Happy New Year, all!

I

t’s time to write down our New Year’s resolutions… or perhaps I should say…it’s time to recycle them.

Many of us use this time of year to set goals for ourselves that are meant to make our next year better than the previous one. Let’s face it…sometimes we achieve our goals, and other times we don’t. The good news is that at least we keep trying.

Every year, I make it a point to mix it up…to come up with a new resolution that I have never set before. So I am always alert to ideas that help me find something a little different (and also that I feel I can achieve).

I have a friend who signed up for a daily Advent calendar that gives her suggestions to work on for the day. She shared with me one of the suggestions: Before we speak something out loud, we should ask ourselves, “Is it kind? Is it necessary? Is it true?” I have been reflecting on this all day. So often, I hear words come out of other people’s mouths (and my own, at times) that are not kind, are not necessary, and sometimes are not even true.

I don’t believe that people intentionally try to be mean to one another. Sometimes, we simply speak before we think.

Then I remembered this famous quote from a favorite journalist of mine: “Be careful with your words. Once they are said, they can only be forgiven, not forgotten.” —Carl Sandburg

As kids, when we were being bullied or name-called, we would shout back, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” But guess what? Words can hurt. If someone we care about—a spouse, a family member, a friend, a coworker— says things that are mean, disrespectful, or thoughtless, we are affected. We are hurt.

I decided to make that Advent calendar suggestion my New Year’s resolution. Just this one. It’s one that I believe will take quite a bit of effort, but I believe I can achieve it. One that will make me a better person, make me stretch, and help me change. Sounds good to me!

Before I sign off, I want to wish my granddaughter, Savannah, a happy 21st birthday on January 27th! Where in the world have the years gone? And January 29th is my daughter, Carissa’s, birthday. I hope they both have a terrific year.

We will meet again next month. Enjoy!

Game Days and Open Houses— Hello, 2026! Let’s Eat!

First Day Greetings Crab Quiche Drain 2 cans of flaked crabmeat. Mix with 4 eggs, 1/2 cup of mayonnaise, 2 Tablespoons of flour, 1/2 cup of milk, 3 green onions (trimmed and chopped), and 1 Tablespoon of chopped parsley. Spoon in the crab and 2 cups of Swiss cheese, mixing well. Spoon the mixture into an unbaked pastry shell. Bake at 350 degrees for 50–60 minutes. Let set for 5 minutes. Cut and serve with fruits, salad, or muffins.

A Favorite Frittata

Sauté 1 cup of chopped green pepper, 1 cup of chopped onion, and 1 cup of diced ham in 1 Tablespoon of butter until softened.

Lightly grease a quiche dish and add the sautéed veggies. Add 2 slices of cubed bread, 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, 3 ounces of cubed cream cheese, and salt and pepper. Mix 1/2 cup of Half and Half with 8 eggs (5 eggs if you are using a standard pie dish instead of a quiche dish). Bake at 325 degrees for 50 minutes.

Quick Pork Tenderloins with Cranberries

Put 2 pork tenderloins into a slow cooker and sprinkle an assortment of spices on top: sage, poultry seasoning, brown sugar, salt and pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, rosemary—whatever you fancy. Add 1 cut-up onion, 1 cut-up celery stalk (and the leaves), 1 sliced orange, 1/4 cup of water or broth, 4 Tablespoons of cut-up butter, and 1 can of whole cranberry sauce. Cover the tenderloins with the other ingredients.

Cook on high for 2 hours. Test for cooked-through temperature, then let rest. Slice thinly and serve on soft rolls or with mashed potatoes, mashed yams, or rice. If you don’t want to use the slow cooker, you can bake these for 20–25 minutes at 400 degrees.

Hello, Punch

Mix together 2 cups of orange juice, 2 cups of cranberry or cranberry-apple juice, 1 cup of pineapple juice, and 1 cup of ginger ale. Mix well, then pour over ice cubes. Add raspberry vodka or your favorite spirit, if desired. Garnish with orange slices or fresh cranberries.

Cocktail Meatballs

Put a 32-ounce package of frozen meatballs (or make your own) into a slow cooker. Add a 12-ounce bottle of chili sauce, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 can of whole-berry cranberry sauce, and a 14-ounce can of sauerkraut (rinsed and drained). Stir. Cook on low for 3–4 hours.

Pig Candy Crackers

Place club crackers on a parchment-lined wire rack, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Cut thin-sliced bacon into pieces and place one on top of each cracker. Sprinkle the bacon with brown sugar and any other seasoning you like—a bit of Parmesan, if desired. Bake at 375 degrees for 15–20 minutes, until the bacon is done and the crackers are candied.

Oven-Baked Short Ribs in Wine Sauce

Salt and pepper 8 bone-in short ribs (ask the butcher if you are unsure about this cut of rib). Sprinkle flour over the ribs and set aside. In a large pot or Dutch oven, fry up 5 pieces of bacon until crispy. Remove and crumble, set aside. Add the ribs to the pot and brown on all sides for a minute or two, then remove.

Add a bit of oil to the pot. Sauté 1 chopped onion, 3 chopped carrots, 1 chopped celery stalk, and 2 chopped shallots. Sauté until you get a bit of color on the veggies. Add a cup of red wine to the pot, then stir and scrape. Add the ribs, the veggies, the bacon, and 2 to 3 cups of beef stock (enough to cover the ribs). Salt and pepper as desired. Add a sprig of rosemary and thyme if you have any.

Cover the pot. Put it in a 350-degree oven for 2 hours. Reduce the heat to 325 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove the pot from the oven and let rest for 20 minutes. Serve over mashed potatoes, fried potatoes, polenta, or rice.

New Year’s Eve Bisque

In a large stockpot, melt 1/4 stick of butter and sauté 1/2 cup each of chopped onion, green and red pepper, celery, and carrot.

A French Restaurant

Add 1 can of drained corn, 1 can of creamed corn, 1 quart of Half and Half, with a bit of heavy whipping cream. Heat through. Keep the heat on warm and add 1 can of cream of shrimp soup, 2 cans of cream of potato soup, 2 cans of cream of onion soup, 1 can of mild Ro-Tel style tomatoes, and several dashes of Old Bay or Cajun seasoning. Heat for 10–15 minutes, stirring often, but do not boil. Add 1 bag of tiny frozen salad shrimp (or 2 cans, drained, if you can’t find the tiny frozen ones). Heat through for 10 minutes on low. Serve with croutons, shredded cheese, crusty cheese bread, and salad. Serves about 10.

Game Day Hot Dip

Sauté 1 cup of chopped pecans in 1 Tablespoon of butter; set aside. Mix together two 8-ounce packages of softened cream cheese, 2 packages of diced dried beef (located next to the Spam in your grocery store), 1/2 cup of sour cream, 2 Tablespoons of milk, 2 Tablespoons of chopped green pepper, 1 chopped green onion, 1/2 cup of sour cream, salt and pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of granulated garlic.

