Holistic and Integrative Medicine

Hello, all!

What a great start for a beautiful spring. When my husband and I were out doing errands yesterday, the temperature was a balmy 36 degrees…brrrr! We saw groups of kids playing football, going for walks, and just enjoying the great outdoors. The interesting part? Many of them were wearing shorts! I guess we start them young when it comes to adapting to Nebraska weather. The week prior had temps in negative territory. I guess it’s all relative.

Manny has told me about growing up in Los Angeles, where the temperatures rarely get below freezing. I’m guessing his family and friends think he is NUTS for living in Nebraska with such extreme cold…especially when he sends his brother pictures of himself ice fishing!

We are now heading into severe storm and tornado season. I am hoping we can avoid some (or all) of the crazy weather. I know that many of you experienced some very challenging weather situations last year. One of the positives that came out of it was how neighbors all came together to help one another. That’s one of the many reasons Manny and I love Nebraska.

An update on my broken femur: I’m improving! I’m moving from a walker to using a cane. I continue to work from home. I know that a lot of people love remote working. It has its advantages and disadvantages, I suppose, but I guess I’m just kind of old-fashioned. I miss going into the office and working with Roxy Orr, my Operations Manager!

If nothing else, this experience has forced me to develop my patience. It’s also taught me that I need to stop moving so fast. I believe the phrases are I have to be more present. I need to be in the now This experience has also taught me to be more appreciative of my many blessings. I appreciate Roxy for taking care of Women’s Edition. I appreciate Manny for helping me in so many areas of my life. Every day, I see progress in walking. I know that very soon I will be back at our office, driving again, and being able to go out and meet people in person. Meeting and helping new business owners is one of my favorite parts of what I have done for 39 years.

Enjoy the spring! Relish in the flowers beginning to bloom and everything turning green. We’ll see you next month!

Malt Pancakes

Mix 2 eggs, 1 and 1/4 cups of whole milk, 3 Tablespoons of melted butter, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Blend together 1 and 1/2 cups of flour, 3/4 teaspoon of salt, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/4 cup of vanilla malt powder. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix lightly. Rest the batter for 10 minutes. Prepare pancakes on a greased griddle, flipping when bubbles form at the edges. Serve with warm syrup or fruits.

Morning Glories

Mix 2 and 1/2 cups of flour, 1 and 1/4 cups of sugar, 3 teaspoons of cinnamon, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. In another bowl, mix 3 eggs, 3/4 cup of applesauce, 1/2 cup of canola oil, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Pour this into the flour mixture and mix lightly. Stir in 2 cups of grated carrots, 1 peeled and diced apple, 1 cup of drained crushed pineapple, 1/2 cup of flaked coconut, 1/2 cup of raisins, and 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts. Mix everything lightly. Fill 24 paper-lined muffin tins with batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Rest for 5 minutes in the pan, then remove.

Finely chop 1 cup of pecans (or dried crispy onions). Blend with 1 cup of panko-style breadcrumbs. Spread 4 fish fillets (skinless, any type) with a light coating of mayonnaise. Season both sides of the fish as you wish (salt, pepper, dill, garlic powder, onion powder). Coat each fillet with the pecan mixture and pat evenly. Heat a cast iron or non-stick skillet

Beef Dinner in a Pot

Rub 1/4 cup of seasoned (salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder) flour into both sides of a 3-pound chuck roast. Place the roast in a large stock pot or deep baking dish. Cover the roast with cut-up stew vegetables: carrots, potatoes, celery, onions, parsnips. Pour in 2-3 cups of beef stock or consommé. Bake in a 325-degree oven for 3 hours, or until the meat tests done (145 degrees). Serve with jus on the side.

Carrot Cake

Whisk together 2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. In a large mixing bowl, beat 3 eggs, 3/4 cup of vegetable oil, 3/4 cup of buttermilk, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture. Mix in 2 cups of grated carrots, an 8-ounce can of drained crushed pineapple, 3 ounces of sweetened flaked coconut, and 1 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts. Pour the mixture into a greased and floured 13x9inch baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes (test for doneness with a toothpick). Cool. Frost with your favorite cream cheese frosting.

Glazed Easter Ham

Make diamond cuts on the top of a large pre-cooked ham (bone-in preferred). Stud the ham with whole cloves. Place on a rack in a large roasting pan and tent loosely with foil. Bake at 325 degrees for 2 hours. Heat 3 cups of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of spicy brown mustard, 3 Tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, and 1 can of cola. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15 minutes until the mixture is thick and sticky. After the 2-hour baking time is done, remove the ham from the oven every 20

minutes and brush the glaze on the ham. After each glaze, return the ham to the oven. The total baking time should be 3 to 4 hours.

Scalloped Sweet Potatoes

Peel and thinly slice (about 1/8 inch thick) 2 pounds of sweet potatoes. In a large bowl, mix together 3/4 cup of cream with 3 eggs, 1/2 cup of Half and Half, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, 1 Tablespoon of maple syrup, and 2 teaspoons of brown sugar. Add the sweet potatoes to the cream mixture and toss to coat. Lightly grease a baking dish. Pour in the coated potatoes and all the liquid. Dot with a few chunks of butter. Bake at 300 degrees for about 90 minutes.

Cooked Asparagus and Butter Sauce

Rinse and snap or cut 1 pound (or more) of fresh asparagus. In a large skillet, melt 1 stick of butter. Add the asparagus and sauté on medium heat. Add salt and pepper, a few garlic cloves, and toasted almonds as desired. Stir until al dente (about 5-8 minutes).

Easter Nest Candies

Place 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1 cup of peanut butter in a large microwaveable bowl. Microwave at 50 percent power for 1-2 minutes, until the chocolate chips are melted. Stir in 3 cups of chow mein noodles and stir to coat. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. Drop small portions of the mixture onto the cookie sheet, shaping into “nests” with your fingers (indentation, high sides). Place miniature jelly beans or candied eggs in the center of each nest and press lightly. Refrigerate.

Jump into Spring

What’s Not to Love?

In the spring, every day is a beautiful gift of hope. From the fresh green shoots coming up in our yards to the warm breezes that make us shed our jackets, spring is a time when everyone starts planning events. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, graduations, weddings, class reunions. No matter how many events we’ll be attending, it is time to start thinking about what we need to spruce up our spring and summer outfits!

A sporty sensibility has been a reigning trend, as women love to be comfortable and classic but still modern and fresh. The favored pant of the season may already be in your closet—it’s a high-waisted pant with a moderately flared leg. You see it most often in black, but it’s now being offered in the colors of spring. This pant is wonderfully flattering on all body types. Keep in mind that sufficient length is important. Flares are leg-lengthening if they are long to the point of meeting the floor. Even if they puddle a bit, that’s okay. This is such a versatile piece; you can wear it literally anywhere in the world and look trendy.

Loose pants are still important, and there will be a lot of great choices out there, especially in white. From jeans to tailored styles, the white pant will be another great summer option. It will be everywhere, looking fresh, modern, and summery. To go with that great summer pant is a trend that is being called “coastal cool.” This is a mixture of nautical and preppy. Go ahead and indulge in stripes, gold buttons, sailor flares, boat shoes, and cardigans. You don’t have to summer in Nantucket…just dress like you do! Ironically, the other popular pant of the season will be the slim pant. Not a skinny pant like the leggings of the past, but a trim, tailored pant that is perfect for work or a dressier occasion.

I am personally not a pastel person. For some reason, though, the petal pinks, baby blues, and even the new pistachio green are looking good to me this year. These colors are especially useful if you are feeling a little boho.

What exactly do people mean when they say bohemian style? It consists of what I like to call a little hipster fun. Boho-chic draws inspiration from free-spirited artists and travelers. It is relaxed and carefree, connecting with nature by using natural materials, earth tones, and eclectic patterns.

One of the key elements to boho style is layering. Mixing different textures, colors, and patterns allows for endless creativity. Floppy hats, headbands, fringed bags, and leather belts enhance the boho aesthetic. Fell a little shy about trying this? Keep it simple.

Start out with a midi-length skirt of natural fiber. Add a soft white shirt, a leather belt, strappy sandals, and beaded jewelry. That’s boho-chic perfection without too much commitment.

Another hot-off-the-runway trend is to wear these beautiful pastel shades with contrasting dark tones. For example, try a pink skirt with a wide black belt and black shoes. This juxtaposition is really hot this year, mixing the airy with the hard-edged.

Dresses are always important for summer. One and done! Find the perfect one and you can wear it multiple times on multiple occasions with just a change of accessories. There is nothing wrong with your favorite little black dress (LBD), but spring and summer are the seasons to experiment with soft yellows, petal pinks, or the popular allwhite dress. A simple, body-skimming linen dress is always in vogue. Or look for a more romantic style with details like ruffles, soft tailoring, and puffy sleeves. I personally like a dress hem to hit around the knee; that seems to be the most flattering for all heights and body types. Of course, if you like a midi length or longer, go for it!

Accessories can make or break an outfit. What to look for this year? Oversized sunglasses reminiscent of Jackie O will be everywhere. Tailored belting has been in vogue for the last couple of years. This year, look for chunky statement belts with rhinestone embellishments and large gold closures, along with leopard and other animal prints. Handbags will look futuristic in metallics. Jewelry will be layered and stacked in bold styles, featuring beads and chunky mixed metals.

Personal style is what fashion is all about. Feel free to be your true self… even if your true self changes daily! One day you may feel glamourous, another day you may be feeling a bohemian vibe, and another day you may just want to be sporty and simple. Spring is a good time to indulge yourself a little and have fun with your fashion.

The Fowling Warehouse Omaha

There’s a New Game in Town

Has the roller coaster of weather this winter left you feeling a little disoriented? Do you need a brand-new idea to snap you out of that funk? Here’s an idea, and it rhymes with bowling: Let’s go Fowling! Never heard of Fowling? This new sporting activity may be just what you are looking for as you wait out the last stretch of winter. Grab your mates and meet up at the The Fowling Warehouse Omaha, located at 5585 North 90th Street.

The Fowling Warehouse Omaha franchise is locally owned. Mark Wolf, one of the local partners, was well prepared to run a business. “I had 25 years of experience in the business world, staffing and recruiting,” he says. “I was surrounded by people who taught me a good work ethic, to do the right thing, and to reach for goals.” He feels fortunate to have had such rich and varied business experiences, as well as mentors and colleagues.

Mark knows that business success starts with due diligence and a tight business plan. When he looked into franchise opportunities, he wanted a venture that was creative, maybe something a bit unusual. And he found it! The Fowling Warehouse opened on August 1st, 2024.

Fowling was invented 10 years ago by an avid Michigan tailgater. It is a mash-up of bowling and football. The game is simple and can be played by people of all ages and athletic abilities—anyone who can throw or hoist a football.

Mark researched several franchises and visited other Warehouse locations. He came away with the idea that Fowling was something that Omahans would enjoy. “This is something new and fun. You don’t have to be athletic or skilled to play,” he notes. “You literally are throwing a football at a ten-pin set up, like a bowling alley. And it’s more fun than bowling OR football! I love seeing the smiling faces, high-fives, and fist pumps from our customers.”

The Fowling Warehouse is a mammoth 50,000-squarefoot event space. The open floor plan has a private meeting space and state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment. The Fowling lanes themselves can also be converted into custom event spaces. You can create an event with a theme or for a specific occasion—bachelor or bachelorette parties, holiday gatherings, retirement parties, birthday parties, and more. Mark sees a variety of groups who are eager to try a sport, who want to spend some time together, or who simply enjoy a bit of competition and laughs.

The large event space can also facilitate trade shows and corporate team building. “I love the idea of offering metro businesses another avenue to invest in the development of their employees,” Mark says. “Many businesses that are focusing on team building begin their event in our meeting room.

We have a large screen for projection and great audio. After the initial meeting, the group moves into the Fowling lanes to play.”

Fowling can be played by two people or up to 10 on a team. The rules are simple. Bowling pins are set up in a traditional ten-pin pattern, with a red pin in the center. If you knock down the red pin without knocking any other pins over, you’ve made a BONK, and you automatically win the round. As the Warehouse website states, a BONK is the highest honor that a fowler can attain. Otherwise, you’re just trying to knock down all of your opponent’s pins before they knock down all of yours. There’s no right or wrong way to throw the football—it can even roll or bounce its way to the pins.

Although The Fowling Warehouse does not serve food, it does have two bars that are fully stocked with domestic and foreign beers, cocktails, sodas, mocktails, and other non-alcoholic beverages. If you want to add food to your game, you can bring your own or have it delivered. There are several popular eateries close by that deliver, including Mangia Italiana, Nepali, and Jimmy Johns, just to name a few.

