October!

Hello, everyone! The month of ghosts and goblins is here. Pretty soon, the haunted houses will open up, and adults will get to act like kids again…at least for a night or two.

I am a little embarrassed to admit that I have only been to one Halloween party where a costume was required. That was years and years ago! I was in my twenties. It was one of those really big parties where everyone went all-out. The costumes were amazing! I was stuck for an idea, so I chose to go as a Lady of the Night. I had my hair all ratted up, with rhinestones dispersed throughout. I went to Goodwill and bought the sexiest dress I could find. I poured on the makeup and perfume. I wore very high heels and had a blast! A very funny, great memory.

When my daughter, Carissa, was ready for her first trick-or-treat adventure, I wanted to make her costume memorable. Back then, I did some sewing. I chose a pumpkin for the pattern. It had orange felt with green piping and green felt for the hat. I messed up on the first go-round and had to start all over. It eventually turned out terrific, if I do say so myself. Carissa was only about three years old, so I’m guessing she has no recollection of it all. But we have pictures!

When my granddaughter Savannah came around…20 years ago!…we always made it a point to have her trick-or-treat at our house. McKenna followed. She is now 14 and celebrates Halloween the way that most 14-year-olds do—spending time with friends.

This year, Manny and I are going to see if we can decorate our house for the neighbor kids. When I moved into our home over 27 years ago, there weren’t any children in the neighborhood. That has really changed over the past five years or so. It’s pretty cool. We see kids riding bikes, shooting baskets, walking dogs. The whole vibe is great. There are a couple of young children across the street from us, and they have become attached to Manny. We head outside and we hear, “Manny, Manny, Manny!” It’s so much fun. Their dog loves him, as well. Maybe it’s because Manny always has a MilkBone or two in his pocket?

Life is very good. I was telling Manny the other day that autumn is my favorite time of year now. It used to be summer, but these days I relish the cool breeze, the low humidity…Colorado weather!

Have a great October. Happy Halloween to everyone! Make sure your superhero or ghost is safe! We’ll connect next month.

Tailgates and Spooky Nights—Let’s Eat!

Rancher’s Sunday Quiche

Thinly slice 2 yellow or sweet onions and fry in 2 Tablespoons of butter for 10–15 minutes, until golden brown. Remove onions from the skillet. Add 6–8 slices of bacon and cook until slightly crispy. Remove and crumble. Line a pie plate with a pie crust (homemade or purchased). Whisk 8 eggs with 1 and 1/2 cups of Half and Half (or cream). Add salt and pepper to taste and mix well. Pour the egg mixture into the pie shell. Add toppings of your choice, along with 2 cups of grated cheddar cheese. Loosely cover the pie plate with foil and place it on a cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove foil, then bake for another 10 minutes. Remove and let set for 10 minutes before serving.

French Puffs

Mix 1/3 cup of soft butter with 1/2 cup of sugar and 1 egg. Blend 1 and 1/2 cups of flour with 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/3 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1/2 cup of milk. Mix all ingredients together lightly. Fill 12 muffin cups with batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 20–25 minutes. Melt 1 stick of butter. Mix 1 teaspoon of cinnamon into 1/2 cup of sugar. Roll the hot puffs into the melted butter, then roll in the cinnamon/sugar mixture. Serve immediately.

Late Harvest Frittata

Search your refrigerator for any veggies that you have just harvested (or purchased), like squash, zucchini, onion, Brussels sprouts, carrots, shallots, potatoes—you will need about 1–2 cups of diced veggies. Dice up whatever veggies you’ve chosen. In an oven-safe skillet, sauté the veggies in a bit of butter or olive oil, along with diced ham or bacon bits, for 2 or 3 minutes or until softened. Whisk 8 eggs

with 1/2 cup of milk. Pour into the skillet. Add salt and pepper as desired, along with any chopped fresh herbs you like. Sprinkle 3/4 cup of grated cheese on top. Cook on low heat until the edges of the eggs are set. Place the skillet into a 375-degree oven and bake for another 20–25 minutes. Rest for 5 minutes.

Chocolate Zucchini Bread

Mix together 3/4 cup of soft butter and 2 cups of sugar. Lightly mix in 3 eggs, 2 teaspoons of vanilla, 2 cups of grated zucchini, 1/2 cup of milk, and 1 cup of chopped nuts. In another bowl, whisk together 2 and 1/2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of unsweetened baking cocoa, 2 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Alternately combine the wet and dry ingredients; lightly mix. Spread batter into greased loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 50–60 minutes. Cool in pans for 15–20 minutes, then remove.

Pumpkin Bread

In a large bowl, whisk together 3 and 1/2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder, 3 cups of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice. In another bowl, mix 4 eggs, 1 cup of vegetable oil, 1 (16-ounce) can of pumpkin, 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts, and 1/4 cup of orange juice or water. Combine the wet ingredients gradually with the dry, mixing lightly. Pour into greased loaf pan or pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 50–60 minutes. Cool in pans for 15–20 minutes, then remove.

Slow Cooker Game Dip

Cook 1 pound of ground chuck and drain the grease. Place the meat into a slow cooker. Add 2 (8-ounce) packages of cream cheese, 1 (16-ounce) package of Velveeta, 1 (16-ounce) jar of prepared salsa, 1 packet of taco seasoning, and a small can of diced chilies. Stir. Cook on low for 1–2 hours. Have tortilla chips and veggies for dipping. Add additional chopped tomato or jalapeño if desired.

Mummy’s Lunch

Remove the dough from a ready-made tube of crescent dough. You should have 4 rectangles. Cut each rectangle into strips. Wrap hot dogs (or pre-cooked brats) in strips like a mummy. Place on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden. Add 2 dots of mustard for eyes.

Octoberfest Sauerbraten

Mix together 4 cups of water, 2 cups of red wine vinegar, 10–12 whole cloves, 2 bay leaves, 3 teaspoons of salt, and 3 teaspoons of brown sugar. Remove 2 cups of this marinade and store it in the fridge.

Add a 3–4 pound chuck roast to a zip-top bag and pour in the marinade. Zip shut, massage, and refrigerate for 1–2 days, rotating the bag a few times.

When ready to cook, remove the roast from the bag or bowl and discard the marinade. Lightly pat the roast, then cover with flour, salt, and pepper. Place the roast in a roasting pan. Add several sliced carrots, onions, celery, and the reserved 2 cups of the marinade. Bake (covered) in a 325-degree oven for 3–4 hours, until tender. Thicken juices, if desired. Serve with good rye bread and cooked sweet and sour cabbage.

Baked Jack O’Lantern Peppers

Slice the tops of 4 big bell peppers and scoop out the seeds. Carefully cut out eyes, nose, and mouth—like a jack o’lantern. Place the peppers in a lightly greased casserole dish so they are touching and will not fall over. Stuff with a cooked mixture of beef, chicken, turkey, diced ham, rice, any veggies, cheese, tomatoes, and seasonings. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, until peppers are soft.

Stuffed Butternut Squash

Cut 2 butternut squashes (lengthwise) and scoop out the seeds. Place them, cut side down, on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Pierce the outer skin a few times with a sharp knife. Bake at 400 degrees for 40–45 minutes, until soft. Remove from the oven and scoop out a bit of the center for the stuffing. Fill with a mixture of cooked hamburger, chicken, turkey, veggies, cooked rice. Sprinkle a favorite cheese on top, return to oven, and bake for another 10 minutes, until the cheese is melty.

Vintage Revivals

Get Ready for Fall Nostalgia

Do you struggle with transitioning your outfits to cooler temperatures?

This year, it’s easy with the return of the cardigan sweater. The tried-and-true cardigan is the top fall trend of the year. Our moms loved them, but is there room in our closet for them? Here are a few ways to style the modern nostalgic influence of the cardigan sweater.

You don’t want your sweater to look like it came out of a 1950s closet! Wear it buttoned up, leaving the top or bottom button undone. Be sure the fit is body skimming, not tight or oversized. Another option is to layer it open over a sweater vest that also buttons up the front. The double vertical rows of buttons create a slimming line and a softly suited version of power dressing.

For a cozy yet feminine look, layer a waist-length cardi over a longer tunic top. For the most versatility, choose a neutral color that goes with all your outfits. Tying a cardigan around your shoulders has never gone out of style for those times when the temperature is unpredictable.

Next, onto fall colors. Everywhere you look this fall, you’ll see brown, brown, and more brown. All shades are trending, from chocolate to mocha to butterscotch. Enjoy wearing all these tones together to create a monochromatic, slimming, and chic outfit.

You may have thought that you could only pair brown with black, but brown mixes well with other fall colors, too. Paired with maroon makes it look expensive; paired with mustard or pumpkin, brown looks elegant. Try it with all your favorite tones. You’ll be surprised how it updates everything. Blue and brown is one of my personal favorite combos. Black is never out of the picture, though! It is always elegant, especially when accessorized with this fall’s bold gold jewelry.

Silhouettes for fall 2025 are curve forward. Think rounded shoulders with gentle shoulder pads, soft hourglass cuts…even peplum tops are back to emphasize the curves. Midi length everything is on point, with dresses, jackets, and coats all long and cozy this fall.

I have always been a reluctant wearer of turtlenecks…but here comes the funnel neck, which is a relative of the turtleneck but is much more wearable. It feels less restrictive but gives that same coziness and unbroken line. Mock necks are also a good choice for warmth and comfort this fall.

Solids are mostly on the forefront for fall, with a couple of exceptions. Plaids are back in a big way. The plaids can be quite subtle, with varying combinations of fall colors and a strong accent on, of course, brown. The ever-popular polka dot is joyful in every size and dimension. They are easy to work into your wardrobe for a playful, fun, feeling.

Scarves are being worn in a retro way that we haven’t seen in a while. Try a small satin scarf tied around your neck for a pop of color à la Audrey Hepburn. Or string a silk scarf through the belt loops on your jeans for a modern, funky belt. It’s a fun, cool way to wear a scarf!

For a sharp but affordable vibe, accessorize with suede, from boots to slouchy handbags. Designers are using washable suede fabrics for jackets, skirts, and pants for an easy-care fabric that feels autumnal but is also seasonless. Handbags have become a way to express your personal style. Adding charms, scarves, and other adornments adds interest and lets your creativity shine!

Another revival from the past is faux fur! Enjoy touches of fur trim on your coat or even on your boots. In many cases, designers have chosen detachable fur touches to enhance versatility. If you’re ready for a bolder look, consider a fur “chubby” jacket.

Tweed has returned for another retro revival. You may still have some tweed jackets in the back of your closet! Time to bring them back to the forefront.

Belts are still very much on trend, but they’re not everyone’s favorite. If you are hesitant about wearing a belt because your waistline is not what you would prefer, try wearing a belt with a tucked-in top and an open jacket. This is an eye-fooling hack that narrows your waist!

A new season always creates an environment of excitement with us fashionistas. It’s always fun to see what is new and upcoming. Trends should help you round out your wardrobe for your personal style and taste—you shouldn’t expect to love them all every season. Head to your favorite boutiques and try on some new trends. If you smile in the mirror, that trend is for you! Your wardrobe is a constantly evolving process. Isn’t that why we love it so much?

Musicals With Strong Female Leads

Who Could Ask for Anything More?

In addition to being a Communications and Marketing professional for 50 years, I was once a theater major. I am what people affectionally refer to as a drama nerd. I was in several musicals in high school, in college, and even when I was stationed overseas with the American Red Cross. (In the 1980s, plays were mounted for the young soldiers and their families while they were stationed abroad.)

Watching the Tony awards every year and thinking about musicals perhaps more often than the average person has made me wonder which popular musicals feature powerful roles for actresses. I also thought it would be fun to explore their story lines, to showcase the variety of topics these productions cover. Most of them will be familiar to you, but I may also share a few surprises.