Pour everything into a pie plate and top with the pecans. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve with bagel chips, toast points, veggies.

Slow Cooker Tomato Soup

Pour 2 large (28-ounce) cans of crushed tomatoes into a slow cooker. Add 1 Tablespoon of minced garlic, 2 cups of chicken or vegetable broth, 1 Tablespoon of dried basil, and any other spices you’d like. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours. Add 1 cup of heavy cream and 1/4 cup of cubed butter. Stir to heat through. Serve with garlic bread or toasted cheese sandwiches, croutons, crushed butter crackers, pesto, chopped onions, grated cheeses—whatever you like.

Wedding dresses this year favor a more personal aesthetic. Fresh choices for embellishments are bows (both oversized and dainty). Bows can be far more than functional. One of my favorite touches is an oversized bow at the back of the neck with ribbons trailing down almost as a train. A daintier option would be a row of tiny bows down the front of the gown.

Tiny buttons have always been a part of wedding dress details, but designers have found new ways to use this beautiful fabric-covered embellishment. Designers are featuring styles with a dropped waist; that is, a waistline that is lower than the natural waist; typically, around the hips.

An eye-catching hemline is a popular feature. A bubble hem is created by folding the hemline under and securing it, creating a rounded, puffy effect along the hemline. Hilow hemlines are also an option (shorter in front graduating to longer in the back). One designer combined both these looks for an elegant surprise, showing off the bride’s legs in lace-clad stockings.

Sheer elements have always been an important element of bridal couture, from sleeves to not-quite-open backs. A sheer lace removable skirt is sophisticated and romantic, and it provides the opportunity for a second look at the reception.

Many brides create a capsule wardrobe of outfits that are event-specific. Creating a wedding capsule wardrobe is a fresh idea born from brides who realized that weddings involve multiple outfits and that planning for these outfits ahead of time saves a lot of stress. New Year, New Hopes Looking Forward With Optimism

At the end of each year, my sister-in-law almost always makes a wish that “this year will be better than the one we just passed through.” Who hasn’t had moments when we wonder why we have so many challenges? In spite of all kinds of planning, why do we often find ourselves in a muddle?

Life is unpredictable. There are really no absolute certainties, but that is part of what makes living so interesting. What would life be like without challenges? An old friend once told me that the worst possible existence would be one that was boring. She may have been right. She may have known, even at a young age, that no life is boring unless we allow it to be—and even then, we would have to fight for the right to be bored!

As children, we were presented with fairy tales that always ended with the phrase, “and they lived happily ever after.” Oh, yeah, that’s for me. As a child, living happily ever after sounded like being on easy street or walking in tall cotton. Of course, as we become adults, we recognize that this is not really the case. We discover that life can

take huge bites out of us. We are confronted with doubt, and our values are tested. There are always decisions to make and ordeals to face. Perhaps the true version of living happily ever after is the ability for each of us to meet these challenges and learn from our own experiences and decisions.

Very few folks truly expect to live a perfect life, but most of us constantly strive for the brass ring. We naturally want to be the best we can possibly be at every endeavor. Most often, we set our own

The author is unknown, but the philosophy behind these sentiments belongs to all of us. SuperSlow Zone is not a gym—it’s a semi-private strength training studio. “Many of our clients have realized that they’ve lost strength and flexibility and that balance is becoming an issue,” says Julie. “We lose muscle starting at age 45 to 50 years. If we don’t continue to work the muscle, then we’ll lose it.” Most clients begin with one of the standard routines as they start the program. “These routines cover different areas of major muscles in the body, and you get about six or seven exercises in every workout.”

Julie also incorporates custom workouts for clients who have had knee, hip, or shoulder replacements, working in post-rehab activities so clients can get their strength back after physical therapy. The goal is to get fast, safe, and effective results with precise tracking. Results include improved cardio fitness, fat loss, and muscle gain, along with greater endurance and energy. It’s also a great way to build stronger bones, reduce back and arthritis pain, and improve blood pressure and blood sugar.

You’ll work with one of eight SuperSlow Zone trainers at your scheduled appointment, and each training session is one-on-one. The trainer sets up the machines and the weights and then guides you through each exercise to make sure you’re safe. “It’s like having a personal trainer at a regular gym but at half the cost!” Julie asserts. Safety is the first priority, and efficiency is the second.

During the high-intensity but low-impact workouts, you’ll work all the major muscles in the body. Increasing the weight to challenge muscles is the secret sauce to make muscles stronger. “The key is to get the most out of the workout, and the protocol has to be right,” Julie explains. “If we don’t challenge the muscle, it doesn’t get stronger.” Workouts aren’t easy, but that’s what makes them effective. In other words, a little quivering and shaking are good signs that the proper weight resistance is stimulating muscle growth!

Somewhere around middle age, many of us realize that we need to start rebuilding the strength and flexibility that came more easily in our youth. But it’s not just middle-aged clients at SuperSlow Zone. Clients range in age from 30 to 90 years! That translates personally for Julie. In her previous career, she was a competitive marketing executive. If your goal is smooth skin, defined cheekbones, a youthful jawline, or a more lifted, youthful look (darn you, gravity!), facial cosmetic surgery reigns supreme for a more confident you.

The industry is booming and growing with evolving techniques, shifting beauty standards, and a heightened comfort that investing in yourself is perfectly fine—and is not uncommon. And it’s not just the older crowd; younger adults are diving in, as well. Experts point to a cultural shift surrounding cosmetic surgery. It’s no longer a last resort but more of an accepted choice for refining and pre-emptively fighting the signs of aging.

Let’s note for the sake of clarity that “cosmetic surgery” is often used interchangeably with “aesthetic surgery;” both phrases often describe medical procedures that enhance appearance. A distinction is that “plastic surgery” is an overarching term for surgeries that may be primarily cosmetic or may involve reconstruction or restoring function after an injury or disease.

Before we dive into what to expect during a procedure and what recovery looks like, let’s look at a few statistics. In 2024, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reported nearly 1.6 million cosmetic procedures in the United States. Among facial surgeries, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) remains dominant, while nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) saw a 6 percent increase in 2023 and continued to rise after that.

According to a 2025 market report, demand for cosmetic surgery continues to rise; rhinoplasty is up by 3 percent this year, neck and forehead lifts are up by 2 percent, and chin liposuction rose by 6 percent. According to the ASPS, much of the growth in cosmetic surgery has been fueled by the demand for facial and neck procedures.

What are the top cosmetic surgery procedures and who performs them? Let’s examine that more closely and look at why people chose a particular surgery.

We’ll begin with the face and neck. A face lift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure that tightens sagging skin, repositions fat and tissue, and reduces wrinkles around the lower face and jawline. A neck lift. on the other hand. focuses on loose skin or fat under the chin and along the neck. Often, these procedures go hand in hand. so it’s best to talk with your surgeon for recommendations.

