structure.

One key initiative I have led is infusing the leadership DNA into the organization, establishing a new set of competencies required for Bitkub’s growth. This includes focusing on our company culture and core values, ensuring they align with our evolving business needs.

Additionally, we’ve been focused on strengthening our teams’ capabilities to remain competitive in a fast-changing industry. To maintain our leadership position in the digital asset space, we have worked to uplift organizational capabilities across critical teams, including innovation & technology, operations, and digital marketing.

We also strengthened Bitkub University, an internal platform that offers courses developed by our teams to promote continuous learning and development. Think of it as a “growth buffet” for employees. After all, when you feed your people knowledge, they’re much better equipped to tackle challenges and stay ahead of the game.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges HR leaders face today, and how can they be addressed?

One of the biggest challenges HR leaders face today is managing the shifting career perspectives across multiple generations in the workforce. With Gen Z entering the workforce in increasing numbers, we see a new approach to career paths, company structures, and employee engagement.

A key question that arises is: Should we redesign career paths to meet the needs of this generation? Do we maintain rigid career structures, or do we offer more flexible options? Is it possible for employees to pursue dual careers, working with us while also exploring opportunities elsewhere?

As someone who believes in people-first strategies, these questions are particularly important to me. It’s critical that we understand how to best support employees

while aligning with their evolving expectations. At the same time, we need to balance these needs with those of the organization, ensuring we create an environment that attracts and retains talent in an increasingly competitive landscape.

How do you approach creating a workplace culture that promotes both innovation and employee well-being?

Recently, we established the Culture Council, a group of employees from various career levels and diverse backgrounds. The Culture Council plays a key role in shaping Bitkub’s culture. Because they represent a variety of perspectives, they have a deep understanding of the needs of our people from different functions and roles.

In 2025, the key focus of the Culture Council will be:

• Promoting employee well-being

• Enhancing workplace culture

• Creating an innovative, motivating office environment to support employees

Additionally, we launched our own Bitkuber’s Voice Survey, an engagement survey that collects feedback and suggestions from our employees. This helps us identify key areas for improvement and refine our strategies to address any issues, ensuring we continue to foster a supportive and dynamic workplace. If an employee sneezes, we want to know—just to make sure we’re doing things right. (Just kidding! But feedback is always valuable.)

With your experience across multiple industries, what trends do you see shaping the future of HR?

One of the most prominent trends shaping the future of HR is the rapid growth of industries in a fast-paced environment. As industries evolve quickly, there are increasingly aggressive demands from business stakeholders. At the same time, we face a shortage of talent and a noticeable decline in employee engagement.

This trend is significantly impacting HR practices. In response, I believe it’s essential to revisit the HR operating model—how we operate, what we prioritize, and what we de-prioritize. HR leaders must double down on strategies that drive growth, enhance talent engagement, and improve workforce capabilities. Think of HR like a GPS—it’s constantly recalculating to find the best route. We need to ensure we’re on the right path to help both people and the organization succeed.

What advice would you give to aspiring HR professionals, especially women looking to step into leadership roles?

My advice is simple: Have courage, and believe in what you are doing! Trust your abilities and stay true to your values.

It’s important to be open-minded and adaptable, but also to stand firm on your principles when necessary. As an HR professional, you’ll interact with a variety of people—some will come to you for advice, others will bring complaints, and some may escalate issues to you. It’s critical to prioritize your own well-being. If you’re not physically or mentally healthy, you won’t be able to effectively support others.

As you transition into a leadership role, I recommend establishing a personal support system. This has been invaluable to me over the years. I’ve made a list of what truly matters to me, both personally and professionally, and have found ways to stay motivated and maintain a healthy balance. A fun fact: one of my support systems is a professional laundry service I’ve used for 10 years! I love the smell of fresh clothes, and it helps me enjoy a worry-free workweek. And hey, if your laundry can make you smile, you’re doing something right!

Lastly, don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Leverage the skills and expertise of others—you’ll be amazed at the superpower that comes from collaboration.

How do you personally stay motivated and continue to grow as a leader?

As a leader, my motivation comes from seeing my team grow stronger, employees feeling happier, and the workplace improving. I’m even more motivated when I know that the best practices we’ve implemented are being

shared and scaled across the organization, creating a broader impact.