Wicked is one of the most popular musicals with strong feminine roles. It has had a resurgence recently, as the movie version came out in 2024. The movie is breaking all the records for box office sales, but before it was a film, it was a long-running musical on Broadway. The story features two female characters—Elphaba and Glinda—and their relationship. The stage production featured two Broadway giants, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel.

A remake of the play Gypsy is now appearing on Broadway. It features an ambitious stage mother Mama Rose and her daughters and has some unforgettable songs like, “Let me Entertain You” and “Everything is

Coming Up Roses.” Audra McDonald is starring on Broadway in a revival of this musical.

Barbra Streisand is probably my favorite singer and is also an incredible actress, producer, and director. She is known for playing strong lead characters in film and on Broadway. Two iconic musical shows she starred in are Funny Girl, the story of Fanny Brice of Ziegfeld Follies fame, and Helly Dolly, about a strong-willed matchmaker and her exploits to find a prominent businessman a wife. Both shows have had long runs in the Broadway theatre.

One of the most popular musicals based on a historical figure is Evita. The musical tells the story of Eva Perón, the iconic Argentinian First Lady. Its first production was in London in 1978, but it moved quickly to Broadway.

Another is The Sound of Music, based on the life of Maria Von Trapp. The character played by Julie Andrews on the silver

screen was a real person, though not every event in the movie happened in real life. The musical features unforgettable songs like, “My Favorite Things” and “Edelweiss” and continues to draw viewership whenever it is on television. It is also a popular high school production.

Some of the more contemporary examples of musicals with strong female leads include Legally Blonde, Chicago, Mean Girls, and Hairspray Legally Blonde follows Elle Woods’ journey through law school. Mean Girls focuses on the drama and social hierarchies of high school. Both were popular movies that were adapted into musicals. Chicago centers on Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, two women who become celebrities while on trial for murder. Both the film and stage productions feature dance numbers inspired by the legendary choreographer Bob Fosse. Hairspray features Tracy Turnblad, a plus-size teenager who dreams of dancing on TV. In one of the film versions, John Travolta plays Tracy’s mother.

Little Women focuses on the lives of the four March sisters, with Jo as a strong female lead. This 2005 Broadway musical was adapted from the beloved Louisa May Alcott book. 9 to 5, a story about three female coworkers who fantasize about and then enact revenge on their sexist boss, was a popular movie released in 1980. The musical features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, who also starred in the movie. Mamma Mia is a feel-good musical featuring a strong female lead, Donna, and her daughter, Sophie. It continues to light up the stage all over the world and was also turned into a movie.

There are many more. In fact, when I was overseas, I played the lead in a musical called Something’s Afoot. My character was a detective named Miss Tweed, based on the iconic Agatha Christie character of Miss Marple. I sang and danced my way through this hilarious romp of trying to find out “whodunnit” and solve a murder mystery. It is a lesser-known play…I don’t believe it ever made it to Broadway.

Strong female roles are featured in many musicals, and the plays’ stories are as varied as the female characters portrayed on stage.

The Paw Spa Pet Resort

Treat Your Dog Like Family

We’ve all heard that “man’s best friend is his dog.” Many dog owners would go a step further, considering our dogs as part of the family. As such, we want to make sure they are always cared for in the manner that they deserve. Sheila Irish, owner of The Paw Spa Pet Resort, feels the same way. She has created a “family” experience for the dogs in her care…you can feel confident that your furry family member is having a great time, even while you’re away.

Sheila, a passionate dog owner in her own right, created her company after she saw a need for dog services. “I could not find a place for boarding that I felt comfortable with for my own dogs when I was going on vacation,” she recalls. “That is when I decided to establish The Paw Spa Pet Resort.”

She did a great deal of research, traveling to other states and facilities to choose the best elements for her facility. “I bought a large piece of land and built the facility from scratch. My philosophy is that dogs are our family and should be treated to the best place possible.”

The Paw Spa Pet Resort lives up to this philosophy in every way. The resort offers daycare, boarding, and grooming, as well as a gift shop. The facility itself features 54-square-foot suites, a running area with 6,000 square feet of outdoor space, and an expansive indoor yard and pool for paddlers (the pool is in the shape of a bone!).

An additional feature Sheila installed is a state-of-the art air exchanger on the facility’s roof to completely change the resort’s air four times per hour. “There are different diseases dogs can get, and we have had very few since we opened because of this filtration system.” It’s not hard to see why the resort has been voted the Best Dog Day Care through the Best of Omaha for 10 years in a row. The company was also a winner of the Sarpy County People’s Choice Award.

The Paw Spa Pet Resort is a family business, with Sheila’s children and husband involved. She also employs 23 people, each of whom feels the same way she does about dogs. “Everybody here loves dogs,” Sheila notes. “My employees know every dog when they walk in, and that makes a difference to a pet owner. We love these dogs, which makes the dogs and owners feel good.”

In fact, her advice to any new business owner starting a new endeavor is that you need to focus on hiring right. “The heart and soul of any company is their employees, so take the time to make the right choices.”

To attend The Paw Spa Pet Resort, dogs must be current on all vaccinations and be verified healthy by a veterinarian. Everything is personalized, from grooming that is specific to each breed as well as the type of daycare and boarding needed by each dog.

“Communication is key to our success, and we make sure we know the owner’s needs and expectations. In fact, if you are considering our boarding services, we offer a free one-day daycare to see if our facility is the right match for you and your pet.”

It is a full-time, all-consuming job, but Sheila wouldn’t change it for the world. “I get tremendous rewards when I see not only how happy the dogs are but how pleased the owners are. It gives me great joy.”

Pet owners give the resort rave reviews, and much of the business comes from word-of-mouth advertising. Dog owner Tyler particularly appreciated the grooming his dogs received. “Crystal is the best! She took her time for my doggies when grooming. I think I was more anxious than my dogs. She handled me well, too! She assured me how well my doggies did and provided an update when I picked up, which I love.” Stephen echoes these sentiments. “It is an awesome place that takes top notch care of our family dogs. I cannot recommend this place enough!”

Prices are very competitive, and Sheila offers a 10 percent military discount. Overnight boarding is $65 for one dog and is decreased to $48 for a second. Daycare runs $40 daily, with a half day of 4 hours at $35 a day. It is important to book ahead of time, especially for the holidays!

The resort is open to dog owners from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can see your pet playing online anytime at thepawspapetresort.com. The facility is located at 16912 Audrey Street, just off 168th and Harrison.

Stronger Joints Mean Better Living!

The Big Picture on Joint Replacement

Joint replacement isn’t just a medical marvel—it’s also a return to better function and quality of life. When joints hurt, grind, or pop, it’s time to visit your general practitioner for advice. Generally, an orthopedic doctor or rheumatologist can determine the cause of pain and recommend where you go from there. It’s a journey worth taking for pain relief and improved mobility…and success rates are high! Read on for the big picture on joint replacement.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reports that over 700,000 knee replacements are performed annually in the United States, and the American College of Rheumatology says that about 544,000 hip replacements are performed in a year. In fact, it’s projected that, by 2030, the number of knee replacements in the US could reach 3.2 million annually, and hip replacements might skyrocket to 635,000.

Baby boomers (ages 57–75 years) are prime candidates for seeking new knees and hips. Today’s seniors are remaining active later in life, but they’re still susceptible to increased wear and tear. Obesity also plays a role in joint replacement. Remember, every extra pound is a five-pound load added to your knees. Patients are younger than ever now, in many cases opting for joint replacement between ages 45 and 64.

More specifically, the most dominant force that drives a patient to rescue their joints is osteoarthritis. That’s when cartilage erodes and joints get grumpy and unreliable. Fractures are another key culprit, especially in the hips (think “partial hip replacement” for cracks). Inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis are less common but definitely factor in.

Modern joint implants are where science meets art. Implants are made from metals such as titanium and cobalt-chromium alloys for strong stems and cups. Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (plastics) helps line sockets for a low-friction surface. Ceramics are often used in femoral heads for less wear. Metal on metal contacts don’t wear as well and are less commonly used, but combos like metal on plastic are common. Strong and effective materials help knee and hip replacements last more than 20 years!

Knee replacements are one of the most common and successful orthopedic surgeries performed today. Your surgeon might discuss several options, including total or partial replacement.

A total knee replacement usually removes both ends of the knee joint (femur and tibia). The process, also known as knee arthroplasty, replaces the damaged surfaces and then reshapes, often with the insertion of metal and plastic components. Sometimes, the patella is also replaced with a plastic component. The results are often excellent. Most patients experience pain, stiffness, swelling (especially during the first two weeks), and limited mobility during the first six weeks of recovery. Physical therapy and pain management are the keys to meeting recovery goals.

Half knee or partial replacements are ideal for those whose arthritis is limited to just one area of the knee. If knee ligaments are stable, including the ACL, and you’re in good health, a less invasive

surgery option may be just right. Partial replacement is very individualized (sometimes used for mild activity patients). Ask your doctor if you’re a good candidate. Less invasive options sound great but are often considered only after other non-surgical options like physical therapy or weight loss have failed to provide relief.

There are also advancements for knee replacement that spare the ligaments. The focus is on preserving the ACL or PCL. This specialized knee surgery gives a more natural feel, better range of motion, and faster recovery time. It is sometimes considered for patients whose ligaments are healthy and intact.

The second most common joint replacement is a hip replacement. The top three surgical options for hips are total hip replacement (posterior approach), total hip replacement (anterior approach), and hip resurfacing.

The traditional total hip replacement uses the posterior approach for replacing the damaged hip. That means an incision is made at the back of the hip to remove the damaged ball and socket of the hip joint. This approach typically cuts and repairs muscles, especially the gluteus maximus, during surgery. Recovery is effective but takes a bit longer to get back to normal activities as opposed to other procedures.

This standard procedure is time-tested and may be the best for patients with complex hip anatomy or someone who has had previous surgeries. Patients with larger body mass may do better with the posterior procedure. Most surgeons are experienced with this approach, and it offers more flexibility in choice of implant.

The second option is a direct anterior approach, in which surgeon inserts the artificial hip joint through a small (3–4 inches) incision at the front instead of at the side or back. This spares muscles and tendons for less pain and a quicker recovery time. This approach is more complicated and may lead to nerve irritation, but it leaves the patient less prone to dislocation. Not all surgeons are experienced with the direct anterior approach.

Hip resurfacing means that the femoral head is trimmed and capped, and the socket is fitted with a metal cup. Since this surgery only replaces damaged portions of the hip joint, it spares the bones and works well for young and active patients, also reserving their natural gait. The best candidates for resurfacing are typically under 60 or patients who experience limitations due to arthritis and other conditions. Recovery times normally span from six to 12 weeks.

Which hip surgery has the easiest recovery? Direct anterior approach takes the gold for faster rehab, fewer restrictions, and fewer dislocation fears. The bone and socket are replaced just as in posteri-

or hip replacement, but there’s less muscle damage and a quicker return to mobility. Direct anterior is usually a good bet for active boomers.

Hip replacement is individualized based on health, lifestyle, activity level and expectations for recovery. You and your surgeon will discuss which procedure is likely to bring the best result for you. It’s important to remember that the long-term outcomes are generally similar between approaches, so long as you have a skilled surgeon. Statistics show that most patients opt for posterior hip replacement because of complications or previous hip surgeries. That’s why your orthopedic surgeon is a key to helping you make the best decision.

What about shoulder replacement? Damaged shoulder joints are often replaced to relieve pain and restore range of motion. Implants usually last over 10 years, and the procedure is growing in popularity. During surgery, the deltopectoral approach spares the deltoids (the large triangular muscle forming the rounded contour of the shoulder) but cuts the supraspinatus (one of four muscles that make up the rotator cuff).