Reasons cited for wanting a face lift or neck lift normally include gaining a more youthful contour, smoothing out jowls, tightening droopy skin, and combating the loose skin that often results from weight loss. Remember that results aren’t always perfect.

Winter is coming. You don’t want to face the shoveling, the high heating bills, the risk of frozen pipes, and all the other worries that come with owning your own home. You like to travel at this time of year, but that doesn’t do away with the worry that something could go wrong while your home is unattended. You’re considering relocating from your current home to a retirement community, but there are so many choices…how do you decide?

Let’s assume you’ve chosen independent living in a 55+ community. You’ve talked to friends about their experiences finding a place for aging parents or for themselves. You’ve rated the list according to the major criteria of affordability, security, location, size, and what is offered. You think you’re ready to make appointments to tour some of the remaining selections. Have you done your homework?

Michale Kavan, Marketing Director for Sunridge Village Retirement Community, reminds anyone considering relocating to “do the numbers.” When you ask what a particular location costs, you’re probably going to get a four-digit number. You need to know what you’ll get for that amount.

Figure out what you’re paying out now. List your regular monthly expenses: house payment, utilities, insurance, cable, phone, computer access, outside maintenance, and even groceries. With that total in mind, ask what the quoted amount for that location includes. That’s the only way to really compare costs.

Michale reports that many prospective residents are amazed at how much is included in the monthly payment at Sunridge Village.

Payment is based on which of the floor plans you choose for your apartment: one bedroom, one bedroom and den, or two bedrooms and two baths. Each apartment has a full kitchen as well as washer and dryer hookups.

Payment includes an emergency lifeline system (a medallion to wear as a pendant or on your wrist), all utilities, and trash removal.

Also included are housekeeping, courtesy transportation to doctor appointments, shopping and more, and private storage for holiday items, suitcases, etc. Meals include breakfast and a restaurant style evening meal, or choose the flexible dining program. Extras offered at minimal expense include underground parking, cable television, and beauty/ barber shop services.

If you want to host a gathering, a meeting room can be reserved at no cost…and you can bring in your own caterer or enjoy a potluck meal. Family and guests may also be served in the dining room at regular mealtimes with advance notice.

Safety and security are primary concerns at Sunridge Village. The three-story building features a secured entrance and is equipped with closed-circuit cameras that are completely monitored. Guests have the convenince to ring your apartment from the main entry for admit-

Other resident services include social activities tailored to your lifestyle. Sunridge Village is decorated for holidays, including celebrations for Veterans Day and the Fourth of July. Sometimes, Michale notes, they’ll have a party “just because a party is needed.”

Sunridge is designed for those who wish to remain as indepndent as possible and age in place. They welcome all in-home healthcare companies and medical services. You choose the services and when you want them.

I’ve been writing about Sunridge Village for over a decade. In that time, I’ve spoken with many residents. You might expect that the wide range of amenities is what draws people to Sunridge Village. As it turns out, the overwhelming response, when asked what sold them on Sunridge Village, is the friendliness of the residents. One couple told me that, during their tour, they were asked several times if they were “going to be neighbors.” The feeling is that of extended family.

Owner Richard Anzalone, whose family owns and operates Sunridge Village, is present nearly every day. I’ve been told that he even shows up during inclement weather or when conditions are dangerous so his staff can stay off the roads. Richard recognizes his residents and they know him. They refer to him as Richard…they are all family here.

Over the years, I have met many of the people who work at Sunridge Village, and I can attest that there’s very little turnover.

For many women, those 30-second videos are often their first introduction to treatments that actually have solid science behind them. But here’s the catch: It is incredibly easy to get swept up in what looks effortless, especially when a 20-yearold influencer with flawless skin is telling you about a life-changing treatment from the comfort of her perfectly lit bathroom with a videographer who can make anything seem simple, risk-free, and instantly effective.

However, some of these treatments are powerful, meaningful therapies that deserve more than a 30-second clip or a sponsored post in your feed. They should be explored with guidance from trained, licensed professionals. Below are several widely respected wellness therapies with a lot of real science behind them that are worth learning about. Some have been trending for years, while others may not show up in your feed at all. Each one offers potential benefits that extend far beyond beauty.

Let’s begin with whole-body red light therapy. This is a full-body version of those glowing, LED masks you may have seen in your feed.

Some of the first aspects to consider are where to have your wedding and reception. Usually, the best places in town get booked well in advance, so it’s smart to remain flexible about setting your date until you’ve chosen your venues.

In order to choose your locations, consider where you see yourself getting married. For example, are you thinking of your church, city hall, or your grandmother’s backyard garden? Consider how many people you and your fiancé would like to invite, as well as the mood you envision. Comfort and Accessibility for Seniors Modifications for Enhanced Quality of Life

Today’s seniors are living longer than previous generations, and many prefer to remain in

their homes as they age. The reality, however, is that aging comes with risks. Falls can lead to a loss of independence.

Relatively simple modifications to the home environment can lower risk of falls, enhancing safety and comfort.

Adding grab bars, handrails on stairs, and better lighting will benefit nearly all older adults. Other enhancements can be tailored to individual needs. Accessibility is often a concern, especially after an injury or surgery. Although builders now realize the need for zero-step entries and wider doorways, many older homes were not built to accommodate walkers and wheelchairs.

With over 75 percent of those over age 50 saying they wish to remain in their homes as long as possible, it makes sense to be proactive with some modifications before a fall occurs or everyday activities become difficult.

Enlist a professional such as a modification contractor to do an assessment of your home for potential dangers. Kitchens present challenges with aging; for example, I am no longer able to safely reach top shelves or high cabinets. Modern appliances take limitations into account with special safety features. A kitchen range avoids burns with controls at the front or may have an automatic shut-off to prevent fires.

If outside steps cannot be negotiated, a ramp may be needed. A local

medical equipment firm may have ramps to rent when need is temporary. For a long-term concern, a contractor can build a permanent outdoor ramp. Raising the grade to floor level may be another option.

Doorways can be widened, and creating a main level bedroom may not be too difficult. Bathrooms become more user friendly with grab bars and an elevated toilet seat. A local home care equipment store will have a variety of shower chairs for safer bathing.

A transfer bench may be the answer for a bathtub/shower combination. This is a wide bench with two legs inside the tub and two legs outside. You can sit outside the tub and scooch over to the portion inside the tub, swinging your legs over the tub wall.

When my husband underwent hip replacement, he had great difficulty getting up from a seated position. Before he was released from the hospital, I called a nearby medical equipment firm and rented a recliner with power lift. They delivered and set it up. It was just what he needed to help him get to his feet safely without assistance during the first few weeks. He loved how comfortable it was when reclined

Making Choices for Your 401(k)

Sixty years ago, less than three percent of the American population owned stock. Today, that number is 65 percent and

growing. This explosion in stock ownership is due to the invention of the employer-sponsored 401(k) retirement program.

When it came into being, in the mid-1970s, there were fewer than 1,000 active plans. Now, that number is in excess of 30 million plans, with 90 million participants. Ninety-seven percent of these current plans are sponsored by small businesses with fewer than 10 employees.