The Fowling Warehouse is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., Fridays from 4:00 to 11:00 p.m., Saturdays from noon to midnight, and Sundays from noon to 8:00 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays are reserved for groups larger than 20, and reservations are required on those days. All ages are welcome, but you must be at least 6 years old to fowl. After 7:00 p.m., you must be 21 to enter. The cost is $18 per person, unlimited play.

Follow The Fowling Warehouse Omaha on Facebook or Instagram, and check out their website at Fowlingomaha.com for specific details and pictures. For information, reservations, or league play inquiries, call 402-866-3695 or send a message to info@FowlingOmaha.com.

What’s for Dinner?

Nebraska Originals

When people think of Nebraskan food, they probably think of steak. That’s fair…but that’s not all! Nebraska has produced a variety of remarkable, original homemade dishes. If you have family or friends visiting soon, consider treating them to an authentic Nebraska dish.

My friends on the east coast can’t help but marvel at what is perhaps Nebraska’s best-known dish: the Runza. An entire restaurant chain has developed around this one-of-a-kind sandwich. The tale of that beloved Nebraska meat pocket (sometimes called a bierock) is about much more than a sandwich. It’s a treasure hundreds of years in the making, involving broken promises, German immigrants, and family recipes.

Catherine the Great, the German-born Empress of Russia, invited Germans to relocate to Russia in 1760. Many Germans took her up on her offer. They lived mostly separate from Russians but did learn of the pirozhki and adapted it to create the bierock. In the 1900s, their living situation in Russia deteriorated, and many fled, immigrating to the Dakotas, Kansas, and Nebraska. As immigrants always have, they brought their recipes along.

Sarah “Sally” Everett, the daughter of a German immigrant, is credited for remaking the bierock and giving the Runza its name. In 1949, she and her brother, Alex Brening, opened the first Runza drive-in restaurant, in Lincoln, with about $500. At any given Nebraska Cornhuskers home football game, as many as 15,000 Runzas are eaten.

A Nebraska invention that has gained truly nationwide popularity is the Reuben sandwich. One origin story holds that Reuben Kulakofsky, a Lithuanian-born Jewish grocer residing in Omaha, asked for a sandwich made of corned beef and sauerkraut at his weekly poker game, which was held in the Blackstone Hotel. The participants included the hotel’s owner, Charles Schimmel.

Schimmel’s son, who worked in the kitchen, made the first Reuben for Reuben, adding Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing to his order and putting the whole thing on rye bread. The sandwich gained local fame when Schimmel put it on the Blackstone’s lunch menu. Its fame spread when a former employee of the hotel won a national sandwich idea contest with the recipe.

One of my favorite salad dressings was born in Nebraska. In the late 1940s, Dorothy Lynch and her husband ran the restaurant at the local Legion Club in St. Paul, Nebraska. When Dorothy introduced Legion Club members to her homemade salad dressing, it rapidly became a local favorite. From there, its popularity grew. You can put it on fries,

vegetables, meat, whatever you want.

Kool-Aid is not technically a food, I suppose, but it is still a delicious Nebraska invention. It got its start in the 1920s as a liquid drink mix called Fruit Smack. Chemist Edwin Perkins of Hastings, Nebraska, developed the powdered version to avoid the costs of packaging and the risk of breaking bottles. Eventually, the name was changed to Kool-Aid, and Perkins sold it as an affordable luxury for children at five cents per packet.

A cheese Frenchee is a deep-fried grilled cheese sandwich, and it is one of my favorite Nebraska foods. In 1955, Nebraskans James King and Larry Price opened the fast-food restaurant King’s Food Host in Lincoln. They looked to cash in on the deep-fried craze, creating fried pizza, hot dogs, and tuna melts. None would be as popular as the cheese Frenchee, so-called perhaps because the cheese Frenchee vaguely resembles the French sandwich Croque Monsieur. The cheese Frenchee quickly became the restaurant’s top-selling item. Nebraska fast-food chain Don & Millie’s has been known for their cheese Frenchees for decades.

I tried Rocky Mountain oysters once, and they weren’t bad. For the uninitiated: These are not oysters; they are deep-fried bull testicles. The genesis of Rocky Mountain oysters is linked to the cattle industry of the western frontier. Ranchers in the 1800s would castrate their young animals to curb aggression, promote growth, and manage breeding. This resulted in an abundance of animal testicles, which, by necessity or creativity, led to them being cooked and served.

Raisin pie is said to have been a recipe brought to the American Midwest by German Mennonite communities. It is traditionally served at the meal following a funeral. Before refrigeration was available, fresh fruits were harder to store. Most homes, however, had dried raisins on hand. The raisin pie, then, was often brought as a gift after a friend or neighbor had passed away because the ingredients were always available on short notice and the pie kept well even if it wasn’t eaten right away.

The next time you have company from out of town, treat them to one of these iconic Nebraska foods, all either invented or perfected in the Cornhusker State.

Mid Plains Podiatry

The Importance of Foot Health

When you consider how often we depend on our feet, it seems outlandish that we don’t give them more thought and care. Foot health is necessary in maintaining overall health and well-being, essential for supporting our weight and getting us from point A to point B. But we don’t pay much attention to our feet until we experience a foot problem or concern. Even when they do raise an alarm, we might just wish it away. Ignoring foot pain can cause a problem to worsen and can even lead to permanent damage. Dr. Beth Klawitter at Mid Plains Podiatry is exactly who we need to help us maintain healthy feet and handle any foot and ankle issues that may arise.

Foot problems tend to have a domino effect on the rest of the body, including knee, hip, and even lower back issues. The negative aspects of foot problems and pain can certainly have an impact on the quality of your life. Dr. Klawitter and her staff can provide care for all aspects of foot and ankle problems, including plantar fasciitis, neuropathy, tendonitis, warts, athlete’s foot, bunions, gout, tendonitis, foot and ankle fractures, and so much more.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about Dr. Klawitter is her specialty in minimally invasive surgical procedures. These procedures are done with very small incisions and involve less pain than many invasive procedures. She doesn’t use screws, pins or plates—in most cases, there aren’t even any sutures! Dr. Klawitter has a surgical suite in her facility where many procedures can be performed with just local anesthesia. This also translates into less cost to the patient, with today’s rising insurance costs. It’s a winning combination!

Dr. Klawitter was born and raised in Omaha. Her father, Dr. Paul Klawitter, practiced podiatry in Omaha for over 30 years. He also specialized in minimally invasive surgery. She worked with him for 10 years, learning how much the minimally invasive procedures helped his patients with much less scarring than traditional surgery. The incisions are less than a quarter inch in size.

Everyone with foot and ankle problems is looking for long-lasting pain relief, along with better function and mobility. In the past, conventional surgery and long recoveries were the norm. Minimal down time and minimal invasiveness are certainly a better option for most of her patients, Dr. Klawitter notes.

One of the newest minimally invasive procedures that Dr. Klawitter offers is an in-office plantar fasciotomy. The outpatient procedure is done with a very small incision and produces excellent results with only modest and limited dis -

comfort. Recovery time is measured in days, not weeks, and it includes only discomfort, not immobility. Most people are back into their regular shoes the next day.

Engaging with healthcare professionals can sometimes feel daunting. Many of us have felt confused by a chosen treatment when we didn’t fully understand why that was the best option. You won’t find that confusion at Mid Plains Podiatry. “I always want my patients to make considered and informed decisions about their available treatment options and understand the results,” Dr. Klawitter says.

When you have a consultation with Dr. Klawitter, she takes into consideration your job, living situation, and overall health when deciding what type of treatment to provide. And she always shares the reasoning behind her recommendations. “My patients seem to appreciate the fact that time is taken to explain why certain procedures would be beneficial and what the outcome could be,” says Dr. Klawitter.

What Dr. Klawitter loves most about her job is simple: helping patients live better. “When a patient comes into the office in pain that they have tolerated for a long time, and I can help them to relieve that pain and improve their quality of life, that is very rewarding,” she says. Unsurprisingly, she attests that her father has been a great influence in her life, both personally and professionally. His dedication to his patients, giving them the utmost care and consideration, helped shape her into the outstanding podiatrist that she is today.

Dr. Klawitter and her team strive for the highest standard of care in podiatry. Their goal is always to identify the cause of the problem and try to find a solution. Their new office is located at 2821 South 87th Avenue, where they offer a wide range of treatments, minimally invasive surgeries, and KERYflex™ for deformed nails. If your feet need some attention (and they probably do), call Mid Plains Podiatry at 402-3154344 or visit midplainspodiatry.com.

Concrete in Landscape

Creative Concrete Design!

Spring is in the air! It’s time to breathe new life into your outdoor landscape with fresh, new ideas. Concrete isn’t new, but concrete in 2025 has been updated for a fresh aesthetic. From colorful walkways to outdoor kitchens and patios, the potential of concrete will sweep you off your feet and dazzle your neighbors and guests. Let’s plunge into some ideas to customize your space with your own personal concrete style. That’s right, concrete! In this article, we’ll stamp, color, and pour heart and soul into concrete ideas for outdoor living.

Why concrete? The visual appeal alone is enough reason. Factor in durability and versatility, and—boom!—your project has just bloomed. We’ll examine a variety of styles, textures, and colors. We even have ideas that will improve your home’s value. It’s time to explore, enhance, and unleash your concrete creativity!

Concrete is expected to grow in 2025, and costs have dipped slightly since January. A customized look increases curb appeal, and experts also estimate that your home’s value may increase by about 5 to 10 percent. The more thoughtful the design and aesthetics (think color and decorative stamping), the higher your home’s appraisal is likely to go.

In other words, concrete isn’t just a dull gray slab; it’s an upscale technique that weaves in color, stamping, and decorative overlays. Picture a gorgeously designed outdoor space that seamlessly blends elegance with function. Have you been dreaming about a charming stone-patterned walkway to your front door? Check. How about a cozy firepit for chilly spring nights? Check. Can you smell the smoky barbecue wafting through the air from that new outdoor concrete kitchen design? Rustic patios and vibrant driveways aren’t boring when you can craft a unique, long-lasting outdoor space.

Let’s start with driveways and walkways. They’re often one of the first things people see when they drive up or drive by. A plain slab serves function, but why not create a little flair? Stamped concrete frequently resembles a specific texture, imprinted to look like stone, brick, or wood. Your contractor uses rubber stamps to create patterns and textures on fresh concrete. The finished product mimics a look such as natural stone tiles, brick pavers, even cobblestone.

Concrete is less expensive than natural stone or other high-end materials and lasts even longer! Stamped concrete might last 25 to 40 years with proper maintenance. Reseal every few years to get even more bang for your buck. Sealing creates a barrier that safeguards against extreme weather as well as normal wear and tear. Sealant increases resistance to stains, protects against moisture and UV damage, and reduces cracking.

Colored concrete for driveways and walkways paves the way with endless possibilities. Partner with your contractor for the best advice about colors and patterns. Pigments can be mixed into the cement before pouring, or stains can be applied after the concrete has set, for a rich earthy hue. Go for a decorative banding pattern with layers of color. Start with a lighter base and apply darker colors on top.

Earth tones like browns, tans, grays, and slight reds are on the rise. On the flip side, vivid hues make a bold statement. Complement your home’s design with variegated concrete to create a stunning effect with your lawn’s greenery. Surface-applied stains and dyes may require additional protective coatings for color maintenance.

Colored concrete can also camouflage minor cracks. Use concrete overlays for a fresh new surface, or blend imperfections right into the design with concrete stain. Textured finishes are also great at disguising surface flaws. Apply a colored stain or resurface the area with a decorative concrete overlay to get a brand-new look without concrete replacement!

Keep your new concrete clean from dirt, debris, and spills like oil and car fluids. Stains can weaken concrete over time, so sweep and power wash regularly to maintain a stunning appearance. Avoid harsh chemicals if possible. Salts for de-icing purposes tend to damage surfaces in the winter. Consider alternatives like sand or kitty litter for traction. Protect your patio or driveway with mats, rugs, or pavers in heavy traffic areas.

A concrete walkway stamped in flagstone or a slate pattern to mimic a natural look brings beauty with every step. Colored concrete that contrasts with your garden is a great look.

Are pavers more your style? Classic brick pavers are always charming, but concrete pavers offer more versatility with shapes, colors, and size. Concrete pavers are more affordable, too. Try interlocking concrete pavers like a puzzle into a distinct and colorful pattern. This is a popular design for driveways, too, enduring enough for heavy traffic. Concrete pavers generally last anywhere from 20 to 30 years. With rigorous maintenance, they can last up to 50 years!