A different approach, often called a reverse shoulder replacement because the positions are switched, is the transdeltoid procedure. This surgery is often used when the rotator cuff tendons are torn but can’t be repaired. The deltoid muscle that normally helps stabilize the shoulder now becomes the primary muscle for lifting and rotating the arm. Expect to wear a sling for several weeks and go through physical therapy as with any joint replacement.

The real superstar in recovery from joint replacement is physical therapy. A smooth recovery is rehab-fueled! Rehab starts early, as often

as the day of surgery or the next day, two to three times a week plus recommended home exercise. Hips might be ready for the normal daily grind in six to 12 weeks, whereas knees might be in full motion after only two weeks. Shoulders often need up to six months of progressive therapy. Remember, the more intense the therapy, the faster the recovery! Some therapists recommend starting PT before surgery, so patients are in the best possible shape before their procedure.

Protecting your joints from the start can help prevent or delay surgery. How do you keep your joints happy? Maintain a healthy weight, for one thing. Moving smart in low-impact sports like cycling, swimming, Pilates, and yoga are sure bets to keep joints nourished.

Strengthening the area around your joints works as a shock absorber! For example, try improving leg strength for knee health. In any workout, good posture is important (your mom was right about slouching!). Avoid repetitive twisting or loading positions, and avoid prolonged sitting or standing. Avoid sudden, jarring movements, which are often the cause of injury.

You’ve got this! Pain relief and restored movement mean real freedom. Tailored surgery options combined with dedicated rehab will get you where you need to be with materials so hardy they may outlive you. Time to get moving!

Goldsmith Silversmith

Quality, Originality, and Value

Dwaine Ferguson, owner of Goldsmith Silversmith, hails from the village of Brewster in Blaine County, Nebraska—the smallest incorporated county seat in the state. Growing up in ranch country, Dwaine learned to read people and rely on the honor of a handshake. As a young man, he honed his artistic abilities by studying architectural draftsmanship. After trying his hand at drafting for companies large and small, he decided the suit-and-tie world wasn’t for him…he needed a better outlet for his creativity.

He started his career as a working artist by traveling to craft shows to sell sculptures of all sizes. “My work was cumbersome…difficult to lug around. I decided smaller was better and ended up making jewelry.”

In the beginning, he sold most of his wares himself. “I sold a guy 20 rings for 10 dollars each,” Dwaine recalls. “What a deal, right? Years later, a customer came in wearing a ring I recognized from that collection. I asked the man where he got it.” According to the client, Dwaine continues, “he paid a lot more for it than I originally sold it for. I guess I didn’t know the value of my own work!” Dwaine learned a valuable lesson: If you don’t value your own work, then no one else will.

Dwaine started out at Goldsmith Silversmith doing repair work for the previous owners. Eventually, they wanted to sell. He made an offer, and they accepted. “They said they’d show me the ropes, but they never did,” Dwaine says. “That was over 50 years ago! I’m still here…and still learning.” With his ponytail and Fu Manchu-style mustache, Dwaine is known by some as “the hippie of the Old Market.”

Quality is a key word at Goldsmith Silversmith. Dwaine attests to the quality materials and workmanship in all items in the shop. Most of his sales staff are artists themselves. “Most of the pieces we sell in the store are one of a kind, designed and made by artists,” Dwaine declares. “Art appreciates in value. Quality lasts!”

Every artist signs their work. When the piece is too small for a signature, the artist will use an individualized, inconspicuous stamp. (That’s how Dwaine knew for sure that the ring mentioned earlier was his own work.)

Having passed the final exam from the Gemology Institute of America regarding pearls, Dwaine claims expertise in their use, and he loves to design with them. Recently, he has been investigating lab diamonds (that is, real diamonds that are created in a laboratory instead of dug from a mine).

While he has his own personal favorites, Dwaine keeps up to date on jewelry trends at large. Gold is always popular. Rose gold is trending. White gold is popular with younger people. Yellow gold is coming back. Diamonds are always a good choice when you buy them from a reputable store or dealer. Some beautiful pieces are made by combining stones.

Inspiration can come from anywhere!

Many of the pieces coming from Goldsmith Silversmith are custom designs. Dwaine’s design process begins with a conversation with the client about what is wanted. “I like to talk with people. I learn a lot from casual conversations,” he explains. Inspiration can come from anywhere! “When you come in with a design in mind… if you can imagine it, we can do it.”

If you don’t have anything in mind, Dwaine will show you the catalogue of designs he’s dreamed up to help you get ideas and spark the creative process. You can choose stones and metals from the selection at the shop, or you can bring in your own and have them designed into a new piece.

Once you’re done talking it through, Dwaine will makes sketches of your idea for the design…putting those thoughts and ideas on paper. After you approve the sketch and a “ballpark estimate” on the final cost, Dwaine will create a wax mock-up of the design. “This avoids wasting valuable materials,” he points out. “The mockup can be adjusted by size or even changed in design detail. If a person doesn’t like the piece, they won’t wear it, and that’s a waste!”

Goldsmith Silversmith will make jewelry repairs when possible. The cost depends on the extent of the damage. Goldsmith Silversmith will always fix a piece that was purchased from them. “When you’re looking for a jeweler,” Dwaine advises, “look for someone you can trust. Ask questions. Be aware. A high price on an item doesn’t necessarily mean a high value! Talk to your experienced friends.”

Goldsmith Silversmith is located at 1019 Howard Street, in the Old Market area. Feel free to drop in or make an appointment by calling 402-342-1737 or texting 402-681-1306. Visit goldsmithsilversmith.com to see samples of gorgeous designs.

Coping

With Hair Loss

It’s often said that a woman’s hair is her crowning glory. It symbolizes femininity, beauty, and pride. A woman’s hair is part of her identity. So, it’s not surprising that losing your hair feels like losing a part of yourself. It can trigger a sense of grief and loss, have a devastating impact on self-esteem and body image, and even lead to mental health issues. Coping with hair loss is not easy, but you can fight back.

Start by determining the cause. Several factors can lead to hair loss. Age, stress, pregnancy, an overactive thyroid, lack of protein, sudden weight loss, hormonal changes, and certain medications can all be contributing factors. The effects may be temporary or permanent. One in five women will be affected by female pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia).

Medication is often a good first-round choice to combat hair loss. Hormone replacement therapy may decrease or even stop hair loss in menopausal and perimenopausal women. If an autoimmune disorder is suspected, a corticosteroid may be prescribed to stop the inflammation responsible for the problem. Prescription-strength Nizoral shampoo contains 2% ketoconazole and may help reduce the body’s production of hormones that can lead to hair loss. A trained healthcare professional can help identify and treat nutrient deficiencies caused by underlying medical conditions that may be the culprit.

Another option is a minimally invasive treatment such as platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP). PRP is a process whereby blood is drawn from the patient and placed into a centrifuge that isolates the platelets. Following this separation, a physician injects the platelets into areas of the scalp where hair loss has occurred to stimulate new growth. The platelets stimulate collagen production and prolong the hair follicle’s growth cycle.

Each PRP treatment takes less than 30 minutes, and adverse effects are minimal. The treatments are usually administered monthly for the first three to four months, and then every three to six months after that. Results may be noticeable in as little as two months.

Low-level laser therapy has also shown promise in combating hair loss. Laser treatments increase circulation and stimulate hair follicles, promoting growth. It may also improve the strength and thickness of existing hair. Multiple sessions over an extended period are required. Outcomes vary, but most women experience promising results.

Hair transplant surgery has been around since the 1950s, but techniques and technology have greatly improved over the years. At its simplest, a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon removes a patch of hair from one area of the scalp and transplants it to a bald spot. Multiple hair groupings may also be harvested. This is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia.

Numerous temporary hair replacement solutions such as hair extensions, toppers, and wigs can be customized for a natural look.

Hair extensions have come a long way. They can be either natural or synthetic and come in many sizes and lengths. They’re perfect for hiding both large and small areas of thin hair or bald spots and can be custom-colored. They’re attached with clips or tape, and the removal schedule depends upon the type of extension. Some extensions are sewn in.

Toppers are exactly what their name says: top-of-the-head hairpieces that are easily customized to blend in with your existing hair. They are available in natural or synthetic form and are attached with clips, tape, or a combination of both.

Bonding is a process where a human hair topper is bonded to the top of the head using a medical-grade adhesive. Bonding is durable and can be worn for up to six weeks, allowing you to easily go about your daily activities. The look is very natural, and no one would ever suspect that it’s not your own hair. Some toppers are integrated into your own hair using beading or tape. This is a great choice for those who do not yet have significant hair loss.

Millions of women wear wigs on a daily basis. Today’s wigs appear more natural than ever before. When choosing a wig, it’s important to consider face shape, age, lifestyle, and personality. Wigs are available in both synthetic and natural hair, and in just about every color under the sun. A variety of styles and constructions are available, and there’s an option for every budget. Salons have trained professionals to help navigate the process. They can show you how to style your wig at home.

Combating hair loss doesn’t have to be a daunting task. No matter which hair loss solution you choose, remember that it’s never too late to reclaim your crowning glory.

Kitchen Trends 2025

Bring Your Vision to Life Interiors By Design

Whether you’re actively planning a kitchen remodel or just dreaming about one, you’re in good company. Kitchen remodeling has taken the world by storm! The once humble kitchen, designated for the single purpose of meal preparation, has undergone a complete transformation. Today’s kitchen is the hub of activity—a multi-functional space where families gather, do homework, and entertain friends. In 2025, kitchen remodeling is about blending style with functionality. It’s all about making spaces work better. From pint-sized condo kitchens to big open concepts, there’s never been a better time to take your kitchen and your lifestyle to the next level!

A kitchen remodel is one of the most rewarding upgrades a homeowner can undertake. It’s also disruptive and comes with significant expense. But ask any homeowner who has taken the plunge and the response is overwhelmingly the same: a kitchen that reflects personal style, provides functionality, and comes equipped with advanced technology is well worth the investment.

A kitchen remodel can cost anywhere between a few thousand dollars for minor upgrades to well over a hundred thousand dollars for a completely new kitchen with high-end finishes. A well-planned budget is key to achieving your dream kitchen without financial stress. Experts advise allocating 5–15 percent of your home’s overall value to a kitchen remodel and budgeting by category. Cabinets are the most expensive component, usually accounting for 35 percent of the total budget, followed by labor, appliances, countertops, and flooring.

Focus on the must-have elements first and then allocate funds for the discretionary wants, such as higher-end appliances or a customized backsplash. Always plan a contingency fund of between 10 and 20 percent of your total budget to provide a buffer should any surprises pop up during the renovation. Once you’re comfortable with your budget, stop by your local kitchen design store for personal design services, product recommendations, and the opportunity to see materials and finishes in person.

In terms of style, 2025 is all about clean lines with natural wood tones and bold accents. Sustainability continues to be a top priority, with eco-friendly materials like reclaimed wood, bamboo, recycled glass, and natural stone. These incredibly durable finishes ensure that your kitchen will look fabulous and last for years while reducing your carbon footprint and promoting a healthier planet.

One of the first decisions may be whether to reface your existing

cabinets or replace them altogether. Refacing cabinets involves keeping the existing cabinet boxes and replacing only the doors and hardware. If your cabinets are structurally sound and you’re not changing your kitchen layout, refacing may be the better option. If, however, you want a complete kitchen transformation with a new layout, replacement is necessary. Cabinet replacement is more costly and more time consuming but allows for full customization.

Countertops play a major role in the overall design, value, and function of any kitchen. According to the 2024 Cost vs Value Report in Remodeling Magazine, a minor kitchen remodel with new countertops returns an average of 96.1 percent of the money invested. The majority of homeowners prefer natural stone countertops; when paired with neutral cabinetry, the beauty of natural stone just shines. The elegance of natural marble, granite, and quartzite elevate a space, adding an element of timeless sophistication. Combine that with their durability and longevity, and it’s easy to see why these countertops are a smart investment.