Over the course of the past 50 years, the compounding impact of stock market returns has grown the total value of 401(k) assets to $15 trillion. The average 401(k) account balance is $87,438, but that number varies significantly with the age of the investor. Older workers have had many workforce years to contribute, and their account balances have increased dramatically due to the compounding effect of market returns. Younger workers, with less time on the job, often carry balances under $5,000.

Employers are the driving force behind 401(k) plans. They are responsible for establishing a plan and supervising its operation. They hire a plan administrator to do the bookkeeping and file the necessary IRS reports. They also hire a financial advisor to provide and supervise investment function.

These 401(k) plans have a number of unique features that allow participants to grow their tax-deferred salary deductions effectively and efficiently. The majority of the active 401(k) accounts are custodied in one of the three major discount brokers, and the accounts are tax-sheltered. This allows 401(k) investors to make trades with zero commissions and no tax consequences.

Participants in a 401(k) plan are required to make their own investment decisions; they choose from a menu of mutual funds provided by their plan administrator. This makes the fund menu a critical component of a participant’s investment return because the funds on the menu are their only investment options.

Originally, the investment menu was prepared by a licensed broker who was compensated by the mutual funds they chose to include on the menu. (Eagle-eyed readers may detect a potential conflict of interest baked into this recipe.) Then, in 2014, a worker at a California utility sued their employer, alleging that their 401(k) plan menu only contained “expensive” mutual funds.

In this case, known as Tibble vs. Edison, the US Supreme Court ruled that the employers had a fiduciary obligation to ensure that their employees had access to “reasonably priced” funds. They also ordered the employers to compensate their employees for their losses. It has been almost a decade since that original Supreme Court decision.

After more than 1,000 litigated cases, index funds have become the standard definition of a reasonably priced fund.

The majority of all settled Tibble vs. Edison cases involved companies with 1,000 or more employees. Ninety-nine percent of American companies are too small to make litigation economically feasible.

Thus, it is critical that the owners of small businesses who sponsor 401(k) plans educate themselves about what is on their fund menu and ensure that it meets the needs of their unique group.

401(k) plan investment menus vary widely, depending upon the number of participants. A typical plan for a large corporation contains 50 or more options. Smaller company plans normally contain 15 or fewer options.

While the number of fund options varies significantly, the types of options are fairly consistent. A typical menu contains equity funds, bond funds, money market funds, and target date funds. The equity fund portion of a plan menu can run the gamut from actively managed funds to index funds to sector funds. Many also include an international equity fund option. President Trump recently signed an executive order allowing private equity to be included in 401(k) plan menus, but many obstacles remain before this becomes a common occurrence.

Based upon the axiom “actions speak louder than words,” 401(k) participants are fairly aggressive in their investment choices. Sixty-eight percent own equity funds, while only 11 percent own bond funds. Thirty-one percent own target date funds, which are a combination of equity and bond funds.

Originally, employees were allowed to opt out of participation in 401(k) plans. Those who chose not to participate did not receive any of the employer’s matching funds. Within the past decade, 11 states have passed legislation that requires employees to participate in cases where a plan is offered. We should expect that number to grow as the number of pensions plans continues to decline.

Small business owners are busy running their business and don’t always see the advantage of making sure that their employees’ 401(k) menus have the proper mix of funds. But studies have shown, and it really doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out, that satisfied employees are more productive than disgruntled employees. When owners and workers sit on the same side of the table and order off the same menu, everybody wins.

Do you really know what it takes to keep your pet healthy, both inside and out? Just like people, dogs and cats thrive when their daily meals give them everything their bodies need to function at their best. A complete and balanced diet is the foundation of lifelong health and happiness. Pet owners today have more choices (and questions) than ever. Truly understanding what goes into your pet’s bowl can make all the difference in their everyday life.

When you see pet food labeled “AAFCO-approved,” it means that it meets the nutritional standards set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials. This seal helps reassure owners that the food is formulated to support a pet’s nutritional needs. It can also indicate what specific life stage the food is best suited for, such as a growing puppy or kitten, adult maintenance, or all life stages.

Dogs and cats don’t have the same nutritional needs, of course.

Dogs are natural omnivores and can do well with a mix of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Cats, on the other hand, are strict carnivores and depend on higher protein levels, as well as essential nutrients like taurine, to stay healthy.

Reading pet food labels is an invaluable skill. The ingredients list shows what is in the food by weight, so you can easily tell which ingredients your pet is getting the most of. Terms like “natural,” “holistic,” “grain-free,” or “limited ingredient” may sound appealing, but they don’t always tell the full story. For example, “grain-free”

doesn’t necessarily mean healthier; it simply means the grains have been replaced with other carbohydrate sources like potatoes or peas. Pet food comes in several types, each with pros and cons. Kibble is easy to store and is budget-friendly. Canned food contains more moisture and helps with hydration. Choose food based on your pet’s age, activity, and needs—for example, an active dog may need nutrient-rich kibble, while an older cat may prefer soft canned food.

Small Space Gardening One-of-a-Kind Ideas

If your gardening dreams are too big for your

gardening space, take heart! There are many ways to make the most of small spaces and bring your garden to life.

One of the most unique ways to garden (and one of my favorites) is vertical gardening. This technique can be used on a balcony, on a small patio, or in an alcove. With a little imagination, you can basically turn any wall into a living green space.

One obvious advantage to going vertical is that you can plant a garden without losing floor space. It can be a space-saving solution for tight city porches or apartment courtyards or balconies. It also creates a lovely focal point that you can enjoy inside and outside of your residence. Vertical gardening is also a wonderful option for renters. One caveat: When renting, make sure you are creating non-damaging vertical options that don’t permanently harm any structures.

The best plants for a vertical garden include trailing flowers like petunias and nasturtiums. If you lean more toward edible options, you might want to consider mint, basil, and leafy greens like lettuce. Imagine a vertical kitchen garden, with fresh greens handy for cooking! Other great options for a vertical garden on a wall or fence include succulents, sedums, ferns, and pothos.

When you’re choosing plants for a vertical garden, consider the amount of sunlight that the garden will receive. Since a vertical garden is likely up against a structure, its rays may be limited. Be sure to match the plants you use to the structures. Vining plants will need a support structure such as a trellis or netting.

Another great option for small garden spaces is container gardening. The choices are endless, and containers can work for everyone. A few rules will increase your chances of success.

The first thing you need to do is make sure your container has drainage holes.

Surprisingly, many pots and containers are sold without drainage holes! You can use a hand drill to quickly drill a few holes in the bottom of any container. The next step is to fill it with quality potting soil that is meant to be used in containers (not just soil from the ground).

Once you have planted your plants, make sure that they receive adequate sunlight for the species you have chosen. Make sure to water them properly and make sure to feed the plants with a suitable fertilizer as they grow. A great bonus with container gardens is that you have the ability to move the plants around according to where the sun is shining or the rain is falling.