Experts recommend applying sealer every three to five years, generally speaking, but you should check with your hardscape pro or contractor for the best plan. Tiny cracks can expand if water seeps in and freezes. Let your contractor know right away! They may be able to patch cracks with patching compound before the problem gets worse.

Patios are the heart of outdoor living, and poured concrete patios enhance the experience with decorative stamping, staining, and stunning colors. Patio pavers create a sleek, modern aesthetic. If you’re after the raw, natural look for a rustic and elegant patio, create a natural stone look with stamped concrete. For a sleek and sophisticated look,

consider slate-styled stamped concrete. It’s cool underfoot on those hot summer days or on a quiet night under the stars. It requires less upkeep than natural slate and provides additional durability during extreme weather, including heat and humidity or the freeze-thaw cycle.

An outdoor kitchen will completely transform your patio. If your outdoor plans include cooking and entertaining, invest in a concrete countertop for durable, weather-resistant, and customizable options. Stains, various polishes, and embedded decoration add glamour! Concrete outdoor cooking areas can last for decades. If rustic and cozy is right up your alley, mix in brick or wood for warmth. Create an outdoor bar island from decorative concrete, embedded with stones and rocks for a unique finish.

Concrete is a popular choice for sinks and cabinetry not only for affordability and customization but because they can be cleaned with mild soap and water and can stand up to heat. If you want durable seating for all those amazing outdoor meals, here’s another idea—arrange concrete seating with benches and tables to enhance the experience. They can be precast and custom designed!

Few things are more inviting than a backyard firepit. Concrete firepits are sleek, modern, and heat-resistant. Customize with stamped cement to mimic brick for a rustic look. Consider a modern concrete gas firepit with a custom design. Concrete is durable enough to withstand extreme temperatures. The design is up to you!

If you’re looking for landscape borders to polish your outdoor view, try concrete curbing to define garden beds. This technique offers curb appeal and long-term durability. An as -

set to your home’s value, curbing with concrete is less expensive and more durable than other options. The styles, colors, and pattern options are endless, and you can edge just about anywhere—around fences, trees, driveways, walkways, and, of course, garden beds. Landscape borders create definition and a crisp professional finish. Sprinkle smooth or patterned pops of color in your new concrete borders for extra zing!

Want to add tranquility to your outdoor escape? Water features such as concrete fountains, ponds, and waterfalls create a relaxing space to detox and quash the stress of everyday life. Components are mixed to create a stone-like material that easily withstands water and moisture. It’s moldable for the design you have in mind, too. Often called cast stone, concrete fountains contrast beautiful hues and pops of color for a centerpiece among the gardens. Concrete water features can be heavy, so it’s best to ask your landscaper for help. Whether you want a rain curtain, bubble wall, cement basin in the water garden, or tabletop tiers, your pro has the tools, equipment, and know-how for a seamless installation.

Concrete is a great choice for a stunning, long-lasting outdoor oasis. Landscaping with concrete isn’t just practical— it’s an opportunity to create a unique, eye-catching outdoor space that lasts for decades. Whether you want a vibrant stamped patio for entertaining or a sleek polished outdoor kitchen, decorative concrete can bring your vision to life. Why settle for boring? Build your space with bold hues or neutral elegance, and your work of art will last for years to come!

Omaha Health Therapy Center

A Whole-Person Approach to Health and Wellness

Are you or a loved one being treated for cancer or a chronic health condition? You are not alone. According to the CDC, 1.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year, and 6 in 10 adults have at least one chronic disease. Although managing these conditions can feel overwhelming, there are ways to actively support your health and well-being. A great first step would be to reach out to Omaha Health Therapy Center.

Omaha Health Therapy Center offers a holistic and integrative approach to medicine. It combines integrative and supportive cancer treatments to help patients in their health journey. The clinic aims to optimize patient health, improve wellness, and provide comprehensive care that treats the whole person.

Owner Sarah Kracht earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the College of Saint Mary, her Master of Science in Nursing at Creighton University, and her board certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She has also received advanced certifications in integrative cancer therapies, repurposed drugs for cancer, and supportive IV therapies.

Sarah developed an interest in holistic and integrative medicine when a family member was diagnosed with a rare disorder for which chemotherapy was the only treatment option. Her family member wanted to pursue alternative treatments. Determined to find a solution, Sarah discovered successful integrative treatments outside the United States.

This experience fueled her passion for providing patients with options beyond conventional medicine. In 2018, she assumed ownership of Omaha Health Therapy Center, where she offers a range of supportive treatments and therapies for various chronic conditions, including cancer, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, heart disease, muscle aches and pain, inflammation, macular degeneration, heavy metal toxicity, and damaged tissues, and more.

Popular treatments include high-dose intravenous vitamin C, Prolozone, extracorporeal blood oxygenation and ozonation (EBOO), chelation therapy, Methylene Blue, and ozone. “Our treatments are medically based,” Sarah shares. “We identify the root cause of issues through testing and research so we can fix them, not just mask the symptoms with medication.” Omaha Health Therapy Center is the only clinic in Omaha that is certified in chelation therapy and ozone therapy.

High-dose intravenous vitamin C has been shown to target and eliminate cancer cells, and may be used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment. EBOO, an advanced ozone treatment, cleanses blood through a filter to improve blood flow, cellular healing, and cellular oxygen utilization. Chelation intravenous therapy removes heavy metal toxicity. High levels of heavy metals such as mercury, iron, and lead in the blood can be toxic and may lead not only to a chronic disease but also to fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, and depression.

Patients receive a full consultation during their initial visit. “We go over the patient’s health history from birth to the present time, not just their current issue,” Sarah explains. “A person’s total health history plays a role in their overall health.”

Recommended testing might include lab tests or genetic testing. “We do what is necessary to get the root cause of a patient’s problem.” After test results are reviewed, the certified, experienced team works with the patient to determine the best care plan.

Omaha Health Therapy Center is proud to announce the newest addition for treatment options. For those suffering from depression but not getting relief from antidepressants, Neurostar may be an option. Neurostar is a non-invasive therapy that uses focused magnetic pulses to revitalize synapses in the brain and improve the function of mood-regulating areas. “This therapy has an 80 percent success rate at improving depression,” Sarah states.

Sarah’s patient care philosophy is straightforward. “We provide a welcoming environment in our clinic. Our holistic and integrative approach to medicine is research-based. We believe in providing compassionate care and prioritizing the well-being of each patient.” She emphasizes that active listening, clear communication, and shared decision-making are critical to ensuring that treatments align with patients’ values and needs.

What should patients look for when seeking holistic and integrative services? Sarah stresses the importance of ensuring that the medical provider is certified. “The medical provider should have the appropriate knowledge, training, and certification for the services they are offering.” Treatments provided by underqualified or uncertified practitioners could lead to adverse effects.

Patients are pleased to receive effective treatments that provide results, Sarah says. “They are happy to find someone who is looking at a whole-body approach instead of just treating symptoms. I love seeing patients improve and live a better quality of life.”

Omaha Health Therapy Center is located at 8031 West Center Road, Suite 300, in Omaha. Call them at 402-7639335 or find them online at chelationomaha.com.

Firm It Up Eliminating Loose Skin

Like fine wine, there are many aspects of life that get better with age. Many of us are enjoying retirement after a full career of work. We’ve built long-lasting friendships. We’ve gained much wisdom as we’ve experienced life’s ups and downs. Our skin, however, is no fine wine—it almost inevitably goes south as we get older.

Sooner or later, we notice “turkey neck” or saggy jowls. Our upper arms flap like chicken wings, and our tummies jiggle like Jell-o. Loose skin may be the result of something we’re glad we experienced, like pregnancy or significant weight loss or even just living to a ripe old age, but it’s still a bummer. Thankfully, there are many treatment options available to help firm and tighten those saggy, baggy areas.

Many skin-firming creams, lotions, and serums contain ingredients that have been clinically proven to tighten skin. Products containing retinoids such as retinol and vitamin A can help your body produce more collagen and even build elastin— both key components for skin elasticity and smoothness. Peptide creams contain amino acid chains that also stimulate collagen production. Hyaluronic acid draws moisture and plumps the skin for a firmer, smoother overall appearance. Talk to your dermatologist about which skin firming products might suit your needs.

Non-surgical skin tightening procedures can help restore a firmer, smoother, more youthful appearance with little to no downtime. These procedures are called non-invasive because they leave your skin intact. You won’t have a puncture wound,

incision, or raw skin afterward, although you may experience some temporary redness and swelling.

Non-surgical skin tightening procedures can be performed on loose skin on the face, neck, or body. Results appear gradually over a period of several weeks and may last up to a year. Multiple treatments may be needed for optimal results. In addition to firming the skin, these treatments may also improve skin tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. While there are very few serious side effects associated with non-surgical skin tightening, it may not be appropriate for patients who are pregnant, taking certain medications, or have certain medical conditions. Always ask your clinician!

Thermage is an FDA-cleared treatment option for loose skin. Using a handheld device, dermatologists target the area with radiofrequency technology that heats collagen fibers deep within the skin. While existing collagen is stimulated, new collagen fibers begin to develop, making the skin appear instantly tighter.

Thermage works on the stomach, legs, buttocks, and arms. The process takes from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the size of the area being treated, and patients are able to

“Our mission is to offer small- to medium-sized businesses an affordable way to reach women, ages 25 to 64 plus, in the middle to upper income level. This demographic group makes or influences over 85% of all buying decisions in this country.”

resume normal activities right away. After that, collagen production continues to increase for months, resulting in visibly contoured, firmer skin within two to six months after treatment. Results can last up to a year or two.

Cutera Titan is another promising non-invasive anti-aging treatment. It’s an infrared laser that works by heating the water deep in the dermis (that is, the middle layer of skin). This causes collagen in the skin to tighten and also promotes new collagen and elastin growth.

Cutera’s infrared technology works similarly to radiofrequency but provides a more uniform distribution of energy. This is beneficial for treating larger areas such as the jowls and neck. It can also address sagging skin after weight loss and pregnancy. One session takes about an hour. Some improvement in skin texture and tightness is noticeable after one treatment, but a second treatment is usually recommended after four weeks.

Some skin tightening treatments use ultrasound energy, which heats skin to induce collagen production and increase firmness. A handheld device transmits ultrasound waves through the skin’s surface. It’s effective for older patients looking for a mini face lift without surgery and for younger patients who want to preserve skin elasticity.

We all love a good massage, but did you know that a massage can trigger an anti-aging response? Massage improves circulation, resulting in more oxygen being delivered to the body’s organs, increasing collagen production. A massage also helps tighten muscles, resulting in a firmer skin appearance.

To maintain the health and elasticity of your skin, it’s also important to maintain a healthy body overall. Some foods that promote skin elasticity include salmon, edamame, broccoli, peppers, almonds, berries, and avocados. Incorporate these supportive foods into your balanced diet. Stay hydrated by drinking six to eight glasses of water daily. Get moving! Regular exercise promotes cell growth and stimulates collagen production, both of which help the skin maintain its elasticity.

There are so many skin-tightening options available! Consult a dermatologist or a licensed, trained aesthetician to firm up the best treatment options for your needs.

Bathroom Bliss Does Yours Need a Glow-Up?

When it comes to our homes, we all have our favorite rooms. While the kitchen remains the number one choice for many, another room is emerging as the unsung hero of the modern home. Which room? If you guessed the bathroom, you’d be right! Think about it. We begin and end each day in the bathroom. From that energizing morning shower to the blissful serenity of an evening bubble bath, we rely on hard-working bathrooms to set the tone for a great day and help ease us into a deep and restful sleep at night. No wonder crafting a personal retreat is at the top of most homeowners’ wish lists!

Creating a spa-like aesthetic is about transforming your bathroom into a sanctuary where you can truly relax. Begin by embracing the beauty of nature. Selecting organic materials like natural stone, textured tiles, and warm wood finishes instantly brings a sense of calm into your space, lending welcome warmth to a space that can otherwise feel cold and sterile. Reclaimed wood vanities with unique details beautifully capture this earthy connection. The combination of natural wood and brass or polished nickel hardware serves to elevate a bathroom space, striking a perfect balance between rustic character and sophisticated luxury. Incorporating amenities like a heated floor and beautiful dimmable lighting complete the atmosphere of serenity.