Artistically Designed and Skillfully Crafted Custom Frames

Hiring the right professionals is the key to a successful remodel. An interior designer can guide an otherwise overwhelming process. With expertise in the development of a design concept, materials selection, and project management, an interior designer can save you time, money, and stress by helping you avoid costly mistakes. To maximize available storage space, consider adding an organization specialist. Let the experts streamline and organize your cabinets and pantries in ways that make sense for you.

Ask friends, neighbors, or colleagues who have recently remodeled their kitchens to recommend a contractor or designer. Make sure that every professional you hire is licensed and carries liability insurance. Check out their portfolios and focus on projects similar to yours. Read reviews. Get multiple bids to be sure you’re getting fair pricing.

The timeline for your remodel will depend on the scope of work. A complete remodel with a change in floor plan and electrical and plumbing work can take three to five months. Smaller cosmetic updates with no floor plan changes can be completed in just a few weeks.

A kitchen remodel is an investment in your home and your lifestyle. Don’t wait any longer. Start planning your kitchen remodel today and reap the many benefits it has to offer.

Beyond the Pink Ribbon

40 Years of Breast Cancer Awareness

The first Breast Cancer Awareness Month took place in 1985. Its goal was to promote early detection of breast cancer through education and to encourage women to get regular mammograms. At the time, there were no pink ribbons, but there was a growing need to break the silence around a disease that too many faced with little support.

The initiative began as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries, now part of AstraZeneca. Fear and stigma often prevented women from seeking care early, and medical research was progressing slowly. The campaign aimed to shift public perception and encourage open conversations about breast cancer.

The now-iconic pink ribbon was introduced in 1991, when the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed them out at its New York City race for breast cancer survivors. The ribbon brought visibility to the cause, opening the door for deeper conversations and critical fundraising for research and support services.

A breast cancer diagnosis in 2025 looks very different from one in 1985. Today, we know much more about breast health. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol, avoiding smoking, and undergoing routine screenings are all proactive measures that can make a real difference in reducing breast cancer risk.

About 30 percent of newly diagnosed cancers in women are breast cancer. In 2023, approximately 43,000 women and 530 men died from breast cancer. Despite these sobering statistics, advances in early

detection and treatment have dramatically improved survival rates. The average five-year survival rate for people with invasive breast cancer is now 90 percent. When the cancer is found early and remains localized to one breast, the rate rises to 99 percent. More people are surviving breast cancer and returning to their lives.

Breast self-exams are no longer part of formal screening guidelines, but they still help individuals become familiar with the normal look and feel of their breasts. Any changes should be shared with your healthcare provider. The most effective tool for early detection remains the mammogram.

Traditional mammography uses low-dose X-rays to capture images on film. Digital mammography delivers faster results, requires fewer exposures, and tends to be more comfortable. It is especially effective for women under 50 or those with dense breast tissue.

Three-dimensional mammography provides a more precise and detailed image. It helps distinguish between overlapping tissues and masses, which reduces false positives and improves early detection. Current guidelines recommend that mammogram screening be based on individual risk factors and age. Average risk includes women

who have never had breast cancer, have no strong family history of the disease, do not carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations, and have not had chest radiation therapy before age 30. For women at average risk, mammograms are optional between the ages of 40 and 44. From age 45 and 54, yearly mammograms are recommended. Starting at age 55, women may continue with annual mammograms or switch to screening every two years.

Women at high risk include those with confirmed BRCA gene mutations, those with a first-degree relative with these mutations but who have not been tested themselves, those who received chest radiation therapy before age 30, and women with specific genetic syndromes. These individuals should talk to their doctor about starting annual breast MRIs and mammograms beginning at age 30.

Breast cancer treatment depends on the type and stage of the cancer. Options include surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy to destroy cancer cells, radiation therapy to target the affected area, hormone therapy to block hormones that fuel some cancers, and immunotherapy, which strengthens the immune system to help fight the disease and manage side effects.

There are currently three FDA-approved immunotherapy options available for breast cancer. Researchers are also developing a breast cancer vaccine that could prevent recurrence or possibly stop the disease from developing in the first place by teaching the immune system to recognize and eliminate cancer cells.

Many women choose to have reconstructive surgery after breast cancer treatment. Options include implant-based reconstruction or autologous reconstruction, which uses tissue from another part of the body. A 2024 study found that about 44 percent of women who had breast cancer surgery decided not to have reconstruction, a choice known as going flat.

Physical therapy is also an essential part of healing. It helps improve strength, restore range of motion, and manage pain. It can also prepare patients for future treatments by ensuring adequate mobility.

While the pink ribbon remains a powerful symbol, the true purpose of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to empower individuals with knowledge, support those affected, and continue pushing for research and innovation. It reminds us all that awareness leads to action, and action saves lives.

Beau Joyau

Where Style Meets Personal Connection

Do you ever stare at your closet full of clothes and feel like you have nothing to wear? Do you have pieces with the tags still on because you have never worn them? If you would like a personalized styling experience, Beau Joyau boutique can help you create a wardrobe you will love to wear. While you are there, explore the extensive selection of Polish pottery that will add a beautiful touch to your home.

Pam Huerta’s retail journey started with a gift of Polish pottery stoneware from her sister. She fell in love with its beauty and durability but could not find it locally. So, in 2002, she launched Select Polish Pottery from her home, offering handcrafted pieces from Boleslawiec, Poland.

Soon after, she added women’s accessories to her inventory. Her son suggested the business name Beau Joyau, which means “beautiful jewel.” The boutique now features an ever-updated mix of clothing, jewelry, accessories, handbags, soaps, perfumes, gifts, and Polish pottery.

In fact, Beau Joyau carries the most extensive collection of Polish pottery in Nebraska. The pottery has been made in the same way for centuries and is still hand-crafted and hand-painted. Customers will find bakeware, kitchenware, kitchen and home accessories, and seasonal items. Polish pottery is lead-free and cadmium-free, scratch-resistant, and safe to put in the oven, dishwasher, and microwave. “Polish pottery brings cheer and beauty to the table,” she said. “It adds joy to everyday gatherings with friends and family.”

Beau Joyau caters primarily to women aged 40 and over, offering clothing that combines affordability, quality, and timeless style. “We are a lifestyle boutique,” Pam explains. “We carry pieces that are elegant but not overly trendy.” You’re sure to find something you love at Beau Joyau, whether you’re getting dressed to go to school games, cook at home, run some errands, care for aging parents, dine with friends, or attend a formal event. Pam curates the inventory from a globally inspired perspective, and she stocks everything from casualwear to refined statement pieces.

Beau Joyau carries an extensive collection of stylish jewelry, and most pieces carry lifetime warranties. “There are so many ways jewelry can enhance an outfit,” Pam asserts. If you don’t want to take your fine jewelry on vacation, you can choose some new favorites from the great selection of travel jewelry at Beau Joyau. “It can be paired with fine jewelry pieces, and people cannot tell the difference!”

Accessories like handbags, purses, scarves, sunglasses, and coats can enhance an overall look by adding texture, personality, and visual interest. And different accessories can create entirely new looks from the same outfit. Beau Joyau’s staff can help you choose accessories that highlight your unique style.

Pam’s customer service philosophy is straightforward. “We spend time with our customers to find what works for them.” She enjoys giving customers the confidence to try new things they might not have tried on their

own. “Our customers love getting personal assistance and help putting a wardrobe together,” she shares. “We have loyal customers who have been coming to us for years.”

Some of Beau Joyau’s favorite fashion trends this season include rich fall colors like greens, browns, and burgundies. Pam notes the popularity of wide-leg pants and recognizes they are here to stay. “These pants can work for all heights, if you have the right cut,” Pam notes. Looking ahead, she is already stocking stylish and elegant pieces perfect for the upcoming holiday season.

Beau Joyau’s travel essentials include wrinkle-resistant, easy-to-wear pieces. Pam recommends choosing timeless items that are easy to maintain and can be mixed and matched, so you can cut down on the number of items you need to pack. You’ll look polished and put together no matter where your travels take you.

Pam offers a piece of fashion advice for every woman who is trying on clothing. She says it is important to look at your full profile before making a purchase. “Just because something looks good in the front, that does not mean it looks good in the back,” Pam says. “Your exit is just as important as your entrance.”

This season, Beau Joyau customers can look forward to seasonal shopping specials, sales events, a fall-winter fashion show, and a jewelry extravaganza. Depression in Seniors

When to Get Serious About Depression

We all feel sad sometimes. During times of loss or grief, anyone would feel down. How, then, can we identify depression?

Clinical depression is serious and can even be life-threatening, if untreated. Though it is common in older adults, it is not a natural result of aging. We should all be aware of the symptoms of depression and know when to seek professional help.

Warning signs such as persistent sadness, anxiety, irritability, restlessness, or loss of interest in activities that were formerly enjoyed should raise a red flag. Other signs include a change in eating habits, fatigue, slower speech or movement, increased use of alcohol or drugs, sleep issues, neglecting responsibilities, or trouble concentrating and remembering.

Just one of these signs, especially if intermittent, may not be cause for alarm. However, if several of these are noticed and they last for more than two weeks, it’s time to consult a physician. Thoughts or talk of suicide should always be taken seriously!

A primary care doctor can check for any health issues or even medication that might be causing depression. If medical issues are ruled out, they can recommend a psychologist to do an evaluation.

Older loved ones may have a higher risk of depression due to things like disability, lower income, chronic health problems, and social isolation. The rate of depression in seniors can correlate with certain life challenges. While depression occurs in only 3 percent of the general

population of elderly people, studies show it soars to 11.5 percent of those hospitalized and 13.5 percent of those who require home health care. Women over 65 are diagnosed more often than men.

Like high blood pressure or diabetes, depression needs medical attention. Once depression is diagnosed, treatments typically include therapy and medication. Psychotherapy (sometimes called “talk therapy”) with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or other licensed mental health care professional can be incredibly helpful.

Medications are often used to stabilize brain chemistry that impacts mood. SSRIs are antidepressants commonly used for older adults. They must be prescribed by a physician or mental health nurse practitioner. A combination of treatments is often most effective.

You may be tempted to help an older loved one who is experiencing symptoms of depression. You can certainly provide support and encourage them to eat well and stay active, but depression requires the expertise of a mental health professional. It cannot be wished away! If you are a caregiver, be alert to clues that your loved

one is feeling worse.

We know there are elements that increase one’s risk of developing depression. Some factors related to increased risk include family history, alcohol use, stroke, sleep issues, stress, cancer, lack of exercise, and social isolation. Chronic pain and the resulting physical limitations can affect the way one feels, thinks, and acts.

While complementary treatment methods can be helpful, they should not be expected to solve the problem alone. Ideas include yoga, music, meditation, or acupuncture, all of which can provide some benefits when combined with traditional treatment. Certain OTC supplements have been studied, but results are inconclusive. Exercise and a healthy diet are beneficial. Any complementary approaches should be discussed with one’s doctor or therapist.

Light therapy has proved helpful with seasonal affective disorder (SAD). This is a type of depression that comes with a change of season. Most commonly, it happens in the fall to winter months. Symptoms include feeling sluggish or sad most of the day, disrupted sleep patterns, appetite changes, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, or feeling hopeless or irritable during a specific time every year.

It is believed that symptoms of SAD are related to changes in sunlight that affect the body’s internal clock, brain chemistry, or hormones. The result is symptoms of depression, sleep issues, and mood changes. Besides light therapy, diet and physical activity may provide some relief.