If you’re planting seeds or seedlings in containers, you need to follow the spacing guidelines to give the plants enough room to grow. The depth to plant seeds is typically twice the size of the seed. If you are planting seedlings, plant them at the same depth that they were in the tiny nursery pot. Water consistently to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

Note that container gardens dry out more quickly than in-ground gardens.

Be sure to water more frequently during hot weather. You can move them out of the hot afternoon sun to avoid damaging the roots. The larger your container, the better your plants will grow and thrive.

I love to hang container plants on my backyard fence and on my patio walls.

They add another dimension to the garden palette when you hang plants around your area. Another way you can add dimension to a small-space garden is to incorporate container plants in between your perennial in-ground plantings. It adds

another layer of interest and color, and you still get the benefits of moving them around as needed.

Another idea for a small space is to plant a theme garden with containers and vertical plantings. I have done a salsa garden before by planting all the ingredients that I would need to make fresh salsa. That includes tomatoes (in a container), peppers (vertical trellis), cilantro, (in a container), and green onions (in a container). An Italian flavors garden might include tomatoes, garlic, and popular herbs such as basil, thyme, and oregano. The great thing about these space-saving theme garden ideas is that the more you harvest them, the more they thrive.

Small-space gardening can be for anyone! If your space is limited to a balcony or patio, if you want to enhance a backyard fence, if you want to start small with your first endeavor into gardening…you can make it happen. Container gardens and vertical gardens bring a different kind of convenience to gardening, and they are worth a try!

As enticing as those Black Friday and Cyber Monday cruise

deals may have sounded, the best time to book a cruise is from January through March, which is called “Wave Season.” My travel agent confirmed that the cruise lines offer the most discounts, upgrades, onboard credits, “kids free,” and other incentives during this time. What better way to plan for 2026 than to book a family vacation (or two) for later in the year?

A cruise can be a great choice for bringing multiple generations of the family together on a single vacation. Logistically, it’s easier (and often more economical) than booking multiple flights and hotel rooms, especially if you’re hoping to visit multiple locations. And during your at-sea days, there are plenty of activities for all ages on the ship, as well as the cabins for those who need some down time.

Whether you are already an avid cruiser or you’re planning your first cruise, there are so many choices of vacation styles that there is a cruise line and cruise ship for everyone. I am currently in the process of trying out each cruise line, and I have only a few left to go. They are hard to pass up when all of these offers and specials come out. For people who live in certain cities, it actually costs less to be on vacation than to stay home!

The first decision you need to make for a cruise is where you want to start or end up. The Caribbean is the most popular cruise destination for Americans, and Florida ports are where you will find the most itineraries.

Choose from eight locations throughout the state. I like how CruiseCritic.com explains some of them: “Miami: The Biggest Cruise Port in the World; Fort Lauderdale: Not Far From Shopping, Dining, and Vibrant Nightlife; Port Canaveral: The Cruise Port for Disney Fans; Tampa Bay: One of the State’s Most Convenient Cruise Ports; and Key West: You’ll Want to Explore on Foot.”

Alaska and Mexico cruises leave at ports up and down the West Coast, including Vancouver, Seattle, Long Beach, Los Angeles/San Pedro, and San Diego. A fall cruise through New England would be gorgeous, and I love visiting Quebec; those fill up fast. Galveston, Texas, is another port option that will take you down to the Western Caribbean and Central America.

As far as when to go, there are peak seasons for each region. In the Caribbean, you want to make sure you are not traveling during hurricane season or cold weather, so November through March is your best bet. Summer cruises are peak because kids are out of school so the demand for families goes up.

If you want to go to Alaska, there is a window from April to October, with summertime pricing at its premium. In fact, regular cruises will do Alaska in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter. And Texas is preferred during the fall and wintertime.

Mega ships are rising in popularity. Do you want more, more, more? These city-sized ships are huge! They offer more types of rooms, more restaurants, more activities, more options for kids and teens, more sports, more shopping…I cannot think of anything that they do not offer.

All of the cruise lines have new ships and new itineraries coming out.

Celebrity Cruises announced that they are entering the river cruise game starting in 2027 with a new fleet—sailings instantly sold out as soon as they became available. People love a river cruise! There are also now longer cruises

and overnight stays on certain itineraries, like Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. These longer trips range from 14 to 35 days, so you have time to really immerse yourself in the region.

Royal Caribbean has created two new all-inclusive beach clubs: one in the Bahamas that opened in December and one opening in Cozumel later this year. They have been casting for “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” to be performed on the new Legend of the Seas, so that will be a great choice for cruisers who savor the on-board entertainment.

I walked into that new job like many people do: hopeful and convinced that the opportunity was a doorway to something bright. But little by little, that shine dulled. I’d fix 10 problems only to uncover 15 more, and that cycle followed me for six years.

Are you dreaming of a new kitchen? Do you imagine yourself cooking on updated fixtures, enjoying new details,

appreciating the convenience of your new, space-efficient layout? But then…do you imagine yourself waiting through a long, drawn-out disruption of your home as the remodel drags on and on? Don’t despair! Many of the most popular remodeling trends focus on surface-level upgrades that minimize disruption to your home.

One popular upgrade that doesn’t cause a full-scale disruption is a new countertop and backsplash. These provide a seamless, modern look but are fairly quick and easy for the pros to install. Quartz and natural stone are durable and popular choices. Zellige is a type of glazed, handcrafted terracotta tile originating from Morocco. It is known for its vibrant colors and unique surface variations—each tile has slight imperfections that add character. This earthy tile is gaining popularity in backsplashes.

An easy update for cabinets is a fresh coat of paint. This year, warmer colors are trending. The white or gray kitchens we’ve seen in recent years are giving way to gorgeous colors like deep green, blues, beige, and taupe.

Another option for cabinets is refacing. In this process, the cabinet doors and drawer fronts are removed to have a fresh veneer applied before being reinstalled. The existing cabinet boxes and layout remain the same. Refacing also involves replacing door hinges, handles, and drawer pulls. You can update your kitchen much more affordably than by installing new cabinets. This process allows you to retain your kitchen layout but provides many new style options. You’d be surprised how different it can look when it’s done!

If you’re getting new countertops or cabinet fronts, you can take advantage of a gorgeous trend for 2026: rounded edges on cabinetry and countertops. I was not sure about this trend until I saw photos of it. It is stunning the way the rounded corners bring a beautiful contrast to the harder angles of a kitchen. It is really true elegance.

When it comes to low-maintenance, high-impact kitchen updates, you can’t beat new cabinet hardware. Right now, a focus on minimalist designs, bold finishes like matte black and brushed gold, and mixed metal combinations make for a very sophisticated, modern look.