A walk-in shower is an essential element in a modern bath. A glass enclosure with glass doors offers streamlined styling in addition to improved accessibility and safety. When redesigning

a bathroom, it’s important to consider your own needs as well as the resale potential. If you don’t care for baths or have limited space, you may wonder if having a tub is really necessary. According to the National Association of Home Builders, having at least one bathtub can increase a home’s value by 20 percent and will appeal to a wider range of buyers. For example, for families with young children, a tub can be indispensable.

A tiny powder room can be a big design opportunity! The small space is an invitation to experiment with bold color or patterned wallpaper and luxurious touches that guests will enjoy. For a chic powder bath, incorporate a vintage vanity, an antique mirror, beautiful sconces, and bold wallpaper. In 2025, statement wallpaper is making a return, adding depth and personality to small spaces. Successfully embrace this trend by balancing existing design elements with wallpaper that reflects your personal style. For example, pairing a bold wallpaper

with neutral flooring and fixtures will avoid overwhelming the space.

When it comes to shared bathrooms, adding double sinks allows multiple people to use the bathroom at the same time. Enclosed toilet and shower areas help with privacy and busy morning schedules.

If you’re planning a bathroom remodel that involves structural changes, it’s a good idea to consult with an architect. These professionals can create a thoughtful design that is tailored to your needs and lifestyle. Architects prioritize functionality while also ensuring that any new design integrates with your existing aesthetic.

Alternatively, an interior designer excels in aesthetics, material selection, and the overall flow of a space, focusing on the look and feel of the bathroom. Either type of professional can guide a bathroom remodel from start to finish, saving you from making costly errors.

Bathrooms use a lot of energy. High-efficiency toilets reduce consumption by using water velocity rather than volume to flush waste. Low-flow showerheads and faucets significantly reduce water use. In addition to saving thousands of gallons of water each year, you will see financial savings on your monthly water bill.

Updating your bathroom is a worthwhile investment, adding to your quality of life while increasing the value of your home. When compared to other home improvements, bathroom remodels tend to bring the highest rate of return on investment. By including features such as walk-in showers, luxury vanities and countertops, and new flooring, you can expect to net about a 70 percent ROI. Any realtor will tell you that today’s home buyers are seeking bathrooms that look and feel like high-end spas. Potential buyers scrutinize bathrooms! A well-maintained, aesthetically pleasing bathroom can close the deal.

When it comes to bathrooms, one thing is certain. Dark, cramped, and outdated bathrooms have been replaced by airy, spa-inspired bathrooms. From master baths to Jack and Jills to tiny powder rooms, remodeling can take a bathroom from dated and drab to inviting and brimming with style. Whether you plan to age in place or sell your home in the future, it’s important to recognize that the bathroom has become the heart of your home’s health and happiness. Investing in your bathroom just makes good sense!

Breaking the Silence Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month is a great time to reflect on emotional well-being and break the stigma surrounding mental health. Amid the hustle of daily life, it is easy to overlook our feelings. But just like physical health, mental health needs care and attention. The challenges of the past few years, including the stress of COVID-19, have made anxiety and emotional struggles even more common, but stigma still prevents many from seeking support. It is time to change that. Prioritizing mental health, having open conversations, and reaching out for help when needed are essential steps toward a healthier, more supportive world.

Recognizing when you or someone you love needs support is the first step. Mental health struggles can manifest in different ways, sometimes subtly and sometimes more obviously. Common signs include changes in sleep patterns, appetite, or mood. A person might feel more irritable, withdraw from social activities, or have trouble focusing. Others may experience persistent anxious thoughts, overwhelming sadness, or detachment. If left unaddressed, these emotions and behaviors can intensify, making everyday life feel overwhelming.

Seeking professional help can make all the difference. There is no shame in reaching out. If someone is experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, immediate support is available by calling 988, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. No one should suffer in silence. Help is within reach. If the need for support does not rise to the level of an emergency, start by asking your primary doctor for a recommendation.

Mental health conditions affect people from all walks of life. Some of the most common include anxiety disorders, which

cause excessive worry and fear. Anxiety affects over 300 million people worldwide, including millions of children and teens. Depression is another widespread condition, often presenting as persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, or severe emotional distress. Other conditions, such as bipolar disorder, PTSD, eating disorders, and ADHD, also affect many individuals. While these challenges can disrupt daily life, proper treatment and support can help people regain balance and stability.

Despite growing awareness, stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to mental health care. Stigma can be public, when society holds negative attitudes, or self-inflicted, when individuals feel embarrassed about seeking help. Structural stigma exists at a systemic level, limiting resources and access to mental health care. These barriers make it harder for people to get the support they need. Breaking the cycle starts with awareness, education, and open conversations that promote understanding and acceptance.

The good news is that treatment options are more accessible than ever. Therapy provides a safe space to explore emotions and develop coping strategies. Medication can help regulate mood and can create space to embark on behavioral therapy. Support groups offer a sense of community, allowing people to connect with others who understand their experiences.

Holistic approaches, such as meditation, exercise, and nutrition, can also complement traditional treatments. Many workplaces now offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), which provide confidential counseling services at no cost to employees. Telehealth services have also expanded, making mental health care more accessible than ever before.

Celebrities, athletes, and influencers have played a crucial role in normalizing mental health conversations. By openly sharing their struggles, they help break the stigma and encourage others to seek help. Social media has also become a platform for mental health advocacy, creating a sense of connection and support. While social media can sometimes be a danger for mental health, it has undoubtedly helped spread awareness and foster conversations about mental well-being. Supporting mental health awareness is especially important for children and teens. Young people may struggle to articulate their emotions, making it vital for parents and caregivers to recognize signs of distress. If a child is withdrawing from activities, struggling in school, or showing extreme anxiety, professional help can make a significant difference. Creating an environment where emotions are validated and support is encouraged can have a lasting impact on a child’s well-being.

The more we talk about mental health, educate ourselves, and support one another, the closer we come to breaking the stigma. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it is an act of strength and self-care. In fact, it’s one of the bravest things you can do.

If you or someone you know is struggling, do not hesitate to reach out. Resources, professionals, and communities are ready to help. Your mental health matters—let us work together to end the stigma and create a world where seeking help is celebrated. Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body! Everyone deserves to feel their best, inside and out.

Home Improvement Projects of All Sizes

There’s a phrase that describes someone who can do everything, especially when it comes to repairs and renovations. We call such a person a“jack of all trades.”Local business owner Kim Stewart is one of these people, and she has been putting her skills to work for the people of Omaha since 1978. Decades ago, she recalls,“a custom home builder who I worked with said, ‘Kim, you are Jill of all trades.’ It stuck, and the name of my company was born.”

Kim is a hands-on contractor whose company does whatever you need for your home or commercial improvement project—from remodeling to renovating, from designing to decorating to painting. She takes on each project personally and visits each job site. Kim is responsible for overall project management, estimating, and designing. She works with trusted subcontractors for many of the tasks.

“Our projects range from simple room refreshes to full house renovations,” Kim shares. “We are the preferred home improvement vendor for a Midtown condo association. Recently, we renovated three bathrooms there, including all new fixtures, painting, and décor, as well as custom closets.”

Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Kim began her career working in environmental services at Mercy Hospital. From there, Kim went on to start her own janitorial company, Kim’s White Glove Janitorial Services, (which is still in business today). Her first customer was the John Day Corporation. That experience introduced her to the construction business. She learned from the ground up, making contacts with home improvement contractors and networking. She decided to formally establish her company in 1978.

am especially proud when I see the look of satisfaction on a client’s face.”

Much of Kim’s business come from referrals, when satisfied clients tell others about her work. Two of those satisfied clients are homeowners in Midtown Crossing. Jackie H. had some water damage and turned to Kim for help. “She was a marvel,” Jackie attests. “Kim was able to match the floors without having to tear out the entire floor. “

Her neighbor, Mimi K., experienced the same level of satisfaction. “I had an old-fashioned bathtub I never used and a tiny shower with a wall section that was empty. She and her crew transformed this area, giving me a fantastic, large shower and custom closet. I even got heated floors that have been wonderful this winter! She is amazing.”

“Designing and renovating is a partnership between the contractor and the client— it’s a two-way street.”

“I’m very proud to be a female-owned home and commercial improvement firm in Omaha,” Kim says. “I am on a job site seven days a week, and I love every minute of it. I design your project and give you the option to either go out and select materials yourself or I’ll bring samples to you. You get my personal touch!”

A point of pride for Kim is staying on schedule. People want their homes improved, she points out, but it can be a hassle to have workers in your space for extended periods of time. Kim hires specialized subcontractors who can get different parts of the job done at the same time. “With my approach to their projects, I can have multiple workers on site, so the time on the project becomes much shorter,” Kim notes. “We pride ourselves on getting jobs done on time.”

“I love my clients, and I treat them like I would like to be treated,” Kim says. “Designing and renovating is a partnership between the contractor and the client—it’s a two-way street. Bringing a design to life can be very rewarding, and I

Of course, all work has its ups and downs, but Kim doesn’t regret for a minute the effort she has put into building her own business.

“Running a business can be challenging. I tell people who want to start a company to set high standards and live by them.”

Kim is a Certified Living In Place Professional (CLIPP), one of the few in the metro area. This means she has been certified and trained to provide design and renovation services for people who need accommodations to their home in order to continue living safely and independently. This can be a major remodel of a home to accomodate an aging person or someone with special needs. This could include installing grab bars in the bathroom, creating wider doorways, zero entry showers and entries, and adjusted sink and counter heights.

When Kim is not working for her customers, she is donating her time and service to her family, Suburban Rotary, and St. Cecilia Cathedral. One friend comments, “Kim is one of the most selfless giving person I know.”

If you need help with any home improvement project, big or small, check out Jill of All Trades. You can reach Kim Stewart by phone at 402-905-8144 on weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Hearing Loss What Can Be Done?

Do you think your hearing is going bad? Do you struggle to hear your own conversation in a crowded room? Do you often ask people to repeat themselves? Do your loved ones ask you why you turn up the volume so high? Do you experience ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds in your ears? If any answer is yes, you may have a hearing loss.

Hearing loss ranges in severity from mild to profound and may affect one or both ears. It is categorized by type. Conductive hearing loss involves the outer or middle ear. Sensorineural involves the inner ear. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural. Central hearing loss may include damage to the auditory nerve.

Hearing loss can happen at any age, but aging does increase the likelihood of hearing loss (like everything else, the inner ear breaks down over time). Studies indicate that about one third of Americans between the ages of 65 and 74, and nearly half of those older, experience some degree of hearing loss.

Heredity plays a role in hearing loss, as your genetic makeup may increase the likelihood of damage. Exposure to excessive noise is another risk factor. Whether constant or explosive, any noise over 70 decibels may lead to hearing damage; the louder the noise, the less time it takes for permanent damage to occur. High doses of some medications may have short-term effects on hearing. Illnesses that cause high fever may harm the cochlea. Other causes of hearing damage may include a ruptured eardrum or unusual bone growths or tumors.

Age-related hearing loss is progressive; you may not notice it right away. If you experience sudden hearing loss, particularly in one ear, do not delay seeking medical attention! If you think you have hearing loss, make an appointment with your personal healthcare provider first. Your doctor may send you to a specialist.

An otolaryngologist (ENT) provides medical and surgical care, diagnosis, and treatment. They work with you to find out why you’re having trouble hearing and offer specific treatment options.

An audiologist is a hearing professional with specialized training in testing to identify the type and degree of hearing loss. Audiologists are licensed to fit and dispense hearing aids, help you adapt to hearing loss, and determine which devices might be most helpful.

A state-licensed hearing instrument specialist conducts basic hearing tests, fits and dispenses hearing aids, and educates individuals and family members about hearing loss.

In some cases, hearing loss may be prevented altogether. If your activities include loud noises from machines or other sources, wear protective ear coverings, noise-abating

Helping Children in Need Sleep Better.

All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. Across the US, too many boys and girls go without a bed—or even a pillow—to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. This can affect their happiness and health. That’s where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in. headphones, or earplugs. Take breaks when possible. Turn down the volume. Be proactive against hearing damage!

Hearing aids vary in price, size, special features, and the way they’re placed in the ear. What are your expectations? Smaller, less expensive devices may not provide the hearing improvement you expect. Your provider will help you choose the best device for your needs.

A completely-in-the-canal (CIC or mini-CIC) hearing aid is molded to fit and improves mild to moderate hearing loss. In-the-ear (ITE) is custom-made in two styles: full-shell and half-shell. Fullshell fills most of the bowl-shaped area of the outer ear; half-shell fills only the lower part. Both are helpful with mild to severe loss and are available with two directional microphones for better hearing in noisy spaces.