When the people around you grow, it lifts you in multiple ways—personally, professionally, and emotionally. The success and growth of others provide the momentum I need to keep pushing forward and continue evolving as a leader. It’s like a team effort—when everyone’s a winner, you’re a winner, too!

Piyanuch Limapornvanitch’s approach to leadership and people management highlights the importance of empathy, flexibility, and continuous growth in today’s fast-paced world. Her emphasis on understanding the evolving needs of employees, fostering a supportive workplace culture, and adapting to industry changes offers invaluable insights for HR professionals. As she continues to drive change at Bitkub, Piyanuch’s dedication to creating a people-centric environment is not only shaping the company’s future but also paving the way for the next generation of leaders in HR. Her advice serves as a guiding light for those looking to make a meaningful impact in the field, encouraging them to trust their abilities, maintain balance, and collaborate for success. ■

Across the globe, women-led businesses play a crucial role in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and sparking innovation. Yet, a significant barrier stands in their way – lack of access to finance. This problem is not confined to one country or region; it’s a global issue that holds back female entrepreneurs from reaching their full potential.

In the UK, businesses led by women contribute substantially to the economy. However, many face hurdles when it comes to securing funding to grow their ventures. Research commissioned by HSBC revealed that nearly half of female business leaders in the UK have plans to expand their businesses, but one in ten cited access to finance as their biggest challenge. The same research found that a fifth of surveyed businesses had delayed or scrapped plans due to a lack of funding.

The gender finance gap is a real issue that impacts the growth potential of women entrepreneurs. A report by the British Business Bank found that for every £100 of equity funding in the UK, less than £2 goes to women-founded businesses. This disparity underscores the systemic challenges women face in securing finance.

The root of the problem lies in both perception and process. Outdated stereotypes paint women entrepreneurs as risk-averse or less likely to scale, leading to reduced confidence from investors and lenders. This perception can deter investors from backing female-led

ARE WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS BEING HELD BACK BY A LACK OF FUNDING?

ventures. To address this, HSBC UK launched the £250 million Women’s Business Growth Initiative, aimed at unlocking opportunities for women-led businesses in the UK. The initiative offers financial support, access to international markets, and additional business resources to help women entrepreneurs grow their ventures.

Amid the stark funding disparities, entrepreneurs like Debbie Wosskow, co-founder of AllBright, have proven that women-led ventures can secure substantial investments when supported by the right networks.

But the UK isn’t alone in facing this issue. In India, women entrepreneurs encounter similar challenges. Despite several financial institutions implementing measures to enhance access to finance for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), women-owned MSMEs often remain overlooked. According to a study by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), financial institutions in India show a lack of interest in women-led businesses, primarily due to entrenched societal biases.

One of the key reasons for this lack of interest is the perception that women-owned enterprises are highrisk. Around 97.5% of women-owned MSMEs in India operate in the informal sector as micro-enterprises, making them appear less attractive to traditional lenders. Additionally, cultural factors play a significant role. In patriarchal societies like India, women often lack ownership of immovable property, which limits their ability to

provide collateral for loans. This gender-asset gap creates a cycle of financial exclusion for women entrepreneurs.

Banks in India have been slow to develop tailored products for women-led businesses. Only a handful of public sector banks, such as Canara Bank, SBI, and Punjab National Bank, offer specific products designed for women entrepreneurs. Private sector banks and non-banking financial institutions have largely ignored this market segment, missing out on a potential growth opportunity.

Bridging the $1.7 Trillion Gap

Globally, the financing gap for women entrepreneurs is estimated to be $1.7 trillion. Bridging this gap requires a shift in how financial institutions view and serve women-owned businesses. Financial institutions must recognise the untapped potential of women entrepreneurs and develop products and services that cater to their unique needs.

One approach is to simplify loan processes and make them more accessible to women entrepreneurs. Many banks require male family members to co-sign loan applications, reinforcing outdated gender norms. Removing these requirements and accepting women’s signatures for loan applications is a crucial step towards financial inclusion.

Another solution is to explore alternative forms of collateral, such as business assets or post-dated cheques, rather than relying solely on property ownership. Financial institutions should also consider partnerships with non-governmental organisations, microfinance institutions, and self-help groups to reach women entrepreneurs more effectively. These organisations often have a better understanding of local markets and can help reduce transaction costs and manage risks.