Another update that will immediately improve the look of your kitchen is upgrading the lighting fixtures. Layered lighting includes ambient lighting, accent lighting, and task lighting, and this combination is vital for a beautiful and functional space. Consider pendants over the sink or island, sconces around the windows, and under-cabinet lighting to illuminate your countertops. Some homeowners even include lighting within their cabinet and pantry shelves. These types of variety lighting add warmth and depth to your kitchen space and are usually quick to install and arrange.

This may be a prudent time to cover a few kitchen trends from the past that may have outlived their usefulness. We mentioned that all-white and all-gray kitchens are being replaced with earth tones and jewel tones, but that’s not all we’re leaving behind. Busy patterns on granite are giving way to much cleaner looking options. The trend of perfectly uniform hardware is definitely giving way to a more curated and eclectic look.

One trend that I will not be sorry to see go is open shelving.

Yes, with open shelving, you can always see everything…but also, you can always see everything! The constant need for tidiness, dusting, wiping off the kitchen grime that cooking brings…no thanks!

Something near and dear to my heart is a custom pantry. I read about a house remodel where they determined that the family only used the dining room twice a year, so they had it turned into a laundry room and walk-in pantry. What a change! They took the space they never used and transformed it into the ultimate in kitchen convenience…and main-floor laundry, to boot! That’s the kind of creativity that an interior design team can bring to a remodeling project.

Of course, that’s not quite one of the quick, effortless upgrades we’ve been discussing. If you’re interested in a slightly more engaged renovation but still can’t live without your kitchen for weeks, you might consider a company that offers three-day kitchen makeovers or a total remodel in one week. This is quite the concept! It does cause a significant disruption, but for a very limited amount of time. It’s just a matter of how much time and disruption you and your family choose to tolerate.

If you’ve been putting off updates to your kitchen because you don’t want the hassle, consider some high-impact updates that won’t take long. They might surprise you!

Welcome Change by Changing Expectations

Can it be January already? Where has the past year gone?

Just before the end of the year, I like to take some time to review the past 12 months and ponder how…and maybe even why…that year has passed so quickly. Fortunately, for me at least, 2025 has been filled with positives. I have good memories and there aren’t too many things I’d change. My New Year’s Resolution is going to be maintaining that positive feeling.

There’s a commercial running on television encouraging us to visit a major amusement park complex. It’s the song introducing the ad that caught my attention: “Feeling Good,” sung by Michael Bublé in the ad but originally recorded by Nina Simone. The chorus, as with so many songs, is what sticks: “It’s a new dawn. It’s a new day. It’s a new life for me…and I’m feelin’ good.” Let’s put a new spin on the lyrics by substituting or adding, “It’s a new year!”

I suggest you review the past year with the rest of your family. How do they feel about the year? What was good? Was there anything (within their power to change) that they would want to change? The kids are halfway through the school year. Has it been good so far? If not, why not? Will it take a change in attitude? Actions? Expectations? Habits? This is a good time for problem solving!

change my point of view to match those things?

Is anyone in the family artistic? It might help to think of the new year as a fresh canvas or drawing pad. Maybe they have new paints, crayons, chalk, or colored pencils…how could they use those tools to visualize their new year?

If your clan likes music, ask them what songs describe the way they want the new year to feel. What tunes, artists, or musical genres make them feel good? If dancing is their “thing,” what music makes them want to move? Now would be a good time to get old CDs, tapes, records, or sheet music off the shelf and create memories that will sustain a good feeling in the year to come.

Are you a family of readers? What authors, styles, or stories are favorites? What would happen if your family tried to write their own poems or stories? One year, I bought some children’s books for my tutoring clients to read. I wrapped each one for Christmas. Of course, after each was opened, I had to read it to the family. My kids were all adults by then, but it was fun to share.

Remember, kids are people too. Parental attitudes affect the kids.

Enthusiasm about change can be contagious.

A Serious Health Concern

The right amount of high-quality sleep is as important for good health as diet and exercise.

Sleep improves your brain performance, mood, and health. Not getting enough regular sleep raises the risk of many diseases and disorders, from heart disease and stroke to obesity and dementia. Unfortunately, about 50 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders. Let’s take a look at these disorders, their diagnoses and causes, and their treatment options.

According to recent National Institutes for Health (NIH) studies, about one third of adults report insomnia symptoms and six to 10 percent meet the criteria for insomnia disorder.

How much sleep we need varies depending on age and varies from person to person. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need about seven to nine hours of restful sleep each night.

Sleep disorders involve problems with the quality, timing, and amount of sleep, all of which can result in daytime distress and impairment in functioning. Sleep disorders often occur along with medical or mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, or cognitive disorders. There are several different types of sleep disorders, of which insomnia is the most common. Others include obstructive and central sleep apnea, parasomnias, narcolepsy, and restless legs syndrome.

Insomnia affects millions worldwide. Characteristics of insomnia include difficulty falling or staying asleep, waking up too early, or feeling unrefreshed upon waking. Many factors, including stress, anxiety, depression, medications, caffeine, and alcohol, can cause insomnia.

With sleep apnea, a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep, leading to many brief awakenings throughout the night that can sound like snoring, gasping, choking sounds.

Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by a physical obstruction in the airway, and central sleep apnea is caused by a failure of the brain to signal the muscles to breathe.

Parasomnias are a group of sleep disorders involving abnormal behaviors or experiences during sleep. Some common examples include sleepwalking, sleep talking, night terrors, and nightmares.

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks. It can also cause sleep paralysis, in which a person is temporarily unable to move or speak and experiences vivid hallucinations upon falling asleep or waking up.

Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs, like itching, burning, or crawling, that can only be relieved by movement. It often occurs in the evening or at night, leading to difficulty falling or staying asleep.

A comprehensive medical assessment for sleep disorders

may involve a patient history, a physical examination, a sleep diary (written record of your sleeping habits), and clinical testing (such as a sleep study). A sleep study allows the physician to identify how long and how well you’re sleeping and to detect specific sleep problems. Diagnosis of a sleep disorder and choice of treatment depends on the frequency and severity of symptoms.

Treatment for a sleep disorder varies, but the common factors include a combination of sleep medications and behavioral techniques, such as cognitive behavior therapy. Most of the medications can be habit-forming, so a physician’s oversight is critical. Over-the-counter sleep medicines contain antihistamines, which are commonly used to treat allergies. They are not usually effective and can cause other issues.

Other techniques to address sleep problems can be used in conjunction with medical treatment. Many people turn to complementary health approaches like relaxation techniques, massage, and yoga. Lifestyle changes to support good sleep hygiene can include adding fish and vegetables to the diet, reducing sugar intake, reducing stress and anxiety levels, sticking to a regular sleep schedule, drinking less water before bedtime, limiting caffeine intake, and more. Ask your health professional for guidance to help you find what works best for you.