Is there a cure for depression? It sometimes occurs in episodes, and an episode may end. With treatment, symptoms can be managed to the point that people are able perform daily tasks that they previously performed. Moods can improve and activities can be enjoyed once again. Plus, promising new treatments are being explored.

If you notice symptoms of depression in a loved one, share your concern and open a conversation. If resistance arises, you may be able to recruit someone who would have a better chance. Encourage rather than criticize. If symptoms worsen or a crisis arises, get help! In less urgent scenarios, an offer to assist with finding treatment may be the key. If you or a loved one is suffering with the debilitating effects of depression, reach out to your doctor. You’re not alone!

The 401(k) Story

What’s Our Next Chapter?

For my parents’ generation, paying for their retirement involved Social Security benefits, a company pension, or some combination of both. The good news was that it all happened without their input. Every month, a check showed up, just like clockwork. The bad news was that the amount of that monthly check never changed. The average family’s largest financial asset was their home, and the path to wealth accumulation was difficult, at best.

Today, 90 million American workers participate in their employer’s 401(k) plan. The cumulative value of these plans is $14 trillion. The 401(k) dollars that retired workers have rolled over into IRAs brings the total value of America’s self-directed retirement accounts to $34 trillion. This is five times greater than the Federal budget and close to one half of the American stock market.

Whenever the bean counters on Wall Street see these numbers, they begin to salivate and lust after control of those investable dollars. Thus, I was not surprised when I read in The Wall Street Journal that President Trump has signed an executive order directing the Department of Labor to open up these retirement dollars to riskier, previously unavailable investment vehicles such as private equity, real estate, and crypto currency.

When the 401(k) program was first introduced in 1975, the public response was underwhelming. The burden was on employers to initiate the establishment of a 401(k) plan. This required them to hire an accounting manager to administer the necessary paperwork and an investment professional to oversee the investment products. All of this took precious time and money.

Participants were required to build their own investment portfolios from a list of mutual funds prepared by a stockbroker, who was compensated by the funds they recommended. Initially, most of the mutual funds on the 401(k) investment list charged significant fees. These fees provided attractive income for the brokers, but many people realized that they reduced the investment return of the plan’s participants. In 2015, the US Supreme Court jumped into the fray and mandated that employers had to provide “reasonably priced” mutual funds or be fined to make up the difference.

The motivation behind this new executive order is not entirely clear. Perhaps 401(k) participants have been eyeing more adventurous investments with potentially higher returns. Perhaps Wall Street profiteers have done a bit of arm twisting. No matter what the motivation, when it comes to implementation, the devil is always in the details.

Before this executive order goes into effect, there are numerous obstacles to overcome. The first one—and it’s a major one—is how to make the proposed asset classes available in a format that fits the infrastructure of a 401(k) plan. The majority of 401(k) assets are held at discount brokerages. Their owners buy in small dollar amounts, and they need to have a reasonable level of liquidity.

Of the alternative asset classes suggested in the executive order, real estate is the easiest one to access. There currently exist multiple real estate–related mutual funds and exchange traded funds (ETFs).

There are those who own property outright. There are others who invest in real estate–related assets such as mortgage-backed securities and real estate market indexes. The downside to all these forms of real estate–related investments is that their complexity results in substantial management fees that are passed on to the fund’s shareholders.

Due to current SEC regulations, there are no mutual funds that invest directly in crypto currencies. There are funds who market themselves as “crypto funds,” but they invest in derivatives of crypto currencies such as crypto futures. This makes them a derivative of a derivative fund, and not a true crypto fund. As in the case of real estate described above, this complexity translates into a high degree of management oversight expense, all of which is passed on to the shareholders.

There are mutual funds and ETFs that call themselves private equity funds, but due to liquidity and minimum purchase restrictions, they do not invest directly in private equity. Some of these funds track a specific private equity index, in a manner similar to traditional index funds. Others purchase limited amounts of a variety of actual private equity funds. This leaves us with the same situation we faced in the previous two asset classes—high management fees that are passed on to the shareholders.

What about the Supreme Court’s 2015 mandate concerning excessive fees? The executive order carves out an exemption to the fiduciary responsibility of the employer and the brokerage firm, which could potentially lead to a dilution of the Supreme Court’s mandate. This brings 401(k) participants back to square one when it comes to “reasonably priced” funds. The print in this next chapter of the 401(k) story will be fine print, indeed, and the burden is back on 401(k) participants to read it.

Husker Roofing

Longstanding Customer Satisfaction

One of your most valuable assets is your home. Given our midwestern weather conditions, home and business owners often find themselves in need of repairs to their roofing, siding, and gutters. At Husker Roofing, customer service, integrity, and quality products are all part of the company’s mission.

Chuck Hackshaw, owner of Husker Roofing, is a Rotarian and lives by the Four-Way Test of Rotary. The test comprises four questions that Rotarians use to evaluate their thoughts, words, and actions: “Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?” Chuck has these questions posted on his company’s walls, and he uses them to guide his business principles and actions. Customers see a difference in his organization, and Husker Roofing has grown over the past few years because of the firm’s commitment to quality craftsmanship and service.

Chuck apprenticed in the roofing industry after college and spent 12 years working his way into the management of a roofing operation before striking out on his own in 2008. You can count on this locally owned and operated company to be around long after the storms pass!

Most roofing companies, Chuck notes, work with either residential customers or commercial customers but not both. Husker Roofing, however, provides roofing, siding, and gutters to both residential and commercial buildings (including flat roofs and deep slope properties). “By providing both commercial and residential service, we fill a niche that most companies don’t provide,” Chuck says. His crews have worked on thousands of homes and some of the largest Omaha roofing projects in recent years.

Another element that differentiates Husker Roofing from industry competition is the truly free estimate. “Many companies will do a free inspection,” Chuck notes, “but then they charge for an estimate.” What’s the difference, you may wonder? An inspection is an assessment of damage. It’s an important part of the process, but the information it provides is non-specific—it tells you what needs to be repaired but not how much it might cost. An estimate, on the other hand, provides detailed information about the materials, labor, and timeline of the repair.

“An estimate takes time and effort and requires significant knowledge and attention,” Chuck notes. “Some firms come in after a storm just looking for a quick sale and don’t do their due diligence. We are a construction company, so we know what we are doing.” Husker Roofing is licensed and insured in both Nebraska and Iowa, and they offer warranties on materials and installation.

Business is good, and Chuck attributes that success to the firm’s customer focus. “Customer satisfaction is our number one goal,” he asserts. “I get genuine joy and satisfaction from a job well done that leaves the customer happy. We make sure the work is done professionally, meets the manufacturer’s specifications and the customer’s needs, and is pleasing to the eye.”

Roofing customer Mark can’t say enough good things about the experience he had with Husker Roofing. “If you need a roofing company that is honest, reliable, and delivers exactly what they promise, look no further than Husker Roofing,” he says. “Their clear communication, professionalism, and commitment to quality make them the go-to choice for any roofing or exterior project.”

After a severe storm last year, Mark needed a dependable roofer. “I reached out to Husker Roofing, and Rick, sales team member, responded immediately. He provided an estimate, walked me through the entire process, and gave me complete confidence in their work. From that moment, I was sold!”

“Their team did a fantastic job replacing our roof and gutters efficiently and professionally,” Mark continues. “When a minor issue arose—a worker accidentally caused a power outage—Rick quickly resolved it by ensuring an electrician arrived first thing in the morning at no cost to us. The roof and gutters turned out beautifully. We were so impressed that we expanded the project to include new siding on three-quarters of our home, caulking, and a fresh coat of paint. “

Javier is another satisfied Husker Roofing customer, noting that the crew did “an awesome job” on his house. “They were very quick and gave us a great price. I was truly amazed at how well my roof came out. Thanks again!”

Chuck loves hearing about satisfied customers. “At the end of the day, when I see the quality work and the smiles on customers who have put their trust in me, there is no greater reward,” he says.

Husker Roofing is located at 9001 Arbor Street, Suite 106, in Omaha. They provide services in the Omaha and Lincoln areas, including Council Bluffs. To learn more, call 402-5530200 or visit huskerroofing.com.

Pet Care When You Can’t Be There

Boarding, Sitting, and More

If you consider your dog or cat to be a member of your family, you are lucky indeed. You know the many ways it enriches your life! You also know that you cannot be your pet’s constant companion. It’s normal to feel some trepidation when you have to leave your pet in someone else’s care, whether it’s for hours, days, or weeks at a time. Fortunately, there are professionals ready to care for your furry friends—the trick is to find the right pro for your needs. Let’s take a look at some types of short-term and long-term pet care.

Doggy day care is modeled on child care, and it is a welcome convenience for working pet owners. It’s what it sounds like: a facility where you can drop off your dog during the day so they can play with other dogs. Need some extra time to finish a home project? Have your dog spend the day playing with friends, then reunite and nap together.

Expect proof of vaccination requirements before booking (this protects employees and animals alike). Be sure to tour the facility in advance with your dog, keeping an eye out for cleanliness and happy pets.

Pet boarding is when your pet stays at a facility while you are away (on a business trip, on vacation, or even during medical treatment or recovery that leaves you temporarily unable to care for your pet). Boarding facilities generally provide space for your pet to

be alone as well as opportunities to socialize. They keep pets on a regular schedule, which helps pets stay calm.

When you find a facility that suits you, arrange for a tour. Come to the tour prepared with questions. What is the ratio of caregivers to pets? Can caregivers administer medications or accommodate special diets? If your pet becomes ill or injured, what veterinary services are available? Some facilities offer extras like bathing, grooming, tooth brushing…some provide so many grooming extras that they’re not exaggerating when they call themselves pet spas. If they offer special services, how much do they cost?

Find out what the facility provides and what you’ll need to bring along from home. Check the size and condition of the sleeping quarters and find out how often pets are fed, exercised, and taken

outside. Some facilities offer pet cams that will show you how your pet is doing any time of day or night.

Many boarding facilities offer day care, as well. This is convenient if your travel schedule is irregular. Your pet can enjoy the familiarity of the same facility no matter how long you’ll be gone. Pets fare better in places they know! Find out about the specific drop-off and pick-up hours.

Some boarding and day care facilities for dogs also accept cats. There are also facilities that are cats-only, which might be a more relaxing vacation for your cat. In some places, cats from the same family can board together.

Pet sitters come in three types: those who visit your pet at your home, those who stay with your pet in your home, and those who take your pet to stay at their home. Your pet’s needs will determine the best fit.

A pet sitter who just visits your pet may be the most cost-efficient option. Dog visitors can come a few times a day to provide food and water and to take your dog outside for relief, exercise, and play. Cat visitors don’t need to come as often, since cats don’t go outside for relief. The frequency of visits determines the cost. If your pet has special needs, be sure to ask if the sitter can meet them.

A longer-term option is a pet sitter who moves into your home with your pet and maintains the routines you have established for feeding, exercise, and play time. This is a great option for introverted animals who wouldn’t enjoy boarding. It has the added benefit of house-sitting—that is, your home will be lived in while you’re gone. A pet sitter who takes your pet to their home may have other people’s pets with them at the same time. This option is best for pets who play well with others.

A fairly new service for pet owners is emerging: pet concierges. Just like a concierge at a hotel, a pet concierge has worked hard to compile a list of service providers. These providers have likely been interviewed and background-checked on your behalf, saving you a great deal of time.

Another recent development in pet care is liability insurance and bonding. Veterinarians have it; pet sitters are realizing they need it, too. It offers protection for all involved.

The Green Thumb

Stop and Smell the Roses…

Along With the Rest of the Garden

Well, October is beckoning. Hopefully, you had a successful garden season…or at least reasonably successful. We all learn from our mistakes and Lord knows I have made some doozies in my gardening adventures. No matter what gardening failures we have endured, many positive things remain true about gardening…it is ever-changing, and it is always hopeful.