Appropriate for all ages and types of loss, behind-the-ear (BTE) aids hook over the top of the ear and rest behind it. A tube connects to a custom earpiece that fits in the ear canal. Receiver-in-canal (RIC) or receiver-in-the-ear (RITE), like the BTE, have a speaker in the ear canal and a tiny wire connecting the piece behind the ear to a receiver.

Open-Fit aids are a variation of the BTE, RIC, or RITE. An open dome in the ear allows amplification of low-frequency sounds, which makes it a good fit for those with mild to moderate high-frequency hearing loss. New technology offers optional features for specific situations: noise reduction, directional microphones, rechargeable batteries, telecoils, wireless connectivity, remote controls, direct audio input, variable programming, and synchronization.

When selecting a hearing aid, seek a reputable provider (ask your hearing specialist to recommend one). Ask about a trial period. Think about future needs. Check for a warranty. Beware of misleading claims. Be sure to plan for the expense…the cost of hearing aids varies widely, and some accessories cost extra.

Once you get your hearing aid, allow yourself time to get used to wearing it. Practice using it in different environments. Seek support at a follow-up appointment. Hearing aids will not return your hearing to its original condition, but it should be clearer!

Equestrian Sports

Saddle Up for Fun

Horses are one of the wonders of the world. They have partnered with humanity for millennia, as beasts of burden, modes of transportation, sporting partners, and loving companions. No wonder equestrian sports—that is, the riding of horses—is one of our society’s oldest sports.

I lived in the country in my early life, and I fondly remember the exhilaration of riding my neighbor’s horse. Researchers have also shown that horses act as natural tranquilizers—that their very presence has a calming effect. Riding is great exercise, burning calories and toning muscles, especially when you combine riding with barn work and grooming. It’s no surprise, given the things you can learn, the training evolved, and the physicality of horseback riding, it became a sport.

The ancient Greeks became skilled riders to give themselves a competitive advantage in skirmishes. Eventually, the English introduced competitive horse shows that highlighted the skills involved. Horseback riding became a sport because of the precision, expertise, skill, focus, years of training, and overall aptitude involved.

It was in the early 20th century that equestrian events were introduced in the Olympics, and those same events are featured today. Medals are awarded in three categories: dressage, when riders and horses perform a series of predetermined events; show jumping, when riders on horseback attempt to jump through a set of obstacles within a specific time; and eventing, when riders compete in dressage, cross-country, and show jumping in a single competition.

There are many additional equestrian sports that occur at other horse shows. In combined driving, a driver on a carriage pulled by horses takes part in three events: dressage, marathon, and cones. Endurance riding is a discipline in which riders and horses compete in races over long distances. Reining focuses on control—riders guide their horses through a pattern of spins, circles, and stops. Vaulting is perhaps the flashiest of equestrian disciplines; it is essentially gymnastics on horseback.

More than two million people ride professionally and many more for pure enjoyment. Why are people so attracted to the sport? First of all, it’s great exercise. Sitting on a horse correctly takes a lot of muscular coordination and effort. It’s not like sitting on a sofa— the horse moves, and you have to stay focused. You have to harness specific muscles and practice good posture. You are constantly adjusting muscles and giving directions to the horse. Riding, even for short distances, can get your heart pumping and can decrease the risks of heart attack and stroke.

The complicated nature of riding turns it into something of a meditative exercise. You have to stay alert and in tune with your horse and the riding conditions, so you won’t have time to check your phone or email. Focusing on the task at hand can help people eliminate stress. Interacting with companion animals can also prevent stress and increase feelings of happiness.

Horseback riding lessons and events are done in groups, so you’ll expand your social circle with like-minded horse lovers. That includes the horse! Horses are gentle creatures, capable of showing real affection. Horseback riding is a team sport, and you can’t do anything without this majestic animal. They will teach you patience,

perseverance, and the importance of non-verbal communication skills.

People have been using horses for therapy for millennia. People with physical disabilities benefit immensely from the physical aspects of riding as well as the confidence building and skill development inherent in this activity. Some camps and stables focus on helping patients thrive through equine efforts.

Horseback riding can teach children important life lessons, and young riders receive the same benefits as adults. Skills that are learned while riding horses can spill into daily life—skills like leadership, teamwork, cooperation, problem-solving, communication, and analytical skills. Horses have to be groomed and fed, which gives children responsibility. Grooming can be a wonderful bonding experience, but it’s also important to the horse’s health.

Experiencing an equestrian event can be fun and exciting. If you’re in the Omaha area, you can enjoy Urban Equine Events, which are scheduled beginning in April through the beginning of September. You can find more information at urbanequinenvents.com

Millions worldwide gravitate toward horseback riding, and it’s easy to see why. Horses are magnificent creatures! They may not be cuddly critters, but they can become best friends, partners, and instruments of personal growth.

The World is About to End, Again

Market Prognostication

According to a small gaggle of self-appointed fortune tellers in the financial media, the market is on the verge of a horrific collapse, hurling all non-believers into a fiery pit. The cause of this rapidly approaching market apocalypse is the S&P 500’s concentration in the Magnificent Seven: Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla. Last year, more than half of the S&P 500’s 26 percent gain came from these seven companies.

I am not now, nor will I ever be, a market predictor. But I am mesmerized by those who claim to be. As Abe Lincoln said, “You can fool some of the people all the time, and all the people some of the time, and that’s enough to make a decent living.”

This brings back memories of financial forecaster Joe Granville. Every year from 1970 to 1989, he predicted that the market was on the verge of a meltdown of epic proportions. On Black Monday in 1989, the market dropped 34 percent in two hours, allowing Granville to proclaim to the investing public, “Told ya so!!” This was his first, last, and only moment in the sun.

Market concentration in a small number of companies is nothing new. The original Dow Jones Industrial Average consisted of just 12 stocks, all of them railroad companies. In the decade leading up to the Crash of 1929, Wall Street banks constituted 37 percent of the market’s total value. In the early 1990s, Coca Cola, Phillip Morris, American Express, and General Motors dominated the indexes and created one of history’s most powerful bull markets. In the early 2000s, the market soared, powered by the internet pioneers Google, Microsoft, and Intel.

The point that all these near-sighted forecasters miss is the way that indexes are constructed and maintained. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq are weighted by a company’s total market value. This means that the companies with the highest market cap have a disproportionate influence on the index’s movement.

But as a company’s stock price fluctuates, so does its market value. On a regular basis, the companies that manufacture the S&P and Nasdaq adjust a stock’s weighting in order to reflect its current market value. Thus, when one company stumbles, another takes its place at the head of the pack. This, in theory, cushions the market from a single company’s meltdown.

Another index characteristic overlooked by the aforementioned fortune tellers is the fact that stock returns are skewed to the upside. Losers can only go to zero, while winners can grow to infinity. It’s not a market negative for breakthrough companies to grow at double-digit or even triple-digit rates.

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal provided a comment which I think brings this discussion to a rational conclusion. And I quote, “the only sensible conclusion is that there is no specific level of concentration at which the biggest stocks are so big that they send the risk sky high.”

In the midst of this kerfuffle, another group of Wall Street mavens dove down a rabbit hole and concluded that the long-dormant value investor approach is on its way back to

its proper position as the crown jewel of investment methodologies. According to this group, value investing fell out of favor because its practitioners (including their fearless leader, Warren Edward Buffett) focused on the wrong financial data points.

This group of mental giants claims that replacing a company’s intrinsic value with its level of free cash generation will return value investors back to their exalted position at the top of the stock picking pyramid. Translation: Value investing never died…we just changed everything but the name.

So, in the immortal words of Butch Cassidy, “Who are these guys?” According to the Wall Street Journal, in 2023, a small group of money managers launched seven exchange-traded funds (ETFs) based on the “new value investing formula.” To date, the new wave of value investing funds has attracted $25 billion in assets. An amount that size would hardly cause a ripple in the trillion-dollar S&P 500 ETF pond. For the past two years, the new value investing funds have collectively averaged 15.7 percent, compared to the S&P 500 average of 25.3 percent.

This is kind of like an ice cream shop that runs out of vanilla and so promotes chocolate as the “new and improved” vanilla.

Over the course of my five decades as a market watcher, I have seen a gazillion episodes of magic formula gyrations and prognostications come and go. But, in spite of all the hyperbole that Wall Street and their media lackies can generate, there remains one true cornerstone to successful investing: No matter who you are, never bet against the powerful American economic engine.

Hydrangeas

Garden Stunners

Is there anything more stunning in a garden than the showy and impressive blooms of hydrangeas?

Probably not! The ability they have to produce flowers in shades of purple, blue, pink, and white is astounding. Hydrangeas are right up there with roses as my favorites. If you look at many a bouquet, you will see that the two species look flawless together.

Although hydrangeas are known for their great adaptability and awe-striking blooms, they can be somewhat intimidating to seasoned gardeners and novices alike. They usually flourish in partial sun and well-drained soils and are suitable for most every climate in the US with the exception of far northern states.

One of the first things to know about hydrangea care is that you must water them deeply and regularly, especially in hot, dry weather. Second, you must ensure that the soil has plenty of drainage to prevent root rot. The easiest way to retain moisture and regulate the soil temperature is to apply mulch. I would definitely use a fertilizer that is specifically formulated for hydrangeas, but avoid over-fertilizing. Over-fertilizing can lead to lush foliage but fewer blooms. Most hydrangeas prefer partial sun, with their favorite being morning sun and afternoon shade.

There are five types of hydrangeas, and they each have their own personality. Bigleaf hydrangeas are the most common type found in home gardens. They feature two distinct

flower head shapes that are easy to spot. Mophead hydrangeas have rounded flower clusters and lace cap hydrangeas have a flatter flower formation. The flower buds form on the previous year’s growth, so the best time to prune them is in the fall, after the flowers are spent.

Panicle hydrangeas are my favorite. They are easy to identify by their cone-shaped flower clusters. The conical shape of these blooms provides such a dramatic display throughout the summer and into the fall. Panicle blooms transition from lime green to a brilliant, gorgeous white. Happily, they have the ability to tolerate more sun than other hydrangea types.

The best time to prune panicle hydrangeas is in late winter or early spring, before any new leaves have time to emerge. The timing on this pruning is pretty important, since panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood, which means they produce flowers on the current season’s growth. These are my favorite hydrangeas because they’re easy to grow and look spectacular in a hedgerow or as the focal point of a garden.

Since working with Women’s Edition, my call volume has increased exponentially in just a matter of months. The customers reaching out to me fit my target market and are quick to share with me where they saw my ad. Women’s Edition took the time to get to know me and understand my needs in reaching out to, and connecting with, the right customer. Advertising in Women’s Edition is producing results even faster than expected!

3 Day Kitchen & Bath Authorized Dealer

Oakleaf hydrangeas are named for their distinctive oak-shaped leaves. This is one of the earliest blooming hydrangeas, often flowering in June and ending in July. These flowers bloom on old wood and range in color from white to cream to pink. These are very well-suited for shade gardens. To get the best results, you should prune them immediately after flowering by removing their spent flower heads.

There is also a climbing form of hydrangea. It has aerial roots that allow the plant to climb and attach to surfaces such as walls, fences, and other structures. Climbing hydrangeas should be pruned right after flowering to maintain their shape and size without sacrificing next year’s blooms.

Of course, you’ll need to do some troubleshooting sooner or later. If your hydrangea isn’t blooming, it could be reacting to improper pruning or over-fertilization with high-nitrogen fertilizers. It could be getting too much sun…or not enough sun. Or it could be something as simple as a late spring frost that damaged new buds. They can also be subject to a few common pests such as aphids, spider mites, or scale insects.

Regular inspection and prompt treatment with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil can help keep pest problems under control. If your hydrangeas develop yellow or brown leaves, it could indicate overwatering or poor drainage. It could also be sunburn or nutrient deficiencies. Keep a close eye on your plants and adjust watering practices or improve soil drainage as soon as you notice an issue.

Something unique about hydrangeas is their super-sticky pollen. It is difficult for wind to blow the pollen around, making these flowers perfect for allergy-prone gardeners. They are also fragrance free, which makes them a great addition for those of us who are headache prone or have very sensitive noses. Another fun fact about hydrangeas is that they don’t have petals. It may look like hydrangeas have tons of petals, but these petal-like structures are actually called sepals. They are small leaves that protect the flower bud. A sepal’s color is influenced by the pH level and the presence of aluminum in the soil in which the hydrangeas are planted. (Alkaline soil leads to pink sepals; acidic soil leads to blue.) Fascinating and enchanting!

Sunny Spring Breaks for Families

Mexico & the Caribbean

Spring break is coming. Are you ready for a vacation?

