INFORMATION AND COURSE GUIDE

INFORMATION AND COURSE GUIDE
VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VDSS) is a program offered to you as a student in senior secondary school to complete or partially complete a Vocational Education and Training course while still completing your year 10, 11 or 12 school certificate.
Undertaking VET studies in your secondary school years provides you with valuable learning and experience that can lead to employment and further study after secondary school. Students who have successfully completed or partially completed a VET course while still at secondary school may also be eligible for credit towards another course at TAFE.
VDSS is ideal if you want to gain practical skills for a certain industry or career (vocation).
You may choose a VDSS course for a number of reasons. It might be the course content that interests you or you may want to pursue a career in a particular field. A VDSS course helps you to gain skills and knowledge in areas of study that may lead you to employment and/or further study.
Wodonga TAFE works in partnership with our regional secondary schools to provide a unique opportunity for you as a student to experience a career industry you may be considering, while you are still at school.
A VDSS PROGRAM MAY:
• Improve your employment and career opportunities to be ‘job ready’ in your industry
• Provide you with a nationally accredited qualification or statement of attainment
• Create a pathway for you to employment or further study
• Provide you with credit into an apprenticeship which may reduce the amount of trade training required and in some instances, reduce the duration of your chosen apprenticeship.
HOW DO YOU DECIDE IF YOU SHOULD DO A VDSS PROGRAM?
• Speak with your Careers Advisor or VET Coordinator at school
• Talk to people who work in the industry
• Talk to family or friends about your interest and options
• Decide if the course is an area of study that interests you
• Attend a Wodonga TAFE Experience Day or taster program
• Visit Wodonga TAFE’s Skills and Jobs HQ for free career advice and career counseling.
VDSS courses are offered to secondary school students and are run over a two-year period, which you can complete during years 10, 11 or 12.
After successfully completing your course, you will gain a nationally recognised qualification or statement of attainment, containing the units you have studied and completed.
VDSS programs offer you ways to undertake VET; as part of your VCE, or as part of the VCE Vocational Major.
VCE VET programs are put together by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and need to be approved courses of study for you to undertake as part of your Year 10, 11 and 12 studies.
Some of the VCE VET programs provide scored assessment, which contributes towards your ATAR. For more information talk to your school’s VDSS Coordinator or your Careers Advisor. Please note Wodonga TAFE do not provide scored assesments for Auspice or onsite programs.
Your VDSS course is delivered over a two-year period and is broken up into units 1-2 and units 3-4 delivery.
Wodonga TAFE invoices your secondary school directly for delivery of your course. Any fees for courses that you may need to pay will be advised by your secondary school.
For VET courses or qualifications that are not approved VCAA VCE VET programs, you may be eligible for credit towards your VCE through Block Credit Recognition.
Credit is awarded in the VCE on the basis of achieving units of competency. Credit is determined by the AQF level and the nominal hours of competency. Talk to your Careers Advisor or VET Coordinator for more information about block credit.
By undertaking structured workplace learning related to your VET program, you may gain additional credit towards your VCE by completing the workplace learning record.
SWL provides you with the opportunity to integrate on the job experience with secondary study. SWL assists with skill development, allows you to apply industry knowledge learnt as part of your VET course, and enhance your employment opportunities.
At the end of your second year of study or on advice of withdrawal from your VDSS course, Wodonga TAFE will review your completed units of study and issue either a Statement of Attainment or a Certificate through the My eQuals portal. A copy of your Certificate/Statement of Attainment will also be issued to your secondary school.
The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) is an independent statutory body responsible to the Victorian Minister for Education. VCAA serve both government and non-government schools.
The role of VCAA is to provide high quality curriculum, assessment and reporting to enable learning for life. This includes VDSS opportunities. Further information on VCAA can be found online at https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au
VDSS enables you to get real hands-on experience within your chosen industry. To make sure you get the most out of it:
• be organised, motivated and have good time management skills
• understand that the training is different to what you are used to. It is competency based and you will receive a full qualification or statement of attainment on completion
• be willing to undertake work placement (during holiday time if required)
• enjoy your studies!
• make new friends. Develop relationships with other likeminded students
• get connected with the workplace, gain some work experience and who knows, this might lead to employment opportunities
• be open to trying new things.
If you are undertaking a VDSS pre-apprenticeship or trade qualification, you may gain some credit should you continue your studies in the same field of study.
Your VDSS course may be the headstart you require to enter a number of different courses in your chosen field after you finish year 10, 11 or 12.
Classes run subject to student numbers. Wodonga TAFE will notify schools as soon as possible if courses are not running.
VET qualifications may contribute towards your VCE, VCE Vocational Major or Victorian Pathways Certificate.
To find out more information on how VET contributes to VCE, VCE Vocational Major, your ATAR and Block Credits visit the VCAA website at vcaa.vic.edu.au