Is there anything more relaxing and rewarding than sitting outside in your garden on a summer’s night, enjoying the fruits of your labor and the natural beauty and awe of nature? Probably not. Firstly, because you created it; secondly, because you brought something into existence that wasn’t there before.

Remembering that we are our own worst critics, I dare say that instead of enjoying that creation, we are always looking for one more plant to tend or one more garden to till. Let’s strive to feel more appreciation for what we accomplish and focus less on what we still have to do.

Over the years, I have learned some interesting things about gardening, and I always learned from my failures first. For instance, after trying different sun exposures, watering techniques and a few prayers, I will never plant delphiniums again. Never! They were always one of my favorites in cottage gardens and old-fashioned gardens…alas, those gardens were always in photographs.

The reality is that I never actually saw delphiniums in any real gardens, and there could be a good reason for that. They do not do well in my garden zone, and they are extremely fussy plants. They are prone to root rot, fungal issues, black leaf spot, slugs, and snails. I experienced most of these disasters, trying again and again, before I finally threw in the towel. I realized that they were not meant to be in my garden.

Another favorite of mine was lupines. I have seen gorgeous fields of them. How difficult could these be to grow? Seeing some gorgeous ones in the garden center, I overspent and planted them in a place of prominence. They were outstanding for about three weeks. Then, some insect destroyed them with a vengeance and they were just gone! Turned out to be an aphid specific to lupines…who knew?

But for every failure I have endured, I have had some really amazing and spectacular successes. With each success comes the knowledge that there is a pretty good chance that I will always be able to count on those particular flowers for success. I have learned not to be too hard on myself for spending time and money on ideas that did not work out. I have learned to enjoy what does well and not stress about what doesn’t.

The beauty of planting living things in the soil and watching

them thrive and grow is truly remarkable. The mental and emotional well-being that gardens give us is undeniable…and is actually scientifically proven. Gardening provides exercise, improves mood, reduces stress, and can even enhance our cognitive function. If you are growing vegetables and herbs, it can contribute to a healthier diet. Let’s not forget the vitamin D you are getting while working outside. According to research, exposure to soil microbes can help strength the immune system. I mean, what is not to love about gardening?

October is the time to plant bulbs for spring here in the Midwest. I love bulbs in a magical way. You plant them in the fall, and they quietly nestle in the earth, like natural batteries that store energy. When conditions are right in the spring and summer, they emerge as the most glorious surprises you could possibly imagine.

The beauty of bulbs is that they store nutrients and energy from one growing season to the next. They are able to survive periods of dormancy, as in winter, or even drought conditions. Bulbs also have the ability to reproduce by creating smaller bulbs around the parent bulb. Mother Nature is the best at planning ahead, it seems.

When my husband and I first moved into our house, the back and front yards were blank slates. Through five years of determination and copious amounts of luck, we have managed to create a garden retreat from all the chaos of the world. It is our own piece of heaven and provides so much calm and serenity for us. Most evenings, you will find us out in our backyard, discussing the events of the day and soaking in the solitude of our own little paradise. If you are considering creating your own garden oasis to cherish, I highly recommend it. You will never regret it!

Japan

This Year’s Hotspot Great Escapes

Does it seem like everyone is going to Japan these days? Actually, they are! The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has reported a record-breaking all-time high of visitors from the United States this year, already surpassing one million back in April. JNTO has been encouraging visitors to explore more of Japan, outside of Tokyo and the cherry blossoms. And autumn is one of the best and most beautiful times to go.

Whether you’ve had Japan on your list for a long time or you want to follow the crowd and see what all of the hype is about, have your travel agent book your trip now so you can enjoy those autumn colors while you eat, walk, bike, karaoke, and hike your way around the country! You do not need a visa if your stay is less than 90 days, which allows plenty of time for you to enjoy exploring this ancient country that is slightly smaller than the size of California.

I sometimes like to watch a video about a destination before I travel there…just to get a taste of what’s coming. If you feel the same, check out “Rhys Darby in Japan” on Prime Video. Rhys Darby is a comedian from New Zealand who travels around Japan to explore quirky things and lesser known areas of the nation. He’s very entertaining! I also enjoy the channel NHK World’s “Cycle Around Japan.” You feel like you are riding along the scenery of Japan, meeting locals, and discovering the culture and traditions. “Journeys in Japan” is also an easy watch.

Once you’re in Japan, consider exploring by e-bike! It is one of the best ways to see the diverse landscapes and immerse yourself in the culture without having to fight the crowds. There are many well maintained paths throughout the country, suitable for all fitness levels. Search: National Cycle Routes and Setouchi Shimanami Kaido for some great scenic routes. Even better is stopping to taste local specialties along the way. After a ride, visit a nearby hot spring bath (onsen) for a nice soak. (Or skip the ride and go right for the soak!)

If you’re planning to visit an onsen (and I recommend that you do), you should consider this note about tattoos, which are historically taboo in Japan: In many onsen establishments, tattoos are not permitted. Others no longer adhere to this rule, especially those that cater to international visitors, but it’s smart to ask in advance to avoid disappointment. If this applies to you, have your travel or booking agent confirm what’s allowed.

The National Parks are gorgeous and plentiful in Japan. Autumn and spring are the ideal times to visit, with comfortable temperatures. Come after typhoon season and you will catch the leaves changing in September in Hokkaido from the north, to the last of them falling in December in the south. This makes for perfect hiking weather in Japan, where the weekends can be crowded in popular areas.

There are so many National Parks to choose from! Narrow it down by location, by hiking ability, or even by the flora and fauna you would like to see. The Japan.travel website has a helpful National Parks page where it breaks down all the details, including the wide range of accommodations for every budget and comfort level.

Autumn in the Japanese countryside is known for its extremely colorful foliage (leaves of amber, gold, yellow, orange, deep red, and even purple). Take a scenic drive through the mountains or valleys, where you are surrounded by the colors of Japanese maples, Japanese beech trees, and fields of grass. The sweet smell of brown sugar is in the air from the Katsura as their heart-shaped leaves fall to the ground.

If you are up for it, tackle the Japanese Alps, or take advantage of the hundreds of other walking and hiking paths found throughout the parks. Check out the ropeways at the ski resorts for an even more relaxing pace. These include aerial lifts, gondolas, and aerial tramways that whisk you up to the top of the mountain. The views amongst the trees are amazing!

While you are in Japan, try some new food! Besides sushi and ramen, consider taiyaki (fish-shaped cake), okonomiyaki (savory pancake), or takoyaki (grilled or fried snack typically filled with octopus). Check out the assortment of food and drink at convenience stores and food courts, visit a pharmacy for great beauty products, grab cheap souvenirs from 100 Yen stores, and have some fun at a game center.

You could stay in Western accommodations, but I highly recommend you experience Japan’s famed hospitality and culture by staying in a ryokan (Japanese inn) or a minshuku (B&B). You’ll love it!

Time to Get It!

It Was Always Up to You

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” —Rumi

Is it our age? Is there a magical spell that comes over us when we reach a certain chapter in our lives? I turned 70 a few months back, and it’s as if the veil that has covered my eyes for decades has been lifted. I find myself stronger—emotionally, mentally, and spiritually—and more determined to honor and change myself.

“Give. But don’t allow yourself to be used. Love. But don’t allow your heart to be abused. Trust. But don’t be naive. Listen. But don’t lose your own voice.” —Unknown

I find myself reflecting on my behavior and asking myself some tough questions. Was I respectful to the person I was with in that interaction? If not, why not? Did I feel they were respectful to me? If not, why not? When I replay the conversation in my mind, could I have come up with a better way to get my point across? Could I have been stronger? Was I too strong? Did I learn anything about the relationship that I have with this person? Perhaps most importantly: Is this relationship worth more of my energy?

“You can only let someone throw so many stones at you before you pick them all up, put them together, and build a

wall to keep them from doing it again!” —Unknown

Improving ourselves…making new, better decisions about the relationships in our lives, has repercussions that many times we cannot predict. When we become more confident, more assertive, more secure within our own skin, we often get pushback. At times, it is severe pushback.

“Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change. —Wayne W. Dyer

Perhaps this process has to do with the years of life experience that I now have behind me. No one can teach you life experience… you have to live it. Let’s face it, at 70 years old, I’ve had a whole lot of time to gather this knowledge.

Making the decision to respect myself and not be a doormat feels a whole lot better than hoping people in my life might change… might be nicer…might finally get it. Guess what? It wasn’t up to them to get it…it was up to me!

“Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you have power over instead of craving control over what you don’t.” —Steve Maraboli

Be Prepared

Winterize Your Home, Inside and Out

Founding Father Benjamin Franklin gave us many words of wisdom. One of my favorite quotes from him is, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing for failure.” Nothing can be truer, especially when it comes to preparing to survive the winter months. By winterizing your house, you not only keep it warm and comfortable during the cold weather; you can also mitigate unwarranted damage and save money on energy bills. Winterizing a home means getting it ready on the inside as well as the outside. Let’s take a look at some items to check!

Your roof is your first line of defense against winter weather. Make sure it’s ready for the challenges of the season. Have your roof inspected for damaged shingles or leaks, and arrange to have them repaired before the cold winds begin to blow.

Prevent ice dams by having your gutters cleaned and installing gutter guards. Gutter guards block out most debris, ensuring your gutter remains clear and allows water to be properly diverted. Less debris also means less gutter cleaning and longer gutter lifespan.

Keep driveways and sidewalks clear of ice and snow and repair any issues with steps and handrails. You can also be prepared for winter weather safety by keeping de-icing salt handy for sprinkling on steps, sidewalks, and your driveway.

Keep the trees trimmed and remove dead branches and debris from your yard. Ice, snow, and wind can weaken trees and cause branches to fall and potentially damage your home, car, or even yourself and others. Autumn is the best time to prune trees for lower risk of damage. An arborist can advise you on which trees need to be trimmed and which trees need to be removed entirely before they blow over.

The next one I sometimes forget, and my neighbor always reminds me: House the hose. Remove all garden hoses that are attached to the house, drain them, and store them indoors or in the garage. Shut off the valves and insulate the faucet. If you have a pool, winterize it and check its cover. If the temperatures dip below freezing, run the pump to keep the pipes from freezing.

Drafts are a significant source of heat loss during the winter. They allow cold air to seep into your home and warm air to escape. Inspect doors and windows for gaps. If necessary, have caulk or weather stripping installed. Add door sweeps to the bottoms of exterior doors to prevent drafts. If it’s cold enough, even a screen door won’t keep the cold from seeping in!

Proper insulation can make a world of difference in maintaining a warm and comfortable home during the winter. Insulate crawl spaces and basements. Make sure the attic floor is properly insulated. The attic itself should be well-ventilated and about 10 degrees warmer than the temperature outside.

If you are like me, you have an annual contract to check heating and air conditioning systems. If you don’t, it’s a good idea to call and take advantage of their seasonal specials. A well-maintained heating system is essential for a warm home in winter. Don’t wait until the first cold snap to discover your heating system isn’t working correctly. Schedule an annual maintenance check-up for your furnace or boiler to ensure it’s working efficiently. As your HVAC tech will remind you, change your air filter regularly (every 3 months). Consider installing a programmable thermostat to optimize your heating schedule.

Frozen pipes can lead to costly water damage. To avoid this, have your exposed pipes wrapped with foam pipe insulation—especially pipes that are in unheated areas of your home, like the basement. Allow a small trickle of water to run through your faucets during extremely cold weather to prevent freezing.

In case of a winter storm or power outage, it’s crucial to be prepared. Create an emergency kit that includes non-perishable food and water for at least 72 hours, flashlights and extra batteries, blankets and warm clothing, and a portable phone charger.