Treatment for sleep apnea involves the use of appliances or even surgery, depending on the severity of the disorder. Physicians consider continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) the gold standard treatment for moderate or severe sleep apnea. A CPAP machine plugs into an outlet and sits next to the sleeper’s bed. A tube connects the machine to a mask that covers the sleeper’s mouth, nose, or both. The machine blows air into the sleeper’s airway, which helps keep it open during sleep. Nasal devices are another alternative for treating mild-to-moderate cases of sleep apnea. They work by gently opening up nasal passages so that air can flow more freely. Custom-fit dental appliances may also be in order to keep airways open.

Sleep disorders are treatable but take time to resolve. They may never be cured, but a consistent treatment plan and regular communication with your doctor can put you on a path to better sleep.

Building a dream home from the ground up is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You get to decide everything

from location and views to backsplashes and faucets. It can be one of the most exciting times of your life... if you work with experienced, local professionals. Architects and builders are highly skilled in the intricacies of home building and will be your trusted partners throughout the entire process. Get ready for a tremendously rewarding adventure!

Your first steps are to determine your budget, along with who will be your partner; the two really go hand in hand. You can select a builder who has standard plans and materials, or you can opt for a custom builder and architectural team that will draft something close to the plans in your head.

Keep in mind that you’ll be working with the builder for months and making very important decisions, so choose someone you mesh with. For example, if numbers are important to you, ask your potential builder about his philosophy of providing a running report of each step. (What a great chance for you to use Excel spreadsheets!) If you want an artistic product in the end, select a builder who touts unique designs and one-ofa-kind finishes. How about a sunroom that doubles as a lounge with a wet bar and water feature?

Choosing your builder is a huge part of making your dream home a reality. Here are some helpful questions from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) to help you get started: What recent homes have you built? May I contact the homeowners? Is a financing plan available? Do you do the work or hire subcontractors? How much experience do you have? Do you work with certain architects?

The benefits of enlisting an architect for your dream home design are clear: You will likely end up with ideas that are better than the ones you’ve come up with on your own. Your architect will look at the project with years of training and a critical eye. They will make suggestions that you may not have even considered. Do you want it to feel modern, traditional, cottage, or “green?” When you’re seeking a qualified architect, be sure to ask for credentials and references. You’ll want to personally see work that the architect has completed and thoroughly interview the expert before moving ahead.

Some questions you can ask a potential architect include: What are your recent projects? Where did you get your training? Do you have a signature style? Who will design the project? How do you charge? What project management services do you offer?

Your budget will certainly include bricks and mortar, but you’ll also need fixtures, extra features, and home furnishings.

A good industry rule of thumb is to increase your budget by 10 percent to cover the unforeseen. You want to be an informed, educated, and realistic consumer. You need to know what you can afford ahead of time so that you know you can afford the

dream once it’s completed! Industry standards give a timetable average of four months to a year to build a brand new home. Your builder will be key in creating a timetable that fits your own project.

Many home building hopefuls learn that securing a short-term loan for new construction is different from applying for a mortgage to buy an existing home; many buyers will need to do both. When you apply for a construction loan, lenders will likely require finalized building plans and a list of all the fees.

We Learn Every Single Day, Even If It Gets Messy

Knee–jerk, adjective: occurring quickly and without thought: often reacting quickly and without thought.

We’ve all found ourselves having this type of reaction in our lives to what someone has said to us. Typically, this kind of reaction is not directed toward complete strangers. More often than not, it is triggered by what someone close to us has said. Before we know it, we’ve blurted words out that may (or may not) be an accurate reflection of what we really believe or what we meant to say. Open mouth, insert foot!

“The trouble with talking too fast is you may say something you haven’t thought of yet.” —Ann Landers What causes us to speak before we think? I believe that part of it is simply learned behavior with someone who we are close to; this could be a spouse, significant other, child, coworker, or good friend. There are always patterns to the relationships that we have with the people in our lives. We “know” the people who we surround ourselves with—there is a certain understanding of how that communication with one another evolves. Maybe it is a “oh no, here we go again” reaction, meaning we have bitten our lips a little bit too long and the topic has been building up steam. Maybe we were caught off guard—tired, not remembering the totally great beings that we are, and we took what was said way too personally or totally misunderstood what the other person was trying to say.

That’s why it’s important to know your options in the world of professional mental health services. A trained professional can offer you the right mix of tools to reach better days ahead. You can discuss your personal goals with a provider and then develop a plan together to make them a reality. A mental health professional can offer guidance and direction to help you find happiness and contentment on a level that meets your own needs.

Psychologists: Psychologists study the human mind and behavior, and they often have a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in psychology.

They are also trained in counseling, psychotherapy, and psychological testing. Psychologists are not licensed to prescribe medications, but they can refer you to a psychiatrist for that purpose. These experts use scientifically tested procedures to help people change their behaviors, emotions, and thoughts. On average, psychologists spend seven years in graduate education, training, and research. They also complete a clinical internship in a hospital or organized health setting.

Psychiatrists: These experts are medical doctors who are licensed to prescribe medications. Psychiatrists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental or psychiatric illnesses. They are highly skilled in psychotherapy, otherwise known as “talk therapy,” which can help to change a person’s thought patterns and behaviors. A psychiatrist understands the body’s functions and the complex ways in which emotional illness and physical illness work together.

Social Workers: Social workers provide social services in health-related settings. A common goal is to improve a person’s social and psychological functioning by offering counseling. Social workers help many people deal with relationships and solve family and personal problems. They assist people by teaching them how best to function in their own environment. Some social workers investigate and treat people who have been abused or neglected.

Psychotherapist: These pros use talk therapy techniques that can help people better understand their moods, feelings, behaviors, and thoughts. They can also help people learn how to control their life and to use healthy coping skills to address challenges. They can treat a variety of mental health problems, such as anxiety and mood disorders, addictions, eating disorders, and personality disorders. They also help with a number of life stressors that are not necessarily linked to mental illness.

Life Coaches/Career Counselors: Life coaches and career counselors offer guidance and motivation to help people improve their careers, relationships, and lives. They can work with people to recognize their skills and dreams, refocus life’s goals, and move past challenges. Professional coaching can give a fresh perspective on personal challenges. Career coaches focus more on moving forward at work, helping tap into strengths and talents, and assisting people in finding an acceptable work-life balance.

Licensed Professional Counselor: These counselors have at least a master’s degree in counseling and extensive post-master’s experience. These types of counselors are either licensed or certified to diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders. They may specialize in depression, addiction, suicidal impulses, stress management, emotional health, and more. They often work with other mental health specialists.

When you’re ready to decide who might help your situation, ask them these questions: 1) Are you licensed? 2) How long have you practiced? 3) What’s your training and background? 4) Do you have an area of expertise? 5) What are your fees? 6) What kinds of treatment do you use? 7) What types of insurance do you accept?

As with any professional service, it’s wise to ask for referrals from trusted family and friends. You can also ask your physician for a few names. Whether your concern is based on a family matter, work issue, financial trouble, illness, death of a loved one, or another matter, making the first call is a huge step in the right direction toward mental wellness.