I am sure the kids would love one. How can you book a fun and relaxing getaway for all the members of your family (including yourself) without stressing out about the plans? By choosing an all-inclusive resort, of course! Even easier is booking through your travel agent. Why not take a break and head to a sunny destination with a beautiful beach? Spring is a great time to go, with lots of options for every taste, budget, and family dynamic. Sometimes too many choices makes it hard to decide. Let’s narrow it down to Mexico and the Caribbean.

If you opt for Mexico, look into the States of Puerto Vallarta, Nayarit, and Quintana Roo. These include popular spots like Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, and Playa Nayarit, just to name a few. This area of the country is often described as “the paradise of Mexico,” and it’s not hard to see why. Enjoy the beautiful blue waters and white sandy beaches. If you want to venture outside of the resort, you can explore tropical jungles, beautiful cenotes, and breathtaking Mayan historical sites.

Families with young children, listen up: Nickelodeon Riviera Maya opened in 2021. Families will love this property! The kids can enjoy Aqua Nick, the six-acre Nickelodeon-themed water park that features meet-ups with kids’ favorite characters. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the five-star treatment you’ve been craving. They’ll be thrilled by the cool room décor, and you’ll love the extra space that the suites afford. There’s something for all of you!

If you’d prefer to travel to the Caribbean, consider staying at Beaches Resorts. These all-inclusive family resorts have locations in Jamaica and Turks and Caicos. As you’d expect, the price includes lodging, food, and drink. What may surprise you is that the price also includes unlimited WiFi, land and water sports like scuba diving and golf green fees, airport transfers, and even gratuities. Pay once when you book, and you do not have to worry about a thing when you arrive.

The Turks and Caicos resort has their own enormous Pirates Island waterpark, complete with lazy river and Surf Simulator, 12-mile beach, and 10 pools! For those who love to get in the water and stay in, this is the place to go. Beaches has kid camp programs for infants through 12 years old that keep the younger set entertained and safe while the grownups take some time for themselves. If your older kids are more active, they can participate in the Kids Scuba Program. When they need a break from underwater adventures, they can hit the arcade and kids’ lounge. The resort has plenty of included options and activities to entertain the whole family.

Fancy Jamaica for your spring getaway to the beach?

Beaches Negril is set on Jamaica’s renowned seven-mile beach. Their property is adding 12 new and expansive butler suites. Six of these will be Firesky Reserve Villas, which have four bedrooms over three stories, to accommodate up to 10 guests. The other six are under the Eventide Penthouse Collection; they have three or four bedrooms each and can accommodate up to 18 guests. Booking one of these private residences gets you and your guests full butler service, a private courtyard, and a private pool. You will enjoy stunning views of the Caribbean Sea from your own private rooftop deck. Bring the extended family and be one of the first to stay at this new paradise! There is room for everyone.

With multigenerational travel becoming ever more popular, Beaches is a great option for everybody to stay together in one place but still have enough space and freedom to do what they want. Now, that’s a vacation! You can also keep it in mind for a trip with family friends or a girls’ getaway. One more thing about Beaches that impressed me is that they have the Caribbean’s first autism-friendly kids camp, as well as low-sensory areas or zones at each resort. These features really show thoughtfulness for families who want all their members to be able to relax on vacation.

Talk to your travel agent, narrow down your choices, and get something planned now. Booking an all-inclusive resort in Mexico or the Caribbean is time and money well spent. We all need vacations, including our families. Take them on one that will nurture a love of traveling and create memories for a lifetime. Add in a sandy beach, some water sports, unlimited dining, and beautiful weather…I’m sold!

Nebraska State Historical Society

Offering History in All Shapes and Sizes

“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” This statement from Martin Luther King Jr. reminds us that the past shapes us all. Through history we learn who we are, where we came from, and, potentially, where we are headed. In Nebraska, we are fortunate to have an organization that collects, preserves, and disseminates the stories that Nebraskans share. It is called the Nebraska State Historical Society.

The group was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized that Nebraska was going through great changes. They sought to record the stories of both the indigenous and immigrant peoples who lived there. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. It was known for some time as History Nebraska but has reverted to its original name.

“We pride ourselves on being available to anyone who is interested in Nebraska history,” says Director of Operations and Nebraska native Chris Goforth. “We have a vast network of sites and opportunities to learn about history, both in person and digitally. Our services include archaeology, collections, digital curation, publications, managing numerous historical sites and museums, identifying and maintaining historical markers, and much more.”

The agency is in the early stages of a five-year project to develop new, comprehensive exhibits of Nebraska history at the museum in Lincoln. “Education is a huge component of what we do,” Chris notes. “Our on-site field trips and award-winning virtual programs are extremely popular.”

The home office is in Lincoln, but there are sites, museums, and historical venues all over the state! In Lincoln, their historical sites include the Thomas Kennard House and the Nebraska History Museum. Thomas Kennard was Nebraska’s first Secretary of State, and his house is the oldest remaining structure in the original housing plat of Lincoln. The Nebraska History Museum covers 2,000 years of history with over 125,000 historical objects. It is a popular destination for school field trips.

In Omaha, Nebraska State Historical Society manages the Ford Conservation Center adjacent to Gerald Ford’s home. The staff there provides conservation services and historical item consultation to individuals, museums, libraries, corporations, and government agencies.

In the northeastern part of the state, you’ll find the John C. Neihardt Home in Bancroft. It houses exhibits and a library of works by Nebraska’s first poet laureate. In Neligh, you can walk through the Neligh flour mill to see how flour was produced with water power in the late 19th century. Head to the northwest corner of the state to visit Fort Robinson and see artifacts from its active period (from the

mid 19th century through World War II). Out in the panhandle, you can visit the Chimney Rock Museum to see the landmark spire and a visitor’s center showcasing westward migration. In McCook, you can check out the preserved home of Senator George Norris, who served in the United States Congress for 40 years. Senator Norris fought to bring public power to rural Nebraska through the Rural Electrification Act.

“Bringing history to life is truly exciting,” Chris says. “Our commitment is to bring it to life in whatever way people want to consume it. Learning about history helps our society move forward. It is priceless, and we should never take it for granted.”

“We do everything we can to meet the needs of people who want to learn about Nebraska’s history,” Chris continues. “We provide historical content in print with our magazine and online through blog posts, websites, and podcasts. Our agency has the largest collection of Nebraska artifacts in the world. Anything you want to learn is available to you. Our services are for everyone.”

Nebraskans who have taken advantage of the agency’s services sing its praises. “The Nebraska History Museum does a great job with the different exhibits I have seen,” shares Travis Eubanks, a recent and repeat visitor to the Nebraska History Museum in Lincoln. “Plan on 1 or 2 hours to see what this museum has to offer.”

Lauren Thornberg visited Chimney Rock Museum and offers rave reviews. “I loved this museum! It taught me so much about the history of the Native Americans of the area and the Oregon Trail. I also think that the interactive portions of the exhibit are some of the best I’ve seen in a small museum. Even the bathroom stalls were informative!”

The Nebraska State Historical Society has an extensive website at history.nebraska.gov, which provides access to information, programs, historical site details, events, news, and much more. The main office is at 1500 R Street, in Lincoln, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can reach the agency by phone at 402-471-3270.

One Amazing Woman

Carry Your Own Bags

Baggage. We all have it. I heard a funny joke that I think most women would appreciate: A mother and daughter are boarding an airplane. The daughter asks her divorced mother, “Are you still dating that guy you met, Mom?” The mother replies, “No, he just had too much baggage.” The daughter says, “Well, Mom, you’re no carry-on yourself!” Funny? I thought so! We all have baggage, unless we are 17 years old. Of course, we thought we had baggage back then, but we just had drama. If you are older than 30 and don’t have any baggage, I believe you most likely have been living in a cave.

“Accept what is. Let go of what was. Believe in what will be.” —Anonymous

Life experience is something that I treasure. I didn’t always feel that way, but now I know that it is what has made me the person I am. I’m guessing that there are a lot of people who, if they knew my full story, would say that I have lived a challenging life. That’s most likely true, but if I had not gone through what I experienced, I would not be the person I am today…and I like who I am, most of the time.

“You are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful.” —Amy Bloom

I believe my most positive trait is my ability to let go of the past. When I reflect on who I am, I feel good when I think of everything that I have gone through. Have I faced challenges? Absolutely. Have I been wronged? You’d better believe it. Do I fully own everything that has happened in my life? Yes, as painful as that can be. My experiences have made me who I am.

I bet you’re not unlike me. You’ve had challenges. You’ve had people in your life—family, friends, employees—who have disrespected you or those you love. I hope that you have learned from your experiences and grown. I know I have.

Most of all, I hope that you have been able to forgive those who have wronged you. I hope that you are at peace with your history—it has made you who you are! My best guess? You are one amazing woman.

“In the process of letting go, you will lose many things from the past, but you will find yourself. ” —Deepak Chopra

Peak Performance

Foot Health

Putting Your Best Foot Forward

The importance of feet cannot be overstated. They support the weight of our bodies and allow us to stand, balance, and move through the world. Just like any other part of your body, your feet need care to stay healthy, active, and strong—and to prevent problems later. Many foot problems can be prevented through healthy personal hygiene and taking care of your feet.

Inspect your feet regularly, paying attention to changes in color, texture, or appearance. Maintain good foot hygiene, including washing and drying between the toes. Protect the skin on your feet the same way you protect skin all over your body, by hydrating with lotion when skin is dry and using sunblock when skin will be exposed to the sun. Keep toenails trimmed straight across to avoid ingrown toenails. If you prefer professional nail care, choose a salon that is clean and licensed by your state’s cosmetology board. Make sure the salon sterilizes instruments and tools after each use.

Choosing the right shoes is essential for maintaining the health and comfort of your feet. The wrong shoes can lead to a variety of foot problems, such as hammertoe, plantar fasciitis, and heel spurs.

Just like clothes, shoe sizing can differ from one brand to the next, so you should always try shoes on before purchasing. Choose the shoes that feel the best over the shoes that look the best. And don’t wear the same shoes day after day! No matter what shoes you wear, they will absorb moisture from your feet. It’s important that they dry out completely before you wear them again.

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing shoes is the fit. Make sure there’s at least a thumb’s width of space between the tip of your longest toe and the end of the shoe. The right shoes should also provide adequate support for your feet. This includes arch support, heel support, and cushioning to help absorb shock.

Choose your shoes based on your activities. For example, running shoes have more cushioning and support than shoes designed for sedentary activities. They are also likely made of different materials. If you have a high arch or overpronate (roll your foot inward while walking) you may need shoes with motion control to help keep your foot stable. If you choose to wear high heels, save them for special events, not everyday wear.

A good pair of shoes is an investment, so it’s worth spending a little more for a better product. A good rule of thumb is to replace your shoes every 300 to 500 miles, or every 6 to 8 months, whichever comes first. Take the time to try on shoes. Walk around the store and check for proper fit, support, and comfort. Some shoe stores employ expert staff who can help you make an appropriate selection.

Once you have the right shoes, get some moderate exercise. Walking is a great way to keep

weight under control and is an excellent conditioner for the feet. Avoid walking barefoot to help protect your feet from injury and infection. And don’t ignore foot pain! If pain persists, call a podiatrist.

A podiatrist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of foot, ankle, and lower leg problems. Podiatrists examine, diagnose, and treat a variety of foot and ankle conditions. They can prescribe medications, order lab tests, or recommend custom orthotics or shoe inserts. In some cases, they perform surgery to correct problems with the bones and soft tissues of the foot and ankle. Finally, podiatrists are invaluable in offering advice on proper foot care and footwear selection.

Podiatrists earn a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) degree from a specialized podiatric medical school. It takes four years to earn a DPM, and most podiatrists have a fouryear undergraduate degree, too. Podiatrists are qualified to diagnose and treat any issue that affects the feet, including surgical procedures.

Podiatrists can treat any common issue that affects your feet and toes, including ingrown toenails, toe deformities, foot and ankle injuries, bunions, warts, foot and ankle arthritis, skin conditions affecting the feet and toenails, diabetic foot problems, tendonitis, fractures of the foot and ankle, swelling, leg wounds, and foot and toe ulcers. If you have diabetes, a podiatrist can be your best support for foot care.

If you experience pain, discoloration or redness, swelling, a feeling of heat or warmth, or new growths or bumps on or under the skin of the foot, call your podiatrist. Don’t just start treatments at home—you could make it worse.

Self-care can’t prevent every foot problem, but it’s a great place to start!