During the winter, we often use heating appliances more frequently, which increases the risk of fire and carbon monoxide exposure. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are functioning correctly and replace batteries as needed. While you’re addressing potential fire hazards, don’t forget to have your fireplace and chimney cleaned and inspected. The dryer vent also needs to be cleaned (duct cleaners can take care of this task).

Winterizing your home can save you money, increase your safety, and keep you warm. Be prepared and ready for the weather this winter!

Help Kids Adapt to Change

Give Them the Confidence to be Themselves

October is a month of change. Look around you! The leaves and the weather are the most obvious. The school year has already started in many areas. Whether they’ve started kindergarten, middle school, high school, or college, the kids have been dealing with change. Everything is new: school, teacher, friends, rules, clothing styles. That kind of change is something I’m very familiar with!

I went to 12 different schools in 12 years (we didn’t have kindergarten that long ago). We lived in five cities in four states…and some of those we lived in multiple times, which meant different places or parts of the same city. I don’t remember how Mom dealt with it, but none of the changes felt traumatic. It’s just what we did. I think it helped that, when possible, our moves were made during the summer, when neighbor kids would be about.

I’ve been told that growing up with that kind of mobility (instability?) isn’t mentally healthy for kids…too much change…no roots. That may be true for kids who haven’t learned to adapt to change and are frightened by it.

When our kids were toddlers, we built a house instead of renting. My in-laws, amazed at how well the kids took the move, asked how we managed it. My reply: They were included. We took them out to see the new house often during construction. We found their new

school and daycare. When the house was nearing completion, we let them pick which room they wanted. We familiarized them with the new neighborhood. We also noted other new construction in the same area, knowing there would soon be neighbors for friends.

If your kids are having any of these new experiences, pay attention to how they act and react. It’s not too late to orient them to their new surroundings…adapting to change is a learning situation. Ask them about any fears or uncertainties in their new situation. Talk with them about ways to allay these fears. Not knowing what to expect or how to cope is frightening.

Most kids aren’t comfortable being “different.” Help your kids establish the confidence to be themselves. If their friends are athletic and they’re not, help them find another way to shine.

A friend wrote a song responding to the community devastation felt after a child committed suicide. Her lyrics encourage ways to find support. To paraphrase: “Memorize the rules but realize in a world of Technicolor…others focus on black and white…color outside the lines. Sing your own song. Splash in the rain. Never miss your chance and, even when there’s no music…dance to your own song! Like the moon and the Milky Way, know that you belong.”

A Shift in Automobiles

Smart Meets Sleek in 2026!

As the fall leaves brighten our daily drive, 2026 vehicles are hitting the lot for new car sales. The auto industry is in full bloom, sprouting greener, sleeker, and—yes, safer choices for buyers. Despite rising prices and inflation, many dealerships project sales volume in the $15 million range, and they’re ready to make some great deals. Buckle up, and let’s see what’s shifting for the new car buying season.

One key strategy for manufacturers who are chasing better fuel economy and increasing EV range is to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle. But does driving a lighter car make you less safe during a crash?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (iihs.org) researchers recently released a study on the topic. They found that “heavier vehicles proved more likely to kill occupants of other cars but not more likely to protect their own occupants.” This is due primarily to a design change in SUVs and trucks that means their front ends “align better with cars’ energy-absorbing structures.” Essentially, they made heavier cars less dangerous to crash into. Keep in mind that a lighter vehicle is also likely to be easier to maneuver, which means you’ll have better chances of avoiding a crash in the first place. Sounds like a win!

Take Honda’s upcoming “0” series, for example, which leans heavily into aerodynamics and lightweight design, crafting sleeker profiles rather than the bulky EV shapes of recent years. Most carry collision protection and robust safety features. There’s a lower environmental footprint, too, and EV drivers can go farther on a charge.

Car and Driver touts the BMW iX3 model, which is built on an innovative platform promising “serious juice.” That means 4 00-mile horsepower, range estimate of 400 miles per charge, and rapid charging (200 miles in ten minutes), as well as a luxurious, longer-wheelbase cabin.

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee goes hybrid-only, promising 37 mpg and over 500 miles of range while packing adaptive cruise, emergency breaking, and a rugged, boxy style for state-of-the-art durability. Subaru Solterra’s aerodynamics improve crash risk, elevating safety along with comfort.

It’s true that technology and safety are different, but they’re directly linked. Tech enables new and improved safety features like automatic emergency braking (using sensors to avoid a collision), blind spot monitoring, and rearview cameras, along with cross-traffic alert (required since 2018). But not all technology improves safety. Navigation features and media controls can be a distraction if they require too much attention to operate.

Gone are the days when you needed eyes in the back of your head to wedge into or out of tight spaces. With cameras, sensors, and GPS to keep you centered in your lane, driver-assist technology is cutting-edge today. New cars often feature forward collision warnings and pedestrian detection along with lane-keeping assistance. Innovations such

as biometric car keys, AI voice assistants, and even mandatory impairment detection (kill switches) for drunk driving technology are power tools in 2026.

Fuel efficiency often means hybrid integration for the best mileage, smart transmissions, intelligent battery management, and sleek design. Gas-powered vehicles like the Mitsubishi Mirage (leading the pack in 2025 for fuel efficiency) are expected to get 39 mpg, and the Honda Civic boasts around 35 mpg.

For 2026, bold design meets practical for a full-on refresh, and you’ll still get the advanced technology along with stronger structures for safety. Although not all 2026 models are widely released yet, watch for the sleek Honda Prelude, the aggressive Ford Mustang Raptor, and high-end luxury designs like the Rolls Royce or the Genesis, with iconic and timeless design. Versatile and affordable brands like the Equinox EV and Silverado EV are popular, too. Don’t forget the new Bel Air, an aftermarket concept from Chevrolet that combines muscle and tech with a bit of nostalgia.

Even as supply chain delivery becomes smoother, some brands are leaning into reshoring. That means sending manufacturing and production operations back to the company’s original country. (The strategy reverses offshoring, where production was moved abroad for lower costs.) Campanies may gain benefits like improved quality control and faster responses to market demand, as well as better supply chain reliability. Today, there’s a surge in digital supply-chain tools like blockchain tracking to AI forecasting. That means reliability and faster replenishment for the buyer.

What’s in the fast lane for most popular brands? SUVs and crossovers dominate. Toyota is a perennial favorite, while Honda, Mazda, Kia, Hyundai, BMW, Subaru, and Jeep Cherokees are also in the running. Watch for the rise of EVs, but remember that 2026 has something for every kind of driver!

Pedodontics PC

Building Healthy Smiles

Early dental care plays an essential role in establishing good oral hygiene habits, preventing cavities, and ensuring the proper development of teeth and jaws. Orthodontic care is equally important, which is why the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children be screened by an orthodontist at age seven to detect issues that could affect the future growth and health of permanent teeth. At Pedodontics PC, families find comprehensive care that combines pediatric dentistry and orthodontics under one roof for children and young adults.

Katherine Higgins, DMD, MS, joined Pedodontics PC, as the new orthodontist, in January of this year. She appreciates being part of a practice that is owned and operated entirely by women. Her own childhood orthodontic experience inspired Dr. Katherine to pursue a career in orthodontics. “I had braces at age 10, and that was a transformative experience for me.” The more she learned, the more she knew she had found her passion.

Dr. Katherine earned her Bachelor of Science at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and her Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from the University of New England College of Dental Medicine in Port-

land, Maine. She completed her postgraduate orthodontics training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Lincoln, receiving a Certificate of Orthodontics and a Master of Science in Oral Biology, with a thesis on orthodontics in craniofacial patients.

Dr. Katherine is a member of the Cleft Palate/Craniofacial Team at Boys Town National Research Hospital. Boys

Helping Children in Need Sleep Better.

All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. Across the US, too many boys and girls go without a bed—or even a pillow—to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. This can affect their happiness and health. That’s where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in. We’re a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering handbuilt bunk beds to children and families in need.

Dr. Katherine L. Higgins, DMD, MS

Town is one of two craniofacial clinics in Eastern Nebraska. “I enjoy being part of the team,” she says. The treatment of patients with cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies requires expertise, coordination, and a personalized care approach. Dr. Katherine brings this expertise to the team at Pedodontics PC. “We understand how to approach these cases and develop a treatment plan that leads to successful outcomes,” she emphasizes.

When children see an orthodontist early, problems can be identified and treated early, when the bone is most malleable. “An orthodontist looks at the jaw bones, soft tissue, and facial profile. If there is an issue, we develop a plan to achieve the best dental, skeletal, and aesthetic results.”

Besides straightening misaligned teeth and making them look better, orthodontic care can also improve a patient’s bite for proper chewing and biting. Left untreated, an improper bite can lead to problems like jaw joint issues, early wear, and chipping, which can make it difficult to eat and speak properly.

Orthodontic treatment options include traditional metal braces, clear aligners, and clear braces, all of whic are offered at Pedodontics PC. Clear aligners have seen significant technological advances in the last five years, Dr. Katherine reports. They are popular because they are nearly invisible and can be removed when needed. Ultimately, the most effective treatment option depends upon the severity and complexity of each patient’s orthodontic needs.

Some of Dr. Katherine’s most complex and transformative cases involve jaw surgery, known as orthognathic surgery. “When necessary, this surgery completely changes a patient’s facial profile. It also improves jaw alignment, which improves chewing, relieves jaw pain,

and enhances speech,” she says.

Developing relationships with each child and their family is important to Dr. Katherine. She takes the time to listen and strives to create a comfortable and positive environment for every patient. “I explain what I do at every visit, so children understand the process and why it is important,” she said. According to Dr. Katherine, educating patients eases fears and contributes to better outcomes. “I enjoy getting to know them, watching them grow, and celebrating their successes as they mature,” she said. “Orthodontics plays a role in transforming our patients’ smiles, and it is rewarding to get to know them.”

Although she is not originally from Nebraska, Dr. Katherine loves Omaha. She met her husband while in dental school, and he is currently an oral surgery resident at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. “We are very active in our church and the community, and we love being here, which is why we chose to stay.” As a former college athlete, Dr. Katherine is also active in the local Omaha lacrosse scene as a coach.

Dr. Katherine explains that she often sees patients for several years throughout their course of treatment. “Developing a care plan is like working on a puzzle. Each step is important to achieve the best results.” For her, the most rewarding part is watching a patient’s confidence grow as their smile improves. “You can see their smile light up and their confidence shine through, and I love that.”

Pedodontics PC, is located at 2521 South 119th Street, in Omaha. The office is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Tuesday and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can call them at 402-330-5913 or find them online at pedodonticspc.com.

Diamond Knowledge

Just the Basics

Diamonds are known as symbols of love, commitment, and timeless beauty. But with so many options available, understanding the differences is essential to making the right choice when buying a new diamond or redesigning an heirloom piece.

The four main groups of diamonds include natural, lab-grown, treated, and natural fancy color diamonds. Natural diamonds are those transparent, colorless gems formed deep within the earth millions of years ago. Lab-grown diamonds use technology that simulates natural diamond formation.

Treated diamonds are natural diamonds that undergo processes like color enhancement or fracture filling to improve their appearance and value. Extremely rare natural fancy color diamonds have a gentle hue because of some impurities in the original carbon material.

The value of a diamond is determined by key factors known as the 4Cs, which are cut, color, clarity, and carat. These characteristics work together to shape how a diamond looks and how it is valued. Each characteristic is graded on a consistent, objective scale so buyers have a way to compare diamonds.

A diamond’s cut refers to how well it reflects light, as well as its proportions and overall finish. Cut is not the same thing as shape, like round or emerald. It is the quality of the craftsmanship that determines the diamond’s brilliance.