Once you talk with a mental health expert, you should feel comfortable about setting some personal objectives. Some goals will take more time than others! The feeling of hope and relief is a sign that you are making progress. During this holiday season, if you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, know that help is available.

If the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic sent you into a cleaning-decluttering-organizing frenzy, you are not alone.

Closets were emptied, junk drawers were cleaned out, and storage spaces everywhere were filled with beautifully labeled bins and trays. By now, most of those Instagram-worthy spaces have quietly slipped back into their previous states of disorganization. It’s time for a refresh! A new year brings new goals, new energy, and, for many of us, a renewed desire to make home feel like a sanctuary again.

We often think of decluttering as a chore, but it is actually a psychological glow-up. Every time you choose what to keep, toss, or donate, you’re activating decision-making muscles that build confidence. There is something undeniably energizing about standing in a room and thinking, “Look at me, getting things done.”

Clutter, on the other hand, works against us. Research consistently shows that disorganized spaces can make us feel anxious and overwhelmed. Humans are wired to crave order; it helps our brains rest. So when your countertops disappear under paperwork or you spend 30 minutes hunting for your keys, the stress is real.

Clutter can even create friction with the people we love. Few things start a household squabble faster than having to tear the house apart to find something that has been buried under someone else’s “I’ll deal with that later” pile.

Decluttering often leads to delightful surprises. A little organizing session can end up feeling like a treasure hunt. Forgotten gift cards, misplaced cash, the sheets you swore you bought but could

not find, your favorite sunglasses, or the eight water bottles you thought were lost—all found! The psychological payoff for decluttering is huge and includes more energy, a better mood, and a calmer household. A clean home feels like a deep breath.

There’s also a financial perk to decluttering. When your home is organized, you stay on top of your bills, avoid late fees, and stop buying duplicate items because you “lost the other one somewhere.” And maybe best of all? You actually have more “me time” because you aren’t constantly managing chaos.

How to Handle Vehicle Collisions

Our vehicles are instruments of our independence.

Most of the time, they enable us to accomplish our travels without mishap. What no one wants is a collision. If, unfortunately, we are in such a situation, we need to be prepared to handle it in the best way possible.

First, let’s go over what not to do in case of a collision. Do not leave the scene of the accident! If your vehicle is drivable, you can move it out of the way of traffic, but don’t drive away from the area. Do not admit fault or accuse the other driver of causing the accident; do not discuss the accident with those around you; and do not discuss the accident on social media.

Now, let’s go over what you should do. If you have flares and are able to access them, set them up to warn other drivers to use caution. Stay calm and check for injuries. Call 911 and wait for the police to arrive.

Have your driver’s license, registration, and insurance cards available for the police.

If possible, take pictures of the damage to your vehicle and of the other vehicle involved. Photos from multiple angles will help the insurance company determine the cause of the accident. Get the name, address, phone number, license number, and insurance information from the other driver involved and provide your information to them.

When the police arrive, be polite and answer their questions about the incident so they can file a police report. You can request a copy of the report to give to your insurance agent so they can start processing the claim. Remember: Do not admit fault or accuse the other driver of being at fault; just give the facts as to what physically occurred.

The police and insurance adjusters will determine the cause and the settlement.

If you don’t already have a repair shop in mind, ask friends and family for recommendations. When it comes to finding a reputable repair shop, you can’t go too wrong with one that is certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). To be a certified ASE technician, pros must pass a test and show experience requirements. If you’re keeping in mind the resale value of your vehicle, professional, certified repair is the way to go.

Repair shops will generally categorize the damage to your vehicle as minor or major. Minor repairs include small dents that can be removed without damage to the finish, straightening a bumper, fixing loose trim, and replacing broken or cracked glass. These items can usually be repaired in two or three days.

Major repairs might include fixing a bent frame, rebalancing the suspension, or repairing major damage to fenders or the body of the vehicle. If parts need to be ordered, ask whether the shop plans to use original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. These are made by the original manufacturer of your vehicle. They are guaranteed to fit and

are covered under warranty. If the frame is damaged, the technician will use hydraulics and chains to pull the frame back to its original position.

If some area is beyond repair, it is cut out and the technician welds in new metal parts. A laser might be used to make sure the measurements are correct. Major paint jobs are usually required after repair of major damage. These types of repairs can take three to four weeks.

If the damage is minor, a police report is not legally required but is still highly recommended. Sometimes, damage that seems at first to be minor is more serious than it appears. A police report will support your claim. It is an official record of the evidence of the accident. It greatly simplifies the insurance claim.

The state of Nebraska requires all drivers to carry liability insurance; you’ll need to show proof of insurance when you register your vehicle. Minimum coverage handles property damage or bodily injury that you cause to someone else. Most people insure for more, both to cover the damage to their own vehicles and to pay for damages caused by a driver who is not insured.

You will have the deductible to pay before other claims are paid. The amount of your deductible was determined when you picked your insurance coverage. Your insurance agent will be your guide in filing the claim, but the more information you can provide, the smoother and quicker your claim can be settled.

Enjoy the independence your vehicle allows you, but be aware of your surroundings when you’re at the wheel. One second of your eyes and brain not focused on the task of driving can cause the misery of a collision.

Why What We Say Matters …And When It Doesn’t

Have you ever stopped to think about the words you use? Do you change your vocabulary depending on whom you’re speaking with?

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how words only carry power because we give them power and meaning.

What do I mean by this? Consider slang. I have two daughters, and a popular word in their vocabulary is “sick.” When I hear that word, I think someone isn’t feeling well. But for teens today, it means something is extremely good, cool, or impressive.

The other day, my daughter started to say something to me, then stopped. I asked what she had been about to say. Her response was, “I was going to use a slang term, and you wouldn’t understand it.”

The phrase she was going to use? “Lock in.” I told her I understood it from context—but there are plenty of slang terms I don’t know. I’ve stopped trying to keep up. And honestly, watching language reinvent itself every few years is oddly comforting. It’s a reminder that words are living things; they shift, evolve, and adapt right along with us.

This leads me to my first realization about words: If someone doesn’t understand the words coming out of your mouth, those words lose their power. It’s no different from being dropped into a country where no one speaks your language. You could say whatever you liked, and it would neither offend nor endear you to anyone.

Similarly, when someone close to you says something hurtful, it carries far more weight than the same comment made by a stranger.

A stranger’s careless remark might sting, but a loved one’s words can wound deeply and linger. By that logic, we are choosing—whether consciously or not—the power we give to the words we hear.

I’ve also realized that tone, timing, and intention are just as important as the words themselves. A simple phrase like “I’m proud of you” can lift someone for days. Meanwhile, a sharp comment delivered in the wrong moment can unintentionally bruise. We’ve all replayed conversations in our heads, wishing we had phrased something more gently or expressed something more clearly.

Regardless of the audience, I believe it’s wise to take care with what we say. Words can build bridges, soften conflicts, and bring people together—but they can just as easily divide. I try to choose kindness, knowing that even the simplest sentence can have an impact far beyond what I intend.