Here’s to the Teachers

Helping Teachers, Helping Kids

Believe it or not, we will soon reach the end of the school year. Grade reports and standardized test results will be out soon if they haven’t been published already. How are your kids doing? How do your kids feel about how they’re doing? Here are some ideas that might help get them over… or out of…the slump . No matter how old your kids are, I’d like to make one suggestion to parents: Let the teachers take the lead.

Why? First of all, teachers have been trained to teach. Their area of expertise is teaching itself! Most of us have been through many years of school, but most of us aren’t teachers. Like many jobs, teaching looks easy. It’s different from the other side of the desk.

Second, not all kids learn in the same way. Teachers have been given the tools to work with an entire room full of young individuals. Most parents don’t have the same training or tools, including the teacher’s manual, to work with. This can be confusing for kids. I remember my dad trying to help me with long division. He used different terms than my teacher had used, and I got so frustrated I cried. If we can avoid that kind of parent/child stress, I think we should! Teachers are trained in different approaches and methods.

For example, the philosophy of how kids can best learn to read swings, like a pendulum, from Phonics, to Whole Word, to Word Recognition, to the Science of Reading, and back again. I don’t suggest any one practice or method because I believe all are valid tools for teachers to have in their tool box as they try to meet students where they are.

Math is no different. Remember “new math”? One of the first things I would do when tutoring a student in math was ask how their teacher told them to do the problem. Then we’d proceed with them doing it “their way” and me doing it “the old way” and then comparing answers. If they were the same, no problem; if different, we’d examine each procedure to find out where something went wrong. Finally, we’d check with a calculator…sometimes, both of us were wrong, and then we had a new problem.

There are lots of ways that parents can help their kids succeed in school. Ask the kids what they’ve been learning about. Set up an area for doing homework that is well-lit, quiet, and equipped with everything the kids will need for their studies. Kids can help choose what they want or what they think will help them the most…especially in the areas where they feel they need the most help. Kids are people, too. They know themselves pretty well!

Windshields

Protection You Don’t Even See

Oh, there is nothing like a road trip!

It is one of life’s greatest pleasures to just take off and leave the world behind. That is, until a rock hits your windshield and brings you quickly back to reality. Nothing like the sound of cracking glass to bring you to attention!

My husband and I learned about shatter-proof windshields up close when we took a road trip halfway across the country. We came home with a giant crack in our windshield. Whatever flew up and hit us made a long crack across the glass, and I could only think of how lucky we were that the glass was shatter-proof!

We had no choice but to replace the entire windshield, but this is not true for every case of windshield damage. That doesn’t mean you should ignore a small crack! Even the smallest of chips in your windshield can expand rather quickly into a crack that threatens visibility and structural integrity.

However it happened and no matter how small the chip or crack is, it should be fixed right away by a professional. If you do not address it, contaminants and dirt and moisture will eventually seep in between the layers of glass, which can lead to bad visibility and even fogging. I don’t think I need to remind you that good visibility while driving is a definite requirement.

A word to the wise: Do not try to repair the windshield yourself—unless you’re willing to sacrifice your warranty. Your work will likely void the warranty, which will be a real bummer when it comes time for a professional to repair the job you did. An auto glass restorer has the tools, resin, and expertise to fix that chip the right way. The watertight seal from the resin stops a chip in its tracks, preventing further damage.

It can be hard to find time to make it to the shop for what seems like such a small issue. To solve this problem, many auto glass repair companies will come to you at home or work and fix the chip on site.

How does insurance play into this scenario? If you have comprehensive coverage, windshield repair or replacement is mostly likely covered by your policy. Some insurance companies also offer a full glass coverage add-on. A replacement windshield often costs a few to several hundred dollars. At that price point, many people decide to pay the cost out of pocket instead of risking a higher premium after a claim.

If you choose to file a claim, your insurance company will provide referrals to repair shops. Keep in mind that you do not need to use a shop that your insurance company recommends—you choose where to repair your glass.

As long as we’re talking about auto glass, let’s take a look

at window tinting. Heat-blocking films for car windows easily reduce the UV rays and the heat that comes through the glass. Tinting helps keep the car cooler whether you are in it or not. It also reduces glare, which can become a safety issue anytime you are driving.

There are different types of window tints, so ask your auto glass specialist which one is right for your circumstances. Overly tinted windows can reduce visibility, so make sure to check your local regulations and be safe. Different states have different laws about the amount of tinting permitted on a vehicle. Restrictions can vary even from window to window.

Windshields are damaged every day, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that yours will be! A windshield that never takes a hit should last the life of the car. Windshield wiper blades, on the other hand, should be replaced every 6 to twelve months. Boy, am I late to that party! If you’ve ever driven in the pouring rain with worn-out wipers, you know how scary it can be.

Those of us who drive in the winter should consider “winter wipers.” These bad boys have an extra layer of synthetic rubber that allows them to stay soft without tearing…brilliant!

For warmer inclement weather, we can take advantage of a rain-repellant coating that is applied directly to the windshield. It makes the rain bead up and roll right off the glass. There is a hydrophobic coating which uses titanium oxide to prevent water from bonding to glass. There is also a product called Rain-X that creates a non-stick barrier to repel water. Besides improved visibility, these treatments reduce glare and make driving in extreme weather conditions safer.

When it comes to keeping your windshield in shape for a drive, there’s no one better to turn to than an auto glass professional. Here’s to safe driving!

Roeder Mortuaries

Experience You Can Trust!

How do you help people who are going through one of the most trying times of their lives? Brian Roeder knows just how difficult it is to comfort loved ones left behind after a death, and his compassion and consideration for families go the extra mile. Brian is the fourth-generation funeral director and president/owner of Roeder Mortuaries, and family traditions are very important to him.

Before he decided to be part of the family business, Brian joined the military—he needed some structure in his life and he wanted to explore the world. While he was away, he realized that the Roeder family business in Omaha is where he belongs. He likes to say that it is his “servant heart” that drives him to care for people. It is imperative to Brian to meet the needs of families who come to Roeder Mortuaries in their time of need. Whether it is helping them navigate their grieving process, helping them plan the service, or just being present with a kind

heart, you can count on Brian and his staff to be there.

We all know that we will need these services one day, but most of us know nothing about the process and are woefully inexperienced with funerals. That is where Brian and his staff can help. They are experts and are dedicated to seeing everyone through their time of need. They can also help with an increasingly popular type of funeral planning: pre-planning your own service.

Brian Roeder, President/Owner

Some people choose to put their loved ones’ minds at ease by making advance funeral arrangements for themselves. “Many people do not want to talk about this subject because they do not want to think about it,” Brian acknowledges. “It is so much better for everyone, however, to make final plans.” These plans, he says, can be as detailed as you choose, from putting in writing what you want for your funeral service to paying for everything ahead of time at today’s prices. Some pre-planning documents can include everything from music selections to readings—anything you want at your service to help your family celebrate your life.

Many times, family members gather after the death of a loved one and are completely lost as to what to do for their funeral. Speaking from experience, I think pre-planning is an excellent and very thoughtful idea. Imagine the stress that would be lifted if the plans were made in advance.

There are many aspects to a funeral, and Brian is well aware that not every option is a good fit for every family. These days, there are different options to meet the needs of different families. These include traditional funerals, memorials, and graveside services. A traditional funeral service memorializes a deceased person with the body present. A memorial service is an event that takes place without the body present, and a graveside service can happen either on its own or after a funeral service.

You can also combine any type of service with a cremation. According to Brian, cremations are becoming much more common. You could have a traditional funeral before a cremation or

a memorial service can take place after a cremation. A person can also choose to have the remains returned to them without a service.

Whatever is chosen, services have changed a great deal over the last 20 years or so. The biggest change, Brian says, is how very personalized they have become. Roeder Mortuaries are flexible and strive to create a meaningful service that is customized for each individual. Brian never loses sight of the fact that he and his staff have been honored with the task of helping people through a very difficult time in their lives.

What exactly makes an excellent mortuary? You want to be confident about the care and the service you receive, so it’s wise to select a mortuary with an outstanding reputation. You want to make sure that they have a compassionate and caring staff and that you are treated with the utmost kindness. With that kindness should come authentic sincerity and excellent customer service. You also need a mortuary that is committed to families and is eager to create a meaningful and unique experience for you and your family. Transparency about costs is an absolute must—there should be no hidden fees or agendas.

Roeder Mortuaries check all of these boxes and then some. You can truly trust them to guide you through the most trying of times. Roeder Mortuaries serve our community at three locations: the Ames Ave Chapel (4932 Ames Avenue), the 108th Chapel (2727 North 108th Street), and the Gretna Chapel (11710 Standing Stone Drive). Spring & Summer Celebrations

Ideas for Stress-Free

Planning

As spring and summer approach, we look forward to warmer weather, vibrant blooms, and returning to outdoor activities. These seasons are filled with graduation parties, showers, weddings, anniversary celebrations, and reunions. Are you planning to host a special event soon? If you’re considering a celebration, read on!

Start by making some basic decisions about the formality and style of your event. Do you want a formal gathering, a casual get-together, or an open house-style event? Do you prefer a plated meal, buffet, or finger foods? Will the event be held indoors or outdoors? Will you have entertainment or music? Defining these details will streamline the planning process and help you organize a successful event.

If you’re not sure what you want, exploring current party trends may help. Popular 2025 party trends include themed dinner parties, balloon décor, interactive foods, and sophisticated mocktails.

It’s important to establish a budget and allocate funds for categories like venue rental, food, decorations, entertainment, party favors, and other expenses. Keep track of your spending to adjust amounts if costs or priorities change.

Unless you are hosting at home, you must find a suitable venue. When exploring options, make sure that the space aligns with your needs, accommodates your guest list, and matches your desired theme and style. What services are included? Is there ample parking? If you want to hire outside vendors, like a caterer or entertainer, confirm that the venue allows them.

Be sure you understand the contract details before signing anything. First, ensure the venue is available on your desired date. Inquire about the required deposit and deposit refund policy. Find out if there are additional charges for things you may need, like lighting, audiovisual equipment, and sound systems. Are there fees for staffing or security personnel? What are the payment terms and cancellation policy? When can you access the venue to set up? Ask whether you will have exclusive access to the venue for your event. Questions like these will help you avoid unexpected issues or expenses.

Once you’ve secured a venue, the next major consideration is food and drink. There are many important questions to ask a potential caterer, starting with whether they are available on your desired date. What are the deposit requirements and cancellation policy? Find out if they do sit-down meals or buffets to ensure they can meet your expectations. What is the staff-to-guest ratio? Dress code? What does the per-person price include? Caterers charge differently, so finding out if you will pay extra for things like servers, transport, corkage, and cleaning is essential. Find out who your contact person will be during your event.

Perhaps you have decided to host your event at home. Entertaining at home is popular, and careful planning reduces stress. The key is realizing that you do not have to do everything yourself. Make a list of what needs to be done and ask family and friends to help. Purchase some readymade items. Party rental companies can provide things like tables and chairs, dinnerware, servingware, lighting, and games. Renting needed items can save time and money. Do what you can beforehand so you can enjoy the party.

Other ways to simplify entertaining include mixing a big batch of a signature cocktail before the party (and offering a non-alcoholic version). Serve food buffet style so you don’t have to spend much time in the kitchen. If children will be present, set up a designated kids’ area indoors and outdoors, if possible. Set up a DIY cocktail, coffee, or hot chocolate bar.

Fun theme ideas for entertaining at home include an ice cream social, wine and cheese happy hour, brunch buffet, outdoor movie, indoor game night, or open house. Weather permitting, grill some meats and ask guests to bring a side dish or dessert. Keeping things simple and organized allows you to relax and enjoy time with your family and friends.

Further simplify planning by hiring a food truck to serve the guests at your gathering. Many food trucks cater, and there are a variety of options. Choose from foods like burgers, barbeque, and pizza. Ethnic cuisine options include Mexican, Italian, African, Greek, and more. Sweet options include donuts, brownies, churros, ice cream, ice pops, and Hawaiian shaved ice. Some food trucks offer beverages like local beers and brews, specialty cocktails, coffee, smoothies, and juices.

Whether your upcoming event will be large or small, advance planning and organization are the keys to success. With so many options to simplify entertaining, you can host and enjoy a memorable event while spending time with friends and loved ones.

The Niceties of Life Manners vs. Etiquette

When was the last time someone held a door open for you? If you remember the event, you probably welcomed the gracious act.“Is chivalry dead?”you may ask. Gracious acts are not completely a thing of the past, but they do seem to occur less frequently. Good manners really are the glue that holds society together. Akin to diplomacy, well-polished manners make everyone feel better. They lighten up even the most tense situations, and they offer the opportunity for all of us to think more clearly and behave more charitably.