Color plays a significant role in a diamond’s value. Perfectly colorless diamonds are considered the highest quality and have the highest value. Although yellow or brown diamonds can lower a diamond’s grade, some buyers prefer the warm look of a faintly yellow diamond.

Clarity refers to a diamond’s transparency. Clarity is impacted by blemishes and inclusions, which can reduce a diamond’s brilliance. Blemishes are found on the outside of a diamond and include nicks, scratches, chips, or abrasions. Inclusions are found inside the stone and include clouds, crystals, graining, or feathers. Although these flaws influence a diamond’s grade, many are too small to be seen by the naked eye and often do not take away from the diamond’s beauty.

Carat refers to a diamond’s weight, not its size. Keep in mind that although two diamonds may weigh the same, they may have different values depending on their cut, color, and clarity. All four Cs work together to determine a diamond’s overall value.

Man-made diamonds look like and sparkle like real diamonds, making them an appealing option for some buyers. These types of diamonds fall into two categories: synthetic diamonds (also called lab-grown or lab-created) and imitation diamonds (also called simulants).

What is the difference between the two types of man-made diamonds? Synthetic diamonds are created in a laboratory. Because they are made of carbon atoms, like natural diamonds, they share some of the same optical and physical properties. It often requires specialized equipment and trained professionals to tell them apart from natural diamonds.

Simulants, on the other hand, only mimic the look of real diamonds. The most common examples are cubic zirconia and synthetic moissanite. Although simulants may be natural or created in a lab, they do not share the chemical composition or physical properties of natural or synthetic diamonds. As a result, gemologists can typically distinguish them more easily.

Whether your diamond is natural, synthetic, or simulated, it represents not only a financial investment but often a sentimental one, as well. To protect that investment, consider jewelry insurance.

Standard homeowners insurance may provide limited coverage for jewelry under certain conditions listed in your policy (like fire, for example), but it typically has low limits for theft. To ensure your pieces are fully protected, you can “schedule” individual pieces on your homeowners policy for their appraised value, or you can purchase a standalone jewelry insurance policy. Specialized jewelry insurance policies typically offer more comprehensive protection, covering damage, theft, accidental loss, and even “mysterious disappearance.” Supplemental jewelry insurance can provide peace of mind.

Protection is not just about insurance; it’s also about preservation. For example, you may have cherished heirloom pieces that are simply not your style. You can redesign these pieces into something you will love to wear.

If you have an heirloom diamond you want to redesign, there are several things to consider. Repairing and polishing the center stone can restore its brilliance. A new setting, different metal, side stones, or adjusting the stone’s height can dramatically transform the look. Sometimes, a new wedding band may be all that is needed to refresh the look of an old-fashioned engagement ring. Redesigning an heirloom piece allows you to honor its history while creating a piece of jewelry that is uniquely yours.

A diamond should reflect your style and personality. The best jewelry is well-worn, enjoyed, and even passed down for generations to come.

Newest Trends in Fireplaces

Function and Style

Remember the fireplaces of the 1980s? Heavy fireboxes, hand-placed stone or rock around a huge, grated fireplace... soot, ash, and dusty, wrought iron tools. If this describes your present-day fireplace, you may be thinking about a re-do. Fireplaces may not be used as the primary heat source for a house or cabin, but homeowners still love having them.

Fireplace designs have come a long way in the last few decades. They now are sleek, modern, efficient, and—best of all—affordable! If you are thinking of updating or replacing your fireplace, there are several options to consider. As with any project, be sure you are working with licensed and professional contractors, whether you are ripping everything out and starting over or just want to spruce up a bit.

Your fireplace consultant may use terms that are not familiar to you. Let’s define these:

What is tuck pointing? This is a technique that focuses on repairing the existing mortar joints. If you see cracking or crumbling mortar in between the bricks or see water damage, you need to consult a professional for repair.

What is a fireplace insert? This is a self-contained heating unit that fits into an existing masonry fireplace opening. These inserts create a sealed combustion system that prevents heat loss and keeps more warm air in the room. In many cases, an insert can be…inserted into an existing fireplace space without having to tear out the surrounding masonry.

What is refacing? Just like cabinet refacing, fireplace refacing means updating and sprucing up an existing fireplace without demolishing the fireplace itself. New stone or tile? New colors? A sleeker mantel? The choice is yours, and the cost is much lower without demolition.

The cost of a fireplace makeover depends on how much work needs to be done. How much de-construction and construction are you going to need? Do you need the firebox and chimney inspected, patched, and cleaned? (Remember, even gas fireplaces could use a good cleaning or a visit from the chimney sweep.) Do you need to install a gas line or electricity hook-ups? Do you need to rip, repair, or reframe? Do you need to patch, paint, or install drywall?

The scope of your project will also determine which professionals you’ll need to hire. Will you need a mason, an electrician, a framer, a drywaller, a painter? A fireplace or building contractor can work through any questions you may have and can likely recommend subcontractors. Some will manage the entire project for you!

Now, it’s time for the fun part—imagining the design!

Take pictures of favorite fireplaces or print pictures from websites. A fireplace specialist can help you figure out what materials will fit into your budget.

Remember, interior design is very personal—create what you like. However, you might be inspired by the fireplace trends that designers are seeing in 2025. Sleek and horizontal fireplaces have been trending recently; homeowners no longer prefer the oversized, heavy stone motif. Linear gas fireplaces can add ambience to rooms of all sizes. Finishes include a variety of colors, materials, and textures. Whether your style is natural, minimalist, bold, or industrial, there’s a fireplace style that will work for you.

Electric fireplaces (complete with remotes) provide realistic flames and customizable heat settings. This relatively new innovation can expand design choices in any room. Many models have LED lighting features, smart controls, and heat settings. You will see frameless or ventless wall units with colored glass and variable heat settings. Scandinavian-style standalone units may interest you. Double-sided fireplaces can allow for a connection between two rooms… or even between indoors and outdoors!

Fireplace surrounds are made out of a variety of materials, including plaster, stacked stone, quartz tiles, mosaics, reclaimed wood—the material is only limited by your imagination. Do you want to increase functionality by adding bookcases or shelves? If you are mounting a television above the fireplace, the heat output and TV height need to be considered. Your fireplace specialist will know the details.

The mantel is the punctuation mark that highlights the final statement of the fireplace. Mantels are often made from stone, clear brick, or a thick or thin piece of wood.

For the finishing touches, study some professionally decorated mantels. Your decorations can be seasonal, fresh or silk flower arrangements, family photographs, one-of-a-kind pieces of art or sculpture— anything that ties together the décor of the room. Fairy lights or illuminated candles can highlight the space.

If you want your family to spend this holiday season gathered around your new or updated fireplace, you need to begin now! Visit a local fireplace showroom or call a specialist to get started.

Enterprising Ideas

Interiors Joan and Associates

Personalized, Functional Design

When it comes to beautiful home interiors, good design makes all the difference. In Omaha and Lincoln, clients can step into a showroom for a peek at brand-name products and custom-made art, accessories, furniture, floor and wall coverings, lighting, and custom window treatments. There are styles to complement home or office at price points to fit a wide variety of budgets.

Owner Kris Patton and her team of designers work with new and existing clients to create beautiful and functional spaces. “We’re full service, so we can do anything from a remodel to building a new home from the ground,” says Kris. “Or a client might just need a few accent pieces to freshen up their home. It’s really about listening, finding out what the angle is for their project, and then filling that need.”

For example, a client may start with new construction. Five years down the road, a living room may need sprucing up with art, accessories, or custom window treatments and wallpaper. “We do custom ordering, so if it’s not on the floor, we can get it,” Kris notes. “We buy from over 30 different companies, so we can find what’s needed based on price and look. We can get the exact custom style you want.”

The showroom floor gives the client a comfort zone…the confidence that comes with purchasing after sampling in person. If there’s something you need for home or business, Kris knows how to source it. She’s well connected with suppliers and manufacturers from around the world, and that’s a big advantage for her clients.

“We have a hand in a lot of different resources,” says Kris. “We go to market twice a year to see and touch all our products, so we understand the ins and outs of these companies. We hand select all of our accessories.”

Interiors Joan and Associates has been around for more than 60 years, and they have spent those years building an incredible knowledge base. Kris believes that their longevity speaks to the high quality of the creative designs they bring to their clients. “Anyone can copy what someone else has done, but to come up with a really inspiring idea that fits the client—that’s a learned skill set. It happens collaboratively with all the designers working here.”

Kris’s advice for planning a project is to plan ahead and allow enough time to work through the details. Trusting your designer gives you the confidence to step out of your comfort zone. In other words, Kris loves to inspire people to do something they haven’t seen a hundred times before. “I listen to what my client wants, but I also try to push their limits a bit so they can walk away and say, ‘Oh, this is stunning, and I didn’t think about that.’ I like to show you something unexpected so that it’s truly yours.”

Kris notes that more people are choosing color over stark white or neutrals, explaining the trending concept of color drenching. Imagine a great room with beautiful trim detail and a fabulous fireplace. Now, imagine that the walls, ceiling, and trim are all one color—perhaps a deep, saturated color like green or a deep rust burgundy. When someone walks into the room, they’re totally immersed. It’s a “wow” effect.

“People are embracing color, and they’re more accepting of a totally saturated room, making it really cozy,” Kris says. “It’s fun to give it more pop and more personal style. In the right room, it creates a great feeling when you walk into that space.”

Lighting is another trending detail that adds a lot of personality to a room. Wood accents such as wood beams are trending, too, and wallpaper has made a comeback. “Lighting adds a lot. Dropping a chandelier and adding accent lighting can really change a space,” Kris says. “Wallpaper is big. When you add artwork or pieces to a wall that is already wallpapered, it allows that piece to be even more spectacular.”

As part of a one-stop shop, Interiors Joan and Associates also has workrooms for custom window treatments. “When people interject window treatments to their space, it adds a whole new layer of a finished look.”

The team at Interiors Joan and Associates works closely with builders and contractors to make sure your new build or remodel is everything you dreamed. “Let us help you get everything and finish your space,” Kris concludes. “We can coordinate the whole project. We can step into your space and say, ‘Okay, let’s do this!’”

Did Someone Ask for Help?

First, Just Be There

“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” —A. A. Milne

Life challenges…everyone has them. I know that I certainly do. My husband, Manny, agrees that he does, as well. Our blessing is that we have one another. We listen and work together to find solutions that work for both of us. We have learned much through our challenging life lessons.

When we see our family or friends struggling, it can be difficult to know how to help…or even if we should step in. Every challenge comes with a long history that we can’t fully see. Their struggle may stretch back years, may be shaped by countless efforts, setbacks, and emotions we can’t begin to understand. We may not understand their frustration, anger, or fear. What we can do, though, is simply be there for them.

“Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.” —Jane Howard

Many times, if not all of the time, what people really need is to just have someone to vent to.

“Listening is an art that requires attention over talent, spirit over ego, other over self.” —Dean Jackson

This is the challenge…keeping our fixes for their challenges to ourselves. Being in their life at these stressful times, but being someone who honors them enough to calmly listen, nod, and just be there…is one of the most supportive things we can provide for those we love.

Now, as the conversation evolves, they may calm down and might ask for help or suggestions. But then again, they may not. Jumping in and being the savior might help our ego, but it’s not a good plan if they are not asking.

“Never give advice unless asked. The wise won’t need it, the fool won’t heed it.” —German Proverb

How many times have you offered unsolicited advice that has fallen on deaf ears? Maybe you know, deep down, that what you’re suggesting is the best path for your friend or family to go down. Then the reality hits you that they are not really listening to you. In fact, they are probably getting irritated or angry with you for “butting in.”

“To offer a man unsolicited advice is to presume that he doesn’t know what to do or that he can’t do it on his own.” —John Gray

They, too, are braver and stronger and smarter than you think.