Technology can also play a key role in improving access to finance. Online banking, mobile banking, and branchless banking models can help women entrepreneurs overcome logistical barriers. Digital financial services can simplify the loan application process and reduce the need for physical visits to bank branches, making it easier for women to access funding.

The gender finance gap isn’t just about loans and credit. It extends to investment and wealth creation. Women are underrepresented as investors, both in terms of investing

their own money and as decision-makers within financial institutions. According to the OECD, women receive 26% less income from pensions than men, highlighting the long-term impact of financial exclusion.

Meanwhile, in the Asia-Pacific region, less than 6% of startups have women founders, according to Google. The tech company announced last year it was launching a fund for women-founded artificial intelligence startups in India, Japan, and Korea. This initiative aims to address the stark underrepresentation of women in the tech sector, which remains one of the most challenging industries for female entrepreneurs.

Research suggests that women tend to be more cautious investors, which can result in higher returns. Yet, financial institutions have been slow to recognise the potential of women as investors. The global financial services industry could unlock an estimated $700 billion by better serving women as investors. Encouraging more women to participate in financial markets, both as investors and as employees in financial institutions, can drive societal progress and economic empowerment.

The lack of access to finance for women entrepreneurs is a multifaceted issue that requires a comprehensive approach. Financial institutions need to address both the practical barriers, such as loan processes and collateral requirements, and the cultural biases that hinder women’s access to finance.

Closing the gender finance gap isn’t just about fairness; it’s about unlocking economic potential. Studies show that if women started and scaled businesses at the same rate as men, it could add up to £250 billion to the UK economy alone. The benefits extend far beyond individual businesses – they contribute to stronger communities, more resilient economies, and a more inclusive financial system.

As Falguni Nayar aptly demonstrated with Nykaa, the key to overcoming funding challenges is a combination of grit, strategic thinking, and supportive ecosystems. Her journey exemplifies how closing the gender finance gap can unlock immense potential for women entrepreneurs globally. ■

Did you know that nearly half of all gamers worldwide are women, yet only 16% of gaming executives are female? How many of us have heard the name ‘Carol Shaw’? Yes, probably if you are familiar with flying your jet fighter down the ‘River of No Return’ to blow up enemy tankers, jet fighters, helicopters or bridges.

Shaw was a pioneer in the gaming industry, programming the classic River Raid game that was published by Activision in 1982. The game went on to sell more than 1 million cartridges.

Gaming was initially considered more of a male leisure activity but recent statistics show otherwise. According to the Newzoo Global Gamer Study of 2023, women comprise 45% of video game players. As of 2020, 47% of the world’s total gamers, and 48% of mobile gamers are women. In Southeast Asia, 53% of the gamer population is female with the Philippines leading the way at 63%. The proportion of women gamers in Asia is growing by 11% annually, almost double the rate of men.

Who are the folks behind these games that have

CELEBRATING WOMEN LEADERS IN GAMING GAME CHANGERS:

captivated the imagination of the masses and got them addicted to the small screens? What drives them to create the games that captivate millions?

Many would have heard phrases like ‘Arts and Culture’ or ‘Arts and Science’ but what about Arts and Gaming? Where are the connecting dots? Amy Hennig could probably provide us with some insights. She came from an arts background from the University of California, Berkeley. She entered the gaming world as a freelancer with Atari, working as an artist on a game called Electrocoop. With Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Hennig took more leadership, serving as producer, writer, and designer at Crystal Dynamics. Hennig joined Naughty Dog in 2003 and was responsible for crafting Nathan Drake as a resourceful character with human qualities rather than a tough superhero. Hennig became director of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. These two were critically and financially successful, with Drake’s Deception selling over 6.6 million copies. As the gaming industry flourished in the US, Canada emerged as another powerhouse.

Assassin’s Creed Jade coincidentally has the name of its producer, Jade Raymond. Being a Canadian, she

joined Ubisoft Montreal in 2004, where she led the creation of the seminal Assassin’s Creed game, which transformed the gaming industry with its engaging historical storytelling and gameplay. She started Motive Studios in Montreal and partnered with Amy Hennig, a well-known games designer and writer, to produce Star Wars games. Jade won multiple awards including the Develop Vanguard Award (2018) and the Pioneer Award from the Fun & Serious Game Festival (2018). From Montreal, where Jade Raymond reshaped the gaming landscape, we now turn to Paris.