The difference between manners and etiquette is somewhat similar to the comparison between wit and humor. Wit is a “right now at the moment” type of thing, while humor is long-lasting. In wit, a topic might be funny today, but it falls flat on its face as time passes. With humor, the subject is always topical and relevant, both now and in the far future. Good manners are pleasing at the moment, but etiquette is a long-term lifestyle—it’s a fashion that never seems to lose its potency. The need for good etiquette, with its elements of style, respect, consideration, and loads of honesty, never changes. Without the underpinning of these ethics, society might just become tumultuous.

Manners are a good habit; etiquette is a way of life. Naysayers seem to believe that good manners and etiquette alike have flown out the window, and they blame it on our recent tech-based forms of communication. There is some truth in the belief that when we don’t communicate face to face that it is easy to forego the pleasantries and niceties of life. Although I am no Emily Post, I enjoy polished manners and impeccable etiquette. However, I once committed a horrific etiquette crime by typing an e-mail in ALL CAPS and in large font, unknowingly insulting my reader. ALL CAPS and large font translate into electronic screaming and display rudeness. My true intention was to create a document in large print so my visually challenged coworker could more easily read it. Upon discovering my error, apologies followed.

Whether or not we intend to insult, good manners offer the opportunity for a swift and heartfelt apology. Fortunately, my “victim” accepted my apology with good grace.

When we think of good manners, the first civilities that come to mind are “please,”“thank you,”“excuse me,’’ and “you’re welcome.” These niceties are learned during childhood and are the building blocks of politeness. Today, it is not uncommon to hear phrases such as “You need to…’’ or “You must…’’ instead of “please,’’ but please and thank you always garner such wonderful results. Without them, requests sound more like orders from some power-crazy sergeant! “Excuse me’’ or “pardon me” erases many social sins, ranging from barging in front of someone else to committing a verbal affront. Good etiquette would never allow such a blunder.

There really is no method to cover up the use of bad manners or thoughtless expressions. Saying the wrong thing and attempting originality have become very common but still

The need for good etiquette, with its elements of style, respect, consideration, and loads of honesty, never changes.

remain inappropriate and often hurtful. Many bereaved people have been told. “It’s for the best,’’ which almost trumps “She’s in a better place now” in rude sympathy. No amount of polished manners, good etiquette, or fast talking can get you out of this jam! Maybe your intention is sincere, but speaking in platitudes when offering sympathy, giving unwarranted advice, or presenting personal compliments is a dangerous and unforgivable practice.

Euphemisms are always offensive, harsh, and too blunt for any situation. Again, although the intention is not to be rude, there is no room in etiquette for practiced phrases. They simply are not hon estly offered, and they will always be accepted grudgingly. Euphemisms are always dropped into our laps during life’s most delicate moments.

Compliments are a form of tribute for all forms of good judgment, new apparel, weight loss, and changes in lifestyle. For many of us, giving and accepting compli ments is tricky and is often not very sat isfying. Those offering compliments often resent the fact that they have not properly charmed their recipient. To volunteer a compliment can be scary, especially if it is not offered in a favorable manner. “You look terrific,” is a delightful compliment. “You look terrific. Have you had some work done on your nose?” is not a delightful compli ment. “That’s a beautiful suit,” is appreci ated. “That’s a beautiful suit. How much did it cost you?” will not be appreciated.

Silence and insincere compliments are not using good manners. On the other hand, many of us do not appreciate comments on our personal grooming habits, such as changing our hairdo or buying new glasses. Good com mon sense and an honest endorsement of your relationship with your coworker or friend before speaking up is the best policy in these situations.

The Roof Over Your Head Have Your Checked Yours Lately?

When was the last time you really looked at your roof? Most home roofs can last up to 30 years in ideal conditions. In real-life Nebraska, with frequent extreme weather, the lifetime of a roof can be closer to 15 years or fewer. Simply put: If you didn’t buy your home new, and you haven’t replaced your roof already since you moved in, you should take a look at getting a new roof.

How can you tell if roof replacement is overdue? Some signs to look for are buckled or curled shingles, rusted roof valleys, missing shingles or tiles, gaps in chimney flashing, and moss growth. If you can see daylight through the roof boards, it’s time to make the call.

Perhaps your roof has some wear and tear but no extreme damage. Before you put off a new roof till next year, consider this: a new roof can increase your home’s value and decrease your insurance costs at the same time! Between the increased value of your home and the energy savings through more efficient heating and cooling, a basic new roof can see a 60 to 70 percent return on investment.

Replacing your roof before it’s damaged is also a great way to lower your insurance premiums. This only works if you’re voluntarily replacing your roof as part of regular upkeep. If a storm forces your hand, you won’t be eligible for the same discounts. Many homeowners’ insurance policies

Outdoor Living

won’t even cover roofs older than 20 years, so it’s really best to get it replaced sooner rather than later.

Fortunately, this is a great time to start looking to replace your roof! The ideal time to install a new roof is autumn. If you start looking now, you’ll have all the decisions made and appointments booked before the first leaf falls. We are living in a time with great advances in roofing technology and materials, so you’ve got more options than ever to choose from!

This year, the roofing industry is seeing an increased demand for eco-friendly, sustainable roofing materials such as recycled polyurethane or even “living roofs” and rooftop gardens that help manage heat absorption and rainwater. Roofing companies also have more advanced technology at their disposal, with things like drone inspections to reduce the danger of job-related injuries, AI-powered design tools, and roofing tiles with solar power integration.

If you’re looking for a new roof that will resist hail,

StruXure Pergolas—These feature a fully-automated, watertight louvered roof with all-aluminum construction.  The structure, design, and functionality of these are unmatched in the industry.

Progressive Screens—Powered on a self-tensioning magnetic track, they will protect from sun, wind, and insects. A variety of transparency levels are available to offer visibility or privacy.

you’re in luck! Asphalt shingles are a classic choice that can be purchased in impact-resistant options. Alternatively, slate or tile roofs are known for their resilience and longevity. Rubber “EuroShield” and the synthetic alternatives (such as synthetic slate) are engineered to be impact resistant while imitating a more natural aesthetic. The toughest option available, though, is class 4 hail-resistant metal roofing. These metal roofs are designed to withstand hail up to two inches in diameter.

A new roof is nothing without a warranty to guarantee its quality. When looking at roof warranties, you’re going to see two types: a material warranty (which guarantees the quality of the tiles or shingles) and a workmanship warranty. You’ll want both types of warranties to guarantee that the materials of your roof as well as the labor and installation meet a minimum standard of quality.

A roof replacement project is also a great opportunity to look into getting your gutters replaced (or, at the very least, inspected). While it isn’t required to replace gutters every time you replace your roof, many homeowners will opt to have both projects done at the same time. Since gutters will also typically last around 20 years before they need to be replaced, it may be time to get a new set for your house, anyway.

Gutters usually come in two styles: half-round and k-style. Half-round style gutters are lightweight, easy to clean, and require simple installation. K-style gutters are a bit harder to maintain and install but can handle a much larger water flow.

Gutters also come in a variety of materials, such as aluminum, vinyl, copper, zinc, and steel, and they can come as a pre-made seamed style or a seamless style (which requires custom installation). Gutter guards or leaf guards are a common add-on accessory that many homeowners choose to reduce yearly maintenance and cleaning.

Whether you decide to get your whole roof and gutter system replaced with new, top-of-the-line materials or you just need a straightforward replacement, getting a new roof and gutters can keep your home value up and insurance down. It’s an easy choice! Sources for this article included: kin. com, becn.com, and bmroofing.com.

Meet The Grout Doctor!

Breathe New Life Into Old Tile

If you think your old, dingy grout is beyond help, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you learn from The Grout Doctor. Frank Allen has been the owner of The Grout Doctor in Omaha for 16 years, and he has thrilled many customers by restoring existing grout to its natural beauty for a fraction of what it would cost to replace it. He’s our local Grout Doctor!

The process of restoring the grout on a tiled floor depends on the floor, how the floor was put in, and what kind of grout was used. If the tile has been mistreated over the years, it may take a bit more work to restore. “We can clean it up and make it look new, or we can re-color the grout to bring it back to what it’s supposed to look like,” says Frank. “Restoration costs a fraction of the cost for a new floor. We can make a floor look new for less than it would cost to buy just the tile.”

Frank says it takes only a few hours to restore a bathroom floor, and most kitchen floors take about three to four hours. Generally, it’s a one-day process. “I come in, clean it, color seal it, and you’re back on it,” he says.

Years before he became The Grout Doctor, Frank and his wife, Jennifer, re-tiled a floor in their own home. When it turned out great, Frank moved on to the backsplash. Another good result proved his talent. In 2008, Frank witnessed job cuts at his employer. With young children, he worried about the future, so he researched jobs that he had more control over. After he received lots of support from The Grout Doctor, he started his own franchise and never looked back. Lucky for us!

“We

helps, but water will slowly get through everything. It does what it wants and goes where it wants.”

His advice is to keep your shower clean and ventilated. Don’t shut the doors after a shower, and leave the shower curtains pulled back to let the humidity out. Use a squeegee on the shower walls every day, and wash the shower at least once a month.

can take care of any tile in the house. Floors, showers, backsplashes—anything that has caulking and grout, we can fix!”

Grout deteriorates so gradually that you might not even realize it’s happening. “People move into a home, and the previous owners might say it’s been cleaned,” Frank says. “No one has any idea that the grouts are not supposed to be that color.”

Grout that is deteriorating only gets worse over time, Frank notes, especially in the shower. When edges of the tile look like the grout has recessed, it’s time to address the damage before it gets worse. He recalls a story from a homeowner who kneeled down to clean their shower floor and their knee pushed right through the shower wall—the result of water collecting behind the wall.

“Water gets into everything,” Frank warns. “If showers aren’t maintained or you allow the caulking to erode over the years, they can be a real challenge to fix. Some people let it go and think it will be fine if the shower is waterproof. That

The Grout Doctor sells their own cleaning products, which are tried and true, but Frank says you can buy a cleaner from any retail store, as long as you know what you’re buying and how to use it. He does not recommend “spray it and forget about it” cleaners. “Never spray on a cleaner and leave it,” Frank says. “Make sure you clean it, rinse it down, and wipe it down. Don’t use Mr. Clean or bleach on your tile. It will dissolve the grout!”

One of Frank’s favorite things to do is color seal floors. “I love it when we do a color seal on a floor. The original floor might look horrible when I walk in; within a couple of hours, that floor looks new. More often than not, I get comments like, ‘I don’t know why we waited so long,’ or ‘I thought this would cost more.’ People are so happy with it!”

About 80 percent of Frank’s business is word of mouth, and he holds himself responsible for everything. “If there’s a problem, I take care of it. Thank goodness I don’t have to do that very often!” Frank says. “We can take care of any tile in the house. Floors, showers, backsplashes—anything that has caulking and grout, we can fix!”

Let’s Make Others’ Souls Blossom!

Decide to Be Happy

“Don’t worry. Be happy.” —Bobby McFerrin

I remember when this song hit the charts in 1988. I was 32 years old. Women’s Edition was only 2 years old—just a “baby” in the business world. I was working 18-hour days, seven days a week. The first time I heard that song, I laughed out loud. I remember thinking, “That’s easy for him to say.” Looking back on it, it was great advice. It still is great advice!

“Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.”

I have come to realize that deciding to be happy is the vital first step to creating the lives we all say we want to have. Want a great marriage? Do you think your mate really wants to spend all day with a sourpuss? Want a terrific career? How many successful businesspeople do you know who are negative or seem depressed? Want your kids to grow up happy? What kind of behavior are you modeling for them? Want to have a few very close great friends? Would you want to hang out with someone who rarely has anything positive to say?

“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”

What I have learned over the years is that when I “get happy,” things go much more smoothly in my life. The traffic moves, the day flows, my interactions with others are fun, entertaining, and productive. I come home with energy to accomplish some projects at home. I sleep well at night. I wake up with a smile on my face and I am ready to face the day.

“If you want to be happy, do not dwell in the past, do not worry about the future, focus on living fully in the present.”

Living “in the now” is a concept that can be a true challenge in this day and age. We are bombarded by the negatives. Look at the notifications on your phone. Listen to the radio. Turn on the TV. “If it bleeds, it leads,” as they say. Deciding to go down a different path takes a conscious decision to look at all we have to be grateful for…right here, right now. Then?

Follow Mark Twain’s advice:

“The best way to cheer yourself is to try to cheer someone else up.”—Mark Twain

Trust me. It works. Don’t worry. Be happy!