This is a peculiar love story, an affair between a girl and her board games. Muriel Tramis’ passion for strategy games like Chess and Monopoly inspired her transition from player to creator. She started creating simple games like crossword puzzles, and more complex things like murder mystery parties for her friends. Muriel Tramis’ first game, Méwilo, invited players to explore the island’s history through puzzles and immersive storytelling. In 1988, Muriel released her second game, Freedom, a game about slaves fighting their masters. The company sold over a million copies of the game. In 2018, Muriel was bestowed the title of Knight in the Legion of Honor (Légion donner) in France. Muriel Tramis is the first black female game designer in the world.

While the Western gaming industry saw early pioneers like Carol Shaw, Asia has been making strides with leaders like Riris Marpaung.

Riris and her women-led team in Indonesia developed the groundbreaking game, ‘My Lovely Wife’ that revolves around a man’s grief after the death of his beloved wife. She started Gambreng Games Studio in 2013. The company continues to create a series of “My Lovely” games. Riris was appointed as one of the Advisory Board members for Asosiasi Game Indonesia (AGI) or Indonesia Game Association in 2020. Apart from this, she has also been acting as a mentor for a couple of incubator programs that help young studios make games since 2021. During the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021), games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons became a global phenomenon.

In times of adversity, you need friends and when you can’t reach friends, you need games. One game that came as a saviour was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, launched on Nintendo Switch on 20 March 2020. The

game’s unexpected popularity caused Nintendo Switch sales to zoom. New Horizons had sold 44.79 million units by December 2023, nearly 350% more than any other game in the Animal Crossing series, which has been running since 2001. The game was directed by Aya Kyogoku who is the manager of the Nintendo EPD Production Group No. 5. Kyogoku started working in the game industry in 2000 with Atlus and continued working there until September 2003, when she was hired by Nintendo. She began as a scriptwriter on two The Legend of Zelda titles: Four Swords Adventures and Twilight Princess, work for which she won a Game Developers Choice Award. Aya Kyogoku is a trailblazer for women in the video game industry, particularly in leadership roles. Her success has inspired a new generation of female game developers and designers.

Despite their significant presence, women’s representation within the gaming industry’s workforce remains disproportionately low. Women account for approximately 30% of gaming industry professionals and hold a mere 16% of executive positions at the top fourteen global gaming companies. This underrepresentation extends to game development roles, where creative decisions are predominantly made by men, potentially leading to content that lacks diverse perspectives.

Challenges Faced by Women in Gaming

Women in gaming encounter several challenges, including:

• Online Harassment: Female gamers often face harassment, sexism, and misogyny in online gaming environments, which can discourage participation and affect mental well-being. A 2023 survey revealed that 77% of women gamers have experienced gender-based discrimination while gaming.

• Gender Stereotypes: Persistent stereotypes question women’s gaming skills and commitment, leading to a lack of recognition and respect within gaming communities.

• Workplace Discrimination: Within the industry, women may experience discrimination, unequal pay, and limited opportunities for advancement, contributing to a gender gap in leadership positions. As of 2021, women comprised only 30% of game developers worldwide, indicating a persistent gender gap in the industry.

Progress and Initiatives

Despite these challenges, significant progress is being made:

• Advocacy Groups: Organizations like Women in Games and Women in Games International work to increase female representation and foster inclusive environments through mentorship, networking, and advocacy.

• Inclusive Game Design: Developers increasingly create games with diverse characters and storylines, providing more inclusive experiences that resonate with a broader audience.

• Esports Participation: Women are making notable strides in esports, breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes in competitive gaming arenas

The Path Forward

Achieving gender equality in gaming requires concerted efforts from all industry stakeholders:

• Promoting Diversity: Companies should implement policies that encourage diversity in hiring, ensuring women have equal opportunities in all roles, including leadership positions.

• Addressing Harassment: Developing and enforcing strict anti-harassment policies can create safer online and workplace environments for women.

• Supporting Women Gamers: Providing platforms and communities where women can share experiences and support each other fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment.

The increasing participation of women in gaming enriches the industry with diverse perspectives and talents. By addressing existing issues and promoting inclusivity, the gaming world can continue to evolve into a more equitable and dynamic space for everyone. ■
